Any tips for an aspiring social worker
+Be aware of any of your own trauma. Dont be one of the people who think they can do therapy AND get a degree at the same time. You will burn out, there are hundreds every year. Please dont be the person in lectures who takes yup 45 minutes crying over past trauma every session; you need to seek counselling for that from a professional who can help, not from your newbie classmates.
You may think its an exaggeration, but No. Unfortunately, no.
This ties in to your own biases, what you are likely to take to heart if the person fails, etc. You need to work with your supervisor around clients that may trigger something for you; or reconsider the role you are aiming for, etc.
+Have personal skills, you will be making and repairing relationships often. You can’t be someone who is super introverted and unable to start relationships with the clients; because often you are going to be the one doing the Hard Talks about difficult subjects. It doesnt mean you have to be a drill sargeant, but it means you need to have the confidence to talk with anyone.
If you’re a bit shy, work on talking to people and even looking into little courses. You’re not needing qualifications in public speaking, but you do need to have yourself in a position wherein you can talk to someone, even a whole family, or even lawyers, and police. Via phone, video, face-to-face, etc.
+Have work clothes and home clothes. Also court clothes, if you work in areas that need it.
Wear smart casual, you need to look presentable but not be like, dripping with diamonds and playing ‘rich person ministers to the Poors’. It happens, they get told off.
DO NOT WEAR SKIN TIGHT CLOTHES. Or ripped skinny jeans, or have your cleavage/buttcrack hanging out. Please. Strapless backs and short shorts also no.
Students sometimes turn up in this and it is dangerous. Especially the ladies. Sometimes you work with people who are very dangerous, who will interpret clothing for consent, and/or have incredibly low respect for women. When something happens, they will point to the workplace dresscode and absolve themselves of the situation.
Do not wear dangly earrings, scarves or thick necklaces/anything you do not want taken. And if in a hospital role, there are additional rules about what can and cannot be worn (bare below the elbow rule).
Also, enclosed shoes. IF you are in a service that assists families with dysregulated lives, or in the hospitals, etc, you will have strict policies about footwear for your safety.
+Get the flu shot. Trust me. Do it. You talk to so many people, by the time one catches a cold and you start showing symptoms, you’ve seen like twenty people and they all have families.
+Be used to working to tight deadlines. They are always there, esp in hospital social work where you legit have to account for every minute of the day and patient seen on this awful little system.
We are understaffed in most areas, and you will need to work hard.
BUT, self-care is imperative. Even if it is only making sure you leave before 9pm each night lmao.
+Be able to let insults go. You are going to be dealing with people often in the worst part of their life, be it mental health, in the justice system, having their kids removed, being disabled and persistently denied assistance, having significant alcohol/drug concerns, people who have experience extreme sexual harms or domestic violence, people who are being stalked, people in crisis etc.
At some point someone will call you some horrific things, or threaten you, or make nasty comments about you, etc. They may try to make constant complaints, etc. And as frustrating as that is, you have to understand their frustration and anger and fear.
You do not have to sit there and listen to them swear at you, that’s not what this means. It means that when someone is heightened and calling you a cunt, or something more inventive, you don’t give them the reaction they want; you can acknolwedge that they are upset/etc, or give them space by ending the call/leaving the room.
Think about when something happened for you and it was the Worst and you swore or threatened, etc. When you are calm, it seemed ridiculous, didn’t it? But that was you processing big, complicated feelings in the only way that felt right at the time. Same for them.
+You need to be aware that some clients have done or experienced terrible things, but you need to be open to the individual within the trauma. For example, someone may not be showing their emotional distress or pain or grief etc in the way you think they should, so you might discount it. When, someone who has gotten to know the client is aware that they tend to do ____ behaviour when they are having flashbacks, which is not a behaviour normally associated with the trauma.
Also, biases again. Just because someone is on drugs and denying to you that they have a problem, does not mean some part of them isn’t aware they do have one. Relapses are common. Soemtimes it is about discussing what was happening for them this week that made them use again, what they could try next time, if they are using their support networks. And never putting them in the Hopeless box.
If you are really struggling with a client, lean on your team, talk to your supervisor and see what else can be done or if there is another social worker with more experience who can be involved even for a short-term intervention.
