Chapter 1
“All cats old enough to catch their own prey gather below High Point!”
Speckledkit excitedly bounded out of the nursery, before being yanked back by her tail. “Speckledkit, you must be patient.”
“Sorry Auntie Riverback…” The young molly looked up at her aunt with lowered ears. “I was just excited to become an apprentice!”
“W-Wait up!” The two mollies looked behind them to the nursery, where the sleepy figure of a brown tom kit stumbled out. “Speckledkit, you promised you’d wait for me!” Speckledkit giggled a little, hurrying over to meet him. “Well maybe you shouldn’t have slept in! Honestly Briarkit, you’d probably have slept through the whole apprentice ceremony.” The two kits began to bicker playfully, following Riverback to the clan meeting. There they were met by their denmates, Springkit and Rustkit.
“Took you two long enough! Any longer and we’d be elders!” Springkit mewed, flicking his tail to boop the others on the nose.
“Says the one who raced out of the nursery so fast he tripped on his own feet.” Rustkit mumbled, sleepily rubbing her eyes.
“-And to celebrate, Marshclan will be welcoming four new apprentices!”
The four kits snapped to attention as Sprucestar finished her small speech, the large leader looking down at her clan from the top of High Point. “Rustkit, Springkit, and Speckledkit, please step forwards.” Speckledkit gulped a little, suddenly filled with nerves before stepping forwards to look at her aunt. “As you three have grown to six moons, and to relieve the poor queens of a crowded nursery,” She teased, clearly trying to ease the kits' nerves, “It is time for you to become apprentices. Rustkit, from this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Rustpaw. Your mentor will be Coppereye, I hope she will pass all she knows on to you.” Coppereye, seemingly startled to be receiving an apprentice, stepped forwards to meet Rustpaw.
“Coppereye, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have shown yourself to be brave and cunning. You will be Rustpaw’s mentor, and I expect you to pass on all you know to her.” The clan cheered for Rustpaw as she and Coppereye touched noses and sat at the edge of the crowd.
“Springkit, from this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Springpaw. Your mentor will be Redwind, and I hope he shares all he knows with you.” Redwind stepped forward slowly, shaking his head a little before smiling.
“Redwind, you are ready to take another apprentice, and you have shown endless patience. You will be the mentor of Springpaw, and I expect you to pass on all you know to him.”
“Thank you Sprucestar, ancestors know I’ll need that patience.” The ginger tom teased, leaning down to touch noses with Springpaw, leading the excitable tom to the edge alongside Coppereye.
“And Speckledkit, from this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Speckledpaw. Your mentor will be Palepelt. I hope she teaches you well.” Sprucestar purred slightly, looking to Palepelt as the white molly approached.
“Palepelt, you are more than ready to receive an apprentice. You are an amazing hunter and negotiator. You will be Speckledpaw’s mentor, and I expect you to pass all you know on to her.” Palepelt nodded sagely, gently touching noses to her new apprentice, then following to sit with the other new mentors.
“Briarkit, please step forwards.” Sprucestar adjusted herself, becoming serious as Elderbark joined her on High Point, the old molly clearly struggling with the climb. Briarkit glanced back to his mother, but Riverback simply nudged him forwards. Elderbark cleared her throat. “Briarkit, I have taken the time to consider your wish to become a medicine cat, and I approve.” The brown tom’s eyes shot open, suddenly full of joy. Sprucestar spoke next.
“Briarkit, from this day on, until you receive your full name, you will be known as Briarpaw. You will join Elderbark and Leafpaw in the medicine den. May our ancestors guide your paws and lead you through the path of healing.” The black and white molly nodded slightly, before hopping down from High Point to join the celebration. Cheers erupted from the whole clan as they began to honor the acceptance of four new apprentices to the clan.
Speckledpaw looked up at her mentor. “What now?” She flicked her ear a little, suddenly realizing she had no idea what an apprentice actually did.
“For now, celebrate with your family, and rest. Tonight we will make your first journey to Mother-root.” Palepelt’s voice was soothing to hear, as the warrior looked down at the young apprentice. “And then your training proper begins tomorrow.” Speckledpaw nodded, gently bumping her mentor with her head before hurrying to find her aunt and cousin. She tumbled her way through her clanmates, looking around to see if she could spot them. Just barely peeking over the heads of the other cats, she could make out the tufted ears of her uncle. She bounded over cheerfully.
“Uncle Snailpatch! Uncle Snailpatch!” The black and white molly practically bowled the large brown tom over, causing him to let out a shout of surprise.
