If other medias are allowed (you said things) I suggest:
Books
Die Känguru Chroniken (the kangaroo chronicles) by Marc Uwe Kling. - Hilarious Buddy comedy series between a comedian (Klein Künstler) and a communist Kangaroo. It does a good job lampooning without being mean. It makes some interesting points about gender, success, Hollywood, and life in the modern era. It has a lot of Germany-specific references in it, but nothing a quick google search can’t fix. I don’t know how many people outside of Germany remember the RAF. The most important thing is that it’s funny. He also has a sci-fi series which is really good if you like Sci-Fi.
Die Wilden Hühner (the wild chickens) by Cornelia Funke (same woman who wrote inkheart) - A YA book series about a group of girls growing up together. Deals with money, sexuality, discrimination, first love, and first betrayals.
The Neverending Story by Micheal Ende - kid goes to a parallel fantasy world where the world is slowly disappearing into nothing. You’ve probably already read it in English, but I really like the German version.
Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka - It’s use of language is so good. I’m very biased here but I love this book. I wrote a whole paper in college just about the opening line.
There is more great German literature, but I’ll restrain myself for now.
Podcasts
Note: I haven’t found any German TTRPG podcasts yet (recs always welcome), and will update if I find.
Erdbeerkäse - podcast about German Reality TV. No you don’t need to actually watch German reality tv to enjoy it. They have a huge back catalog.
In the trend of adults reviewing their favorite childhood media:
Generation Martinshof podcast from two sisters about Bibi und Tina, they don’t update frequently but when they do it’s great! Bibi und Tina is about two girls (one can do magic) who ride horses.
Die Tosende Hollywoodschaukel Podcast about TKKG. I haven’t listened to every episode but what I have heard is great. TKKG is about a group of friends solving mysteries together.
Movies
I am not a Movie Person (an understatement) but a lot of the Renaissance Disney movies were translated songs and all. Part of Your World has nothing Ein Mensch zu sein.
German films/TV Recommendation Time
okay Leute, here are some quality German things I can personally recommend:
1. Goodbye, Lenin! (2003). dir. Wolfgang Becker. This film is a classic. I have never met anyone who disliked this film. Basically, a lady falls into a coma before the Berlin Wall falls, and wakes up afterwards in a reunified Germany. Her kids think she won’t live very long, so they try to pretend nothing has happened- and it quickly spirals out of control. There are so many themes touched on in this movie–serious themes–but explored in a fun, comical, interesting way. Also features young Daniel Brühl, 10/10.
2. Das Leben der Anderen (2006). dir. von Donnersmarck. This is honestly one of my favorite films of all time, but as a warning, it’s quite serious. The ending is nice, at least, but this is not a “oh east germany can be kinda funny!” movie, like the previous one. Essentially, a STASI officer starts to develop empathy and see the world differently while listening in on the conversations of a subversive playwright. Visually this film is beautiful and the character development is fascinating – it really illustrates the terror and the distrust that existed at that time, a theme I feel like many people outside of Germany are unaware of.
3. Lola Rennt (1998). dir. Tykwer. This is a cult classic, and if you watch a trailer online, it doesn’t really do it justice. This movie basically explores various “what-ifs” and how small things (like tripping down the stairs) can completely change the outcome of a story. It’s very fast-paced and fun–this is a good movie to watch with friends. There’s less Existential Angst™ than in the majority of German cinema.
4. Der Himmel über Berlin (1987). dir. Wenders. Okay, this is 100% what comes to mind when I think of “pretentious European art film.” However, it is also incredibly beautiful and well-written, and if you like poetry and/or the Cold War and/or are interested in film composition, please watch this movie. Essentially, two angels watch normal people in their day-to-day life, and reflect on some Big Thoughts™.
5. Die Welle (2008). dir. Gansel. This is a movie that unfortunately will never stop being relevant. In fact, I wish this was part of the curriculum in high schools. This film is loosely based on real-life events, where a high-school teacher conducts an experiment to see just how quickly people can, essentially, turn towards fascism, violence, and an extremely “tribal” (or “group” ?)-based way of thinking. The experiment spirals out of control, to a tragic end.