+Don’t throw jargon and insider terms around when talking to clients, it’s rude. Explain things, use pauses so they can think.
+Look into the primary populations of your area/the area you intend to work in. Are there a high level of Indigenous persons? Refugees? People whose first language isn’t english and may need extra help with engagment?
What are your immediate thoughts (learned stigmata/stereotypes) about these peoples? How can you learn more?
In Aus, we work closely with Indigenous communities and agencies around social work matters. Making sure everyone is supported, heard, and can understand the concerns being raised/what is needed to help the client move forwards. There are many people out there who see this as ‘coddling’ or ‘unfair to non-Indigenous people’; but it is simply making certain that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are on the same footing as any non-Indigenous client.
And that cultural options are put on the table, such as having a family member step up to take in a child whilst the parent is not well; or trying a community-focused approach to helping with a drug concern, and using the right agencies so that they have appropriate supports.
Would it be fair to have a non-english speaking client in a courtroom without an interpreter? Why? Would you claim that they should know english and the entire legal system bc they were in your country? Of course not, that’s absurd. But some people think that way.
Would it be fair to ask someone in a wheelchair to file a form on the top floor of a building with no elevators, by 5pm, or lose their home? Why? Would you think they are complaining or ‘lying’ if they were able to mobilise a few steps without the chair, on a good day? That they were being ‘lazy’ and ‘deserved’ to lose their housing? Of course not, that’s absurd. But some people think that way.
When the military put men into service in the wars, they made anyone who could pass an english test an officer and the rest priovates who would die first in battle. Was this fair? Why not? Because it ensured the rich white dudes with private tutors got the best spots (totally unqualified) while the poor, poc and refugees were used as cannon fodder. Many could have been good officers if the test was about competence, but it wasn’t. Some people feel this was fair.
There are still people who think they ‘did the right thing’ whilst participating in the Stolen Generations; but then, they also thought taking babies from single mothers was appropriate too. That women couldn’t vote or be trusted with money, that is was ‘kinder’ to take a stillborn away and dispose of it without the mother ever seeing... rather than let her hold them, and say goodbye the way she needed to. Not to mention the english children shipped over to Aus to be used as little slaves and cruelly abused by Priests and Nuns and ‘upright christian citizens’. Not to mention lobotomies for when people were too emotional/refusing to play the game. Forcing hormone treatments on men and women to stop their homosexuality or sexually abusing them to ‘fix them’. Not to mention all the Twilight births nonsense where they tried to remove the pregnant person from the equation entirely, and it kept causing post partum depression. Not to mention... Not to Mention... NOT TO MENTION...
We have a lot of broken little old men and women and nonbinary (who do or don’t realise it) now, because of these “helpful interventions”.
You need to be aware of the harm that has been done, and aware of your own practice, so this damage can’t happen again and again.
Understand that your perspective and the worries/concerns you hold are often different to those of the client, because you are individuals who grew up in very different ways.
And remember, being a rich white person in a high paying job with good social standing doesn’t mean you can’t be charged for drug possession or have child safety knock on your door about the bruises you leave. Never think people are Above being awful, and never Assume people are because they are poor, a different colour, have not had your advantages, or have a disability/poor mh or addiction.
Clients are people, like you. Never think that you are above needing help too, one day. We all do, humans are built to rely on the group, on the social bonds we make from the minute we are born.
+Do you overreact to things? Sometimes a client will tell you about something that happened years ago, but they may phrase it like it happened yesterday (because of how it has returned to their mind, etc), and if you were to overreact to that immediately it can break the relationship/cause harm. You could say, “I can hear that this is very distressing for you, thank you for telling me about this difficult event in your life. Would it be alright if I asked you a follow-up question about when this occurred?” Sometimes a client will disclose things to you, and the goal is to remain in the conversation. They do a lot of this preparation at university, but you also need to have a personal ability to not panic off the bat.
+Ask yourself, is there anyone I would refuse to work with... and then examine Why. How would you react if a person like that came onto your caseload?
+Do not become overly emotionally invested in a client. It will be said in training over and over again, but you need to have clear boundaries; and being too invested in their success can hinder your ability to provide appropriate assessments for the client. Meaning they are not getting the care they need; which can sometimes be a harsh conversation about how you can see they are trying, but have backslid recently, so what is happening?
