Recruiting Peter in Civil War: a War Crime?

Today we are going to review this statement:

Tony “blackmailed a teenager to help fight his battles for him (Civil War) (which for the record, constitutes as a fucking war crime)”.

Part 1. Not a war crime: check my post about war crimes here. War crime is a crime committed during a war, by a party of the conflict.

MCU's “Civil War” was not a war. It was a conflict between a few people, that included one fight and a chase. The fight at the end of the movie between Tony and Steve with Bucky was not a part of this particular conflict, but a conflict on its own. From the government’s side, this situation was a law enforcement operation to capture a group of fugitives, where Tony’s side represented the law enforcement group under U.N. authority, not a nation’s armed forces.

The definition of Armed Forces: “the combined military, naval, and air forces of a nation”.

In comics (Earth 616) it was indeed a war, but not in the MCU. That’s first.

Second, “Under the Statute of the International Criminal Court, conscripting or enlisting children into armed forces or groups constitutes a war crime in both international and non-international armed conflicts (ICC Statute, Article 8(2)(b)(xxvi) and (e)(vii)).”

Tony did not enlist Peter in the armed forces or the Avengers.

And third, “The bans on recruitment of children below the age of 15 enshrined in Article 77 of  Additional Protocol I, and in Article 4 of Additional Protocol II are also considered to prohibit accepting voluntary enlistment (P I, Art. 77 (2); P II, Art. 4(3)(c)).”

“2. The Parties to the conflict shall take all feasible measures in order that children who have not attained the age of fifteen years do not take a direct part in hostilities and, in particular, they shall refrain from recruiting them into their armed forces. In recruiting among those persons who have attained the age of fifteen years but who have not attained the age of eighteen years, the Parties to the conflict shall endeavour to give priority to those who are oldest.” (Protocol Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, Art. 77 (2)).

Here we got to an actual error from the SMFFH filmmakers’ side. Before SMFFH Peter’s age at the time of Civil War was planned to be 15 (see directors’ and screenwriters’ commentaries). In SMFFH Peter’s birthday was set to Aug 10, 2001, making him 14 years old at the time of Civil War. We cannot use random date placements made by SMFFH creators to define serious stuff, and also use another movie’s filmmakers’ decisions that were made after Civil War. So we must go with the fact that at the time of Civil War Peter was 15 years old, as was stated by the creators of CA:CW.

Conclusion: Peter was 15 years old, and if he were recruited to participate in a war, it would not be a war crime. But, he also was not enlisted in the armed forces. And Civil War was not an actual war, but a law enforcement operation under UN jurisdiction. So, yes, Tony is not a war criminal. Again. Very disappointing.

If you guys have any other ideas of how to accuse him of war crimes – go ahead. I’ll check them all.

The Tardis console whirrs and flashes with its usual alien business. The doctor stood sorting things with the computer screen he wasn't really doing much as he often kept glancing across to Y/n, as he felt compelled to keep an eye on her. 

Y/n sat in the leather chair beside the console, having kicked off her boots revealing her fluffy white polar bear socks, grey leggings, white and grey plaid skirt and sleeve grey top with her large white yawn jumper over her, she'd pulled the sleeves of her jumper around her hands. Her head on the chair her hair up in pigtails, and her eyes closed as she took a small nap. 

She was feeling sick, and had been since their trip to Felazian Seven's Crystal Spa. 

And he was getting progressively more concerned about her. 

"You feeling alright?" He asked,

She stirred, "Humm? Ohh... yeah... sorry I uhh..."

He sighed and moved over kneeling on the glass floor and taking her cheek in his hand moving her face gently, "Come here,"

"I'm just a little tired," she says,

"Umm..." He mumbled as he checked her over, "Tired?"

"Mhm," she nodded, 

"Fatigued?"

"Mhm,"

"How do you feel? in yourself?"

"Cold... very cold..."

"Okay," he nodded taking her hand, "Let me see them," He said,

She tried to resist but he pushed up the sleeves of her jumper revealing that her hand was now this matt black as if covered with a velvet paint that seemed to suck all the light around it, He was taken back but he kept quiet not wanting to scare her, 

"Open your eyes for me,"

"It hurts to -" she whined 

"I know, I know it hurts but you have to open your eyes." he pleaded, 

She stirred and whined but slowly peeled open her eyes and they too were nothing but this darkness as if taken by the void. He nodded slowly and moved to press a tender kiss to her forehead,

"Don't you worry, close those little eyes and rest." He told her as he quickly got up to go to the console but she grabbed his hand,

"What's happening to me...."

