A bout de souffle (1960) By Michael Bump
A bout de souffle (1960)
A bout de souffle is a film about a perry criminal named Michel. Michel kills a police officer. While on the run he hides out in Paris with his American girlfriend named Patricia. Michel is infatuated with Patricia while she is reluctant to trust him. Patricia discovers that the police are after Michel when she becomes aware of his crime. She turns Michel in to the authorities and he is killed trying to run away. Most of the film is dialogue between Michel and Patricia. The film is exciting, and jazz music plays with the emotions of the scene.
A bout de souffle (Breathless) was directed by Jean-Luc Godard. Godard was inspired by the American Hollywood gangster films. Breathless was Godard’s first feature film. Many critics felt that Godard’s style of filming pushed the conventions of filmmaking at the time. Specifically, the handheld camera angels and “jump-cuts” for which he became famous for. Godard also pays homage to other directors that came before him. Being that it was Godard’s first film, he could not afford some of the equipment needed to shoot certain scenes. There is continuous dialogue throughout the movie which is reminiscent of other old gangster movies. During that time, many people embraced the film. Young directors looked at the film as a revolution to the film industry.
Noteworthy events that were happening in the world when this film was released was first, the entire world and the superpowers were focused on stopping communism and creating the most nuclear bombs. February of 1960 France tested its first nuclear bomb in the Sahara Desert. Another event that happened during 1960 was the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. The world had only ended the second World War 15 years prior. There was massive hysteria around the world because people were worried about nuclear conflict with Russia and other communist powers. France and the United States were allies and it makes sense that the movie would have two people from those nations as love interests.
The film is movies fast. It almost feels like one long perpetual scene. I found myself rooting for Michel to get away from the police. I wanted him to make Patricia leave with him so they could start anew elsewhere. This film was good at making one root for the bad guy. It helps one understand that we all do not intend to do bad things, sometimes we just get caught up in the wrong situations. Michel does give off the notion that he has been a swindler for quite some time. It was just a matter of time before his evil deeds caught up with him. He falls in love with a woman and the almost successfully pulled her into his underworld. Godard wanted to show that you cannot run away from your problems, they will always catch up to you, no matter how well you hide. Michel was destined to be killed in the end. Patricia, the one he gave his heart to, was the one that turned him in. I think that was proof that she was in love with him.
This film is unconventional because it was unlike what people were used to seeing at that time in France and in the world of cinema. The style of filmmaking set the stage for future gangster-love sagas that came after it. This film was revolutionary to how action-romance films are made today.
There is a direct line through "Breathless" to "Bonnie and Clyde," "Badlands" and the youth upheaval of the late 1960s. The movie was a crucial influence during Hollywood's 1967-1974 golden age. You cannot even begin to count the characters played by Pacino, Beatty, Nicholson, Penn, who are directly descended from Jean-Paul Belmondo's insouciant killer Michel.
“À bout de souffle remains, as Raymond Durgnat suggested in 1988, "vivid witness to its era, in a manner transcending journalism and nostalgia alike". (1) Beyond all the surface icons of the hip late '50s – sunglasses, cool jazz, Seberg's endlessly imitated short haircut and tomboyish dress sense – there is something much deeper about that time which strikes a chord with today's audiences.”
“The original À bout de souffle may not seem half as disturbing, confronting or difficult as Godard's strange, nominal remake. But in 1960, its casual violence, disconcerting style, open-ended philosophising and raw invention had an immediate impact which was just as powerful and unsettling. These are qualities well worth rediscovering at any point in cinema history.”

i'm curious as to how "misunderstood" you think russia is as a country. i once asked a russian blogger about this and they said that they think russia is often misunderstood by the west and that a lot of misconceptions exist as a result of western countries always making russia out to be the bad guy. what's your opinion on that?
If you’re talking about this ask, I read it & loved it. But I’m assuming you want more information so I’m going to try and be thorough & actually get into politics. I live in the West so it’s what I’m most familiar with in how others feel about Russia but I read Russian news often so hopefully I can get both accounts in. In the basics, I do think it’s sort of a half-&-half situation where Russia deserves some questioning, but not nearly the amount of hate it gets (yeah, hate) in certain areas. I also want to take a moment to address what Russia has done wrong and that the West just ignores, it doesn’t help things.
To start off with: America’s postwar foreign policy was based off of viewing Russia as the enemy and no matter how we try to reword it, the fact is it still has a “need to fight the villain” policy. And I believe it contributes to the West’s ability to fall back into the “Russia is Bad” mindset quickly. I know the Russian blogger’s opinion on this, but let’s just call it out as is: if the West has nothing good to say, has misconceptions about Russia it’s not willing to address, and is acting on these misconceptions, then the West views Russia as evil. So we’re facing a complete disregard to Russia on the West’s part and no one takes the time whether to say it’s deserved or not. And from an objective standpoint, it’s not completely deserved. So, I’m going to get into the modern politics and try to clear some of this up.
Chechnya: I’m getting this out of the way now. Because the US asked Russia to crackdown on Chechnya’s concentration camps for gay men… and Russia asked the same of Chechnya before the US asked. Soon after the story broke, the Russian Human Rights Ombudswoman Moskalkova approached Chechnya, asked whether they were kidnapping people, and Chechnya lied and said no. Now why would Chechnya, a part of Russia, lie to its government? Because Chechnya doesn’t want to be there. Chechnya wants to be independent, it’s resisted Russia for a long time and based on their shaky relations, I’m not surprised Chechnya basically just said “go away” to Russia. & yeah, Russia should have been way more active by now, but Moskalkova has been speaking with Putin (to try and start fully investigating the matter (and not just trusting Chechen officials’ word) so I know the West likes berating Russia on its LGBT rights but there are obviously people in the government fighting to protect them, like Moskalkova.
LGBT Rights: Since we’re already here, I want to reaffirm that the West’s pure hatred for Russia on the LGBT community’s behalf may not be as needed. Same-sex activity has been legal since 1993. Gender change has been legal since 1997 (it was also legal in the Soviet Union from 1920-1960 but that’s another matter). And a single person can adopt a child, no matter their sexuality. The situation is complex, I’d like to think it’s moving in a better direction at least in public opinion, but it’s not going to get very far if the West keeps demonizing Russia as it has been ;; rather, the government will probably try to keep rejecting anything “pro-West” at least in part. I could go on about this but there’s actually a really good post here explaining what exactly is going on in Russia & will help you understand why the West hasn’t been handling Russia’s homophobia in the right way (as with most countries)
The Crimean Crisis: or, how the West did and is really messing this up. The general American opinion is that Russia wrongfully invaded Ukraine (Crimea) and refused to leave, making Russia the villain. That’s so drenched in bias that there’s no fact in this. So here is what happened: Crimea was given to Ukraine back in 1954, ignoring the fact that Crimeans overwhelmingly identify as ethnic Russians and align in belief with Russia, not Ukraine. Skip forward to 2014 and Ukraine is trying to pull closer to the West, and, y’know, away from Russia. Since Crimeans didn’t care for this change, they declared themselves independent (which Putin recognized as autonomous) and asked Russia if they could join Russia. This was between Ukraine and Crimea, Russia was just a third-party that answered ‘yes’ to Crimea after they asked. They were a third party acting on behalf of their citizens. Ukraine may not recognize it, but in general, this was the act of Crimea, Russia was only so involved after Crimeans asked Russia to get involved in peacekeeping. And if that’s not enough, there were several protests ( in Russia against using violence in Crimea. I understand that Ukraine has struggled economically since then, but pro-Russian sentiment has always existed in Crimea, and to blame Russia is not compatible with the facts. The situation got out of hand, but Russia was a third-party called in. There’s also been the “Russia wants Crimea back and will invade for it” mindset, which is wrong. Russia literally had the chance to ask for Crimea back when post-Soviet Eastern Europe was being settled and didn’t. They let Ukraine keep it without a word.— Why is this misconception still bad? Because the West (and Ukraine) is still punishing Russia for Crimea’s actions. Ukraine even banned Russia from Eurovision 2017 because their chosen entrant toured Crimea during the crisis. Which, fine, this is between Ukraine and Russia. But the West is still heavily involved in a situation it does not belong in if it won’t even consider the actual facts. Instead, the EU is still sanctioning Russia until, as Merkel has been basically putting it, “Ukraine is resolved”. Which, if we look at the facts, is not Russia’s business. If Ukraine is suffering because of Crimea, take it to Crimea.
I can go on (the mess that is called the US elections, Syria, etc.) but there’s a pattern here where the West either doesn’t handle Russia’s problems right when “calling Russia out” or it jumps to blaming Russia too much/at all. And the public is okay with falling into the “evil Russia” opinion because it’s what a lot of the West grew up with, for all generations. Russia is depicted as wrong and backwards in the media more often than not, once you know the facts.
And not only is the West spinning bad stories on Russia then punishing Russia for them, but there is little focus on the bad things Russia should be accused of. Like, y’know, how Russia is not owning up to its crimes during the Soviet Union (unlike Germany) and not learning more from it. Saying “Russia is not communist anymore” is ignoring the fact that the Communist party still holds some power in Russia - which, 2 Communists in the 170-member national Parliament is too much. In light of how much Soviet Russians caused, there is no room for this. And how the West has reacted to all of this is odd, because it ignored (yeah, ignored) the Holodomor (the man-made famine in Ukraine in the 1930′s, average estimates put the number as high as 10 million deaths) but now that the West is in the know of Eastern European news, Ukraine is viewed as this “weak child in need of help from Big Bad Russia”. And this is just a past example, using a present example of how the West does this skipping around on what it addresses and decides to acknowledge and remember would make this post a lot longer & complex.
So, tl;dr, yes, the West has a lot of misconceptions about Russia, makes the country into the “bad guy”, and more. Not only does it have misconceptions about Russia, at times altering the story completely to fit the “evil” narrative, but the West would be better to stay out until it can be more objective on such major issues. Until it’s better at recognizing what Russia did or didn’t do, because the West is obviously having some issues on fact-checking and understanding Russia. Until it’s better at not just assuming that Russia will always act badly, just because it’s “evil”. It’s geared towards seeing Russia as the anti-West and it’s hindering any real progress in relations. I’m not the first in line to excuse Russia (for whole other reasons), but this bias by the West needs to be addressed and corrected too. It’s not going to work if Russia alone is expected to take responsibility while the West is “always right”. & obviously, this post is in no way complete, I just took the basics and gave modern examples to show patterns.
#;; ask#Thanks for asking!#long post#;; EE politics#politics //#its less than 2k words bless. lol.#i dont excuse russia but.#the west can fuck off.#like yeah. address russia's wrongs.#but how 'bout we understand russia first.#thank you for asking this. it's good that you're seeking more info.

Congrats on 800 followers!! You write beautifully and deserve every one of them and a thousand more 💕🎉
For the celebration, could I get a vanilla milkshake (ship)? Of Percy Jackson or Narnia?
I'm a straight girl, INFP, enneagram 5, hufflepuff student, and daughter of Athena. I really love any kind of art, from painting, to music, to literature, to sculpture, and anything. That doesn't mean I'm good. Even tho I wish I was. I really like to write, it helps me put my thoughts and feelings in order, and words come easier when I write them down than when I try to talk. The most important thing to me are my friends, my loyalty is one of the little things I actually like about myself.
I'm really bored with my life and always wished of something more, so any kind of media that has a good story it's something I'm a fan of. I'm literally waiting just to be old enough so I can go on my own adventure and live a little.
I'm not a very affectionate person, not in a conventional way anyway, I'm not good enough with words to repeat how much people mean to me (even if they really do), and I don't like to be hugged that often, and only if they're really close to me. But I'm always there for anyone that needs me and I'll try to do the best I can to help.
I don't like small talk, I want to have long talks about everything that comes to mind, whether it is the last book you read or a random thought about the stars, or mythological creatures, or aliens, or your deepest secret or some dumb thing that happened some years ago. Whatever, but a real conversation.
Did I forget to say I'm Mexican? Lol, I speak Spanish and we're known for joking around (And it's probably that I punch someone jokingly before I hug them. Yep, not very good at expressing emotions at first. I can be WAY more open once I gained trust).
I like to take things with calm and humor, but if it's something serious I know how to take the situation seriously and give the best advice and "wise" words I can think of. My friends come looking for my advice often lol whether or not they follow it afterwards. I don't like to talk about my problems, because I don't want to worry any of my friends, and even though I could need help, I just hold it in until it passes (I should follow my own advice and talk to someone but OH WELL...)
I really don't know what else to say. I love to read, and I love musicals, and I'm trying to learn how to play guitar, and I'd like someone with good sense of humor but that I know I can trust.
Anyway, congrats again!! You're really talented and I don't know you that well but you seem like an awesome person. If you don't have time to do this, don't worry 'bout it u.u
here’s your vanilla milkshake! I only did it for percy jackson for lack of time, but I hope you enjoy your story with leo valdez all the same - it’s my reckoning you two would get along pretty well...
Leo is definitely always down for an adventure. He’s the kind of person who effortlessly makes the most boring errand into an epic, and sees the excitement in everything around him, but understands exactly what you mean when you say you want to go out there and see what life has in store for you, for real.
You’re both sitting on your bed in your bedroom - it’s not often you get a break from Camp Half-Blood or Camp Jupiter respectively and are able to go back to your human lives, but whenever you get the chance, you seize it and enjoy the peace -, and talking about your biggest wishes and desires ...
(The conversation came naturally and flows just as organically; because Leo is a childish and excitable fool most of the time, but he understands there’s a time for everything, and he can be particularly serious and insightful when he understands it’s time for him to be)
... And you tell him all you really want in life is to go on an adventure, a real one, unpredictable like a rush of blood to the head.
“Well do I have news for you about a place called Camp Jupiter--”
“I don’t mean running from monsters or fulfilling prophecies... I want to see the world with my friends by my side and live beautiful things. One day, when I’m old enough.”
“Who says you aren’t old enough right now?”
“I’m sorry?”
(He’s straightened up from his slouching position on the mattress, and is looking at you with the utmost seriousness in his eyes.)
“I mean it. Who says we can’t go on an adventure, like, right now?”
“Where could you even go?”
“I don’t know. Got a globe laying around somewhere here?”
You comply, and he spins it, and orders you to jab your finger at it whenever you feel like it (which he doesn’t give a real meaning to, because it doesn’t even have one), to determine where you will go.
“... Moscow?”
“Ah, great place for a son of Hephaetus, love the heat out there.”
But needless to say, when Leo gets a spontaneous idea like that, there’s no use in trying to get it out of his head;
so the following week you are to depart on your trip to Russia, and you can’t hide your excitement. Traveling on a whim with your boyfriend might just be the first step to the adventures you were awaiting...
OK, but Mexican solidarity!!! I love my Latin cousins ugh you guys are so much fun,,
Talking shit about half of your respective Camps in Spanish behind their backs (and from Reyna’s half-smiles she miserably fails to conceal, you feel like you might not be the only ones who find this terribly funny)
“Mira a Jason, siempre tan serio y melancólico. Cuenta la leyenda que la mueca se le quedó grabada en la cara.”
“Pobrecito. Igual alguna profecía le delivra de su maldición de gravedad perpetua.”
“¿Y si le voy a contar un chiste?”
“Creo que solo te abofetará, Leo.”
Expressions of affection are rarely overt between the two of you, because you both tend to deflect your real feelings (especially affection or love) via humor and play them off as something “just for laughs”. You’re also big on tough love, so much so that sometimes the others wonder why you’re always playfully hitting each other’s arms as though you hated each other’s guts.
But the truth is simply that you were always raised to express affection in these ways, and get a bit awkward when you’re expected to be upfront about your feelings. Still, you’re both extremely warm and loving, and your “I love you”s simply have to be deciphered.
And no one deciphers them quite like the other half of the pair. It’s a language that only you two understand; that’s why you’re such a good pair.
800 follower sleepover [CLOSED!]