6. Der Staat gegen Fritz Bauer (2015). dir. Kraume. I loved this movie. This is about a lawyer who wants to track down Eichmann (the Nazi war criminal) and bring him to Germany for trial. This is an excellent film because it deals with so many issues– the problem of former Nazis and Nazi sympathizers in government jobs (as well as the corporate world) who obstruct justice; it deals with homophobia and gender identity issues; as well as issues regarding bravery, and “staying alive” vs. “standing up for what’s right.” Having a gay Jewish protagonist in a German film that takes place in the 1950s/60s is really quite amazing, I recommend this heartily.
7. Sophie Scholl: die letzten Tage (2005). dir. Rothemund. This is maybe the only real “WW2 film” I think I’m going to recommend. Frankly everyone should know the story of the Scholls and their heroic actions.
8. Barbara (2012). dir. Petzold. This is a very dramatic and romantic movie with a strong female lead. This also takes place in East Germany, where a doctor is banished to the countryside and is forced to see things in a different light. This is more of a date night movie in my opinion.
9. Gegen die Wand (2004) & Auf der anderen Seite (2007). dir. Fatih Akīn. These are both movies that deal specifically with the German-Turkish experience. To me, these movies felt very Turkish, and are quite good - so if you are interested in learning about what is probably Germany’s biggest minority group, I would start with these.
10. Jenseits der Stille (1996). dir. Link. This is a very cute and touching movie about a (hearing) girl who has two deaf parents. She eventually decides to pursue a career in music, which her parents don’t understand. This deals a lot with identity issues (i.e., there being a distinct “deaf culture”), growing up, and family.
11. Freier Fall (2013). dir. Lacant. WELL, this was (to me, anyway) not exactly a masterpiece but it was a very enjoyable gay film. If you want to see Max Riemelt tenderly kissing another man, and/or fantasize about getting it on with one of your “Straight™” friends, then this is the movie for you. And frankly, who doesn’t want that, from time to time.
12. Romeos (2011). dir. Bernardi. I love this movie because there’s literally nothing else like it. There is an incredible dearth of media that features transsexual men, and this film found a way to do it that wasn’t offensive or patronizing. And to specifically address that you can be trans and gay–that gender identity and sexual orientation are not the same–wow! I’ve never seen that discussion anywhere else (except maybe in sense8, but I digress). The only thing I could criticize this movie for is that it’s a very “transition-oriented” film–the main character does not have much of a personality outside of transitioning. However, for what it shows and for what it is trying to do, it does it very well–the scenes are heartfelt and relatable, and the protagonist is very believable.
**These next few are television series.
1. Deutschland 83 (2015). If you haven’t seen this series yet, what are you doing. This is the most popular and interesting German television series that’s happened in a while. Essentially, a guy from East Germany gets recruited as a spy to live in the West… and a lot of espionage and great ‘80s music occur. It deals with some serious themes, but at the same time, it’s attractive because it has light-hearted moments and a lot of heart.
2. Der gleiche Himmel (2017). This has a very similar premise to Deutschland 83–another “east german spy” series. However, I think selling it as a Deutschland 83 rip-off for Netflix would be unfair–the series has merits of its own, and is much more serious in tone. While Deutschland 83 at times runs into “Goodbye-Lenin-joke-territory,” Der gleiche Himmel does not let you forget the dark side of reality. I enjoyed that this series let you see several different people’s lives, instead of focusing on just the spy–among them, a girl with Olympic aspirations who was given steroids by her coach (and suffered side effects re: male puberty), and a gay physics teacher whose lover was on the other side of the border, and was cut off from.
3. Dark (2017). If you like Stranger Things (or Xfiles)–you need to watch this right now. Personally I liked it better than Stranger Things (though I might be biased). It has a similar starting premise–the mysterious vanishing of a young boy. However, this series is so… German. We start off with a quotation from Albert Einstein, and rapidly get into an intricate, time-traveling mess. You could watch this several times and notice something new each time.
