Chapter 4: Tomorrow became today
John meets Olivia - An Olivia's Prague Adventures Subseries
Olivia hopped on the tram that would take her to the city centre, to her lifelong crush, to John. She had spent the last 24 hours in a state of excitement that made her feel like a teenager. At times she would only be able to make scenarios on her head, once again imagining what it would be like to kiss him, how he would hopelessly fall in love with her the moment he saw her... But she was also freaking out. She tried on different outfits but nothing seemed right: she didn't want to look too casual, after all, she had to impress him to make him think of her as the woman she now was; at the same time, she didn't want it to be too obvious that she had spent hours thinking about what to wear. In the end, she chose some dressing pants and a blazer, toning them down with a very simple strappy tank top, her loafers and simple makeup. It was undeniable: she looked amazing.
As she headed out, she sprayed on her signature perfume and got her earphones on. She was no longer a child, she didn't have her iPod anymore, but out of the earbuds and into her brain Black Sabbath sounded once again, transporting her to a different time, not exactly her years in camp, but to the countless dates that teen Olivia had imagined.
As she approached the National Theater, one of her favourite locations in the city, she panicked at the thought "How do I address the fact that we know each other? Will he remember me? Should I pretend like I have no clue who he is and just start over again? Or should I confide in him that I spent most of my teenage years having a huge crush on him?" She was however interrupted by his message letting her know he was there. She looked up and, indeed, there he was: even more handsome than she remembered. She approached him and, as with every person she was introduced to, she expected to go through the awkward moment of confusion between a handshake and her accustomed two kisses. But he just hugged her. God. He smelled amazing.
As they separated, he just asked "How have you been?" And she once again freaked out, unsure whether to act as if she was clueless about who he was.
— Oh, I've been great, I am really enjoying the city
— No, I mean, I remember you from camp
She sighed in relief. Masks off.
— Oh wow, I didn't expect you to remember me. I have actually been great.
And so their date started.
In a small, warm and cozy bar, over two glasses of beer that turned into four and then six, they talked for hours about their lives, about camp and their fond memories of it, about his music band, which she already knew about but had honestly never listened to; about her bachelors' and her love for Prague and her decision to move back after the summer for her master's; about his failed attempt to become a uni student as a rebellious young man and his settling down in his parents' business as a stonemason making restorations of historical buildings — at this point she couldn't help but stare at his hands in detail, noticing how strong and beautiful they were, his long fingers able to relentlessly carve the hardest stone and at the same time to play the softest melody on his guitar. He told her he had actually taken up the bass in the band, though he still played the guitar. She wondered if he kept the black instrument that was almost an appendix when he was younger, inseparable from him, part of his identity, of his essence.
The date went on and on for hours. Every now and then, he would go outside for a smoke and, resisting the urge to take up smoking that same moment just to get the chance to be close to him, she always refused. While he was outside, she would update her friends, who were following the encounter as if it were a football final.
Yes, it's going great.
No, we haven't kissed yet
I don't know, I literally have no clue, I mean, we have been together for hours so it is obvious he's not having a bad time but I have no idea if he is going to kiss me. I have no idea what is going to happen.
And she was not lying, she could not tell for sure what was going to happen. She did not know whether he was going to kiss her. Whether we would like to take her home. She was so nervous and all she was sure about was that she didn't want the date to end.

Kells in Prague
So, I was debating whether or not make a personal post about seeing Machine Gun Kelly in Prague. But, after actually seeing the man live, I really felt the need to document it, if not just for you guys, also for myself.
I don’t even really know how to begin... probably with before the concert when I thought I’d be going solo. That was until @echelonwonderland messaged saying I could join her and her friends, which was awesome considering I had never really been to a concert with people who were as much of a fan as I was. We met in the line at around 2pm and began a damn war of attrition (tbh the whole experience was) since there weren’t many toilets close by ( I didn’t pee for almost 10 hours...)
Rook came out to do a little bit of Candy on a barrel before the show (video to follow). He’s as adorable in person as I imagined him; not sure if that’s the look he’s going for but he really fucking is! 😂 We waited outside for 5 hours, our feet were aching, it was freezing by the time 7pm rolled around and we were really fucking bored.
