Birds and Mice and Tea Parties 20
Masterpost
AN: B really was trying his best to protect Danny last time, he just was missing too much information. Poor Danny...
No reading over. We suffer and post at 2am.
-
It had been two weeks since the last rogue Wayne visit.
Danny hadn’t intended to keep track. There was no reason to. One visit from Cass and one from Tim did not a pattern make.
He tried to dismiss the observation. He had plenty to do; it wasn’t like he didn’t have friends. The bi-weekly trivia group would start meeting again soon. He also had a TTRGP session that did its best to meet around all that life threw at them. Tucker and him played online games when they could make schedules match and he and Sam talked when she was stateside. He even had regular lunches with coworkers!
Still, there had been something different about spending time with the family.
So no, Danny hadn’t meant to keep track, but he still knew it had been two weeks and a day. But of course he wouldn’t see the Waynes that often. Bruce was a very busy man and most of the children would have no reason to come to W.E. They had their own lives with work and school and being kids or young adults. The other visits had simply been flukes, as nice as the visits had been.
The subtle feeling of melancholy that had settled over him was ridiculous and he wasn’t having it. His mood was simply off because of the whole Ancient thing. The way it was affecting his health didn’t make feeling better any easier either.
Danny leaned against the wall of the elevator as he tried to catch his breath. He really shouldn’t be walking right then to get lunch, not with the way that he felt, but he hadn’t had anything at his place to make lunch with. He hadn’t had the energy to go shopping. He’d just go somewhere close instead of walking to anything on the other side of the park.
The natural reverb of the lobby assaulted Danny as he stepped out of the elevator.
He just had to get through the lobby, the street, the restaurant, back through the street, and through the lobby again. Then he could hide in his office and eat. Or he could hide in there and eat as long as Lucius didn’t find him. Maybe even Lucius would give him a break today though.
“Dr. Fenton…?”
Danny looked up from rubbing his neck.
It was Tim. Damian was at Tim’s side, flanking him like a little guard dog and scowling. Tim was frowning too. Danny immediately wanted to fix whatever was wrong.
“Look at that, a pair of Waynes. How are you two?”
“That is unimportant,” Damian said with a little sniff. “You are clearly unwell. I assume you are returning to your apartment to rest?”
“Oh, no, I’m just going to go grab lunch. I’m alright, really,” Danny said and put on the best smile he could muster.
Tim and Damian looked at each other in some sort of silence conversation. Danny started to edge away from them, thinking he could escape before they came to some sort of end. He really needed out of the lobby and its echoing sounds.
A startled shriek from the entry way cut off that plan.
Danny twisted to face the sound as he stepped in front of the kids.
Of course it was a rogue, what else would it be in Gotham? It was a rogue, but at least it was the Mad Hatter and his squad of likely mind controlled goons. He usually wasn’t prone to death and destruction like some of the others were. But still, Danny felt his metaphorical hackles rising. The kids were here.
The kids were here and sure to draw the Mad Hatter’s attention if he saw them. Danny stepped slowly backwards, herding the kids away from the scene. At least they weren’t far into the lobby.
“Back up to the stairwell,” Danny said lowly, trying to cast his voice behind him.
“Tch. We can—”
“The elevator, the back left one,” Tim said quietly but firmly over his brother’s protest. “I have a code to take it to a safe room in the basement.”
“If he kills the power,” Danny started.
“The elevators have emergency back up.”
“That’s not very good behavior for a tea party, is it?” the Matter Hatter shouted at someone.
Danny bit back a rising noise of anger in his throat. His fingers twitched to act. But he couldn’t. The best plan was to get the kids out of there away from any action.
“Yes I see, Damian,” Tim hissed. “We’re almost to the elevator.”
“Call it as soon as you can,” Danny said. Was there a reverb to his voice? It felt like there was a reverb to his voice. No, no, he couldn’t, he had to…
“That’s better! See? This is how you behave when someone invites you to a tea party! Now where is that little dormouse?” the Mad Hatter called. “I know I saw him come in here! With an even littler one too.”
He wanted Tim.
“Calling the elevator.”
“Another mouse? A rat? A cat?"
The Mad Hatter wanted Tim and Damian.
“Here mousy mouse mice… where are you?"
Danny would not let that happen.
“Oh there you are! Hiding back by the doors, of course he is!” The Mad Hatter said. The crowed parted in fear. His wide, manic eyes looked right past Danny and he grinned. “Get them. We have a tea party we’re late for.”
“Over my dead body,” Danny growled.
The Mad Hatter blinked at Danny like he just noticed him for the first time. His goons rushed past him and through the crowd. “Oh, who are you? Never mind, if death is what you want, we can make that happen.”
Danny couldn’t hold back the chortling laughter. “See, that’s where you have a problem you don’t even know you could have.”
“And what is that?”
“You couldn’t handle my dead body,” Danny said just as the first goon reached them.
Danny stepped forward. He ducked under the swing of the punch and used the momentum to spin the goon around. With a push of his ghostly power, he sent the attacking goon careening into the next one and they both went tumbling.
“Danny, it’s here!” Tim shouted.
Not turning his back to the attackers, Danny stepped backwards into the elevator. Tim slammed a button and the doors basically snapped closed, much faster than they should. Danny was left staring at the polished metal surface of the elevator. Luminous green stared back at him. Soft black feathers dotted his temples. His fingers ended in talons. And he could feel it.
He could feel the skin on his back started to split.
Wings.

In Coraline, there’s a recurring theme with names and identity, and I personally don't think it's talked about enough.
(As a note, this is dealing largely with the book, not the movie, although there are some hints of this theme in the movie as well)
Coraline’s neighbors constantly get her name wrong, calling her “Caroline” and not “Coraline”, to which she persistently corrects them. Despite her attempts, they never get it right, until chapter 10, in which Mr Bobo (Mr Bobinsky) finally gets it right.
Tumblr media
"It's Coraline, Mister Bobo," said Coraline. "Not Caroline. Coraline." "Coraline," said Mr Bobo, repeating her name to himself with wonderment and respect. "Very good, Coraline."
It should be noted that, until this chapter, Coraline did not know Mr Bobo’s name either. In fact, it had never even occurred to her that he had a name. Up until then, she had just been thinking of him as “the crazy old man upstairs”, not as a person with a name. This moment, with her learning his name and him getting her name right, is a moment of genuine understanding and connection between the two, humanizing them both to each other.
Coraline’s other neighbors get her name wrong, which is representative of them not listening when she says anything, really, such as her telling Miss Spink and Forcible that her parents are missing and them literally not even acknowledging it at all??
Tumblr media
"How are your dear mother and father?" asked Miss Spink. "Missing," said Coraline. "I haven't seen either of them since yesterday. I'm on my own. I think I've probably become a single child family." "Tell your mother that we found the Glasgow Empire press clippings we were telling her about. She seemed very interested when Miriam mentioned them to her." "She's vanished under mysterious circumstances," said Coraline, "and I believe my father has as well." "I'm afraid we'll be out all day tomorrow, Caroline lovely," said Miss Forcible. "We'll be staying with April's niece in Royal Tunbridge Wells."
Mr Bobo gets her name right after being corrected (only after being corrected alongside her using his name, mind you, showcasing her making an effort to listen to and understand him as well), which is representative of him actually making an attempt to listen and understand her. This point is further illustrated by a conversation Coraline had with the Other Mr Bobo in chapter 10.
Tumblr media
As Coraline entered he began to talk. "Nothing's changed, little girl," he said, his voice sounding like the noise dry leaves make as they rustle across a pavement. "And what if you do everything you swore you would? What then? Nothing's changed. You'll go home. You'll be bored. You'll be ignored. No one will listen to you, not really listen to you. You're too clever and too quiet for them to understand. They don't even get your name right."
He equates those in the real world not getting Coraline’s name right with them not listening to her, and fundamentally not understanding who she is. So, somebody getting her name right, then, shows them actually listening to her, and being willing to understand who she is.
The mice in the real world know more than they should be able to know, and they also get Coraline’s name right.
Tumblr media
"The message is this. Don't go through the door." He paused. "Does that mean anything to you?" "No," said Coraline. The old man shrugged. "They are funny, the mice. They get things wrong. They got your name wrong, you know. They kept saying Coraline. Not Caroline. Not Caroline at all."
They seem to know about the other world, somehow, on some level, and the dangers it presents. Them getting her name right represents them knowing more than they should know, more than they are told. Animals in general seem to have this type of quality in Coraline, actually.
The cat does not have a name. It says so in chapter 4, that cats do not need names. It says that this is because cats know who they are. But humans need names, because they do not.
Tumblr media
"Please. What's your name?" Coraline asked the cat. "Look, I'm Coraline. OK?" The cat yawned softly, carefully, revealing a mouth and tongue of astounding pinkness. "Cats don't have names," it said. "No?" said Coraline. "No," said the cat. "Now, you people have names. That's because you don't know who you are. We know who we are, so we don't need names."
Tumblr media
The cat shook its head. "No," it said. "I'm not the other anything. I'm me." It tipped its head on one side; green eyes glinted. "You people are spread all over the place. Cats, on the other hand, keep ourselves together. If you see what I mean."
This shows that, in humans, names are connected to our identities and who we are. Names are used to individualize and distinguish ourselves from each other. But cats do not need names to recognize each other, or be recognized.
Tumblr media
"Oh. It's you," she said to the black cat. "See?" said the cat. "It wasn't so hard recognising me, was it? Even without names."
With or without names, it is still the same cat.
During the Other Miss Spink and Forcible’s performance, in chapter 4, they begin quoting Shakespeare. The specific quotes that they use are interesting to me when looked at under this lens of the importance of names, especially Miss Forcible’s.
Tumblr media
"What's in a name?" asked Miss Forcible. "That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."
Tumblr media
"I know not how to tell thee who I am," said Miss Spink to Miss Forcible.
Now, of course, this is just them quoting Shakespeare. But. Why these quotes specifically? They’re at the very least notable when discussing Coraline’s recurring theme of names. Especially the quote about the rose. It makes me think of what the cat said earlier, about how cats are sure of who they are so they don’t need names, about how Coraline didn’t need the cat’s name to be able to recognize it for who/what it was.
But, of course, this does not apply for humans. We need our names to be able to know ourselves, to be able to tell others who they are.
In chapter 6, Coraline wakes up and is disoriented. This disorientation is compared to the feeling one might experience upon being suddenly pulled out of a daydream. In this comparison, forgetting one’s name is equated with forgetting who one is and where one is.
Tumblr media
Sometimes Coraline would forget who she was while she was daydreaming that she was exploring the Arctic, or the Amazon rainforest, or darkest Africa, and it was not until someone tapped her on the shoulder or said her name that Coraline would come back from a million miles away with a start, and all in the fraction of a second have to remember who she was, and what her name was, and that she was even there at all. Now there was the sun on her face, and she was Coraline Jones. Yes.
The ghost children have also forgotten their names, and with it most of who they were. In chapter 7, when Coraline is locked behind the mirror in the Other World, one of the ghost children says that names are the first things that one forgets after death.
Tumblr media
"Who are you?" whispered Coraline. "Names, names, names," said another voice, all faraway and lost. "The names are the first thing to go, after the breath has gone, and the beating of the heart. We keep our memories longer than our names. I still keep pictures in my mind of my governess on some May morning, carrying my hoop and stick, and the morning sun behind her, and all the tulips bobbing in the breeze. But I have forgotten the name of my governess, and of the tulips too." "I don't think tulips have names," said Coraline. "They're just tulips." "Perhaps," said the voice sadly. "But I have always thought that these tulips must have had names. They were red, and orange-and-red, and red-and-orange-and-yellow, like the embers in the nursery fire of a winter's evening. I remember them."
The ghost children may have their memories, but they have largely forgotten who they were. They may remember their tulips, and certain strong memories, but there is very, very little left of them, and they have forgotten who they once were, they have forgotten their names.
Tumblr media
"That is why we could not leave here, when we died. She kept us, and she fed on us, until now we're nothing left of ourselves, only snakeskins and spider-husks. Find our secret hearts, young mistress."
Tumblr media
"She will take your life and all you are and all you care'st for, and she will leave you with nothing but mist and fog. She'll take your joy. And one day you'll awake and your heart and soul will have gone. A husk you'll be, a wisp you'll be, and a thing no more than a dream on waking, or a memory of something forgotten."
The Other Mother stole their hearts and their souls and their selves. She stole who they were away from them, their identities and names and the names of those they loved, leaving nothing in her wake.
The same ghost that talked about the tulips and the names of the tulips struggles to answer when Coraline asks their gender, as well, and when they do eventually give an answer they seem somewhat unsure of it, as shown by the word choice of “perhaps” and “I believe”
Tumblr media
"A boy, perhaps, then," continued the one whose hand she was holding. "I believe I was once a boy." And it glowed a little more brightly in the darkness of the room behind the mirror.
(I personally take this quote, specifically it "glow[ing] a little more brightly" after coming to this conclusion, to mean either that the ghost is happy at realizing that he was once a boy, or even to mean that he has become somewhat more tangible upon this realization; upon remembering something about his self, and his identity.)
As an aside, it's noteworthy to me that we never learn the Other Mother’s true name. She is simply “The Other Mother” and “The Beldam.” Never is an actual name applied to her, only titles. We do not truly know who, or what, she is. Beings without names are shrouded in mystery (or should i say mist-ery). The ghost children are benevolent mysterious beings, the cat is an ambivalent-leaning-helpful mysterious being, and the other mother is a distinctly malevolent mysterious being.
Tumblr media
"Who are you?" asked Coraline. "I'm your other mother," said the woman.
Tumblr media
"She?" "The one who says she's your other mother," said the cat. "What is she?" asked Coraline. The cat did not answer, just padded through the pale mist beside Coraline.
But in conclusion, names in Coraline are extremely important. I’m sure there’s probably more that I'm missing, and feel free to add onto this, but basically—
People need names to know and remember who they are, and forgetting one’s name is the first step to losing the rest of who one is. Names humanize a person; with a name, they are less shrouded in mystery, more clear.
Knowing somebody's name helps one connect to and better understand that person; it is the first step in getting to know them and see them as a full person, the transition from “the crazy man upstairs” to “Mr Bobo”. Names, to people at least, are one of the fundamental building blocks of who we are.