Alright, that’s all I can think of for right now– feel free to add your own! viel Glück!
#goodbye Lenin is great if you haven’t seen it#it’s really lovely and absurd but has so much heart#the crazy shit we do for family#finally started watching dark with my mom and it’s great#I definitely see the stranger things comparison#but I think the feel is more broadchurch#which I love

I never really understood this idea that if you enjoy a piece of fiction you want it to keep coming and coming endlessly. No matter how attached I am to a group of characters, if I had the choice I'd always prefer a short but finished concluded piece than something where seasons get added On And On And On And On until everyone is flanderized and the entirety of it falls flat.
#moontalk#media critique#netflix#its like. a few years ago i watched this show on Netflix called broadchurch i think#murder mystery thing where the premise is solving the murder of a child#so i watched it and then the story was over and done with after the first season and the murder was resolved and i was like yep#thats a good ending to that very conclusive#and im like yay what a good show. and then i see theres other seasons#and idk i feel like the expectation is to be excited but i just felt disappointed?#like the story is done. its over. i dont want more seasons im happy with it the way it is#idk how common this is though like is the idea that you want everything to continue#smth that capitalism just feeds us and people dont actually feel that way? or is this really how most people#feel about stories#IDK MAN I JUST. dont like stuff that keeps continuing it just feels like it doesnt actually know what it wants to Tell the viewer through#its art

yeah i'm watching the 5 hour chibnall era hate video essay rn and while i do think it gets very nitpicky at moments it actually does a lot in pointing out what i unconsciously felt about some of the episodes feeling dull and the companions feeling flat but couldn't put it into words. in multiple instances i think chibnall is struggling to juggle this many companions and fit them into the story. and i can't help but think about broadchurch and how it juggled a whole TOWN of characters; just how well constructed s1 was where every person feels like a suspect for the murder so you're paying attention to all that happens on screen and every action they take may or may not make them seem more guilty. ntm hardy and miller as the leads are by far the most interesting characters; they have the most compelling dynamic in the show, olivia colman and david tennant have fantastic chemistry, they're so fun to watch bc their work relationship is initially built on them dislike/disrespect but we see them grow to genuinely care about each other over the course of the story. i think chibnall as a writer isn't suited for the story he tried to tell with thirteen and her gang bc he wasn't willing to take risks and have the relationships between thirteen yaz ryan and graham be unique and compelling in a way nuwho hasn't done before
#even the tone brings it down i think. if thirteen's era was more like power of three;#fun. full of personality. really genuinely hilarious in that it leans into the comedy of what a found family#between a human couple and their alien friend would look like. i think it would be really great.#but it feels like it's trying to be serious and grounded what w the tone the visuals the music#which is already .. not a Great fit for doctor who but the fact the character dynamics are lackluster certainly doesn't help#dr who#13 era#broadchurch

On David Tennant and Aging
So, I’ve seen a lot of posts in response to Tumblr users’ habit of affectionately calling their favorite middle aged dudes “old men”, David Tennant in particular, saying things like “clearly you’ve never met an actual old person”, “omg you talk about these guys like they’re 80”, “please be normal about people aging”, etc. And on one hand, all of these statements are objectively right and true! But as someone who’s always been really fascinated by and found a lot of beauty in getting older (which I’ve explored in some of my writing on A03 because nobody else is going to do it for me), I’d like to provide a bit more nuance on how I think this label applies to David in particular.
David, obviously, in literal terms, is not “old”, at least not to me- I don’t personally consider people old until they get past 60. 52 is middle aged, simple as that. And yet, when I see David stuck with the “old man” label, it still somehow feels weirdly right, for a number of reasons.