But it was all worth it; by the time the doors opened and we raced inside, we got to the stage and were just one person behind the barrier. We still had 2 hours and 30 mins before the man himself came and before then, we had to be subjected to not one, but TWO supporting acts. I can’t speak for everyone but they weren’t great: the first was a DJ and she started off pretty good but I think most people just wanted Kells by this point. The second supporting act (a Czech band I can’t remember the name of) nearly gave me bloody PTSD; they were pretty heavy and screaming/rapping in Czech. I was at a disadvantage since I didn’t understand the language but I just remember thinking “holy fuck they are so angry.” 🙈 Apparently my face was a picture; this emoticon O_o would be the most accurate I’d say.
Finally the nightmare ended and it was another 30 minutes of waiting. The chanting began, the crowd were getting restless waiting for Kells and I was pretty much shitting myself to see him right in front of me and so close. 9:30 hits and the lights go down and it begins. Kells came out of the elevator like he was God himself and I’ll be honest, he may as well have been. From the moment he began to sing, he captivated everyone. Okay, well, I can’t say everyone but he captivated me. His first 5 minutes on that stage was enough for me to know I had made the right decision to go to Prague to see him live.
I’m not going to lie to you, the first couple of songs were rough; the crowd were wild and pushing and shoving and despite loving the Kells was singing, I wasn’t enjoying getting thrown about like a ragdoll. Luckily, security were really on it and everything calmed down a little. Kells and Slim both stepped in at some point to make sure the mosh pit opened up. (Slim even gave the classic kindergarten count of 1-3: “I’m going to count to three and that mosh pit is going to open up!” I would know, I’m a kindergarten teacher 😂.) After that, it was so much easier to enjoy the concert without worrying about another possible near death experience.
He played nearly everything I was hoping he would ‘Let You Go’, ‘Glass House’, ‘Waste Love’ and ‘I think I’m OKAY’. Of course he played other classics like ‘Rap Devil’ and ‘Till I die’. Everything we would expect from, in my opinion, one of the most versatile artists out there. His stage charisma was perfection and he was totally ON IT with every performance. In true MGK fashion he would pause to light a joint up and then carry on with the next song.
Perhaps one of the highlights of the night was Kells bringing a guy up onto the stage who had a sign that said “I bet I can rap Alpha Omega better than you”. And of course he wouldn’t let anyone think THAT. So they played the song for the first time on tour and to give credit to the dude, he was pretty good and certainly didn’t make a fool of himself. Good on him; I would have dropped dead if he noticed me with a sign🙈. (I have a video of this moment).
Of course I can’t forget Rook’s moment to shine with Kells taking over on drums while Rook sang “Shout at the Devil. As we all would assume, he did a great job and the crowd lovedddd it.
So I’m going fast forward to the end of the night... and the opening notes of one of my all time favourite songs; 27. I cried guys. And I’m not talking a cute couple of tears, I’m talking ugly, heaving ugly sobs crying. For the most part, it wasn’t picked up on the video but man, I was a mess. I couldn’t have imagined how good it would be live. I’m still struggling to comprehend it.
And that brings me to the conclusion of this post-turned-essay. There is so much more I could write about how amazing Kells was and how I don’t regret seeing him even for one moment. It was worth every second of the 8 hour wait, every blister on my bloody feet, ever muscle ache on my legs and back and of course, almost getting stomped to death on a couple of occasions. (And someone legit flattening me when they threw the guitar picks at the end of the show.)
If anyone is debating if they should go then I would say DO IT. You will not be disappointed. But I will say if you’re not a fan of being squashed for long periods of time, or being thrown about then maybe stay a little back out of the action because it’s tough. People were getting hauled over the barrier from nearly passing out or getting injured so be careful! Especially if you are a younger fan because lorddd your love will be tested with how crazy some people get. If you are close to the barrier then take the water the security guards offer you; it saved me. And my last piece of advice would be buy your merch BEFORE the show because it sold out and I got fuck all. I got a more permanent piece of merch so I wasn’t too upset but it was a bummer.
Yeah... this was only meant to be a couple of paragraphs but here I am writing a ridiculous amount once again. But I cannot condense this, I wanted to tell you all and try and help anyone who is on the fence about maybe trying to snatch up a ticket. It was worth every penny. Thanks to @echelonwonderland and her friend again for inviting me to join them; I know I’ve made friends for life!