spared.
spared - different -
you don’t know why you’re here but you would like to go home.
when you tell this to the people around the campfire, most of them snort. no shit, says the girl with the beanie, with an accent you don’t recognize.
“be nice,” a woman with red hair says. her eyes fall to your stomach, round, swollen with a baby, and you think you see something like pity in her eyes. “it’s different for them.”
the woman’s name is meg and she explains to you as best she can about what’s happening around you. none of them know why they’re here -- they just are. there’s a... thing? called the entity that none of them have really seen but they all know about. they make sacrifices to it, though that never helps with the trials. never seems to stop the brutality from the killers. the people who are in the forest.
you take a look over your shoulder and there’s multiple faces staring back at you. some human, some mask. all equal unnerving. you shudder, turning away from their cold eyes.
“and... and they kill us?” you ask, wrapping your arms protectively around your stomach.
“yeah,” says meg, and her eyes fall to where your arms are. her voice softens after a long silence, the crackling of the campfire the only thing between you. “we always come back, though. always.”
that’s not all that reassuring but you guess you have to live with it. so you do.
your first trial, you have meg, and the woman with the beanie whose name you’ve discovered is nea, and a man named jake. none of you is really concerned with one another, though meg whispers in a hush what your goal is, how you achieve it. fix the generators. escape. if only one of you is left standing, find the hatch.
it’s simple enough, though hard to keep low with the weight of your belly. your baby is active as ever, roving and moving and making you nauseous. you have to persist, though. you have to survive.
your mouth fills with saliva as you continue to fix the generator, squinting into the darkness. you hear a scream and flinch, hard. medical journals run through your head, ones you read in bouts of paranoia -- stress is bad for the baby. you swallow hard, concentrating on the task at hand, hoping maybe you can tune out the harsh beat of your heart, the moving of your belly beneath your hoodie.
you hear her footsteps before you see her. you jerk away from the generator, rising a little more slowly than you’d like, and go to run. as you do, you run smack into her.
she’s a beast of a woman, taller than any you’ve ever seen. the muscles in her arms are hulking, huge, and her face is hidden from you by an eerie rabbit mask. your heart is your throat, feeling like a deer trapped in the ends of a headlight -- death is inevitable and you flinch hard, wincing into your chest, cupping your tummy.
“it is girl?” asks the woman, the killer. you open your eyes slowly, harshly panting, and you look up at her. she has an axe over her shoulder but she doesn’t bring it down on you, doesn’t cleave your shoulder.
“what?” you breathe between your gasps. she moves towards you and you skitter back like a bug, feet slipping over leaves. she stops and as your eyes draw down her arm that’s moved, you realize she was holding her filthy palm out.
you swallow, watching it closely. slowly, she points a finger, and you follow the path she directs you to. to your belly.
“it is girl?” she asks again and it’s then that you hear her heavy accent, the thick european dripping from every syllable. you don’t know where specifically it’s from. russia?
“please don’t hurt us,” you sob out, hysteria flubbing through you, a wave of nausea hitting you again. you throw up in the space between you two, your fingers digging into your sides. you wish you could claw your baby out, deposit it somewhere that is not here. you hunch into yourself, back arched over yourself and oh, god, why isn’t she killing you?
her hand finds your shoulder and the gasp you let out sounds like a broken windbag, wheezing, awful, your throat dry from vomiting. her hand is huge, envelops your whole shoulder and you tremble like a leaf in her grasp.
“baby is girl?” jesus fucking christ, why does she keep asking you that? what the fuck is wrong with her? what if yes is the wrong answer?
“yes,” you whimper out, sniffling pathetically, snot and tears making clear lines on your dirty face as you look up at her. “yes, yes, it’s a girl.”
her hand remains on your shoulder but she says nothing else. you wonder if she can say anything else. her hand leaves your shoulder and slides across your body, carelessly breezing past your breast. it rests over what little bit of your tummy is exposed and you’re tempted to shove her back, away, but you’re too focused on that axe. making sure it doesn’t twitch, that she doesn’t swing.
the baby moves, pushing against flesh on your belly. your watery eyes flicker from her axe to her face. you can’t see her expression, her mouth not even giving anything away. finally, her hand slides away from you and she bows her chin, almost in... deference? your brow furrows and you try to sniff up your snot.
her head tilts to the left, then she swings around on a foot. her back is suddenly facing you and you hear her sweet hum, heavy feet traversing quietly over the fallen bushes. you reach up, rubbing at your sticky face, bewildered.
“what. the. fuck?” you hear a whisper and jump, twisting. nea is staring at you from behind a tree, eyes bugged out of her head, mouth hanging open. you shake your head, telling her without words you don’t understand either. “fuck, newbie, you might have a one-up ‘r somethin’. c’mon, let’s fix this generator.”
you nod slowly, looking up. the woman is gone, completely obscured in the dark. you creep over to the generator, squatting down as well as you can, nea joining you. you can feel her eyes on the side of your face wondering, questioning. you don’t understand either.
a little baby girl, thinks the huntress as she watches the survivors from afar, obscured in the trees. it has been so long since i have seen a little baby girl...

Spanish Gold in Moscow
@hetaliamondaychallenge September 28: “Chaos isn’t meant to be understood”.
Category: Fanfic.
Pair: RusSpa (Russia x Spain).
Words: 2.073.
Genre: Historical, Drama, angst, shounen-ai.
Note(s): During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) the Sencond Spanish Republic was completely ignored by Europe, while the fascist that had rebealed were helped by some militar forces. Spain was basically used as a test game of the military armament and strategy before the 2WW. The only country that gave real help to the Republic was the USSR. To finance the war, the government spent all the Spanish gold.
1938
With an absolute ill look in his face, Spain, who still liked to considerate himself as the Second Spanish Republic, moved his gaze to the door that opened a few seconds before.
Nations could perceive other nations in a certain rate, so he wasn’t really surprised when the other entered the room; he had sensed him from far away, knowing he was leading to his position. Weary eyes without the so-called typical Spanish shine looked at the other, a little smile crossing his feverish face.
- Buenos días, Rusia.
Right in front of him, heavy, enormous and clearly powerful, the actual leader of the giant Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Russia, stared back at him with his famous sweet smile. Spain didn’t have known him till a pair of centuries ago, but he knew about this certain characteristic even before personally meeting him. He heard from France, England, Prussia, Austria and even Denmark about this “gentle look monster” that was so big and terrifying in the east.
Anyway, Spain didn’t have really hated this guy even once; he was actually grateful for his performance during the Napoleonic wars, though. If it wouldn’t have been for the Russian forces, France’s troops wouldn’t have retired from his vital territory and he wouldn’t have regained his independence. He sighed, trying to get rid of the thoughts of the past.
He was now, currently, going to lose his independence against his own people, in the middle of the worst civil war he had ever have –and Spain was certainly a country that had endured quite some civil wars-.
A strong ache tortured his mind while he suffered a new wave of deaths. Every time his people died, his body would burn and a painful sensation split him in two. They were dying at that very moment, out there, in the valley of the Ebro, killing each other in a battle that had been going on for months. He nearly cried, but couldn’t afford doing it in front of the power that was standing over there, staring at him with a complicated look in his eyes.
After a few moments, Russia, still smiling even if Spain’s looks were terrible, spoke with a calmed voice. – How are your wounds? he had asked.
A quick smile was formed in the Spaniard’s mouth, quite ironic.
- Well, my right arm has grown up again, so I can’t complain.
Russia stared at the renewed arm, where a few days ago only a stump could have been appreciated. They, nations, received wounds just like humans but their bodies weren’t actually the same. If they were cut, they would recover; if they lost blood, after resting for a while they’d be up again; if they were burn till ashes, they would start to be reborn just like a Fenix. If they were killed, they wouldn’t die.
Only another nation could kill one.
Even if Spain had lately started to question if a nation could kill itself, just like how he was feeling during these days in which he thought he was actually going to be destroyed by his own people.
Russia’s hand reached him and touched his back. He jumped for a moment, sored. He then relaxed, looking far away and not giving attention to the hands that touched his still bleeding injuries.
When a certain happening was so bad, so traumatic, that it gave the nations nearly-coma state, the injuries would still remain bleeding some time. Sometimes it lasted days, sometimes centuries. Those were produced by the bombing, the Biltz, in Guernica, and they still bleed after a year.
He trembled, just by remembering it. The hand in his back made him shiver in pain, but it was the most comforting thing he could afford to have those days, so he didn’t say anything.
Then, he gained composure and faced the other. - What are you doin’ here, anyway? I thought you were going back at your place for some bureaucracy stuff.
Russia remained silent.
That silence made Spain worry.
He didn’t hate Russia at all. He was nice to him, and every time they had met he could only see a true innocence behind the brute and scary dude everyone saw. He liked him quite a bit, and he lately, during his few peaceful years with a Republic, found out that he was such an intelligent and interesting chat partner. Thanks to the leftist ideology of his government the relations with the Soviet Union had been pretty good, so they had become nearly friends at this point.
He even had became the only nation helping him in this suicidal situation.
During civil wars Spain, normally, stayed apart and watched his people decide his fate. He disliked choosing between his beloved people, so que stayed aside.
This time, he couldn’t.
He had seen what happened with Italy after the Great War. The fascism grow up and ate Ita-chan and Romano completely. The brutality that came with it made Spain shiver from his position in the neighbour peninsula. He didn’t recognise his cute Italian brothers with those black shirts and that dark look in their face. Then it expanded to Germany and developed into the National Socialism, which happened to be even worse. A virus was expanding all over Europe and even reached his brother, Portugal.
Spain could have seen it coming. He even spoke with a few general of the army and old requetés, he tried to create a flexible government just to evade the incoming clash. But it was all in vain.
The military coup happened, and while it wasn’t effective, war broke out.
It may be pathetic coming from a country that used to be a world power but, this time, Spain feared his people. That’s why he stayed with the republicans. That’s why he suddenly started dying from the insides.
And while Spain was in that desperate situation, Europe didn’t mind at all and, trying to avoid a Second World War, signed a No Intervention Pact in which 27 countries swore not to intervene in his civil war. That had broken Spain’s heart, who found himself suddenly isolated and left apart, left to die alone. It was even worse when, even if knowing it, the United Kingdom looked away while the Nazi Germany and Mussolini’s Italy broke that pact and helped the rebels. He couldn’t believe England’s coward attitude.
But it was kinda worst when he watched his closest friends actually attack him, help the fascist rebels.
First, the Italian brothers; then, Germany, Austria and Prussia under the name of the Third Reich. Portugal also attacked the Republic by sending his Viriatos and even the American self-proclaimed Hero’s Ford Company sent help to destroy him. All his old friends were against him. He, on the other hand, only received some fusils from Mexico and a few airplanes from a very scared France, who refused to send more help. The only one who lent him it’s power was the Soviet Union, or preferably Russia.
He still remembered when he had met Romano in the site of Toledo. Romano had been excited, he spoke about autarchy, about having a great colonial empire, and about things such as war being the way through the future. His golden eyes sparkled when he had, for the first time in centuries, hugged Spain.
If you join us I promise we’ll bring this to an end. –he had whispered, while speaking about how great it was being a fascist country.
He had been then, suddenly, pulled apart by a giant body that happened to be his ally, Russia, who looked at Romano with electric violet cruel eyes. Spain could have said something to stop a conflict, but, when he looked at Roma, he couldn’t longer see his cute tomato-like crybaby. In the past Romano would have cried and call him to save him but, then, he held his gaze prideful, strong and dangerous in front of the terrible Russia.
A bombing had made them react and, when he came to himself, he was with the International Brigades heading to Madrid.
Remembering all of that made him feel sick and hided half of his face while looking at the floor with a tired smile.
He suddenly had an urge to vomit, but he managed to stay calm and recover a moment later. – Sorry, I beg you excuse me. My house is total chaos now, no, wait… EUROPE is a total chaos now, haha…! I don’t understand how or why, but it makes me think things a way too much.
- Chaos isn’t meant to be understood.
That statement made Spain stay quiet and, then, he looked with his nearly dead green eyes at the other.
- I’m going to ask again, Russia. –he said, this time, cautious-. Why are you here?
- You haven’t paid me to help you lately.
And if he had frozen before, this time Spain had lost all the blood of his veins.
He started sweating. He wanted to cry, but he couldn’t.
- Y-yeah, I-I know… It’s just that all the gold that I’ve been keeping in my reserves has been already taken to Moscow, so I-I…
Russia’s voice was sweet but cold as ice. – You’re not going to pay for my services.
The Spaniard’s eyes opened at his full.
- No! Don’t even think ‘bout that! I’ll pay, I swear it! It’s just that, right now, my people are starving, we don’t have armament and the industry it’s all stopped. I can’t now but, when we win, I’ll return what I owe! A-and I’ll even make it double…! I’ll work hard, I swear. But, now, with all my old gold gone, I…
- So you’re not paying.
The calmed voice made Spain feel like if he were to hyperventilate. He felt like crashing. Like glass about to break.
- I’m not. –he confirmed then.
The taller man stood up, and Spain followed him, clearly desperate.
- Y-you can’t leave me, Russia! If I don’t have your help I’m lost! –after hearing those words the Slavic turned around and faced him, with his so-typical smile in his face.
- So you’ll pay me?
The brunette looked away, clearly ashamed. – I have… nothing to pay you with. B-but I promise..!
- Нет. You can pay me. –response that took an ¿hah..? out of Spain. Russia laughed in a calmed way and then, explained. – Even if you don’t have anything you still possess your body, da?
And Spain’s eyes darkened.
Ah, true. Nation prostitution.
It had been a while.
It used to be so common in the past that he didn’t know why he felt so surprised when Russia suggested it. It may have been ‘cause Russia is fairly younger than himself, or ‘cause the times have changed. He had been so accustomed to it even when he was a child that it wasn’t so much of a surprise finding out that some new power wanted to take advantage of his position to appeal to this. Spain could easily remember when he was forced to be Rome’s or the Islamic Empire’s sex-boy, or even Turkey’s or France’s. Well, he had also been like that with some nations; but, well, let he who is without sin cast the first stone, and he was also a sinner after all.
He looked back at Russia and sighed. – Is this old damaged body worth all the gold I could have had afford to pay you weeks before? –and Russia’s aura became surprisingly pink, just like a happy kid’s.
- And much more! I’m happy so I’ll help you.
And leaned forward to kiss Spain’s forehead. Spain rised an eyebrow, but let him be, anyway. He needed help and Russia was eager to help him only receiving some affectionate touches here and there in return. There were worst things he could have had to do.
Another wave of pain drove him crazy sored and let himself drown in the straw bed he had been using before. He took a deep breath.
Then, when the fever started to be stable again, spoke directly to Russia.
- Well, then, how about a quickie? I have to go back to the battlefield in 30 minutes and I think I could come back quite worse than now, ha ha. –he had laughed, with his shiny –and now tiny- smile.
Russia smiled back, getting rid of his Soviet general military hat while getting closer to the sun-burned skinned nation. He sat, and grabbed the other’s cheeks with a gloved strong hand. That tranquil smile crossed his happy face.
- Let me tell you this is going to be a payment in instalments.