“Woah! Careful there Speckledpaw, you almost knocked me over! Are you already a warrior?” He teased, bumping her gently. “I’m so proud of you…”
“Sorry Uncle Snailpatch, I’m just excited! I’m gonna get to be a warrior!” She wiggled slightly, barely able to keep on her paws. “Do… Do ya think Grandpa is feeling ok enough that I could visit and tell him?” Her voice dropped a little in volume. Woolpelt, her grandfather, had been struck by a nasty case of Greencough only the moon prior, and no one was sure if the elder would make it.
“Well, we could always ask Elderbark. I was headed there anyways to see if she already started training Briarpaw.” Snailpatch started walking towards the fallen tree that held the medicine den’s entrance, Speckledpaw trailing close behind. “You know, it still feels like only yesterday all of you were tiny little kits… Briarpaw could nearly fit in my paw.”
As the two cats neared the gnarled, hollow tree, they were greeted by the greying face of their medicine cat. The elderly black and white, though it seemed she was slowly becoming grey and white with every passing moon, molly looked them over quietly. “You don't look hurt, so why are you here?”
“Oh we-” “I wanted to know if Grandpa was feeling better enough so I could tell him I’m an apprentice now!” Speckledpaw interrupted her uncle, feeling nervous under the steely gaze of the blue-eyed cat. Once again receiving a once over, even Snailpatch seemed to shift in discomfort. “I took him back to the Elder’s den this morning. He’s recovered, but you better not rile him up or I’ll have your pelts, understood?”
“Y-yes Ma’am!” Both cats nodded, quickly turning for the tunnels that lead to the Elder’s den as Elderbark padded out of camp, presumably to gather herbs.
Speckledpaw visibly relaxed as she felt the familiar moss flooring of the den, and saw Woolpelt quietly chatting with Mudfur, the other elder currently in the clan. “Grandpa! Mister Mudfur! Guess what!” She bounded in, grabbing the attention of the two toms.
“Speckledkit! My wonderful granddaughter, how are you?” Woolpelt grinned warmly at the apprentice, shifting to sit up. “Come to hear a story?”
“No grandpa, I came to tell you I’m an apprentice now! A real warrior apprentice!” She puffed up with pride.
“Well now that can’t be right. Last time I checked you were still only two moons old.” The elder teased, earning a slight eye roll and chuckle from his den-mate. “Has Sprucestar made you an apprentice so young? My little daughter forgetting how old her own niece is! How tragic!” He played up the drama, pressing his remaining foreleg against his head, leaning back both for dramatic effect, and to keep his balance.
“Noooo Grandpa! I am six moons old! Auntie didn’t forget!” The apprentice squealed, giggling.
“Goodness gracious you’ve grown up so fast then!” Woolpelt plonked back down, nuzzling his granddaughter as he purred. “I’ll blink and next thing I know you’ll be a grown warrior and I’ll be a Great-Grandpa!” Speckledpaw made a slight face at the statement, sticking her tongue out.
“Ewwww! No, the boys are stinky!” She squealed, putting her paws on her grandfather’s face. “I wanna be like Auntie Sprucestar! She doesn’t have kits!”
The elder let out a slight chuckle. “Ah, you sound just like her at your age. She was also quite adamant about it.” “Really?” Speckledpaw’s eyes lit up. “Just like Auntie?”
“Oh, yes, quite a bit.” He gently tapped a paw to her nose. “I suppose I could tell you more if you want. Or is this apprentice too old for an old tom’s stories now?”
“No! No! I wanna hear the stories! Please Grandpa! I wanna hear them! I have time! Right Uncle Snailpatch?” She turned to the entrance of the den, only to realize her uncle had left a while ago. “Oops…”
“Well, why don’t you get comfortable. I have quite the stories to tell.” Woolpelt shifted to the side, making room in his nest.
The sky had grown dark without any of the three cats in the warm den noticing, each enjoying stories of the past. In fact, they didn’t even notice the slim figure of Palepelt until she cleared her throat. “I hope I’m not intruding Woolpelt, but I do in fact, need to take my apprentice to Mother-Root now.”
“Mother-Root! Right!” Speckledpaw shot up from her spot next to her grandfather, nearly knocking the tom over. “oops. Sorry Grandpa!” She brushed her cheek against his gently as he chuckled.
“Go on, and remember to be respectful!” Woolpelt called after his kin as she bounded out with her mentor. Speckledpaw took a glance back to see the two elders settle back down into their nests for the night. The white-speckled molly looked up at her mentor, who practically glided across the ground as she walked.
