Cinders and Glass (Book Edition)
This post has a lot of folktale versions, some very dark, and book recs for retellings collected from around the wide green internet. Next time: #Cinderella in Cinema 1898-2024! #fairytale #folktale #folklore #fairytaleretelling
Fairytale and Folklore Catch up on the whole series of these here. There are A LOT of retellings and reimaginings of that, but the tale of Cinderella – essentially a wish-fulfillment rags-to-riches story that gives poor, downtrodden people the hope that they might be raised above their station and find a measure of affluence and good fortune and love – is such a universal one that there are…

one thing ive never understood is why pantomimes aren't big in america. it combines their love of being loud in theatres with crowd participation and yelling at actors
#um.txt#they probably wouldn't do the sex jokes or the drag though and then it wouldn't really be a panto would it#sorry just thinking about talking to actors reminded me of the horrors of audience participation#i had to play buttons once it was sort of a form of psychological torture. i dressed up as a clown and was like huh#feels cool to be trying to look like a man. let's not examine that for a few years.

Somewhere out there, there's a universe in which Alison and Debbie's paths crossed.
And in that universe, when Alison phones Debbie on Christmas to tell her she's selling the house after all, Debbie marches up to Button House with Elf and Nick in tow and knocks some sense into her.
Because she knows it's hard, being a mum and having this other life. But it's also worth the struggle because family always is, and they're both so very lucky to have more than one. Their lives might not be easy or normal but they're full of magic, and isn't that incredible?
And Alison thinks back to the time she called her powers a gift; she thinks of the panto and the line dance; the carol, the smiles and the laughter. She thinks of Mia growing up with the kind of family she's always dreamed off when she was young.
And in the end, she sells the land but keeps her home, ghostly family and all, and it's the best decision she's ever made.
#will I turn this into a fic? Probably not#but I was having Ghosts finale feels again and I love this idea of fixing it#alison cooper#debbie maddox#bbc ghosts#yonderland#mp bbc ghosts#mp yonderland

i think there’s something to be said about the fact that the captain played the role of the fairy godmother in the panto considering the circumstances of his death. the captain wasn’t invited to button house so him playing the fairy godmother, who lets cinderella go to the ball, adds way more depth. it’s kinda sad. poor captain :(

expanding on my dsmp pantomime idea... “well what about exile?” i hear you cry!! not to worry, it can be just as harrowing :)
in the typical panto, when the villain appears on stage, the audience shouts some variation of “HE’S BEHIND YOU!!” and the character gets to do a silly little “huh?? :) who is? where?? :) lol idk what youre on about!!” until the villain is then revealed
WELL, what if exile was portrayed in this manner, cdream coming to logsted, approaching ctommy from behind while he’s monologuing to the audience,,, they do the “hes behind you!!!” as is typical, and ctommy just... stops hearing them. he cant hear the audience anymore
as he laments on stage about how alone he is, the audience cries out to him, that he isnt alone, that they are there to look out for him, but he cant hear them
i think something similar would work for c!wilbur’s mental state in pogtopia as well, as one of the few characters aware of the audience, they cry out to him, “NOOO” when he goes to the button room (several times) but on the last time he’s there, when he says “they all want you to” , clearly addressing the audience, he can no longer “hear” their response, so he takes the “silence” as agreement
disconnect from the audience in a pantomime i think could be a really interesting subversion of the genre and kind of play into the horror elements present in the original dsmp, especially seeing as pantos are meant to be comedies
imagine you go to see a comedy, a pantomime, where you as the audience as expected to be listened to, and partake in the show as a spectator, and the characters just.... stop listening. i think that would be pretty scary