Makima, devils and self-fulfillment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dumping some Makima and CSM thoughts after a part 1 binge bc I think about her forever and ever. I’m sure I’m forgetting some devil lore, feel free to correct what i get wrong/what’s been confirmed. On the table of contents there’s why & how Makima got fixated on Chainsaw, her revealing liking for the country mouse and discussion of her nature & emotions & desires. Was the scorpion doomed to be a scorpion?
The most of this post was thought of during a conversation with @saccharineomens and I don’t think it makes sense to jump into the spiral it sent me on without first laying down the interesting groundwork theorizing she did:
"Thinking about how makima herself wants to be deified. I wonder whether she recognizes the difference between Love As Worship and the love that Aki, Power, and Denji had. She says she wants to help humanity by having Chainsawman eat the “bad” devils, but why does she want to help humans? Because she was ordered to by the Prime Minister? No, her drive seems much more personal than that, it seems like she teamed up with the PM for contractual reasons. (In the most recent chapters we see governmental members wanting certain devils to be eaten, too. What was Makima’s relationship with them? She’s too independent to just follow THEIR orders, she’s Control.)
So is she wanting to better humanity for the accolades, or out of the goodness of her heart? She sees the big picture. She sees any small sacrifice as worth it for the end result, and she’s ruthless. Perhaps she thinks that a more sedate human race would be easier to control? But Makima doesn’t loathe humanity. She never acts like she sees all humans as lesser. She loves humanity’s creations, like good food and movies. She just wants Good Things all the time
She says she prefers the country mouse BUT adds a story where she helps exterminate country mice like vermin. She likes the simplicity yet rejects the idea of being simple. Makima the complex individual you are"
~
The story itself seems to prefr the country mouse. Well- it strikes a balance, shows that a risk to live good & fully can be very worth it, but still that stability over ambition is preferable, proning having a simple happy life over fame, a simple job instead of a dangerous one, etc etc. And I do find Makima’s answer on this so so interesting, she prefers the country mouse, but this preference isn’t out of affection or sympathy but because of how relaxing it feels to exterminate them when they cause problems.
Order satisfies her. Her order satisfies her. She likes the action of rooting out disorder. Maybe this is the devil part, like how Power especially wants blood and drinking it, I feel there’s an itch to every devil, and for Makima it’s a very rigid world view/morality/standards & making things follow her rules and submit to her order.
And maybe this is why she’s attached to humans too, why she felt it was worth it to stick with the government- because devils are chaotic by nature (it’s a whole plot point that hell is essentially a free-for-all battleground for example), meanwhile humans are the species that universally rule Earth with systems they invented and instilled. They made then enforced rules, complex and intricate webs of them. She feels alienated amongst devils but she understands the humans’ need for an orderly organised society, and now she wants to be part of it. Control and conquest require social dynamics after all, requires civilizations or groups. War is chaotic while peace is, well, peaceful— Makima resents her sisters for being death, famine and war, things that throw the world in such chaos. She wants a world of perfect order, no matter how much collateral damage there will be if the end result is control.
This is even more interesting if you consider that yes, Makima is untouchable of her own design, she deifies herself with her omnipresent amount of control and the sway over others that she seeks and encourages— There is this urge to dehumanize her for it, that yes, she is the devil of control and that means she was never going to be any different, have any more feeling be any less uncanny. And I love part 2 so much for this, because it shows us the war devil and the famine devil and we see how frankly uncharismatic with poor self-discipline they are, Nayuta too, and it helps us realize just how much Makima’s success was self-made.
She admires Chainsaw Devil, the Hero of Hell, because he had his own code and his own rules and he made Hell, the chaos pit, submit to them unfailingly. Wherever he goes he decides what he does and what happens to the people he encounters but does so consistently, he has his mechanism and his rules that he always obeys, and he fulfills them every time. It’s still a mystery the why of Chainsaw Devil’s behavior back then and how it works exactly, maybe Pochita left hell because he was tired of these rules he lived by like chains, but still, he was a servant to his code. Makima would have been glad being killed and eaten by Chainsaw Devil because it’d have been becoming part of his design, his conquest, his domination, she’d have been part of that —his— order. Through her death she would be shaping his world and be part of a conqueror’s making history. Like how she appreciates the country mice that die for the sake of order. Like how sacrifices must be made to herself, like listing the name of every person whose life was lost to the Gun Devil— All for the ~greater good~, for her vision for the world. Conquest always thinks its reasons are justified.
Tumblr media
And she does mention with the country mice thing that she goes out to a friend’s farm every year! She has a human friend?? That she visits yearly and she genuinely likes it?? Ultimately she lives a busy city life because of her goal and drive and her urge & satisfaction with overseeing shaping the world herself, but part of her, like so many characters including Angel and Aki and Reze, wishes she could live a slow peaceful country life. Moviegoing and dogs and mice in a farm- Wouldn’t it be so much simpler if Makima could find fulfillment and happiness in being a farmer, in keeping control of her own farm, getting satisfaction from exterminating vermin and expertly getting everything right, the right crops grown at the right time on the right soil? Here, too, in a way it’s trying to have full control of an ecosystem, but her goals would be easier to achieve and better, without ceaseless sacrifice or much pressure. But Makima wants grandiosity and her goal does matter to her on a fundamental and moral level, she does think she knows what’s best for the world, and with the power to change it why wouldn’t she strive to? Visiting the farm is just a break, just something she does in fall to help out and just in time to see the vermin extermination. It calms her, then it’s back to actual work.
In capitalism, even the one at the very top of the ladder is ultimately alienated from others and often unsatisfied by their lifestyle, always wanting more and more power because surely that’s the extra edge they must be missing to be content— like how Makima thinks she wants to dominate Chainsaw Devil instead of being his equal. And she says it herself too, she likes humans the way humans like dogs…….. And she keeps so many dogs :( Makima prefers the country mice because they’re calming to root out, maybe because she usually mainly deals with city mice. It’s very easy to equate humans to the mice in this allegory because it’s pretty direct and she’s already likened humans to lesser animals compared to her. She’s self-isolating by design for her design but she still craves relationships and contentment, and the dogs are the embodiment or her want for bonds and occasional simplicity because there is no possible ulterior motive, no way they tie back into her wider plan. They’re her personal life— something that feels so alien when speaking about Makima. Personality and individuality and likes and preferences and friends they visit every year. She likes how easily she can train a dog and how they become putty in her hands, at her beck and call, how much they love her and how much she enjoys their love. How simple and straightforward and easy it is. She keeps them because she likes being loved by them and loving them, and she’s gotten and raised so many. A conqueror always wants more and more and more, is never satisfied.
Devils and agency
Tumblr media
Like Power the blood devil wanting blood and having a fixation on drinking it like with Denji’s, or how it was shocking that the violence devil was pretty tame and nice and how he himself theorized it was because he was a fiend and possessing a human body… There’s something to be said about nature vs nurture with the devils. The way they reincarnate and always embody their fear makes it seem categorically like nature, that they always always end up fulfilling the role they were named after and born to fill… Outside influence they’re helpless but to conform with. Like the humans accepting their spot in the social ladder and the shittiness of their living conditions and job under capitalism. Makima craved being equals with someone despite being the control/conquest devil, Angel Devil despite claiming to be a devil who likes to see humans dying was haunted by their deaths and wanted to avoid ones like Aki’s. The Ghost Devil being ironically haunted by Himeno, seemingly helping Aki in her memory out of… Lasting affection? Or maybe it was less about being haunted itself and more about it recognizing how Himeno haunted Aki, and acknowledging that, with the memento, paying her respect to the ghost of her. It’s Angel Devil’s devil nature that makes him like human suffering, so then is it his angel nature too to still care about their deaths? Is there truth to this or is that just personality, just our confirmation bias haunting every part of their identity like it might in their own view of themselves too? We do know different reincarnations of devils do have different personalities after all.
Yoru, war devil, is the most interesting one when talking about the nature vs nurture debate with devils. There is how through her we see the perhaps the most the consequences of a devil stopping being feared— we see a horseman for a concept as universal and horrifying as war be reduced to some bird who needs a contract with a human to have any power even just on the situation when meeting Asa. And through the story we get to know her better, and it becomes clear that her goal is fueled in good part by simply wanting to be remembered and respected through fear. Liked, validated, seen a powerful. But what is more isolating than war? Or control? We also see Nayuta accepting others’ house rules. If part 1 shows perhaps the futility of running away from the truth, with Denji’s memory, with escapist coping mechanisms, with passivity and denial under a corrupt system and with abusive relationships- running away from your own feelings and from the reality of things and from all that you are, more complex than simply human or devil or both or neither— part 2 builds upon the theme of cult of personalities, the chainsaw church, etc. The apocalypse is coming, but this celebrity superhero might save us all, or doom us all uh, dunno. The hero of hell reliving the cycle of pressure from responsibilities and expectations, maybe the part will end with Denji running away like Pochita did~
But yes, on the reverse, I think Famine is a very interesting example of how a devil’s namesake may be more innate than coerced by circumstances. One would think that a famine devil would only like inflicting famine upon others, not being famished itself, but Famine has a bottomless stomach that can never, ever be satisfied, sated. I struggle to find a psychological explanation for this, except that maybe instead of her being hungry it’s her feeling empty when she’s not eating, tasting and having that high sensory experience that releases serotonin in humans, sort of like drugs? But I do take this as a step towards the compulsion theory overall, feels like a reach in the consistency otherwise. And compulsion does not mean it’s something that they like nor that it’s something that they fight against, pretty neutral, just a nature that nudges you towards one path. Maybe it’s even just their go-to for entertainment. Maybe it’s the only thing that makes them feel right and whole. But still the debate remains, what is it, a compulsion or an urge or an itch or an active desire or a conscious chosen want? Does it change anything in practice?
And because of all of this earlier, devils being self-fulfilling prophecies with their role is not in unsignificant part nurture, because doing their atrocities is how they stay remembered— feared, powerful, known— hell and devils are a very isolating place and breed after all, and we do see devils can want companionship. Existentially, it’s their purpose and how they justify their place in the world, in the terrifyingly vast and unknowable cosmos.
We still know so little of what makes Chainsaw Devil so special, why his carnage is so self-controlled. Despite a chainsaw maybe being possibly one of the most "nature" thing you can be— a tool to cut things, a human tool that can be helpful for many things, something to be wielding by another at their judgement on what they decide, but mainly something to cut, a tool suited for carnage, to hurt and to destroy. A blade with a toothed chain, spinning around and around and around endlessly on the same road at the same pace. Such a…. Innately circular concept. And yet the Chainsaw Devil is his own, not driven by an urge or by chaos but his very own brand of order, his own unique assigned purpose, a "if you call i’ll come running to help" policy equalizing everyone. He chooses to withhold his destruction and interference otherwise, and then he chooses to be used. If it’s a choice, of course.
Maybe this is what inspired Makima so much, that Chainsaw Devil could decide what to make of himself despite expectations or innate role. Because even Hell he decided & managed to subjugate under his will and whim, with a precise vision and process. When Chainsaw Devil acts like Denji or is defeated, Makima clicks her tongue and loses her admiration and respect. Makima admired and liked Chainsaw Devil, but only as long as he matched her great image of him in her mind, as long as he followed he rules for what she thinks he should be like. She admired him for his unrivaled self-made success, but once he stepped out of that to truly embody self-fulfillment and agency, disappearing from hell to live on his own road at the beat of his own drum… Well. Surely that was a mistake she has to correct. However their second battle ends, the better conqueror will have prevailed and she’s happy about that, all in the spirit of domination and subjugation.
Imo Makima’s biggest tool, similarly capitalism’s most helpful effect for its own purposes, is complacency. Resignation and passivity helps uphold the system and go along the flow of the will of the people in power. Aki and Reze go along with orders even when knowing their job is trash, etc. In Angel Devil especially we see him go along with the flow uncaring about anyhing, and we discover it was in part due to Makima taking away memories that motivated him. If every devil decides this is just how things are and how things should be that’s what they’ll continue to be and do mindlessly, not pursuing a better life like Chainsaw Devil and Denj and not seeking to change the world like Makima. I think even Makima veils herself to a lot of things, she doesn’t like to think deeply about some things, like her desire for connection, or how making bad movies disappear is strenuous and unsustainable and requiring sacrifices at best— how her judgement is as subjective as anyone else. How liking the country mouse and her friend back at the farm and her dogs could be not devoid of sentimality. Wanting bad movies erased is her one biggest show of selfishness, of pettiness and individuality, it’s about her tastes, simple as. About how she can have tastes, and cry seeing a scene of people hug, and want things that aren’t logical, her ideology and mind twisted into a pretzel to avoid acknowledging that she doesn’t live and breathe purely for the mission she’s made a single-minded robot out of herself to accomplish. Nayuta is assertive and selfish and loud, Makima is manipulative and strategically both for her goals and for coping hollow.

Everything in her plans and goals she says is for the greater good, necessary evil, manufactured happiness the way she’ll have decided for people— and that’s the thing isn’t it, like with War, it’s the crack that shows it was all truly about herself after all. Her self-made deification still had the flaw that a self made it. Makima is not omniscient, and it’s not Chainsaw Devil the not-so-fellow-kindred-soul conqueror who gets the best of her, but a city mouse, a dog, someone she would have never thought to respect, Denji.
#Fumi rambles#Chainsaw man#makima#analysis#meta#The goal is moreso me dropping thoughts than being flawless on every aspect of the lore so if and when i get things wrong b merciful….#Maybe her liking of control is why she remembers the ww2 authoritarian fascists. I don’t want to say the word jic for tumblr search#Pity is never a factor When mercy is a sign of a talentless actor#And as you grow its hold on your throat starts to falter And once you go beyond pure humanity's border#You will come back like a dooooog 😭#This’d be a different topic but. I don’t think makima likes denji as much as one of her dogs. If so i’d say it was in the moments where#she brought him to movies but even then….. i think she has more fondness for her dogs bc w denji it was indifference and derision#I love you please humiliate me / strip my dignity and laugh my honey#God. God i’m fine. I’m so okay about csm#Makima has a cryptic but strong sense of morals?? That doesn’t align with ours obvi but#‘Someone like you has no right to wish for a normal life do they?’ What do you meannn what do you meannnnn#What is this contempt for denji. Does she see herself as moral or part of those that are city mice bc they’re undeserving of a calm life???#Maybe famine only feels fed on humans and their blood 🤔 or their fear. man idk idk idk idk but i wanna see more of her quirks#And before someone says ‘but every demon likes to drink blood’ power is especially fixated on it tho cmannnn#Did Angel lie when he said he liked seeing humans die?? Did his haunting thing become worse after meeting Aki?? Did he suppress it#because he feels like he doesn’t belong as a devil??? bc he’s suppressing his memories of the villagers he cared about??#Has he just been trying so hard not to care for so long. Passive bc he thought that’s all he could or should be#AGHHHHH#Spoilers#There’s a lot more i’d have liked to touch on like the popular theory that Makima was *raised* by the government#and i’ve seen a take that the ‘my friend at a farm’ thing is all euphemism from makima about her troublesome human killing job ykyk#but i think the phrasing is too literal and natural for that. The snow and soil talk everything. It’s a perfect allegory but it can be both

Draconic Inquiries
Tumblr media
Venti x Dragon! Reader
Safe for all Audiences!
Warnings: None! Just pure fluff and Gn! Reader!
Request Box: Open
Word count: 1634
A/N: Hi, thank you for the request! I’m sorry it took so long! There was a lot of hiccups that came up this past week, but I’m happy to finally have had gotten to finishing this!
I wasn’t sure if you wanted a Fluff Fic or head-canons so I did both! I would have asked you but I was already upset that it took this long to write, so I decided not to! I also wrote it to be romantic! I hope this is ok! If not, just shoot me another request and I’ll make you a new one!!
Proofread but of course I could have missed something.
He was first introduced to you via The Traveler, and right away he could tell something about you reminded him a lot of that "old block-head" as Venti so eloquently puts it. Of course, you weren’t anything like Zhongli, but there were some very similar aspects between the two of you at a more biological level.
It didn't take him long to figure it out though, despite his carefree and lovable nature, he is quite perceptive. He could tell from the power imitating from you, that you weren't some regular run of the mill Allogene. The power that you gave off wasn't exactly like his or even most of the other archons it was more… Pure? Something more undisturbed than most elemental beings.
Whatever you were, he wasn't sure if you were open about it, Him, being an Archon, would make him relate to you regarding hiding the truth about yourself, if that is the case. So he decided to ask you about it alone. You were a bit hesitant at first to outright admit it, especially to a person who seemed so interested. Being an Elemental beast, were able to sense an alarming amount of Anemo Energy coming from this short drunkard bard, way too much to just be some regular mortal.
When you finally reveal yourself to be a dragon, he's honestly pretty excited. He's only ever met 4 dragons in his 2600+ year life span, Zhongli, who was just annoyed by any questions he would ask, Dvalin, who, despite being one of his closest friends, is also annoyed by many of his drunken inquiries. Durin and Ursa the Drake tried destroying Mondstadt so they were definitely not an option... So he's been dying to ask a vishap some questions.
And Immediately they started
"Dragon's have hoards, right? Surely there has to be a teensy bit of fine wine there? No? Darn it..."
"Can you breathe fire?!"
"Is it true that dragon's are scared of mice? Eh... Wait! no! That's Elephants. Nevermind!"
It was quite a lot to process and answer them all in time before he went on to the next question. Eventually he seemed to run out of them, that or he saw how distressed you were trying to keep up.
"That's enough questions for today, Ehe! Next time we should have our conversation over a nice cold glass of cider!"
"Next time?"
Venti then, from that day forward, had the two of you meeting up more and more, He would bring the drinks, both Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic, depending on if you drink or not. and every time, Venti would somehow come up with more and more questions about your heritage, nonstop rambling of questions that would go from dusk till dawn. He seemed to never run out of them. But eventually he would start asking questions that weren't about your Draconic lifestyle. Things like,
"So Y/n, have you ever dated anyone before?"
"Hey Yn! Have you heard that the Windblume Festival is coming soon? Ehe, What do you think the original windblume was? Cecilia? Great choice!"
"Have you ever been to Windrise? It's the place with the huge tree! Huh? eh, You haven't? I'll make sure to show you sometime"
The Windblume festival finally comes around, the whole of Mondstadt was in a fury of unending joy, there were games, foods and deserts, the entire of the city’s buildings were all decorated in many different flowers and ribbons. Dandelions soared through the air, each one carrying the wish of a soul in Mondstadt.
The Day was fantastic, but it seems Venti had more energy to spend after the day's festivities, Venti drags you by the hand through the decorated city streets, past the vendor's shops, and over the bridge, all while you were blindfolded. Of course, you were a little scared being led through all these places without even knowing where exactly you were, but your elemental sense was top notch, not to mention your regular senses at that. So you knew you weren't in any real danger.
"Venti, this is a bit dramatic, even for you"
"Eh he… very funny Y/n, but we're almost there! Just a few more steps and... There!"
The pulling of your hand suddenly stops and Venti’s hand lets go of yours, with one quick motion the blindfold obscuring your eyes was snatched clean off. It took a second for your eyes to adjust, the sun beginning to set but even then being blindfolded caused even the slightest of light to sting your eyes.
Looking up, a big tree hung over you both, lying under the tree, just by the roots, was a checkered red and white blanket layed across the viridescent grass, a seemingly warnout picnic basket layed atop it. From where you stood you could make out a plethora of food and drinks, Pie, Dandelion wine, Apples. You certainly knew there was more, you could tell just from your sense of smell.
But the most notable feature about the fairytale esq scene in front of you was Venti, holding something, a bouquet of Ceclia’s
"These are what you believe to be the original Windblume right? I picked them myself so, rest assured! They’re guaranteed to be the best of quality, ehe!"
"Y/n, the time we’ve spent together these past few months have meant the world to me... Since the moment you arrived in Mondstadt, you’ve been tangled up in every thought of my mind, you've become all I can think about, my one and only worry, my muse, my... everything... What I'm trying to say is, Y/n, I love you and if you feel the same, could you continue being my muse?" His arms stretch slightly to you, offering you the bouquet in his hand.
Everything about this, the scenery, the way he asked, down to the golden hour from the sun, it was all so unforgettable. Your hands slowly move to grasp the Cecilia’s, bringing them up to your face and smelling them.
“Nothing would make me happier, Venti”
Venti’s eyes lit up, blush washed his face as a soft breeze quickly caried him over to you as he practically tackled you into his embrace, the sudden forces causes you both to spin in each others arms, all while Venti’s heartfelt laugh drowns out all other sounds.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” His voice grew louder with the repetition as a gleeful smile plastered on his face. He reaches back from his embrace, quickly grabbing his lyre and giving it a few test strums.
“The day isn’t over yet! Allow me to serenade you with a song I’ve made especially for you, my muse.”
And with that, you both continued to laugh and sing throughout the night. The sounds of the feverish festivities of you both echoed through Windrise, your love that would last for eons to come, dancing across the wind.
You both truly, couldn’t be happier.
HEADCANONS
Venti always makes sure that he’s always there for you when you aren’t your best mentally or physically. He cudddles you when your sad, listens to you when you’re upset. Overall he may be a loud bard but he’s also a great listener!
And speaking of cuddles he LOVES them. Since youre a dragon, your body temperature is a lot higher than humans, so he loves the warmth close to him. And if you ever decide to cuddle while IN dragon form then he wouldn’t let you leave for a while. (I also headcanon that since he’s a wind spirit, his body temperature isn’t that high so he’s often a little cold, so an S/o with a high body temperature would be perfect for him)
Regardless of if you can fly or not in dragon form, he loves to go on walks with you, and by “walks” I mean YOU do the walking and he just sits on your back. If you CAN fly than he’d be less of a koala and actually fly with you.
(You may have scared a few of the locals but love is love)
If there’s ever a time that you have to fight, either to protect him, yourself or something else, he will always have your back. Of course, him being a Wind Spirit and an Archon he has at least some power but after losing his Gnosis and him being demoted to the least powerful archon, he’s not incredibly strong. But you being a dragon seems to make up for his lack of power. The times you’ve saved him from some lowly fatuus trying to ambush him, he really couldn’t be more thankful.
He’s really into PDA (no surprise there) so kisses, handholding, etc are all commonplace. He's also always bringing you gifts like food. He’s not much of a baker, but he’d try to make anything for you that you’d want. (Just uh… don’t expect it to be anything spectacular)
Gifts he likes are Cider (obvi) and of course, Apples! You’d get him the finest of wines, (that’s totally not from your dragon hoard, because you are TOTALLY not that kind of dragon •-•^) and he would love them more each time.
He would eventually introduce you to Dvailn (it’s his best bud so it’s a given you’d meet him eventually) and Zhongli who he thought you two might have something in common with.
Overall, having a dragon S/o is one of the best things to happen to him (Tied only with that time Diluc accidentally left his wine cellar unlocked) He’s always wanting to learn more about you and loves spending time with you!

