Authentic Story of the Shining Force - Saint Fencer Max - Chapter 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Translation notes:
So, uh. Elliot's name is rendered with two t's in the og game, but a single one in the GBA version. I had never paid attention to that at all until I had already edited all these pages, and I don't care enough to change it.
Cain's sword causes an explosion here. In the game, it is indeed capable of summoning flames.
Tumblr media
This is a perfect illustration of how I feel about these names, but I do wonder what the actual intention was, since Cain is supposed to be already gone. The original image is even cut off weirdly in the middle of the text, and i don't think it's a problem with the scan, since every scanned page has a black border showing that the paper itself doesn't cut there. I wonder about the production of this thing, but i'll wait until i translate the author's comments before saying more.
The map in the previous chapter was very accurate to the beta map of the game. The smaller map here showing Rindo however looks off, the coast is different, and there seems to be a river directly to the north of Rindo, as opposed to the path to Shade Abbey. Perhaps fitting since Shade is skipped here.
Metaphaluna, huh? Needlessly to say, the country of the gods/Ancients is called only Metapha in the final game. Also, in this panel, it pops up as an alternate reading for 前世紀 (ancient times), not the name of a country specifically. I chose to romanize the last part as "luna" for three reasons. One is that the continent of Rune is actually rendered as Lune in at least two guides. I take romanizations from JP guides with a grain of salt since they sometimes look bad/unnatural, or are inconsistent (Pelle's name for example has been romanized as both Peil or Payle depending on the book). I checked though, and town names however are consistent in both the books I've seen romanizing things. The second reason is that the beta map used at this point has a fairly noticeable crescent moon shaped island right in the middle. In the final game, we can't know exactly where Metapha is, because you only teleport there. But I wonder if this island had something to do with it at some point. The third reason is simply I saw no better reason. Metaphalna and Metapharuna would be just as valid, but don't have any meaning to them.
The biggest equation next to Tao as she explains the magic types is very clearly a E=mc². Look close.
I've retranslated Elliot's scenes from the game thinking it would be relevant to these notes. Now I feel it really isn't, but you get more content so you should be happy.
My main point with that is that Elliot does not say anything about Cain in the game. In the GBA version, Balbazak does try revealing Max, Cain and Darksol's identities before dying, but that's not a thing in the og. So yeah I really translated a bunch of stuff for nothing this time! Except not because Darksol is awesome in that scene and everyone should get to see it.
Now let's talk about Otrant. I have mentioned before that Otrant's gender is never explicitly said, and they speak in a mostly gender neutral way (I feel like there's a few masculine patterns in some lines, but I'm not confident enough to say for certain). What I hadn't noticed is that they also use lipstick in the games, which is probably what sparked these observations to begin with, but i'm uh, occasionally not smart. In any case, if any of these aspects were done at this point in development the artist here sure ignored them, and drew a regular old man who gets called an old man. They hate to see an androgynous boss winning.
I don't recall Otrant's third eye being called "Eye of Truth" anywhere else, but the manual of the game does say it can see the past and the future.
Otrant's naming of the Shining Force is a bit more elaborate here, but the wording is very similar to the actual game.
Finally, let's play spot the cameo!
Tumblr media
We've got Gong, Zylo, one of the birds, and probably Anri. Easy.
Tumblr media
Here, besides the obvious three who were actually introduced in the story, we again have a bird, Anri between Ken and Hans, Gong to the right, and Mae and Gort behind Luke. If you read the pre-release page you know that Gort was meant to be Mae's servant at some point, so this might be why they're together, or it's just coincidence because they still join around the same time in the final game. More importantly, to Ken's left we have...
Tumblr media
Some guys. Who are these. They could be made up by the artist (there will be another case of this), but I find it curious that the artist had to do that when there are so many character to pick from, and he clearly wanted to depict official characters here. For one, there's evidence that Earnest was already designed at that point in development. However, that link also shows that Vankar didn't have a portrait by that time at least, and Vankar would have already joined by this point in the story. So could the bald centaur here be a beta Vankar, or the artist's interpretation of Vankar via unfinished art? Maybe, but just a guess in the end. Mostly I'm just fascinated by how detailed this guy is compared to even Mae and Gort's cameos. The other guy isn't so i don't think about them nearly as much.
#shining series#shining force#saint fencer max#saint fencer max translation#sf cain#sorry i mean 'giga cain'. lmao#this is what i meant when i said i was hysterical about the chapter names btw. how are these real names#also. 'what a stupid face' lol. definitely do not share any genes with this guy or whatever#he is coping#sfm max#god the battle scene is. so bad. now you get what i meant by this thing not engaging the premise right. zero group battle#he's just doing random shonen shit. fellas he's a swordsman not sonic the hedgehog. why is he dodging lasers#sfm tao cantal#in a good manga a villain telling the fire mage 'no matter how strong the flames they can be a force for good'#would be some sort of character moment#don't expect anything of it here though#also the magic thing is infuriating because it's so close to my headcanons but fails the landing into some bizarre anti-science bullshit??#mages are said to be studious everywhere else so to put a line about equations there is just wack. also manarina literally has machines#just make the point about actual environment destruction you dumbass#i wonder how masaki wachi felt on this because the spells in the GBA version often show machines (and blaze 4 is a laser)#but torasu does spout some anti-tech stuff in his HQ lines#still less bad than here tho#sf elliot#you lose something of his character by not showing the fight#but the talk is far more interesting than the game#if you removed his mentions of darksol in pao and used this after the battle i think it would be the best portrayal of him#i think about him a lot. there's the shape of a good character but it never nails the landing to me in any version#though perhaps this is more due to the characters' full acceptance of him than he himself#which is why final conflict again wins by having his own son condemn him#...and then loses again by having lynx be the worst version ever of 'villain is okay because he has Honor' in this series

FATHER, CAN I DIE?
✶﹒ platonic yandere! manhwa fathers x suicidal/overworked daughter! reader
summary : maybe they should just lock you in your room to make sure that you won't do something dangerous.
a.n : i plan to make this a series, what do you think?
abel heilon
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
let's start with the most chill platonic yandere! out of the guys that i will feature in this post! abel heilon, the duke of the north with a simple mindset of 'if you mess with me then i'll mess with ya' we all know how protective he is with fiona and siegren. but just imagine, what if— just what if he has an illegitimate child who's related to him by blood that he hid from the public's eyes.
anyways, the first time he met you. he became sure of one thing. damn, you were indeed his child. with that silver hair, blue eyes and personality of yours— you were indeed his child. he can't deny that because you looked like a kid version of him. well, it's not like he is denying it tho— but what the fuck is wrong with your brain anyways?!
he doesn't know if you were abused before he met you. but why in the hell are you so obsessed with suicide anyways?! why the fuck are you even throwing yourself in battles when you were a support mage?! for the fuck sake! stop! yes, you have above average amount of mana! but the hell?! you're not as strong as fiona nor siegren! stop it!
if it's not for siegren then he wouldn't know the fact that you happily greeted the assassin that was sent by the imperial family. according to him, before siegren saved you from the assassin you even have the guts to propose to that damn assassin about committing suicide together since according to you, you have fallen in love with him— hearing that story, abel couldn't help but facepalm. (first name), you're thirteen! and that assassin is already thirty-six or worse, older!
maybe because of the stress of managing the north and keeping you safe from your suicide attempts. abel finally snapped.
look, abel likes watching you enjoying your freedom. but damn, if he doesn't do anything about this— he might end up burying you before you even reach the age of 18. he won't hurt you, he swears. that was the last thing that he will do to you. but that doesn't mean that he can't take preventive measures to make sure that you were safe.
platonic yandere! abel heilon was one of the chillest platonic yandere that existed. he will let you do anything that you want, he won't take away your freedom nor hurt you. he isn't also overbearing to the point that it was suffocating. but don't make him snap, because he can be the most suffocating and controlling parent existed.
now, on your sixteenth birthday— to celebrate it. you decided to jump onto the freezing river near the manor. you expected that you'll wake up inside your room— but no. when you opened your eyes, you were inside an unfamiliar room that has no windows. seeing that you can't use your magic, you were sure that there's a magic restricting device placed around here. what the hell is happening?
the door had opened, you looked at who it was and saw abel looking at you with a smug grin. you tried to ask him what is going on but instead of replying— abel only ruffled your hair saying that it will be only him and you from now on. and that was when you realized one thing— abel had taken your freedom away from you.
but abel didn't care. cry until you have no tears left, he doesn't care. the only thing that he cared about was keeping you alive. and this is the only thing that he know to achieve his goal. but don't worry, he will visit you everyday and give you books to make sure that you won't get bored. so, can you stop being a btch and appreciate his efforts?
he doesn't care if your eyes lost its usual enthusiasm and spark. he doesn't care if you stop eating at some point— because abel can shove the food inside your mouth to make sure that you stay alive.
oh, by the way— fiona was the one who made the room where you were staying now. she just wanted to make sure that you were safe! and the only place where you can be safe is the place where you can't use magic! so, forgive them, will ya?
“should i just cut off your arms? so that you won't be able to use your magic again?”
gallahan lombardy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
okay, as far as you know— you are not really a suicidal type of person. but for your father, gallahan lombardy you are. because for gallahan, overworking is another way to try to kill yourself after all.
gallahan is a sweet person, i swear. he won't hurt you at all and isolating you? no, no, no, gallahan won't do that! but he still couldn't help but become paranoid when it came to you. you were way too focused on studying— maybe because of the pressure that you were getting from the other people.
your sleep only lasted for two or four hours, you always isolate yourself inside the library. and gallahan didn't like it at all— look, you need to take it easy and rest. the only time you leave the library was when gallahan and tia drag you outside to eat in a cafe or buy new clothes.
platonic yandere! gallahan loves to spoil you. you wanted to buy books? here you go. want to try home-cooked foods? sure, he'll cook it for you. do you want to go to the festival with tia? alright! as long as he will go with you two.
but then, a certain event made gallahan snap. it was a normal day and gallahan entered the library to drag you outside so that you could socialize with the family. but then, he saw you unconscious on the floor, buried in the books and your nose was bleeding. gallahan was panicking, he didn't know what to do. what if you don't wake up? what if something bad happens to you? or worse— what if you die? if it wasn't for shananet who saw her younger brother's panicked face and her niece's condition. then gallahan won't be able to calm down and call the family doctor.
and what is the doctor's diagnosis? you were overworked. and after hearing that, rulac lombardi, your grandfather along with your auntie and uncles saw how your father's face darkened while looking at you who was peacefully sleeping on the bed.
and then, after that incident. you couldn't help but become confused when gallahan didn't scold you— instead, when you woke up. you saw him smiling softly at you. he didn't even ask you to take it easy. he just lets you do what you want.
but what you found odd was your father started giving you foods and drinks everytime and after consuming those things. you started feeling tired and before you knew it, you always ends up asleep. and once you woken up, you were already on your room. with tia cuddling with you while your father was asleep while sitting on the chair next to your bed also asleep.
knowing how innocent your father was, you never suspect a thing. you just kept on eating and drinking the things that he was giving to you. and you never questioned why you always get tired after it. your father loves you so much, so he wouldn't do anything— right?
plot twist, gallahan actually puts drug on your food and drinks to make sure that you will take a rest and never overwork yourself again. but a year later, you started losing your sense of sight because of it. but gallahan and tia don't care when you have them? oh, just thinking about their sweet (first name) being dependent on them was enough to make them very happy.