I read something interesting today: the script of Cinderella; or the Lover, the Lackey, and the Little Glass Slipper – a "fairy burlesque extravaganza" by Henry J. Byron, 1860.
Since I'm hoping to turn my overview of the different screen and stage adaptations of Cinderella into a book, I want to research the British stage tradition of the Cinderella Christmas pantomime. Being American, I'm not very familiar with pantos at all, but I think I should discuss them in my book. While Byron's play wasn't billed as a pantomime, they say it basically codified the standard outline of the Cinderella panto that's used to this day. Namely by giving the "Ugly Sisters" bigger comic roles than they had ever had in earlier British stage adaptations, and by introducing a character who from then on became a stock figure: "Buttons" (or rather "Buttoni"; later versions would Anglicize his name), a friendly manservant in Cinderella's house who loves her unrequitedly, but ultimately helps her reunite with the Prince.
It's an interesting script. Here are the notable details:
*This play is written entirely in rhyming verse, and it's a musical, filled with popular songs of the day and a few excerpts from opera, with new lyrics to fit the story. It even includes the comic duet "Un segreto d'importanza" from Rossini's La Cenerentola. Speaking of which...
*The influence of Rossini's opera La Cenerentola is very strong. The setting is Italy and Cinderella's suitor is the Prince of Salerno, although his name is Prince Poppetti rather than Ramiro. As in the opera, his father is dead, and he stands to lose his inheritance unless he marries as soon as possible. The opera characters of Dandini (who also became a stock figure in Cinderella pantos from then on) and Alidoro are present too. Dandini plays his familiar role of switching clothes with the Prince and temporarily enjoying the good life while his master plays the valet. Alidoro isn't the "fairy godfather" figure of the opera, however, but just has a minor comic role as a stodgy tutor. Also as in the opera, Cinderella's stepsisters (or rather, in this version, her half-sisters) are named Clorinda and Thisbe, and in place of the traditional Stepmother is their buffoonish father, an impoverished baron, here named Baron Balderdash. Unlike Rossini's Don Magnifico, however, Balderdash seems to be Cinderella's biological father: he just favors his daughters by the first of his two deceased wives over his daughter by the second one. When Cinderella begs him to take her to the ball, he's moved to fatherly pity and almost gives in, only to be intimidated into refusing by his overbearing eldest daughter Clorinda. Also as in the opera, Cinderella and the Prince first meet at Cinderella's house while she's still in her rags and share a romantic scene, just before Dandini comes in his princely disguise to personally escort the family to the palace.
*Unlike the opera, this version does have a Fairy Godmother. She's no ordinary one, however: she's the Fairy Queen herself, who lives in the forest with other fairies at her command. (Was it coincidence or not that Massenet's opera Cendrillon would also portray her this way 39 years later?) In the opening scene, Prince Poppetti gets lost in the forest while hunting, and meets the Fairy Queen, who shows him a vision of Cinderella's face inside a hollow in a tree. The Prince falls in love at first sight, and so he resolves to give a ball that very night in hope that his mystery girl will come. Later, when the Fairy Queen comes to Cinderella to transform her rags into a gown, a pumpkin into a coach, etc., she tells her that the "valet" she met and fell in love with earlier is really the Prince.
*Another difference between this play and the opera is that the Prince and Dandini's role-switch doesn't extend through the ball. The "Un segreto d'importanza" scene where Dandini reveals his identity to Baron Balderdash happens just before the ball, not at the end of it.
*According to the original cast list, the roles of Prince Poppetti and Dandini were both played by young women, while the role of Clorinda, the elder, more prominent, and more broadly comical of the two Ugly Sisters, was played by a man. This is in keeping with the pantomime genre's tradition of cross-casting.
*Cinderella's portrayal is very different from what I expected. Maybe it's because this was a "burlesque," not serious theatre, but she's not the sweet, gentle waif of tradition – she's a feisty, witty, sassy thing, who talks back to Clorinda and tells her how useless she is, and even tells her father when he's being ridiculous. It's the type of characterization we've often seen in modern feminist versions of the tale, but this is from 1860!
*Buttoni has his most prominent scene with Cinderella after everyone else has left for the ball, but before the Fairy Queen arrives. He sings a duet with Cinderella where he confesses his love for her, but she insists that her "troth is already plighted" to the Prince's "valet."
*In different pacing from a typical Cinderella, the extensive ball scene is the grand finale. Unusually, the Prince knows full well who Cinderella is the whole time. (Her idiot family doesn't, though; they just comment on how much the mysterious beauty looks like her.) So when she runs away at midnight and loses her glass slipper, he doesn't really need it to find her, but just tries it on the other ladies as a game to officially rule out everyone but Cinderella as a bride. As soon as Dandini brings him her lost slipper, he immediately has all the other maidens who are still at the ball try it on, declaring that he'll marry whomever it fits. Of course it fits none. But then Buttoni brings Cinderella back to the palace, now in her rags again; she asks to try on the slipper, and it does fit, as the Prince knew it would.
*Unfortunately, there's some crude racist language here and there, with pejorative use of terms like "Jew," and even the N-word. I suppose that was typical of the era. Fortunately, it's only now and then, and could easily be cut from modern performances.
I'm looking forward to exploring other British pantomime versions of Cinderella to see how they compare to this early one.