The Tales Of The Winter Soldeir and Winter Witch
Book1, Chapter 1
3 Years before Bucky was drafted
February 5th, 1940
Ramona’s POV
Putting my stacks of paperwork on my desk ready for tomorrow as my work day comes to an end, I find myself sighing in relief after a long day of again getting nowhere with the ‘Jeweler Case.’ It seems to be a never-ending case as this is our second week trying to solve the jewelry store robbery and who did what and when, why, and so on.
“Lover boy is on the phone Ramona.” Peggy gloats with a smug grin on her face purposely making sure the speaker was not covered.
“Like I’ve told you almost a hundred times Carter, he is not my lover boy.” I exclaim emphasizing the word ‘not’ with an eye roll and taking the phone off her. “Why hello Buck, what would you be calling to ask the 3rd time today?” I ask with a slight chuckle whilst throwing a rubber at Peggy who is winking at me.
“Just checking before I leave to walk you home doll, did you bring a jacket today? It’s freezing outside and I can see your jacket still hung up, would hate for ya to catch a cold especially when you live with someone with an immune system like Steve.” Bucky says, his Brooklyn drawl being clearer than ever.
“You know, I do have more than one coat Buck?” I ask. “Just checking Mona, I didn’t walk you today so I didn’t see what you left in. Just seen what you woke up in or should I say what you didn’t wake up in.” Bucky asks with a hint of flirting and a hint of cockiness in his voice.
“Yes, and if you carry on with your Mr, big ego act that’ll be the last time you see that, Barnes.” I retort.
“Okay we both know that’s not the truth. Anyway, I’m bouta leave doll, will be there in half an hour, will wait in the usual spot.”
“Not true but okay, see you soon Buck” I say trying not to drop the phone from between my ear and shoulder whilst locking my cabinets. “See you soon, darlin'.” Bucky finishes before putting the phone down.
Bucky and I had known each other since being 6 and 9 being introduced by our friend Steve. Steve had been like a big brother growing up, Sarah being nothing but welcoming to my family when we fled to Brooklyn from Russia. Sarah and my mother would both take turns between childcare; me, my three younger sisters and brother being at the Rogers’ every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and half the day Sunday whilst mother would go to work at the laundry where Sarah also worked.
And obviously Steve would be at our house every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Every Sunday we would have dinner at the Rogers’ with our mother. Our father stayed in Russia with mother wanting to flee a situation I wasn’t told about until I was old enough to understand. Father was abusive and an alcoholic and had a job mother didn’t agree with, but we were never told what that job entailed and whilst I found myself wondering every so often, curiosity never killed the cat and I was enormously proud of that.
Bucky, Steve, and I were best friends growing up with Bucky and Steve being stupidly overprotective of me even when I became a fully trained agent and officially full time at SSR. My mother never 100% agreed with my job and whilst Bucky and Steve questioned it at first for my safety, but once they realised I could handle myself (after witnessing me defend myself against a couple of not so nice men who got a bit too close for my comfort) they were 100% supportive of my job, especially Bucky with one less person to save from the allies and one more person to help when Steve found himself on the not so nice ends of the alleys face first into the trash cans.
It was around 18 years old I'd started developing feelings for Bucky, not that I’d never admit it to him, I was far too proud and full of denial for that because he would never go for a girl like myself; at least that’s what I thought until I found myself intertwined in his sheets with his body wrapped around mine after one passionate, unexpected night a year later.
This went from happening every few weeks, to every two weeks, to maybe once a week to every few nights and I’m still in denial that he would ever want to make things official.
I question whether I want to become his girl, especially with my line of work and seeing my parent’s relationship be the bane of their lives when I was younger. All I’ve ever seen is relationships fail and that is why I refuse to put myself through the pain of one. I care about Bucky, he’s the one person who no matter how rotten the day be I’m guaranteed to have a smile on my face when I see him.
When Sarah died both mine and Bucky's families became close ensuring two big family units to support Steve and even a year and a half after she passed; me, Bucky and Steve got a shared apartment together. Sure, it was no five stars, but it was home and as long as the three of us had each other that was all that mattered. Steve was aware of mine and Bucky's “situation” but chose not to get involved.
Stuck in my own little world I'd not realised half an hour had passed and Bucky would be waiting for me so after grabbing my coat and bag I made sure to say bye to Peggy and arrange coffee and breakfast before work tomorrow morning where we could discuss some of the cases privately, seen as though we knew we were massively undermined at SSR we got a lot of thinking and solving done mostly when we were alone together where no male could underestimate or interrupt us.
Walking down out of the doors I spotted Bucky with a glowing grin on his face, it took everything to keep my footing steady. “Hello, beautiful. How would you feel about hot chocolate and dinner on me at our spot?” Bucky asked holding his arm out to me which I gladly took.
“Gee buck, almost sounds like you’re asking me on a date!” I tease earning a nudge to my side causing a fit of laughter.
“One day doll, I’ve already asked several times but one day I will get a yes out of ya.” Bucky retorted.
“I’ll hold you to that Buck, how was your day?” I asked clinging to his arm.
“The usual, woke up to a fine dame next to me, crappy coffee, got to work. Left work, pulled Steve out of an ally, nagged Steve how he’s not ten men and should think before he acts, walked the little punk back to the apartment, read the paper and now I'm here to pick up you. How bout you doll?” Bucky explains with a hint of sarcasm.
“Same old, really strugglin’ with this case I just can’t seem to understand how a whole jewelry store could be robbed without even a fingerprint left behind nor how someone could even get a hold of that damn gas. How many men was it today? Did you or Steve get hurt?” you ask with a sigh giving Bucky's arm a reassuring squeeze.
“Hey Mona, don’t worry too much about it, we both know you’ll get to the bottom of it like always and I’m sure whoever’s guilty will regret it when they have to face the bottom of your shoe. Two guys, managed to reason with them after giving one a right hook.” he winked.
“Oh, I know I will, thanks Buck I can always rely on you for some good old confidence boosting. I give up telling the jackass he’s gotta stop this, I may as well be talking to a brick wall!” I finish with a chuckle. As we walk into the bright, retro diner Bucky holds the door open for me before guiding us both to a booth. As we take our coats off a waitress comes to us.
“Well would ya look who it is, only our two favorites! Where’s Rogers tonight?” Our waitress Nancy asks.
“Probably at home bathing his black eye, sulking about his fight whilst planning his next one.” I exclaim earning a laugh from both Bucky and Nancy.
“I don’t even gotta ask, usual for you two?” Nancy asks pointing between us both with her pen.
“Of course!” Bucky says with a grin
“That’s two hot chocolates and a portion of fries coming up!” Nancy exclaims.
“Thanks, Nance!” we both call.
Me, Bucky and Steve have been coming to this diner since we were in school. Their hot chocolates were practically the glue to our friendships. As I looked up from my hands, I spotted Bucky looking at me with a smile on his face. “What’s got you all smiley?” I ask with a grin.
“Just you!” Bucky exclaims grin turning wider.
“Are you purposely trying to make me blush?” I ask with a chuckle feeling warmth go to my face praying my blusher somewhat cancels the blushing.
“Always doll, I just like to make ya blush and to know I’ve still got it.” Bucky explains with a cocky smirk. Damn you and your godly smile Barnes!
“Glad my embarrassment gives you an even bigger ego boost Buck!” I laugh before our food and drinks get set down and we start tucking in.
*An hour later, on the way home from diner*
“Thank you for that Buck, it was fun. Was nice to be sat anywhere but that office.” I explain.
“S’alright doll, anything to put a smile on your face. I wanted to actually talk to you. This, us been goin' on a little while too long now.” Bucky stopped walking and turned me to face him taking both my hands in his.
“Are you saying what I think you’re saying?” I ask feeling my heart rip into two.
“Yeah, doll.” he grins.
“Oh okay, no I totally get it Buck we’re kinda not going anywhere and I’m really not ready to put myself into a relationship right now and you wanna move on or you’ve already found a girl. I get it, no hard feelings.” I say holding back the tears.
“Woah doll, no no! You’re completely taking it the wrong way. Mona, I like you, scratch that I’m crazy bout you. I understand you don’t wanna take this further just yet, but I can wait,” he says cupping my face in his hands looking into my eyes.
“Buck, I appreciate that so much but there’s so many better girls throwing themselves at you and you’re going to waste them just to wait for me? I could make you wait years and I wouldn’t want that.” I explain placing my hands over his.
“I don’t want them other girls, I want you. You’re the most beautiful, loyal, caring, and bad ass girl I’ve ever met. I will wait as long as you want me to if it means I can have you. Just please tell me you feel the same.” he begs his eyes searching my face for any sign of feeling the same.
“I do Buck, I have for a while.” I admit a small smile making its way to my lips. Bucky gently strokes his thumb across my bottom lip before pulling me in for a sweet, loving kiss. It was suddenly like it was just the pair of us that existed, nobody mattering in that moment but us two. Bucky pulled away keeping his hands on my face, placing his forehead against mine. “I got you, doll” he says before pulling me into his chest resting his chin on my head, wrapping his arms around my shoulders tightly; sighing contently.
“I got you too, Buck.” I reply wrapping my arms around his waist and smiling contently to myself.
“Let’s get home to the punk before he can’t help but lead himself to another alley huh.” Bucky says whilst linking our arms together and directing us both out of the park.
“We should probably check the alleys on our way back Buck.” I suggest
“Glad we're on the same page doll.” Bucky chuckles.

I was thinking that the soul's law of attraction is probably pretty unstoppable even concerning partners, so like, if someone didn't love you back then it's not some mistake or human misunderstanding that you or they need to fix.
To find one's soulmate looks something like 2 souls flying towards each other from opposite ends of the galaxy to join their physical selves together in a collision force so brutal you're stuck like that and if that's not what yours looks like then maybe that ain't your soulmate?

A message crucial to promote the awareness of your personal role in the collective will become evident over the next three weeks. You will come to ask yourself, What am I doing with my life?

Puppets Extras - Re-Homed
Once Dixie finally got the chance to think, he nearly started screaming. He figures that New Jersey would not appreciate that, seeing as the state was driving through the dark roads of late evening.
"What's wrong, Uncle Dixie?" Virginia asks.
"What was I thinkin'?!" he exclaims, throwing his arms in the air.
"We did all agree wit you, so you're thinking something right," New York comments, typing something on his phone before setting it aside.
"What are you worried about?" Quebec questions in her heavily accented English.
"Alaska," Dixie admits, "she's a youngin and shouldn't be goin' out on monster hunts. I'm afraid she's gonna get hurt. The rest of the states can hold their own, but I worry 'bout her."
"Why don't we go send her to stay with someone else?" New York suggests.
"Like who? Canada is gone, and Aussie has enough goin' on as it is. He just got attacked a few days ago, he can't take nobody else. And I don't trust UK or those damn European Countries as far as I can throw 'em," Dixie replies sullenly. The car goes quiet.
"Well, what about Soviet?" New Jersey offers.
"Are y'all goin' crazy?" Virginia exclaims.
"No. Just...hear me out. You remember West and his stunt during the Cold War? Soviet didn't say a word to the other countries and didn't use any of us against Dad, not even as blackmail. The officials didn't know what had happened or that the states had personifications. There's a reason why Dad still respects him and told us not to hold it against him," New Jersey explains, not taking his eyes off the road. The other passengers go quiet.
"Besides, Russia spoke highly of him, and it would be far enough away to be safer," New Jersey continues, "and doesn't Russia have like 14 siblings or something? They're probably there now, so a large group of adult countries and a late superpower. Sounds pretty safe to me."
"Besides, Hawaii would be going with her. She'll keep an eye on Alaska and keep her outa trouble," New Yorks adds.
"But we haven't known Russia for very long, and the commies could do somethin' to her while she's there," Virginia counters.
"The only reason Russia was here was because of Soviet! Soviet sent him here to help Dad. Besides, it may not be the best option, but it might be the only one we have! Whatever is out here took down Canada, Massachusetts, Russia, Louisiana, and Texas! We shouldn't be taking extra risks right now. It might be better if we have her staying somewhere where she is safe and protected," New Jersey defends.
Virginia opens her mouth to deny his suggestion but closes her mouth a few moments later. Quebec puts a hand on her shoulder in a show of support.
Dixie laughs. Their heads whip toward him in concern, and he wipes the tears off his face. "She did always want a grandfather. What'd she say? A dadooshke?" he asks.
"Дедушка," New York corrects automatically.
"That's what I said," Dixie replies, and New York shoots him a skeptical look.
"I'll send you the phone number," New York suggests, "and you can call him about it."
"Now?" Dixie asks. New York rolls his eyes.
"Yes, I need to know our plans before I start trying to buy plane tickets," New York replies, retrieving his phone, and his fingers fly around the screen.
A few moments later, Dixie's phone buzzes and he lifts it to see a contact number.
"Thanks, kiddo," he says before tapping it. He grows hopeful that this was a feasible plan to keep Alaska out of trouble. Now he just has to make sure it would work.
The phone rang for a few moments before someone picked up.
Someone answers. Dixie doesn't recognize the voice and the language sounds vaguely Slavic in nature.
"Howdy. This is Dixie with the states. I was wantin' to talk to Soviet," Dixie introduces, wincing at the rushed introduction. He hears someone shout something in unintelligible to him, but the tone gave him the impression the speaker was calling for someone, hopefully, Soviet.
"Give me one moment," the person on the other end mumbles before covering the microphone and shouting again. There is some audible fumbling before the phone is handed off.
"Hello?" Soviet asks.
"Howdy! This is Dixie," Dixie replies enthusiastically.
"Hello. Why are you calling?" Soviet questions.
'Right to the point, okay,' Dixie thinks.
"I was wondering if you would be able to do us Americans a huge favor," Dixie prompts.
"What kind of favor? Aren't you staying together in the main house?" Soviet questions, curious.
"No, we ain't there no more. I'm afraid that the search party is in real danger, and we're rushin' down there as we speak, but we have someone with us that can't stay."
"What are you implying?" Soviet questions.
"Would you be willin' to house Alaska for a while? At least until this is over. I know this is sudden, and trust me, it ain't my first choice, but I'm graspin' at straws. She's too little to fend for herself, and keeping her with us puts her in danger. I just don't want her gettin' hurt."
"...how old is she?"
"She is the human age of 7-ish, right Yorky?" Dixie replies, and New York nods in confirmation, "yeah, 7."
"Will she have an escort with her?"
"Yes. Hawaii, the oldest of them states, will be going with her if you're willlin' to house 'em."
"I would like to talk to them before making a decision," Soviet replies.
"Hey Joisey, the others are saying that they need to stop for gas and to swap drivers. Any exits near us?" New York interjects, typing away on his phone.
"It's Jersey, York. And yeah, tell them I'll pull off on Exit 352," New Jersey remarks, moving to the right lane, and the cars behind them follow.
"I'll give them the phone in just a few minutes if ya don't mind the wait," Dixie comments.
"Do what you must," Soviet replies. Dixie puts himself on mute and helps navigate and direct New York's directions from the maps.
Once they are stopped and the states step out to stretch their legs, Dixie walks the phone over to Hawaii, who has Alaska attached to her hip.
"Has New York told you about the plan?" Dixie asks.
"Yes. I don't like it, but it will keep Alaska safer. Will I be able to talk with USSR?" Hawaii replies, sounding apprehensive.
"Yeah. I got him on the phone here," Dixie replies, unmuting the phone and handing it to Hawaii. Hawaii introduces herself as Alaska's current guardian with America absent. After a few more minutes of talking, she hands the phone down to Alaska, who takes it shyly.
"Hello?" she says into the phone. She is quiet for a moment until her eyes light up and she gasps dramatically.
"You're Mr. Soviet! You're Mr. Russia's papa, right?" she asks enthusiastically. Dixie assumes that Soviet says yes because Alaska begins enthusiastically talking into the phone as if he was already family.
"Hi!! I'm Alaska and I'm 61 whole years old! But daddy says that I should say I'm 7 'cuz the humans don't understand how years work. It's so weird! Are you really Mr. Russia's dad? Mr. Russia is very nice. According to Daddy, he's my papa. Does that mean that you are my grandpa?!" Alaska rattles off, bouncing in place with a huge grin on her face. She gasps aloud and exclaims, "I've always wanted a grandpa!"
"Okay 'Laska, darlin'. I think that's enough," Dixie says gently, taking the phone from the child's hands and hoping that she hadn't scared away the late superpower on the other side.
"Are y'all still there?" Dixie asks into the phone, hesitant.
"I will house them for as long as you need," Soviet replies, "and I wish to see Alaska in the future after this is over."
Dixie feels a weight being lifted from his back. "Thank you," he says with a sigh of relief.
"She reminds me of Russia when he was young. I would be happy to take care of her and whoever must help escort her here," Soviet offers.
"Oh thank the Lord above," Dixie mutters under his breath before returning the phone to his ear. "That would be amazing. Thank you. When can we send her?" he says.
"As soon as you can. Inform me when they are expected to land so I may be there to escort them to my home," Soviet replies.
"New York will get y'all all set up with the details, but we hope to have them there by the end of the week," Dixie promises.
"Okay, I will see them then. Was there anything else you need?" Soviet replies.
"Nope, that's it. Thank you again for your help."
"It is not a problem. All I ask in return is that my son is able to come home. Goodbye, Dixie."
"Bye," Dixie says and he hangs up the phone, feeling more accomplished than he had in the past few days. He breathes a long sigh of relief.
"Hey, Alaska?" Dixie calls.
"What?" Alaska replies.
"How would you like to stay with Mr. Soviet for a little while with Hawaii?" Dixie suggests.
Alaska gasps and pulls her hands to her mouth. "Really?!" she squeals. Dixie nods, and Alaska hugs him around the leg before jumping into Hawaii's arms.
"YAY!" she cries in victory and throws her hands in the air in excitement.
'She'll be safer there than with us. At least for now,' Dixie thinks, and feels the relief nearly send him to his knees.
Hawaii and Alaska have tickets directly to Russia a few hours later and were to board a plane early the next morning. Dixie pushes down any worries. If anything happens, Hawaii is capable and regardless, they weren't making themselves targets, he assures himself.
The goodbye the next morning is quick. It's a lot faster than what Dixie would've preferred under normal circumstances, but they have a long way to go to get to Colorado and they didn't have time for unnecessary stops.
As soon as the pair disappear behind the automatic doors of the airport doors, they drive on with brief waves of goodbye. Dixie hopes he made the right choice.