E.S.T for life!! ❤️

Music questionnaire/tag game
@centaine tagged basically anyone/everyone and why not? I know I’ve done this several years ago (or at least something similar), so gonna try to throw in some more recent loves. And not do it in any kind of order to maybe shake things up in the questions… and you know what, I had a bit of a hard time thinking of bands/artists I really like right now, so threw in some composers.
Also, after answering what I copied form Samy I noticed that I never answered anything for 4, so I googled and found a longer version, including the same questions I answered + more. So I added those where they are in the other versions I found!
Music Questionnaire
List 10 artists you like before answering the questions below.
Josh Groban Ruelle PTX Bear McCreary Hozier Bruce Springsteen First Aid Kit Superfruit Hans Zimmer Tom Waits
What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
Absolutely no clue. Cause I was a kid. What I do vividly remember is lying on the floor in the living room, listening to the Born in the USA LP.
What is your favourite song of 8?
I think the choir remix of Future Friends. Closely followed by GUY.exe
What kind of impact has 1 left on your life?
Not sure. One of the very few I’ve seen in concert, and twice. And I guess that has opened my eyes to what concerts can be like with popular artists and how they don’t have to be like maybe I once thought? And I guess helping me stay in contact with one of my classmates, through shared appreciation for his music (she’s pretty much a hardcore fan. I’m a more casual one)
What are your favorite lyrics of 5?
That is… super hard. I love his creepy romantic stuff, so lets go with:
And they'd find us in a week When the cattle'd show fear After the insects have made their claim After the foxes have known our taste I'd be home with you, I'd be home with you
How many times have you seen 2 live?
None. Don’t know if I care to tbh.
What is your favourite song by 7? (need to mention that I haven’t listened to their latest album yet due to being too deeply into other music. But I will eventually. Just saying that those songs were not included when considering this)
Maybe Emmylou? Or This Old Routine, or Wolf. I also really love their covers of Red Dirt Girl and Universal Soldier.
Is there any song by 3 that makes you sad?
Just the other day Standing By made me cry sooooo. But in general no, their music doesn’t make me sad. Standing By is a beautiful song that in itself shouldn’t make me too sad, but I just remember the stuff from the documentary, and then everything with Avi. And it also makes me think of my gf now cause it’s a perfect long distance relationship song.
What is your favourite song by 9?
It depends a bit on my mood. Time is great (and omfg that Scott Hoying and Mario José cover of Lost On You combined with Time… what a brilliant idea), but no wait… Duduk of the North has to be it. It’s one of my favourite pieces of music ever. And pretty much everything else from Gladiator really.
When did you first get into 2?
Aha! Easy question for once. It’s all due to Shadowhunters, so it was last fall.
How did you get into 3?
I am such a newbie pentaholic, but I got in deep once I properly tried. See, I don’t really know why I resisted so many years. I love musicals, and I’ve realised part of that is cause I really like duets and choirs and stuff (and stories but that doesn’t have anything to do with PTX). But there was something with the whole a cappella group thing that just didn’t work for me, I thought. And tbh I think a big part was also the beatboxing thing, cause I generally find beatboxing kinda cringy? Also Scott is a bit too much when you’re not used to it with all the riffing and running. I’m not a big fan of that in general. Aaaanyway. I never properly tried even if I knew of them of course. I think the first thing I heard/watched was Radioactive back in the day, which I think introduced me to Lindsey Stirling as well, whom I have listened way more to. So anyway, a few months ago (I said newbie did I?) I was watching GMM, which I have been a fan of for many years, and used to watch every single ep of but haven’t with the new format. But Duo or Don’t-o style stuff is always fun, so definitely gonna watch that. I did recognise the guests, at least Scott, and made the PTX connection (probably not Mitch tbh considering how much he changes all the time). I thought they seemed really fun and cute and everything and knew I had to watch some Superfruit stuff on youtube. Well I fell in love right away, and watched everything, and listening to Future Friends. But somewhere along the way of that massive binge (we’re just talking like a week of inhaling everything) I thought I really should give PTX a good and proper try. First I put a few songs on a Spotify playlist and played at work. Then I expanded a bit. And then I just went into a full soundbath that included all their music, minus classic christmas songs (cause we were past the holiday season). And I do mean listening to their stuff pretty much non-stop for 24-48 hours. Okay did stop for sleep. And it worked. I realised that the beatboxing wasn’t cringy at all cause Kevin isn’t human and you can’t even tell (I listen to the mashup from Bones, with the somewhat subpar beatboxing and… yeah still a lil bit cringy tbh, but not as much as it used to be cause I am used to the art form) and I got used to all the running. Ask me my favourite band now and… tbh I will probably say PTX.