"it's nothing-"

"Doctor..."

"Some crystal spas across the universe filter their water through a crystal known as Peslin, peslin is a good filler and is known to break down many different contaminants which it stores within itself. It's cheap and effective but... if left unchanged for too long peslin can become full of contaminants and when it does it begins to grow a... form of mould, in most species it's filtered out through usual biology at worse a week in bed..." he explained, "For humans, it can incubate sickness known as void sickness, the sickness flips the orders for your photoreceptive chromophores,your skin and body turn black and you reject light. You lack energy, body turns voidulous,"

"I- am I gonna die."

"no. No." He demanded, "You are not going to die." He said holding her face in his hands, "Rest, I am taking you to the best most advanced hospital in the universe and they are going to fix you up and you'll be back with those beautiful eyes that make me weak in no time." 

she nodded, and he nodded too and kissed her lips before he went to the console and began to get the tardis to head there. 

The doctor sat in the chair beside the bed holding Y/n's hand as she was slowly treated for the void sickness, he watched her with worried eyes before she slowly stirred and opened her eyes. As she did it revealed that her eyes were better back to their sweet Y/E/C eyes, which made him smile.

"Hi,"

"Hello,"

"Am I getting better?"

"You are getting much better sweetheart," He cooed moving and giving her a kiss,

Earth 2010 X Earth 616 Crossover AU Ficlet

A/N: Apparently I missed Stephen's birthday - which i didn't know was largely decided to be in Nov - so for that let me just share a snippet of THE crossover au that actually started the whole Earth 2010 world in my head. What started as a 'what if MCU tony & steph ended up in a world where they were married for YEARS pre-titan pre-14000605 time escape' idea ended up here. so here's smth from that that lives rent free in my brain. The focus is still on our E-2010 boys tho the MCU boys are there in the background.

"Steph..." Tony's voice - his Tony's voice - spoke out shakingly, cutting into the discussion Stephen was having with his alternate self about the infinity stones.

Stephen turned around to face his husband only to find him looking at him with concern etched into his every feature. "Tony?" Stephen asked, stepping away from the universe hoppers and moving closer to where Tony was in his lab. Tony put a hand out in front of him to stop Stephen in his tracks. Stephen could see the other Stark & Strange glance at each other with the same perturbed expression they'd been wearing since they got here, but he ignored them.

"What the FUCK do you mean that the infinity stones have been affecting you for years?" Tony spat out, looking directly at him.

Stephen blanched. He slipped up. He forgot that this was ever something serious and he let it slip. Now he knows that Tony won't let it go. Stephen hesitated, trying to find the best way to word it without his over-protective husband going all nuclear on him.

Tony was getting impatient so before he could shout again, Stephen sighed and relented. "I only realized it after I came back from the Dark Dimension. After I used the time stone like that the first time around."

"Spit it out Stephenie."

"Each infinity stone protects it's user to a certain degree when it's being wielded by them. Especially when wielded individually." Stephen paused.

"We're the protectors of the Time Stone and it's wielders so it protects us when we use it." The other Strange echoed immediately, as if on instinct.

"Yes. But each stone is different. That's why the Aether reacted differently to Jane Foster vs the Power stone with the Guardians and so on. I am the keeper of the Time Stone and thus, the Time stone protects me.... across all of time." Stephen finished slowly. "You're protected across all of time?" His Tony asked, his brain already forming the connections in microseconds. Stephen nodded.

"Essentially I had and have the time stone's energy around me. Always. Since always. Even when I had no clue about its existence or of the mystic arts." "So you're saying that each infinity stone emits a unique energy signal and you're implying that the different energies interact when in contact with one another?" This time the comment came from the other Stark. But before Stephen could reply, his husband finally spoke. "How long Stephen?"

Stephen didn't drag it out this time. "Since the Tesseract. In your lab. It shocked me."

"You're telling me you've been getting electrocuted by infinity stones SINCE 2010?! AND YOU DIDN"T TELL ME?"

Clint: Shouldn't we be glad that the one civilian we had when all that mind stone, Ultron shit went down was the one civilian who was apparently immune to said magical artifact's powers? Bruce: You know I did wonder how Stephen seemed to keep his composure every time the rest of us were being affected by the mind stone.

