Meanwhile, Bowser's castle was hit with a Beauty and the Beast curse... while Bowser wasn't home, meaning Junior is now stuck as a beast and honestly having a great time. The servants are pretty unhappy though and it'll be a pain having Junior shed all over everything (and privately Bowser feels bad he wasn't there to protect everyone, plus kissing Junior's newly-fluffy head didn't break the curse which makes Bowser terrified that he doesn't fully love his son and really is as selfish as people say) so he sets out to find whoever did this and rip them apart.

Soon thereafter he runs into what appears to be a princess with very cool taste in pets, and can't resist turning on the charm.

Luigi would have cleared up the misunderstanding right away, except Bowser is so bad at being charming that it loops around to actually being charming. Telling him who he is after flirting back would just make things awkward and maybe get Luigi set on fire. And Mario, despite lacking thumbs or proper vocal chords, is making it extremely clear that he doesn't approve of Bowser and "Princess Emerald" getting too close. Better to cooperate until they find the enchantress and high-tail it out of there as soon as she's defeated.

Unfortunately it turns out the curse still follows Cinderella rules, so at midnight the ballgown disappears and Bowser finds out after all. He's just as pissed as Luigi was afraid he'd be. There's some fire breath tossed around. But he's more embarrassed than anything else, and the fact that he's the only one without a curse (and that the "dog" is actually Mario) cheers him up enough that he decides to stick it out as part of the team.

He doesn't admit that he'd really started to like Princess Emerald in the afternoon they spent together. She was nice. She listened to him. She laughed at his jokes. And he can admit he's got a thing for big blue eyes. The fact that all those traits are the same whether Luigi's in a dress or in overalls is not one he wants to think about.

(The curse affects Luigi from noon to midnight so he still gets mornings to look like himself. Honestly it wouldn't be bad at all except a ballgown isn't very practical and Luigi's mildly offended that the curse also shaves him.)

So they go on, Bowser tries not to flirt, Luigi tries not to fall for his flirting, they both fail and wolf!Mario suffers.

Eventually they do catch up with the enchantress (probably after a lot of other curse-induced fairy tale shenanigans) and try to fight her. The gang is winning when she suddenly blasts Bowser with something that seems to kill him outright. Luigi, devastated, kisses him before getting up to keep fighting.

The enchantress sees this and goes, "Eewww!"

Turns out she's a little girl who got her hands on a powerful magic artifact. True Love's Kiss didn't break any of the curses because she's seven and kissing's gross! Now that they know she's a child (and that Bowser is just sleeping like Snow White) Mario and Luigi are reluctant to fight at full strength. Instead Luigi distracts her with his pretty pretty princess accessories, so Mario can dash in with wolf speed and steal the artifact.

Bowser is extremely confused when he wakes up, saying something about a weird dream he had, but all the curses are broken and everyone can go home. Problem solved. Definitely no lingering feelings and awkward secrets.

Definitely nobody is going to keep thinking about that teary goodbye kiss when Luigi thought Bowser was dead...

Dream of life. Jane doe walks on stage, and is kind of crumpled over, and slowly makes her way to stand up with stiff movements. This is the only song I have a recording of. As she slowly stands up, Jane doe lifts her head.

She has an echo effect added to her voice, and it sounds amazing. 

The Karnak is honestly hilarious, I loved his comedic timing. I can’t tell if he also had the echo effect, or if he was just an amazing voice actor. Sometimes he would mess up a line, but very quickly turn it into a robotic stutter, which was pretty smart. Love this guy. 

For virgil, they projected a projection of him onto the backdrop curtain. He was so silly I loved himmm. There was a fun transition from tiny rat form to anthro bass player. The bass solo was also great obv. 

Uranium suite was incredible. Ocean has almost this Disney channel main character voice? Idk but it’s so good. 

Mischa was slacking the whole time duh. Pulled out his phone at some bits. Ricky looked bored out of his fucking minddddd. Constance is just the sweetest ever I will kill for her. Noel is amazing and I love him. Like the pure SASS and EVERYTHING about him. Ricky the whole time stared into the audience like “kill me now”. We made eye contact a few times it was nice haha

After Uranium Ocean is kind of like,, calm but freaking out?? She kicks Karnaks box a few times throughout the show, including here. There are fun lights flickering and sound effects. Her voice is squeaky and cracky when she panicked or whatever. Again, karnaks comedic timing is amazing. 