Alone Amongst the Gum Trees Part 3 - It Was Murdoch All Along
NOTE - this article has been migrated to Medium. As of 2021, A Taswegian Abroad will be closed down, and all of my writing will be published on my Medium profile.
“For some time, Australia’s democracy has been slowly sliding into disrepair. The nation’s major policy challenges go unaddressed, our economic future is uncertain and political corruption is becoming normalised. We can’t understand the current predicament of our democracy without recognising the central role of Murdoch’s national media monopoly.
There is no longer a level playing field in Australian politics. We won’t see another progressive government in Canberra until we deal with this cancer in our democracy.”
- Kevin Rudd - THE CASE FOR COURAGE
Foreword
I started this as a brain dump on July 25th, 2016 just before I flew back to Australia for 4 weeks. I decided to wait to finish it as an “Alone Amongst the Gum Trees” piece after the 2016 US election as it would have directly impacted the outcome.
That was the plan, anyway. I forgot entirely that I had written this draft for almost 5 years. The next thing you know: it’s early 2021, I’m married, have a dog, a car, and my first child is due in August.
My last political opinion piece was from April 11, 2016: a piece on how Bernie Sanders was being treated in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election.
So what happened from mid-2016 to early 2021? I didn’t jump back down the political commentary rabbit hole. No more rants on Tumblr blogs. No angry posts on Facebook. The odd spicy tweet about the current election happening between my old home (Australia), my new home (Canada) and the messed up cousin next door (United States). I instead chose to divert my love of writing to sports (see https://thefiftyfooty.com/), technology, and music.
From a political standpoint I chose to mostly stop talking, and to listen. Now don’t become misconstrued: I did not ignore it. I was very active over the Provincial and Federal Canadian elections of 2015 and 2019, I followed the unprecedented US political climate very closely given our proximity to the United States (and learned a lot in the process), and I voted in the most recent 2019 Australian election (my third from Toronto since leaving in 2012).
If I take a step back - I still need to be self-critical: I was defeated and I surrendered to the tidal-wave of the far-right. I was watching the US tear itself in two over race, alternative facts, and radical ideology. I was watching the UK go down a similar path with Brexit and Boris Johnson. I was watching my beloved homeland of Australia continue to confusingly elect damaging conservative governments despite the polls, trends, movements and more indicating it was time for a change.
As I matured into my late 20′s and now early 30′s (*gulp*) I was asking myself: was this how it was going to be? Did the western world just decide “we’re done with progressive views, let stick it in reverse for a bit and see how we go”? If that was true, then why did Canada buck this trend with Trudeau in 2015 & 2019? Why was New Zealand thriving under Arden after 2017 and 2020?
I went to a dark place on this.
But then something amazing happened. Enter former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd talking about wanting a royal commission into Rupert Murdoch and his News Corp empire who control 70% of print media in Australia.
Did he say 70% of all print media in Australia?
I STRONGLY recommend taking 15 minutes to watch this video. It will do a much better job of painting the scene than I ever could. If not, you can still read on through.
youtube
After doing some looking into this: all I can say is that I didn’t have to dig very far to have my fire reignited. All I can think about now is this #MurdochRoyalCommission
My world view has changed, and what I am about to write next will explain a few things that I hope will change yours too.
This is not a left vs right piece. This is not a blame, shame, or complain piece either. I won’t curse or abuse, because this is a self reflection, a cry of encouragement, and a call to action to all who live in and want to protect the political integrity of democracy around the world.
I am here to explain my thought patterns with the goal of having at least one more person under the thumb of Murdoch’s “beast” realise just what’s going on, and to encourage that person to make more informed decisions knowing the facts.
The Path to En-frightened-ment
February 2014 was the last time I updated the long-form political arm of my blog. Back then as a young man exposed to his first bout of political and social disappointment after the 2013 Australian election - I felt the need to get it all out and I did in a little more linguistically brash Part 2 of “Alone Amongst the Gum Trees”.
I was in an interesting position then. I was a 23 year old finding his place in the world - personally, politically, spiritually, environmentally. I was mostly deciding whether or not I was done with Toronto and it if was time to stay home permanently after spending 3 months back in Australia.
I chose no. I left. I came back to Toronto and the rest is history.
Then one day a couple of years later I got us flights back to Australia for a visit. After nearly 3 years avoiding it (mostly because of my post-election distaste for Australian ignorance), it was time to bite the bullet and go home for a bit.
In 2014 I mentioned:
...let’s talk about Australia, how things changed, how it looked from outside the huge wall that the government apparently has built around the country now, and how it looks from a bloke who literally can not wait to leave again.
I had been anxious about that trip for a while. Not because I hadn’t seen everyone for so long or because it was my wife’s (then girlfriend who became my fiance on that trip) first time visiting, it was because Australia had a chance to move away from the “ignorance, inequality, narrow-minded idiocy, and over-conservatism” I mentioned in 2014.
But we didn’t. Turnbull won the 2016 election. I was so angry at the Australian people. I was so scared of that ignorant, greedy, racist, xenophobic, homophobic, narrow minded, privileged, climate denying creature that seems to be slowly devouring the planet.
From that point in time, all I could think about was some sort of big right-wing populist shift happening across the globe. Outside of the obvious ones: Trump in the USA, Johnson in the UK and Abbott/Turnbull/Morrison in Australia, there were a few more extreme cases: Putin in Russia, Marine Le Pen in France, Viktor Orban in Hungary. Then there’s Cambodia, Brazil, Turkey, Egypt etc who saw this as a huge advantage as well. It may not be the end of a progressive vision of the world but it definitely seemed like the beginning of a big switch.
One thing I learned during my political writing hiatus while serving my self-induced “exile” to Canada is that this country was one of the few blips in this trend. Why did Canada choose to elect Justin Trudeau in 2015, a left wing liberal, after 9 years of Harper’s conservative government? Was it simply because Canadians were good and fair people? Did they just fundamentally understand that you need both conservative and progressive governments to advance society? Perhaps they do, and Canadians are most definitely good and fair people regardless of election results. I am even set to become a Canadian citizen myself (and a dual-citizen overall) in 2021.
So where is this all coming from? Why are the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom on a continued path to segregation, protectionism, populism and division while Canada and New Zealand show basically zero of these tendencies?
The News Corp cancer that is Rupert Murdoch’s media empire is the deciding factor.
So What Does Kevin Rudd Have To Do With It?
Mr. Rudd has been living in the USA for the last 5 years and is firmly spearheading the charge in that Rupert Murdoch’s media behemoth “News Corp” has been unlawfully influencing Australian opinion and undermining elections in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States for close to 3 decades (more predominantly in the last 8 years).
Before you read any further I have to be transparent about my opinions of Kevin Rudd. I accredit his “Kevin 07″ campaign as the catalyst for my interest in politics, my decision to study economics at university, and my ongoing support for progressive policies in every federal and state election since 2007. His work has played a big part in shaping me into the person I am today.
Despite my positive position on Mr. Rudd, I am also disappointed he did not action this during his time as prime minister. However, I am “all in” when it comes to what he is standing for, and that is:
Eradicating monopolies in all forms (be it political, business, journalism, etc)
Improving media literacy to encourage fair and unbiased journalism
Avoiding the pitfalls of Murdoch's divisive influence on the USA happening to Australia
There’s a few key factoids to his claims of mass-media bias:
70% of print media in Australia is owned by ONE MAN: Rupert Murdoch (100% owned in Queensland)
Print media influences the national conversation on a daily basis
Rupert Murdoch owns the biggest YouTube channel in Australia (news.com.au)
The line between fact-based and opinion-based reporting continues to blur, resembling that of CNN (Democrats) and Fox (Republican) extreme partisanship in the USA
All of Murdoch’s papers have backed the Liberal/National party in all 19 out of the last 19 federal and state elections
The ABC is breaching the Australian Broadcasting Act of 1983 by not standing up to Murdoch media purely out of fear
Politicians are not standing up out of fear of character assassination
Whether or not Murdoch is backing left or right, Labor or Liberal, the question still remains:
Do you think it is healthy for a FOREIGN PRIVATE ENTITY to own a monopoly level of influence on a sovereign country’s political system for that private entity to use for their own personal gain through targeted media attacks and character assassinations?
Watch This Space...
There are utter mountains of evidence to accompany these claims, and to make sure you can digest what I am trying to say, I recommend that you sink your teeth into the following videos to validate and truly comprehend the size of the tumour we are dealing with:
Feb 20, 2020 - 1h - Friendlyjordies informal interview with Kevin Rudd
This is right before the Covid outbreak in March, which delayed Mr. Rudd’s ability to move for a formal commission into media bias
Provides excellent insight into the ABC’s lack of action, the opportunism of the Green party, and the complete absence of unbiased reporting in Australia
Feb 18, 2021 - 1h 30m - Kevin Rudd Officially Requesting Royal Commission to Australian Senate
The first 20-30 minutes provide Mr. Rudd’s summary of the situation
The remainder of the video consists of questions from both Labor and Liberal senators about Mr. Rudd’s claims
Mar 1, 2021 - 2m - Kevin Rudd speaks to Sunrise about the Murdoch monopoly
Mr. Rudd went on a national flagship morning show to discuss his concerns regarding News Corp
LISTEN to the questions being asked of him: completely disregarding his valid points and dismissing him as “sour grapes”
Channel 7 is not News Corp, so why try to discredit Mr. Rudd? Fear of being targeted by News Corp
Mar 9, 2021 - 1h - National Press Club: The Case for Courage
Mr. Rudd stands up in front of The National Press Club of Australia to promote the four big challenges facing Australia in his upcoming book “The Case for Courage”
He takes questions from journalists from both Murdoch and non-Murdoch media outlets
As I start to conclude this piece, for action to happen, an independent royal commission is required to get to the facts. Mr. Rudd already gathered over 500,000 signatures that were recently sent to Prime Minister Scott Morrison asking for the royal commission to take place, but this is not enough.
Even former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, a friend of Rupert Murdoch and political opposite to Mr. Rudd, signed the petition and said the following:
Mr Turnbull, a former Liberal prime minister, said the Murdoch media used to be a group of traditional right-leaning outlets but has now become "a vehicle of propaganda."
He told ABC television's Insiders program on Sunday that Australian democracy was suffering for allowing the "crazy, bitter partisanship" of social media to creep into the mainstream.
"We have to work out what price we're paying, as a society, for the hyper-partisanship of the media," Mr Turnbull said.
"Look at the United States and the terrible, divided state of affairs that they're in, exacerbated, as Kevin was saying, by Fox News and other right-wing media."
I recently sent a (somewhat long) letter to Mr. Rudd expressing my concern for the state of Australia’s media landscape, with it culminating in the following questions:
I am deeply moved and inspired by your bravery to take on "the beast" as you so aptly name it, and I want to boldly ask: how can I help? How can I get involved?
I am yet to hear back from Mr. Rudd himself - but I think if you’ve gotten this far, you know what I am about to say next.
I want to help, learn more, or get involved.
That’s amazing. We’re not asking for money, just action. Here’s some ways you can help is stop the rot:

Pair of studies confirm there is water on the moon (Washington Post) There is water on the moon’s surface, and ice may be widespread in its many shadows, according to a pair of studies published Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy. The research confirms long-standing theories about the existence of lunar water that could someday enable astronauts to live there for extended periods. One scientific team found the telltale sign of water molecules, perhaps bound up in glass, in a sunlit region. Another group estimated the widespread prevalence of tiny shadowed pockmarks on the lunar landscape, possible shelter for water ice over an area of 15,000 square miles. Moon water has been eyed as a potential resource by NASA, which created a program named Artemis in 2019 to send American astronauts back to the moon this decade. Launching water to space costs thousands of dollars per gallon.
Colleges Slash Budgets in the Pandemic, With ‘Nothing Off-Limits’ (NYT) Ohio Wesleyan University is eliminating 18 majors. The University of Florida’s trustees this month took the first steps toward letting the school furlough faculty. The University of California, Berkeley, has paused admissions to its Ph.D. programs in anthropology, sociology and art history. As it resurges across the country, the coronavirus is forcing universities large and small to make deep and possibly lasting cuts to close widening budget shortfalls. By one estimate, the pandemic has cost colleges at least $120 billion, with even Harvard University, despite its $41.9 billion endowment, reporting a $10 million deficit that has prompted belt tightening. Though many colleges imposed stopgap measures such as hiring freezes and early retirements to save money in the spring, the persistence of the economic downturn is taking a devastating financial toll, pushing many to lay off or furlough employees, delay graduate admissions and even cut or consolidate core programs like liberal arts departments. “We haven’t seen a budget crisis like this in a generation,” said Robert Kelchen, a Seton Hall University associate professor of higher education who has been tracking the administrative response to the pandemic. “There’s nothing off-limits at this point.”
Thousands Forced to Evacuate From California Fires (NYT) Two firefighters were gravely injured and tens of thousands of Californians were forced to flee their homes on Monday as two new fires ripped through Orange County. About 90,800 residents in Irvine were put under mandatory evacuation orders because of the Silverado Fire and the smaller Blue Ridge Fire, said Shane Sherwood, a division chief for the Orange County Fire Authority. High winds and low humidity fueled the fires’ rapid growth. About 4,000 firefighters were fighting 22 wildfires across the state on Monday, according to Cal Fire, the state’s fire agency. As evening approached, the Silverado Fire had burned about 7,200 acres and the Blue Ridge Fire 3,000 acres. Later Monday night, the Orange County Fire Authority said that the Blue Ridge Fire had grown to 6,600 acres
Why N.Y.C.’s Economic Recovery May Lag the Rest of the Country’s (NYT) New York, whose diversified economy had fueled unparalleled job growth in recent years, is now facing a bigger challenge in recovering from the pandemic than almost any other major city in the country. More than one million residents are out of work, and the unemployment rate is nearly double the national average. The city had tried to insulate itself from major downturns by shifting from tying its fortunes to the rise and fall of Wall Street. A thriving tech sector, a booming real estate industry and waves of international tourists had helped Broadway, hotels and restaurants prosper. But now, as the virus surges again in the region, tourists are still staying away and any hope that workers would refill the city’s office towers and support its businesses before the end of the year is fading. As a result, New York’s recovery is very likely to be slow and protracted, economists said. “This is an event that struck right at the heart of New York’s comparative advantages,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody’s Analytics, a Wall Street research firm. “Being globally oriented, being stacked up in skyscrapers and packed together in stadiums: The very thing that made New York New York was undermined by the pandemic, was upended by it.”
Asylum-Seekers Face Violent ICE Coercion (Foreign Policy) U.S. immigration officers have threatened, pepper-sprayed, beaten, and choked asylum-seekers from Cameroon to coerce them to sign their own deportation orders, the Guardian reports. A coalition of advocacy groups, including the Southern Poverty Law Center, filed a complaint earlier this month describing a “pattern of coercion” by ICE agents at a Mississippi detention center that it called “tantamount to torture.” According to multiple accounts in the complaint, immigration officials used the coercive tactics to compel detainees to sign documents that would waive their rights to further immigration hearings. At least one individual was hospitalized as a result. One man, identified by the initials C.A., described how officers broke his fingers as they sought to force his fingerprint onto a document. “Officers grabbed me, forced me on the ground, and pepper-sprayed my eyes. … I was crying, ‘I can’t breathe,’ because they were forcefully on top of me pressing their body weight on top of me. My eyes were so hot. They dragged me outside by both hands,” said the individual, who was prevented from speaking to his lawyer before signing the document. C.A. was placed on a deportation flight on Oct. 13 but was one of two Cameroonians pulled off the plane moments before takeoff, as an investigation had begun into the allegations of abuse. At least 100 asylum-seekers, including many from Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, were deported on the same flight. For two consecutive years, the Norwegian Refugee Council has deemed Cameroon the world’s most neglected displacement crisis due to an insurgency in the north and a brutal government crackdown on two English-speaking separatist regions. Since 2016, the two conflicts have killed over 3,000 people and displaced more than 700,000.
Belgium’s former King meets estranged daughter for first time (Reuters) Belgium’s former King Albert has met his daughter Delphine for the first time, after she won a seven-year legal battle to prove that he is her father, earning recognition as a princess. The two met Albert’s wife, Queen Paola, last Sunday at their royal residence, the Belvedere castle, in the Brussels suburb of Laeken, the royal household said on Tuesday. “This Sunday October 25, a new chapter has opened, filled with emotions, calm, understanding and also hope,” the king, the queen and Delphine said in a statement. “Our meeting took place at the Belvedere Castle, a meeting during which each of us was able to express, calmly and with empathy, our feelings and our experiences.” “After the turmoil, the wounds and the suffering, comes the time for forgiveness, healing and reconciliation. This is the path, patient and at times difficult, that we have decided to take resolutely together.” Delphine Boel, 52, a Belgian artist, fought a seven-year legal battle to prove that the former king is her father. After a DNA test confirmed that, a court granted her the title of princess earlier this month. Albert, 86, who abdicated six years ago in favour of his son Philippe, had long contested Boel’s claim.
Germany cautions Thai king (Foreign Policy) Pro-democracy protesters in Thailand marched on the German Embassy in Bangkok to deliver a letter asking German authorities to investigate whether King Maha Vajiralongkorn “has conducted Thai politics using his royal prerogative from German soil or not.” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, speaking from Berlin, said the German government was “examining” the issue “and if there are things we feel to be unlawful, then that will have immediate consequences.”
Belarus Opposition Calls General Strike, as Protesters Gird for Long Fight (NYT) When Belarusians took to the streets in the hundreds of thousands in August, after Mr. Lukashenko claimed a re-election victory that was widely seen as fraudulent, many predicted that it was only a matter of days or weeks until the longtime authoritarian leader stepped down. Instead, Mr. Lukashenko and the large swath of the public that is arrayed against him have settled into a drawn-out test of wills, with their country’s future on the line. Protesters continue to turn out in the tens of thousands every Sunday, chanting “Go away!” and waving the white-red-white flag of the opposition. Mr. Lukashenko responds with waves of crackdowns by the police and, backed by Russia, appears determined to wait the protests out. “In such a tense situation, absolutely anything could turn out to be the trigger that topples the system,” said Artyom Shraibman, a Minsk-based nonresident scholar at the Carnegie Moscow Center. “It could end in the course of a week, or it might not die for a year. No revolution has ever gone according to plan.” The authorities’ use of violence to try to put down the protests appears to be escalating, further feeding the anger in Belarusian society. It was a bout of severe police violence early in the uprising that supercharged the protests.
World’s largest IPO shows power of mobile payments in China (Washington Post) Go to a store, hop in a taxi, or even stop by a street peddler’s cart in China, and you will see QR codes strung up on colorful laminated squares. These mobile payment codes are the default way money changes hands in China these days, and the reason Ant Group’s initial public offering is set to be the world’s largest. China’s Ant Group—the Alibaba spinoff behind the ubiquitous blue QR payment codes across the world’s second-largest economy—announced plans on Monday to raise more than $34 billion in a joint listing across Shanghai and Hong Kong. This would trounce last year’s listing of oil titan Saudi Aramco, the reigning IPO champion. Mobile payments have replaced cash and credit cards in China as the preferred payment method, thanks to easy-to-use apps made by Ant Group and its closest rival Tencent. Ant Group’s Alipay and Tencent’s WeChat Pay are similar in spirit to wildly popular U.S. stock trading app Robinhood, in that they are user-friendly enough that anyone with a smartphone and bank account can make complicated financial transactions with a click or swipe.
China sanctions U.S. weapons manufacturers (Foreign Policy) China will impose sanctions on three U.S.-based weapons manufacturers after the U.S. State Department approved the sale of $1.8 billion worth of weapons and equipment to Taiwan last Wednesday. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the sanctions were necessary “in order to uphold national interests.” It’s not yet clear what form the sanctions will take. More sanctions could soon be on the way, as the State Department approved a further $2.37 billion in weapons sales to Taiwan on Monday.
Vietnam evacuating low-lying areas as strong typhoon nears (AP) Vietnam scrambled Tuesday to evacuate more than a million people in its central lowlands as a strong typhoon approached while some regions are still dealing with the aftermath of recent killer floods, state media said. Typhoon Molave is forecast to slam into Vietnam’s south central coast with sustained winds of up to 135 kilometers (84 miles) per hour on Wednesday morning, according to the official Vietnam News Agency. The typhoon left at least 3 people dead and 13 missing and displaced more than 120,000 villagers in the Philippines before blowing toward Vietnam. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc ordered provincial authorities late Monday to prepare to evacuate about 1.3 million people in regions lying on the typhoon’s path. Phuc expressed fears that Molave, the latest disturbance to threaten Vietnam this month, could be as deadly as Typhoon Damrey, which battered the country’s central region in 2017 and left more than a hundred people dead.
Vaccines, not spy planes: U.S. misfires in Southeast Asia For months, by Zoom calls and then by jet, Indonesian ministers and officials scoured the world for access to a vaccine for the coronavirus that Southeast Asia’s biggest country is struggling to control. This month, their campaign paid off. Three Chinese companies committed 250 million doses of vaccines to the archipelago of 270 million people. A letter of intent was signed with a UK-based company for another 100 million. Absent from these pledges: the United States. Not only was it not promising any vaccine, but months earlier the United States shocked Indonesian officials by asking to land and refuel its spy planes in the territory, four senior Indonesian officials told Reuters. This would reverse a decades-long policy of strategic neutrality in the country. Washington’s campaign to buttress its influence in the region—part of its escalating global rivalry with China—has been misfiring, say government officials and analysts.
Bomb at seminary in Pakistan kills 8 students, wounds 136 (AP) A powerful bomb blast ripped through an Islamic seminary on the outskirts of the northwest Pakistani city of Peshawar on Tuesday morning, killing at least eight students and wounding 136 others, police and a hospital spokesman said. The bombing happened as a prominent religious scholar during a special class was delivering a lecture about the teachings of Islam at the main hall of the Jamia Zubairia madrassa, said police officer Waqar Azim. The attack comes days after Pakistani intelligence alerted that militants could target public places and important buildings, including seminaries and mosques across Pakistan, including Peshawar.
Hopes for peace in Libya (Foreign Policy) The two main factions in Libya’s civil war agreed to a nationwide cease-fire at U.N.-backed talks in Geneva on Friday. Previous attempts to broker an end to the yearslong conflict have failed, but the new agreement has cautiously raised hopes that it will lay the groundwork for a peace deal. The cease-fire, signed by the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord and Gen. Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army, calls for all front-line forces to return to their bases and all mercenaries and foreign troops to withdraw within three months. The Libyan conflict has drawn in a multitude of international players, including Russia, Turkey, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates. Their actions in the coming months could make or break the cease-fire.

Re-Homed (A Chapter from one of my Wattpad Books)
"Hello?" someone answers. Dixie doesn't recognize the voice and the language sounds vaguely slavic in nature.
"Howdy. This is Dixie with the states. I was wantin' to talk to Soviet," Dixie introduces, wincing at the rushed introduction. He hears someone shout something in unintelegable to him, but the tone gave him the impression the speaker was calling for someone, hopefully, Soviet.
"She is the human age of 7-ish, right Yorky?" Dixie replies, and New York nods in conformation, "yeah, 7."
Dixie puts himself on mute and helps navigate and direct New Yorks directions from the maps.
Once they are stopped and the states step out to stretch their legs, Dixie walks the phone over to Hawaii, who has Alaska attached to her hip.
"Has New York told you about the plan?" Dixie asks.
"Yes. I don't like it, but it will keep Alaska more safe. Will I be able to talk with USSR?" Hawaii replies, sounding apprehensive.
"Yeah. I got him on the phone here," Dixie replies, unmuting the phone and handing the it to Hawaii. Hawaii introduces herself as Alaska's current guardian with America absent. After a few more minutes of talking, she hands the phone down to Alaska, who takes it with shyly.
"Hello?" she says into the phone. She is quiet for a moment until her eyes light up and she gasps dramatically.
"You're Mr. Soviet! You're Mr. Russia's papa, right?" she asks enthusiastically. Dixie assumes that Soviet says yes, because Alaska begins enthusiastically talking into the phone as if he was already family.
I think that's enough," Dixie says gently, taking the phone from the child hands and hoping that she hadn't scared away the late superpower on the other side.
"Are y'all still there?" Dixie asks into the phone, hesitent.
"I will house them for as long as you need," Soviet replies, "and I wish to see Alaska in the future after this is over."
Dixie feels a heavy weight being lifted from his back.
Was there anything else you needed?" Soviet replies.
"Nope, that's it. Thank you again for your help."
"It is not a problem. All I ask in return is that my son is able to come home. Goodbye, Dixie."
"Bye," Dixie says and he hangs up the phone, feeling more accomplished than he had in the past few days. He breaths a long sigh of relief.
"Hey Alaska?" Dixie calls.