Steve: Hmm. Makes you wonder how else Stephen's been helping us even before we knew it. Thor: Oh yes, I remember back when Mjolnir met Strange the first time. I always wondered why she tried talking to him, because I thought of Stephen as a non-magical being. She only ever reacted like that around my brother Loki or my mother. 616 Tony: You're telling me your Stark let his husband be around dangerous things like Loki's scepter? Let him be around you lot and the trouble that follows the Avengers around? 616 Stephen: Excuse me?! What are you -

Natasha (snorts audibly at 616 Tony's question): As if anyone can stop Stephen Strange from getting whatever he wants or stop him from doing whatever he thinks he should do.

Rhodey: Please, Stephen's been a part of the team since the start, even if he was just a doctor back then. There's no way Tony could stop him from getting involved. Not when he was involved.

Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: E Words: 7,921 Tags: Flirting, Missions, Smut

Summary: Where else can you fight a giant insect in the afternoon, attend a fancy charity event in the early evening, and spend the rest of the night learning some surprising things about your coworkers?

Reasons why I love it: There is so much to love in this fic. The action is amazing, the team dynamics are super fun, and of course, the Stony flirting is fantastic. I adore Ultraviolet's writing style, it's so engaging and really makes the characters feel like real people. Plus, the smut is incredible. I love this fic so much, and I hope you'll go and check it out for yourself!

Summary: They were just stealing a bit of quiet time.

Reasons why I love it: I actually like Sharon as a character in canon, but I'm also a big fan of her being a sort of evil ex of Steve's, so this fic is right up my alley. I love how Steve doesn't hesitate to stand by Tony and deals with the problem straight away. Definitely check this one out, it's great!

Summary: Steve's lost the serum. Steve's not an Avenger anymore. Steve's supposed to be past these types of missions, even if he'll never say no to punching Hydra goons in the face. But if the Avengers need him, Steve will answer their call. But then an unexpected visitor from the past joins the fray. Steve's past self has lots of things to say: about the future, the team, and Steve's relationship with Tony.

Reasons why I love it: I'm always a fan of multiverse shenanigans, and this one is no exception. Steve kind of breaks my heart with his insecurities about his place on the team, but the ending is so hopeful that it makes up for all of it. I love this one, and I hope you go and check it out for yourself!

Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: E Words: 5,055 Tags: Friends with Benefits, Light Dom/Sub, Hickmanvengers

Summary: “Please?” Tony’s voice is low and hoarse. It drags against Steve like the head of a match; a single puff of oxygen could turn that friction into flame. This is what it’s like, being with Tony. So many years spent wondering and here is the answer. It’s like being one breath away from burning.

Reasons why I love it: God, all the emotions packed into this are so good. The smut is incredible, and Steve's feelings for Tony are as beautiful as they are heartbreaking. Especially once you get to the end and that last sentence just punches you in the gut. I love this fic so much, and I bet you will too, so go and read it!

Everybody Got Naked and We Got Cap Back Day by Letterblade

Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: T Words: 5,085 Tags: Fix-It, Skrulls, Angsty Schmoop

Summary: The aftermath of the Civil War. Captain America is dead and buried, his country and her heroes torn and staggering. So for this series It will be based on MCU and Doctor Who but for Doctor Who only a few episodes same goes to MCU because I want to make sure the Marvel Timeline is accurate. So in this series there are 'Big Changes' and 'Big Additions'.

For example, the big change is that the Daleks are not evil and the one who destroyed Gallifrey is the Mad Titan (Thanos) and the Daleks in this universe are good and they are the ones who help Gallifrey survive but Gallifrey is still destroyed and some Daleks are almost destroyed and yes Time lord, Time Lady and more Timey people are all extinct. BUT! Daleks are still there and yeah they are good.. not the EXTERMINATE! no.

Cyberman is still evil and still wants to make humans more advanced so there is not much change.

the name "Captain America" was in-universe just a propaganda dancing stage show persona that Steve was put into, he hated it and wanted to actually fight for real. Every "Cap" thing should be treated as a foreign imposition that Steve has to muscle past in order to be a Real Hero.

A core (but often forgotten) part of Steve's character is him being treated as a joke even after the serum at first, and this is in part of his foil-ness with Bucky, who was in the military first and given the more dangerous and bloodier missions while Cap is pushed out to look good for the military propaganda camera crew that followed them around. A huge part of the Spectre of Captain America is that the identity was superimposed onto Steve and he was forced to play a part so he can strive to be a Real Hero too, and repeatedly a lot of those Real Hero moments are of Steve being in defiance to the flag that the Cap persona was made to serve. Steve's most human moments is when we remember that he was a person before he was told to be "Cap". So, ofc July 4th ain't his birthday lmaooo.