It annoys me so much when people say David “hasn’t aged a day since Doctor Who”, because, well…
He clearly has. A lot. He’s got forehead creases, deep crows’ feet and eyebags, and I think that post-Fourteen we’re gonna see him rocking the grey temples a LOT more. He also has the voice of an older man now, his upper range is still there but the default is much more deep and rich, with a gravelly, rumbling quality that just goes straight through you. I personally think Broadchurch was when David finally started to embrace looking his age- Alec Hardy just wouldn’t have been served by Ten’s fresh-faced boyishness.
Obviously, these are the kinds of changes you’d expect any 52-year-old man to have, but something about David just makes it all seem a bit more… intense? The expressiveness of his face combined with his almost gaunt frame makes his wrinkles very prominent, and when he works his voice to its emotional extremes, his lower register can sound positively ancient, to devastating effect.
David, I think, is someone with an old soul- I don’t think he could be as good as he is at playing ancient characters like Crowley and The Doctor if he weren’t. He has lived so many lives, given so much of himself to so many characters, often incredibly tragic ones, and I think it wears on him. David also has five kids. FIVE. Do you know how exhausting it is to be one of the hardest working actors alive and be a present, loving father to even ONE child? But David somehow does it anyway! Nowadays I see him and my heart breaks because he looks so tired, so weary and fragile. But he’s all the more beautiful for it to me because I know that that is because he is kind. He’s a deeply empathetic person who feels and lives to the absolute fullest, and that story is written so clearly on his face, along with every other story he has ever been a part of.
There’s other things about David that make the label endearingly fitting- his utter hopelessness when it comes to technology, for instance. And he’s just got that warm, wise, grandpa energy too sometimes- look at that above Fourteen picture and tell me I’m wrong!
I once showed my friend who’d only seen David in Doctor Who and Harry Potter a picture of David from Around The World in 80 Days. It was a particularly emotional scene, and his face had just the most beautiful expression of compassion and sadness, every wrinkle on full display. And she said, in a less than complimentary fashion, “he looks so old!” Which, of course, offended me quite a bit at first. But to me, referring to David as old almost feels like a badge of honor, something he’s earned by living fully and selflessly, working hard and being wise and compassionate beyond his years. I think David himself is secretly more than a little insecure about the fact that he’s getting older. There’s sadness behind every jovially self-depreciating remark he’s made about his age in the past year, particularly in comparing himself to Ncuti Gatwa. I know how much David struggles with his impostor syndrome and how people perceive him, and I can clearly see in his eyes the fear of being discarded, the anxiety he feels about if he’ll still be as loved as he was back in 2007 now that he’s closer in age to King Lear than he is to Romeo. So I hope David knows it’s a privilege to watch him grow older, to watch his soul and talents deepen with the crinkles around his eyes. If I, in my silly goofy tumblr girl-ness, call David Tennant an old man, it’s because it’s a label that suits him beautifully- even if it isn’t TECHNICALLY an accurate one yet.

Yapping time, Hello! It's rainy and Nicolas is making lentil stew 🥰
I wanted to thank everyone for the enthusiasm over my art and all the comments you sent yesterday 😭 you are all very sweet you make me excited to share and keep making art and that is such a huge gift I'll always be grateful for. I not very proficient at social media and keeping up with everything everywhere and end up feeling like I'm not thanking you enough or talking enough so I want to make sure you know that every comment and funny tag makes my day!!
I was going to make more posts talking about DAV but halfway through writing down my frustrations I realized I was not having a good time (and most of my issues with the game have already been covered by Chelsea over twitter way more eloquently too 😆) so I'm going to focus on the parts I did enjoy! I settled on a personality for Rook and now I'll probably replay as a couple of classes to find the one I enjoy the most since I've only tried mage so far.
We also got back to our quest of watching all of David Tennant's work! now in our cozy new sitting room with a fireplace 😭 what the fuck
We finally watched 'Rivals'! We were not expecting it to be a raunchy Pride and Prejudice in the 80's lmao. It was very YA and very gratuitously sexual which is not something we normally go for. We were not really into the main couple and were more invested in Declan's success and whatever Tony and Cameron had going on lmao but it was a fun watch regardless!