+Look at any internal biases and prejudices you may have. Did you have extreme mental health concerns that may make you feel more sympathetic to a parent or client, and this could blind you to the other concerns present? Didyou grow up rich and now have unrealistic expectations of what is necessary to be a good person? Do you think that all ‘those people’ should ______ ? Why? Question yourself. If you find yourself stereotyping or pigeonholing someone as ‘just another ____ trying to _____’ stop. Think about it. Where did you get that idea?
+Be aware of professional boundaries, do not be friends with the clients, but don’t be cold. Always let your bosses know about potential conflicts of interest to protect you.
Like, don’t loan the client $5, don’t hang out at the cinema because they’re ‘a great person’, etc.
And be aware that you have more power in this dynamic, so you have to be careful not to abuse it.
+You need to be good at record keeping, and honest. Everything you do is documents, referrals, reports, affidavits, forms, and a million little notes for this and that. It is imperative you are accurate, use the format required, and be honest. If you saying “Have you tried not taking drugs?” to a client sends them into a rage, you don’t write “Client was heightened and threatened me without reason at today’s session” in the notes. That’s putting a knife in their back.
”Client was triggered when I, the practitioner, made an inappropriate remark (”Have you tried not taking drugs?”) today. They told me I am a “fucking whore who should kill myself” and threw their chair across the room before leaving the building. I have discussed this matter with my supervisor, and we are going to call Client at 3pm today, to provide a formal apology for this statment and attempt to repair the professional working relationship, as they have been making significant progress with this agency until today’s event.” Whole scenario, tells the real story. You will make mistakes, but it is about being able to accept this and move forwards.
Accurate documentation is a must, may be needed for court.
+You will need to have a good memory. A good way of keeping little notes to unlock the full encounter when you write casenotes and reports.
+Make connections. Every client will need a support system around them, and if you have an inroads with different agencies, it will help them out. For example, if your client has drug concerns, then being aware of the agencies and counsellors in the region broadens their safety net.
Knowing the practitioners gives you someone to ask for professional advice around, say “Good Morning Kim, I know your agency handles Centrelink application often for non-english speaking clients. I have a client who is new to the country and is struggling to complete the financial aid forms, they speak Language. Would I be able to refer them to your agency, or will they need a more specific agency who handle Language -speaking persons?”
You have, in a deidentified way, sought help for a client through a known agency and can now refer them pending the answer. Etc.
+If you are not sure about something, ask your supervisor. They have several years on you, and almost all areas of social work prescribes to one or another Acts (legal requirements) which they are required to have a strong grasp on.
Get to know any legislation in the area you are aiming for. This will help immensely.
+Doing a degree gets you two fieldwork practicals, in different areas. These really help you identify which area you want to go for; your main goal going into a degree may not be the one you settle on. Many people have an idea where they want to work and change their minds after their placements, or really feel connected to a different area, etc.
+Mostly, be certain this is what you want.
Have your own support network.
Be aware that you must uphold confidentiality, at all times. No posting to social media people, please...
Be aware that in small communities you are likely shopping at the same place as clients. Ask them how they want you to react when you see each other in public (eg. please don’t acknowledge me, or happy to give a wave) so they feel comfortable.
Don’t disclose personal information to a client. There’s a difference between “Yes, I can see that you are having trouble with baby; I recall they get quite fussy at teething time, have you tried a cold biting ring?” and “My son, Chadley, is eight but when he was two he used to just keep biting the furniture and his poor teacher, Mrs Allyways! At least he’s grown out of it now, but I just know Bailey’s going into that phase soon, the dangers of having kids a few years apart!”
I know who your child had as a teacher, and now the school as well, esp if its a small town. I know you have two children, their names, and your last name so I could go get them from school if I wanted to. I know you work until 5pm, and someone could pick them up.
Etc.
Mostly, be a decent human being who does their best and doesn’t walk in thinking they’re better than everyone, and you can do okay. Have a good support network, use them, and seek help if you struggle.
Uni is drawn out and a bit boring, but you will get a lot from it (even if you only see it in hindsight).