Normal Steve (616 Before civil war, AA, MAA, emh, ma, you get the idea, even Hickmanvengers and ults Steve) all enjoyed being cap because they were able to be a moving force for young people and as we all know if you've read the comics steve loves doig stuff as cap and teaching kids and making people say and helping people and shit! He love it! As much as he is the personifying thing of a flying flag and some adaptations go to that stuff as being the core of his character it is only a small part of what is a symbol for peace and I think you don't realize that because on multiple occasions he disavows his captain America identity(Sentinel of Liberty, Y'know when he handed his Cap identity to Sam???) to help people without the ties and I think that's something alot of people forgot that despite the fact that due to the entire of who Steve is it wasnt the suit that built who he was and what he represents it was his character and choices.

That man is not a blank slate. He represents more than the war he faught in and the country he faught for and saying he's just that is a misservice to his character and who he representss outside and inside of the suit, any suit.

A (Very) Brief Overview of The Spider Tree of Life

Let's start with the basics. All spiders fall into the following classification, from least to most specific:

Kingdom: Animalia (animals - cannot produce their own food, can move voluntarily, and are multicellular) Phylum: Arthropoda (animals with jointed exoskeletons made of chitin) Subphylum: Chelicerata (chelicerates - possess feeding appendages called chelicerae) Class: Arachnida (arachnids - eight legs with an additional pair of appendages, fused head and thorax, and several more unique traits) Order: Araneae (spiders - chelicerates that possess spinnerets for silk production, and have special male copulatory organs that we'll get into some other time)

Okay, so we've reached the clade that includes all spiders: Araneae. This is the order level. Just below order, spiders have a level called the suborder ("sub" meaning "under"). Here, spiders split into two suborders: Mesothelae and Opisthothelae.

Mesothelae is an incredible group of spiders with only a few extant (non-extinct) taxa. The defining characteristic of its members is an abdomen that's segmented by plates called tergites. This is a trait that was also present in the ancestors of spiders, so we may consider the Mesothelae to be "primitive" since they possess ancestral traits. All other spiders (the Opisthothelae) have abdomens that are fused into a single unit, which is the derived (non-ancestral) trait.

Okay, so now we know the two suborders of spiders: Mesothelae (the "primitive" segmented spiders) and Opisthothelae (the non-segmented spiders). But we're not done yet! Opisthothelae divides into two infraorders ("infra" meaning "below" or "further on"). These infraorders are Mygalomorphae and Araneomorphae.

Mygalomorphae shares some common features with the Mesothelae - namely downward-facing chelicerae (mouthparts) and two pairs of book lungs (meaning four total). The araneomorphs, however, lack these ancestral features, instead sporting chelicerae that move in from the sides (causing the fangs to appear horizontal or "cross-acting") and fewer book lungs (only one pair or even zero!). Most araneomorphs also have tracheal systems, not unlike insects and myriapods (though the spider tracheal system evolved independently!).

Finally, within the infraorders Mygalomorphae and Araneomorphae exist a myriad of diverse spider families. Araneomorphae is by far the more speciose and diverse of the two, but they both have their own unique charms. As of April 2023, there are a whopping 132 spider families recognized!

I really should write more angst, tbh... that said, the only fic I currently have that can really be called angsty and ends without a happy ending is Worse Than Myth.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I would say Eidetic Image has a happy ending, if you don't count the teaser/cliffhanger that is the epilogue. Otherwise probably Change is All?

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I've been writing fanfiction in some form for 20+ years and posting for nearly as long, so I've definitely gotten a few hate comments over the years, but nothing on any of my recent stuff. In part because I'm not that known, probably.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, and it really depends on the muse.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I don't really write any crazy crossovers, although technically, most of my Marvel fics are a fusion of various Marvel sources (MCU, 616, etc.) and I've also got a crossover between SG-1 and Atlantis, but they're really the same fandom families and don't really count as real crossovers, imo.

Not to my knowledge and it's my hope that I never do.

I had several translated under my previous penname, but none of my recent stuff; I've divorced myself from the fandom in question.

Under a previous penname, yes.

Asking a shipper's favorite ship is cruel and unusual, but it's probably almost definitely IronHawk or Stuckony. Also Spirk. I also really love the Lovesquare in all its permutations.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I don't have an WIPs currently being posted for this very reason. So many ideas. With my motivation and butterfly brain, I'll never finish them all.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I'm pretty great with dialogue and emotive scenes, I think? I'm not sure--please let me know!