Cinderella
Tumblr media
okay so this got really really long so I had to shift the behind the scenes part for another post at last moment. Also I'm really sorry for how long this might look, I did try to edit it in small font but it was just unreadable so yeah >.<
[no beta because me is sick]
prepare yourselves for a ride. also special mention to @its-irsaa-fyp because our random midnight talk brought this au to life
hope you guys enjoy it ^^
this story revolves around a kind-hearted and beautiful girl named Yui Komori who lives with her stepmother and stepsisters. Her own mother died a long time ago, and father just met with an accident recently while on his way to travel.
???: oh~ cinderella~! cinderella~~!— Yui! Yui!
???: where did she disappear!? me and teddy are starving! is she still asleep!!?
unfortunately for Yui, her stepmother and stepsisters were not that welcoming as from the start they referred to her as Cinderella.
"someone or something that is given little attention or care, especially less than they deserve"
to mock her.
Yui: *sigh* they are at it again.
Yui stretched her sleepy arms as the birds started singing to awaken her and her favorite three mice pulled away the blanket to snuggle on her lap to get some morning pats.
these animals were the only ones who took care of her in this cold and insufferable household.
one of the three mices suddenly spoke to get Yui's attention.
Azusa: why… don't you just… run away from here?
Ruki: Azusa, it's not that easy for humans to run away like us animals. they need backup and basic requirements before moving away to guarantee their safety and survival.
Yuma: sheesh, glad I'm a mouse. if only you had done some good deeds in your previous life, then you would have been a mouse like us, Yui.
Yui chuckled at Yuma's comment and shook her head which made him blush. was it out of embarrassment or shyness? nobody knows. well of course except his brothers Ruki and Azusa.
Ruki: you should leave, before they barge into your room and mess it up like last time.
Yui: right! you are right! I'll see you guys later, take care until then.
she kissed each mice' head and left.
Ayato: what took you so long!? yours truly is starving!
Yui: I'm sorry stepmother, this won't happen again.
Ayato: you said that last time too!
Laito: now now mother, please let it be. poor Cinderella needs her beauty sleep too. After all, I'm pretty sure you won't want an ugly little thing with dark circles lurking around the house like a ghost while doing her chores. it'll be unsightly.
Kanato: as much as I hate her for making me and teddy wait, I agree with laito. it'll be really unpleasant to watch her like that. her pretty average looks are the only thing that is keeping me sane as I watch her face everyday while walking around the house. she's already ugly, don't make it worse.
Ayato: tch, you two. fine, you are spared this time on my daughters' request. but now… you have already wasted our precious time, go make the breakfast and, I don't think I need to repeat about your daily chores.
Yui: understood.
she bowed her head to them like a daily routine and went to the kitchen to make breakfast.
later during the meal, while she was serving their breakfast something in their conversation perked her up
Ayato: we have received an invitation from our monarch for the prestigious royal ball that is going to be held in five days. it is rumored that the prince is looking for a wife through this occasion and will make her his queen after taking over the throne.
Laito: ah that sounds so wonderful! but why throw a ball when he can marry a very influential family and also, in the future he is destined to marry a lot of women to stabilize his kingdom. ah~ I really wanted to become his one and only.
Kanato: try getting out of your genius fantasies and assumptions, he'll never marry someone like you even if he wants to keep only one wife. I'm more suitable. me and teddy. right teddy?
Ayato: that's the thing. the current prince only wants to have one wife on his side who'll help him run the kingdom through her ideas and opinions too and not just influence.
Laito: hmmm isn't the king, the current prince's older brother who is still single and healthy, still ruling the kingdom. why will they look for a wife for the prince and not the king?
Ayato: dunno, probably not interested in marriages. and about the prince, he doesn't look like he has any intention to take over the kingdom but who knows what goes around in politics. definitely why they are looking for a wife for him due to this.
Laito: awww man, I thought if not prince then I could get a chance with the king as a backup but looks like I'll have to rely on my natural beauty and talent to press my presence into the prince's heart.
Kanato: gross.
Yui: can I join the ball too? I promise I'll complete all the chores! I'll clean the house to it's finest, laundry your clothes, iron them, and make your favorite foods. Everything.
The three's eyes widened at her request.
Kanato: what made you think, a mere incompetent average mediocre women like you can attend with us—!
Ayato: Kanato. it's alright.
the stepmother stopped her youngest child's tantrum and turned to Yui with an evil smile.
Ayato: fine. I'll let you join us-
Kanato & Laito: mother!
Ayato: shush. I'm still speaking. so Yui, you can join us… only if you complete all the listed chores I give you everyday.
Yui: that's alright with me! thank you!
Ayato: don't thank me so soon. you even have not started working on the chores yet.
the evil smile just grew wider. but Yui chose to ignore it and left the dining area to start preparing for her chores.
Laito: mother?
Ayato: you guys are worrying too much, she doesn't even have proper clothes except those rags. and to think about going to the ball without a proper dress? fufu she'll either be kicked out or made a laughing stock. but I'm pretty sure she won't be even able to step out of this house, as that much of the task and chores will be given to her from me.
on the corner, the three mice were watching the whole ordeal and Yuma just grew angry at the insolent behavior of these people towards Yui and her pure wish & will to go to the ball.
Yuma: those damn bastards- that stepmother is definitely planning something evil. the wickedness is in the air, I can't breathe anymore ugh!
Azusa: Ruki… we need to protect her and help her prepare for the ball.
Ruki: that's right! let's have a talk with her first and see what she is planning for the ball.
the three mice left the scene and went to their Yui.
Yuma: Yui! Yui! what are your plans for the ball?
Yui: ..! you guys know?
Ruki: of course we do, we are mice. our ears are everywhere.
Yui: oh I see. Well I of course don't have a dress so I'm planning to make one, I still have one of my mother's dresses which I can try to remake using various accessories and jewels.
Ruki: is that the pink one you showed a long time ago?
Yui: yes that's the one.
Yuma: then we'll help you remake it! you know those smelly wicked people are definitely planning something unpleasant and difficult for you.
Yui: Shush Yuma, that's not how you talk about people, especially behind their backs. and I'll really appreciate your guys' help my sweet adorable mice.
She rubbed their heads and ruffled around their chin to gesture her gratitude.
the three of them purred.
Now Yui was busy doing all her listed difficult and nasty chores. her stepmother really didn't want her to come so badly that she stooped so low in giving chores.
While on the other hand, the mice called for the birds and explained to them about the situation. Upon hearing this, the birds whistled and called more of their friends from the forest behind the house and with this, all of them proceeded to make a dress for Yui, so beautiful that even the prince will not be able to get up after falling from looking at her. not from the floor, not from his affection.
Days passed and the time for the ball was here. But Yui didn't look very excited as in the past few days, her stepmother really gave her so many tasks that she didn't even get the time to touch her mother's dress. The moment she'll complete those tasks and go to her room in the attic, she'll fall on the bed and sleep due to all the tiredness.
Yui:....! huh! How is this-!
Yuma • Azusa • Ruki • animals: surprise!
Yui was in awe and in tears as she saw the most beautiful dress she has ever seen in her whole life. These animals really remade the old dress into something new with their tiny hands, paws and beaks. She repeatedly thanked them as she stepped forward and took the dress to try it out.
Yuma: You look gorgeous!
Azusa: pretty!
Ruki: As expected, my imagination was on point.
Yui: you guys are really really adorable! I love you so much.
*church bell rings from afar*
Yui: oh no! it's almost time for the ball, I'm leaving. love you guys.
Ruki: we'll escort you out.
Yui and her companions moved to the door just when the stepmother and the stepsisters were about to leave.
Yui: wait, I'm coming too!
The three of them turned around and looked enraged at her beautiful sight.
blinded by jealousy, the sisters tore Yui's dress saying the jewels on her dress resemble their belongings as the mother just watched.
Yui: … why?
she was on the brink of tears.
Ayato: just cause'.
with that they left.
finally the tears poured from her eyes, she didn't want to cry in front of them to fuel their enjoyment more, and ran away from the scene.
the mice followed her, angry yet they couldn't do anything. if only they were human. if only.. if only… if only…
*magical noises*
???: I hear desperate wishes.
mice: !!!
Yui, who was crying on the bench, suddenly looked up and saw a handsome black haired man with pale magenta eyes wearing glasses in a…. blue gown?
Yui: you are?
???: Reiji. Your fairy godmother.
Yui: …
Reiji: what?
Yui: I think I'm hallucinating due to crying too much.
Reiji: and what is that supposed to mean?
Yui: aren't fairy godmothers females?
Reiji: ….
Yui: ….
Reiji: are you…
Yui: ?
Reiji: Are you doubting my profession? Do you know how hard it is to work in this profession? The ethics and norms says nothing about specific gender in this field. What is this gender discrimination!? Can't believe in this time and era, there will be people who'll show such impudent and narrow minded thinking. I knew it, I was born in the wrong generation.
Yui never expected that her simple question would end up with her getting a whole lecture.
Reiji: good grief *sigh* you are helpless.
Yui: isn't that why you are here?
Reiji: now miss mam, I think you don't know how the fairy godmother system works. We-
Yui: another one. here we go (╥▽╥)
Yui: okay okay, I understand.
Reiji: you better.
Yui: So why are you here?
Reiji: to help you out of course. I heard your deepest desires and wishes from far away. and as a compassionate person* I'm here to fulfill your dreams.
*compassionate person X
because it is my profession. ✓
Yui: really? but how?
Reiji: We can start with that dress of yours.
Reiji took out a white wand from his sleeves as he performed the spell bibidi babidi boo and transformed Yui's dress into a beautiful sparkly silver gown with glass heels while also styling her hair with jewels and sparkles.
Yui: oh my gosh! you are amazing.
Reiji: keke, of course. I'm an expert in my profession, as expected of me. hmm but there's still something amiss.
Yui: how am I supposed to go to the ball? on heels?
Reiji: right! that was what it was missing.
Reiji danced his wand again as he turned a full grown pumpkin, from the corner, into a carriage.
Reiji: perfect. now we are ready.
Yui: who is going to drive it?
Reiji: those three mice glaring at me from the start.
Yui turned at the direction of Reiji's stare and saw her companions glaring daggers. But such thing was completely normal for Reiji as he danced his wand again and turned the mice into humans.
*poof*
Azusa: we are…
Ruki: humans now.
Reiji: for now. Listen to me and remember one thing very carefully, once the clock strikes midnight, my spell will be lifted and everything will be turned back to how it was i.e. your torn dress, pumpkin, mice, everything and everyone.
Yui: I understand, thank you so much.
Yuma: ugh this body is tall, why am I the only one like this!?
Yui: if only you would have done some good deeds.
Yui joked around repeating Yuma's comment from that day and the latter in turn grew more furious.
Reiji: bickering for later. the ball is starting soon. now if you don't want my precious energy and stamina I invested in you to go to waste. Please.
Yui: wait! what if my stepmother and stepsisters recognize me!? it'll be over for me.
Reiji: ah that's true, let me cast another enchanting spell on you which will act like an illusion.
he danced his wand again.
Reiji double checked and made sure everything is at point and now
he pointed at the carriage door's direction, impatient for them to leave. He had to go fill in his reports as early as possible to get some increment.
The three mice, now humans, discussed something among themselves and decided that Ruki & Azusa will be the escorts while Yuma will be the driver.
before Yuma could argue more, Yui looked at him with hopeful eyes and he wasn't able to say anything.
Without anymore further ado, they left for the ball.
———————x
Subaru: tch. I'm not dealing with this nonsense anymore!
Inside the ballroom, Subaru was starting to get frustrated in the upper room, where royals watch the people from above.
Just a few hours ago, Shu, his older brother, the current king, lazily barged into his room and dropped the bomb that the ball was actually being held to find a bride for him. Until now he was just kept in the dark and was only told that a royal ball will be held for political purposes and so he assumed that it must be something to do with his king position but now this… this was frustrating.
All he could see was disgusting coaxing of females and the nobles trying to get their daughter with the prince. It got worse when suddenly a maiden with reddish brown hair and green eyes winked at him and 'nfu'-ed at him. Right now Subaru was running away from that maiden and successfully managed to ditch him.
Subaru sighed as took in the familiar scenario of the grand corridors of this spacious castle.
Subaru: tch. well now that I'm here, might as well roam around and cool myself down until that brother of mine and his followers drag me into this whole set-up mess again.
Subaru walked but tensed up when he saw a beautiful gown.
Subaru: not another one
He looked around to find a hiding spot until..
Subaru: …..!
Subaru: she is ethereal
no no no, that shouldn't change his decision as he has already seen some beautiful/pretty faces tonight trying to suck him up, be it by their own will or their family's will.
he shouldn't stop himself just because of an ethereal looking woman. but it was too late, she already saw him.
???: uhm hello? uh, do you know the direction of the ballroom? I'm kind of lost here.
It looks like she didn't recognise, good for him. But sooner she might if someone from palace suddenly shows up and reveals his identity because of the formalities.
Subaru: You are?
Yui: oh… uh I was supposed to attend the ball with my family but due to cho— circumstances I wasn't able to depart with them on time.
She really let herself be open around and introduce herself without any hesitation. such a vulnerable prey.
Subaru: let me do the honor and take you.
Yui: you will? thank you!
the little rabbit has fallen into the hands of a beast.
Yui: oh right! what is your name? Need to know your name to express my gratitude later for your each and every help.
Subaru: Subaru.
Yui: I see…
Subaru didn't say his full name because he didn't want his cover to be lifted, at least not yet especially when he gets to see her such beautiful smile making her eyes shape into alluring crescents.
He silently took her to the ballroom, so that people wouldn't notice him and expose him.
Yui came back to her senses from her daze of taking in the marvelous interior of the palace when she realized that Subaru had taken her to the dance floor and both of them were waltzing now.
Yui: S-subaru-kun!?
Subaru: shh.
Yui blushes as she finally takes in his appearance illuminated by the golden lights of the ball room and how dazzling he looked with that silver pink hair and his scarlet eyes.
Subaru wanted to quietly enjoy his moment with this ethereal girl he just met. He wanted to know more about her. He wanted to make her his own. He was intrigued. her soft expressions, her soft voice, her smile, her vulnerability, everything. He wanted to know them deeply.
As Subaru and Yui were enjoying their peaceful dance with love filled eyes looking into each other with the desire to get to know each other more, Yui's stepmother and stepsisters were seen from afar as Ayato looked carefully and started to doubt how much the girl dancing with the prince looked familiar.
Ayato: No it can't be her, she doesn't even have a dress and the one she has we destroyed it. must be some other girl looking like her.
Meanwhile Shu watched the scene in front of him unfold and sighs following with a lazy but genuine smile, glad that his younger brother finally found someone for him. With Subaru's past and his mental health condition this past few weeks, Shu decided to look for someone who'll help his brother out.
Time passed and Yui and Subaru were at the balcony at the end of the ballroom to get some fresh air and get to each other. the more they talked to each other, the more they found each other falling for the other person. At first it was a little awkward so they started with random small talks and in between Subaru finally revealed his true identity. Yui was shocked and tried to bow curtly as she started being formal but Subaru stopped her.
He wanted to spend time with her as a normal person.
Has it been an hour or two since they started talking? Subaru doesn't know and doesn't care, the only thing that matters to him is the girl in front of him. At first he just wanted to see what she was capable of when she so openly left herself in his care, a beast's care. but now, there's more to it.
He stepped forward and circles his arm around her waist pulling her closer. Yui squeaked at his sudden movement. Shy, she asked him what he was doing but instead of a reply she was met with a closer image of his face and realized their lips were getting closer. He didn't wait or hesitate as he landed a kiss on her lips in his daze of watching her intensely.
At first Yui didn't know what to do as her heart and mind were saying different things. In the end she kissed him back, entangling her hands in his soft hair.
it went on for a few minutes as each second Subaru would try pulling himself closer to her or pulling Yui closer to him to deepen the kiss.
Yui slowly opened her eyes to try parting with him to catch a breath but her eyes flew open when her gaze fell on the watch behind Subaru.
Yui: shoot! it's going to be midnight in 10 minutes.
Yui's slowly pushed Subaru away who looked surprised.
Yui: I'm sorry, but I need to go, it's getting late.
Subaru: it's alright, I'll order my people to drop you at your home so it won't matter.
Yui: no! i mean it's alright, i won't want to trouble you, your high-
Subaru: I told you to drop the formalities. and, it's not troublesome.
what should she do? if she stays here any longer her illusionary dress and everything will be exposed and she is worried if the connection they have until now, will it disappear if Subaru sees her true form?
Yui apologizes again as she slowly gets out of Subaru's grip and runs for the main gate to leave. Subaru shouted for her to wait for him and followed after her. Yui was rushing and rushing when suddenly Subaru caught her hand stopping her in her tracks at the stairs of the main gate.
Yui looked at the watch, terrified she gently held his hand and got her hand out and rushed again.a pologizing to him while running away.
and also, dropping one of her glass shoes on the stairs on the way. she did stop in her tracks to go above and pick it up but decided not to as the watch ticked over and over again in her ears, like a warning.
Subaru: wait! you never told me your name!
subaru cried out, but it was already too late as Yui had already disappeared, only her forgotten glass show left behind. picking it up, Subaru decided to find the girl no matter what. his determination through the roof.
Next morning, Subaru's bestie, Kou visited him after hearing about the rumors of his dearest friend being seen with a girl and looking at her with love filled eyes.
Subaru was already frustrated at Kou's arrival but started gritting his teeth at the non-stop blabber and teasing of the latter man in front of him.
Kou: aww c'mon man, you can't keep your bestie in the dark!
Subaru: who are you calling your friend!? i don't ever remember having such a relationship with you!
Kou: Hey Subaru-kun! you hurt me. I have been your reading partner since we were ten.
Subaru ignored Kou's annoying chatter, as he gazed at the glass show in his hand. oh how so badly he wanted to find her and keep her to himself. He swore he wouldn't let her get out of his grip anymore.
…!?
was he becoming possesive? even Subaru was shocked at his thoughts.
Shu: stop looking at it like that. The girl won't magically appear out of nowhere if you keep glaring at it.
Shu has entered the room.
Shu: I'll help you find her.
He gestures his hand at three men behind him to take the shoes and leave for the town to find the girl whose foot fits in the shoe.
Subaru recognised the three men as Shu's loyal followers from the start and also his reading partners. Kino, Shin and Carla.
Thus, he let the shoe go because he trusted in their methods and resources.
Kino: just wait for us~
Kino winked at Subaru, and Shin sighed complaining about the enthusiasm.
Shin: how are you guys so sure that this shoe will only fit one lady? There can be many people.
Subaru: the size of the shoe.. is very small. Kou has the smallest shoe size among us all and this shoe is even smaller than that, making it a very rare case.
Kou: Subaru stop exposing me!
Subaru ignored his friend's glaring as Carla nodded, understanding something.
Carla: in other words, the one whose foot glides in this shoe swiftly is the true owner.
Subaru: yes.
and so began the search for the girl that has mesmerized the prince of the kingdom and it didn't take long for the rumors to reach every household. even where Yui lives.
Ayato was in Yui's room, suspicious. Totally suspicious. No matter how much he thinks about it, the girl he saw yesterday doesn't sit right with him as a stranger. he looked around her room, and finally found it. the glass shoe! under her bed.
Ayato: che, I knew it. that cunning fox.
at the same time, Yui entered the room to make sure her glass slipper was still there as the people from the palace were coming & this was her chance to finally meet Subaru again. but the moment she saw Ayato, she was on alert. but it was too late as Ayato smirked while dancing the glass shoe in his hand.
Yui tensed as she stepped forward to take it form Ayato's hand but the latter just extended his hand above and because of the height difference Yui was left helpless.
Ayato: very smart huh? trying to get the prince to you. How did you do it? the dress? how did you reach there when it was already too late to reach in time by walking?
Yui remained silent.
Ayato: no answer huh? fine, for such disrespect, you'll be locked in your room for the meantime.
Yui: no you can't do that!
Ayato: Oh I can, just watch me. those people from the palace will never be able to find you.
with that ayato rushed and locked the door, trapping Yui in.
Ayato: Laito! Kanato! prepare yourselves, the prince is coming! you guys must do whatever you can to get the shoe fit your foot.
Laito • Kanato: Yes, mother.
Meanwhile, trapped Yui cries on the edge of her bed as she remembers how on the way back, it was already midnight and on the way back everything turned back to how it was, just like Reiji said.
except that one glass slipper on her feet still remaining intact.
how? was it because they were seperated? at first Yui was scared that the moment midnight hits the shoe under Subaru's care will turn back to normal and he will start doubting her, making them never meet again. but that wasn't the case as the shoes still remain as how they were.
No matter how much Yui thought it over, nothing explained the logic behind the shoes remaining the same. but at the same time, this gave her hope to meet him again. to meet Subaru again.
the mice notices this and planned to free Yui from the room, but how?
suddenly Ruki perks up as he comes up with a plan to take the key from Ayato's pocket.
The time was here, the people from the palace were here. and… the Prince was also along with them?
Carla: are you three the only people here?
Ayato: yes.
Carla: alright then.
the shoe fitting trial was starting, after going house to house and no one fitting the shoe, this was the only last house left. Subaru was starting to get impatient but he was determined to find her even if she turns out to be from another kingdom.
Meanwhile the mice parted themselves as Azusa went to steal the glass shoes from Ayato's locker. All three of them were glad to be mice as they can use their origin skills to help Yui out.
While Ruki and Yuma slowly approached Ayato and through tricks managed to get the key.
before ayato could notice it was too late, Ruki and Yuma already left and so did Azusa successfully managed to get the glass slipper.
the commotion here was too noisy for him to notice sooner.
Kino: god we don't even need to try the fitting here, it's obvious it won't fit.
Kino cried out the moment he sees the difference in the the glass shoe and the feet of laito.
Ignoring him, Laito still tried it out but as Kino said, it was really really big, no matter how much he tried to fit it in.
Shin: you are going to break it!
Kanato: leave it you pervert! I'll try!
Kanato pushed Laito off the chair and sat himself down, ready to try out the shoe.
Shin: shortie stop! even though you are smaller than him, you are also really big for the glass shoe!
Kanato: who are you calling shortie! WHO ARE YOU—
Ayato: ahem.
Ayato hushed Kanato as the prince was in the room. they cannot take any risk.
On the other hand the three mice finally freed Yui and gave her shoe back.
Yui hurried out and reached downstairs just when the palace people were about to leave.
Yui: wait, I'm here!
they turned back at the newcomer.
Subaru: you said you guys were only three!?
Subaru looks at the girl and the moment he sees her, he senses her. it's her! he rushed to her who was still running down the stairs and caught her in his arms in the form of a hug.
He didn't need that stupid shoe fitting trial to know if the girl he spent last night talking with is her or not. It's her. He can feel it. the warmth, the expressions, the tone. It's her!
Yui hugs him back for few seconds before pushing his shoulder gently to present the glass slipper. he other pair.
Shin: that shoe!
Ayato: Your highness, please listen to this subject. She is nothing but just a mere maid. There's no way she can be involved in matters like prestigious balls. I have no idea how she got that pair of shoe.
Carla: It doesn't matter who she is. you defied the orders, and on top of that lied to his highness. This matter won't go unnoticed and will be reported to the King immediately. Shin.
Shin: on my way ~
Yui: wait! please don't.
Kino: huh? are you saying?
Yui: yes. even though they, well they didn't treat me rightfully, I still don't want to become the reason for their demise. No matter what, everybody deserves a second chance.
Shin: hehe, you guys will be grateful for your life.
Kino snatched the shoes from Kanato's hands and gave it to Subaru.
and after taking the pair of shoes from both Yui and kino, the silver haired man bent down on his one knee and swiftly lifted Yui's feet one by one to slide the shoes.
they fit!
Subaru couldn't be any happier. she was finally his.
Yui hugged Subaru and both of them merrily smiled & laughed to be with each other again.
the glass shoes suddenly starts glowing and turns into dust. that dust soon forms a figure of a beautiful man who introduces himself as karlheinz and says
Karlheinz: Adam and Eve have been found in this universe too, my job is done.
And then disappears again by forming into dust before anyone could say anything.
Shin: what the hell!? what was that just now!? I have heard about fairies, but that was one scary and creepy one, if he was even one.
Kino • Carla: Adam and Eve?
Yui: is that why the shoes remained intact till the end even when the fairy godmother Reiji's spell was lifted at midnight?
even though the mystery about the shoes is solved, the more Yui thinks about it, the creepier it gets, especially how she wore those shoes all the time during the ball and when she was with Subaru…
Yui: don't tell me he witnessed everything…
Subaru realized what Yui was talking about but he can't also fall in the mood. he lifted her up as he gave the most genuine bright smile.
Subaru: Yui will you marry me?
Yui was surprised at the sudden proposal and cried the tears of happiness as she repeatedly said yes to him.
————————x
The wedding bells rang as Subaru and Yui exited the chapel after completing their wedding vows. everyone in the town came to pay their respects and give blessings to the newly married couple. the prince and the princess. The mice were throwing petals from the basket as they watched their Yui finally being happy.
Subaru lifted Yui in the bridal style, causing her to become shy for the nth time and ofc it doesn't goes unnoticed by Subaru.
Subaru: hehe, you should get used to such stuff now because I'll be loving you seven days a week. monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday, sunday. 24/7.
Yui blushes more as Subaru walks down the stairs and enters the carriage.
He sets Yui down and leaned in to kiss her as curtains fell.

