So yes I would be lying if I wasn’t looking forward to the wicked movie(s) especially as a fan of the books because it seems like they draw elements from the books that were absent from the musical but also the global marketing campaign is feeling a little tone deaf in comparison to… the books
#like sure it’s been a couple years since I reread them#but I’ve read wicked legitimately 6 or 7 times at varying stages of my life#starting when I was way too young but still understood part of the sociopolitical criticisms in it#like as a 9 year old it made me inherently suspicious of any authority#but I have reread it at several different stages of my life#and I’m preeeeeetty sure this global campaign is a little too Ozian#which makes me nervous for what elements of the book they’ve drawn on to meld with the musical#because I love both but they are fundamentally different narratives#and it doesn’t actually NEED such intensive marketing it’s really all spectacle at this point#it’s been so long in the making and already has like 20 years of recognition and fame and fans for the musical alone#and 30 ish years since the first book was published#not to mention the fan base for each respective cast member#it’s all feeling a little#questionable#excessive#lavish to the point of grotesque??????