#dunno#kind of on the spot there for this one#Anonymous#also if you were the fucking nightmare bully bitch at school who is now thinking they're a caregiver type who should be a nurse or social w#the answer is NO

Kevin Waters Ward
| Name: Kevin Waters Ward (a very UNFORTUNATE name oof)
| Nicknames: Floatie/Rot/Rottie (he likes those nicknames a lot even tho there aren’t even related to his real name like at ALL)
| Gender: He/Him and It/It’s
| Age: N/A
| Height: 5’0”
| Species/Race Drowned (Zombie)
| Eye Color: Turquoise (there’s a glow from his mouth that’s also turquoise)
| Hair Color: Dark Brown (his hair is pretty gross honestly, it’s matted and weirdly slimy, its just- super gross (his hair is long as well because he doesn’t… really know how to cut it)
| Skin Color/Body Type: Ocean Blue and his body type is average really not too chubby or too skinny
| Appearance: Let’s start off with his outfit, his main outfit and only one is the typical ones Drowned’s wear, after all it's simple and honestly the best thing considering they have to stay in water, it’s the ripped and tattered brown shirt and pants, he wishes he could wear other types of clothing honestly, he also wishes he could come out of the water just in general, sure, there’s nighttime or rainy weather but still, he doesn’t wanna just HAVE to go back to the water- either way, he has pointed ears, he has normal teeth surprisingly ...except for of course his fangs, he has claws as well, and before I forget he has a circle beard as well, he has parts of his rib showing, some of his cheek has been torn off exposing a bit of his jaw/teeth, he’s got some bone showing as well on his arms and legs, his joints have also seemingly been stitched together by someone… He also has a few stitches on his fingers as well.
| Personality: Given his mob’s nature naturally people and others are terrified of him, and he honestly wishes it could be different, he’s got a LOT of curiosity to him especially when it comes to humans, humans fascinate him honestly… He’s also a bit childlike as well, he can’t speak TOO well and big words confuse him but gosh dammit he’s trying his best, he’s also an EXTREMELY slow learner so please be patient with him, hates loud noises and will start crying (him crying is really gross, both sound wise and look wise), especially if you yell at him or threaten him with anything, he can’t blame you if you threaten him though or if your scared even if he doesn’t want that, he can see how terrifying he is.
Despite being so friendly, sweet, and outgoing, he does have the urges to nibble sometimes, his bite is unfortunately toxic so if you get bitten (not nibbled on but I’d still be careful either way…) but if you get bitten welp have fun with zombification motherfucker lmao, he does love to nibble on things and chew things, so honestly just give him a fuckin squeaky/chew toy of some kind and that way he won’t have a big of an urge to chew on skin or anything, he does try to control his urges though, he doesn’t like how strong they can get sometimes, how strong his urge is to p much eat someone, its frightening… But he tries his best, humans just… Fascinate him so much, he wishes he could get close to them without them being afraid or trying to hurt him, he just wants to hold someone (touch starved boy) and he wants to feel their skin, their hair, etc-
Do humans feel warm or cold like him? Does human skin feel weird like his orr normal…? ...He wonders what it’d be like to be a human sometimes, he’s babey essentially excluding when he has his “episodes” however, when those happen he can become very violent and aggressive even though he doesn’t mean to, he just let himself go waaaayy too long without food, I’d recommend running when he’s like this because I mean, ya don’t wanna let him eat you, do ya? ….Don’t answer that, its a no, no you don’t… Whenever he’s finished with doing t h a t however if he’s hurt or worse killed anyone he always winds up beating himself up over it, there’s a lot of breaking down and crying involved, he didn’t mean to, he didn’t WANT this…
Being a Drowned can be such a burden sometimes...
(tl;dr: Friendly, sweet, outgoing, just wants friends, someone to hold, touch starved lad for sure, has episodes here n there and can go into a frenzy which he always feels guilty bout afterwards even if he didn’t actually hurt anyone, sometimes wishes he could be human bc being a Drowned feels like such a burden, loves to chew on things a l o t, childlike for sure, hates that people are usually terrified of him, its 100% gotta be like a FULL ON bite, nibbling/a lil chewing doesn’t REALLY count as long as it doesn’t wind up breaking skin)
| Side Facts: He has a Trident, he never ever uses it but its there in case he needs protection, it was given to him at a young age and despite being pretty slow (both learning wise and slow movement wise usually) he’s REALLY good and VERY accurate with the tridents, not sure about a bow/crossbow however, he’s never used one of those but I can say with confidence he’d probs be damn good with one of those as well, despite me saying he’s slow, he’s pretty fuckin fast when in water, one moment he could be way down below in the deepest parts of the ocean, next moment he’s right beside you or in your boat even like ….hh...hiiiii… ...please dont shoot the lad or stab him- he means no harm genuinely.