“sorry, honey! this is just a precaution, okay?”

𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐄𝐃
making the phantom bride final four feel things (it's my favorite event sue me)
warnings — suggestive? light flirting.
Tumblr media
𝐀. 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐎𝐋𝐀
"stop glaring or i'll mess it up."
as if to prove your point, his brows pinched further, causing you huff in irritation. "okay. what's wrong? you were psyched up like two seconds ago."
"yeah, well, that was two seconds ago and now is now." his rebuttal caused you to roll your eyes. 'boys' you thought as a viable excuse before trying yet again to straighten his eyeliner.
his eyes darted around the room where the others did similar things: riddle fixed his lapels, epel examined his bouquet, and rook practiced his lines, everyone was unaffected by the current circumstance.
not the rampaging bride that is going to doom a teenage boy to the eternal afterlife, no, the fact that you were straddling him in a small vanity chair.
why was such a compromising position seen so casually? now that he thinks about it, the two of you were rather touchy – piggyback rides, you holding his arms, hugs, etc. – still, this is really teetering the line of friendly affection.
"done!" beaming, you leaned back a bit, causing him to hold on to your waist a bit firmer to keep you upright. "riddle! you have a keen eye, is it straight or what?"
the house warden walked over to the two of you and ace was sure he'd call out how inappropriate this is, but he didn't. instead, he nodded and complimented you on your handiwork.
"no need to thank me." you snorted, getting up to go help the others.
riddle chuckled, patting his freshman on the shoulder as he spoke, "are you upset that they're casually intimate with you or are you upset they might act like that with someone else?"
"w-what?!" ace's cheeks flushed red.
"i may be romantically handicapped but i'm more perceptive to it than you think. i can only suggest to say something sooner than later."
he lowered his head, still blushing, diverting his gaze away from your swaying figure as his house warden's words sunk in.
damn. he did want it to mean something.
ace doesn't know which is more embarrassing: his crush on you or that riddle was the one to make him realize.
Tumblr media
𝐑. 𝐑𝐎𝐒𝐄𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐒
"may i offer a suggestion?"
riddle hummed, meeting your eyes in the vanity mirror. "and what might that be? it's impossible to elevate perfection, you know."
ignoring his arrogant statement, you took a seat, propping his collar up and undoing his tie. "i think you'll stand out more it you tie it differently." you explained your actions, pausing momentarily until he nodded for you to continue.
he watched as you knotted and twirled the fabric, straightening it here and there, and you were done a minute later.
"a bow? it's rather ... cutesy."
"but you're cutesy."
riddle choked, coughing loudly and catching the attention of the other occupants of the room. as they began to walk towards him, he waved them off, effectively keeping them away from his flustered form.
"w-why would you–"
"the cuter you look, the less they'll take you seriously, and as one of the strongest mages left that's perfect for us to break their defenses."
of course, you meant it as a battle advantage – that is your area of expertise, after all.
"don't look so surprised." you joked, flattening out his collar and he hopes you can't feel the heated blush on his neck. "you were thinking the same thing too, right?"
"no, actually... i can't say that i was."
you tilted your head sideways, doubting his words but dropping the subject. "well, from now on don't look down on being cute, kay?"
standing from your seat, you left his vanity to tend to grimm, who, was arguing with ace about who knows what.
if he had half a mind he'd scold them both and cut off the small feline's magic, however, his mind was completely blank.
cute. you think he's cute.
riddle didn't take it as he usually would. for some off reason he felt giddy inside, wishing you meant it in a different ... more flirtatious manner. the poor boy has zero experience but wishing might work, right?
Tumblr media
𝐑. 𝐇𝐔𝐍𝐓
"you need to talk normally to us so they won't be suspicious. try again."
if rook wasn't used to a strict training regime he'd undoubtedly call you a harsh teacher, but, as a lover of all things beautiful and magnificent he tossed the thought aside.
"no can do mon cherie. her actions are horrendous and nowhere near beautiful." he signed, placing a hand over his wounded heart. "but you, darling, are as heroic and magnificent as ever."
he watched as you rolled your eyes, placing a hand on your hip as you began to reprimand him for his lack of seriousness.
although he heard the words coming from your mouth, he couldn't help but focus on everything else.
despite not being a contender in this entire ordeal you were still dressed beautifully. the color is ethereal on you, he must make note of the hue for later ... and whatever scent you adorned had his senses on ten.
don't you know never to where perfume when there's a hunter nearby?
"rook! are you even listening to–"
all too suddenly he had your hand in his, the other gripping your waist firmly to keep your surprised form upright.
"let me give it to you straight then. the unseen beauty of your compassion and tender heart outshines that of a world class model. not that you aren't attractive, no, no, quite the opposite."
"how greedy can you possibly be?"
deep. rich. clear. his voice was positively enthralling when he dropped that phony accent (it does have a charm of its own in your opinion)
"perfect!" you beamed, his grip on you loosening in surprise of his own. "i knew you could do it. she'll be knocked off her translucent feet i tell you!"
rook allowed you to walk away, scolding epel who wiped his makeup off for the ninth time deeming it unmanly.
he couldn't help but laugh. he broke character, purposely, but he did nevertheless, and don't think he didn't notice the flash of attraction in your eyes.
never let your guard down in front of a predator, mon cherie.
Tumblr media
𝐄. 𝐅𝐄𝐋𝐌𝐈𝐄𝐑
"i swear on the seven you'll have more problems than a poof of blush if you keep testing my patience."
epel felt a chill run down his spine at your words but he stood his ground. he let you do the liner, tousle his hair all nice, and even spray a painfully potent cologne – but he draws the line at that pigmented puff of doom.
"i'm telling ya i'm not wearing that!" he argued back from the other side of the table. the two of you were playing chicken to the amusement of the others who were nearly done with their preparations.
"stop being a big baby!"
"i ain't no baby!"
he flinched back as you narrowed your eyes in a glare. for a moment, he felt sorry that grimm had to live with such a scary person.
"fine. don't wear the blush." you slid the compacted container to his side of the table, raising your hands in surrender.
"let me redo your hair then. it'll fit the look better, baby."
yeah. that's right, you better listen when he — wait, baby?
you pushed him down in the nearest chair, undoing the small ponytail you had before in favor of something else.
epel thought this earlier but your hands did feel amazing as you twirled and pinned his hair. he nearly fell asleep the first time but he knew better than to let down his guard.
"what do you think of this, baby?"
you were teasing him but jeez, why did it make his heart race?
"doesn't matter what i think." he huffed, and you laughed softly at the statement.
"well, i'm no ghost bride with unnaturally specific standards but you look good, baby." this time, you drawled out the pet name, winking, and then leaving him alone to question everything.
in the end he came to the conclusion that he should've just let you put the damn blush on.

The Arrangement (6) - Broken
Tumblr media
Chapter summary: A long overdue conversation is finally had and things take a turn....
Pairing: Astarion x female!Tav
Warnings: 18+. Angst. Hurt/Comfort. Mentions of past trauma.
Word count: 5.7k
Series Masterlist . Ao3
If you could have it your way, you'd immediately cast Mage Hand and shove Ava through the deepest pits of the Underdark, all the way down to Grymforge and until she was faced with molten lava rivers coursing below her.
Whether you'd drop her or not would entirely depend on a set of answers you intended on squeezing out of her – quite literally, if possible.
You crossed your arms, watching as the woman dressed in a burgundy red dress made her way inside, holding that nauseating and overly sweet smile of hers.
She came bearing a satchel, which she handed to Astarion as soon as she stood before him.
“Are you well?” she asked, holding his free hand momentarily.
He gave her a dramatic sigh. “Within reason. It's hardly an ideal scenario, but I'll manage.”
She rubbed her thumb across the back of his hand, nodding with supposed concern on her face.
Something about the way she looked at him made you want to gauge your eyes out.
Ugh…
It took an inhuman amount of mental fortitude and no less amount of restraint to keep yourself from scoffing.
Gale gave you an inquisitive side-glance, but remained silent.
“Who's this? Your playmate?”
Ah.
Lae'zel's bluntness could render many speechless and rabid at worst or slightly taken aback at best.
It seemed that Ava fell under an unexpected third category: sheer amusement.
But it was Astarion who spoke for her, “Ever so direct, Lae'zel." He let out a dramatic laugh. "Charming as always."
"I do not care for such frivolities."
His face dropped with an eye-roll. "It was a joke."
"You're the only one laughing."
You had to hold back a chuckle.
Astarion merely glared at her.
Her eyes narrowed dangerously. “So, who is she? Your hairdresser?”
“This is Lae'zel – a githyanki extraordinaire. Fierce in battle with her sword and off the field with her words, as you can tell.”
Ava extended an arm out to her, earning a scoff from Lae'zel who refused to return the courtesy.
You beamed in joy at her antics.
Astarion moved to your side and Ava immediately spoke up before he could, “Oh, we've already met.”
“Ah, yes. At The Blushing Mermaid?” he said, tapping his chin.
“More than once.”
You scowled. “A single encounter would have been one too many.”
He glared at you, squinting his eyes inquisitively.
“Feisty . I like you already.” she said with a pout.
You considered hexing her right there and then.
Just like with Lae'zel, she extended a hand out to you.
You crossed your arms instead, earning a narrowed glare from Astarion.
Ava's overly sweet smile only widened.
Astarion then waved dismissively at the only person in the room he had yet to introduce.
“Oh - and that is Gale.”
Unlike you and Lae'zel, he moved to take one of Ava's hand in his own before planting a kiss on the back. “Gale of Waterdeep. What a pleasure to meet your acquaintance, madam."
Gale!
The betrayal had you shooting invisible daggers at him through your eyes.
Ava brought a hand to her chest. “What a gentleman.”
Your patience now spent, you moved towards her. “Where did you go after I ran into you at The Blushing Mermaid?”
Ava turned to face you. “A rather intrusive question, dear.”
“Answer it.”
Astarion was scowling already.
“No. I don't think I will.”
You felt the familiar tingles of fire magic spread along the palm of your hand.
“Where were you when we got arrested, then?”
Gale seemed utterly confused and Lae'zel's face twisted in amusement.
Ava's smile didn't waver once. “She's adorable, Astarion.”
“You little-”
Astarion was already on you before you could lunge forward, rooting you in place.
“Would you excuse us for a moment?” he swiftly interjected, effectively silencing you.
Before you could voice out a protest, you felt him tug at your hand until you were pacing in front of him before bringing both hands to grip your shoulders and prevent you from deterring off the intended path.
“Hey!” you huffed in annoyance.
“Do make yourself at home, darling,” you heard his sweet voice behind you.
“I shall.” Ava chirped.
Your temper exploded from their exchange.
“Actually - don't!” You shouted over your shoulder only to earn a warning squeeze from him.
Astarion pushed you rapidly along the corridor until you were being guided into your own room, door slamming closed behind you.