What the world needs was so good. Oceans voice is amazing, the choreography was so snappy and swishy and sassy, very ocean. They hold up signs that spell out OCEAN, and in the flip side of them there’s a picture of ocean. Everyone was on point, and oceans delivery of every line was perfect. Like, the pure disgust she has when she goes “and a transformer movie” like babe has a personal vendetta against transformer movies.

I cannot stress enough how on point the choreography was, during the whole show, but like, I’m obsessed with the choreography of this song. There was a lot of hand flicking of that makes sense? Some fun little kicks.  There are tiny clips of it in some of the promo. 

After wtwn, ocean is freaking out. Karnaks delivery is perfect “blah blah blah needs a unanimous vote” oceans face drops. Long pause. « from each. And every. Member of the choir.”  

When ocean says she “loves” Jane, jane reaches out her arms and runs to hug her, but ocean dodges her and Jane doe just ends up almost running  into a wall. When she says she loves Noel, he just looks at her like “bitchgetthefuckawayfrommeew” and does his gay little pose. 

(E, the actor for Noel, uses they/them, so if I use those I’m talking about the actor) The play was so cute. After Noel said his line, ocean started crying and screaming and her and Constance were whining “NOOOEEEELL WHY DID YOU SAY TAHTTTTTT!!???” “UGH you always ruin these things!!!”  And stuff haha. It was great. 

Noel’s monologue was incredible, he fell to the floor during the dramatic bit about wanting to feel, goddamit.

 “I wanted to wake up,” fake throwing up for a second “in my own VOMIT.” huge grin. “Missing TEETH!” 

Noel goes behind the curtain/projector screen that they have on stage and starts singing. At about “I write poems to burn my firelight,” he comes out in Monique costume. Monique was so cool, she had fishnets, the iconic black wig, and a dress just like kholbys iconic one, but there was a little bow in the front,  and the skirt had strips of ripped fabric on the skirt. 

Again, the choreography of this song is amazing. everyone had chairs, and it was very leg-y? If that makes sense? But like in a “sexy” way, not an “Irish jig” sort of way.  Super snappy and clean cut. vocals are amazing, obviously. Ricky is kindof ominously standing in a corner with a beret and a cigarette playing the accordion. 

For the kiss, Monique and Constance danced together, then Monique and Ricky. Then Monique slapped Ricky, and Mischa comes over and they kissed. Adorable. 

The ending was so good, like the final « if I could have just one dream/if he could have just one dream/id be. That fucked. Up GIRL./HEY ». Mwah. Chefs kiss.

Every story’s got a lesson was so silly. Constance nailed the improv scene. This Ocean just. Needs to be in control. All the time. But like?? I’m making her sound bad but I felt bad for her because she wants everything to go her way but she’s not great at expressing that in a positive way. Any way, Constance gets excited at the end, like, « so I go out and do all. The. Drugs. 😁😁 » her little « BATH SALTS FOR EVERYONE!!! 😃😃 » 

Anyways. Mischa. 

Spence is literally an amazing mischa, he was so good. He started beatboxing really badly into the mic before he started talking about feeling, and the audience laughed. His accent was on point, and he spoke really naturally. Like, it didn’t feel super forced unlike some other Mischa’s I’ve heard (all Mischa are amazing some are just better accents yk)

This song is awesome was so fun. He had a tight white undershirt under his button down, which kind of just added to the silliness of the song instead of just being shirtless, yk? He had a chain and hat, duh. 

Everyone had these massive light up glasses, and Ricky was wearing a robot mask. It was so silly and I loved it. They did the iconic thing where they held onto Mischa’s unbuttoned shirt and made us flow to look like wind blowing

Omg. Talia. So this was so good. 

He awkwardly yet confidently re buttons his shirt, which the audience laughed at but I was like “yall stop that this gets emotional” but I think I’m just a bitch lol. 

The Talia monologue was incredible. Just, yes. Delivery was amazing, everything. I cried. A lot.  Mischa scrolled on his phone when something new appeared in the projector, like the photos and stuff. They used the curtain/backdrop as a projector screen, and there was the footage of Talia and Mischa. The wedding stuff and romance and shit. 