He loves exploring the world, its so vast and beautiful… So much out there, so much he STILL hasn’t even seen yet!
(lmao for a funny side thing, I imagine Kevin is SUPER lucky like he’s found shipwrecks, desert temples, jungle temples, fucking STRONGHOLDS of all things, ruined nether portals, etc-
what’s sad though is he’s easy to trick/manipulate/guilt, if you wanna go to one of those all it takes is a promise of being his friend and then boom, you’ve got a free ticket to one of these things ….DAMMIT I SAID THIS’D BE FUNNY AND IT TURNED SAD- JUST, DONT LIE TO HIM- JUST BE HIS FRIEND DAMMIT fkjdslkfdjksl;f, he’s a very sweet Drowned who won’t ever even attack you, he just wants someone to be with and that’s all.
The other Drowned however I will say don’t like him for how soft he is towards people, he’s a zombie-esque mob, he needs to ACT like one, he needs to stop holding his urges back and just go for people like the others, the zombies along with husks, p much any zombie based mob doesn’t like him for these factors and that he’ll actually PROTECT people from his own damn kind, traitor much?
He doesn’t much like them either though, they are all mean, all they care about is hurting and killing innocent people… In the end all they care about is themselves really, he cares about others and he’ll NEVER stop caring about them, even if they hurt him, he usually chalks that up to them just attacking out of fear which he understands, I will say though… Despite being so passive and friendly, he isn’t just going to let you “kill” him… He won’t fight back but he is going to try and get away at the very least.
Also! His favorite music discs are Ward (why I chose his last name LMAO and shh he doesn’t need to know bout that first bit sounding like funeral music just don’t even tell him),he REALLY loves Cat and Far as well, and finally Strad is one of his comfort songs that can help him calm down.
He’s a bit scared of Mellohi, that song gives him a feeling of dread, Chirp isn’t one of his favorites really… That song makes him feel weird… Music Disc 11 absolutely TERRIFIES this poor boy, any time he hears that playing on someone’s juke box he swims the fuck AWAY as FAST as he can, feels the same as Thirteen as he does with 11.
He’s got no opinion on Stal really, he’s neutral toward that song- Mall is a good song for long journeys, he loves Wait for how funny it sounds, and even though its EXTREMELY rare to hear, Pigstep actually isn’t one of his favorites unfortunately, that type of music just isn’t his cup of tea, it isn’t like TERRIBLE tho by any means.
Oh yeah a few more things, his home is actually a cave, it's under the water but the part he’s in SPECIFICALLY that he’s made himself, he made sure to clear the water from that area to put his chests and items in, those items are stolen ones or ones left behind from people, he just… Likes having things like that, and if somehow he for once meets a human friend he’ll be more than happy to share his items or even give some! ...He does make sure to keep water nearby, he’s made a tiny pool right outside his cave house just in case he can’t make it back to the other water sources before he feels dried out.

The arc review continues.
Someone had to do the Chris Pratt velociraptor meme. We were willing to take on that burden if no one else was.
Deciding to be honest and doing it are two different things. You’ll notice Jade mostly avoids her biggest victims during the Derse plaza sequence and first talks to her partner in crime.
Fun fact: Although I handled Roxy when she talks to betas, other logs between an alpha and a beta were drafted via msparp between me and Gill. This led to those logs being, on average, longer and more tangent-riddled. The worst offender is the Dave and Dirk convo. Often I sliced a lot out for the final version. We also often went off script on weird tangents (including me once threatening Gill while she was in the bathroom when she kept sending me metal gear memes). This log’s text file is referred to as jajane charades.txt because of one said tangent, which I will repost for your entertainment. This is the dvd commentary after all.