Then we also watched 'You, Me and Him' and we were expecting it to be one of those 'it's so bad it's good' cringy comedies but it was genuinely so funny and sweet lmao we always seem to have opposite taste to most critic sites sjakfh The styling was so accurate and hilarious and it felt very Hallmark. We loved it!!
Now we will probably watch the second season of Arcane! we loved the first one a lot so I'm sure this one won't disappoint.
We are trying so hard to resist the urge to rewatch Doctor Who, Broadchurch, There She Goes and Jessica Jones though lmao our crush remains as strong as ever if not stronger 😭
I think I've read every single Broadchurch fic in existence at this point, and I'm painting Alec as we speak oughhgrh help
Other random updates, we managed to get train tickets for a short trip to Madrid on Christmas so we can spend it with Nicolas' family who are still visiting. And also Nicolas is learning about mushrooms since he found a bunch growing in our garden and it has become his latest passion. Now he wants to go gathering, he has already cooked a bunch, he is so excited.
Anyway I think that is all for now!! I'll have more art soon now that I'm finally settled and can get back to my normal schedule 😊 I hope you are all doing well!

'The actor and Baftas host answers your questions about facial hair, Doctor Who, Scrooge McDuck – and growing up as the son of a minister
How do you face the challenge of being this year’s Bafta host? practicalpanic I don’t currently feel particularly challenged because everything’s written down for me and I don’t have to worry about winning – or not winning – an award. If it was the first night of a play, I’d be curled up in a corner in the foetal position. But the fact that it’s not my day job certainly feels liberating. Who knows why they asked me; I must have been pretty far down the list. Expectations are pretty much zero. I don’t have anything to prove. Will I be phoning [previous Bafa hosts] Jonathan Ross and Stephen Fry for advice? I might do. But I’m travelling in blissful ignorance at the moment.
What’s your sideburn policy? They appear to be sized in direct proportion to your characters’ confidence. DrHugbine That’s a very interesting observation, which I don’t think has any truth behind it, but it’s making me wonder …
Here are some examples … Fright Night’s Peter Vincent – long and bushy, confident vampire killer. The Doctor in Doctor Who – long and pointy, charismatic and charming. Broadchurch’s DI Alec Hardy – beard, no sideburns, introverted and suspicious. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’s Barty Crouch Jr – no beard, no sideburns, complex and a traitor. Good Omens’ Anthony Crowley – ginger, no sideburns, stylish but tempted Eve in the garden of Eden as a snake so a bit of a bad egg generally. TopTramp I don’t think you’re going to write a doctoral thesis based on that evidence. It’s very thin evidence, at most. I grew sideburns for Doctor Who because, back then, I was worried I was a bit young for it and I thought they slightly aged me. Which, of course, I then had to recreate recently when I’m almost certainly too old for it. I guess increasingly I am unshaven, in which case you don’t really have to worry about sideburns because they’re part of something else. Whatever length my sideburns are on the night of the Baftas has no reflection on how I’m treating the Baftas.
As a vicar with young kids, I wondered what influence being a son of the manse has had upon your work? RevdAl It’s hard to know, because you only know the influences you had specifically from your parents because they’re your parents – it’s hard to unpick. It certainly wasn’t a childhood filled with religious dogma or any kind of restrictions. It was more a moral guidebook.
What was it like kissing Michael Sheen [in season two of Good Omens]? And who enjoyed it more? carnies18 Who enjoyed it the most? Presumably Michael was thrilled. How could he not be? But it was another day at work. The most difficult bit was other people’s awkwardness. We thought it was quite fun, so it was fine. He’d brushed his teeth.
Would you accept a knighthood just to fuel an excellent argument with Sheen in the next series of Staged? Shirls Because he sent his OBE back? That predisposes the fact that anything that’s talked about in Staged is based on real life. We are in our own houses, acting opposite people we spend our life with. But that’s pretty much the extent of the reality of Staged.