It was so sweet. I don’t have anything special to say about it, the monologue was just amazing. I completely broke down. 

For Talia, oh god. This was genuinely of the best things I’ve ever seen live. Spence’s voice is amazing, and again, I sobbed through this whole song. 

Everyone had the traditional costumes, and the girls had the big skirts, with the projections of Talia on them. I wasn’t sure if they were gonna do that, but it was beautiful. They also had the projection on Mischa’s chest at the end, when he’s belting. I completely fucking lost it.  

And then there’s the iconic nischa hug.  My heart. 💜 oh my god.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROGER TAYLOR

It is Roger Meddows Taylor's birthday today so of course I have to make it all of yours problems and yap about it.

We've gotta start off with how talented this man is. He is the KING of drummers in my eyes and will always be. Watched a full concert today to celebrate, and I was just focusing on how fast he could move, and he wasnt always looking at the drums. And his little solo in the Montreal concert and I was staring at him and oh my gosh he can move fast. He looked tired afterwards. And his voice is amazing in its own unique way. I love it. I love listening to live songs and looking out for his baking vocals. I died everytime. My favourite song to hear live is Crazy Little Thing Called Love just because of Roger's rEaDy FreDdIe 🤠. I die every single time I hear and go insane you don't even know. His backing vocals are just *mwah* CHEF'S kiss 🤌.

And his high pitched screaming in In the Lap of the Gods is amazing. Theres a video of Roger Taylor blessing your ears for an hour and a half and it's just him screaming in that song and it really does bless your ears.

Plus he's got solo albums. And unless I'm horribly wrong, he has the most solo albums out of the entire band. I don't have a favourite album but a couple of my fav songs are The Key, Man on Fire and Strange Frontier.

He's written lots of hits and great songs including Radio Gaga, A Kind of Magic, One Vision, These are the Days of Our Lives, The Invisible Man and of course, I'm in Love With My Car.

Then there's the underrated songs that I love like Drowse, Action This Day, Ride the Wild Wind and others that I forgot and I cant be bothered to look up.

He also studied dentistry in uni. I don't know if he would have actually ended up being a dentist if he hadn't joined. But just think if he did.

I just watched a video while writing this called the genius of Roger Taylor and they talked about how good he is on drums and used drum talk that even though I play drums, I haven't been playing long enough to understand, so they go into more depth on how talented he is on the drums. And you've gotta talk about his heart warming lyrics.

And what makes that even better is that sometimes during concert he would mix the lyrics around, whether on accident or purpose, I don't know, but he would say "with YOUR hand on MY grease gun." Life changing.

Moving on from talent, we gotta talk about some more amazing things about him.

He's a funny little boy. Watch some clips of him and you'll see what I mean. I don't care if you don't agree with me, I know he's a funny little boy.

"He threw my best fucking pair of maracas. Great sounding maracas, took me HOURS to steal them, and he just..." I can't write the next part without it seeming like it's a roleplay because it's a motion he makes of throwing stuff away in the air.

Anyways, it was his idea to dress up in drag for the I Want to Break Free video and that was one of his best ideas ever. Rogerina looked amazing.

What a goddess. And when I Want to Break Free got canceled in America, he would help stand up for the video and wouldnt feel ashamed that they did it and said they had a great time and it was fun.

And somewhat similarly, but more importantly, after Freddie died, and the press were being homophobic perverts and saying stuff like Freddie had it coming, or he lived a promiscuous life style, Roger (and Brian) would go on TV and stand up for Freddie and would be like "thats not true at all, you fucking pricks." That's not what they actually said. And he would then go on about how the press were massive dicks to Freddie while trying to get into his private life especially towards the end.

As someone who doesn't get celebrity culture at all, can I ask why you think people care so much about Luke and Nicola maybe being together? I'm a Bridgerton fan, and I enjoyed them as Polin, and I enjoyed their interviews, but I could never imagine being invested in their private lives. I just can't imagine why people even care? You don't even know these people. Do you care about the love life of random strangers too?

I really like this question! Let's see if I can properly vocalize my thoughts towards this.