Welcome back!
Well, the die has been cast, and Europe shall endure the consequences. Or will it?
Onward with the story :)
All Frozen and Tangled characters belong to Disney. All I own is this retelling and some original characters.
Chapter 10: Felino the crooked nose
February the 5th, 1828,
‘You’re a frigid, wormy piece of shit, you know that?’, growled the recently anointed Tsar at the Arendellian Monarch. Not a good sign for the conference the concert of Europe had arranged; the Monarch of Arendelle was hellbent on closing his country yet again, and no one was willing to budge on their stance.
‘I care not for the impression you choose to have about me, your majesty. I have my reasons and my fears to support my decision. I have to do what I feel is best for my kingdom, as would you if you faced a decision of a similar magnitude.’ Agnarr stated his position calmly, even as he felt no genuine respect for the Russian Monarch. Unlike his late brother, Tsar Nicholas the first had no great capacity for empathy and understanding. He had chosen to keep himself and his people ignorant. After all, what could one say of the sovereign who treated his highest officials and closest advisors like the serfs he saw them to be, and the holy synod under him bragged openly about how it was their god given duty to keep the downtrodden as they were. Oh, how their man, Sergei Uvarov, the Tsar’s minister of education, openly declared: “If I can extend Russia’s childhood another fifty years I will consider my mission accomplished.”
Oh, the Tsar saw himself as a god, and a jealous one at that. Agnarr understood that and knew that as a fellow sovereign, the Tsar could do little but rant in his face for the insult. Even if he would want to wage war upon Arendelle, he wouldn’t wish to give up access to the only warm water seaport he had. Still, Agnarr’s worries were far greater than some disgruntled people in power.
Elsa had lost control of her powers and was crippled in her fear, Anna had been forced to selective amnesia from Grand Pabbie, leaving no trace of Elsa’s powers and Olva...well she hadn’t been so fortunate. Against the advice of Grand Pabbie, he and Iduna had insisted on the procedure of wiping her memory clean of Elsa’s powers and the accident. The hermit warned of the consequences he was facing now with Olva, but how was he to know in his panic and desperation? Now the poor girl had begun experiencing fits and severe headaches, along with bouts of fainting for several minutes. He hadn’t slept this past month properly in the worry of what could happen to his family. Now he had a solution, and he would not back off from it. He must protect his family in any way possible. He must.
‘Your majesties, please don’t antagonise each other. This concerns all of us. You’re not the only ones troubled here. King Agnarr, you’d best explain yourself.’, queen Sophia spoke firmly as she presided over the conference. Agnarr’s declaration had shocked everyone, and he was yet to provide an explanation.
‘Thank you, queen Sophia. I have no intent on stepping on anyone’s face or insulting anyone. This sudden policy of isolation is a measure of precaution. I have it on reliable sources and personal knowledge that there are elements of revolution and insurgency brewing up in my kingdom. I can’t ignore it like the previous bourbon king of France in his time, god rest his soul. I must deal with these rebels quickly and with extreme prejudice. Because if I don’t then Arendelle falls forever, and if Arendelle falls, all northern Europe shall sink along with it.
And before you decide on persecuting war against me, ask yourselves this. Haven’t we had enough of war? We saw 2 decades of war followed by a decade of relative peace. If you ask me, I’d rather prefer the latter. I make this tough choice for the safety of all Europe, please understand.’
He paused to size up the room, who could be his allies and enemies hereafter. Corona and Austria-Hungary were definitely his allies; he knew Reginald would support him in the end. Weselton and the English would be against it; his partnership with them and America would be at risk, he’ll have to accommodate them somehow. Same was the situation with Russia. Maybe the Ottomans had to be brought in to keep Russia in check? Spain and the Southern Isles could be neutral; the Spanish could not care less, their main rivals were the English and the French, they would only vote as a formality. As for the Southern Isles were represented by queen Paulina, for the king had taken ill. On the surface, Paulina looked pleasant and charismatic, yet Agnarr knew that she would be a formidable and dangerous foe if he didn’t play this right. He began to speak again but was rudely interrupted.
‘And what would be these insurgent elements? The Northuldra?’, asked the duke of Weselton. The room tensed at the duke’s blatant attempt towards badgering the king of Arendelle. Agnarr had to fight a very strong impulse towards bashing the duke’s head on the wall. After composing himself mentally, he replied with barely concealed intentions ‘Why, yes. They have been neglected for far too long. I must attempt to bring them up with the kingdom. They are too obscure and are getting discontent.’
‘Just the language your father used, didn’t he? And where is he now? Lost like the rest of them. I’m telling you; this country is a lost cause. The Northuldra are ‘discontent’? Don’t make me laugh. They’re out for your and your family’s blood. They have been for years.’, the duke was clearly enjoying himself at Agnarr’s expense.
‘And if I hope to pursue a peaceful solution and keep Europe out of the mess, what is so wrong with that, duke?’, Agnarr nearly spat out the last part.
‘It’s always something personal. What, a problem with your kids now?’
‘Why, your uncouth son of a-‘
‘ENOUGH!’, the presiding queen roared. ‘That’s the second time you have tried to lay discord in the concert on purpose, duke. Once it was over my kidnapped child and now this. I swear, if it happens again, you’re going to meet your maker without warning, in front of everyone!’
‘I can’t believe you’re still going on about your bloody kid. She’s fucking dead! I always get enraged how the kings of Europe are disturbed about such trivial matters, and I’m to be punished because I call out the bullshit for what it is?! Fine. Hang, draw, and quarter me all you want, that does not change the fact that once again, some people are sullying the good name of the concert for their own interests.’, the duke spat venom without a care.
‘I’ve heard enough. Marshals, break the duke’s kneecaps.’, an enraged Sophia gave the cold order to her personal guard. The duke’s bravado melted away instantly, and he shrunk in his stature as the marshals came to deal with him.
‘Sophie, stop!’ King Reginald shouted.
‘Pray tell, what now, Reginald?’ his spouse was beyond annoyed by now.
The king of Corona whispered in his spouse’s ear ‘We’ll get the coward some other time. I need to talk sense into Agnarr somehow. I advise you to break for recess.’ A rare sight for the usually tempestuous king to calm down his calmer, more pragmatic wife.
Queen Sophia sighed heavily and announced a recess.
Once they were alone, Reginald confronted Agnarr ‘What’s gotten into you, Agnarr? You’re supposed to be the sensible one amongst us two.’
‘I’ll tell you what’s sensible. I should invade the fucking duchy of Weselton, lay it to fucking waste, burn it to the fucking ground, and salt the fucking remains barren forever!’ Agnarr snarled with uncharacteristic murder in his eyes.
‘Oh, calm down, crusader. I hate the duke much more than you do, believe me. Nevertheless, even I must agree with that poltroon over your course of action. It’s drastic and uncalled for. Tell me honestly what’s bothering you. We’ll make it right. Tell me.’
‘You don’t believe me? I told you every reason I have for doing this. My kingdom has only just recovered from the previous war. I can’t risk another. I certainly can’t afford it to become a pan-European conflict. At the end of the day, I just want my heir to inherit a stable state. An agitated group of people is not the hallmark of a stable state. Even if it takes me years, I must resolve this once and for all.’
Reginald spoke empathetically ‘Alright, but it still is a visceral reaction to the situation. I think foreign aid would only help more. Are you sure about it?’
Agnarr thought about telling the truth to his best friend, but ultimately decided otherwise; he couldn’t let the secret get out in any circumstance.
‘Yes I am. I also believe that those so-called insurgents are supplied by foreign powers themselves; they would like nothing more than to make my kingdom their colony. And that fucking Weselton shill... I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s behind the whole damn thing.’
‘That may be true, but without solid evidence, we can’t deal with him effectively. We must be sure.’ Reginald advised him.
‘Alright, but I can’t back down from my position. Yes, my kingdom will suffer in the short run, but I know we’ll be secure and united eventually.’
Ultimately, the concert decided that Arendelle would only keep one point of access open to the outside world; the main port. Only diplomats and special traders would be allowed. Every other traveller, from tourist to student would have to be barred from entering the country. It may cause uprising among the international students in his kingdom, but he’ll have to deal with them on his down. To preserve the security, the red tape for the traders and businessmen became very harsh. All, in service towards protecting my family; Agnarr thought.
A week later
A craven figure along with half a dozen guards floated in a rowboat towards one of the northern shores of Arendelle, beyond the mist. A hooded figure in silhouette waited for them on shore, heavily dressed to protect them self against the bitter February cold. Upon reaching the shore, the hooded bowed in respect and said ‘Welcome, honourable duke of Weselton. I hope your journey was pleasant enough.’
‘As pleasant a trip I could hope in stormy, waning winter, thank you for asking.’, the duke removed his cloak and coat to make his face more visible, and gestured his guards to disembark and stand around. The scrawny man took a moment to stretch himself, and at length, spoke ‘How many instances of forbidden people wandering into your grounds?’
‘Not as many as before, however a group of the Iceni tribe were intercepted in the valley of death during patrol two months ago and dealt with without exception. No survivors that we know of.’
‘Good, the illegals are dwindling, soon they would be no problem. However, as long as Arendelle stands, you’ll never be safe. We’ll have to confront them once and for all.’
‘Let’s continue our discussion on the way to camp, honourable duke.’
The Northuldrian camp was twenty-five kilometres inland from the seashore, but the spirits had grown very erratic in recent years, so the Northuldra had to find new routes to their homes every few weeks. The latest incident was particularly severe; a landslide had destroyed the usual detour they took, so they had to take the tributaries by another boat, a slower but safer way of travel.
‘Forgive me, honourable duke. I know travel by water does not agree with you.’
‘I’ll live. Tell me, how is everything holding up north of the mist?’
‘We’re eking out a living somehow. As you know, the rivers have been gradually changing course towards the south, our arable lands are going barren as a result. Adding to the problem, the rains are becoming scarcer with every passing year bit by bit. I regret to inform you that the poppy plantation is facing a loss, the raw material for the heroin would be short this time.’
‘It seems you’ve lost the plot, haven’t you? How will I get you your weapons if your end of the bargain is low? Weapons, armament, lumber and steam technology for ships don’t come cheap, you know?’ the duke said with the faux humility that masked grave threats underneath, and the hooded figure knew well what those threats were. Nevertheless, a low yield was not the biggest problem.
‘There’s more, honourable duke. Arendelle has tried to sue for peace and is willing to cooperate.’
‘Yes, I heard. We both know it’s nonsense.’
‘I’m not so sure. The terms they have offered seem rather reasonable.’
‘I’m sure they are. They may be too reasonable, I’m afraid. Implying something between the lines. The implication being disastrous for the Northuldra. If you ask me, I would never take any terms Europe offers at face value.’
‘I’m a fair sceptic of the south, just as you are. But since the rise of the mist, they have not engaged in any big skirmishes.’
The duke sighed and said ‘It pains me to say it, but you lack an ocean of imagination. There are uncountable ways to fight a war of attrition, and Arendelle has chosen the most insidious way.’
‘What do you mean, duke?’
‘I’d rather tell this to everyone at once, instead of making it a poor game of translation errors.’, with that, the duke fell silent, knowing full well that the hooded figure’s doubts had been flared up.
After a voyage of two hours, the party reached the camp. A huge crowd had gathered upon the riverbank where the canoe stopped. The hooded figure removed his hood and stood beside the Northuldra leader as her most trusted vassal. The Northuldra leader went by the name of Yelena, a woman moving towards middle age, standing barely above the duke in stature, but those aged eyes had seen many ups and downs. The leader slightly prostrated herself before the duke; the Northuldra way of showing respect towards authority.
‘Welcome, o duke! I hope your voyage was pleasant.’
‘As much as I could hope it to be. I must say, the Northuldra’s native lands grow more beautiful every time I venture up’ the duke said.
‘Your grace flatters us. I believe my trusted vassal has given you the lowdown for everything that has happened in the past three months. We’ll be happy to discuss a compromise for the goods you need.’
‘Thank you, your excellency. However, my worries include the survival of the Northuldra as well.’
‘What is that supposed to mean?’
‘You may have received terms from the king of Arendelle for a peaceful cessation in the past few days, haven’t you?’
‘Yes, they are more reasonable than I expected.’
‘I feared so, for if you paid attention, you’d realise that the terms are too positive. They’re willing to overlook the massacre of the group of Iceni that happened two months ago. Not to mention the fact that they may have stumbled about the truth about our trade operation as well.’
‘Speaking of the trade operation, what we may be short of in terms of goods, we’ll make up in plunder in the North Atlantic. I have sanctioned three fleets for the same purpose later this week.’
‘That is encouraging, but I must warn you, the plundering operation would become very difficult very soon. What with the king of Arendelle sealing the kingdom’s maritime and overland borders.’
‘Excuse me, come again?’
‘Oh, I’m sorry. I thought you knew.’
‘No, I didn’t. Please enlighten us, your grace.’
‘Well, your excellency, the king of Arendelle has decided to isolate the country, and I quote his speech: “This sudden policy of isolation is a measure of precaution. I have it on reliable sources and personal knowledge that there are elements of revolution and insurgency brewing up in my kingdom. I can’t ignore it like the previous bourbon king of France in his time, god rest his soul. I must deal with these rebels quickly and with extreme prejudice. Because if I don’t, then Arendelle falls forever, and if Arendelle falls, all northern Europe shall sink along with it.” Now you tell me, is this the language a man would use while suing for peace?’
Yelena became quiet for a moment, taking in al the information. At length, she asked ‘What are the possible ramifications of this declaration?’
‘They could be numerous, but I’ll tell you the most obvious one. Within a month at the latest, the coasts would be dotted by the Arendellian navy, putting a blockade through which nothing except their own ships could get in or out. You can imagine they would be only too happy to hunt down your pirate ships before you’re able to secure any loot at all. You can’t raid through the land, as the mist is your most powerful jailer. It will surely be a stifling experience; I won’t deny it.’
‘What if we do sue for peace? If we sincerely send an envoy to the south?’
‘Aye, you could try that. In fact, I suggest you try that without fail.’ Interrupted a tall, dark man as he made his way inside Yelena’s tent.’
‘Mathias, just because the mist forces me to tolerate and learn to like your presence doesn’t mean you interrupt me in meetings about the matters of state.’ Yelena bristled with annoyance.
‘Believe me, once the mist lifts up, I’ll ride south, first thing on my to-do list.’
‘Mathias, you look familiar. Tall, dark, muscular, good posture. Does your Ethiopian father still till the grain and tan the leather shoes?’, making harsh, cutting remarks was a talent the duke used well.
‘No. Does the honourable duke take me for his wretched bastard slaves in the Congo?’ Mathias growled.
‘Gentlemen, please. Your grace, please don’t mind Mathias. Yes, he’s a southerner. He was in king Runeard’s personal guard from what I gather. He may look brutish and imposing, but he’s harmless and dare I say, a halfway decent man. He doesn’t usually interrupt one of my meetings, so this instance must be special. Tell us big boy, what should bother us?’ Yelena finished as she turned to Mathias.
‘I’m sorry. I’m not willing to entertain the stories of a deserter.’, the duke said nonchalantly.
‘As if your pip squeakiness has ever been in a battle to judge a trapped prisoner of war?’ Mathias seethed.
‘See, even he agrees, we’re at war.’ Oh, they were all playing right into my hands, the duke thought with glee.
‘Yes, and now peace must be made. Yelena, this is not the time to go on the offensive. Trust me.’ Mathias faced Yelena as he settled down beside her.
‘Maybe, but it is a peace we would be forced into. We want it on our own terms, Mathias. I understand you’re homesick, but we haven’t had a home to go back to for decades. We will assert our terms onto the king, and he will have to accept it. If he doesn’t, it’s war.’
‘Lofty words, your excellency. Alas, there’s no substance or weight to back your words. You’ll be blockaded soon, and travel by land is impossible anyhow. I suggest you make a permanent settlement here and be done with it.’, the duke laid the bait.
‘And perpetually disturb the peace of the spirits by claiming their sacred forest? Never.’, and Yelena took it.
‘Well, I can’t negotiate such a big difference in your quantity of goods. You’ll have to offer me something if I must continue supporting your struggle. What about lumber from the forest?’
‘You must be reading a fucking comedy. When we refuse to make a permanent settlement in the forest, YOU PROCEED TO SUGGEST SOMETHING FAR WORSE?!’, Mathias had half a mind to strangle the duke right there, when he was stopped by Yelena.
‘Sit down, Mathias! We’re in desperate times. We’ll have to do what we must in order to survive.’
‘Making a bad situation worse is survival?! Can you imagine or fathom withstanding the rage of the spirits if we cut down the forest?! How can you even consider this, Yelena?’
‘If I may ease your concerns, I’ll vouch for the fact that a sacred relic commands a lot of value in the market. Especially amongst those who are powerful, proud, wealthy and don’t ask too many questions. Here’s what I’ll do. I’ll introduce a tiny amount in the market. People would recognize it as sacred or magical with plenty of history behind it. Once I do that, I can manipulate the price for it and bring you all the money, all the weapons, all the ships you need.’, the duke reassured the Northuldra leader.
Yelena spoke at length ‘Alright, I agree to the venture. Let’s begin with ten logs.’
Mathias hung his head in defeat and nursed his forehead, which had begun to throb. This is not going to end well.
Yelena tried to comfort him after the duke left ‘Listen, for every tree we cut down, we’ll plant ten, I promise.’
‘Even if you do that, it won’t be the sacred forest of the fifth spirit anymore.’ Mathias said ruefully.
As the duke made his way to the ship waiting off the coast on his rowboat, one of his taciturn guards asked him ‘Your grace, why do we need these bunch of sheep worshippers?’
The duke grinned darkly ‘When a rival nation is at war with itself, best let it consume itself.’
Around the same time, somewhere in northern Greece
‘Rider, move your ass and get over here!’ A portly man called out as he wiped a greasy hand on his apron.
‘Coming, Elios!’ Flynn came running in. He was now a man of seventeen; having seen a fair bit of the world by now and had been working with Elios for a few months. Elios had hidden Flynn to save him from ‘The Hawk’, a notorious smuggler who had trapped him in his ring. In return, Flynn agreed to work for him in his front business.
‘Why must I go through this fucking chore every time? To have to call you up like a fucking parade float to just do your blessed job?’
‘I’m sorry for being two minutes late. I already did the prep for tonight; the bar has been cleaned and stocked. I just took a nap, calm your tits.’
‘I’ve heard that many times, give me something new Flynn’ Elios rolled his eyes.
‘What do you think I’ve been doing? Making merry around the city square? Come on, I know better than that.’
‘Don’t bother lying to me. I swear, one of those women is gonna make you the sacrificial goat someday.’
‘Alright, I heard your speech. Got it, can we move on?’
Elios wiped some sweat off his forehead and asked, ‘You know who’s coming tonight?’
‘Yeah I do, friends loyal to the Greek cause.’ Flynn answered without faltering
‘Not just any friend, mind you. The Gent is coming along with the Sicilians.’
Flynn’s ears perked up at that piece of news. The Gent was a legend in Northern Greece, almost singlehandedly forming the on-land resistance against the Ottomans in the Greek war of independence. He had been involved in the resistance for nearly seven years now and was lobbying for foreign support.
‘Wow, that’s a hero if I ever saw one.’
‘I told you I’ll introduce you to him soon. Today’s the day.’
‘Now, why would he visit an affluent restaurant filled with Turks day in and out, I’m sure I don’t know.’ Flynn stated incuriously.
‘Hey Flynn, let his people worry about it. I’m sure his people would be clever enough to figure it out.’ Elios was a practical man who knew the streets well, however, forethought was not his strongest suit.
‘No, Elios. Hear me out. If the Gent is ambushed here, we’re done for. Everything will be up for grabs and I know neither of us would like the prick of the cold sabre chopping our necks. And if we know The Gent is coming, the officials certainly know. And if the Sicilians find out, you’ll end up wearing concrete shoes, old boy. You may know the gutters and the roads, but I know loyalty.’
‘What do you suppose we do now? We can’t really serve them in public view.’
‘That is true. Tell you what, let’s clear the cellar for their dinner. I’m sure they don’t want any outsider to hear what they are discussing amongst themselves. Also, I think you should serve them personally, Elios.’
‘No can do. I’m the front. If I don’t stay there, they’ll investigate. You’ll have to serve them yourself. I’m sorry Flynn. The Gent trusts me, if he sees that I consider you worthy, he’ll be comfortable.’
But I don’t know the first thing about him and the others. What if I offend them without meaning to?’
‘Don’t be stupid, Flynn. We both know you know better than that. If the service is good, they’ll fill your pockets with enough dosh to set you up for years. If I truly know you, you wouldn’t miss this opportunity for the world.’
‘Alright, I’ll do it. Say Elios, what if I warm them personally first about the last-minute change of scenery?’
‘No. I’ll have to warn them myself. Set the cellar up. I did contact them two days ago; I’ll do it again.’
‘Just make sure you’re not followed.’
‘Hey Rider, who knows the street better?’
‘You do, clearly.’
‘Yup. I’ll be back soon.’
A few hours later, a party of people showed up. There was the Gent, a tall slender man, worn down by the hiding and fighting. His face was warm enough, save for the green eyes that could bore holes through the Earth, and a crooked mouth that had a scare across the top lip. Still, he felt like a man who could fight forever. As for the Sicilians, they were something else entirely.
It was a band of seven people. The man most fancily dressed, along with the ruby ring on his little finger and the gold watch and chain, was obviously the leader. The six were presumably his bodyguards, each one burlier and more imposing that the last, looking like killers happy to kill a priest in the middle of a sermon. Ruthless and royal. Dressed to the nines up to their plug caps.
Flynn suddenly felt dwarfed and puny.
‘Gentlemen, this is Flynn, he’s been working with me for a few months, he’ll be serving you tonight.’ Elios gave a short introduction and left. Flynn gave a short bow, not sure how to address these powerful men.
‘What’s your name, green boy?’ The Gent asked.
‘Flynn.’
‘How old are you?’
‘Going to be seventeen next month.’
You’re not from around these parts, are you? Your accent tells me....Austria Hungary?’
‘No sir, Corona. The Rhinelands, to be exact.’
‘Uh huh. How’d you end up in Greece?’
‘War orphan from the Napoleonic wars, pushed around all of Europe, ended up here.’ By now, Flynn knew the story by heart.
‘My condolences. Ok Flynn, you’re going to undergo something unpleasant. Forgive me, just the nature of these times. I need to be sure of your loyalty.’
Before Flynn could reply, one of the goons was upon him, almost choking him with his weight, pressing down on his spine. Even if Flynn had any wind left him, he couldn’t yell.
‘Answer me, why was the room changed at such short notice?’
‘When the Gent asks, you better fucking answer, figlio di sfagato!’
‘Get off him, let him speak.’ The goon got off at once.
Flynn coughed and gasped for air. When he could breathe normally, he said weakly , ‘Mr. Gent, it was Mr. Elios who suggested it.’ Flynn barely finished his sentence before receiving a punch in the gut, knocking the air out of him.
‘That’s a lie. Elios is not that big a thinker. You seem to be smarter than you let on. Why’d you try to protect us from the Turks?’
‘I didn’t want them to kill you here. That would be underhanded and filthy. I’ve heard....heard that you believe in engaging them head on, I didn’t want them to ambush you. You’re a hero around here, would be a shame if I couldn’t do my bit for your cause.’ Flynn was hit yet again by the goon, this time in his nose. Blood had begin ebbing from his mouth and nose.
‘You’ve said enough. I can guess the rest of the story. Either betray the Turks and face the sabre or betray us and face getting shot in the face. Why choose us over them?’
‘I gambled here.....I’d rather be loyal to someone fighting the slavers for freedom than the slaver themselves.’ Flynn braced himself for another hit, but the hit never came.
Instead he could hear a chuckle from the Sicilian leader, who had gestured his goon to stand down. He approached Flynn and held him by the cheek, saying in thick accent, ’Felino. That’s your name from now on. Felino the crooked nose. Drinks on the house, all night. Keep the drinks up, you’ll be richer than the sultan come morning. Good boy.’
The leader, or don as they were calling him now, lightly tapped his cheek and went back to his place, settling down with the Gent and the other goons. Flynn left the room and almost crumpled on the floor. I could’ve died there, he thought for a second. Nevertheless, he composed himself and put on his charm; Felino the crooked nose had a job to do.
Ha, the duke of Weselton’s such a bastard, always stirring up shit wherever he goes lol. I love the potential his character has.
Our Man Flynn is serving the big boys now! What could happen?
Thanks again to those who continue reading this silly story :P
As always, constructive feedback is always welcome!