Which is best – playing a detective, a murderer or a murder victim? JonnyMorris1973 Well, one of them solves the crimes. One of them commits the crimes. And the other one has a crime done to them. It probably depends which character the writer is most fond of and therefore the most fun to play. It’s not really in the gift of the actor, so much as in the gift of the scriptwriter. I think I’ve only played one detective, haven’t I? What’s my favourite way I’ve been murdered? Oh my goodness. I was shot in The Last September. I get murdered on stage every night in Macbeth, although that’s a spoiler. I sort of died in Doctor Who when I got shot by a galvanic beam in a radiation chamber that filled my body with more radiation I could cope with.
Am I as geeky as the Doctor who fans? Yes. As a Doctor Who fan myself of old, I can very much can plug into that. I don’t think I ever got in trouble at school. That is one of those stories that’s ended up on Wikipedia. I wrote an essay on Doctor Who, which some unpleasant newspaper found and printed. But I didn’t get in trouble for it. I think I got quite a good mark for it.
Who would win in a fight between Crowley, The Doctor and Scrooge McDuck? AlistairDionysus Probably Scrooge McDuck. He seems to be able to survive just about everything. He’s far more resilient than Crowley or The Doctor, who seem to end up staring destruction in the face. Scrooge McDuck, nothing seems to trouble him.
You have a lovely singing voice! Would you like to do a musical? Beatrice_Tate, gaityr, laibarra622 and Luigii I make a nice curry, but I’m not going to open a restaurant. Would I do the Masked Singer? I love The Masked Singer. Nothing has excited my eight-year-old daughter more than when everyone thought Ricky Wilson from the Kaiser Chiefs was me, week after week. You can imagine how disappointed she was when it turned out I wasn’t.
If you were a cheese, what kind would you be? BrianBraddock I’ve got very into paneer curries. Paneer is neither hard nor soft, so I’ll say that because it makes me sound like I’ve really thought about it.
What’s the last item you snatched from a set? NataliaBCN I’m just going back through things I might have pocketed. Maybe this is the upbringing we talked of earlier. I’m very bad with nicking things. I’m plagued with guilt. The last time they released a new sonic screwdriver toy, someone gave me one but I gave it away because I’m so full of generosity, but now I slightly regret it.
Your portrayal of serial killer Dennis Nilsen [in ITV’s Des] was truly terrifying. How do you prepare for a role like that? YorkshireExPat With someone such as Dennis Nilsen, there is quite a lot of material that’s been written about him. There’s video evidence of him. So you immerse yourself as much you can, then join a line between that and the version of the character that’s in the script, because, ultimately, that’s the version you have to portray. One thing we were very careful to do on Des was to not make it from his point of view. I don’t think you can ask an audience to sympathise or understand someone like Nilsen. It’s the story of how he got away with all these things, then was caught. Hopefully the audience is left thinking: how can someone who is just another member of the human race be committing these extraordinary acts and the rest of us not notice or understand?
If you could regenerate as anyone else for the day, who would you choose? TopTramp My wife, just to see how annoying I really am so I could be properly objective and understand her pain.'

18: When/how do you come up with fic titles?
(it wouldn’t let me paste the question so i paraphrased)
Oooo! Thank you for asking!!
I'm honestly so so bad at fic titles. Like, I am potentially the worst at it ever. When I started The Never-Ending Sky I had the first 15 chapters planned but not a single idea for a title. I remember desperately asking a discord server (the TOTA one, I think) for title ideas and someone suggested I use a quote from the show, so I went on a 'best broadchurch quotes' article and settled on Alec's broody-i-hate-broadchurch monologue. The title ended up being quite fitting, I think. Alec didn't want to be in broadchurch, hated every part of it, but slowly got used to it and stayed. Campbell tries to run away at first and hates the place, but slowly gets used to it!!