It didn’t take long for the two she-cats to reach the edge of camp, where her cousin, Rustpaw, and their mentors waited. Springpaw was animatedly pestering Redwind with questions that the older tom seemed to be answering calmly. As Palepelt approached, he looked up and his eyes lit up, the same way Snailpatch’s did when he looked at Riverback, Speckledpaw noticed. Gross. The apprentice struggled to not make a noticeable face while the mentors greeted each other quietly.
“Took ya long enough! We were thinking about leaving without you!” “We were Not.” “Ow!” Rustpaw had shoved Springpaw in the shoulder, causing him to nearly topple over his own limbs. Speckledpaw giggled a little at how much her cousin was playing it up.
“‘Paws. You best get it all out before we go. Horseplay doesn’t belong near Mother-Root.” Coppereye padded over to the three, thick tail flicking. The three apprentices quickly stood up straight, trying to not look Coppereye directly in the empty socket. The cream molly looked over at all three of them and turned to the river crossing. “Come on. Don’t keep us waiting.”
As the other two quickly joined the older cats, Speckledpaw hesitated, finding her paws getting heavier and heavier as she got closer to the riverbank that made up the exterior of camp. She wouldn’t have to touch it. Just go across the stones. It won’t be that difficult. She’d hopped across plenty of stones before. So why wouldn’t her paws move. “Speckledpaw?”
The soft voice of her mentor shot her out of her haze with a jolt. The white-furred face of Palepelt was close to hers, a hint of concern in her eyes. “Are you alright? You froze up.” Her long tail gently draped over her apprentices shoulders, nodding for the others to head across without them.
“I-I’m.... I’m fine! Just uh… just excited to see Mother-Root! Yeah…” Speckledpaw shook her head slightly, trying to keep her voice from cracking. “We should go, right?” She forced a smile onto her face, headed over to the stones, looking anywhere but the cold water of the river. “Right… be careful crossing the rocks, I don’t want to have an impromptu lesson on swimming, alright?”
The two cats crossed, joining the others as Speckledpaw tried to ignore the chills the wet rocks gave her. “Coppereye, would you like to lead the way? Since this is your first time mentoring. Well, mentoring an actual apprentice.” Redwind teased his fellow warrior lightly, smiling at the quiet huff of the molly. “Very well. Follow me and keep up.” Coppereye started off, with Rustpaw close at her heels. The others quickly followed, Springpaw, then Redwind, and then Palepelt and Speckledpaw, the mentor wanting to stay close to her apprentice.

welcome to WyrmClan!
Living in the tunnels of a huge mountain are these tenacious and smart cats.
Our leader:
Curlystar wasn't the cat who started the clan: that honour belongs to Flipstar, who gave Curlyclaw her new name: Curlystar, giving her the gift of leadership through the darkest times. She'll need it, the Clan is currently in the grip of a famine, with only two warriors, the Clan is barely skating through. She's determined to lead her Clan safely out through the other side of this famine.
Our deputy:
Owlspeckle was born and bred in WyrmClan, and she knows the danger the Clan is currently in. Desperate to prove herself to Curlystar, and to herself, she's quietly plotting her next move.
Our cleric:
Asternettle is worried about how the Clan is going to pull through this famine, but she has faith that StarClan will help them. How? She's not quite sure, but she remains hopeful.
Warriors:
Briarears was desperate to become deputy, but he's begrudgingly accepted that until Curlystar's death, he'll be allocated to the role of helpful senior warrior. He's jealous of Owlspeckle's status as deputy, and is already plotting to get on her good side should she *mysteriously* become a leader overnight.
Ramblingpatch is uncertain about her role in the Clan, and is slightly suspicious of Briarears. The way he talks about Curlystar puts her on edge. However, she's pushed her fears to the side for the sake of her apprentice, who she's already very close to.
Apprentices:
Minkpaw is keenly aware of the shambling status of her Clan. Close friends with both Ramblingpatch and Fallenpaw, she gets all the gossip. Regardless, she's determined to protect her Clan to the best of her ability.
Fallenpaw is a bit more relaxed. He doesn't mind what pronouns get used for zem, or how close Ramblingpatch and Asternettle are. They're very close to Minkpaw, and know how easily she gets passionate about something. Sometimes, she feeds Minkpaw fake gossip, just for fun.
Kits:
Boragekit's parents died when his was very young: his mother of blood loss after giving birth, and his father of starvation after giving his prey to Boragekit. He doesn't remember his father very well, just that he was very kind, and had very soft fur. He's mostly being raised by Ramblingpatch and Asternettle at the moment.
That's WyrmClan! I'll probably make posts every 12 moons, or longer if nothing happens! :]
