Mostly spoiler free summary of my viewing experience
#The boy and the heron#how do you live#studio ghibli#ghibli#in all honesty that movie was legitimately so fantastic and im like changed as a person#Story wise as well! It hits really hard if you know a bit about miyazaki and his legacy. Its a very personal movie i think#And you can feel it in every aspect#The eng dub voice actors were really good as well and the animation was beautiful as always#Also really loved the tone!!! The story really relied a bit on the use of negative space in both sound and pacing and i enjoyed that alot#in conclusion go read a article about miyazaki and his son and then go watch the movie it’s probably going to be one of my favorites#image id in alt

i’m so sorry but if you’re in the ‘fantasy media is escapism I don’t want to think about any REAL world problems‘ crowd then why are you posting about the witcher. there are few fantasy sagas that are quite so explicit and intentional as the Witcher when mirroring its characters, world, and conflict around real people, politics, and everyday struggles. also that’s why it’s GOOD
#this is not about netlix I don’t watch the show n I don’t care abt it#don’t worry im not really vaguing anyone on here it’s just stuff I read online and in articles and social media in general#tires me out and also makes me sad for the long and important legacy of fantasy authors and creators doing their best to#translate and break down their reality into a fantastical setting :(#like don’t do sapkowski like this he worked hard to make this real#the witcher#the witcher books#double shot

"Now some of you might want to know whether demons still exist in the Elysium world in some way or form, I’m going to leave it hanging)." (x) okay well what is this then
Joyce Messier - "*A Deuill*," she pronounces: "*Who being of great Charme and Guille, sneaketh into the homes of the Godlie*." Conceptualization - That dialect is Ubi Sunt?. You recognize the quote from somewhere. A play, written way back in the Franconigerian century... Electrochemistry - Beneath her waterproof raincoat and silk shirt is a body imbibed in Numb 12 perfume. You are suddenly and intimately aware of it. You - "*And perswades them to addict themselues to his seruice...*" Joyce Messier - "Ah, you know more than you let on..." She gives you a coy little smile. "Philosopher-Detective of Precinct 41." You - (Nod.) "Devil Woman."
Harry is quoting from Daemonologie by King James VI (x)
Daemonologie [..]was first published in 1597[1] by King James VI of Scotland (later also James I of England) as a philosophical dissertation on contemporary necromancy and the historical relationships between the various methods of divination used from ancient black magic. [..] Daemonologie included a study of demonology and the methods demons used to bother troubled men. The book endorses the practice of witch hunting. This book is believed to be one of the main sources used by William Shakespeare in the production of Macbeth. (x)
the funniest thing is that I couldn't find Joyce's quote in Daemonologie. The sentence before Harry's quote is this:
Their mindes being prepared before hand, as I haue alreadie spoken, they easelie agreed vnto that demande of his: And syne settes an other tryist, where they may meete againe. At which time, before he proceede any further with them, he first perswades them to addict themselues to his seruice:
The only place I found that exact quote, was an article about Tony Blair, (published in 2014) (x), where he is described as some ancient evil demon. (it's pretty funny)
I think it's interesting how "Devil Woman" is mostly mentioned when there is something that reminds Harry of his ex
Joyce's perfume, which is "Sweet like the scent of chewing gum on some letter, long ago..."
Klaasje (blond young woman in disco era clothes, has birthmarks on her face - Dora had freckles)
Man from Hjelmdall and the Devil Woman book
another smell that is related to Dora is cinnamon
Apricot Chewing Gum Wrapper - There it is again -- the scent of apricots, with a touch of cinnamon. Smells like the end of some distant summer. The surface of another planet, or some ancient temple.
From Sacred and Terrible Air:
(..)was whispered into Fakkengaff’s ear by the very soul of debauchery. She had the white wings of an angel, but the breath against the disc jockey’s ear had been hot with passion, smelling of cinnamon and primal evil.
^ again with the evil thing (and aren't demons fallen angels?)
Daemonologie was written to endorse witch hunting and through the game there are times where Harry can say some pretty sexist stuff about women (calling them whores and devil women) so it's fitting
so. don't know where I'm going with this but pretty interesting stuff
#correct me if im wrong. is there a source for the first quote anywhere else#de meta#disco elysium#*taking notes* Shakespeare exists in elyium *goes to my pepe sylvia board* strangely fitting tony blair article. demon women? dolores dei?#I have a really hard time reading old english so there isnt much i can say about it