People wanting Luke and Nicola together probably starts at the source material. The fact that Bridgerton (the tv series) is based off of a book series, people have had many years to invest in Colin and Penelope as a couple. In the series, we are also able to have two seasons of them interacting and starting their love story. This has strengthened them as a leading couple and has curated a loyal fan base. People are invested in the characters which leads them to be invested in Luke and Nicola. People want Penelope and Colin to be happy and by default want Nicola and Luke to be happy.

There will also inevitably be people who have a difficult time separating the characters from the actors. This is where is can get tricky, because it somewhat speaks to the talent of the actors (they have portrayed their characters so well that people have a hard time distinguishing the characters from the actors). But it sometimes isn't healthy or helpful to the actors or fans if you can't separate the two. It will ultimately cause disappointment to the fans and sometimes anger geared towards the actors.

There are also people that know they are not their characters, but they see it as a fun real version of the Polin story. Seeing a real romance play out in front of you in real time, would/could be beautiful.

And knowing that the fan base of the books and the series love the romance genre, it can be easy to see why they would push even harder for them to be together. People want all of the romance, on and off screen.

I also think that because Polin as a whole was made for the wallflowers, the relationship was made for the 'regular' people, it's more difficult to separate what is real and what is not. People can easily see themselves in the characters and at a base line level, it is people living vicariously through them.

Then the promo/press tour started and we had so many opportunities to see Luke and Nicola interact. They have great chemistry, they do very well together in interviews, they get along, you can see that they make each other happy. This further pulls people into shipping them for real because to the outsider, they see that the potential for a good relationship is there.

So to recap, it starts with the foundation of the story and people being very invested with the couple, both sides of people being able to separate and people not being able to separate (that's a lot of people rooting for them on different sides of the fandom), their relationship being 'normal' and relatable, and then what seals the deal is seeing them interact.

It's the perfect storm for a whole lot of people wanting them to be together and rooting for them. They had the perfect foundation for so many people to be on board with them, for people to want them to be together.

For me personally, I don't really care who they date. Do I think that Luke's current relationship as a whole is questionable? Yes. But ultimately it doesn't effect my life in the slightest. Has it been a wild ride to turn off my brain from my real life and look into other people's lives? Also yes, but I do try and be respectable when it comes to that because it is their actual life.

It can be nice to forget about the 'real world' and focus on something happy, something different, something that doesn't effect you, to be invested in something other than your own life. I guess it comes down to disassociating from your own life, which if not handled with care, can be unhealthy, and I think everybody should keep that in mimd.

Julie and the Phantoms Song Recs: McFly Songs that are Sunset Curve/JATP Coded

So, McFly are a big British pop/rock band that have been around since 2003, and are still releasing music and touring at the time of writing in 2024. I saw them perform live in 2023, and loved it. 💖 That tour was to celebrate the release of the most recent album (at the time of writing) - Power To Play - and listening to that album immediately gave me Sunset Curve vibes, and then I subsequently realised that they had been making Sunset Curve/JATP-coded songs throughout their whole career. 🥺💖

Edit: So, McFly are really popular in Brazil, and they released a song with popular Brazilian band Fresno in 2023 as part of the Power To Play album - Broken By You... and I've just discovered that Fresno actually had a cameo in Julie e os Fantasmas (the original Brazilian show that Julie and the Phantoms was adapted from) in episode 3, so this whole post has gained a lot more validity in a '6 degrees of separation' kind of way 😍👏

Eddie and Chrissy are on it like a car bonnet. That's to say, they are big into PDA and physical affection. They both crave the intimacy sex brings just as much as the pleasurable side of it. It makes them feel wanted, needed, like they are home.

I personally think Eddie and Chrissy are virgins when we meet them in season 4. Chrissy's probably done some PG stuff with Jason but it's nothing to write home about. Eddie's felt someone up at a gig but again nothing fancy.

They get to the physical stuff pretty quickly in their relationship. They aren't a slow-burn romance, more like a 'i need to see you naked now' sort of thing. They're both nervous about their first time but when it happens it just feels really natural and right (they have sex like 3 times that night).

It's a given at this point in the fandom, but Eddie loves going down on Chrissy. It's his favourite thing to do (and he likes it when Chrissy tugs on his hair to show him exactly what she wants). I can also see him enjoying role play (no duh).