"I could blow it up right now, guys. We could blow it up right now and start this war. Oh, I so want to."
It's not that people mistook Grian as a catalyst for war, but for Cub, he found himself thriving during the Civil War. Vex magic had never been this potent, and not just because of the vast ravine of Vex magic crystals that had been found under the ConCorp complex. Chaos, bloodshed, carnage, it all filled Cub's dreams, as did the happy screaming of the Vex as war came closer.
The problem was that the Hermits weren't quite as eager for war as Cub was, and without Scar around to, well, not temper his more stupid and risky ideas, but to at least be a sounding board, Cub went a little mad as the two teams built their bases and then did nothing. There were traps, there was psychological warfare, there were attempts to play one team against the other. As a neutral party only interested in war profitteering, Cub was just in it for the diamonds and the chaos. It was in ConCorp's interest to start the war, after all! ConCorp doesn't start ceasefires, they end them. And Cub was determined to end this one.
The Hermits looked like tiny mice circling the flag as they gathered around it. Cub was hiding above them on a drone, though given how high up he was, he probably didn't need to be invisible. Still, better to take every precaution. And someone had placed TNT on the flag, and his bow fingers were itching to loose an arrow. He could hit it from here. He could blow that flag up. They'd blame each other. Conflict would ensue!
God, it was so tempting. But he had to wait, heart pounding in his chest, as he counted Hermits, trying to determine when they had all arrived. It was so close, he was so close to the war he wanted. He coupled his comms unit into the drone's audio feed so he was able to listen in to their conversation without being present. He didn't want them to know he was here, that would ruin everything.
"So guys, I'm, I'm having second thoughts about this, you know. Because I dunno about you, but I've spent a lot of time building up this base. This is like a whole season's worth of work we've put in here, so you know, is it worth it? Dunno if I want to do this," Grian said, and his words did nothing to calm Cub's nerves.
"You're afraid I'm gonna blow holes in it with my ghast cannon!" Impulse jeered.
Grian's terrified 'yes!' in reply didn't help. God, Cub wanted to blow that flag up right now. Let the war begin already! None of these second thoughts. No walking back now. They'd built their bases. They'd built their weapons. They'd set traps and found a battlefield and done more than enough sabre-rattling for Cub's liking. The only thing missing was bloodshed. The battlefield was crying out for blood. Let the Hermits bleed for each other, let the chaos reign! The Vex would have this war one way or another!
"Okay, this is gonna be a very delicate procedure guys, I think we gotta bomb 'em, we gotta bomb 'em," Cub decided, having had enough of their back and forth taunting.
He looked down through the wings of the drone, trying to find the best place to bomb. "'k, potion check, potion check," he muttered to himself, making sure he had enough time left, which he did. "We're good, we're good."
There were a few spots between the wings of the drone where the flag would be easily hittable from his position. If not a bow, some TNT might also do the trick if he timed it right. And he did have some TNT and a flint and steel at hand. He just had to get the aim and the timing right.
"Alright, this is good, this is good, people are trash-talking, this is fantastic! Yep, yep, this is it, this is the moment! They're gonna blame each other! They're gonna blame each other!"
He started placing TNT around the drone, and lit it, sending it down on them as he flew away from it, waiting to see the carnage. Vex magic was flooding through his body as the deaths came in, god this was glorious. He could taste a little blood on his tongue. Now the true carnage could begin!
Welsknight was blown up by cubfan135 MumboJumbo was blown up by cubfan135 Tango was blown up by cubfan135
"There we go, there we go, there we go! We got 'em! We got 'em! Let's get out of here! Let's get out of here! There we go! There we go! Perfect! Perfect!"
Cub laughed as he moved away from them, the slow falling potion allowing him to get away without using rockets which would have given his position away. He landed some distance away, close enough to see what was unfolding.
"Shots fired! So many shots fired!" Cleo could be heard saying over the cries of shock and accusations.
"We did it, guys! We did it, we did it!"
Nothing felt better than this, seeing them all scatter and blame each other. Sure, a drone had been sacrified, but it was for the greater good, especially once the ghast cannon fired up. The G Team's lawn was on fire, zombies were flooding into the ghast cannon's grounds, chaos took hold as both teams finally fell into conflict. Cub was happy, the Vex were singing, this is what it's all about, baby!

Thoughts on Rings of Power Episode 07 (spoilers) - Part 1
Not going to lie, I’m not sure I’m ready for this episode.
Aw, Brimby with his cup of tea, enjoying a nice, peaceful morning…
“Hello, Mr. Mouse.” :3 I love how Celebrimbor can range from arrogant and proud to adorable
“Have you fallen?” “You know how forgetful you can be.” “I trust you are not feeling overwhelmed again.” Fuck you, Sauron, you gaslighting, abusive ass
Although Sauron seems genuinely happy when Celebrimbor thanked him.
“When the world is still…” so Celebrimbor is just an autistic gay who wants to make things all day. I understand that feeling completely.
Also I genuinely believe Sauron will regret the end of his partnership with Celebrimbor (Celebrimbor, not so much, haha)
Love, love, love the transition from peaceful Celebrimbor world to reality, although I would have liked a better passage of time because apparently the city has been under siege for weeks?
“Valar bless you, my lord” to Sauron. XD
Also fuck you, Sauron, for making Celebrimbor sound like a feeble minded old man. -_-
“Proven your quality” and my mind immediately went to Denethor and poor Faramir.
So, my dumb ass was like, ‘wait are the Orcs really going to build a dam?” And Adar’s like, nope, just going to throw a shit ton of rocks at this mountain face until it crumbles and dams the river.
This is why I’m not an engineer and he was in his past life XD
I love how Celebrimbor can ignore explosions, screams, and everything else going on outside, but the mouse gave the whole thing away
Do you think Celebrimbor raised mice as a child?
And he was very smart to mark the candle to see if it actually changed
And King Durin III is being an asshat as usual
Fucking love that Disa and Durin are defending the mind all by themselves. Such bad asses
And, YES, DISA GETS TO HOLD AN AXE IN THIS EPISODE
Yay, Narvi!
“This particular elf has been banished from all dwarven lands” Durin IV: YES!!! THIS IS THE BEST NEWS I’VE HEARD IN WHAT FEELS LIKE A CENTURY!”
More Durin-Elrond bromance!
“Tidal-hared, flowery tongue, flagpole” XD
“I’m about to overthrow my father. What have you got?” XD
I love the pain in Elrond’s face as he realizes what overthrowing Durin III must cost Durin IV and how impossible his ask for Durin’s army really is
That one Orc LOVES his life beating the war drums haha
Also, can I just say the Orcs have been incredible this season? Love the practical effects and their different personalities we’ve been able to get glimpses of throughout the season
The Ravager, a combination of Grond and that one orc from Two Towers with the bombs
Oh my god this entire conversation between Celebrimbor and Sauron about the fucking mouse XD Pure gold
Love how anxious and yet proud Celebrimbor looks when he points the pattern out to Sauron
“Captivating.” XD
It must kill Sauron as Celebrimbor tears apart his “perfect” illusion
Yeah, Celebrimbor is fighting back!
LOVE the eye twitch when Celebrimbor calls Sauron out on his bullshit
Poor Celebrimbor once he realizes what is actually happening to his city.
The tears. The scream. My God give Charles Edwards ALL THE AWARDS!
Sauron’s fucking blood!!!
“True creation requires sacrifice.” Given what we know about Sauron, that line is probably when he first fell in love with Celebrimbor
I love how I know Celebrimbor is telling the truth, but he just sounds crazy when talking to Mirdania
I don’t really blame Mirdania for being like, “uh, ok, grandpa, go back to bed now.”
This whole scene is soooo painful. Poor Brimby. No one believes him.
“Get you back where you belong” and then over the wall Mirdania goes. ☹
Elrond on a horse!!!
Elf Charge!
So, was Gil-Galad not even invited to Adar’s tent? XD He is High King after all and he’s…somewhere on the battlefield.
Love the contrast between the Elves bathed in light and the Orcs covered in darkness
How in Valar’s name did they halt that charge?!
I’ve been wanting this Adar-Elrond showdown for a while!
Yes, Elrond, it would be foolish to bring the ring with you -_-
Elrond’s faith in Celebrimbor. So pure
Melian! A Melian reference!
Also, Adar just likes to flirt with all his prisoners, huh?
Ooo Elrond getting into the Orc’s heads.
This is why Adar is such an amazing and tragic character. He wants to desperately protect his children in a world that wants to destroy them and then Sauron comes back and he knows Sauron will reclaim what he feels is “rightfully” his, so he has to sacrifice more and more of his children to defeat a foe he thought long defeated and even though it would make sense for the Orcs and Elves to work together, they can’t because of personal bias, misconceptions, and downright racism.
I absolutely adore how this episode in particular doesn’t glorify war. Instead, it points out how fucking stupid this battle actually is. Adar and Gil-Galad could ride into Eregion together and save Celebrimbor and defeat Sauron, but because the Elves will not give a homeland to the Orcs and Adar knows he can’t trust the Elves, they’ll just slaughter each other while Sauron gets what he wants
That kiss is such a Rick O’Connell, “Well I was about to be hanged. It seemed like a good idea at the time” moment. You can see poor Elrond’s brain short circuit with the pressure he is under, and he just does the first thing that pops into his head and Galadriel’s face XD The “there are a hundred and one different ways you could have given me this brooch and that’s the one you go with?” look
Durin’s war speech! No notes. Fucking amazing
Poor Brimby changed to his desk ☹
Durin the IV the king Khazad Dum needs and deserves
So old king Durin has completely lost it, huh?
Ove that horses kick as much ass as their owners in this series
I’ve been dying to see Elrond fight for soooooo long. Robert does an amazing job showing the warrior side of Elrond
Oh no the horse! That’s right, Elrond, kick that Orc’s ass!
Love that Elrond takes a moment to say goodbye to his horse. So sweet and sad.
“You told us you loved us” “With all that is left of my heart” literally sobbing at this exchange. Poor, poor Adar. He knows in his heart that he has lost the love of his children, but if he can kill Sauron and free them forever, then it’s worth it. ☹