You immediately jerked away from his grip, turning back around with an indignant growl.
“What in the Nine Hells has gotten into you?” he asked through gritted teeth.
Oh, you were so ready to blow up.
“Me? What is she doing here?”
He quirked an eyebrow at you, crossing his arms. “Is this another one of your jealousy tantrums?”
You gasped at his nerve, outrage nearly blinding you for a split second.
“What – no! I am not jealous! I just dislike her!”
He nodded. “Stating the obvious, but why?”
You groaned in exasperation. “Why what? ”
“Why do you dislike her this much? Surely there must be a solid reason – other than jealousy, that is.”
Insufferable and impossible man!
For a moment, you pondered your answer, not wanting your disdain for her to come across as unwarranted.
But you failed.
Miserably.
“She's… icky! There is something really off about her,” you said, sounding far too exasperated to your liking. “I think she…”
You paused briefly, and Astarion furrowed his brows, waiting for you to go on.
Well.
Maybe you should just voice out your suspicions.
“I think she had something to do with us getting arrested - or that man dying. Maybe both.”
He glared at you in silence for a few seconds before bursting into laughter.
“Oh, aren't you just cute?” He said with a click of his tongue. “Ava would gain nothing from such an ordeal.”
You were fuming at his antics, but tried to rein in your temper. “What does that mean?”
“You'll just have to trust me on this.”
What?
“Are you being serious?”
He tilted his head. “I fail to see how my private affairs are of your concern.”
You placed both hands on your hips, glaring at him with perplexity. “You brought her to my home, so it starts being my concern.”
“Please – as if I want to be here in the first place.”
“Then leave.” You immediately suggested, pointing to the door.
He scoffed with a grimace. “Alright. I will.”
“Great.”
“Wonderful.”
He turned to leave, but suddenly halted as he glanced at the covered window to his right.
You crossed your arms, raising your brows. “Well?”
He twirled on his feet, giving you an artificial smile. “Could it perhaps wait until nightfall, darling? I'm afraid ‘burning to ashes under the midday sun’ isn't quite an invigourating activity to indulge in.”
Your shoulders slumped as he disarmed you with his words.
A wave of sickening guilt took hold of you.
Shit.
What a ridiculous thing to have suggested to him, and even more ridiculous that you two just couldn't seem to be on the same page for more than a few hours at a time.
“I'm sorry.”
He waved a dismissive hand. “Think nothing of it.”
“I'm really not jealous,” you said with a sigh.
It was true.
For the most part.
“I just worry.”
His features softened and the room plunged into silence.
Astarion eventually broke it with a sigh. “She used to be a monster hunter.”
You arched an eyebrow in disbelief. “A monster hunter?”
He nodded.
You had seen your fair share of monster hunters throughout your travels, and if there was one thing you knew for certain was that Ava did not look the part at all.
“And you trusted her word?”
He snorted. “Kind of hard not to with a stake pressed to my chest.”
Your eyes widened in horror. “She did what?!”
“Do calm down. I was just as skeptical when I first met her, so I foolishly asked for proof,” he said with a shrug. “Let's just say my doubts were put to rest.”
Your mouth dropped open in sheer perplexity.
So Astarion had been meddling with someone who hunted his kind for a living.
This was a whole new level of… derangement. Even coming from him.
You found your voice once again. “And you trusted after that?”
“Yes.”
You blinked. “She hunts… vampires!”
“You never listen to me properly, do you? I said she ‘used’ to be one. She practices Alchemy now.”
A lump rose in your throat. “So…. you and her…”
“Let's just say that we found a sweet spot in between and we each provide something useful to the other.”
You gave him a level look. “An arrangement?”
“I suppose you could call it that.”
Another one? Was Astarion hoarding these? First you and now… her?
And what could she possibly provide him?
And then it was as if your body was engulfed in ice shards.
Wait…
“So… what are the terms?”
Did you even want to know?
He seemed to be wondering whether or not to reply, but eventually spoke, “Well, she helps me feel more at ease in terms of being close to others... intimately.”
Your heart sunk into the deepest pits of your core.
“What?”
Now he looked rather impatient, rolling his eyes. “Do not jump to conclusions. She offered a helping hand once she realised how I... severe this was."
Oh.
“When you walked in on us the other night with her naked by my side… nothing had happened.”
You remembered him telling you this.
“Nothing ever does,” he continued, his words sounding slightly bitter. “So I take comfort in her naked form, but only so that my body can get used to it. Nothing more and nothing less.
A pang of discomfort ran through you and you suddenly felt like an idiot.
The rage you felt towards her dwindled rapidly as you understood the true nature of their arrangement.
Ava was merely helping him out with his intimacy.
“Oh.”
“I suppose ‘oh’ covers it.” he said nonchalantly.
“And what does she get in return?”
He shrugged. “My blood.”
What?!
He had to be joking.
You felt the scalding flames of rage for Ava take over your entire body all at once.
Your jaw dropped and you were at a loss for words.
“You – idiot! ” you growled in a fit of pure outrage, smacking his arm. “A blood merchant?! ”
He was scowling so deeply the lines on his face sank tenfold. “Do you think of me as a child?” he spat, suddenly towering over you. “I treaded this world long before you were even thought into existence.”
“Oh – please do tell me more, you ancient… tree! ” you blurted out, nearly wincing at the weak insult you had just hurled at him.
He snorted. “Your flattery needs working as usual.”
You ignored his taunt. “A blood merchant? Seriously? ”
“She is not one!”
“Then what does she want with your blood?”
“She is doing some research. That is all you need to know,” he ground out between gritted teeth.
Before you could retort, a soft knock on the door was heard.
“Astarion? Ava is leaving,” Gale spoke.
He threw one final scowl at you before heading out.
“Judging from the murderous look on your face, I imagine the conversation wasn't all that pleasant, my friend.”
You clenched your fists tight, brushing past Gale to follow Astarion.
By the time you reached the ample room, you were met with Ava giving his shoulder a tight squeeze.
She gave you a final glare, that sickening smile of hers still dancing on her lips. “I'll be seeing you soon.”
Then she turned to leave as Astarion exchanged a tense look with you.
You felt a gentle hand on your arm and flinched.
Shadowheart.
“If it's of any comfort to you, I am also suspicious of her aura,” she said with a grimace. “Although I can't say I'm surprised he would surround himself with such company.”
Heaving a deep sigh, you sank on the nearby cushioned chair.
She lowered herself at your side, offering you an all-black vial.
You raised a brow. “What is this?”
As you had come to expect from Shadowheart, she gave you the warmest of smiles. “Lavander extract mixed in with some herbs. It is said to keep the worst terrors of the night at bay,” she said, giving your forearm a gentle squeeze. “The apothecary did mention it is only a temporary fix. You must address the root cause of these dreams, friend.”
Your eyes immediately landed on Astarion who was busy emptying the contents of the satchel Ava had brought him.
Shadowheart followed your line of sight and gave you a knowing nod. “The two of you speak but neither listens, and I care too much for you to watch your light dim for him.”
You swallowed hard.
She was right.
Of course she was.
You took the tiny vial in your hand. “Thank you, my friend.”
She nodded curtly. “I shall keep an eye on him lest he does something foolish to you.”
And you knew she meant every single word.
Tumblr media
How many times had you counted to twenty? You'd lost track of it already.
Maybe increasing it to thirty and repeating it many more times over would help you muster the courage to do this.
You kept on rasping your knuckles softly against the door to his room, but not soundly enough to provoke a knock.
It was becoming unbearable.
You felt as if something was constantly gnawing and clawing at you from the inside out.
“I can hear you breathing, you know.”
His voice startled you, your heart skipping a beat.
Taking a deep breath for added courage, you gripped and turned the doorknob, swiftly pushing the door open.
There he was.
Sitting by the windowsill, bathed in moonlight as he flipped through a book that lay pressed against his thigh.
He looked positively… ethereal.
The candles scattered across the room, made it feel more homely and inviting.
“Sneaking up on a rogue? My, my… feeling bold tonight, are we?”
Your heart faltered momentarily.
He didn't lift his head to meet you, and you were thankful for this.
You were having a hard time keeping yourself together. Beads of sweat pooled in the palms of your hands and you tried your best to keep your breathing as even as possible.
But this needed to happen.
And depending on the direction of this conversation, you might just leave his room feeling even more heartbroken than before.
“We need to talk.”
That caught his attention, and his crimson eyes met yours.
He arched an elegant brow, pressing the book shut. “Go on.”
Suddenly, you felt cold.
No… freezing .
As if the weight of his stare steadily drained the warmth from your body, even with your robe tightly wrapped around you.
You mustered all the willpower you possibly could.
“Why her?”
A crow's foot of amusement appeared by his left eye. “You'll have to be more specific, darling.”
You heaved a deep sigh of frustration, considering the idea of simply walking away.
Why was this so hard?
But a small sliver of determination kept your focus. “This arrangement you have with her… I…” You paused for a moment, struggling to find the right wording to this. “I just want to know why her.”
Why not me?
Astarion shifted to stand gracefully on his feet, leaving the book on the padded chair.
“Why not?”
Answering questions with more questions was a sure way to frustrate you, but he excelled at this dance.
“Please answer me…”
He took a few steps in your direction, his eyes studying your face as if trying to strip you bare.
“Because it's easier.”
“Than what?”
He didn't answer.
You waited for him to go on, but were far too impatient to hold back.
So, you tried again.“Is she the reason why you're so distant from me, then?”
He tilted his head. “And how did you arrive at that conclusion, I wonder?”
Another question for a question.
“You've been distant from me for a while now,” you said, trying to rub the sweat away from your hands. “And I can't help but think she's the reason why.”
He straightened ever so slightly before closing the distance between you two.
“What I have with her is merely transactional.”
Ah. Well…
You did know all too well of transactions with Astarion…
After all, you had been pushed into one from the moment you had gotten together with him at the Tiefling celebration, even if unbeknownst to you.
“Seduce you, sleep with you, manipulate your feelings so you'd never turn on me…”
His words of confession still echoed through your mind from time to time.
“Like what we have now?”
“It is nothing of the sort." he immediately said.
For better or worse?
“How so?”
His proximity had you suck in a sharp breath. “She's not you.”
A cold chill ran through your body.
“That is what you want to know, isn't it? Why I never asked that of you.”
Astarion could be too perceptive for your own good. It was as if he could easily read you like an open book.
You slowly nodded.
“Because you're – well… you're you ,” he said, his face softening. “And as selfish as I am, I could never burden you with this. Not you.”
His words carved into your chest like the sharpest daggers.
Even after all this time, he still regarded himself as a burden to others. That what he had been through had tainted him beyond repair.
But…
“Is that why you push me away?”
He was too close now.
Close enough to throw you off balance with his imposing demeanour.
“How can I not?”
That stung.
Hard.
“Have you any idea how much I envy those who have never met you?”
Your heart dropped.
And then dread took over.
“Or how I envy those who have yet to meet you?”
This had been exactly what you had feared coming into his room.
The confirmation that he was ready to move from you.
That all that was left of your bond with him was this arrangement and the empty shell of what used to be something that resembled a friendship.