Chrissy likes going on top so she can press her chest against his and ride him. She likes the contact and being able to hear Eddie whisper dirty things in her ear (he's really good at it). It's also pretty great to have that element of control (it's the same when she gives him a blowjob - she enjoys the reactions she inspires).

They are very open about trying new things. Eddie finds he doesn't really have a limit, so sometimes waits for Chrissy to initiate stuff. The last thing he wants is for Chrissy to do something just because he wants it, especially as Chrissy is such a people-pleaser.

They have sex everywhere - trailer, her home, shower, bedroom, van, lake house, school locker room, backstage at the Hideout. They're animals, ok? (and thankfully Chrissy goes on the Pill after Eddie forgot protection once and they did it anyway - silly kids).

Eddie is the KING of aftercare and the biggest cuddler afterwards. He loves taking care of Chrissy and resting his head on her chest so he can hear her heartbeat. Chrissy gets really sleepy after and lazily combs his hair with her fingers.

Sara Hess and Ryan Condal can try as much as they want to make people sympathetic to TG, they can make Daemon out to be this cold, violent, aggressive man who has never really loved Rhaenyra, they can try to paint Alicent as this poor victim who only wants peace, they can try to make Aegon out to be this poor family man who loved his children, and yet nothing could ever make me like TG.

And, nothing could ever make me hate Daemon or Rhaenyra.

I actually think in this season they are trying to cram as much character development as they can that they should have already established back in season 1.

I think that they are trying to make it that Daemon truly loves Rhaenyra...but they really shot themselves in the foot by how they also make it unknown how/why Rhaenyra has had 6 or so years of living with him and showing how she actually never truly trusted him when he's actually been one of the very few she always trusted. And not just thought of as some "challenge". It felt like Sara Hess really was just writing a bit of her own views about how she'd question Daemon.

As for Alicent seeming like a poor victim, I actually think that its the opposite that's being shown. From how she lightly protested against being a "spectacle" when Otto said the Queen and queen dowager would ride behind Jaehaerys when she was the one to encourage Aegon to listen to Otto when she finally seemed to have some influence over him; how she sleeps with Cole again despite knowing they are both at fault for Jaehaerys' death by their inattentiveness; how she puts her grieving daughter through that and doesn't advocate for her at all, instead compelling her to perform for "the throne"/Aegon/the king who barely acknowledges her even as this was one of the only times that Helaena actually had some form of a conversation with her in all the encounters we see them have together thus far, Helaena's own vulnerability Alicent isn't aware she is rejecting; how she thinks that this is the appropriate time of all time to try to address Helaena catching her w/Criston. Alicent here shows how she is really putting others.

And bk!Aegon always, I think, loved his kids in some way as a father does his offspring...his son more for his daughter sure. It's that it's very easy for him to put himself first and forget them as Alicent does him with her/his avoidance of sincerity in favor of a performance of power and will. I think there's a lot of self loathing there that prevents him from really trying to bond with anyone and that he only allows himself to care abt those that he can claim makes him "stronger" than otherwise (his history with Otto and Alicent), and that definitely happens to be Jaehaerys/his heir rather than his daughter.

That doesn't make him a good father or even a good person, he's still a fucking rapist of many servants as well as his own wife. And he thinks Rhaenyra's murder wil finally fix all his issues, have him claim righteousness and his "birthright", still thinks Lucerys' death is no matter at all and that he didn't deserve some form of payback. that he is already just. Nor that either his mother or grandfather are suddenly exempt from blame and corruption. I still despise the greens and I don't uwu or babygirl any of them. But again he did love his kids...it's a weird twisted, corrupt sort of parental love bc thats what he knows and has ever tried to really understand of his own volition afterwards.

As for cold Daemon, while I do think Daemon would take great offense at Rhaenyra's vocalizing doubt of him and dismiss her claims of disloyalty its the way they had him refer to his grievances with Viserys and Rhaenyra also going back to how he treated Viserys as if Viserys always acted fairly towards Daemon? Because he didn't, and worse so against Rhaenyra in some ways...I don't know, Daemon always seemed a bit of a more of a talker than in show and he definitely wrote in "journals" in F&B. Could be just me.