For my other stuff, 'Don't Be Daft' (broadchurch) is a very shit, last minute title that is just a quote from the work. 'Shellshock' (broadchurch) was a bit more tricky, and it originally had a different title. I struggled on that and my friend suggested using a lyric so I picked a vaguely relevant Coldplay song. After I uploaded it I went to sleep and i genuinely woke up in a daze and immediately changed the title to Shellshock because I thought about it while sleeping somehow???? Anyway Shellshock is more fitting because of the war themes + the whole seashell thing.
'Sometimes I feel I've got to (run away)' is a song lyric, the song plays in the fic and it's about Campbell running away from home (pre-hospitalisation), so it made sense really.
TL;DR: i come up with them last minute and struggle immensely
(The only fic I've named properly before writing it is one I haven't even written yet, 'JUDE', which (if I ever make it) will be an entirely Campbell-centric fic that cuts between him in the hospital and the lead up to his hospitalisation, a bit like my other TOTA fic but longer and with entirely different events - framed as Campbell reflecting, while dealing with the loss of his father; the complicated grief of such resurfacing his pushed away grief about fergus. The title is after Hey Jude by the beatles, but is also directly linked to the story)

Ok I've said before food as a love language is incredibly important to the plot and character relationships in Broadchurch, but I'd LOVE to specifically unpack S1 Ellie and Alec's relationship more when it comes to this. (excuse the image quality)
Ellie and Alec are at odds with each other from the start. Ellie is incredibly connected with the community hurt by Danny's death and very openly caring, while Alec is standoffish and with very little connection to the community.
This great divide is best seen with this love language!
Ellie especially at the start will offer food and drinks, which Alec ends up declining one way or the other. It creates a big disconnect between the two as they still are getting to know each other and further shows Alec's standoffish character and disconnect from the community.
In fact, Ellie even gets a bit offended when Alec doesn't naturally offer the same service (getting/making a drink for someone) when he's making tea. I'd even say, Alec doesn't take great care of himself the first season when it comes to food.
He often neglects his basic need for sustenance (adding once again to his distant personality) Which to Ellie might seem especially foreign. Still, no matter how many times he shoots down her offers (or accepts it but doesn't eat it), she keeps on coming with more food just as a base level of care.
To Ellie, giving food to others is basically second nature, even if she doesn't like them. Though giving food to Alec is a service only for those he respects and values, a love that needs to be earned.
You could even say at the start, food is to Alec as much release as his medicine are for survival. To get through the day and focus on other more dire things.
But these are just small interactions. He knows how to handle a cup of tea, but he doesn't know how to place himself when he's invited over for dinner. It's an platonic intimacy he hasn't had the pleasure of enjoying in a while.
And because food to Alec is such high tier level of friendship, he feels like he has to give the same kind of appreciation back to the Miller for inviting him...... By going overboard and buying flowers, chocolate AND wine.
and still as he's eating dinner he can't help but interrogate Joe a bit and not fully let his guard down. Because honestly, besides his job he doesn't have any Outside Of Work pleasantries going on. That guard is the most stable thing he's got
But he starts to warm up more and more, making toast for himself on the job, which surprises Ellie too. But as his heart problems and worries catch up to him he feels forced to still deprave himself from joy
But you can tell he's grown more connected to the community as a whole and his colleagues, with him even offering to pay for a round of drinks while not even present. Unknowingly, taking on some traits from Ellie, while Ellie slowly becomes more serious and straight to the point like Alec.
Then as Alec finally collapses fully and the true nature of his condition is revealed, Ellie of course becomes angry he didn't tell her. She says she hoped he'd choke on the grape seeds but in reality this is her being worried for him and showing she cares.
Then you have the reveal, and food as a love language takes on a whole different meaning
Where her love had previously filled her stomach, the breaking of her heart throws it all out again. Her vomiting at the revelation is honestly the perfect way for her character to show her world has been turned upside down. it's gut wrenching.
And don't think I didn't notice the bright yellow mug behind the picture of her family, as she packs up her stuff to leave the case and sleep in a hotel. The security of her life, her love, stolen from her by the action of someone she trusted.