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Not actually writing even though I really want to. I also struggle with action scenes, but everyone says they always come out fine, so I'm not sure.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Oh. Oh, this is a bad question to ask me.

Listen, if the readers are supposed to understand what's being said, then freaking write it in the same language as the rest of fic and italicize to indicate it's in a different language. If I have to go hunting for a goddamn translation, or scroll back and forth to the mf-ing notes, when I'm supposed to know what's being said, odds are very high that I'm going to simply stop reading a fic. It's bad writing. Yes, I said it. It's bad writing--it's your job as a writer to make sure a reader can understand what they need to without making them jump through hoops. If your "aesthetic" matters more to you than making your narrative readily accessible to your readers, you need to rethink having another language being spoken. That said, if readers aren't supposed to understand what is said (or it's obvious/doesn't matter in the case of, like, spells or something), or you work the translation into the story right away, I'm all for it. Those are the only times I find it acceptable to actually have another language that's spoken written in a language different from the rest of the narrative.

Top Ten Moments in Die Hard, as Represented by a Line of Dialogue

Yippee-ki-yay, merry Christmas. Tis the season to be jolly, to eat a lot of stollen, to sing some below-par songs, and above all else to watch Christmas movies. And the best Christmas movie is, of course, Die Hard.

Let me set the record straight: there is virtually nothing in film discourse more boring than the question “is Die Hard a Christmas movie?”. As far as I’m concerned, it’s incontrovertible; it’s set at Christmas, it features a ton of Christmas songs on the soundtrack, Christmas is both a plot device (the building is empty for the holidays apart from one Christmas party) and a character motivation (the estranged family getting back together for the season), the juxtaposition of tension and violence with the festivities is the source of both pathos and humour, and the main female character is called Holly. Now, there are plenty of films set at Christmas that I don’t think really are “Christmas films”; Die Hard is not one of them. I think the only reason people don’t want to think of it as a Christmas film is because it’s an action movie. But here’s the thing; it’s not just the best Christmas movie, it’s also the best action movie! It’s a double-threat! It’s really funny too so maybe it’s a triple threat.

Anyway, that’s all very boring; I wish we could all just accept that some people, for whatever reason, don’t think it’s a “proper” Christmas film, some people do, and leave it at that. I promise I won’t quibble if you cite, I dunno, Holiday Inn (not set at Christmas!) or When Harry Met Sally (New Year!) or Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (Thanksgiving!), or even most Shane Black movies (Christmas is the backdrop but not really a functional part of the plot or theme in most cases!) as long as you let me have my Die Hard. I’ll meet you halfway and say that I don’t really think Die Hard 2 is very good as a Christmas movie! That’s an action film that takes place at Christmas, and whilst the snow is very important to the film, the fact it’s actually Christmas is less so. But! I repeat: this is boring! Let’s move onto the fun part!

Because Die Hard is my favourite film set at Christmas – and also my favourite action film full-stop – I want to celebrate it at this, the time for miracles. And what better way to do that than to highlight, in my own special way, my favourite moments from the film? And because the script by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza is so packed with terrific dialogue, why not choose moments represented by that dialogue? And so that’s what I have done.

Do please enjoy, then come out to coast and have a few laughs.

Merry Christmas. Ho-ho-ho.

“You ask for miracles, I give you the FBI”: one of Die Hard’s greatest strengths is the effectiveness of its criminals. Their plan is really quite good, and they function together as an incredibly well-oiled team. There are multiple scenes of them working together, obviously highly trained – but at the same time, they bicker, they drop things, they sweat. They’re a team of professionals working very hard. But the strength of the plan, of Hans’ cleverness, is outlined in this scene, when the whole fake-terrorist thing reveals itself.

“Take this under advisement, jerk-weed”: similarly, there are a lot of things to love about McClane – we’ll get to more later – but he’s also a great planner. He plots and schemes against Hans and his team, counting their numbers, learning their names, following their plans. And here, he takes very direct action o cut down their numbers and try to save lives, dropping a makeshift bomb down an elevator shaft. It’s clever and goes boom.

“Hans, bubbe, I’m your white knight”: moving aside from the two stars of the show (Willis and Rickman), we have this tremendous scene were uber-douche Ellis tries to talk down McClane. It’s full of great dialogue and interesting mannerisms from Hart Bochner (love the way he drinks Coke). But again, Wilis and Rickman are superb, because the real conversation, the real battle of wits, is between these two, both of whom know what’s going on over poor Ellis’ head.