In the mood for some secret relationship allurance.
When they get together after some intervention from the mice—the tiniest wingmen you ever did see—they don’t even mean to keep it secret, they just. Don’t make a big deal about it. Because this is a them thing, and they’re content with that. They’re not even very secret about it and it’s a wonder no one catches them kissing in the castle halls. But Lance is his normal enamoured-with-Allura self, dating her has not changed that, and they’ve been subtly gravitating towards each other since long before they made things official. So them continuously opting to sit next to each other, hands intertwining beneath the table, slipping into each other’s room at night for face masks, it all goes unnoticed. Except by Coran because Lance let it slip when he came to him asking about ideas for a meaningful ‘month-aversary’ gift. It had taken a moment for protective father mode to disengage, and a few words from Allura, but Coran is pretty supportive (and Coran maaay have a soft spot for Lance out of all of the paladins, not that he’s picking favourites or anything).
So here they are. At some fancy ball-like event to improve diplomatic relations, each of the paladins dressed in whatever altean formalwear Coran and Allura could pull up out of the castle ship’s storage. Even with several washes, the outfits are still a bit musty smelling, but are otherwise in pretty good condition for 10,000 decaphoeb old clothes (both the material, and the airtight storage helping with that). And Allura is starting to believe this was a terrible, terrible, terrible idea, oh so incredibly distracted by Lance in altean formalwear. Maybe he doesn’t have the ears, but it suits him well, blue quite simply his colour. In fact, she’s starting to wonder what she even found hideous about his ears when first they met.
“You look beautiful,” he whispers to her, something shy in his smile. He looks at her with the utmost adoration, such an open expression that sends a cosy wave of warmth through her heart. Allura never wants to lose this feeling, never wants to lose him.
She hopes, this once, the universe will be kind.
“So do you,” she whispers back, watching as red begins to lightly dust his cheeks, his eyes widening.
“You think I—” He grins, boyish and giddy. “Holy crow. Sweet. Think I can keep the suit when this is all over?”
Again, a terrible, terrible, terrible idea. And yet. “Well I hardly see this being our last event.”
They spend the vast majority of the night away from each other, never far, but always caught up in conversation with the people of Cobraqua—their reptilian-skinned hosts for this evening—many curious about the exploits of Voltron, and some, more well versed in diplomacy, wanting to know what being a part of the coalition would mean for their home. Though he clearly hasn’t had the thousands of lessons of etiquette that have been drilled into Allura’s brain through the castle’s somewhat violent projections, Lance has always been good with people. An event like this brings that out in him.
So good, in fact, that the Cobraquelien Prince Bokar decides to make an announcement in the midst of the festivities.
“Father,” he says, directed at the planet’s king. “I believe it is in our best interest to accept their offer and join the coalition.”
And for that, Allura is thankful. The next part, less so.
“And you, paladins. Allow me to thank you for protecting our planet with the most prestigious gift my people can offer. If I may.”
He motions to one of the service staff who presses a small, black box into his hand. The prince clicks it open, revealing what from this distance appears to be some kind of ornamental trinket, a blue sapphire sitting at its centre.
“Blue paladin, I extend my hand to you, and ask that we bind our lives together with a romantic union.”
Now, it’s not like Allura is unfamiliar with being proposed to, once a princess of a planet of diplomats. A future throne to a planet with that much influence was enticing to many, despite it being common knowledge those of her lineage often found partnership with other alteans, and so it wasn’t unknown for nobles to nudge suitors her way during visits with her father. Often, she was left unimpressed, none of them matching up to the prince—or princess—her inner romantic heart had envisioned, captivated by the idea of a love so true, so magical, she’d fall for them the moment they met eyes.
But, just like her mother, she had fallen for someone who wasn’t a prince at all. Not even close.
No love at first sight.
Just Lance being Lance, growing into a person she can trust with her life, who’s so genuine with his faith in her that she knows he feels the same.
And somehow, despite such grandeur fantasies of love, what her and Lance have rests so dearly in her chest she would never have it any other way.
(One quintant, she thinks. One quintant she’ll be the one doing the proposing, when the war is won, and their future assured.
And maybe this can end better than any dream).
So, no. It’s not that Allura is unfamiliar with being proposed to, back then and even now, still, with Lotor having tried talking her into a union of them both.
But this other prince springs this upon her so suddenly, no lead up, that it comes as a shock, putting a dent in her diplomatic persona for just enough time that Lance reacts first, coming to stand defensively at her side like a paladin in shining armour. A very jealous paladin in shining armour.
As if he has anything to worry about.
“Woah, woah! Nu-uh buddy. You can’t marry Allura!”
Off to the side, she hears Pidge snickering. “Oh here we go again.”
“Seconded!” declares Coran, popping up out of absolutely nowhere to stand next to Lance. “As the Princess’ primary guardian, I object! I object I say! … Not that I mean any disrespect to you, Prince Bokar, but I can’t hand Allura over to someone without any notarised certificates of commendation,” Coran pauses, and looks at the prince with renewed interest. “Actually, as a prince, do you have any certificates?”
“Coran,” says Allura in time with a similar protest from Lance.
“Yes, right! Sorry. I just thought it was worth an ask.” And to the prince, Coran says, “Not that it would matter if you did, of course. I cannot in good conscience approve when the princess is already being courted.”
“She is?” asks Shiro. He turns to her. “Is this true, Princess?”
“Yes that’s… correct,” Allura says, realising that this is the first time the matter of her and Lance’s relationship has been brought up in front of the other paladins. “I apologise, Prince Bokar, but I will have to decline your proposal.”
“I knew it!” she hears Hunk say to Pidge, “Her and Lotor really are a thing!”
Allura inwardly winces at the name. She knows they must keep a working relationship with Prince Lotor, but they’ll never become anything more than that. There’s something about the way he speaks, almost as if it’s exactly what you want to hear, charmed words a distraction from his real goal. She may have had a passing attraction, but was all there was to it.
“That’s not…” she tries, only to catch sight of Lance and his pouting face. Allura stifles a laugh.
“I believe there has been a misunderstanding,” says Bokar, this baffled look on his face as he stares Lance up and down. “You’re in blue. Are you not the blue paladin?”
Oh?
Oh?
Lance blinks, his face going blank. He opens his mouth as if to speak, and leaves it like that, speechless, as if trying to catch a Jartulio fly in there, only nothing is caught, and nothing is said. After some pause, he tries again to find his voice, managing a pitchy, “Huh?”
“Hold on, hold on,” says Hunk, stepping forwards from the buffet table in which he and Pidge had been snacking from, their eyes darting back and forth as if watching a live dramatisation of a play. There’s this amused sparkle in his eyes, like he’d full on guffaw if this weren’t a professional setting. “So what you're saying is you want to marry Lance?”
“Yes, I find his company to be delightful. Even if he’s not the blue paladin, red is such dashing colour for a dashing man,” says the prince, taking Lance’s hand in his own to press a kiss to it. If it had been Allura preforming the action, she knows Lance would be a flustered red mess right now. As it is, he isn’t, though there does in fact seem to be a slight trace of red on his cheeks. “Please, paladin Lance, consider my offer.”
“As generous as your offer is, he cannot accept,” says Allura with as much professionalism as she can muster. She’s glad others are able to recognise Lance’s good qualities as she has, but it’s best they shoot down this man’s attempts as courting Lance as soon as.
“Yeah,” agrees Pidge wholeheartedly. “You’re really not his type. I’ve only ever seen him try and flirt with girls before and—”
“Uh, Pidge…” says Hunk, elbowing her in the side. She casts him a quizzical look and Hunk starts whispering in her ear. Nothing that Allura can pick up, even with heightened hearing. A crowded room like this is full of all sorts of muttering.
“Look, I’m really flattered, okay? I am,” says Lance, scratching his neck. He gives the prince an oddly bashful—yet endearing—smile. “It’s not everyday a prince gets charmed by my… me. But I’m going to have to say no. Sorry. And it’s nothing to do with you being a guy or anything, I mean, that’s fine. But I’ve already promised myself to this incredible woman and I really, really want this to work between us. Soooo… we’re cool right? This won’t affect the alliance… will it?”
Two rejections in a row has the prince looking out of sorts. There’s something to his smile, tight, pinched, that makes Allura believe that was less of a proposal and more of a demand.
“You could take us both,” insists Bokar, trying once more. Unsuccessfully, of course, as Lance uncomfortably shifts on his feet, looking like he’d rather be anywhere but here right now.
“Yeah, uh, we’re good.”
“No, I insist,” presses the prince, forgoing any pleasantries. The crowd around them starts muttering even louder, noises of disapproval directed at Bokar. “You can’t refuse a proposal from a prince! I’m me!”
“He said no,” says Allura, sharp, her glare even sharper. She notices Coran is giving him a similar expression, a rare sight indeed.
“But—”
“Enough Bokar,” comes a booming voice, sending an invisible tremor throughout the people in the crowd, guests jumping in their skin. “You cannot treat our guests this way.”
“But father, you said I could have anything I wanted,” protests Bokar, now less charming, more whiny brat. “And I want a lion! He’ll give me his lion.”
The way Lance deflates at that has Allura making mental note to shower him with love and appreciation once this is all done. Right now, she has half the mind to fling this spoiled prince across with room, consequences to the coalition be damned.
“No way man,” says Lance. “I’ve been here before and it involves being tied to a tree.”
Oh how could they forget.
“Your majesty,” says Shiro, addressing the king. “If this is the condition for joining the coalition, we won’t be able to accept. This isn’t right.”
“Hmm, yes. I apologise for my son,” says the king, another glare directed at Bokar. “Worry not, I have every intention to join the coalition. As for Bokar, he has a little more growing up to do before I marry him off, so it seems.”
***
“Eugh. What a jerk,” says Pidge over the lions’ comms. “He could not take no for an answer.”
“Indeed,” agrees Allura. She has absolutely no time for people like that.
“Yeah! I mean, he basically forced Lance into making up a girlfriend to get him to back off,” says Hunk. He narrows his eyes. “… You did make up a girlfriend right? I would know if my best friend was dating someone, wouldn’t I? Are you dating someone? Is it that alien from that planet of mermaids? Did she give you her number?”
A guilty wince. “Well…” Lance says, trailing off.
“No way,” says Pidge, no lack of disbelief.
“Oh my gosh! Lance, Lance,” says Hunk, a flurry of delight. “You’ve gotta spill the beans. First Allura, now you? When did this even happen? I mean, there’s just so much to tell Keith now! Usually all our blade phone calls are like ‘I found some new spices that don’t melt your insides’. And ‘we fought more galra.’ But now this. I mean, talk about a coincidence.”
“Err, about that,” Lance tries again. “See, there’s a reason for that. I was talking about Allura. We’re dating each other. Surprise?”
And with a flourish of his hands, the secret is out.
How this manages to be so exhaustingly dramatic an experience, yet simultaneously underwhelming, Allura doesn’t know.
“Oh!” says Shiro, an amused twitch to his smile. “Congratulations, the both of you.”
Hunk’s eyes are wide, impossibly so. “… Huh?”
“Sorry for not telling you before. It just… never came up.”
”No—it’s just. Wow. Didn’t see that one coming.”
“Me neither. Huh, weird. I didn’t think Allura would… yeah,” says Pidge, a strange expression on her face Allura can’t quite distinguish.
“He’s right, Pidge,” Allura admits, looking fondly at Lance on the screen. He returns the look easily.
“Gross,” says Pidge, that expression disappearing like it was never there at all. Pidge rolls her eyes. “Get a lion, guys.”
Lance just laughs, a sound that has Allura wondering just how they managed to hide this relationship at all.
It is truly a beautiful sound.

on the mice having math names:
I do think that all the underland creatures have their own names in their native languages, and it's only when speaking english that they use other names. the bats thought the humans' stories of gods and heroes sounded noble, so they chose their names from there, the mice took an interest in the humans' way of doing math and thought their math words sounded intriguing, so they chose their names from there, the cockroaches when asked just give their real names and the human they're talking to goes "uh tick, you said tick?" etc. I hc that the only race that uses english translations of their actual names is the rats.
anyway Cube
Ask continued:
fuck I have more to say about marks of secret actually I think ripred really tried his best with pearlpelt… but he might have been more abrasive than he meant to be. especially when pearlpelt was a baby and couldn't/didn't say much, I feel like ripred would've made bitter comments that he figured pearlpelt wouldn't fully understand or remember. pearlpelt's pre-existing trauma, mixed with his status among the rats as either a future leader or a future threat, all just came together to create a kid who desperately needed to feel like he belonged somewhere, like he was wanted… and on the one hand you have ripred, who had his best interests at heart and probably fed and protected him to the best of his ability but was likely snippy with him and somewhat aloof, versus twirltongue who only wanted to use him and made him feel like she loved and wanted him… it's easy to see how she was able to manipulate him. (esp when you have that scene where gregor starts to trust twirltongue more than ripred for just a second there after only one conversation with her.) I'm not blaming ripred for The Bane, it's just fucked up that pearlpelt didn't have a good support system after his father killed his mother =( he WAS just a kid, before he was pushed into becoming a genocidal dictator
First of all I love your headcanon about the rats being the only animals to use direct translations of their original Gnawer names. It makes sense to me that animals' names in their own languages would be descriptive of the animal in some way. Like white coat = Pearlpelt. And the rats don't care what the humans think, so they were just like, "That's my name, I'm sticking with its original meaning." Meanwhile, the bats are like, "We must sound dignified to the humans! Let's pick Ancient Greek names."
Also, "Cube" kills me. Luxa why did you pick that name it's so silly!
I enjoyed hearing your take on Ripred and the Bane! I'm always very interested in hearing what people think of Ripred's parenting skills or lack thereof.

Galactik football S1 ep5 review - (1/3)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
>> Comment : This is Tia's Obia moon mansion. Tia's diplomatic parents are in front of her. Tia is being scolded for hiring an actor to act as her fake parents.
Tia resembled her father in her overall appearance, including her eyes and hair color.
Next to Tia is a nanny who has taken care of her since she was a child. Her name is Stella.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
>> Comment: Tia's parents use their fake parents to scold their daughter for joining Aarch's team. Tia ends up in tears. Are they really angry that their daughter stole her father's spaceship without saying anything and ran away? Or are they angry about having an actor pretend to be a fake parent? They don't seem to be worried that their daughter got hurt in the game against the Wamba team. (And Tia's leg cast and crutches are gone.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
>> Comment: Her room is very, very big.
Tia seems to be really rich. (Compared to mice's room size.)
Tia tries to tell the nanny her sorrow, but the nanny teaches Tia about the existence of CCTV.
Tia sticking her tongue out to CCTV is cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
>> Comment: The daily life of an engineer. gif
No matter how hard Clamp tries, no one recognizes the engineer's efforts.
Akillan's stadium is still covered in ice.
The condition that Aarch was allowed to form a team was "melting the ice-covered stadium." He needs to melt the ice before the game against the Red Tigers.
Because of this condition, Clamp has to work constantly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
>> Comment: Without Tia, Snowkids are practicing ahead of their game against the Red Tigers.
There's no team play at all.
Mice, who replaced Tia on the team, is so motivated. Mice has to pass to Rocket but has ignored him. Sinedd always tries to prove he's the best. Conclusion: The team is not playing at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
>> Comment: Sinedd Vs D'jok + Microice
Mei is dumbfounded that those three are fighting again. The 3 people fighting small behind Rocket and Mei are funny and cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
>> Comment: Holo-trainer is released.
(3 people walking out without strength are cute)
(These three were so close that they were called brothers when they were young, since when did they start to have a bad relationship?) Aarch : I want remind you that if we lose this match against the Red Tigers. it's all over. peple out there are waiting for me to fail. anybody who felt threatened by my return would be thrilled to see me drop out and I don't want give them this pleasure.
(Sinedd, D'jok, and Mice are sitting furthest from each other.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aarch : I want show them that I was right prove to them that you are capable of being great players. we won't get a second chance and I frankly can't see us winning this match playing the way we are. but to do that youhave to play 'together' not against each other
Ahito : but sir! we can never win without Tia.
Thran : True. she had the breath. we don't.
>> Comment : Yes, Aarch's comments are about Rocket and Sinedd. Rocket (and the rest of the kids) can never play football again if he loses the game. Sinedd doesn't monopolize alone, it has to be team-play.
Tia was the only player who could use flux, and the rest can't. So Snowkids are pessimistic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clamp found a way to get rid of the ice in the stadium.
Clamp: (Explaining how he's going to melt the ice)
Ahito : ah..I didn't quite get all that. Thran : don't worry about it. go back to the sleep.🤣🤣😂😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The red tigers vs the Rykers
The Red Tigers without Flux are losing disastrously to Rykers.
Tumblr media
>> Comment : This is Rocket doing Red Tigers analysis by himself. He's practicing his conversation with Aarch. (I understand. He has never talked deeply with anyone except his father.)
Rocket seems to be bothered by the fact that he is Aarch's nephew. This just occurred to me. Fifteen years ago, Team Akillian was famous, and Aarch was so famous that he was an idol of Akillian children. But does it make sense that the SK don't know Aarch's brother, Norata? Norata even held hands and dragged Rocket to prevent him from taking the test in front of the Snowkids. If you think about it a little bit, it'll be easy to see that Aarch and Norata are brothers > that Rocket called Norata his father > so Rocket is Aarch's nephew Did I think too deeply in the children's TV program?😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
D'jok here is also very good at asking and answering his own questions. (And MICE didn't hear D'jok because she was wearing headphones.🤣)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rocket: (Suddenly appears in mei's room at night without a knock) Mei: Ah! Are you crazy?you scared me to death Rocket : the door was wide open Mei : ……so do you feel obliged to enter someone's house every time you see an open door? Rocket : no….hmm….i wanted to ask if you haf any news from tia. Mei : Why? Rocket : because you shared the same room so i thought that… Mei : you think that she shared things with me tia? I've never met someone as secretive as her…except you maybe. I really don't see what the problem is in talking about oneself….
>> Comment: The small gag conversation parts in S1 are funny. Mei didn't talk deeply with tia. And snowkids don't know anyone about the rocket. Did Aarch just bring the rocket? What did he introduce and bring it? 'Aarch: Well, you guys are really bad at passing. But don't worry. We have a player here who is good at passing the ball, so we brought him here without testing him. His name is Rocket.' I don't think so, right?