Am I the only one who thought the The Captain becoming Kitty’s Fairy Godmother in the panto kinda showed Kitty’s relationship not just with him but with Mary? Like Fanny having to double up (even though there were “extra” roles like Buttons which could have probably been removed) shows there is a gap left behind by Mary. Furthermore, had Mary been there, she would have been cast as the Fairy Godmother as she is the most motherly (nylkies and all that). So The Captain stepping in shows that he’s now that support for Kitty and that he’s her best friend and I love them <3

THE NEW GHOSTS PICTURES OH MY GOD.
(spoilers ahead obvi)
so of course I’m excited about the Pat storyline and all that but WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KITTY RIGHT NOW.
she’s playing Cinderella DO YALL KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS?!?!?!?!?
there are about to be some PARALLELS drawn between the panto and her own stepsister’s cruelty. in that flashback, she wanted desperately to go to the ball, and it was Eleanor’s scheming that stopped her. another facet usually focused on in adaptations of the story is Cinderella’s grief for her mother, which is also touched upon in Kitty’s backstory
I’m guessing this might start out as the other ghosts thinking she just wants to be the center of attention and humoring her as they cast it, but as they rehearse, it’ll start bringing some of that trauma back up for her. and maybe this time the others, instead of shutting down her realizations about her past to maintain her cheeriness, will actually help her work through it.
according to Kiell’s tweet, Lolly’s work in this ep is going to be especially incredible, so I bet we’re going to get to see some SERIOUS growth, and, as self-appointed #1 Kitty Fan, I am ridiculously excited
like. she’s gonna be facing the same situation, except this time, she will triumph. she’ll be seen as the lovely one she truly is. the help and support she’s longed for will finally come to her (oh my god PLEASE let Cap play the fairy godmother that would be pure gold). she’ll dance with the prince-
-WHICH GETS A PARAGRAPH OF ITS OWN because there have been hints of her having a crush on Thomas since THE FIRST DAMN EPISODE. as someone who’s utterly obsessed with picking apart subtle little nuances in camera acting, I’m telling you, seriously, watch her during the whole show. watch her face after he thinks she’s Alison, goes in to kiss her, and then is led off by Pat. watch the way she’s so nervous during the sorry song but almost starts to smile when he goes off script with the rap verse. take it from someone with plenty of experience being in love with a friend and trying to keep it under the radar, THESE ARE THE SIGNS. of course it’s vital for Thomas’ development for him to somehow realize, despite the whole stay-how-you-died thing, that there’s more to life than romance; once that happens, series 4’s genuine friendship and banter laid a really nice foundation for the writers to eventually go in that direction later with them if they so choose (“burgundy, big time”, the WAY he LOOKS at her in that post-poetry-reading scene holy SHIT, etcetera). and now they’re gonna combine their Melodramatic Theatre Kid Powers™️ to play the best fairytale romance Button House has ever SEEN.
ANYWAY. after nearly three centuries of just longing to feel like part of something, to matter, to be seen, especially in the context of a party (watching her follow Alison’s friends around during that one episode was fucking devastating as someone who’s experienced something like that many a time), my beloved girl is finally gonna get to be the belle of the ball. and to that I say, GOOD 👏 FOR 👏 HER👏.
tldr; GO KITTY GO.