JANE: YOU SEE ]] JANE: WHEN A YOUNG LASS HITS YOUR AGE SHE STARTS GETTING... URGES ]] JANE: MY DAD TAUGHT ME THESE URGES MUST BE SUPPRESSED UNTIL MARRIAGE. ]] JADE: i have a cloning machine i am unstoppable ]] JADE: also jane sweetie we are going to have to talk about other orientations someday ]] JANE: I like men!! ]] JADE: yes but you see there is a whole broad world of orientations out there ]]] JADE: it is very simple ]] JADE: for example i am JADE: flails arms randomly ]] JADE: and john is JADE: crosses arms firmly over chest ]] JANE: Ohhhh. JADE: it is the all or nothing option] JADE: and the salad bar is calling your name ] JANE: And jake is... ]] JANE: Stares blankly into space. ]] JANE: Emits confused noises. ]] JADE: i dunno he had fake dates with dolls ] JADE: i have no word for that one] JADE: or gesture ] JANE: He did what? ]] JADE: lmao ] JADE: i suppose he had urges ] JANE: Well. ]] JANE: He is a strange, silly boy. ]] JADE: and a strange silly old man ] JANE: And the more things change the more they stay the same!! ]] JANE: Hoo hoo, and Dirk is quietly staring at Jake's rear end from the corner, while Roxy is rolling around on the floor laughing at everything, I guess. ]] JADE: dave: slightly different flailing motion ]] JADE: rose: waggles eyebrows at all women in the vicinity ]] JADE: ok i think this log is officially dead ] JANE: This is all bonus content ]] JANE: It must be seen I demand it ]] JADE: ok]
Ok now let’s get back on track
JADE: i dont know what it was like for anyone else JADE: but i guess for us that meant JADE: it was just?
Jane and Jade have no way of knowing that Aranea rigged the clock, poor things.
JANE: Of course, my death wasn't permanent after I died this time under similar circumstances. JANE: So perhaps we were victims of a Skaian clearance sale? JANE: Doomed timeline, everyone must go!
Tbh I feel like this would help explain some of the honestly sorta sketchy clock rulings. They’re already doomed, might as well keep ‘em down. That’s our justification about why Jane didn’t die in a similar situation in TLC.
JADE: do you ever worry you dont feel the right way about your friends?
The core difference between John and Jade, at least in my interpretation, is that John represses a lot of things unconsciously, and Jade is doing it intentionally. Jade is fully aware of all her bitter, angry, or jealous impulses. She considers them all personal failings, and she tries to squash them. Unfortunately that just made them more nasty when they came out. I think if Jade hadn’t demonized every ‘bad’ aspect of herself so much, grimbark Jade wouldn’t have been so aggressive... she would have been more resigned and ‘guys if we just cooperate maybe fewer people will get hurt’ rather than ‘i’m gonna kick my brother in the gut’.
Speaking of kicking her brother in the gut, let's get to the first of those uncomfy conversations.
From Karkat's perspective, he got angry, sent some nasty messages to the humans for a few hours, and then cooled off. No real harm done. But from Jade's perspective, he bullied her for years of an already crummy childhood. Considering her typical attitude versus how hostile she is when he contacts her, he must've really gotten on her nerves. She had no real reason to kill him for a "demonstration". She did that out of vengeance, and now she has to admit it.
JOHN: i know you grew up alone for a while, and you let us see your house, but whenever we tried to ask questions you changed the subject. JOHN: what were we supposed to do? JOHN: i didn't want to pry! if you said it was fine, i thought it was. JOHN: and now you're mad because i didn't assume my sister was lying to me? JOHN: i guess i won't make that mistake again!!
The other kids on the ship must have learned at least some details of Jade's childhood. Again, it seems kinda unrealistic that they didn't ask *any* questions, but that's what I have to work with. John feels betrayed and frustrated that Jade is now punishing him for not magically knowing the things she tried to hide from him, which is an entirely fair reaction. Maybe he didn't pay as much attention as he could have, but she deliberately made it harder for him to notice, so they both have been contributing to damaging this relationship. Jade eventually admits that she fucked up. She felt they would like her more as the peppy, supportive friend, and maybe that’s true, but that has only made this revelation harder to swallow.