What is your favourite song by 4?
It will have to be something from BSG for sure (I do love the Outlander score too though, and other stuff he’s done, but BSG will always be my favourite). Violence and Variations, Goodbye Sam, or Roslin and Adama probably. The last one there is what I think is the reason I finally watched the show. See, I had tried twice and never even got through the mini series. A friend sent me that song (I think) saying that she knew I don’t watch the show, but that I appreciate a good score and knowing I love Gladiator I might really like the music from BSG. And I was like sure, why not. Give me some nice sweeping score! And she was right, I did really like it. And the timing was just right. I must’ve been ready for a new sci fi show, and the music made me open up to it again. I skipped the first half of the mini cause I remembered it well enough and started with the second half, which I guess got me past that first speed bump, and oh boy and I glad I gave it a third try. One of the best tv series I’ve ever watched. And excellent score. Bear McCreary is for sure one of my favourite composers. How many times have you seen 9 live?
Never. How often does Hans Zimmer do live stuff though? Wait didn’t I see some kind of recorded live thing with him somewhere? Netflix maybe? I should watch that. I have heard some of his stuff performed by a symphonic orchestra in Prague though! Not a pure Hans Zimmer show by any means, but I finally got the Gladiator Suite live. What is a good memory concerning 10?
I don’t have a specific memory tied to Tom Waits I think. Skip to the last question for one story about getting into his music as an adult, which I guess is a good memory. But in general his music just reminds me of my dad. Which is also nice. Is there a song by 8 that makes you sad?
Haha both the sad questions are for very closely related artists… anyways, not really? Cause even the properly sad songs like Deny U and Goodbye From Lonely have some kind of energy that just makes them… less sad. Now, if they would do some kind of like outdoor acoustic thing like artists tend to do for some reason (hey boys, look at kirstin and do the same!) I’m sure they would become way more sad. Tbh I’d really like that. We got a taste of Goodbye From Lonely from someone’s cute party (who was it? Damn, I can’t remember. One of their friends anyway. Wait, was it Luke?) where they did it acoustic, and what I heard was beautiful. What is your favourite song of 1? I can’t say Gold Can Turn To Sand right? Simply cause I adore the original xD Cause it isn’t really my favourite when just looking at his stuff I guess. Hmmm, you know what comes to mind? Vincent (Starry Starry Night), that one is beautiful. Actually a lot of the songs from his debut album are among my favourites. Like Let Me Fall or You’re Still You. Like the big sweeping ballads.
How did you get into 10?
Dad. The end. No but I grew up with the music of Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton… assorted blues as well. Many years ago I think one of his songs played in something on tv, maybe even a cover. I feel like it might’ve been I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You? Or someone used lyrics for something on LJ maybe? I don’t know. Anyway, I felt like I recognised the song and liked it. And I looked up which album it was on (his debut album from 1973 in fact) and assuming dad had it, went to find it in the living room (cause I was right). Put it on in the kitchen while doing something, and realised I knew all the songs on the album. I had never listened to it actively. But it must’ve played so many times during my childhood. And I thought “damn, this is good”. And it still is. I think that album will always give me a cozy safe feeling.
Tagging: uuuh, whoever feels like doing it. @kimmyhunter you said you had some tag games to do, have another! the rest of you... do it too!

Berlin to Budapest.
Tumblr media
If like me you have the travel bug, but equally prefer travelling alone, I couldn’t recommend Contiki more! They are a travel company for 18-35 year olds and they go (almost) everywhere. Every trip is an adventure and the people you meet along the way make every moment worth the long flights and sleepless nights.