“Clay. Bill Clay”: back to the two stars, this is an incredible scene of shifting tensions. Which of them has the upper hand? Is Hans tricking John? Is he at his mercy? It’s almost like the scene in the coffee shop in Heat. And, once again, the dialogue is excellent.

“Now I have a machine gun. Ho-ho-ho”: one of the film’s most famous and iconic moments, McLane declaring both his existence and his intent, and making a big statement. It’s bold and – for us – kinda funny, but it’s got smarts and sense to it, as he uses the chaos it creates to learn more about who he’s up against.

“I could talk about industrialisation and men’s fashion all day”: probably the first time we really get to knuckle down with Hans Gruber, in a scene that really shows off Rickman’s skill in the role. His urbanity, his quiet sense of unassuming threat, his sense of humour as he interrogates Takagi, is incredible. Full of tension and tragedy.

“Tell her I’m sorry”: as well as “ho-ho-ho”, one of the film’s undying images is McLane pulling a huge chunk of glass from his foot. But this scene is also a tender pause in the action as a battered John begins to doubt he’ll make it through the night, achieving a realisation over his relationship. Al, meanwhile, recounts his own tragic history of mistakenly shooting a child (a plot point that I don’t think you’d choose to include nowadays). The mortality on display was a stark contrast to the prevalent He-Man style of action hero in the eighties and helped humanise John.

“Come out to the coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs”: another aspect that humanised John was his humour. Yes he’s a smartass loudmouth who has a pop at everyone, but he’s also constantly talking to himself and making little quips and asides. This moment – crawling through a vent! – is a classic as he suddenly stops and makes the wry, iconic gag.

“Make fists with your toes”: I love the opening of this film, McLane jetting in and immediately out of his element. The cheery businessman he meets, with his jaunty story of combatting jetlag, is a nice window into another world but also establishes the vulnerability of John being barefoot for the whole film. Plus it’s kind of a funny gag.

“Yippee ki-yay…”: ah, here we are. The film’s most famous line; Bruce Willis’ own “I’ll be back”. It makes sense here, as he’s called a cowboy by Hans, and expresses a fondness for Roy Rogers. But he’s McLane, so of course he has to twist the knife and be a jerk, so he adds (ahem) the “motherfucker”. Of course he does! And then at the end Hans throws it back at him, but he’s ready for it! With the hidden gun and the Christmas tape!

Like men’s fashion, I could talk about this movie all day. There are so many moments and great lines. I’ve not said a lot about Al, and nothing about the various other cops and FBI guys, nor really Holly or William Atherton. It’s one of my favourite films, probably the best American action movie, and the greatest Christmas film of all time.

I can’t wait to see what they do for New Years.

prompt: when your best friend decides to leave your colony to go find the love of his life, you decide to join him on his journey even if you aren’t so happy about where this journey is going

Welp I did it, I took it into my own hands. I am writing a joel dawson series. Because we👏need 👏more👏joel👏fics👏 it’s basically the movie, almost the same script but obviously slightly different…ENJOY! <3

No one in my generation or later had a typical upbringing, I mean some of us did but then the world ended. This type of thing sounds straight out of some apocalyptic movie, but we basically live in one now. Agatha 616, an asteroid heading straight for earth, I know, so original. So we all came together and did what we do best, blow things up. Yup, we blew up teh asteroid, and humanity was saved! We thought. But here’s the thing about rockets, they are made of a bunch of chemical compounds which eventually rained back down on earth. Suddenly there were these Aileen creatures that mutated and started eating us. Ants, lizards, roaches, crocodiles, you name it. Our president was even killed by a giant moth. Ya….not so original now huh? We suddenly need tanks to kill ants, oh man I remember the good old days when a shoe would do just fine. Sometimes even the tanks didn’t work. Eventually the really big ones and our military took each other out and we lost 95% of the human population in a year! Those of us who survived hid, bunkers, caves, panic rooms, all around the world. So for the last seven years I’ve been hiding in an underground bunker. It’s really not as bad as it sounds, and it’s better than getting eaten alive. It’s a great group of people and we all love each other.

“Are you sure they’re asleep?”

“Who?”

“Y/N and joel!”

“Oh ya I’m sure”

“Joel? Y/n?”