03. ESTONIA
Elina Nechayeva - “La Forza” 8th place
youtube
You thought this ranking was dead, didn’t you?
As fate would have it, I’ve finally found time to publish new content for you to enjoy, riding the wave of a unexpectedly great edition of JESC, in which Australia’s generic jury evil was once again vanquished by a plucky east-bloc diva. It is ~LA FORZA DEL DESTINO~, y’all.
But before I elaborate on the JESC thoughts that I O U, I will first finish my ranking of ESC Proper.
Let’s be honest, chickens, I was never *not* gonna like a regal Rustonian swan especially one who saunters around in oversized projector dresses and displays the exact same behaviour and personality as Cosi Fan Tutte’s Dorabella 24/sevs (seriously. Elina is *possibly* the only Estonian to have an openly ditzy personality <3), like HELLLOW! How can I not love her? Look at the state of her:
Gorgeous! She should HAVE WON but alas she was rigged out by a bitter jury and awful taste, what else is new? Now, I’ve heard people (jealous eleni stans) tell that “La Forza” is overrated because it’s “not that special, especially for it’s genre” which... I don’t quite understand? (Especially coming from Eleni fans. ELENI!!) Sorry to tell ya boos, even after all these months, I still think “LaForza” slaps the crap out of the “Fuego’s” and “Toy’s” of this world and here’s why.
For starters “La Forza” is only the second *actual* Opera entry in Eurovision canon, after “Sognu”. Note that I am *not* counting all the schlager/opera dalliances the likes of “My Friend”; “La Voix” and “Cvet z Juga” which are just typical Eurodance songs disguised *as* Opera songs.I don’t dislike them (quite the opposite), but they’re *not* of the Opera genre, while “La Forza” indisputably is.
More importantly however is that “LaForza” manages to both
*Excite visually*
I’m happy those crowdfunding campaigns payed off for Estonia, if only for the opportunity to turn Elina into a cobweb, an amoeba that farts rose petals and a jacuzzi respectively. Not to mention that Elina herself is gorgeous.
*Soothe musically*
Elina’s siren voice is the perfect balm after a full three hours of chicken noises, fuckboi metaphors and air piano’s. #TheVoice is usually something I don’t care about *too much*, but in Elina’s case it manages to calm me down every time I decide to give her song a whirl and that keeps it fresh and fun for me, even after all these months.
Incidentally, spectacle and belcanto the two reasons to watch opera performances in the first place. I mean, what is opera but a musical in which portly people in lederhosen and capes stab one another with prop swords and mime dying by shrieking at (and over) each other in high-pitched mangled Italian for 15 minutes? La Forza delivered both with flying colours. It’s PERFECT.
Yet perhaps... a bit too perfect?
You know, I hate to admit it, but I initially had Elina *even* higher than third. In fact, when I first compiled this list, she was my #1. Yet, as time went on, I felt like something didn’t fit. I love Elina and I love Estonia in Eurovision (and life.) and I felt they had *EARNED* their first ever #1 spot on a BorisBubbles ESC ranking, after finishing in my top five a bajillion amount of times. Yet... I couldn’t commit. You see, imperfect entries and underdogs have always been my jam *way more* than bouts of seemingly flawless beauty and one must stay true to their character! Now let’s celebrate Estonia Being Great Again and look forward to the impending Tanja/Birgit Co-Op that will take us BY (shit)STORM!! IT’S DESTINY Y’AAAAAA Y’AAAAA Y’AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL *whirls out*