This is my third time travelling with Contiki (my 4th is already booked! Bring on January!) and as the title suggests, we went from Berlin through Prague, onto Krakow and finished in Budapest. I had a wonderful time and many delicious meals, starting with Berlin Street food!
During the Second World War a woman called Herta Heuwer would approach US soldiers and swap liquor for ketchup and curry powder. She would combine these together, pour it on top of a sausage and you had Currywurst (pronounced curry vurst)!
Still a traditional street dish in Berlin you can find the kiosks EVERYWHERE. So of course I decided to try this special meal.
In all honesty, I did not know what to expect, I had been to Germany before and was still on the fence about the cuisine, that coupled with the idea of curry powder and ketchup did not fill me with joy.
Nonetheless we queued and paid, I went for Currywurst with chips (fries) and a drink, so if it was inedible I at least had something to last me until dinner.
In our group, we were also surprised to see that the kiosk offered vegan and vegetarian Currywursts so for all you none-meat eaters you too can enjoy this dish.
And enjoy it we did, the first taste to hit you was the sweetness of the ketchup, followed closely by the warmth of the curry powder. Of course you could taste the sausage too which added to the pleasure of this street dish. There’s something unique and indescribable about German sausages but I couldn’t imagine enjoying a Currywurst without one.
Since the dawn of the 20th century, Germany has gone through two world wars, the Nazis, the Soviets and five currencies. It is now one of (if not) the strongest economies in the EU and its capital is a diverse city that boasts being one of the safest cities for solo travel, a hub for street art, nightlife and reinvention. Nothing quite sums up all that history like this eclectic street dish, so should you have the pleasure of being in Berlin I can’t recommend Currywurst enough.
The adventure didn’t stop there, almost as soon as we arrived in Berlin it was off to Prague, which was certainly one of the most beautiful cities on this trip, but one of the biggest highlights for me (of course!) was the food.
We had the joy of attending a restaurant called Michal’s, (organised by Contiki) to enjoy a traditional Czech meal in the heart of this stunning city.
We began the meal with bread, soup and a garlic butter, the butter itself merits an entire blog post, it had the texture of cream cheese, the taste of butter and just the right amount of garlic.
For me, the soup was the real standout of the meal, I will go out on a limb and say, there is nothing more special in east Europe then their soups. Light, rich and full of big chunky vegetables and meats these soups are the cure to your worst break up, hardest heart ache and the most dismal of dismal days. We do not have the equivalent in England and it breaks my heart a little every time I eat Heinz Canned Tomato Soup (which gets far to much glory in the UK).
I could’ve easily eaten ten bowls of the beef soup but I was promptly presented with a platter of meat and potatoes. Again another triumph, so tender it fell apart on the journey from platter to my plate.
Czech cuisine is not for everyone and is rich and heavy to the extreme, but for me it is the sort of comfort food to make your soul sing and to bring all kinds of people together.
The restaurant certainly succeeded in bringing our tour group all together, a band played traditional music while two people danced. Of course there was some audience participation from inhaling enough water through a plastic sword to fill three wine glasses (my personal sucking skills won me a small bottle of liquor) and the dancers selecting some of our group to get up and dance.
Overall a joyous evening, full of food, laughter and copious amounts of wine.
A must do if you’re in Prague.
We waved Prague goodbye and zoomed off to Krakow (well, not quite “zoomed”, one cannot simply “zoom” in a coach containing 31 passengers and their luggage).
Sadly we were greeted by torrential rain which put quite the dampener on our first day and the chocolate box Old Town Square, but! In the spirit of making the best of a bad situation we persisted with a bicycle tour (which was rescheduled to the next day) and wondering the Cloth Hall, now a tourist market hall featuring the finest souvenirs this side of Poland, and generally getting rather soggy.
After drying our toes, Contiki had organised another restaurant extravaganza, this time at Kogel Mogel, rated highly by Michelin and known for their Perogis, we were given the chance to experience fine food and a cooking lesson.
Of course we started the meal with the aforementioned Perogis, almost anything can go in these traditional dumplings, usually they are filled with potatoes, meat or cheese (my personal favourite is red cabbage). The dumplings KM served us were a selection of potato and cheese, deer and pork.