rape is just a thing that may happen during war. we're not saying it didn't happen. it may have occurred. rape is not uncommon in war. it's not a weapon of war, there's no proof it's a pattern of violence against women, it's just something that happens for some reason.
#rape tw#i swear i'm now done talking about this fucking article now that i've worked myself up and can't sleep#completely disingenuous dripping with smugness and written by three fucking males#and some of you gobbled this right up#which is the part i'm most angry abt even though i shouldn't be bc i know radblr is full of ideologues#and i know i'm guilty of buying into twitter threads without reading the article#but it should really really really not be hard not to dismiss rape claims#if your first thought is ''oh phew i was worried i would have to condemn my side's actions'' then you have also bought into a narrative#ironically just as this article claims#but i shouldn't be surprised bc i see blatant antisemitic rhetoric disguised as anti-zionism here on the reg#so why not handwave rape as well#i just hate dogma. i hate dogma that creates acceptable victims.#i'm not going to leap to the defense of radicalized + militarized males. idc who they are.#bc it's all of them

i'm very interested what ppl find to be the harder shakespeare plays and which they found to be easier. bc i was googling out of curiosity and i found a sparknotes article (link if you're curious) that ranked ten of the most commonly-read plays on difficulty and it put king lear kinda down low whereas it put julius caesar pretty high because of the politics/complicated conflicts. that kind of baffled me because julius caesar was the first tragedy i read outside of the classroom and i found it very approachable; it's one i often recommend to people trying to get into shakespeare because the plot is already familiar to most ppl and you can just enjoy the poetry and how shakespeare chooses to characterize these figures. on the other hand i read king lear a few years later in my shakespeare journey, and to be honest i still kind of have a hard time with lear. maybe i just don't connect with it on some level; i'm not sure. it's not a very tightly-organized play where the action is as centered as in the other tragedies like hamlet or macbeth. that's certainly a me thing and maybe that'll change with age. but i'm always a little surprised when i find someone's experience with the plays so much different than mine.
anyway if you're reading this feel free to reblog and tag or comment which shakespeare plays you found yourself falling into most naturally and which worlds you felt like you had to force yourself into. i'm interested in what ppl feel on this subject
#i also had a hard time w love's labor's lost for comedies. idk i just didn't connect w any of the characters tho the premise is interesting#on my inexplicable third hand: once i primed myself w the historical context to get into the wars of the roses plays i found them addictive#which is funny bc before i read them i kinda NEVER thought i'd get around to the histories#bunch of dead kings i had never heard of. i was like what care is that to me?#text post#shakespeare#king lear#julius caesar#sparknotes#that article rated cymbeline as the most difficult if you were wondering. which i think is an interesting choice#bc it's not really one of the top 10 you're most likely to be presented with#i LOVED cymbeline but it was like. the 30th play i had read. something like that lol#so clearly i was quite used to shakespeare by the time i read it. i wasn't someone who needed to psyched up to read him#(although even i can have a hard time w shakespeare still... and i have only 3 plays left once i finish this last scene in m4m)#i can't say it's a good play for a beginner to start with at all. for many reasons. but cymbeline is a great play.#a midsummer night's dream was also very easy to get into and that was the first one i read on my own#isn't it one of everyone's firsts? it's magnificent i mean. it's unmatched#and it's also one of the shortest and easiest to understand with some of the most lovely lyrical poetry#troilus and cressida was hard and i don't particularly like that one... waiting to change my mind#both t&c and love's labor's are ones i only read once and never watched in any form#so maybe i should give them another shot#i HAVE given lear a couple of other shots and i still find it kind of impenetrable to be honest#it's not that i don't understand the surface level. but i can't. idk. i can't feel much about it#by shakespeare standards

