hugo really doing his darnedest to make sure i learn at least three different french words for "shithole"
#let's see we got galetas. we got taudis. we got bouge#i was thinking maybe gîte as well but when i look it up it seems more neutral#maybe it's that it kind of has the connotation of being for animals? or it used to? idk#oh and masure#there's also gargote but idk if i want to count that one or not. doesn't seem to have quite the same vibe#i finally looked up galetas today just to make sure i was pronouncing it right and guess what. i wasn't#i was like oh probably this is one of those s's at the ends of singular nouns that you actually pronounce. wrong!#i also looked up abject today because i'm never sure if i should be pronouncing the -ct on the end of adjectives or not#cuz i feel like sometimes suspect is suspect and sometimes it's suspe and i have NOT figured out the distinction#les mis#french#my posts#f#oh also if this is a safe space for my french pronunciation woes i really should know by now which -er adjectives have a mute r vs. not#but i don't :(#cheR and fieR but lége(mute r) and entie(mute r)? actually cher and fier feel right but it's léger and entier that trip me up#so maybe i should just assume that if pronouncing it with a mute r sounds at all like it could be a real form of the word‚ then it is#because fie(mute r) and che(mute r) feel very wrong#but lége(mute r) and entie(mute r)? ehhhhh. i guess?#i need to be listening to more actual french speakers not just talking to myself lol