Karkat is bewildered in the background, because since Jade was pissed at him, she didn't care enough about his opinion to hide herself. Ironically, it's the people she doesn't respect who know her best.
KARKAT: SHE LITERALLY TOLD ME TO TELL HER WHEN I WENT TO HELL SO SHE COULD SET UP A REMINDER TO THROW A PARTY. KARKAT: THAT IS AN ACTUAL THING THAT HAPPENED.
That log is a riot.
There's an emphasis on everyone admitting that this happened and dealing with it rather than sweeping it under the rug. In canon, the implications of grimbark and crockertier kinda get glossed over, partly because it's unclear how much of their actions got retconned away. That suggests all that stuff is still festering. We wanted to make sure it gets talked about so it’s less likely Jade and Jane snap on their own later because they simply can’t take holding it in anymore.
Jade and Jake! Another combo log that had to get sliced down quite a bit. This conversation is a lot more heavily tied to Jake's arc than Jade's so I won't spend a bunch of time on it.
JADE: i deserve some sort of update
I made some joke about this being @Andrew Hussie but considering the kinds of updates he finally gave the poor girl (get sexually harassed and stabbed! every girl’s dream) I take it back.
JADE: is the xenon inert?
If the girl's supposed to be a science genius I'm gonna bring chemistry into the story, ok? I HL’d in chem. I miss it a little. Plus, chemistry is directly relevant to the Alpha session. Noble gasses are inert and have trouble forming bonds without outside influence. It takes the addition of the Beta planets to create an octet of eight electrons around the Skaian nucleus, making a stable atom. Everyone hanging out on Jane’s planet probably got a chipmunk voice. The possibilities are endless.
JADE: i think you have taken quite enough punches for the day JAKE: That one to the solar plexus really did smart... JADE: how about the villains take a turn for a change? JADE: that arrangement sounds good to me
In the future, Jake will get to punch himself as a villain. So best of both worlds, I guess.
Moving on to Davesprite... Jesus christ, this conversation. The one good thing I can say about it is it did generate this gem.
I used to test the text color code before we put it up on mspfa (these days I just say fuck it and we fix the errors when we see them). This effect doesn't happen on the mspfa page with the smaller text box, but I think it's a pretty good summary of the log as a whole. In fact I opened this log to look at it again, saw the wall of orange, and felt my heart quail within me. But this is an arc commentary which means I don't have to read it line by line if I don't want to.
Anyway, this was a pain in the ass because Homestuck does not like to let people who are dating talk to each other, a phenomenon I tongue-in-cheek call the Homestuck relationship curse. Current couples almost never speak, unless it's part of a group conversation or they're breaking up. Go back and check if you don’t believe me. These two are even worse, because although Dave pre-split talks to Jade and Davesprite talks to Jadesprite, Davesprite-as-Davesprite never talks to Jade-as-Jade ever. Which makes it really fucking hard to write a whole thing about how stuff broke bad, let me tell you. I had about three sentences to go off of and so mostly relied on piecing best guesses together from general character analysis, which I won't go into in depth because no one asked for a DVD commentary for this scene in particular. This is another conversation that got overhauled once or twice - in earlier drafts Davesprite was a lot more passive, but I figured he's had a long day and is ready to snap back, and I needed him to because I was, after all, trying to call Jade on some of her shit too. This conversation essentially serves the same purpose as the one with John for Jade - she lets people know what's going on with her but is also faced with the fact that it's partly on her that she kept her mouth shut for so long.
The fact that he's lurking in the background of a bunch of panels is because I should never make idle comments around the artist. I made some joke about being afraid that your recently evil ex will just fuckin shoot you for talking shit and Gill took it upon herself to make that a reality. Same with John hiding behind a rock, or the entire existence of Janerezi in this household. I've learned to stop making jokes.
Then John fucks up with his power of mental association powers and teleports Jack Noir along with Jade to the green sun. Good job, John.
Jade's closure with her traveling companions mostly caps off the messiest part of her 'be honest with your friends' journey, although she still has Dave and Rose to talk to. The next bit is more focused on her working through the way she finds self-worth through being powerful rather than simply being, represented in her Green Sun quest. And that seems like a good place to break for a new post to ME.