Even after he had comforted you last night.
How much of that was truly genuine?
“Do you want to know why?” he asked.
Did you?
“... why?”
Then you felt his icy fingers on your cheek, jolting from the sudden shift in temperature. “Because they get to know you for the first time. They get to experience all of you,” he went on, brushing his thumb across your skin. “In another lifetime, we would have met without the manipulation and hurt and pain.”
You froze in place and your mind went blank.
“You would have met my unbroken self, and I would have adored you unconditionally, because how could I not when everything about you is so easy to love?”
Somehow, this made everything even worse.
Your stomach twisted in knots and you were left utterly speechless.
You had promised yourself not to shed more tears for him, but it was proving to be a challenge as his words seeped into your core like poison.
It was the painful realisation of what could have been.
“And even through all the deception and lies, you could never bring yourself to loathe me. Even when it was decidedly the wisest thing for you to do,” he said, voice steady and calm. “You never loathed me. Not then and not now – maybe not ever .”
Your lips quivered as he spoke every word of truth.
You then swallowed the thick lump in your throat and met his gaze. “You're not broken.”
But it was evident he didn't believe your words.
“And it is not fair that you get to make my decisions for me,” you said, pulling his hand away from your face. “You could have told me all of this, Astarion. We used to have sincere conversations before. What changed?”
He looked away, and you could feel the vulnerability creep into his features.
“Everything.”
You placed a hand to the side of his face, wanting him to meet your gaze once again.
He resisted at first, but eventually succumbed, soft eyes meeting yours.
“Do you regret not going through with the ritual?”
He winced under your touch as if you'd just burnt him.
“A few days ago… that conversation in the cell…”
Astarion didn't look willing to pursue this matter at all.
You inwardly cursed at yourself.
Fuck… you've pushed it.
“Do I wonder what it would be like? Yes – can you blame me for it? To live again without being reduced to a vampire spawn? To tread the lands freely and with so much power that no one would dare cross me?” He paused abruptly as if snapping out of a dream, eyes narrowing at you. “This Wish spell nonsense is dragging, and I feel my chances are slimming with each passing day. We take one step forward and two steps back.”
You felt for him. You truly did.
It seemed that the odds were ever against you, but you also had faith in Gale and your own abilities.
“We'll figure it out. I promise.”
He scoffed. “Do not make promises you can't keep.”
His face looked sour and it pained you.
“You're still the same man I…” fell for…
But you let the final words die in your mouth, not wanting to take it too far.
He stared expectantly at you and, in that moment, you were sure that feeling had never truly left.
You were still foolishly in love with him.
And the confirmation that it could be perhaps reciprocal to an extent was tugging at the frayed ends of your sanity.
“You could have anyone you desire,” he said, with a slight hint of pity in his voice. “From artisans to noblemen – they would all crawl for you.”
It was tempting to accept his praise, but it frustrated you that it felt like he was merely deflecting.
And the trace of pity truly gnawed at your nerves. Why did he pity you? For still having feelings for him?
You snorted. “Well, they're not you.”
Hurling his own words at him had him pressing his lips together.
“I don't know if I can give you anything real. I simply don't know how…”
You caressed his cool cheek. “We can start by rebuilding our friendship.”
He leaned into your touch. “I rather like the sound of that.”
You offered him a reassuring smile.
To be honest, you were more than perfectly fine with that prospect.
Even if a part of you craved more than a friendship, you were also aware that some wounds took longer to heal.
His wounds.
Your wounds.
And the ones you shared together.
So long as he didn't push you away with no solid reason, you would be fine.
And so would he.
Then you came to the conclusion that…
He didn't need her.
He didn't need Ava at all.
You were there for him.
There was no need for him to meddle with strangers when he had you as a friend.
“You don't need her.”
His eyes widened slightly. “What do you mean?”
“You don't have to resort to her for intimacy,” you said carefully, waiting for his approval. “I can help, if you so wish, of course.”
Much to your dismay, he scowled rather deeply.
“I have already stolen too much from you.”
You shook your head, gripping the lace near your collarbone, tugging gently. “You cannot steal that which is freely given.”
And you meant every word.
You then gripped the string of your robe. “May I remove this?”
He silently nodded.
As you undid it, the silk fabric began to slide down your arms, leaving you to stand only in your nightdress.
His eyes dropped from your face and roamed along your frame.
He took a few steps in your direction until he was standing close enough that you could feel the coldness of his skin.
“You don't have to do this.” he said.
You gave him a reassuring nod. “We can stop if you don't feel comfortable.”
His eyes found yours. “Can I look at you? Bare?”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Slowly, you unravelled the first lace at the front of your nightdress.
Suddenly, Astarion's hand gripped yours as you moved to the next one further down.
You took a deep breath, fearing you had overdone it.
That he would stop you.
Only… he didn't.
Instead, he picked the string in between his fingers, giving it a tug until it came undone.
His eyes never left yours and you felt shivers prickling at your skin, as he exposed more and more of your skin.
You felt another tug and the fabric loosened.
“I do wonder…”
Another one.
You bit down on your lower lip, holding his unwavering gaze.
And another one.
Your chest heaved more rapidly as your heart hammered in your ears.
This time, his eyes dropped as he worked on the last strings.
“... do friends do this?”
A chill ran down your back as it dawned on you that there was a contrast to this.
Just a few hours ago, he had been tying the very same laces to preserve your modesty in a moment of vulnerability.
But now, you had been the one to initiate it, and he had undone each of them until your front was fully open.
“It depends…” your voice was but a whisper.
He pushed the fabric aside just enough to expose a hardening nipple.
“On what?”
You couldn't bring yourself to provide a decent reply as you felt his thumb ghost the underside of your breast.
Then he flicked the sleeve from your shoulder, until it draped down your arm.
“Are we really just meant to be friends?”
Heat rushed to your face at his bluntness and you looked at him dazedly as if drunk on his words.
“Is that why I plague your dreams at night and your thoughts during the day?”
Astarion had a gift for words and he could almost make it seem like he could easily make love by using them, if he so desired.
Or completely make you crumble under the weight of his words.
You couldn't bring yourself to answer any of his questions, as you felt the burden of the truth weigh down on you.
“You are beautiful.”
His sincere praise almost drew a gasp from you.
You had the other sleeve sliding down as well, until the nightdress slipped along your body, pooling at your feet.
For the first time in what felt like forever, you were standing fully naked in front of him.
There was familiarity in it, but that wasn't what had your heart fluttering.
It was how he silently glared at you as if awestruck.
“So very beautiful…”
This time, his words of praise made you feel too self-aware and far more exposed than simply being naked.
Reflexively, you brought your hands to cover your bare chest.
You had always felt undeserving of his attention.
Astarion was what some might call the epitome of physical harmony.
His body was a work of art and his beauty unmatched.
“You don't ever have to hide from me,” he said softly, taking one hand in his. “Come here.”
He slowly guided you towards the window, the full moon up high casting its pale glow down on you.
“Look at the window.”
You did so, watching your lonely and washed out reflection show up on the clear glass.
Fleetingly, you wished you could see him, too, as he came to stand behind you, placing both hands on your shoulders.
But there was no one there but you.
You stood alone, but felt his presence all the same.
“You are a sight to behold,” he said in a whisper, his lips close to your ear. “Do not ever doubt it.”
“So are you…”
He chuckled, placing one finger under your chin, and tilting your head towards him.
You suddenly felt your knees buckle under you as his lips ghosted over yours.
“May I kiss you?”
Oh.
That startled you and your eyes widened. “Are you sure?”
His brows furrowed lightly. “We don't have to, of course.”
You wanted to.
More than anything.
But this wasn't just about you.
“Maybe we should take it slow?” you suggested, the coldness of his lips nearly touching yours.
He drew back slightly.
“Is that what you want?”
“Maybe it's what you need.”
He hesitated at first. “I think… I need this.”
Doubt flared inside you like a wildfire. On one hand, you feared he was rushing things once again.
On the other, he seemed rather at ease with the prospect of going further.
So maybe…
“You need to let me know if it's too much.”
He inched closer once more. “I will.”
Your heart clenched hard before rapidly doubling its pace.
You fully melted into him as he took your lips in his, keeping you still by gripping your chin lightly in between his fingers.
This kiss was familiar.
It was measured and controlled.
This one felt and tasted like… home.
It was reminiscent of the last kisses you had shared before Moonrise Towers. When both of you had gotten so comfortable with each other, it felt like second nature to be so intimate.
This wasn't driven by lust like the one you shared at The Blushing Mermaid only a few days prior.
It was driven by yearning.
Longing.
He pressed down on your chin with his thumb, parting your lips for his tongue to slip through, and your eyes quickly fluttered shut.
How you had missed this… tasting him as he completely overtook your senses.
His cold touch set your skin alight and you had to grip the hardwood shutter by the window to keep yourself from melting away.
You broke from him to let out a soft gasp when he pressed himself against you, his growing erection nudging at your lower back.
As touch starved as you were, you still held back, not wanting to overstep any lines.
He trailed his tongue along your lower lip, and you slowly turned to fully face him, cradling his face in your hands never parting from him.
The kiss morphed into something more urgent and primal, as if he had waited an eternity for this moment.
Your body was now fully flushed against him, and you heard the faintest growl emerge from his throat when you pressed into his bulge.
He suddenly broke the kiss, causing your eyes to fly open.
“Too much?”
“Yes.”
Astarion slowly tore himself away from you body, his face tense and his eyes avoiding yours.
For a split second you felt panic take over your mind at the fear of having hurt him.
“Astarion…”
But he quickly straightened himself, offering a reassuring smile.
It felt genuine and you allowed yourself to relax.
“Are you well?”
His face seemed blank for a moment. “Of course.”
Your heart dropped at the realisation that his words, once again, did not match his body language.
“Maybe we rushed it…”
As if your voice had snapped him out of a trance, his eyes finally met yours. “It's hard not to do so with you.”
The impending sense that he was trying to compensate with words began to loom over you.
He swiftly circled you and moved back to help you slip into your robe, careful fingers tying it snugly around you, yet you felt more exposed than ever.
“Astarion, I didn't mean for-”
He pressed his forefinger to your lips. “I was the one who got carried away. Do not take the blame for that. Please.”
You felt relief slowly settle deep within you.
Astarion's words did match his body language this time.
You then heaved a big sigh as he dropped his hand.
“Do you wish for me to stay? We can talk about it…”
He closed the space between the two of you and pressed a light kiss to your forehead. “Not tonight.”
You nodded understandingly, enjoying the tenderness.
“Will you still seek out Ava?”
He pulled away to meet your gaze. “I might indulge in some of her words of wisdom, yes.”
“And will you still give her your blood?”
“I believe so.”
You felt the beginnings of a frown settle on your face. “You don't have to…” … not anymore .
“You also don't have to give me yours, yet you willingly do so,” he said, arching an eyebrow. “As do I.”
“But it's different with us… I can easily withdraw my consent.”
“Correct.”
You hesitated for a moment. “I just worry that she might take it too far…”
A genuine smile of amusement tugged at his lips. “Ava is not someone you should worry about.”