Yeah we see the dude vulnerable and we often see him do heinous things...where's the "light" and softness other than a few cheek massages here and there that greatly under-number his "dark" moments?! Annoying. There isn't a balance at all or some sort of back and forth dynamism in his character that he's known for. And it seem more plausible to the audience bc we do not get to see how he and Rhaenyra build a home at Dragonstone bc of that stupid time jump. thus it's so much easier to just assume that he's been like this the entire period, which itself simply makes no sense. A lot more people would have to be constantly anxious for that to be true.

All that has been true abt HotD!Daemon, but it really becomes so obvious here, bc Rhaenyra's words about not trusting him simply don't coincide with her having this bond and understanding of him that goes beyond what Hess seems to think is a "challenge". Yes, of course they challenge each other (or are supposed to) and push the other's lines--it's part of what attracts the other to each other--but Hess seems to believe that is the only thing that draws them together and thus doesn't understand why they trust each other and it really shows. She assumes it's just a teen girl's flights of liking the "bad boy" for the sake of trying to "tame" him that she is just now starting to outgrow?!

Again, when you go to not just episode 7 of the 1st season where Rhaenyra says she needs Daemon ("I need you uncle. We have always be meant to burn together."), implying she trusts him. Episode 2 of the same season where she tells him if he wants to "win" and take back that inheritance--that S2 E2!Rhaenrya says he's still trying to obtain--he'd have to kill her --- does Daemon not choose to not even try to manhandle her? She knew she wouldn't, too! So why is Daemon so static (answer: added misogynoir against Laena and making as if she didn't matter when in book, his having a family with her sort of "mellowed" him out and resettled/solidified his actual priorities--family--and so he can be more volatile against Rhaenyra in a faux attempt to be feminist). Yes he's the rogue prince...."rogue" people are not incapable of actually being non violent to those they care about....that's Daemon's entire thing!!!!

And yes, bk!Rhaenyra seemed to feel that Daemon was a good candidate for fatherdom and commandering her armies/being her partner partly bc of his relationship with Laena and his own twins showing that he was capable of it. That Rhaenyra is doubting thim to this degree after 6 long years where they could have maybe had this argument much earlier over something of else critical importance ANd Rhaenyra chooses this volatile man to be around her kids makes her look very stupid. I'm sorry. I think I said this already, but rhaenin-time already discusses it here:

I honestly think that Hess can't reconcile with a female protagonist who isn't always trying "tame" a man through partnering and "harnessing" their "evil" for the ethical status quo she is familiar with's order, and then have that character be ethically not either evil or "good".

But you know, I'm not bitter or anything...yes they are both kinda right and maybe im thinking too much of book Dameyra, but even the characters are still being inconsistent. I mean, Otto says Aegon is endangering their cred by hanging ratcatchers when he himself hung nobles at court in last season's epi 9?!

Ava x Janine

"They’re for you - to say thank you or somethin like that." Ava made a big deal of rolling her eyes, but Janine was almost certain she could feel some fondness behind the overacting.

Ava didn’t knock before letting herself into Janie’s office at the district, bottle of red wine in one hand, bouquet of dark purple tulips in the other.

Before Janine could say anything Ava was shoving the flowers into her hands.

"They’re for you - to say thank you or somethin like that." Ava made a big deal of rolling her eyes, but Janine was almost certain she could feel some fondness behind the overacting, "I know how hard you worked on all that landmark shit today."

"Ava…"

Setting the bottle of wine down other woman’s desk, Ava threw her hands up in the air, "I went and bought a scratcher with that ten you gave me and won sixty bucks, so this makes us even.”

Despite Ava’s deflection, Janine felt warmth spread across her face and her stomach flip, suddenly nervous in a way that only Ava made her these days. ( She’d never admit to chasing this particular high to anyone else, but it was certainly getting harder to deny to herself.)

"Well are you gonna invite me to sit for a drink or?"

Janine swallowed hard, "Yeah, I uh have some mugs we could use."

She fumbled nervously in her drawers looking for the nicest mugs she had, "I’ve never actually drank in my office before.”

"Amateur.” Ava remarked, as a small smile played on her lips.

Janine set the mugs down in between them as Ava pulled a corkscrew out of her purse, making quick work of the bottle and filling both mugs. "You like it here?"