“He’s asleep”

Actually we are both awake. Me and my best friend joel have kinda mastered faking being asleep. Our beds are right across from each other so we normally just lie there and make stupid faces at each other. We are the only two single people in our bunker. Nice huh? Joel is my best friend. I met him when I joined the colony. He’s the sweetest. It’s funny cause everyone thinks we should just have sex already because that’s literally all everyone else does. But we are way above that. Anyway, joel is in love with his girlfriend from before the colony, her name is Aimee. With one “I” and two “e”s. He loves to talk about her, he writes her letters. So in reality, I am the only one who is not in love in this bunker. I’ve never had a boyfriend, ever, even before the world ended.

We don’t really get any sleep. The moaning kinda keeps us awake. I got up and out of my bed and headed for the kitchen. I heard Joel’s bed creak and then his footsteps as he followed behind me. Another annoying thing about being down here is that to get to the kitchen from my room, you have to walk though other people’s bedrooms. Oh shit, they are busy, why would they leave their door open. Me and Joel stopped.

“Oh” joel and I said in unison

“Hey Y/N! Hey Joel!” Ava said

“Oh hey Ava” Joel said, we didn’t dare look over to our left.

“Y/N how’s it going?” Tim asked

“T-totally good tim, h-how are you doing” I asked

“Yeah, good” he responded

“I uh we couldn’t sleep” said Joel looking at the ceiling

“Ya we know the feeling” Ava said with a laugh

“Yeah probably not for the…..same reasons” joel said looking straight ahead

“Your guyses door was open, did you…did you know that?” I asked

“Yeah we know” they said

I shook my head and knitted my eyebrows together

“Okay” joel trailed off

Ever since Tim’s parents were eaten by a swarm of termites he and Ava have gotten really close, in every way.

“Okay, goodnight” joel said as we walked

Basically everyone is coupled up down here, a baby was born last winter! Welcome to the apocalypse kid. Ok if we ever get out of this, that would be an awesome story to tell your kids. “Oh ya I was born in an underground bunker doing a monster apocalypse” “yes exactly like World War Z but with bugs bigger than a 5 story building”. I mean come on.

So your probably wonder how the hell we get food, we’ll we have a cow. Gurdy. Gurdy is great. We also have a hunting party that brings back whatever they can from the surface. It’s gotten harder and harder, cause we ran out of bullets. And facing one of those things with a handmade weapon is just as hard as it sounds. It’s very very difficult. I go with them….sometimes. I still get scared. But I’ve been out quite a lot, especially compared to my man joel over here. I’ve been out maybe 30 times, he’s been out��maybe once, or not even. He’s the chef of the bunker. He makes super good Minestrone.

Me and joel like to hang out with Mavis. A robot. Yup. Not much for conversation, her batter is shot. Just like every other mavis I would imagine. When I’m not hunting we hang out with her. But sometimes I just go read. Reading and joel keep me sane. I mean sometimes joel drives me insane but I still love him. I have quite the collection of books too! I’ve got Emma by Jane Austen, a couple random ones that we found, all the hunger games and Harry Potter books, some mysteries that stopped being mysteries after a while, and then of course some smutty romance books for personal entertainment.

Joel likes to say that his thing is target practice. He has never hit the target but ya know, gotta entertain yourself. I think his thing is drawing though, he has this book that he draws in from Aimee. It’s really cool actually. He’s really good.

I sat watching Joel as he tried to hit the target, laughing a little every time he missed. It was cute how hard he tried.

“Shut up” he said shaking his laugh away

I laughed again, but then suddenly the lights started flickering. You could hear screeches and creeks echoing through the bunker. Joel turned to look at me. Worry and determination in his eyes. We both scrambled out of the room and into the kitchen where everyone was preparing.

“Hustle, hustle people we’ve gotta move”

I turned to look at Joel but then realized that he wasn’t next to me. Where did he go? Worry flooded through me. Suddenly the clanking of our weapon started behind me.

“Hey guys!” Joel said as he rammed into the railing, I shook my head. “Guys! I’ve got the weapons” he smiled at me

A few people walked over to him taking them out of his hands

“Stay” said Tim

“W-what?” Joel asked looking around in confusion

Everyone was talking and barking orders “grab what you need and let’s go! Y/N you coming?”

My eyes shot open “yes! Yup!” I jumped up and grabbed the bow and arrow from Joel.

“W-what's happening?” He asked innocently “what’s going on?”