I'm curious about your opinion about 'a discussion' about the Doctor saying in Survivors of the Flux: "Earth has been shielded from the Flux, but it'll be vulnerable. It'll become a target. If the Flux is destroying the universe, if planets and stars are being wiped out, there will be displaced creatures who need a home. Somewhere to take over." Mostly due to how I've seen it being said to be the Doctor expressing anti-refugee sentiment, especially the usage of 'take over'.
i've sat on this one because it depends Entirely on how this ~discussion~ happened. Your grammatical choices in writing this ask do not fill me to the brim with confidence, however.
Anyway.
If we're having an on the level discussion on linguistics and phraseology where we talk about how innocuous turns of phrase like 'take over' (mice took over my loft once, it sucked) have been co-opted as very not innocent phrases, and how it would have been better if they'd made it verbally explicit that they meant a colonization like something along the lines of what the Sontarans literally already did in Liverpool a couple of episodes ago then... You know, I may even agree? I do think contextually it's clear what they're saying here but hell, might as well be on the nose. If people are gonna accuse the era of spelling everything out for people, they might as well have done so.
However, if we're being cunning enough to ignore all context available in both that A) this whole era is a criticism of treatment of refugees AND simultaneously even more so a scathing criticism of colonialism, all to genuinely spout that they'd suddenly, in one of the last couple of episodes, do a step-heel-turn and deliberately say fuck them refugees that are gonna come steal all our jobs or something then... I mourn our good friend, Nuance McNuance. Such a good guy. Miss him so much. Gone too soon.
This line did not happen in a vacuum and should not be considered like it did.
(this is bringing me Back to people who complained that war of the sontarans had inconsistent morals. No. Actually it was just giving the thumbs up to beating the shit out of violent colonizers and also saying to stop waging pointless stupid war and getting people killed for no reason other than ego. Oh the death of nuance.)
Anyway, like i said, it depends on how this was said. Discussing linguistics choices is a totally normal port of fandom call, but ignoring context both of the scene and era at large to Choose to interpret in such a way that contradicts the themes and morals of an entire era of the show is... Well. We'll highball and say it's uncharitable.
(and since when does the Doctor refer to somebody being Nice as a Creature??? If we're digging in linguistically already then that is. Not a thing.)
You know that post going around saying that a person saying they support something but doing so using "bad" language is Far better than the person who uses the up to date appropriate terms, but is supporting a fucked up message? How in such cases sentiment is where you look because that is Far more important than linguistic choices? Yeah. I'm still far more worried about the zygon two parter, thanks (but i'm not gonna talk about That one bc i'd have to watch it again and hell no).
They're talking about daleks, and cybermen, and sontarans, and whatever other species may make like the british empire and colonize. This is clear, frankly, to the point you don't Need to think about it.
The conversation is about phrasing, which could be improved but is not, you know, Horrifyingly dire as it's obvious what they meant.
Incidentally, due to context, if said line had been said in Moffat's era i'd be Way more leery because of some unfavourable context in his era.
And, to conclude;
In the words of Fred Jones in Scooby Doo, Monsters Unleashed
"I think coolsville sucks"