I’ve Had a Broken Heart:
How the revival of Frances Farmer’s story served as a personal revival
During the darkest moments of my life, I discovered the story of Frances Farmer, an actress who was stripped of everything she had known due to her own personal demons. Her complicated narrative is marked by the details of arrests and imprisonment in institutions, but her legacy is much more than that. Almost 90 years have passed since she first made headlines with the controversial essay, “God Dies,” but now I hope to see to it that she is finally making the headline that she never made during her lifetime: one of hope.
The life of Frances Farmer is well-established in the headlines as one of Hollywood’s greatest tragedies. Perhaps that is due in part to the strong desire we have to bury our own problems in the deepest corners of our minds and focus on the pain of others, as told through the tabloids. The real tragedy is that she never had the opportunity to tell her story, but rather she was forced to defend it and portray herself as the media saw fit. Regardless, it was the revival of this character in film and song that I credit my own revival.
I was a sophomore in college the first time I heard the name, Frances Farmer. My public speaking class had been assigned to research and present on the informative topic of our choosing, and I opted to read my speech titled: “Mental Health in American Society.” I spent weeks researching the long-standing crisis, dedicating much of my time to learning about the cruel and inhumane treatments of patients during the early to mid-1900s. It was while working on this project that I became fascinated by her story and though a college assignment had provided her entrance into my life, it was a nervous breakdown during my twenties that truly introduced the two of us.
Known for my adoration of all things Jessica Lange, I discovered one of her greatest films, Frances, during an evening of wine and sadness. While the picture took a creative and exaggerated approach, Lange’s portrayal of Frances ultimately stripped the character down and made her appear as something the media rarely allowed her to be, and that was human. Looking past the outbursts, the anger, and the arrests, I saw a rebellious woman whose only true crime was her extraordinary and tireless search for peace. As I read her book later on, I only felt deeper toward that same belief.
Born in 1913, the Seattle native never had a chance to simply be. With dreams of becoming a writer, the 17 year published an essay titled “God Dies,” that ultimately won first prize in a contest sponsored by The Scholastic, a magazine for high school students. Rather than showing support for the young writer who had just won a national contest, the town responded by calling out the nature of her composition, strictly acting on illiberal fear. She described this as a defining moment in her life where for the first time she “found out how stupid people could be.” The essay detailed how she felt toward God, trying to justify him as a father figure of sorts and raised the question how, if he were just, then why would he help her find a favorite hat she had lost yet allow one of her classmates to lose both parents. How was this fair? She never outright denied God, but rather wanted answers to validate her experiences.
Years later while attending college, Frances won another contest that required selling subscriptions to a leftist newspaper. The town was yet again roused by her decision to accept the prize of a trip to communist Russia, yet her true purpose for traveling was to see the Moscow Art Theater and return to New York. Here she would rent a room with money from her refunded bus ticket to Seattle and immerse herself in the world of theater, which she considered to be true artistry. She soon attracted the attention of a Paramount talent scout, and within the next year she had been cast in two major films: Rhythm on the Range and Come and Get It. It was 1936 and Frances had just turned 23 years old.
Although success was instant, she treated staring in pictures as just another step toward her true desire to perform in the theater. Fighting for a dream is enough to shake anyone, but Frances was also fighting the studio and her mother - physically, mentally, and emotionally. She resented the life that the studio attempted to create for her; the glamorous lifestyle, the parties and premieres, and the constant casting of her in lackluster roles in B movies. Meanwhile in Seattle, her mother was ever-present in keeping up appearances and letting the town know that her daughter was now an alluring movie star.
In 1942, the life Frances was contracted to live collided with the one that she had been living. Alcohol was becoming a friend of the actress, and provided her the comfort of feeling numb. The decade was spent in and out of mental asylums where she was subjected to the many inhumane, torturous treatments used during that era of mental health rehabilitation, something I had learned in my college research years prior. She eventually regained legal control of her life and moved to Indiana where she wrote poetry and hosted her own television show. She passed away in 1970 at the age of 56.
While most desire to know the worst of her story, I feel that the 1940s did not define Frances as much as it defined the cruelty of those around her. As I familiarized myself with her narrative, I realized that did not see Frances as a patient, but as a broken human. She was strong-willed, outspoken, and a fighter during a time where women were expected to sit down and be quiet. Intuitive and fearless, she was stripped of everything she had known and made to believe she was insane, yet I think the true insanity lies within the minds of those who tried to tame her honest rebellion.
I found comfort in the spirit of Frances during the worst time in my life, when I began hiding myself away in the comfort of the four walls that surrounded me. At 18, I was awarded a scholarship to attend school for music; uninterested in academics, I used the opportunity to move to the city I had long desired to reside in. Six years later, I had moved away to find some peace, and to simply be alone. I was living in a top floor apartment overlooking the beautiful Old Hickory lake, yet I kept the blinds closed. The darkness was comforting, as was my new dependence on the bottle. Alcohol had only been an acquaintance up until this point, but had become a dear companion in recent months. During the first 24 years of my life, I had gone through severe bouts of depression, but I knew this time that it was more severe. It felt as if I were standing along the edge of a blade, ready to slip and fall at any moment, to break and to bleed from the lack of balance. And it was balance that I lacked as I overlooked the depth that served as my descent into madness.
I can pinpoint the moment that I felt my world begin to shake: Father’s Day 2017. Throughout my childhood, I regarded the day as a passing thought as I never really found a close bond with my father other than a 60 second phone call every three years. I had not seen him in over two years, but a strong urge took me to visit on this day. He died that night, and he took with him my hope to reconnect with him as well as my three younger sisters. Upon returning to Nashville after the service, I began drinking and it seemed as if I were losing every part of who I had been. What remained was being torn away, piece by piece. I had been refused a job due to my looks, being deemed “unfuckable” by the CEO. My next opportunity was short lived, as the company soon folded and provided a ten minute notice. I returned to retail to make ends meet for the time being. I became infatuated with a man who promised me the world, but instead stole the innocence I held close. After that night, the notion that I had control of anything had diminished to nothing. My depression and anxiety were now running my life, instead of moving within it. I lost my retail job because of my inability to turn it off, and I repeated the process with my next position. The bottle of vodka on the shelf followed me to work, and I began drinking on the job. I could no longer force a smile, and I found myself picking fights with my co-workers and customers just to feel something. I wanted to be angry or sad; I would settle to be anything but numb. It was after the new year that my boss let me go - and I let go of myself.
The loss of my job had been my breaking point. I had nothing left except for my sanity, which was escaping my grasp. Slowly, then quickly. I had pushed away everyone I had ever known, which left me completely alone with the exception of the liquor - I received my first DUI that same week. The culmination of everything was too much to live within the walls of my mind, much less share with my mother, who only offered me the chance to come home. She always heard my words, yet never truly listened to anything that I said. How could I return to the place that tossed me out, that was my first understanding at how cold the world could be? It was in my weakness that I finally relented and spent days on her sofa, realizing that the home I had come home to was no longer my home. I had nowhere to go and nothing left to lose; I broke.
It was during this time that I first saw Frances and I, for lack of better words, fell in love with her. Every emotion I felt in the deepest part of my soul, I watched as she was portrayed by Jessica Lange in the same essence. She was this deeply driven, independent, one way kind of woman who never chose to pick her battles. She fought for what she thought was best, even if it came down to tearing her apart. She knew what she wanted, and she knew that trying to live those dreams would eventually destroy her in the end. Frances had a lot of demons, something I was learning about for myself. I knew what it felt like to be taunted by your entire town, and what it felt like to chase after a dream in the big city. I knew what it meant to live with a rebellious spirit and still be told how to live. I knew what it meant to have those demons control the deepest part of your soul. And to be someone I had never known, much less lived within the same time as, I felt this parallel between our lives.
Truthfully, we are all just actors in this masquerade; I played the part just as she had. I fought for so long to be more than I was, and when I dropped my mask for the whole world to see, no one was more surprised than me. I believe the world tends to find those who have no boundaries and rein them in, to break them. It is a dangerous place for a woman with determination and a dream; times have not changed from her time to mine. We are all vulnerable, and they often wait until the first thread breaks before they assist in our unraveling. This is how I see the life of Frances Farmer; this is also how I see my own. However, I was given something that she was never granted: a chance.
For the rest of her life, Frances was forced to relive the worst moments of her life for the world to see, most infamously on This is Your Life. An opportunity to defend herself turned into a reminiscing of her greatest tragedies. I truly don’t believe that she ever found peace befitting her efforts to regain control, and sadly that’s where her story ends. But not mine…not yet. Looking back at my own collapse, I realize some will say that I suffered a nervous breakdown, and I would not be apt to disagree. Others would say nothing more than how I must have had a real bad day - I guess they’re right, too. How do you take such a time and give it a single answer that makes sense? The truth is somewhere within it all. The only thing I do know for a fact is that, regardless of our stories, each life matters in the end. As Frances famously asked, and it is with sincerity that I can answer, “yes, I have had a broken heart.”

What are the T&C to Invest in during a Bear Market/Market Crash?
Investing in stocks and bonds during a long bull market is simple enough. It is a little more challenging when everything is going downhill and inflation is at a record high.
In the 25 years since foreign investors began actively investing in the Indian market, Indian stocks have gone through four bearish trends.
The first of these four bear markets was the Russian debt collapse in 1998. During that time, Sensex fell by approximately 30% in value. The second bear market was when the tech bubble burst in 2000-01, and Sensex fell by approximately 43%. The third event was the global financial crisis of 2008-09, during which the stock market was one of the poorest performers in the world. During this phase, Sensex fell by around 52%. Lastly, we had the Covid-led pandemic-related sell-off just last year, which was the latest bearish trend in the Indian stock market.
However, investing activities in the stock markets across the globe continued. For this, the investors restructured their investing strategies and kept certain terms and conditions that come along with the bearish trend. To understand this in greater detail, let us first look at what a bear market is and how it is created.
What is a bear market?
When a stock market index falls by 20% or more from its recent high, then the market is considered to have entered a bearish phase. You can also consider the onset of a bear market when any single stock plummets 20% or more from its recent highs.
A bear market is characterised by falling returns, a negative market mood, and increased stock sell-offs. It can be triggered by a variety of factors, such as a poor or faltering economy, wars, bursting market bubbles, geopolitical crises, and significant economic shifts.
It has been observed that the quicker an index enters a bear market, the shallower the bear market tends to be.
An important thing to consider is that a bearish phase must not be confused with a period of market correction. For instance, in the present day scenario, with many factors plaguing stocks worldwide, such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict and rising inflation, major global indices such as the Nasdaq have seen a bearish trend. But the Indian exchanges have not seen this extremity yet, and Nifty is facing only market correction as of now. Read more bout bear market and market crash

An Unlikely Lover
Chapter 8
REMEMBER THIS IS A FANFIC. I can do whatever the fuck I want in it, I can add whatever or take out whatever. If you wanna leave a suggestion message me. In no way whatsoever, am I saying that Luka Modrić would let a random woman dance on him when he has a wife (or girlfriend). This is just a story. None of is for real, although I wish it was😭. I also don’t know if Ivan Rakitić has a cousin named Francesca lmao, this is just a story... so chill. Just wanted to clarify that.
A week and a half passed, the teams had already started with the practice games. They were pretty frustrated because te World Cup started on June 14, and they didn’t feel ready.
A friendly game against Brazil is done, and Luka frustradedly kicks the grass. They lost 2-0. In my opinion though, Croatia played better. Brazil are some fakers. They like to fall down for anything, they learned that from Neymar.
I finished my post about this practice game and shut my laptop closed. Luka shakes everyone’s hands, and the refs too. He then starts to walk off the field and into the dressing rooms he goes.
Some brunette runs towards Ivan R on the field and he hugs her. By the way, Rachel is sitting next to me.
“Who the hell is that?” Rachel asks, and I hear some anger in her voice.
“I don’t know.” I reply.
She’s mad cause she has a crush on Ivan, and he’s married. But that’s not his wife. His wife isn’t here, she’s somewhere else. And this girl looks pretty close to him. She’s young too.
Wait, what the hell? They look a little alike. Maybe I’m going blind, I doubt they’re related.
Ivan and this girl, with similar blue eyes as him walk over to where we are, the front row; working with the FIFA crew.
“This is Francesa. She lives here in Russia, and she’ll be showing us around.”
“Hi! Nice to meet you two, you girls are so pretty.” Francesa says.
“Oh, hi! Nice to meet you, I’m Jimenna. This is Rachel, my best friend.”
“Hi.” Rachel says with a smile, and shakes her hand. It’s fake though.
We all go to the dressing rooms, where the players are. Luka is probably showering, so I wait for him to finish.
Rachel and Francesa are making small talk. Rachel is super lovable so she’ll for sure be her friend in no time. But she’s still jealous.
Luka is ready, and Francesa told us that she’s show us around. And take us to her favorite club. Which is my favorite.
“Hey, babe, come here.” I say, as he walks towards me.
He doesn’t even reply and he throws his arms around me.
“I’m so stressed. We’re not ready.” He’s about to cry.
“You will be. You still have time. You guys will conquer every team coming your way. I promise.”
My fingers run through his hair, and he’s holding me by the waist tightly.
“Look at me.” I say again, and he looks at me; his eyes watering. “I think you’re amazing, Luka. No matter what.”
He nods and I get on my tippy goes to give him a kiss on the forehead.
“Thank you, ženica.”
~
It’s been a couple hours, and Francesa has shown us amazing places in Moscow like Gorky Park, Red Square, Moscow Kremlin, GUM, and Sparrow Hills. Now we’re all heading to her favorite club. It’s called GIPSY.
Luka hasn’t said much at all today since the friendly match with Brazil.
Mateo, Ivan R, Šime, and Dejan are with us along with Luka obviously. Francesca looks really close to Ivan, and it’s bothering Rachel.
“She has to be his side chick, do you see how close they are?” Rachel comments to me.
“I don’t know.” I reply.
“I’m gonna find out.” She says, before walking away from me to talk to Mateo.
I roll my eyes, and we walk out of GUM. It’s a mall with a ton of designer stores. There’s a limo bus waiting for us and we get in. Šime sits next to me.
“Hey.” He says.
“Hi.” I reply.
“I got you this.” He says, and hands me a bag.
It’s designer clothes.
“Thanks! I’m sorry I’ve been so distant. FIFA is really hard on Rachel and I.” I give him a hug.
“Yeah, I understand. We’ve all been so busy.”
Once we get to the club, Francesa gets us a table and I go to the bar to get drinks for all of us. I sit next to Luka, who is already drinking a bottle beer.
“Babe, are you okay?” I ask.
“Never better.” There is a hint of sarcasm in his voice.
“I’m just trying to help, Luka. I understand that you’re frustrated. Trust me, I am too-“
The Croat interrupts me while speaking.
“Frustrated with what? All you have to do is write. I have to train, play, lead this time, and above all; win. You do nothing.”
I raise an eyebrow, and reply with just as much rudeness.
“I’m frustrated with making you guys look like you deserve to win this World Cup.”
I get up and sit on the other side of our sitting area to sit next to Šime. I take the beer glass from his hands and take a big sip.
“Thanks?” He asks, with a laugh.
“You’re welcome.”
I honestly felt like crying.
What the hell is wrong with Luka?
“You okay?” He asks again.
“No, but soon I will be.”
We just talk and drink. Just having a good time.
“Are you sure you can braid?” I ask, with a laugh.
“Yes! I can.”
Šime starts braiding my long, black hair. He makes my hair into sections then does a Dutch braid.
“How do you know how to do this?”
“I have no idea.” He says.
Once he finishes, I get up to freshen up in the bathroom. Rachel and Francesa follow.
“Hey, hope you don’t mind if I ask you this. But are you and Ivan a thing? You know he’s married right.” Rachel tells Francesa.
“What? We’re related! He’s my cousin. Our dads are brothers.”
“Oh. That makes sense.” I say, opening the door to the bathroom. “You guys look alike.”
I wash my face, since I’m starting to look like trash. I’m the first to leave the bathroom, and the first thing I see is some random girl sitting on Luka’s lap. She’s touching him everywhere, in places only I’m supposed to touch. And he’s not even doing anything about it. He is letting her touch him.
Just as she is about to kiss him, I grab her by the shirt and slap her in the face.
“What the hell?!” She comments.
“That is my boyfriend you’re straddling.” I say, and push her away.
Luka is just smiling and laughing, as if nothing happened.
“Well, he never mentioned anything.” She says, and pushes me back.
“Oh no you didn’t. Come here bitch, I’m going to rearrange your fucking face!”
I grab the jug of beer and pour it over her head. The dumb blonde has the audacity to punch me in the jaw. She doesn’t hit as hard as I do though. She also bouts alcohol on my head. So my hair is soaking wet and most of my clothes as well.
This girl does not know who she’s messing with. I grew up getting into fights, since my childhood wasn’t perfect.
My hand holds my jaw, and I grab her by the hairs and throw her on the floor. While she’s on the floor, she grabs my leg and I fall down.
How come no one is stopping us? Like staff or any of my friends? It doesn’t matter, I’m going to leave her with marks.
I get on top of her and start punching her. Now is when people start telling us to stop. But this girl is tough, not going to lie. She’s punching, kicking and pulling my hair. Everything she can to get me off her.
Dejan walks over, and picks me up.
“What the hell, Dejan! Let me go!” I say.
Everyone is walking out of the club, because we made a mess. I dig in my pocket, while still being in Dejan’s arms and give it to a staff member.
“For the drinks and damage.” I say, with a wink.
Once we’re outside of the club, Rachel is making out with Mateo.
“What the hell?” I say.
What is even going on?
Dejan, the giant, sets me down and I sigh.
Luka is talking to Šime while Francesa talked to her cousin, Ivan.
I interrupt and make Luka face me.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?”
“Nothing.”
“So you were going to cheat on me?”
“Sure.”
“Okay, well, we’re fucking done you piece of shit.” I reply.
“It’s not like you’ve always been faithful. You were with Šime.” He slurred.
“Yeah, he was doing my hair. He’s my best friend. You were getting straddled.”
I don’t even let him finish, and I grab my own Uber to be away from everyone.