Well, it was easier said than done.
There was still an unsettling feeling about her brewing within you. You couldn't quite place your finger on what it was, but it was still there…
“If she tries anything to hurt you-”
He immediately cut you off. “Oh, I am quite sure you would bestow upon her a curse so great that historians all over Faerûn would rush to document such an event in their books.”
Your outer shell of toughness cracked open and you chuckled.
“I would hope they do that.”
“A cautionary tale, if you will,” he nodded with a sly grin.
“And I will gladly do that to her should the situation call for it.”
It wasn't an empty threat.
He nodded. “I don't expect anything less from you, darling.”
You stared at each other in silence for what felt like an eternity.
It felt… comfortable.
Your heart felt full from finally having had a heartfelt conversation that was long overdue.
There were still edges to polish and fears to keep at bay, but, for now, it felt enough.
“Have a good night, Astarion.” you offered a sweet smile.
He returned it. “Dream of me – well, the satisfying kind, I hope.”
“So do I.”
“And if not, you know where to find me."
His words of comfort wrapped around you like the warmest blanket.
You nodded, snatching your nightdress from the floor to exit his room.
With a final glance over your shoulder, you found that his smile had wavered ever so slightly, and did your best not to overthink it.
And as the door to his room clicked shut, you shook your head and held it up high, determination setting in your mind.
You were going to talk to Ava.

If Zoltraak so OP, why doesn’t Frieren/Copyren use it to fight each other?: a silly tactics essay
Madhouse is absolutely killing it with their gorgeous fight scenes that also make more sense the more you dig into them. In this episode, it's the senior citizen fight scene, where Frieren busts out the scary spells for the first time after telling us that Zoltraak is fast, efficient, powerful, the best combat spell etc etc. So why don't they use it against each other? The answer is this 2-second scene:
Tumblr media
Let’s review what we’ve been told about Zoltraak. It’s “piercing magic that pierced through the defensive magic of humans and magic resistant equipment, and directly destroyed the body”. Zoltraak is generally good at destroying physical things.
In turn, the hexagonal shield magic—as Qual deduces—“synchronises with offensive magic and disperses the power”. But this costs lots of mana, and is weak against attacks of physical mass.
The rock-paper-scissors of modern magic is, then, Zoltraak-shield-physical mass.
Another note: it seems possible to cast both a shield and another offensive magic (maybe only Zoltraak?) at the same time, as in Frieren and Denken’s duel, and as with Methode vs golems.
Back to the Frierens.
Zoltraak is fast, efficient in mana usage, and powerful. It’s “enough for mages of the modern era”. Frieren and Fern usually spam this one spell; Copyren also uses it against Denken and co. So they would like to open with it.
Knowing that, they both bring up the hexagonal shield, ready to disperse Zoltraak. But, they both realize that Frieren’s Zoltraak cannot defeat Frieren’s hexagon shield. Edel states the two methods of getting past a shield: breaking it by force, or bypassing it with speed. Neither can get a single Zoltraak off strong enough that can shatter the corresponding shield, so they start shifting their aim, but they react just as fast to each other so there’s no openings.
Then what about multiple Zoltraaks? Presumably they could both keep the shields up while also casting Zoltraak, so they could turtle down into a battle of attrition and see who makes a minor inefficient mistake. But! Copyren is facing two mages, not one. It will definitely lose in a shield-whittling contest. Even if they had infinite mana, if they sit there playing chicken with the shields, Fern will eventually blast it from behind.
Additional hypothesis: the mana used to defend against an attack with a hexagon shield will always be greater than the mana used to make the attack. Therefore, a mage should aim to always be on the offensive. In Ehre vs Fern, Fern kept creating distance and refused to get pinned down; Ehre got pinned down and that’s why she lost. Both Frierens have a motive to use as little defensive magic and as much offensive magic as possible.
Sadly, it’s a pretty empty room, with not much physical mass to use against each other; Copyren in particular probably wants to avoid eating up the walls of Spiegel’s hideaway. So they need to cast offensive magic, that isn’t Zoltraak, and that doesn’t need existing physical mass.
Before Zoltraak leading to shield leading to mass attacks, it’s likely there wasn’t that much of a need for physical mass specifically. Edel says it takes more mana to conjure than it does to manipulate the environment. But if mass isn’t a requirement, then ye olde mages probably wouldn’t have focused on magics with the weakness of, say, needing a water source nearby (sorry Kanne). It makes sense that old-fashioned attacks were therefore magics that expressed some kind of energy without significant mass: fire, lightning, wind. (Ty @wtfoctagon for laying out this pre-Zoltraak idea!)
Simultaneously, this brings up an interesting question: what kind of defence were pre-Zoltraak (therefore pre-hexagon) mages using?
1. Some other [Defence Magic], but weaker
2. A Warrior
3. More offence!
Tumblr media
Forget this newfangled modern mass stuff. Frieren and Copyren go right back to Cast Fireball, the force of which can be dissipated and defended against with Cast Fireball.
Not using the hexagonal shield is actually a more mana-efficient defence. If Zoltraak’s out of the question, then there’s no real need to invest in the heavy anti-Zoltraak shield. And we have already seen a previous example of offence as defence: Fern vs Lugner.
Tumblr media
We also see one more example of this kind of old-fashioned mass-less attack in the other senior citizen brawl, where Denken uses Waldgose (tornado) + Daosdorg (fire). It eats up enough mana that even Denken is tapped out by the end. Of course, for Frieren vs Denken, she has so much more mana that there’s no problem spending it on a full-body shield. But if she did the same versus her clone, she would rapidly start losing the attrition battle. So she has to defend with a less costly though much messier method.
One more advantage of non-mass elemental magic: for Copyren, using Hellfire magic is much more of an area-of-effect spell, which might be able to touch Fern as well. For Frieren, it’s a no-brainer to go along with splashing mana everywhere, to help hide Fern’s presence.
Of course, that’s not to say that they won’t take advantage of mass when it exists. The use of Hellfire to make lava out of the falling pillar/wall is a delicious and nutritious anime original addition, and it also makes so much sense.
tl;dr: the Frierens tested and discarded the possibility of a modern-style Zoltraak fight in as much time as it takes us to say "holy shit".
all this of course brings up the question:
If Frieren so OP against Zoltraak, why can Fern use Zoltraak?
because Fern’s OP OP Zoltraak go brrrrr

Cale be like: "Let's just buy the Magic Tower" – everyone else: *shocked Pikachu face*
I don't think enough people appreciate what utterly crazy, audacious, outside-the-box thinking Cale displayed back when he decided on that move.
People overlook it, because Cale does a lot of other crazy, audacious things, both before and after the Magic Tower. But in my opinion, this one was one the smartest and craziest.
From a reader's POV, it might not seem that crazy. Cale naturally presents the ruined Magic Tower as a perfect oppurtunity from TBOAH: it's described to contain a ton of treasures, some of which were found by Toonka and the Anti-Magic Faction, and some of which were lost. It only makes sense that he'd want to loot it and take the treasures.
However, that's not all what Cale did, no no no. Cale didn't just break into the Magic Tower and loot stuff. He actually, legally, bought the whole place, including the land it was standing on. And it was a genius move which changed the course of the entire war in the future.
Let's break it all down, shall we?
First of all, he made a deal with Alberu. Cale used the Crown Prince's money to buy the Magic Tower, and he did it nearly without a warning, which might have pissed him off... However, Cale wanted to make the Roan Kingdom stronger, so he gave Alberu the device belonging to the Liege of the Magic Faction, which would allow him to contact all the magical refugees from the Whipper Kingdom. Basically, Cale paid Alberu back in full – because the Roan Kingdom desperately needed magic users to strengthen their military.
Secondly, Cale created an alliance with Toonka, and thus the entire Whipper Kingdom. This alliance let Cale have influence when they later went to the war against the Empire. Without Toonka being on board, Cale wouldn't have been able to manipulate the battles against Adin the way he did. Against all odds, Toonka actually became one of this most useful allies later on.
Thirdly, by involving himself with the Whipper Kingdom, Cale actually saved it in the long run. Through Cale, Whipper was able to enter the alliance with the other countries who stood against the Empire and Arm. For example, the Jungle helped provide food to the Whipper Kindom – which in TBOAH, they had to steal from the Jungle in order to survive, leading to a conflict between the two. Instead of enemies, Toonka and Litana became allies.
Next, thanks to Cale being the one who proposed bringing back the Whipper Kingdom mages for reinforcements as mercenaries, during the war against the Empire, Cale helped out with lessening the hatred against magic among the citizens. Basically, by creating this debt of gratitude, the Whipper Kingdom won't be discriminating as badly against mages in the future. That's a huge deal.
Also, by becoming the owner of the Magic Tower, Cale had power over the documents containing the studies concerning magic resistance. The Whipper Kingdom wouldn't have used the information benevolently on their own, that's for sure; there was still too much hatred towards magic at the time. By limiting their access to the information, Cale actually helped them as well.
And finally, by giving the Anti-Magic Faction money from purchasing the Magic Tower, Cale literally bought time. He actually delayed the main conflict on the continent – because, as I mentioned already, the Whipper Kingdom was going to face financial problems due to food shortage, which would have resulted in them going after the Jungle (and Elisneh would have fanned the flames by controling Litana's people with illusions, too). He gave the Roan Kingdom more time to prepare for the war, and Toonka went after the Empire instead, gathering their attention and pulling it away from Cale's country. What feels natural progression for the readers was actually a huge divergence from what happened in TBOAH.
It might have seemed like a simple move at the time in the novel, based entirely on Cale's scammer's way of thinking and greed for money. But it was so much more than that. It was a very calculated, extremely bold move, which Cale came up entirely on his own.
...You think it was obvious to anyone in that world that you could simply buy a building such as the Magic Tower? That it was even an option? Not a chance!!!
It was essentially the fortress belonging to the true rulers of Whipper Kingdom. It was like a royal castle. Who in their right mind comes up with buying the castle of the rulers of a foreign country, right after a major revolution?? Such places are normally never for sale! The only reason it worked in the first place was because Toonka was so crazy he couldn't care less about it! It would have never worked if the Anti-Magic faction hated the magic users any less than they did!!
What Cale did was utterly ingenious. He doesn't get enough credit for such a ballsy move.

Adventure: Grasping for Answers
Throughout their early adventures the party come into conflict with the agents of the mysterious mage known only as "The Ravelling Hand", a villain of uncertain identity who seems to have lots of schemes and no qualms using violence, trickery, and unexpected magic to get what they want.
Adventure Hooks:
The party first become entangled with the hand's minions when they're asked by an innocuous travelling merchant to deliver a small wrapped parcel to the wizard living one town over. The wizard isn't open to receiving guests, and after sneaking or charming their way in, the party will find out why: her apprentice has been kidnapped, the parcel contains both of the boy's index fingers as well as a note explaining that she can have the rest of him back in exchange for several dangerous texts in her collection, delivered by the party to the same intermediary who hired them. A brawl is likely to ensue as the wizard suspects the party is in on the blackmail, but if they can talk her down maybe they can figure out a way to work together to get the boy back before any more harm comes to him.