So Allegedly Infinite Wealth is 100 hours... not that you can't already spend that long on the games if you really want to, but I'd say it's the first time that could be said to be the base experience rather than a time only hardcore completionists are likely to get.
Yokoyama was talking at length about wanting to make the game worth the price tag since the team is incredibly conscious about the value of the players' time and money. They essentially feel they owe players ten times what they paid, so they're aiming for "an enjoyable 100 hours, but also an unforgettable 100 hours."
If they pull it off, I personally think it'd be 100% worth it and not just a "well other studios are doing it so we can get away with it too" price hike... I'm at least happy to know that's not the intent, and I'm intrigued to see how everything pans out and what the ratio is between story and side content
oh yayaya i saw that article this morning!!! 100 hours is actually so unfathomable to me in terms of an rgg game- i mean y7 was At Minimum around 45~50 hours but when i think of other RPGS that easily dip into 70's and 100's of hours, i'm not too surprised to see LAD start to climb towards those numbers now. it'd be such a jump in rgg's terms tho, so i'm TRULY curious to see where the nearly doubled gameplay hours comes from..
i really appreciate yoko's respect not just to RGGS but also to its customers: they want to make a great product, but they also don't want to sacrifice what they want to do to do that in the process
#snap chats#very timely article since .. i think it was passport i dont exactly remember who it was that was concerned about the game quality#maybe it was kana... idk one of you lot LMAO POINT IS thank you for reading our minds yoko#i wouldnt mind 100+ hours of island content LMAO but fr im truly curious to see what the main plot's gon be bout then#i mean we KNOW the main plot but yk what i mean... how the hell does this pan out..#REGARDLESS. i never had any issue with the LAD8 price#maybe its just cause i dont buy videogames too much <- liar (theyre old so like .2% cheaper its ok i think)#in rgg's case i always know im gonna get something i'll love for months- even years at this point#either way its nice knowing that yoko's at least aware of people who aren't happy with the price#and even besides that still just want to make a worthy game#aint nothin wrong with knowin your worth.. i think.#talking about videogame prices in general honestly im p sure the avg price for a game should be in the 100's by now#going off inflation anyway#so the fact devs are still trying to keep it under the $100 is. Something to me anyway#the quality of games- in terms of graphics anyway- has really gone up. idk if that warrants a FAT slap of an expense in the end#but it's not hard for me to understand the crawl towards it right#but now im ramblngi LMAOOOOOO anyways#haruka did nothing wrong yoko said it himself <3

The tech industry is a huge part of the Israeli economy (accounting for 50% of Israel's exports) and the Israeli government loves their tech sector because it's been indelibly married with their larger military industry complex. Many of the high-tech surveillance and security systems monitoring the Gaza wall, for example, are the product of Israel's massive tech-sector, and all that is for sale to the highest bidder.
So hearing Israel be audibly anxious about how mobilizing a huge swath of their citizenry for ethnic cleansing is hurting their economy, their precious tech sector in particular, fills me with only the pettiest schadenfreude.
But the anti-capitalist in me is also mesmerized by this new portrait of dystopia Israel has dropped. That of the citizen-soldier that must also continue to work part-time while soldiering:
Early on in the war, Raz [a software engineer] was at his base within a few miles of the border with Gaza preparing for a mission, while simultaneously talking on his phone with an overseas customer about a software project. "I had to juggle between those two," recalls Raz, sitting in his company's glass-walled office with a view of the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. "I remember it being super, super hard." Israeli aircraft were firing guns overhead while Raz was talking business with a client. "One of the customers asked, 'What's this noise?' and I had to explain that this is shooting sounds," Raz recalls.
It's like being an "essential worker" but instead of COVID it's a goddamn war. You could write an entire book about the absurd concept of a soldier being force to juggle his job in a warzone for the sake of the economy.
The tech sector in Israel builds a huge number of military and intelligence (i.e. spying) systems, which they export to other countries. It's such a vital part of Israel's entire economy that the IDF is actively pulling back soldiers to lessen the burden on their workforce.
Israel's own economic anxiety has done more to temper their war crimes than international pressure has so far managed.
#also it's just frustrating to read this NPR article and how it doesn't really interrogate anything in it#when they're usually a bit more critical in their usual Israel coverage#NPR#Big Tech#Israel Hamas War#IDF#Israeli Government#Israeli Apartheid#Capitalism#also just hearing an Israel soldier about how ''super super hard'' his job is though I couldn't resist muttering:#Gosh that must be so *DiFfIcULt* for you I'm sowwy.#🙄