Star-Crossed | Basim x OC | Part 4
As strange things happen at the House of Wisdom, Nashira begins to wonder what Basim has been up to the last four years…and what he’s up to now.
Nashira was never one to hold her tongue.
Perhaps being raised by her father had something to do with that.
Khalid ibn Mohammed was many things: a respected astronomer, a loving father, and above all else, a spirited debater. She’d seen him confidently share his theories and findings to rooms filled with the world's most celebrated scholars from Baghdad to Greece to Timbuktu. She’d also seen the many lengthy instances where he was asked to defend such findings, which he always did, with ample evidence to boot.
Anytime Nashira wanted something, she and her father had a little game where she’d have to defend her reasons as to why she should have it, while Khalid would argue against it. In fact, such a game is how she got Halah.
“A cat will keep the mice away,” A young Nashira stated.
“They are a big responsibility azizati” he’d say.
“I’m very responsible,” She persisted, “I study very hard, and I complete my chores without being asked.”
Khalid raised a brow, pointing to her study area, “Then why is your desk still a mess?”
“Because if it was clean, Baba, I wouldn't have any way to show you how responsible I am.”
Khalid let out a roar of a laugh. He could not argue with that logic. The next day he presented his daughter with a fluffy white cat.
She never held back in any conversation, especially an intellectual one. She’d learned the art of having tact, but that tact could only do so much in the face of outright foolishness. It was no surprise then when she openly criticized the House of Wisdom’s head scholar, Fazil Fahim.
The man was a charlatan, at least Nashira thought so. He spoke of people who came before, how they would come again one day, how his so-called “great work” proved as much.
Nashira read his research, she attended his lectures, and saw absolutely no basis for this claim. Fazil Fahim had no place as first scholar of the House of Wisdom if intended to spout the musings of a fool. Worse yet, he was spending an unthinkable amount of money on a pointless dig sight out in the wilderness. That part angered Nashira the most.
“To make such claims without any solid evidence is moronic!” Nashira exclaimed after one of his symposiums, “I expect better from a man as intelligent as Fazil Fahim, especially when he is the head scholar of the House of Wisdom. With the money he spends on that dig site, we could fund stipends for more scholars and pay school fees for students who cannot afford it otherwise. A terrible waste!”
What Nashira had not considered was that unlike her father, who was understanding and encouraged her to speak freely around him, other men did not take such talk as well from a woman.
Lately, she swore someone was following her. Around the House of Wisdom, around the markets, outside her home. She couldn’t explain it but she felt a presence near her at all times, starting around the time she made the comment about Fazil.
Perhaps it was him following her around? To confront her on what she said? If that were the case he knew where her observatory was. Nothing stopped him from simply strolling right in and giving her a piece of his mind.
Nashira sighed, drumming her fingers on the open book in front of her. After some contemplation, she let her thoughts drift to where she tried so hard no to let them go.
Could it be Basim?
Her mind filled with the image of his round eyes, his dark brows, his full bottom lip he bit when he was nervous….
She let out a frustrated huff, “Stop it Nashira….” She made herself clear the last time they spoke. That was all in the past. She was married to Omar and he was a good husband to her. This was just her wishful thinking again. The residuals of reckless teenaged passion.
She glanced at the open window. Why did she even bother keeping it open anymore when the only person who ever used it was him?
Nashira walked over to it, taking hold of the window panes and froze. Keeping it open just a little bit wouldn’t hurt? Right? It was quite hot today and the draft would be nice.
She dropped her arms by her side with a heavy sigh, resigning to her desk as she gazed at the window she was too cowardly to close.
Halah jumped into her lap, meowing at her.
She let out a laugh, “You’re right Halah, I need to forget about Basim,” She petted the cat, “Especially before Omar comes back…he’ll notice something is wrong with me and I wouldn’t have the heart to be honest as to why…”
The cat purred into her hand.
Suddenly, Basim leaped through the window. It wasn't in his usual way, he barreled his way in like he was in a rush, or rather a panic.
She gasped, “Basim?”
She paused upon seeing his expression. Basim looked distraught, “You need to get out of here. Now.” He walked over and grabbed her by the arm.
She resisted, “Excuse me? You can’t just barge in here and demand I go anywhere with you, not without an explanation!” She barked at him, and he backed a little in response.
Suddenly the doors of the observator burst open, revealing a group of heavily armed guards. Many of them holding weapons that seemed too coarse for a building full of scholars.
Nashira let out a scream, “What in the world?” She muttered under her breath. The guards drew their swords, filling the entrance. Basim stepped in front of her and Halah, a deadly look in eyes. It didn’t seem to match the face of the sweet boy she used to know, but she considered herself lucky to not be on the receiving end of it.
The biggest guard pointed his sword directly at Nashira, “There she is. Get her!” He ordered.
Basim drew his scimitar from his hilt, a deadly focus growing on his face, “Nashira, Halah, stay behind me.”
_______________________________________________
Basim panted, returning his scimitar to its hilt on his side. Around them lay the dead bodies of the assailants. Taking them out was light work, though he hated making a mess of the observatory.
Nashira stood in place clutching Halah, whose fur stood on ends. They both trembled after witnessing such carnage.
He walked over to her, “Are you alright?” He asked. His voice sounded gently and sweet, a total contrast to the ferocity he displayed in the earlier fight.
Nashira nodded slowly, eyes still focusing on the bodies in front of her. She had never seen so much blood before. She shivered thinking how It would have been her blood had Basim not arrived in time.
He sighed with relief, “Now you see why I need you to come with me?” He asked.
Nashira let out a shaky breath, “Why on earth would these men try to kill me?” She asked, clutching Halah tightly against her.
Basim stepped towards her, “Many people in The House of Wisdom have been going missing, some of them have even been killed. I decided to look into this and spoke with a man who said someone by the name of Al Rabisu was targeting scholars getting involved with a mysterious dig site out in the wilderness. Your name came up and I rushed over here.”
He let out a sigh, “I am just glad I wasn’t too late.” He said just above a whisper.
Nashira swallowed hard, “Me too.” She thought for a moment, “Who is this Al Rabisu?”
“That is what I am trying to find out,” Basim said, “Think, is there anyone you could have angered in the last few days? Anyone at all?”
Nashira thought for a moment, “Well…I may have said some critical things about Fazil Fazim?” She bit her lip nervously. Looking back on it, maybe openly criticizing the most powerful man in the House of Wisdom was a bad idea.
Basim’s eyes widened, “The head scholar?”
She nodded.
He exhaled, “Well I can’t say I’m surprised you'd do something like that.” He said, placing his hands on his hips. This pointed to motive for Fazim in regards to Nashira’s criticism, and further connected him to the order. Still, he needed to be absolutely sure before acting.
She frowned, “I know I said some harsh things, but what would killing me do? I don’t understand.” Nashira asked.
“I have my suspicions as to what Al Rabisu is up to, but first I need to get you somewhere safe.” Basim explained.
Nashira furrowed her brows as Basim guided her towards the window, “Basim what are you-” She was cut off by Basim blindfolding her.
She yelped when he picked her up. She tightened her hold on Halah as Basim carried them both out of the window. To where, she had no idea.
______________________________________________
Nashira sat in a strange room holding Halah in her arms, listening to the muffled voices below. Basim had been speaking with a hooded gray haired woman for some time now. Most of it sounded like her reprimanding him.
“What do you think you’re doing bringing an outsider here?” An older woman with a raspy voice asked angrily.
“I know, Master Roshan, but she was in danger. This was the only place I knew that would be safe.” He pleaded.
Roshan huffed, “You know the rules. No compromising the brotherhood.”
“She won’t,” He added, “I trust her with my life. We’ll keep her here as soon as I can figure out who’s behind the mask in the House of Wisdom.”
Nashira felt a sense of relief hearing him vouch for her to stay. She definitely didn’t feel safe enough to go home, especially with her husband gone.
Downstairs, Roshan didn’t budge, instead crossing her arms and hardening her stare.
Basim pressed his hands together, “Please master,” He lowered his voice, leaning in a bit, “This is important for the success of my mission.”
His mentor raised a brow, “Is all this important for your mission, or is she important to you?” she asked at full volume.
Basim opened his mouth to negate that, but couldn’t.
Nashira listened intently to the conversation, feeling her face growing red at what Roshan insinuated. She quickly shook the feeling away.
“That’s in the past.” she insisted to herself. She kept listening.
Roshan let out a deep sigh, “Alright. But make haste on finding out the truth behind Al Rabisu and this dig site. We do not have time to waste.”
Nashira let out a sigh of relief and heard footsteps walking up the stairs. She quickly busied herself, making it seem like she hadn’t been listening to that conversation.
Basim entered the space looking indignant after the harsh talking-to he just received, but quickly fixed his face once he saw Nashira.
“You can stay here as long as you need.” He said, “It is safe here.”
She sighed in relief, “Thank you, Basim…I really appreciate what you’re doing for me.”
He gave her a soft smile, “Of course, ya sayidati.”
She let Halah jump down from her arms, smiling when she saw her snuggle up against Basim’s boot, “If I might ask, where exactly am I?”
Basim let out a deep sigh, “I’m afraid I cannot tell you.”
Nashira raised a brow at him, but continued with her questions, “Then, can I ask what you are going to do now?” She hesitated, “Do you intend to…fix this issue the way you did in my observatory?”
Basim crossed his arms, “I will do what needs to be done to ensure your safety.”
She made an irritable noise at that, and Basim tried not to laugh. She hated not knowing things.
“What is with all these secrets? He’s never been this secretive…” she thought to herself, no doubt her face showing how irritated she was.
Basim gently patted her shoulder, “Try to relax while I’m gone.”
She rolled her eyes, “Easier said than done. You’re not the one with a target on their back.”
“True.” He shrugged, “At least not today.”
Basim turned around before he could see the look of wide eyed shock on Nashira’s face. Just what on earth does he do for a living?!
The steely look in his face returned as he glanced behind him, “I must go now. If you need anything, Master Roshan and Tabid will help you. I’ll be back soon.” He turned to leave the room, headed for the House of Wisdom to continue his investigation.
Just as Basim was about to turn the corner, he heard her voice behind him.
“Be careful.”
She said it softly, nearly a whisper. He smiled to himself, then turned just enough to nod at her, and left.
When he disappeared from her sight, Nashira let out a long breath, trying to shake off the feeling in her chest. She thought back to the fight that broke out in her observatory. As scary as the situation was, Basim skillfully subdued her attackers with ease.
If she hadn’t already known him, she’d swear he was a hero from an epic tale that leaped off the page and into real life. He could protect anyone from anything, no longer the defenseless boy from the streets she once knew. This Basim was a different beast entirely.
She shook her head when she realized she was thinking about him for too long, “Stop it Nashira!” she said to herself.
Her eyes drifted to Halah, who sat on the floor and looked up at her, tilting her head.
Nashira shrugged, “What?”
Halah simply meowed, walking toward one of the cushions on the floor to take a nap.
______________________________________________
Nashira knew she was supposed to stay in the room and out of the way of everyone else in the bureau, but her curiosity couldn’t stay away. It had been at least a day since Basim brought her here, and the only fresh air she got in that time was from the small enclosed courtyard just outside the bureau. She crept out of the room Basim left her in and made her way down the hall.
There weren’t many people at all in the bureau. The few people there were too occupied with their own studies to notice her. Or rather, she suspected, they did notice her and decided she was such a non threat they didn’t have to acknowledge her presence. She figured that was for the best all things considered.
She made her way down the stairs, taking note of her surroundings: there was a desk, a bookshelf filled with reference books and maps of the city hanging on the walls. Near the door was a board with several papers pinned to it.
Nashira got close to the desk in an attempt to read the papers on it, having to strain her eyes just to make out a few letters at a time.
“What are you doing?”
She whipped her head around at the sound of the raspy voice from earlier. There stood the woman in similar robes to Basim, only she had a red sash instead of the blue one he wore. Her hood was up, unlike the other hidden ones in the bureau, and Nashira could only make out the bottom half of her face. She must have been the woman Basim was speaking with earlier, Master Roshan.
“Nothing,” she sputtered, “I was just-“
“You were just looking at confidential documents?” Roshon finished for her as she stalked up to Nashira, towering over the younger woman.
“My apologies, I didn’t know they were confidential, they were out in the open,” Nashira clarified, “I don’t even have my magnifying glass on me so I could hardly read any of it.”
“A likely story,” said Roshan, “Or a clever lie.”
Nashira frowned, “I am no liar. And unlike you and Basim I do not keep secrets either.” She crossed her arms.
Roshan hummed, “Then perhaps you’re not so clever after all.”
Nahsira scoffed in response.
Roshan examined the woman in front of her. She didn’t peg this woman as a member of the order, but she could never be too careful. By the looks of her, she had zero fighting prowess about her. She was young, about twenty if she had to guess, olive skinned, shaped like a pear with a soft tummy, and lacking in muscle. Nashira didn’t possess any weapons on her person and definitely dressed like a woman could afford to hire people to fight for her judging by her elegant robes and jewlery.
It was clear she wasn’t a threat, at least not physically.
No doubt she was beautiful enough to compel the hearts of men and women around her. Men like Basim, who despite having grown from the scared boy he was when Roshan first met him, was still a man. A young one at that, making him an easy target for seduction.
She decided she wouldn’t let up until she had a better understanding of who this young woman was and what she was doing with her student.
Roshon narrowed her eyes, “Who are you?”
“Nashira bint Khalid ibn Mohammed.” She answered quickly, “I’m an astronomer at the House of Wisdom.”
“A woman astronomer,” Roshan thought, not hiding her intrigue in her face, “Being a woman in your position must make you quite vulnerable. Especially to men with fragile egos in the House of Wisdom I imagine.” She said aloud.
Nashira sighed, “Perhaps…I’ve been made quite aware of that recently…”
Roshan tilted her head. Clearly she was intelligent considering she was a scholar. Though intelligence does little to help naïveté it seems. Any woman in a lower class knew a man’s ego was a threat, as Roshan herself was well aware. However women of higher class lived in a world sheltered by the men around them. Those women had the protection of their well to do male relatives and whoever served them. Perhaps the events leading to Nashira staying here were a rude awakening on that fact.
Roshan continued, “How do you know Basim?”
Nashira rubbed her hand up and down her arm, “We were…friends.” She said, trying to keep her gaze locked on Roshan but couldn’t help but to shift her eyes to the ground.
“Friends?” Roshan raised a brow, sensing she was withholding information. Still, her hesitation to answer her questions regarding Basim did not seem to come from a place of deception, at least not with the goal of deceiving Roshan in this very moment.
Nashira shifted her eyes from the floor to Roshan’s, “Perhaps more than that.”
Now it was coming together for Roshan. Like his friend Nehal, she was just another piece of the past Basim had to reckon with, “I see…And are you still more than that?”
“No.” Nashira answered quickly.
“Why not?”
The young woman shrugged her shoulders, “He disappeared,” she looked Roshon up and down, “I suspect you know the rest.”
“The rest?”
Nashira rolled her eyes, “The parts I don’t know…or aren’t allowed to know it seems.”
Roshan clasped her hands behind her back, “Basim took an oath, to leave his past behind him and walk our path. To walk the shadows and serve the light.” She held Nashia’s gaze, “He has no room for anything else. I’m sure you understand Nashira.”
Nashira nodded. So then this was the reason he stayed away so long. This oath of his to leave his past behind, her included. After all the time they spent together, had he really intended to forget about her just like that? It took her years to make peace with his sudden disappearance. Was it really so easy for him? If he wasn’t required to come back to Baghdad, would he have even bothered seeking her out at all?
She swallowed hard. Why did the thought of that upset her so much?
Her somber expression didn’t go unnoticed by Roshan, “I do not say this to be cruel. I just do not want you to get you to get your hopes up.”
She met Roshan’s gaze with her own, “That will not be a problem. What we had is in the past.”
“Is it?” The hidden one tilted her head.
“It is.” Nashira answered sternly, “And once this is all over and I can go back to my observatory and we can forget all about this.”
Roshon paused for a moment, then let out a sigh. This woman was smart, but a terrible liar.
“Very well.” She said, turning on her heel toward the door, “I enjoyed our chat, Nashira bint Khalid.” She put her hand on the doorknob, “there are some books on the shelf behind you. I suggest you read those to keep your boredom at bay.”
Without another word she walked out the bureau, leaving a stunned Nashira behind.
Nashira held her gaze on the door, letting her feelings sink into her. Despite the presence of others in the office, she suddenly felt more confused and alone than ever.
What path did Basim walk that led him so far from her?
_______________________________________________
Hours later, Basim walked into the upstairs room, startling both Nashira and Halah out of their sleep.
Sleeping on the floor was not her preferred method, but at least the Hidden One’s hideout was mostly quiet, save for the sound of footsteps. She stretched her sore muscles and Halah followed suit.
Nashira noticed Basim seemed…off? Like he had grown weary since she last saw him hours ago. She wondered what made him so.
Given what happened at the observatory, perhaps it was best if she didn’t know any details.
“It’s done,” He said, “Come morning you’ll be able to return to the House of Wisdom with no danger.”
She let out a sigh of relief, “That is good to hear,” She relaxed her shoulders, “So, was it Fazil Fahim then?”
Basim figured she’d find out he was dead anyway once she returned to the House of Wisdom. so he nodded.
She raised a brow, “Are you going to tell me what was going on with all those disappearances?” She asked.
He sighed, “I cannot reveal-”
“Right, more secrets.” She rolled her eyes, getting a bit fed up with all this secrecy.
“Trust me Nashira,” Basim put a hand over his heart, “If I could tell you, you’d be the first to know.”
Her eyes soften, remembering her conversation with Roshan earlier about Basim’s oath, “It’s fine. Thank you ya sadiqi.” She smiled warmly at him, showing her sincere thanks.
Basim felt a warmth spread in his chest seeing her smile at him, “I can escort you home if you’d like? So you do not have to stay in…here.” He gestured around the room, beautiful but quite small and simple compared to the observatory.
She grinned, “I’d love that.”
_______________________________________________
Basim marveled at the estate in front of him.
Nashira’s home was beautifully decorated with sun, moon and star designs etching the walls and arches. The private courtyard he stepped into was filled with a lush garden and a fountain where the moon’s reflection shone in the water.
“This house is beautiful.” Basim touched the etchings in the archways. His own father would be speechless if he saw this place.
Nashira smiled, “Thank you.” She took a seat on the edge of the fountain, “Omar is always away with the merchant caravans so he figured he’d have the house built to suit my tastes.”
Basim clasped his hands behind his back, “That is good. You deserve a gorgeous home.” His eyes softened at her.
She smiled back, and then looked up at the sky. A skwak rang out, catching her attention. Moments later an eagle flew down onto Basim’s outstretched arm.
“You’ve been flying all day,” he fed the bird a snack, “Do you ever tire?”
Nashira tilted her head as Basim brought the creature closer to her, “This is Enkidu, my animal companion.”
The bird was beautiful, and quite alert, seeming to take notice of the woman in front of him. She carefully reached out a hand to pet the top of Enkidu’s head.
The bird clicked with delight at the action.
“It’s very nice to meet you Enkidu.” Nashira smiled at the creature.
Basim let out a chuckle, “I can tell he likes you.”
Nashira blew the bird a few kisses, not noticing her cat stalking up the winged creature. With one swipe of the paw, Halah hissed at the bird, causing it to fly back in the sky with a loud screech.
“Bad Halah!” Nashira picked up the cat, placing it in her lap, “you mustn’t hiss at our friend Enkidu.” She sent an apologetic glance at Basim.
He chuckled again, “Enkidu is a lot tougher than he seems.”
Nashira let Halah jump out of her lap. She patted a spot next to her on the fountain, “Please, sit with me.”
Without hesitation, Basim did as she asked. Stars filled the night above them, twinkling up above Nashira’s courtyard garden.
He sighed, “This reminds me of those times we’d sit on the roofs in Anbar.” He said, gazing above them.
Nashira smiled fondly, “Yeah, it does.”
A silence hung over them for some time.
She looked at Basim, taking in his new choice of dress. He wore a hood now, though it was down at the moment. His clothing was simple and plain, like a peasant or monk’s clothing. The only thing that stood out was the bright sash, and if you looked closely, you could see an array of thinly veiled weapons all over his person.
She gave him a long look, raising an eyebrow at him. Slowly the corner her mouth raised up in a smirk.
He noticed her gaze, “What?”
Nashira let out a small laugh, “I couldn’t help but notice how you choose the dress lately : hoods, concealed weapons…or should I say hidden? Much like those elusive hooded liberators you used to talk about all the time. What were they called?” She tapped her cheek with her finger as she circled around him, “The Hidden-”
Basim covered her mouth to stop her from talking.
His face turned serious, “Do not mention them, ever, understood?” He said in a hushed tone.
She nodded.
He took his hand away and she smacked him hard on the shoulder, “And stop shushing me!”
Basim grunted out a laugh at the smack and rubbed his shoulder, feigning pain. Nashira nearly hit him again but he caught her hand before she could.
“Nice try.” He smirked. He and Nashira laughed for a moment before realizing how close to each other they were, and that Basim currently held her hand in his. They both thought back to the times they used to play these kinds of games together in the observatory.
They were so close to each other. Close enough to feel each other's breaths on their noses.
He let go, clearing his throat and she tucked some hair back into her head scarf.
Nashira let out a little laugh, “To be honest I wouldn’t have figured it out had I not spoken to Master Roshan.” She mentioned.
Basim’s eyes widened, “You spoke with Roshan?”
She nodded, “She may have caught me looking at some confidential documents while you were away.”
Basim blinked, “I am surprised you lived to tell the tale.”
“As am I.” Nashira thought for a moment and then laughed, “I am surprised you took out those mercenaries so easily. I wouldn’t have expected that from you.”
Basim raised a brow, “What do you mean?”
“Well thieves aren’t exactly known for fighting.” She shrugged, “You were more so the ‘avoid a fight and run away as fast as you can’ type.”
“Hey now, I used to put up a good fight back then!” He protested.
She chuckled, “You certainly gave them what for…from the ground.” She winked.
Basim huffed in annoyance and rolled his eyes as she laughed thinking about all the times she saw Basim scrambling from the guards in the House of Wisdom.
She fidgeted with her hands in her lap, “I know I was a bit…harsh the night you returned to Baghdad,” She almost whispered, “I still stand by what I said, but, It is good to have you back. I missed having a friend to talk to.”
Basim smiled softly at the word friend. They had started out as friends, and he cherished that friendship just as much, if not more, than their romance for he would have never known he loved her without it. The love he had for Nashira never left, but perhaps it could change.
“I am glad to be back too. Even more so knowing we can still be friends.”
After a moment, she cleared her throat, “Roshan mentioned the reason you hadn’t come back to Baghdad was because of your Hidden One’s training.”
Basim nodded, “That is true. I needed to train hard and remain focused to reach my goal,” he explained, “and in order to do that I needed to take an oath to leave my old life behind.”
It grew quiet between them. He realized what he implied when he saw Nashira frown. Her face remained still, thought he swore he could see the slightest bend in her eye brow like something bothered her.
“Hold on, I didn’t mean- “
“No, do not apologize, I understand.” She assured him, “I’m happy for you. Becoming a Hidden One has always been your dream. Don’t apologize for following that path.” She gave him a small smile.
“You were my dream too.” He wanted to tell her, but remembered how she shut him down when they first reconnected.
Nashira couldn’t help but notice how tired Basim’s eyes looked. The dark circles pooled under them, growing darker since the last time.
“You are happy right? You look so weary,” She said.
Basim didn’t look at her, “I’m fine,” he lied. After killing Fazil Fahim, he saw another vision of the jinni. What used to only haunt him in his sleep now tormented him in his wake as well. He lacked the answers as to why, but it always happened when he slayed one of his targets.
Nashira placed a hand on his shoulder, “Are you sure?” Her eyes grew more concerned as she tried to get him to look at her but he wouldn't. He couldn’t.
Instead he asked her, “Are you happy Nashira?”
Nashira removed her hand from his shoulder. She looked far ahead of her, gazing at the beautiful archway of her home, built for her by a devoted husband who loved her.
“I should be…” She muttered out loud.
Basim looked her way, seeing the forlorn look in her eyes as she stared ahead of her. What did she mean? She had to be happy, right? She had her observatory, this house, a kind and wealthy husband, everything she’d need to live a secure and comfortable life. What was missing from it?
He brought his gaze back up towards the stars. If this was how things were meant to be, how could she be unhappy? How could he be expected to let what they had go if he knew she was unhappy with this life?
He shook his head. No, no, he couldn’t think like that. He was harping on feelings from the past, not focusing on the reality of the present.
He stood up, “I have to go. Master Roshan is expecting me.”
He needed to go. He couldn’t stay a moment longer or he’d say something he’d regret and ruin any chance of them being friends.
Nashira opened her mouth to say something, to tell him to come back, tell him to stay with her, even for just a moment longer.
Instead, all she said was “Goodnight, Basim.”
Basim swallowed hard, “Goodnight, Nashira.” He disappeared into the night.
_____________________________________________
The sun was shining high over Baghdad as Basim leaped across the rooftops to get to the House of Wisdom. Weeks had passed since he assassinated Fazil Fahim and by the looks of things, the House of Wisdom was bouncing back from corruption.
No signs of burning books, people freely walking about, freely discussing their findings and philosophies amongst themselves and their students.
He smiled to himself. It was nice to see the results of his work for once.
He made it to the ledge just above the window into Nashira’s observatory. He grabbed a hold of it and swung himself into the building, landing effortlessly on the floor.
As he stood, he dusted himself off, “Nashira, I have some work for you from Master Rosha-“
He stopped talking when he saw not only Nashira’s wide eyes staring back at him, but about 10 other pairs of eyes as well. All them were young girls, anywhere from thirteen to sixteen years old. They sat together at their desks as Nashira stood in the front with a board showing complicated math equations.
She cleared her throat, “Basim, this is my class.” She turned to her class, “Class, this is my old friend Basim. What do we say to our guests?”
“Assalamu alaikum.” They said in unison.
Basim put a hand to his heart, bowing his head, “Walaikum Assalam. My apologies for interrupting your class, children.” He said, “Perhaps I should come back later.”
One of the younger girls perked up, “Ustadah, why does he dress like a peasant?” She asked
“Fatima!” Nashira used a warning tone in her voice, the kind Basim recognized as the one her father used to let her know she was crossing a boundary.
Basim shook his head, “It is fine ya sayidati,” Basim looked at Fatima, “That is a fine question, young lady. When I was not much older than you, I grew up in Anbar, one of the poorer districts in Baghdad. Because of this, I saw many people and children like yourself go without the things they need and treated poorly by others, myself included,” he explained, clasping his hands behind his back as he spoke, “My clothes are a reminder of the oath I made to help those less fortunate.”
Most of that was true, though the simple answer was that the clothes concealed his identity. These girls didn’t need to know for what reason though.
He continued, “Like all of you, I spent a lot of time in this very room learning as much as I could, thanks to your teacher.” He said, looking over at Nashira.
Nashira smiled softly at him and he returned the gesture. This action did not go unnoticed by her students, who unfortunately for her were growing more and more observant everyday.
One of the girls raised her hand and Nashira called on her, “Yes, Reem?”
Reem smirked, “Is he the reason you tell us not to talk to boys from Anbar?” She teased.
Nashira clapped her hands, “Class dismissed!” She said, completely side tracking that question.
Immediately the girls scurried from their desks and out the doors to the rest of the House of Wisdom, carrying their books with them, breaking off into smaller groups to chat and giggle amongst themselves, stealing glances at their teacher and this mysterious bearded man from Anbar.
When all the students were out of the room, Nashira slowly turned around to face Basim, cringing when she saw his hands on his hips and a cheeky expression on his face.
“And what’s wrong with boys from Anbar?” He asked with a playful tone.
“Nothing! Nothing,” Nashira giggled, “I just wanted to make sure my girls know to look out for their-”
“Sticky fingers?” Basim answered, holding up both hands and wiggling his fingers.
“No,” Nashira pointed to her mouth, “Their slick tongues.” She said before they both burst out into a laugh.
Basim chuckled, “Do your students know what a bad influence you were on me?” He asked.
In their youth, Nashira often dragged him along to parts of the library they weren’t allowed in, or would convince him to use his “sticky fingers” to swipe books about topics her father wouldn’t allow her to read. If they ever got caught, Nashira would distract the guards and stewards so Basim could sneak away with their bounty.
Nashira smirked, “You were a worst one.”
At some point in the middle of their banter they had migrated very close to each other, leaving only a few inches of space between them. They cleared their throats and put more space between them.
“So, what did you come by for?” Nashira asked.
He grinned, “Isn’t it obvious? I’ve come to see my good friend.”
Nashira cracked a smile, only to scoff when he crouched down to pick up the fluffy white cat.
“Halah!” He said in a joyous tone, holding up the chubby cat who purred from the attention.
Nashira thumped his forehead with her finger, “You interrupted my class for that?”
Basim shook his head with a laugh, letting Halah jump out of his arms, “Master Roshan needs to know which stars to follow to get to these locations.” He handed her a parchment with Roshan’s request on it.
Nashira read the parchment. Many of the locations extended out of Baghdad, into areas like Greece, Constantinople, even the Norse lands, “Why does she need to go here?” She asked.
Basim shrugged his shoulders, “I can not tell you what I don't know.”
Nashira tilted her head, “You mean you didn’t ask?” That was so unlike the Basim she knew, who like her, was always nosy to fault. Though it seemed this Basim didn’t question his master on anything.
Basim shook his head.
She rolled her eyes, “More secrets.” She placed the parchment on the table, “Very well, I’ll figure it out in a few hours. Right now I need to go.”
Basim looked confused, “Go where?”
“To Anbar,” She explained, filling a bag with books, “One of my students, Maha, hasn’t been coming to class lately because her mother is sick and she has to watch her younger siblings. So I’m going over there to teach her in her home.”
“Really,” Basim hummed thoughtfully, “I never thought someone from Anbar could afford such a class.”
“Of course she can’t afford it. That’s why I don’t charge her, or any of my students for that matter.” Nashira clarified as she continued packing, “Maha is too bright for me to let her fall through the cracks.”
Basim wasn’t sure what he felt just then, but he found himself smiling at her while she wasn’t looking. He suddenly remembered how she said teaching was how she wanted to better the world around her. It was nice to see her following that call to purpose.
“It is a good thing you are doing, ya sayidati,” he said, “Though I wish we had more time to share a snack of dates and tea.”
Nashira smirked, “Consider yourself lucky. Since you are so eager to spend time with Halah, you can cat sit while I’m gone.” She winked at him, before heading out of the observatory.