Most thieves know better than to try and rob a magic item shop, but most thieves aren't armed with dispel magic infused salt grenades to neutralize the shop's ubiquitous defences. A rash of these attacks across the duchy has shopkeepers worried, and one hires the party to stake out their store for the night when they suspect someone is casing it. Do the party trail the robbers back to their hideout, or interrupt them mid heist only for combat to delay them long enough for those indiscriminate defences to start turning back on?
Spoiler Alert: The mage is in fact an arcanely gifted lesser kraken by the name of Dlexx who seeks to avail itself of all the magical knowledge amassed on land. Sure the deep has its own mysteries but there's a thriving trade in spellscrolls and arcane tomes that don't make it below the waves. Using an old lighthouse as a disguise for its massive form while on land, it uses telepathy and sendings to direct its minions without ever revealing its true nature. Imagine the party's surprise when they roll up to the villain's lair expecting to bully some crusty nerd with a ratty beard and instead the lair sprouts tentacles that drag them into the crashing surf.
Challenges & Consequences
Finding Dlexx is an adventure in and of itself. When questioned, most of the mage's minions admit to never having met their employer, and those high ranking enough to have been summoned to a place called "saltbite tower" in dreams only to later have their memories muddled. Careful interrogation and study of local maps will have the party realize that the tower is infact an abandoned lighthouse, which will narrow their search as they comb the costline for their enemy's lair.
Actually defeating the Ravelling Hand might prove too much for early level adventurers, as in addition to being a powerful mage the kraken is literally in its element, able to breathe and move while the heroes flounder. Dlexx will toy with them, throwing unconscious foes out of the water the way a fisherman throws back a catch that is too small. When the battle is over and it's proved it's point the kraken will collapse the tower and leave into the wide ocean, telepathically taunting them with their inability to follow.
Though the Ravelling Hand will not resurface for some time, the destruction of the tower and Dlexx's retreat into the deep is partially a bluff. The kraken chose that particular lighthouse because it was a short distance away from the coral reef into which it scribed its arcane learning the way a wizard records spells in a book, coiling arms etching formulae into hundreds of yards of living stone. Dlexx must periodically return to the reef to add spells to it, and sightings by locals (or the occasional fish manifesting with magical talent) might clue the party into the reef's existence.
A pair of merfolk siblings named Crashing-Tide and Arcing-Mirror serve the Ravelling Hand as apprentices and scribes, having promised seven years of utmost loyalty in exchange for the chance to bring the arcane knowledge of the surface back to their community. They tend to the reef, and allow the Kraken to borrow their eyes from afar so that it might study the spells scribed there. Several years into their pledge, Crash (the sister) has come to idolize Dlexx and the power it wields above and below the waves, wishing that the whole of their shoal to come into its service. Mirror (the brother) is skeptical, well aware of the kraken's manipulations and distantly suspicious of the conflict that it invokes. Perhaps if the party can intercede with these two they can learn more about their enemy's plans, though doing so will take some careful diplomacy.

Neopets Lore (and Theory) - Faerie Aging and Faerie Populations
Here's another fun poking-at-the-Neopets-canon post about faerie aging and population numbers (this is a long'un, so to be nice I'll put a Keep Reading break in to make it easier to scroll past in the #neopets tag. ;))
1. Faeries are very long-lived, and don’t seem to grow old. In Fyora’s and Illusen’s Neopedia articles, their ages are listed as “Ageless.” (Jhudora’s age, for the record, is listed as “She’s certainly not telling.”)
Tumblr media
"Go on. Ask. See what happens."
Neopets, in contrast to faeries, have been described as mortal (such as in the Altadorian Book of Ages—“Siyana, the First to Rise, blessed [the city's] mortal heroes with the gift of great longevity”—plus I’m pretty sure Jhudora calls you a pitiful mortal or something like that as one of her quest-completion messages), which implies that faeries are immortal—that they don’t die of old age. (They do seem to be able to die of other causes; there’s at least one faerie ghost out there—Valeane, from the “Aethia and the Battle Faerie” Neopedia article.)
2. Faeries appear to, at minimum, go through a “teenager” phase during which at least some of them attend a school called the Faerieland Academy, though what that actually involves, age-wise, seems to be ambiguous—in the Neopedia article for Kaia, whose backstory involves leaving her homeland of Shenkuu to attend the Faerieland Academy, her age is simply listed as “Younger than most of her kind.”
Tumblr media
"I'm [ambiguous] years old!"
It’s not known whether Kaia is literally a teenager when she goes to the Academy, or if faeries age differently—it’s possible, as long-lived beings, that they age more slowly and reach the faerie equivalent of adolescence at a much older age than Neopets (or humans); likewise, it’s possible that faeries are “born”/created from magic and never go through a baby/young child stage, jumping straight from nonexistence to the equivalent of teen-hood. (I don't believe an infant or toddler-stage faerie has ever shown up in canon.)
3. The ongoing existence of the Faerieland Academy implies that faeries are being born/created at a fairly steady rate—there’d be no need for a school for young faeries if there weren’t an ongoing stream of faerie youths to be schooled.
(It’s not impossible that Neopets might attend the Faerieland Academy as well—there’s an old TCG card that references a “Faerieland Magic Academy” that Neopet would-be mages could attend. However, this may not be the same as the Faerieland Academy that Kaia and other faeries go to, and Kaia’s article doesn’t mention her interacting with other Neopets as students—only faeries.)
Tumblr media
"And all of those faeries are jerks!"
4. It’s not clear how faeries are born/created.
At least one faerie mentions her mother—in the “Aethia and the Battle Faerie” Neopedia article, Aethia introduces herself as “student of Shyvara, daughter of Dreeana.” There is also an item called “Illusen’s Family Recipe Cake,” which means that Illusen presumably has a family that passed down the recipe for that cake.
However, it’s never clearly stated whether these familial relationships come about through birth or adoption. It’s possible that faeries reproduce through parthenogenesis, or--given that they're magical creatures--just use some sort of spell to conjure up children out of thin air. It’s also possible that faeries simply pop up spontaneously from Neopia’s natural magic (or something like that) and are then adopted by an adult faerie, though that option raises an obvious question—what happens if a young faerie pops into existence somewhere remote, without any faeries or Neopets nearby?
(The worst option, of course, is for faeries to be like ants or honeybees, in which the Queen is responsible for producing all the eggs necessary to keep the colony going. I would not wish that on Queen Fyora--it seems like an awful lot of work, and ruling a city-state seems hard enough on its own.) (Though there's a part of me that's strangely amused by the idea of faeries being insect-like enough to have a grub-like larval stage.)
Tumblr media
"Why would you even suggest that."
5. However it is more faeries enter Neopia, here we run into a problem—that is, population.
If faeries don’t die of old age, and more faeries keep being born/created… eventually you’re going to start seeing overcrowding.
This presents a few possibilities:
a) Faeries do actually die of old age; it’s just that none of them have hit that age yet.
If Dr. Sloth's Neopedia article is to be believed, Neopia as we know it came into existence around 2,000 years ago—prior to that, Neopia was a wasteland without Neopets or faeries, until one day the world spontaneously became covered with greenery and Neopets popped into existence (much to Dr. Sloth’s dismay—he’d liked having a nice wasteland to fill with cool mutants!). It’s possible that faeries do have a maximum lifespan, but it’s simply higher than the number of years faeries have existed as a species. After a certain point, therefore, the faerie population could then stabilize.
b) Faeries do actually die of old age, and some have already done so, but faeries don’t like to talk about it—and might even deliberately hide their mortality from Neopets.
We know that Fyora has been Queen for at least 1,000 years (since she was the one to seal away the Darkest Faerie 1,000 years ago), so faerie lifespans would have to be at least 1,000-plus-however-old-Fyora-was-when-she-became-Queen, but (again, assuming the Dr. Sloth article is accurate) less than 2,000-and-change.
(As a side note, it’s implied that Fyora wasn’t the first Faerie Queen; according to the description of the (on-site item) book A New Day, Fyora was once an “up-and-coming faerie princess,” which raises the question of what might have happened to the previous Queen—untimely death, abdication, or something else?).
c) Faeries don’t die of old age, but after a certain point they leave Neopia in some manner.
Perhaps they abandon their physical forms and ascend to a higher plane of existence, or merge back with the natural magic of Neopia, or something… which seems a lot like death, actually, depending on one’s spiritual beliefs. Or maybe faeries have a retirement home on a planet next door (though that really just kicks the overpopulation can down the road).
d) Faeries don’t die of old age, don’t disappear from Neopia, and are, at some point, going to have to grapple with the whole overpopulation issue.
Digging too deeply into that train of thought could get a bit more dystopian than I’d necessarily like from a petsite, but hey, there it is.
Tumblr media
"What a depressing topic..."
6. Leaving aside future concerns about faerie overpopulation—how many faeries are there, anyways?
There isn’t a solid answer for the whole of Neopia, but the Neopedia does give a few specific numbers that could be used.
The “A Dark Faerie” and “A Light Faerie” articles both have estimated populations for dark and light faeries—25,000 for dark faeries, and 33,000 for light faeries.
If we were to take those numbers and extrapolate them for the other elements—the mean of those two numbers is 29,000, so for this exercise we’ll assume that’s a reasonable average for each element—we’d get around 174,000 faeries in Neopia.
However, that is definitely not the total population, because there’s another source of faerie population data: the Neopedia article for Faerieland.
According to that Neopedia article, the total population of Faerieland is 1,620,000, 80% of which is composed of faeries. 80% of 1,620,000 is 1,296,000 total faeries—and that’s just in Faerieland; there are also faeries living outside of Faerieland (though the ratio of non-Faerieland faeries to Faerieland faeries is unknown).
Still, this leaves us with a few options:
a) Normal option: Whoever wrote the Faerieland Neopedia article simply didn’t use the numbers from the “A Dark Faerie” and “A Light Faerie” articles (which is fair enough; it’s not like those population numbers were a vital part of Neopets lore that would cause issues if retconned) Besides, other aspects of those articles are a bit outdated anyways--the dark faerie article straight-up says that dark faeries are evil (vs. the current canon that they can be good or evil, like any other faerie).
b) Hilarious option #1: The population numbers in the “A Dark Faerie” and “A Light Faerie” articles were accurate to the state of Neopia at the time the articles went live, but the faerie population has exploded exponentially in the years between those articles and the Faerieland article. How or why this could have happened is anyone’s guess, but now faeries have a massive Baby Boom generation.
c) Hilarious option #2: The population numbers in “A Dark Faerie” and “A Light Faerie” are accurate; dark and light faeries are extremely outnumbered by faeries of every other element.
If we were to assume that literally every dark and light faerie lives in Faerieland (demonstrably not the case, but let’s roll with it for now), then that’s a total of 1,238,000 faeries who are neither dark nor light vs. 58,000 total who are. Assuming a relatively-even population distribution between earth, air, fire, and water (though you could argue that there’d be a lower ratio of water faeries, as given that they have mermaid tails instead of legs they’d likely prefer to live in… well… the water), then that’s around 309,500 faeries of each of the non light/dark elements, which would mean there were a little over 9 faeries of any other of the “main” elements for every light faerie, a little over 12 faeries of any of the other “main” elements for every dark faerie, and, grouping the dark/light and earth/air/fire/water elements together, a little over 21 non-dark/light faeries for every dark/light faerie.