Janine couldn't quite parse the intent behind Ava's question, (she found that lately, she couldn't really put a finger on Ava’s intentions in general) so she took a sip of the red wine, tannins hitting her squarely in the back of her cheeks and reminding her that she'd been so busy that she hadn't eaten anything today.

"Yeah, I mean it's a really awesome opportunity. Everyone has been great and I feel like i've actually been able to accomplish some important stuff." She avoided Ava’s eyes, looking down as she swirled the red liquid around in her mug before taking another sip, "But …I do miss Abbott."

“Abbott isn't going anywhere.” Ava paused for a moment, as if debating whether she should vocalize the rest of her thoughts, “But I hope you’re not either. You are coming back right?”

Janine watched the other woman's face for a moment. There was something different there, the normal self confidence and bravado washed away for a rare moment in the warm light of her office. (Was it the same electrifying nervousness that was running through her own body? No, couldn't be.)

"Yeah." Janine chewed on her lower lip, "I've learned a lot here but if i'm being truthful i'm really looking forward to getting back in my clasroom."

"Well good. I didn’t want to go through the process of hiring a new teacher.” Ava idly ran her finger around the lip of the mug, "We should proabbly be taking advantage of your home strech here at the district then. As my mole we should be syncing up a little more often, debriefing on some of that valuable info.” She paused, “Maybe weekly over a drink."

"I'm not-" Janine stopped herself, still unable to shake the look on Ava's face from moments before, "you know what, that sounds good."

In the warmth of the office, guards down, they talked until Janine went to fill up her mug and the bottle was empty.

Spell broken, Ava cleared her throat, "Well wine's gone, time to get outta here."

"Uh, I think I need to call an uber. But you should get home." Janine picked up the bouquet of tulips with one hand, holding them close to her chest, and opened up the uber app on her phone with the other hand.

"Damn you really are a lightweight huh?" Ava stood in the doorway, "Come on, I'll give you a ride home."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah, but the offer is not gonna last long so don't push it."

As they left the district office building a few minutes later, walking down the street to where Ava had parked, Janine could swear she felt Ava’s fingers ghost over hers where their hands swung between them.

( Yes, she was very much looking forward to getting back to Abbott.)

wow oh man i have forgotten how to do this!! but it's spring, it's the end of the term, it's the start of a new season and a new burst of creativity and, perhaps, a different routine-- so let's try again.

reading audio-books and ebooks have been my absolute constant companions all winter, but shout-out to the stack of paperbacks on my bedside table, which i am slowly but surely working through. finished italo calvino's if on a winter's night a traveler (a loan from @hematiterings), part of my now intentional quest to read calvino's whole oeuvre, and basically loved it. the whole 'first chapters of various novels you'll never get the rest of' was such a good way to showcase a bunch of cliches from, like, mid-century literary fiction. very meta, and very fun. the connective frame narrative, in second person, was a little more of a stretch (again, very mid-century literary self-referential/ironic/whatever, which unfortunately i did find amusing)-- and calvino's female characters are not great, except for in the nonexistent knight's narrator who i loved)-- but there was a section addressed to a female reader which did, in fact, feel like it read me for absolute filth. other finished reads from the last few months which i will mention here briefly: the angel of the crows, katherine addison; our wives under the sea, julia armfield; the bell in the fog, lev ac rosen; the nutmeg's curse, amitav ghosh; the ruin of kings, jenn lyons.

listening this would have been different if i'd written this last week, but have y'all heard beyonce's album cowboy carter?! i know i'm a few months late but i actually feel like i'm years late, like i haven't responded to a beyonce album this strongly maybe ever. i love the covers, i love the vocal layering and harmonies, i love the samples from old timey radio and everything familiar and texas and country about it...i keep thinking i have a favorite track, but genuinely i like listening to this one all the way through, as a cohesive album, as a work in itself. have a pitchfork review. pull quote:

watching so in addition to rewatching the entire sixth season of dropout's game changer today, last week we finished a truly wild show out of netflix italy: la legge di lidia poët / the law according to lidia poët, which is a historical mystery-romance like only netflix can make. is it bridgerton but for ninteenth century italian lawyers? is it the girlbossification of an actually interesting historical figure? yes, maybe, but everyone is very attractive and the costumes are bonkers in a satisfying way. she has insect themed jewellery, rides a bike, has a lot of sex, finds a decent relationship with her brother and, god help me, i do want a second season.

