“Hiding away at your own party?”

Sam locates the birthday boy from the sobs coming from an upstairs closet. She cracks open the door.

“I promise Chris wasn’t trying to be a jerk when he got you that E=MC squared keychain. We genuinely thought you’d like it.”

She catches the glow of bright red hair on Demetri’s phone screen and suddenly understands.

Sam pushes aside some jackets, sitting beside him. “That’s the sort of thing Eli used to get you.”

“Yeah.”

A pause.

“I really loved him, Sam.”

She pulls him close as more tears come. “I know. I’m sorry.”

Actually inspired by an ask I did forever ago about what Demetri’s first birthday without Eli must have been like (for the sake of angst, Imma say it’s during the fall so he could have had one during S3. Also he just seems like an autumn birthday kinda guy, idk). I imagine the Miyagi Dos tried to throw a little party for him and he was really touched by the gesture, but...it just felt empty without Eli there. And then someone makes the mistake of getting him something exactly like what Eli would have bought for him, and the facade falls for the first time all night and he completely breaks down. But Sam does her best to help <3