But again—that’s only using Faerieland numbers. The numbers from the “A Dark Faerie” and “A Light Faerie” articles appear to be for all Neopia, so the ratios would be even more lopsided as long as there are significant populations of faeries outside of Faerieland (which is surely the case; I don’t think Balthazar is walking right into to Faerieland and bottling faeries in the streets).
Tumblr media
"Personally, I think we could use a few more of us around... but at least dark faeries are in the same boat."
But really, this one can probably be chalked up to those two older articles having relatively-arbitrary numbers slapped on them years before the Faerieland article was written and someone having to ask themselves "hey, Faerieland seems like a pretty big city... what's a reasonable population?"

So, I been curious and I wonder if you have answers; how strong is Idia? I know physically that a new born kitten could woop him, while technology wise not even the master control could stand against him, but what about magic wise? And where does he stand in comparison to the other dorm heads? I know in ch 6 he was strong as heck but isn't that mainly because he was getting energy from the blots?
(Thank you for your time)
Tumblr media
Mmm, well... I don't think "magic strength" alone accounts for how good of a mage someone is. You could have all the power in the world but could be a terrible mage just because of how you use it (like if you lack control), or perhaps because you can only cast a few powerful spells before you blow through your energy reserves. All spells are also not made equal; there are defensive spells, offensive spells, healing spells, and more! Because of all that, it's hard for us to really quantify how "strong" a mage is, because really each mage seems to specialize in their own skillsets. It's not "which class is the strongest?" but rather "which class fits your preferred play style?" For this reason, I'm not going to be formally ranking the dorm leaders but instead will point out their strengths and weaknesses.
As Idia points out in book 6:
Riddle has an artificially large magic pool because he started his magical training from a young age. He is capable of casting strong spells and favors offense, but also has low physical stamina and tires easily (from blot accumulation) because he tries to brute-force. His mental state is also said to be heavily impacted by external factors.
Leona can cast spells quickly and effortlessly; his magic pool is described to be "huge", but we don't know how this really relates to the other problem children in terms of scale. He also seems to boast precision, as he can "tailor" his defensive spells' strength to counter his opponents. Because of how efficient Leona is, he barely accumulates unnecessary blot. Stress does not have much effect on how fast he produces blot, but intense emotions do cause a significant spike in him. Additionally, Leona is skilled in flight due to playing magift/spelldrive.
Azul is a relatively slow spellcaster but makes up for that with precision and access to a variety of spells. He watches the flow of a battle, keeps cool, and then plays support/heals as needed. Idia also notes that while Azul can cast many different spells, Azul also does not have a large enough magic pool to support them and so has to be more careful about what and when he uses his magic.
Vil is very stable across the board and is quite resilient to blot. Stress does not have a huge effect on him, but the blot does seem to stick around for longer because of his larger magic pool. Something else to keep in mind is that Vil excels in making potions, which is another form of magic.
Please keep in mind that these refer to mainly COMBAT scenarios, which are not the only cases in which you would use magic... so this isn't an entirely accurate assessment; it's just the most convenient assessment since the game blatantly lays the comparisons out for us. Let's now piece together what we know of the remaining dorm leaders based on lore we have:
Kalim does not strike me as someone who has a particularly large pool of magic (it's never commented on, nor shown). I'd place him at around normal until otherwise refuted by the canon. We know he's not particularly proficient in his studies, as he just barely scrapes by in classes with intense help from Jamil. This may not always translate to poor performance in practical settings, but we also have no standout moments of Kalim pulling off impressive spells or being a notable mage. He also doesn't seem to be aware of the practical or strategic uses for his own UM unless others in his immediate vicinity are in need of large amounts of water. It's possible that he's incredibly powerful, but lacks awareness of how to best utilize his magic.
Malleus is stated in the lore to be one of the top 5 mages in the WORLD. He uses magic on a daily basis and barely blinks an eye to when he does amazing feats like STOPPING TIME ITSELF. Book 7 also reveals to us a hypothesis that fae might have access to an essentially limitless reserve of magic because they pull that magic from nature itself. I'd say that this definitively places Malleus at the top of the "magical power" hierarchy--there was never any doubt about that, the problem just comes in trying to sort everyone else under him.
And then there's Idia, whom we don't really see performing magic much by himself. No, he prefers to tinker with his computer parts which, technically, can count as magic since technomancy is the combination of technology and magic. (Does Ortho count as something resulting from Idia's "magic power"??) It's hard to say.
If I had to guess, I would think Idia is another stable user like Vil but is also highly volatile like Riddle (due to his guilt and grief being the main source of trauma). Idia HAS to cast spells or input magic into his devices because of his curse; if he does not accumulate blot, there's nothing for his curse to dine on... so it'll dine on his own magic instead, which can be detrimental to his health and wellbeing. (This is why the Shrouds are perfect candidates to work at STYX and research blot. All the blot present in STYX HQ fuels them and feeds their curses.) This implies Idia has to have output, and consistent output at that. More blot present in the immediate area may be able to power him up more and allow him to cast more spells/cast spells more frequently, but that's again highly dependent on his environment. Idia has the "flexibility" that the other dorm leaders lack, which can be a curse or a blessing given the scenario. Make of that what you will!

HIII can i request some overblots react to their s/o fight with clones like in frieren after the end ????? And after their s/o wins the battle so passed out and the overblots have to take care its injury
Oh, like Land's ability, right? Though, his ability is pretty similar to Cater's...
Also, I'm going with the assumption that the reader isn't actually fighting the boys in this. You're just getting into a random fight.
Overblotters with an s/o that can use clone magic
Riddle:
-During the fight, Riddle does his best to help you, even though he's not the best at it. He's been around Cater for long enough that the clones don't faze him, but he stresses himself out trying to protect all of them since he's not sure which one is the real you. After the fight, Riddle turns to scold you for getting involved, only to see you faint. He immediately starts shrieking for help as he drags you to the infirmary.
-He blames himself for not actually being able to keep you safe as he tends to your injured body. If he was a stronger mage, then this wouldn't have happened. As he carefully reapplies your bandages, Riddle becomes determined to further improve himself, both as a mage and a partner, so that you won't have to suffer for his failures again.
Leona:
-Leona isn't actually all that worried about you during the fight. He assumes that you're more than capable of keeping yourself safe, so he focuses on ending the fight as soon as possible. He grumbles as he turns his gaze towards you, and the last thing you hear is him yell your name as you collapse.
-Once you wake up, Leona refuses to leave your side. His gaze is intense, and he mutters that you should leave all the fighting to him if you're going to lose, even with your advantage. Despite the fussing, his hand is gentle as he slowly strokes your skin, his brow furrowed. In his mind, he's berating himself for not being good enough to keep you safe.
Azul:
-Azul isn't the best in a brawl, but he's doing his best, even though he's wishing that he still had his tentacles. He's very concerned about you, even though he can see your clones throwing punches. And in the end, his worst fears are confirmed when he finds you passed out.
-He fusses over you like a worried mother as you recuperate, constantly fluffing your pillows and shooing the twins out of the room so you can rest. However, all he can think about is that he truly is a worthless octopus. If he was better, then he could have saved you. Instead, the only thing he can do is think up ways to hasten your recovery. Because the sooner you're back on your feet, the sooner he'll stop feeling like he doesn't deserve you.
Jamil:
-Jamil is well-trained, and he knows how to protect someone in a fight. However, he runs himself ragged trying to protect all of your clones. He doesn't know where the real you is, until you crumple to the ground. Jamil curses under his breath, and he scoops you up into his arms before rushing back to Scarabia.
-He's also the type of guy who scolds you for being so reckless. Really, he's just mad at himself for letting you get hurt. Jamil clicks his tongue in annoyance as he checks on your injuries, muttering about teaching the idiots who hurt you a lesson. In the end, he's an excellent caretaker, and you make a swift recovery.
Vil:
-He hates having to get his hands dirty, but Vil doesn't mind "disciplining" a rowdy group of students, especially if you're involved. Vil takes your opponents down with swift, elegant kicks and punches, and the two of you quickly take them down. Unfortunately, you end up crashing into Vil as your vision blurs, and you faint in his arms.
-You love Vil, but you wish he'd stop shoving foul potions down your throat. All of his concoctions are helping you heal, but that doesn't help the taste. He also keeps lecturing you, all with a disapproving frown on his face. However, once the bottles of medicine are empty and he's finished talking, he'll press a gentle kiss to your forehead, and he'll quietly beg you to not scare him like that again.
Idia:
-Idia's panicking, yelping for Ortho's help while he tries to avoid getting punched. Later, he'll be amazed at your clones, but right now he's trying to survive. Eventually, Ortho comes to the rescue, and the two of you win the battle. As Idia makes his way over to you, you faint, and he begins to panic all over again.
-You're kept on house arrest in his room until you finish recovering, but it's not terrible. Idia keeps you entertained, and Ortho is an excellent helper. However, Idia's brain keeps churning out miserable thoughts. He feels useless, and he worries about your injuries. As you rest, he slowly lays his head down near your shoulder, just shy of touching you. He watches you sleep, silently wishing for you to get better soon. Maybe then, he won't feel like a failure.
Malleus:
-A fight like this is mere child's play to Malleus. Of course, most of your opponents flee the moment he comes close to them. Malleus is fascinated by your clones, and it's his curiosity that makes him fail to realize that you've been injured. When you fall into his embrace, you catch a brief glimpse of gathering storm clouds as your eyes flutter shut.
-You recover quickly, thanks to Malleus' magical prowess. He spends almost all of his time protectively curled around you, murmuring apologies for what happened. Malleus seems to be fine, but it hasn't stopped raining since you got hurt. Internally, his thoughts are spiraling. For a brief moment, he thought he'd lost you. You've brought joy to his lonely world, and the thought of you dying terrifies him. As you drift off to sleep in his arms, you hear him whisper that he'll never allow anyone to harm you again.

There’s an old article I’m hoping to read. Do you know if there’s any way to access ‘Metadwarfosis’ by Matt Cavota?
Metadwarfosis
Posted in Feature on November 23, 2005
By Matt Cavotta
Matt has worn many wizard hats in the 18 years he has worked on Magic—art-mage, logomancer, lightning bard, and (of course) Planeswalker.
### The Metadwarfosis
Ale-sodden Sing-alongs. There should be no explanation necessary here. One thing that is not cool is the cheesy stereotypical drunken dwarf crooning in a crude Irish-esque accent. If we “axe” this, we are swiftly on the road to cooler dwarves.
All Axes, All the Time. What's the deal with dwarves and axes? Why would a race that lives under rock ever develop an affinity for a tree-cutting weapon? Why would a weapon that must be swung wide to be effective be favored by a race that dwells in the tight confines of hewn tunnels? Why, scrapping all actual logic, would a race of any kind always reach for the same sort of weapon no matter what foe they engage? It's called shortsighted Gimli-filching. Sure, he likes his axe, but do ALL dwarves have to copy him. Rumpor Bristlebeard uses a short spear (gasp!), because he can easily skewer foes invading his home tunnel. Our dwarves are cooler already.