featuring, hey isn't that pasquale from my brilliant friend? and wow, they probably think this song choice is really cool but it is so on the nose in english it is almost distracting.

playing hollow knight! hollow knight. hollow knight. it's become a problem, actually, since i have quite literally turned my evening yoga time into gamer time, and would you believe, i am less flexible and have higher anxiety levels lmaoo. but i'm getting so powerful i don't care. i probably can't promise myself to beat this game any time soon, and should stop thinking i can, but look! two dreamers down?!

making patched the inner thighs of some jeans-- they will probably remain weekend pants, but they're further from dead than they were. similarly, clumsily darned a hole in my sweater. baked a caffeinated cake courtesy of a b. dylan hollis video (coffee loaf from 1959) . glued a wooden salad tong back together and i feel like the seams are actually quite subtle.

(this wood glue claims to be food safe after curing, pray for me etc etc).

working on ooof. i am done teaching but still owe two-three students emails. i survived my committee meeting but have done nothing to follow the schedule of deadlines we set me, despite being so excited to back on may 2 / so energized to do All the Things back on april 26. i have an article to prep to submit! a chapter to finish tweaking (reworking? reframing? changing from the ground up? lololololol)! not to mention a newsletter to draft and copy edits (almost done) to send back on a friend's article! but i can't stop playing hollow knight in all my free time, and really, what's more important here.

IGGY POP: Once I heard the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters, and even Chuck Berry playing his own tune, I couldn't go back and listen to the British Invasion, you know, a band like the Kinks. I'm sorry, the Kinks are great, but when you're a young guy and you're trying to find out where your balls are, you go, "Those guys sound like pussies!" I had tried to go to college, but I couldn't do it. I had met Paul Butterfield's guitarist, Mike Bloomfield, who said, "If you really want to play, you've got to go to Chicago." So I went to Chicago with nineteen cents. I got a ride with some girls that worked at Discount Records. They dumped me off at a guy named Bob Koester's house. Bob was white and ran the Jazz Record Mart there. I crashed with him and then I went out to Sam's neighborhood. I really was the only white guy there. It was scary, but it was also a travel adventure—all these little record stores, and Mojos hanging, and people wearing colorful clothes. I went to Sam's place and his wife was very surprised that I was looking for him. She said, "Well, he's not here, but would you like some fried chicken?" So I hooked up with Sam Lay. He was playing with Jimmy Cotton and I'd go see them play and learned what I could. And very occasionally, I would get to sit in, I'd get a cheap gig for five or ten bucks. I played for Johnny Young once—he was hired to play for a white church group, and I could play cheap, so he let me play. It was a thrill, you know? It was a thrill to be really close to some of those guys—they all had an attitude, like jive motherfuckers, you know? What I noticed about these black guys was that their music was like honey off their fingers. Real childlike and charming in its simplicity. It was just a very natural mode of expression and lifestyle. They were drunk all the time and it was all sexy-sexy and dudey-dudey, and it was just a bunch of guys that didn't want to work and who played good. I realized that these guys were way over my head, and that what they were doing was so natural to them that it was ridiculous for me to make a studious copy of it, which is what most white blues bands did. Then one night, I smoked a joint. I'd always wanted to take drugs, but I'd never been able to because the only drug I knew about was marijuana and I was a really bad asthmatic. Before that, I wasn't interested in drugs, or getting drunk, either. just wanted to play and get something going, that was all I cared about. But this girl, Vivian, who had given me the ride to Chicago, left me with a little grass. So one night I went down by the sewage treatment plant by the Loop, where the river is entirely industrialized. It's all concrete banks and effluvia by the Marina Towers. So I smoked this joint and then it hit me. I thought, What you gotta do is play your own simple blues. I could describe my experience based on the way those guys are describing theirs . . . So that's what I did. I appropriated a lot of their vocal forms, and also their turns of phrase—either heard or misheard or twisted from blues songs. So "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is probably my mishearing of "Baby Please Don't Go."