i've gotten so used to my daily practice of reading french aloud that now when i have to read something boring in english for work i default to reading it aloud. which takes way longer and also i feel like i retain even less information than i would otherwise, somehow. the upside is that my oral reading cadence in english, even of dense scientific articles, is rather excellent nowadays. i could read scientific articles out loud for a living, if that was a thing people needed me to do. which they do not, because screenreaders are a thing. maybe i could read crusty PDFs out loud for a living? but anyway all this is to say shoutout to my man alexandre dumas and also my other man victor hugo for training me to read run-on sentences in my second language. after that, dry journal articles in my first language are easy peasy.
#this practice is giving me some insights that are relevant to my actual job though#i mean we already knew this but. try reading your sentences out loud. can someone understand them without seeing them?#if not...your sentence may be too complex and may need to be broken up into multiple sentences.#my clients have to write complicated shit in a readable manner and one of my coworkers had this whole#initiative for a while just trying to get them to write shorter sentences. but they completely ignored him lol#reading out loud also helps you catch typos. i caught so many in this published journal article just now (embarrassing for them)#i probably would have caught most of them if i had read it silently but you never know#it's really interesting to me that i think this skill of parsing syntax on the fly to modulate sentence-level prosody in french#seems to transfer to english. i mean that i've been practicing reading french aloud and it seems to have made me better at#reading english aloud too even though french and english have different syntax and punctuation conventions.#so that's convenient#french#syntax#prosody#my posts#i cannot believe i STARTED this daily practice with the count of fucking monte-cristo. way to start on hard mode. jesus#and then followed it up with les misérables of all things. am i a masochist??#don't answer that.

i think the point of a university-level education is a bit lost on some of my course mates...
#things are not going to be spoon fed to you you will have to do your own research#seek out your own education guided by lectures and assignments#relish that freedom instead of lamenting it!!#some of these assignments are actually good and ive been able to tailor them to my interests#like rn im learning about the uses of bracken in ancient scotland!#i just did a whole project on tomato grafting (i love solanaceae - tomato family) and whilst it was hard i did enjoy reading about it#we had some mini essays to research and they were so interesting to research and fun to write because one of them was a comparing two#articles and one of them was really bad so it was fun to rip it to shreds and actually apply the knowledge we've been accumulating in class#but i think the point of doing all this is lost on some of them#which is a real shame#maybe im just a nerd?#i very much have the benefit of doing a degree before this so maybe im being harsh#but saying that assessments suck doesnt make them any more interesting#also we have so much free reign over topic that if it sucks it's kind of on you a lil bit#though i will admit some of the assignments are stupid

writing advice is tricky bc i truly believe any kind of writing can work and any "rule" or trick can be broken effectively. Even "show don't tell" or unnecessary details or whatever. It really only comes down to execution, like show don't tell is good advice for writers who want to convey emotion and information in an interesting way to connect with the reader, but theres tons of very famous good writers who dont follow the rule. Its also hard bc not all writing styles can appeal to everyone, so "not liking the execution" might not exactly equal "bad execution". I guess my writing advice is to read authors who do interesting things with worldbuilding, prose, grammer, formatting, ect. Like get very varied, and to identify how you want to write and see what connects with you best, instead of relying on "dont do this" advice
#Like for example cormac mccarthy's writing style of no quotation marks#And almost no named characters could easily be very hard to read#But he had a method and rulebook for his own writing to stick to which made it really easy to read#I read an article where he talked abt his rules once#So basically start with what kind of feeling you want to evoke in your writing and then start figuring out how to achieve that#Set your OWN rules and limitations

ykw i actually do not blame those who choose to see or genuinely believe nightheart is a unreliable narrator bc i can actually see. that. however its also so hard to really dig it because the erins keep backtracking then adding these weird comments that are bascially just 'sure hes unreliable but also you Should side with him look how sad he is and everyone just doesnt understand but also who knows maybe thats not true maybe it is'
like. i feel like its just hard to really say until we actually get a real conclusion so i think fighting over it is kinda dumb..bc rereading Everything it just seems like. even the erins arent quite so sure and are desperately trying to fight between babying their male protagonist and going with something unique and greatly altering for the series. cause certain scenes Do read like unreliable narration but then every other scene it feels like the world is kinda of justifying every occurance despite what we are supposed to trust does that make sense
#maybe they just cant write a unreliable narrator pov?#like i can actually see how it sways that way#but its kind of#hard to truly believe it until theres real confirmation#either by the erins or by the end of this arc#bc those articles dont really help tbh#and it just seems atp theyre#coming up w shit lol#i dont think they know yet#text#mod talks#anyway after hearing abt the new excerpt#i did some reading#i dont think ill read the new book tbh#but i cant wait to read ppl talk abt it#thts all i care abt lol