These Dwarves are Made for Diggin'. Why would a race that burrows underground have little natural tools for doing so. Other than the fact that they're short, dwarves have no adaptations to their own environment. OK, they can see in the dark too, but their squinty little eyes don't look anything like the eyes of an underground dweller. Our new dwarves will have larger, more light-absorbing eyeballs. Also, why don't dwarves have any natural digging capability? They're basically just short, fat humans. Let's give them slightly longer arms for reaching, and big strong hands with thick sharp fingernails for digging (in case a pick or shovel is not handy.)
Up the Obsession! Let's amp up the red in these folks. Bump up their love of precious metals to all-out obsession. They could be like little twisted underdweller crows, each out to one-up the other with a bigger pile o' loot.
To Beard or Not to Beard. That is the question. I say “not to beard.” A race that defines itself and bases its pride upon its facial hair seems really trite and thin. “Don't mess with the beard!” “Are you insulting my beard?!” “All great heroes have beards!” “Beards, beards, beards!” That sounds really lame to me. It's especially lame because other races have beards too. Let's make it so our dwarves are proud of their reckless abandon in battle and of the number of foes they have pinned to the end of their [insert sword, spear, dagger, or any other weapon that is not an axe.] Oh, and of their pile o' loot too!
Cry Anarchy! Our dwarves will also be more essentially red. They will not help each other out all the time and “stick together through thick and thin.” Leave that stuff for sappy humans. Our guys are bloodthirsty little warmongers. They are a twisted by their fiery obsession, each out to spill more blood than the next guy. Now we're seeing red!
These Dwarves are Made for Diggin' v.2. I am also confused about why dwarves are so thick and heavy. It's probably just to make them the obvious opposite of thin and graceful elves. Rubbish. They live in tunnels, they should be adapted to that life. Instead of being so broad, our dwarves will be a little more wiry. Strong and hearty, but wiry. This makes it easier for them to navigate the budding mine shafts and tunnels that they burrow out. In addition to actually being short, they naturally walk with a bit of a hunch- nobody likes to hit his head all the time. These dwarves are already more believable. This is
By Clangeddin, we've created a goblin! Could this be why all the small red ground creatures of recent memory are goblins? I doubt it, but it is good for a little chuckle and a brief moment of contemplation on how dwarves and goblins represent what is red about red weenie creatures.
If I had my way, we probably would see dwarves in Magic, but they'd mostly be white, and there would be time and attention paid to reframing them as a race of sometimes bald-faced folk who sometimes might not live underground and often use weapons other than axes and who speak their own nothing-like-irish language. They would be a proud people, spiritual and devoted, wise and ancient. My dwarves would have cool cultural characteristics other than their stature, hairyness, and level of inebriation.
[The survey originally included in this article has been removed.]
Until that happens I, for one, am not all that sad that old-school dwarves have been off the scene for a while. I'd rather have them in the deep of their mines, combing their beards and sharpening their axes- waiting, waiting to see the light and emerge as something less slave to the ways of old folklore and new Hollywood mythology. I will happily wait for a true Magic dwarf.

Fantasy short story anthology time!
My new book, The Gorgon Incident and Other Stories: A Mage Errant Anthology, is out now on Amazon and Audible!
I absolutely love writing short stories. They push me as an author in ways that novels don't, and each one presents me with a unique, fascinating challenge. And, with this anthology, they allow me to explore parts of Anastis, the world of Mage Errant, in ways I couldn't in the main series. I get to travel to out-of-the-way corners, visit ordinary people to see how they get by in a world of giant monsters and ruthless archmages battling for control of petty territories, to explore secret conspiracies and legendary historical figures, and to flesh out Anastis' ecology, culture, and history.
If you haven't read Mage Errant yet, the first three ebooks are free for the next few days, and books four through six are on sale for $0.99 in the US and UK! Mage Errant is a completed, seven book magic school progression fantasy series, following the adventures of Hugh of Emblin as he goes from being a shy, neurodiversefailure of a student mage who struggles with anxiety and depression to being a shy, neurodiverse terrifying archmage who struggles with anxiety, depression, giant monsters, and magical superweapons. It features found family, giant monsters, a science-inspired hard magic system where you're as liable to run into hair or bismuth mages as fire mages, giant monsters, lots of queer characters, giant monsters (some of whom are also queer characters), kaijucratic systems of government, and sapient living cities. (Did I mention the giant monsters?)
The stories in the Gorgon Incident are written to be legible even to people who haven't read Mage Errant yet- though I think most people will get more out of them after reading the main series. The twenty-four stories, all originally published on my Patreon, span five centuries of history, from the last years of the Ithonian Empire up to the events of the series itself, even visiting another of Anastis' continents for the first time.
I also leaned hard into the science-inspired aspects of the setting with many of the stories, building what I like to call science puzzle stories, where the plot of the story revolves around the real-life behavior of various materials and natural processes, through a magical lens. (I had a lot of fun doing it, and it even let me include a whole additional appendix filled with notes on the science of the short stories- I love appendices.)

(Art by Aaron McConnell and Lee Moyer.)
A fugitive child finds shelter with a monster of legend. A mind-blind scholar outwits the mages who disdain him. A gold mage must secure a bank vault from a monster capable of obliterating entire cities. An aging basketweaver wakes up one morning to find a brand new river in front of her house. A palace-sized octopus seeks to defend his city from a living fortress of bone— if he can get his arms to cooperate.
In these twenty-four short stories set in the world of Mage Errant, John Bierce explores the murky depths of history, forgotten corners of Ithos and beyond, and the strangest reaches of magic itself.

staying on anon specifically to say this silly dumb joke:
Jailor Anon here,
You are SO right. That's exactly the word for this season tbh, "insensitive".
And it's so disappointing largely because they showed us in season 1 that they HAVE the willingness to talk about this (even though it was heavy handed in season 1 as well, tbh, with Vi's comments and Ekko's comments compounding to basically just stating it to Caitlyn's face in bold letters and neon signs) but this is on a whole 'nother level.
They want to end it on a ""sad but hopeful"" note but?? like WHAT hope? Where is the hope!!!
Is Sevika alone at the Council against 7 bigoted Topsiders supposed to be the hope?
They actively made sure to show us one of the Council women giving her the stink eye too, like what? (And people excusing it as "oh that's realistic" is like? Oh sure, we're going to keep THAT ""realism"" after showing me goddamn mages and ressurected werewolf mutants and magic crystals and fucking Eldrtich Time Traveling Mosses and?! We're not gonna abolish the Council itself? Not going to let Zaun become its own sovereign nation? No no, THIS is what we keep ""realistic""" give me a breeaaaaak [oh the rant came out of nowhere—])
Is Vi "dirt beneath your nails" supposed to be the hope?
It's so ridiculous (god, don't get me started on the bullshit ass "Humans are imperfect and that's what makes us beautiful so Piltover should be forgiven for the oppression and uwu baby they are baby and not perfect uwu" speech that they had Jayce pull out of his ass-)
If s1 wasn't so insistent on the class battle, I wouldn't have expected anything from s2!!!!!! There's a bunch of media with 0 class awareness I enjoy!!!! But those stories don't have their characters monologuing about how the ruling class is keeping them in the dirt half the time. If you wanna borrow the emotions of a theme, then you better carry that theme with you the entire way!! It can end badly, no progress has to be made, but make it into a point and don't chicken out halfway through!!!

Round 3, Day 2 - ALL TEAMS (Extra Summon - Tempest)
The lone Faker stood in the midst of the storm, awaiting whoever was to challenge her.
Tumblr media
A figure, spiraling down from the heavens and striking at the Faker. The Alter-Ego, beautiful and proud, engaged in swift close combat as her bladed legs danced against the sparking metal of the Faker's sword. They seemed to be evenly matched, as the Alter-Ego laughed.
Tumblr media
"I don't get what all the fuss is about--! I could handle you by myself, you know?"
Tumblr media
"Alter-Ego… I like that warrior's confidence, but it won't be enough!"
The Faker's eyes flashed, the Alter-Ego's movements slowing in a critical moment as she was struck off the chariot, only recovering fast enough to safely land on the ground to regroup. The chariot wheeled downwards, charging at the Alter-Ego before a gust of wind threw it off course, the Faker's attention turning to another Servant. The MoonCancer, hovering in the air with massive flapping elephant ears, venting to nobody in particular.
Tumblr media
"Gh… why couldn't I have 'support-type' build? Then I could just hang back and throw out buffs while everyone else got in close with the fighting. Ahh-- whatever! If I'm a tank, then I'm a tank! Let's draw some aggro!"
With the Faker's attention drawn elsewhere, two more Servants rushed into the fray.
Tumblr media
"The sound of lightning…!"
Tumblr media
"Come, o' Blade of Flames!"
Two attacks, simultaneously struck at the Faker. One, a glittering roseate fencing blade thrust forward. Second, a dark saber of cursed flames slashed downward. Both attacks forced the rider of the skeletal chariot to reel, as she retaliated with her own sword, knocking them both away with a thunderous strike as they both spiraled in the air, struggling to catch themselves.
Tumblr media
"Uwaah--! That sword… is fast…!" "Hahaha! She's a bit tougher than a standard Heroic Spirit! Good! Very good!"
On the ground, two Servants watched. One of them, a Pretender in a white cloak, held out his hands as magic sparkled outward, providing energy to the direct combatants as they fought against the Faker. The second, a Ruler wearing a heavy blue cloak against the storm, was waving her banner proudly, light shining from her body.
Tumblr media
"You must be the Ruler, looking at how proudly you're waving that flag. I didn't take a Ruler for one to want a reward."
"I don't care for the reward, just for solving this Grail War. This battle... we'll have to work together, but by some metric one of us will be determined as 'the best'."
"An 'MVP', perhaps?" The Pretender chuckled. "So, nobody can afford to sandbag either. Everybody wants to be a winner, right? Even someone like you can't afford to lose."
She slammed down her banner, the harsh rainfall temporarily broken by golden light that pierced through like an arrow, covering all the participating Servants against the Faker-Class.
Tumblr media
"You're right, I don't want to lose either...so, let's give it our all! Come, Faker! Let the battle begin!"
Tumblr media
"Hahaha! Now this is what I love to see! In this bout, I shall serve as your seventh! So come, show me that warrior spirit! The greatest of you will face glory, and the cowardly will face punishment! Warriors of the Extra-Class, Mages of the modern era, distant as you may ever be-- show me your resolve, and Faker will return it in kind!"
Due to the presence of all participating Servants everyone is put on fair ground! No boosts or demerits apply, the results are what they are!
The Servant who does the most against Faker (as in, gets 1st Place) wins!
SCORING:
1st Place will receive a boost of their choosing from an assortment for their next round!
2nd Place will not receive any rewards, but evade punishment!
3rd through 5th Place will gain a -2% demerit during their next round! These demerits bypass any resistances!
Last place will gain a wound that bypasses any damage evasion passives!