“There’s a breach” said Tim

“What do you mean? Like inside the bunker breach?!” He asked

“Yes joel! Now come on!” I told him, patting him on the pack as I followed the others

He followed me and watched the plan get arranged

“Anna, Y/N and I will engage. Anderson and Tom plank him”

“Plank him, ya ok where do you guys need me? You want me to uh come through the rear or..?” Joel asked eagerly

“I don’t think your going to pass this joel” I told him

“Pass what? You guys need help, let me help” said clutching his crossbow

“You gonna make me say it?” said Sam

“Say what?!” God he was so adorably clueless

“You can’t handle it joel, your shook” said Sam, we all began getting into positions

“Ya ok, yes so you guys don’t get scared..ever?” He asked still getting ready to fight

“We get scared, we all get scared joel, but you get really scared” said Sam

“They are trying to make you feel bad joel” I said sweetly, trying to calm him down

“We love you joel”

“But your a liability”

“Ok why did that speech feel so rehearsed? And what about Y/N? She’s like…ya know?” He said bobbing his head

“Joel-“ suddenly the bunker shook and the lights flicked again

“Ok 30 meters out! Let’s move!” And we were off

Leaving joel and some others behind. You could hear the growling of whatever we were up against

I followed the others and listened carefully. I was freaking shaking. Don’t ask how I got sucked into becoming one the the hunters. Kinda just happened and I was just-

“OH SHIT!” I heard someone yell, it was too dark to see. Someone was gone, that thing took them. I couldn’t even see it. Oh fuck my life. Everyone began scattering, running away from the monster. I stopped running to take a breath, when I realized I was alone. Nicely done Y/N. The lights kept flickering. I heard something blow up in the distance.

“Conned? Conner?” I heard a whisper, one I knew all too well. Shit, joel. I ran toward the sound, and had no idea I was also running toward certain death. I stopped running. There it was, that thing. I’d never seen this before. I didn’t recognize it. I stayed silent, not moving at all. It slowly crawled over a shower curtain. Oh fuck. He was going toward joel! I quickly grabbed my bow and arrow and shot it. Right though the face. Next to its….eye I guess you could call it. Joel stood there, frozen.

I slowly walked over to him “Joel, hey are you ok?” I asked as I slipped my hand into his. He was trembling. Tears ran down his cheeks. He has a bad freezing problem, so I've been helping him work on it.

About an hour later I sat with Joel, still holding his hand as he stared out into space. We could hear everyone talking. How could this have happened?

“It ripped through steal”

“Anderson and I resealed the Breach point, nothings getting in that way again”

“But why did it happen?”

I tried to toon it out, and I hoped Joel did too.

“Joel, do you wanna talk about it?” I asked squeezing his hand, he looked so sad, which just crushed me

He shook his head

“Ok….” I nodded, I leaned into hug him but was interrupted by his voice

“How far away is Aimee's colony?” He asked

I pulled back, looking at him confused. The talking stopped and everyone look at him

“What?” Tim asked

“Aimee’s colony, how far away is it?” He repeated

“About 85 miles” he said as he furrowed his brows

“How long will it take to get there?”

“What do you mean joel?” I asked leaning closer to him

“Just humor me, how long?” He insisted

“7 days” said Tim

“Someone who’s armed and trained would hardly last 50miles, but you…joel” Ava said, I felt bad for him, he really didn’t deserve any of this

“Alright” Tim continued “now I need volunteers”

“I’m gonna go” joel said

No one said anything, they just stared

“It’s an impossible journey joel” said Tim, crossing his arms

Joel stood up, moving around my chair. “No im serious…I love you guys but there’s only one person in this world who ever truly made me happy and she’s only 85 miles away” he said strongly “I’m gonna go see her” I could see his mind was made up

God he was such a romantic, how could you not love this guy? Sure it hurts when your best friend tells you that you didn’t make him truly happy. Especially when you maybe sorta kinda have a crush on him.

He let out a breath “woah, that felt awesome” he said as he walked off to start packing

I stood there for a second processing and thinking, but then suddenly my mouth took over and well….

“I’m coming with you!” I said, he froze “I mean you can’t leave me here with these middle aged people, and your my best friend so” I shrugged

“I’ll come back for you I promise” he walked over to me “I can’t let you put yourself in even more danger” he said grabbing my arms

“I can’t let you put yourself in danger knowing that I could have helped protect you” I said, he stared blankly at me

I smiled “o-ohK…then I guess…” he trailed off

“Cool I’ll go pack” I skipped past him. Was I scared? Hell yes. But like I said, I needed to help joel and protect him in every way I can. And sure I wasn’t so happy that he was returning to his long lost love but if it made him happy then I would live. And anyway, two do shorten the road.