Perogis always baffle my brain a little. While in your mouth the dough feels thick and heavy but the filling is often light and fluffy. You anticipate bloating and stomach ache but instead feel warm and satisfied.
The restaurant was kind enough to show us how to make Perogis and to let us have a go. The recipe and execution was simple enough so we gave it a go, needless to say I was hopeless but I got better, as with most Eastern European food, the key seems to be a caring hand and lots of love, a skill I can utilise when eating Perogis, not so much when making them.
After marvelling at our peers Perogi talent we returned to the table for our main course which was delicious but the standard meat and potatoes.
Now back to the Perogis, we had another dish of desert Perogis which I am ashamed to say I did not enjoy, for the simple reason they were stuffed with plums, a fruit I find so disgusting I am offended at its very presence on my plate.
However this has given me a vocation, I am now on the hunt for more sweet Perogi flavours to try.
Alongside the plums we had a dish that seemed to be like a Creme Brûlée but was not, this compote like desert, was extremely sweet and just hit the desert spot I had been craving since Berlin.
If you ever find yourself in Krakow it would be plain old bad manners to dine anywhere else but KM.
Our last stop on this epic adventure was Budapest. Technically three cities, Buda, Old Buda and Pest (pronounced Peshed) this was our sweetest stop on the trip, which was an ideal ending for me, as a large woman with an even larger sweet tooth I was certainly missing the sweet treats I love to indulge in at home.
Introducing Ruszwurm, a gorgeous confectioners established in 1827 and still going strong today, you can find this little gem on the Buda side of the city, within spitting distance of the Fisherman’s Bastion.
My first tip would be to go in a small group. I decided to go on a day the rest of the group was going to the famous Budapest Baths, another must do, so I was able to find a seat easily.
I was absolutely desperate to try the famous Ruszwurm Vanilla Kreme, a cake that is 90% cream, sandwiched between two thin biscuit/cake layers.
As soon as it arrived I regretted coming to the confectioner alone. It was large and thick and I didn’t think I was going to be able to finish one alone.
How wrong I was! This cake is the most delicious cake I have ever had the joy to taste, it has already had a reoccurring role in my dreams and I went back the next day with a few of my Contiki friends for another slice of this devilish Kreme.
Like Perogis, this cake will mess with your mind a little. It is able to stand securely with a solid thick looking cream centre and the biscuit like pieces, provide a strong hard looking foundation for the cream to sit on, but once on the lips, the cream melts into a light, perfectly sweet, whipped vanilla taste that makes me weak at the knees, the matching wafers crumble and crunch providing an excellent contrast to this sweetest of sweet treats.
This Vanilla Kreme was clearly made by a man who sold his soul to the devil and I thank god we cannot find this cake in London otherwise, within a week, I’d be bleeding cream.
If you take nothing else from this post, you must go to Ruszwurm when in Budapest.
Honourable mention:
Beetroot Soup- a delicacy in Poland that also contains little meat Perogis. This vibrantly coloured soup has a mild pickle taste that I deeply enjoy and with the accompanying Perogis is a must have lunch dish.
Central Market Hall- located on the Pest side of Budapest, this old market hall plays host to excellent street food and souvenir stands alike, an excellent stopping point for food and presents (for all the haters at home who wish they were in a city like Budapest). The “must have” street food is Langos, essentially fried bread with sour cream and cheese (most places will allow you to add various other toppings as well). Goulash is also a popular choice in Hungary and makes for a convenient lunch. Neither of these meals are a Burger Queen approved “must” I found Langos too doughy for my taste and strikes me as a pretentious pizza (not quite why I travelled all the way across Europe.) and goulash has nothing on my favourite Polish or Romanian soups.
For me, the must have is Cabbage Rolls, a dish I had the delight of eating when I worked with some fantastic Romanian women and went to Bucharest. It is the must eat meal of choice in the iconic Central Market Hall. You are served a huge portion with a side of additional cabbage. The “roll” is pork and rice (vegetarian options available) wrapped in pickled cabbage I love them so much I would marry them if I could.
Needless to say Romania and Hungary share a border and a close history so the Cabbage Rolls are (almost) as good as Romania.