Prompt: A fic about Alison, Mike and Robin after Robin saves Mike and Mike sees him. - Prompt sent in by the lovely @harrisonwells

————
Good Boy
“Robin’s room is upstairs, right? The rundown one that’s drafty?”
Alison looked up from their latest electricity bill.
“You do know that describes about every single room in this house, right?” she pointed out. When Mike gave her a look, she sighed. “Yes, it’s the one upstairs. Why? Is something wrong with it? Despite the obvious, that is.”
Instead of answering her question, Mike hummed thoughtfully to himself. “And Robin’s obsessed with the moon, right?”
“Yes, Mike, as you very well know,” Alison said with a hint of impatience, not understanding what he was getting at. “What’s with all the questions?”
Mike flashed her his most charming, innocent smile and Alison immediately knew she wouldn’t like whatever he’d say. “Promise me you won’t be mad?”
She sighed. “What have you done?”
“Nothing!” Mike hurried to reassure her. “I promise! But I’ve been thinking – Robin saved my life, didn’t he? Last week when I was out in the storm.”
“Because of the stupid bear,” Alison couldn’t help but remind him.
“Yeah, whatever,” Mike said with a roll of his eyes. “So when he redirected the lightning I saw him for a brief moment and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about that.”
Alison felt her eyes soften. “Oh Mike, why didn’t you say anything?”
“No, it’s not like that,” Mike waved her worry away. “I know we’ve thanked him for what he did but with the gatehouse burning down and the whole insurance mess it feels like we haven’t really appreciated it enough, you know?”
Thinking back to the last few days, Alison had to admit he had a point. They’d been crazily busy this past week trying to figure out their whole life all over again, and while a part of her was relieved they agreed the gatehouse might not have been a good idea in the long run, the decision not to host guests anymore felt a lot like they were back at square one – financial struggles and worries included. Robin’s heroic deed might not have gone unnoticed but Mike was right: it hadn’t gotten the attention it deserved.
“So what’s the plan?” she asked.
Mike pulled her against his side with a grin. “Giving him the moon and stars.”
————
It took a few days to get everything organised. While Mike was in charge of getting all the necessary things (Alison tried not to grimace when she saw how much it all cost) and setting everything up, her main task was to keep Robin busy and far away from his room.
“So … how’s your mouse family doing?” she asked Robin the day they planned to put their plan into action and inwardly winced. Judging by the incredulous looks both Julian and Thomas – who happened to be in the room at the time – were giving her the question sounded as painfully awkward as it felt.
Robin, thank god, frowned at her for an entirely different reason. “Mice grow fast. Babies are all grown up now.” The words, You should know that, went unspoken.
“What a shame,” Alison lied through her teeth as she desperately tried to think of another way to get him out of the house for the day. “I’ve got a little time now and would have loved to meet them.”
To her surprise, Robin perked up at that. He jumped up from his seat by the chessboard and, his eyes bright with boundless excitement and enthusiasm, said, “I can show you fox family!”
Alison blinked. “We have foxes here?”
“Why do you think the grounds aren’t overrun with the hares the Captain is so fond of fake-killing?” Thomas asked from the sofa, raising an eyebrow.
Robin pointed at him as if to say, See? He knows.
“I don’t know, Thomas, maybe because Barclay real-shoots them all?” Alison suggested, an edge of annoyance creeping into her tone. She regretted it immediately when Thomas winced and covered his wound.
“Foxes, eh?” Julian said, bringing the conversation back on track. He got to his feet with a groan. “Can’t say I wouldn’t prefer Samantha Fox but beggars can’t be choosers. So lead the way, ape. It’s not like we have anything better to do anyhow.” He looked at Thomas. “You coming?”
Thomas hesitated for a moment, his eyes darting up to Alison before dropping back down to his shoes again.
“Come on,” Robin gently encouraged him. “Cubs have grown much since last time we saw them. They out of the den now!”
A little of the tension around Thomas’s eyes bled away when he looked at Robin. “Really?”
Robin nodded. “Dreamer still stay close to his mother but Bella love to explore.”
“And Cleo?” Thomas asked.
“Still the runt of the litter but oh, very feisty,” Robin said with a great.
Thomas breathed out a laugh and it was with a start that Alison realised they regularly observed the local wildlife together. She’d had no idea but it made her heart feel a little lighter. Thomas spent so much time on his own she sometimes worried he’d lose his connection to the other ghosts. Knowing he was off to the woods with Robin during some of the time she’d always believed him to be sulking somewhere was a welcome revelation and relief.
“You named them?” Julian asked, interrupting her thoughts. Both Robin and Thomas turned to look at him, silently daring him to make fun of them, and he groaned. “Of course you did. I swear you two are just as bad as Fanny.”
From somewhere within the house, an offended Fanny shouted, “I heard that!”
————
By the time they came back from their little excursion in the woods, it was late and Alison couldn’t feel her toes anymore. She’d underestimated how much time, effort and patience it took to get even a glimpse at wild animals. The ghosts, of course, didn’t have to worry about where they were stepping but she had to be careful around all the dry twigs and branches barely visible under the layers of dead leaves covering the forest floor.
In the end, it was worth it, though. She’d never seen a wild fox with her own eyes before and watching the three little ones play under the watchful eye of their mother was incredible and so much better than any nature documentary on TV. Both Robin and Thomas’s faces lit up with awe when the cubs first stuck their tiny noses out of the den, and even Julian couldn’t help but smile when Cleo, clearly the boldest, raced around the small clearing chasing a butterfly.
The sun was just setting as they made their way back to the house where Mike was already waiting for them. “Where’ve you been?”
“Oh, just in the woods, watching Robin’s fox family,” Alison said with a smile. Under the pretence of giving him a kiss, she whispered, “Is everything ready?”
Mike’s eyes lit up and he nodded. Alison gave him a subtle thumbs-up before she turned back to the ghosts. “Robin? Would you come with us upstairs for a moment?”
Robin, after sharing a confused look with Julian and Thomas, shrugged. “Okay.”
They went upstairs, and when Mike stopped in front of Robin’s door, Robin cocked his head to the side in a confused way that reminded Alison of a mangy but trusting dog. “This is my room.”
Alison bit her lip to hide her smile. “Robin says we’re at his room.”
Mike nodded and turned to look at where he thought Robin was – a little too far to the left and too high up in the air. “Yeah, that’s right. See, Ali and I, we’ve been talking about the day the storm hit and you saved my life, and we wanted to thank you for that.”
Furrowing his brows, Robin glanced at Alison. “But – you already did. Said, Thank you, Robin. Me remember.”
“He says we already thanked him,” Alison told Mike.
“Well, yes,” Mike said. “But not, like, properly. You redirected freaking lightning for me, mate, and I saw you! That was so cool!”
Robin, Alison noticed, looked a little flustered under Mike’s praise.
“Was no big deal,” he mumbled, scratching his ear.
“It was, though,” Alison corrected him gently, wishing she could actually reach out to him. “It was a huge deal, Robin.”
“Still is,” Mike added. “And that’s why we planned a little surprise for you. I really hope you’ll like it.”
With that, he opened the door to Robin’s room and stepped aside. Robin’s mouth went slack when he saw the glow-in-the-dark stars spread out all over the ceiling. They weren’t randomly placed, Alison realised after a moment. She could see Orion above the area where Robin usually slept, and Cassiopeia right above the window.
“Mary,” Robin whispered suddenly and pointed at one of the stars that seemed to glow just a little bit brighter.
Swallowing around the sudden and unexpected lump in her throat, Alison told Mike, “He just found Mary.”
Mike’s eyes softened and he stepped into the room, somehow managing to avoid running into Robin.
“Annie’s there, too. See?” He pointed at another star, not far from Mary’s, and Robin’s eyes followed him. “And here’s William though to be honest I have no idea who that is. And Graham – also no clue.”
“Not true!” Robin said with a laugh that sounded just a little teary. “Armour downstairs is Graham’s.”
Alison blinked.
“Really? How come I didn’t know that?” At Mike’s questioning look, she explained, “Robin says the armour downstairs used to be Graham’s.”
“He never fall over with it like Mike did,” Robin snickered under his breath. Alison decided not to relay that bit to Mike.
“So, I take it he likes the stars?” Mike asked.
Robin nodded.
“He does. Very much so.”
“Great!” Mike said. “Because I’ve got another surprise for him.”
He reached up to touch something anchored to the ceiling and a second later, a moon lamp lit up and bathed everything in pale yellow light. Robin’s eyes widened in awe and he breathed out a reverent, “Moonah.”
“Go on, try turning it off and back on again,” Mike encouraged him with a grin.
Robin’s eyes lit up with giddy excitement before he closed them in concentration. His powers had grown since the lightning strike and it took him barely a moment to switch the lamp off and then back on again. He opened his eyes and let out a gleeful laugh. “Ha! Me did it!”
“Yes, that’s it!” Mike cheered at the same time. “Now you’ve got your own moon and night sky!”
His words gave Robin pause. Alison wished Mike could see him because his eyes were shimmering with so much gratitude in the faint glow of the moon that it took her breath away. He seemed to be itching to reach out to Mike but since he couldn’t, he bowed his head and said, very quietly, “Thank you.”
“No, Robin – thank you,” Alison whispered with a heartfelt smile.
Mike nodded und pulled her close. “Yeah, thank you. You’re the best.”
With a pleased look on his face, Robin sat down on the floor, right under the moon. “Me good boy.”
Chuckling a little wetly, Alison nodded. “Yes, you are.”
They bid him goodnight, and when Mike closed the door behind them Alison leaned up on her tiptoes to press a kiss to the corner of his mouth and whispered, “Well done, you.”
“Well done both of us,” Mike smiled. “Though I’m low-key jealous you got to see baby foxes.”
Alison patted his arm. “I’m sure Robin won’t mind taking you to see them tomorrow. You’re probably his most favourite person in the world right now, so …”
The pleased smile on Mike’s face almost made her add, “Good boy.”

Original Fairytale:
The girl, the myth, the legend. The one who started it all. She skips into the forest with head held high, unknowing of the wolf and the many, many retellings of her story. Something, something, puberty, something, something, men are wolves. Just let my girl wear her red cape and be on her way to Granny's, please and thank you.
I feel like in a lot of modern adaptations they get lost in making Red Riding Hood more a girlboss who fights back or making her secretly (or not secretly) the real wolf or having her and the wolf be love interests, they lose a lot of what made the original fairytale so good. AND SO CHILLING! We have been told this story so often since childhood we can forget how frightening it can really be. A lost young girl, punished for the follies of childhood. I also think that even in the "happy" endings when the huntsman saves her there is this sense that she will never be the same. Her childhood is over. And that's haunting! The horrors of unprotected innocence.
Ylfa:
She just went through so much and so much growth and i love her very much.
She becomes a big bad wolf
She met Death and Death wanted her to live.
Great depiction of a teenager by Emily Axford. A lot of scenes get really emotional with her being a symbol of the cycle of life and death and eventually she will always become the Big Bad Wolf.
she faced off with Death and he told her to live. this Death, who was much older than the Death she was supposed to meet, stared off with Yilfa for days until she succumbed to hunger and ate him alive. other iterations of death apologized to her for the story she was forced to suffer through, for the punishment she had to endure over an unrealistic and unabidable rule she was destined to break. her corrupted story turned her into the big bad wolf, into death itself. she sacrificed the beloved memory of her grandma, her namesake, so that her friends would be able to save their world. even though she gained it back in the end, she was willing to live the rest of her life as the wolf, a harbinger of death, and when she was reminded that she was just a child, that it wasn’t her responsibility to guide the dead, she cried, and separated from the wolf. she was able to grow up normal and happy after suffering from the looming presence of death. i’m gonna make me friend also submit yilfa bc they’re smarter than me and can make better propaganda
my mutual really likes her
Her narrative arc about growing up and life and death is so beautiful and her being a werewolf is so cool. Emily Axford gets girlhood like nobody else.
she is the bravest little girl in the world she met death and death wanted her to live she split his skull and ate the innards of death himself she is just a little girl!!!!!!!
PRIMO Red Riding Hood adaptation. Ate the wolf who ate her gramma. Is a werewolf and a metaphor for puberty. Loves her friends. Can break her bones to reshape her body into various animal forms.
Not only did she have to lose her grandmother, but she also nearly dies of starvation and exhaustion until The Big Bad Wolf, aka Death, convinced her to live, by her killing him and eating his flesh, therefore making her Death
Ylfa has a snazzy orange top hat given to her by a very attractive fairy. Three Blind Mice is her favorite story. She brought her grandma lollipopcorn and threw the broth in the river halfway there. She first developed a crush on Pinocchio when she saw him use his nose as a stripper pole and didn't kiss him until they were twenty-one and having an awkward conversation about her grandma's death and Toy Island. She fought a baron with a spoon. She wants a bra. She jumped into The Terrible Dogfish’s stomach to save her friend. She has pinkeye and grandma hobbies. She fought off a shit ton of homicidal tables at once. She is pals with Little Miss Muffet. She killed her family. She sacrificed the memory of her grandmother to become Death. She was basically adopted by Mother Goose (who is a cool old gay dude). She Wildshapes by horribly contorting her body into animalistic forms. She is a Barbarian who acts as a support character. She is the bravest little girl in the whole world.
Behold, 3 minutes of the weirdest and best little girl! [Link]
Her weirdgirl swag is off the charts :) [Link]
Ylfa Propaganda: [Link]
Ylfa turns Little Red Riding Hood into a metaphor for not just puberty but grief and death and the inevitability of loss--of innocence, of childhood, of who you had and who you were. The Wolf is the End of All Things, and Ylfa met Death and Death wanted her to live. She gave up the memory of her grandmother--her namesake, her humanity--and became Death, and she was there to be the end of her grandmother's grandmother's story, because there always has been and always will be a wolf. But in the end, she is just a little girl, and she doesn't have to take this burden. There is a wolf-that-is-not-a-wolf waiting for everyone with a snazzy orange top hat, and there is a strange girl playing cards with witches and kissing a boy who used to be a puppet, and they all lived happily.
Vote Ylfa cause she pulled through when it came to the Riding Hooded Mercenary and I know a worthy opponent when I see one.

Diary Entry 09152024
Dear Diary,
I am so grateful to have the partner that I have. I didn't realize he was all I asked for until we had the conversation we had on friday night. I remember writing so much about wanting to be with someone who would not hold me back from being the person I wanted to be, and that is exactly what I got, I just was being too much of a brat to see it before. I remember begging the universe to be seen, and heard and received and also to bring someone into my life that would not dim my shine, but encourage me to enhance it. And that is exactly what I got.
So, Friday after getting a lot more drunk than I intended we started talking about how we feel, not only about each other but our selves and he basically told me that I have the room and the space to be me and do exactly what I want; exactly what I needed to hear, exactly what i wanted. It was also a very necessary reminder because I become so deeply invested into my partner that I forget about the things I want to accomplish on my own. And he asked me if there were things I felt like I stopped doing because of him, and I was like yes of course there are so many pieces of myself that I let go because Im with you; there a lot of self care things I wouldn't do because all of my time went to you, and I didn't mind giving it up. But all those things that I did give up, I need. I need it in order to be myself, I need it in order to continue to show up for us.
I still have my work out routine / goal that I would like to continue to pursue. I still want to be out of this house by.. it's looking like I got 2 more years of this, but I would to travel more and hang out with my friends more like I used to. I want to do the dinner plans, the solo dates / trips. I need to continue to do those things for myself and continue to remind myself that he is not my life, just the person I want to share it with. But how can I do that if I have nothing to share. Either way the conversation that we had was honestly really good and I am just super grateful to be with him. I am so grateful that the stars aligned for us.
I don't know if I wrote about this the last time I journaled but I wrote my family a really long message (that no one responded to) and I think I'm going to have to up the ante, which sucks because I hate being the family manager. But clearly my familial concerns have not been taken into consideration. I'll just put it like this, there is too much happening in this house outside of human beings. (rats, fruit flies, regular flies, etc.) I have been begging my family to fix this clutter our for us to get together to get this shit together because why are the mice eating up food they don't buy and overall just having a fucking party at night when we got to bed. I do not like that, I do not like seeing them, I do not like living in a fucking pig pen. Im tired of my family not giving a fuck and being so complacent. People are not supposed to live like this, and I would love to live in a mice free, roach free home and I don't feel like thats a hard thing to ask for, but we MUST get rid of their hiding spaces before we can truly eradicate them from out fucking house or they will always be here.
Moving on, my job is starting to get more intense, and I am really trying to avoid gaining bad rapport with one of my AEs. I just - every day I am doing something new, which is what I wanted but I also think I think to much, I think too hard. It starts to fuck me up. I need to update my notes and be more confident in the things that I do. Until then, I should be fine. I just need to stop actually being so fucking lazy.
To wrap up, I kinda just need to remember who the priority is. (it's me btw, if you wanted to know). I feel like I've been saying this for the longest time "I need to get back to myself" but instead of saying this and this and that, I should just fucking do it. I need to become a doer. I shouldn't let the small things that bother me, bother me. I need to remember who I am and what I am capable of, and I'm very capable of getting everything I want. I need to remember my purpose, which is to love, and I need to remember that the first person I need to practice my purpose with is me.

Monday. Minimum 1 sentence.
---
"Have I seen you before?"
Belle was about to laugh at the trodden line, as if she hadn't heard it a dozen times at every ball. Flirting was an intricate social game among the courts. No matter in which kingdom Rumpelstiltskin had business, if their presence was wanted officially, there were always people willing to sweep her into a brief dalliance.
By now, Belle had a routine proven to let down gently any genuine admirer.
(The others, too stubborn or ill-intended to acquiesce, became very docile after a meeting with the Dark One.)
Her current dance partner had proved very nice so far. Belle hoped some flattering conversation and maybe another dance would be enough to satisfy him.
"I doubt it, sir," she said. "I've been at the King's court for only a few days, and I surely would remember you if we had met elsewhere."
He gave a small smile. "Would you?" The dance continued for another minute before he spoke again. "Perhaps you're right. Not even the Dark One's maid can be expected to remember every poor soul that crosses her kitchen."
Belle glanced up sharply, peering into the smiling face. There was no hint of anger or thirst for revenge, so she breathed in relief. Occasionally, people did make good on whatever deal Rumpelstiltskin made them. "You have me at a disadvantage," she told him.
He laughed. "And no surprise! Maybe if you think of me as small and furry, and very attached to the throw on your chair."
Belle blinked. A name came to her mind immediately, and though reason said it should be impossible, reason was not a stable presence in the Dark Castle.
"Mouser?"
The man grinned. "I go by Sir Steven now."
Belle thought he looked too happy for someone who'd spent a season chasing rats.
He must have read her expression. "Oh, it was all right. Warm milk and a full plate of fish, whether I caught mice or not. It was heaven for a poor nobody like me." He shrugged. "And I did well with the bag of gold I got afterwards, didn't I?"
Belle nodded.
It was far from the worst deal Rumpelstiltskin had forced on a desperate man, but must she start asking about the provenance of everything now?
The End