Joker out Pantomime Roles
(based purely on memories of having seen at least 1 panto every year of my childhood so accuracy to actual panto tropes may be off)
This pic of Nace reminds me so much of pantomime acting( specifically the ghost gag where they dramatically looking around for and listening for a ghost) that i had to assign the JO boys each of the main pantomime roles because why not. IDK how familiar other people are with panto so I will give a little context + pictures.
Firstly Nace has such an expressive face and high sass levels required to do really good slapstick and classic panto. He'd definitely have fun lightly bullying the rest of the boys. He would also rock the outfits.
Secondly Martin is the comedy relief sidekick of the lead character(normally called Buttons) The sidekick and the Dame do most of the jokes and crowd work. I just think Nace and Martin would be funny as a double act.
Jan's the villain just because I think he'd enjoy the outfits and being melodramatic. Also sometimes villains and the dame will flirt so a bonus for Jance enjoyers.
Jure is the villains henchman. It just kinda fits as the henchmen are normally very chaotic and little silly. Also the two cats of the band as a villain duo would be cute.
Bojan is going to be the Prince/male main character also called the principal boy(the role is normally played by a girl). They are always overly confident and dramatic af. I think Bojan would enjoy being as dramatic as possible. For reasons, I specifically need him in one of the insanely short mini dress style principal boy costumes not the boring men's costumes(see middle person above).
Finally Kris is the princess. I don't think there's much explanation needed Kris just has major princess vibes, he just looks like he could be a damsel in distress especially with how clumsy he's been lately. Sometime the princess does bully the prince a little too, so in character behaviour to bully Bojan a little.
Also I think they should either do a panto of jack and the bean stalk or sleeping beauty. I don't have reasoning beyond pure vibes.

It's funny how if you said to me "Which BBC Ghosts episode would you want directly replicated in CBS?" I don't think I could say Bump in the Night, because (and feel free to disagree) I think the comedy of that came from the fact that the Button House crew doesn't work as well together as a unit as the CBS crew does (and of course the relationship the Woodstone crew has with Jay is arguably more solid than the one the Button House crew has with Mike.) What do you think?
Definitely. Honestly if the CBS show did Bump In The Night, the episode would probably be over in ten minutes because they got Jay to call the cops quicker.
Hell, if Alberta can use Alexa then she can call 911 herself!
I think I'd like to see US Ghosts replicate something like their own spin on It's Behind You, all the ghosts getting together to put on a show for Sam could be pretty funny. I dunno what the American equivalent of panto is though?

hi! i was just wondering how you manufacture things for your etsy shop? is there somewhere specific that you order them from, or do you make them yourself?
i’m looking into making stuff to sell too, so i was just curious how you do it :) thanks!
Howdy! That's so awesome!
For most of my products I outsource :)
Stickers, keychains, and buttons I use Vograce. They are very reliable and beginner friendly and have many products to chose from.
(However now I have a cricut machine so I hand make my own stickers now with cricut vinyl and laminate I buy off of amazon)
For prints I use VistaPrint. I use the postcards as prints, they are very bright and beautiful and pretty cheap, however I did make an order where 12/50 had printing errors. Due to my poor memory I forgot to contact them and now simply don't care, but I have seen orders being replaced with this issue.
For plushies and enamel pins I use Alibaba, this is my plushie manufacturer. You get assigned a contact that helps you with the plushie making process, they are happy to make changes and send you the sample for approval before mass production. You'll have to have a design already drawn up for them to work with.
This is my pin manufacturer. They have a minimum order of 50 enamel pins, and are great quality. They'll need a diagram of the pin as well as with what panto colours you are after.
Below are images of products I have bought so you get a better idea of what they look like :D

Rewatching all of the episodes released to do last minute, 11th hour thoughts
————————————————
Season 2 episode 1
Just realized Rickey calls himself an “odd bird” which is fitting with the episode title
Also realized that Rickey says “I know everything about you” but instead melting Stede like whenever Ed said, it just pisses him off
Still can’t get over the way Ed says “and these are the kids” and “hi all”
“Vibe on this ship is poisonous” ——-> “turn poison to positivity”
Still crazy he was at sea for 88 days…the idea that the tally marks were for Stede is sad but that it’s also for the record makes it sadder
I wonder if the indigo will ever come back into play
Also it’s interesting that Ed never did anything about Fang crying
Episode 2
Seeing cleaned up and chipper Ed hurts with the context that he wants to die…also every moment with Ed when he’s interacting with Frenchie is just….ooof yeah he looks gorgeous but damn those eyes are dead…like when he says “was someone injured” and “panto”
Idk what to think about Stede’s lack of expression when Lucius says everything that happened was his fault…I mean he does let out a hell of a sigh at the end of the scene
I like Archie’s earring
Does ed feel any guilt at the moment when Jim says “he was your friend “ or was it still just pure anger
Also, Zhang saying “you’re doing great” totally has the “doing great sweetie ❤️❤️” vibes
EPISODE 3
Stede face when he starts to climb over the rail breaks my heart every time
anyone else notice how gentle ed is with his hands? Like when he places them on the table as Jeff during the gravy basket, when he places them on his lap when visiting sick Izzy, when he crosses them in s1e6 when Stede tells him they should do a fuckery
The heartbreak coming on to Stede face when he sees Ed hurts
Wonder if ghost Hornigold is a foreshadowing for living Hornigold coming
Also love the Zheng tries to seduce Olu with a sword
Aww Jim grabbed Archie’s hand when they were escaping the cell
I’m never going to stop yelling about how ed grabs Stede hand at the end of this episode
Also is This Woman’s Work season 2’s The Chain? Either way I tear up
EPISODE 4
I think Ed’s first expression when he wakes up is confusion, of course. But also maybe a little omg you’re here…for a minute, lol. Then he gets pissed. Anyone more eloquent then me have any ideas?
I so wish the cast could talk about this show so we could ask them who voted to kick ed off ship and to keep him
Heh…is that a yay or neigh
I don’t think Stede was actually gonna leave him leave him right
Still wondering if ed called the rabbit a wolf cause he’s still a little out of it lol
I’m glad ed got his hug but HE NEEDS A HUG FROM STEDE
Also I wonder if Buttons led him to Mary’s shop on purpose
I better get ed calling Stede darling or love in epi 8 or I’m going to cry
Omg I know we see bare chested Izzy later and all but dude! Just noticed his opened vest when he’s talking to the unicorn
Man ed is sooo pissed and trying so hard to keep that cold facade but he always wants to “melt back into “ Stede arms..hence his first expression when he wakes up before the anger comes back cause Stede “expects him to back back into his arms the second he pops his head up”
Also I love how fondly he remembers being stabbed by Stede but also it huuuurts because of epi. 6 “I had to make him do it…hes so fragile”
First time I saw epi 4 I thought Annie was gonna throw up in the bowl buttons found
Episode 5
Love that Lucius points out that ed never actually said I’m sorry to them, he’s right and I hope he gives them proper apology later
So Ed’s emotion and breaking of his voice but also the YouTuber quality of it….anyone have any thoughts?
Ed’s apology and the whole “restore my reputation” hits different with Taikas fuck up, doesn’t it?
Still going crazy over Ed’s face when Stede says it’s a long story. Is he sad? That stede feels like he should stop talking? Or what…
I love ed setting boundaries, well done and Stede’s instant acceptance
Also, did David really put in a song that goes “you’re so baby”…..he knows… he knows ed is our babygirl
EPISODE 6
Gosh but I do love Bronson Pinchot. I first saw him as Mr. Toomy and I love that he brought that energy here
I don’t think this is the day after but a few days maybe
I wonder why ed put on his leathers….cause he had no clothes yet or…? Cause Stede says he can use the treasure to buy new clothes but in the next episode he is wearing clothes he clearly gathered together from the ship
DO WEEEEEEE? Love Fang
During the scene where they are getting the supplies for the party…..Where did ed goooo??? He is walking on the bridge and suddenly is gone and then back….did he trip over guitar guy ( who I guess is Ned)??
WHY IS RICKEYS NOSE STRING PURPLE, That’s Ed’s color!
Ed’s little hey and soft eyes when Stede walks up is precious
I love the community during the party
When ed sees Izzy, his face…WHAT IS HE THINKING
Heh, just noticed a torturer with little sunglasses on
The noose around Hellcat Maggie’s neck
Does anyone else think they may have not gone all the way during sex? Tbh that’s my head canon I think?
EPISODE 7
The morning after robe is lovely…. As much as I wanted it to be from the auxiliary wardrobe, I absolutely love the idea Ed chose it for himself
Omg I can’t with Stede’s squeak
Lol the cigarette behind Lucius’s ear
I can’t hear Swede say “my wife” without flashing back to Borat
Ed’s sad look when he’s looking at the fishing boat hurts
Also, the guy Stede sets Hey simulation sorry I missed it on fire only gives me Freddy Krueger vibes
Also, I had originally posted ages ago about Ed not being happy… And yeah whenever Stede says you don’t sound happy… 😭 I don’t know how to articulate what I’m thinking
Oh Stede, loosing ed and then his crew
The tears in Stedes eyes, he’s so upset about loosing his family and ed
Still can’t with the fight
———————————————-
So I think I’m ready for episode 8! (Lol no I’m not) but this has been a good run and here’s hoping for season 3!