The symbolism of it all just in S1 is insane.. .i can't get enough of it.

hi....Broadchurch fic idea?
okay so, I have an idea for a fic but I lack the time, talent and energy to write it. So I'm looking for someone to write it.
I have nothing to offer anyone, but if somehow someone would like to write it, or add more bullet points to it or draw it, please do, and please tell me about it.
If you would like to do something with it or if you know someone who I can send an ask or something to who would maybe be interested, please reply.
This idea has been bouncing around my head for a while and I'm becoming obsessed with it, but it needs fleshing out.
Idk how good it is but here it is (it's a little vague, sorry)
Okay so:
• Alec and Ellie were childhood friends (this in itself is an idea I really like, especially if they didn't realise they knew each other for a while, I think they sort of did suggest that Alec had been to Broadchurch as a child which intrigued me)
• Alec is a trans man and Ellie met him before he transitioned (maybe part of the reason why she didn't recognise him, Alec also maybe wouldn't recognise her but because he's bad at faces)
• Alec was a sad child, I don't know why but I feel like his father was awful, his mother was probably alright but don't know
•Ellie and Alec can be platonic or romantic or a secret third thing
•angst, hurt comfort (when they are children, when they're adults, both, I don't mind)
• would be sweet if one or both of them were sort of talking about this friend they had when they were younger (not realising it's the other) and then they slowly realise their memories match up?
•also had this idea of maybe when they first met one of them gave the other something ( I was originally thinking Ellie finding sad Alec on the beach while looking for seashells and giving him one, and then she finds it in his house many years later)
• I sort of feel like Alec didn't have that many friends even when he was younger so he probably kept the seashell because it really meant a lot to him? Maybe Ellie or someone Ellie teases him for it later and he gets kinda teary and embarrassed because it really did mean a lot to him, and then they talk
• also feel like Alec is autistic
If anyone wants to make something out of any of this or expand on any parts or write a fic based off of this I'd love to see it!!!

I’m still amazed that the BBC let Chris “wrote the Cyberwoman episode of Torchwood” Chibnall anywhere near Jodie’s run, never mind putting him in charge of it
gonna be brutally honest here anon I have never seen torchwood so I cannot comment on that specifically, BUT!
chris chibnall isn’t as awful of a writer as people think. in my opinion, he was hindered by his love of classic who. he was writing for a completely different show in a completely different time, and a lot of his plot and lore decisions make more sense when you consider the classic show. not to mention his politics, many of which were stuck in the 1960s-1980s.
as a result, fans of new who didn’t like it — certain key elements of it didn’t really gel with the current show and upset their understanding of the doctor as a character.
chibnall also made the mistake of listening to fans during his first season: everyone was saying they wanted new monsters and a break from daleks and cybermen, so he had a season of totally brand-new monsters. people hated it, said the show was unrecognizable. when he wrote a few new episodes with daleks and cybermen and weeping angels, people wrote it off because they’d already made up their mind about it.
I’ll always be grateful to chibnall for pushing forward and having the first female doctor. the pushback he received for that at the time gets largely forgotten. it would have been easy to give in to the massive pressure and recast — nothing of the seasons had been filmed when jodie was initially announced — but he refused to budge and backed jodie all the way. for that, I’ll always respect him. he’s put up with a lot of shit from the fans.
that having been said, disliking chibnall’s era is so valid. even though I really enjoy thirteen’s run (she is my wife I love her dearly) I can like that era of the show and also have enough critical thinking skills to see the problems with it. I’m pretty sure i’ve said it before but the politics of the chibnall era are atrocious (see: the woman who fell to earth, rosa, arachnids in the uk, kerblam!, spyfall pt. 2, the vanquishers — feel free to ask me to elaborate on any of these) and sometimes he falls into the trap many writers do when writing women, which is to water them down a bit. thirteen is Not as weak as many people make her out to be, but there are a few moments that irk me (see: needing jack harkness to break her out of prison. I’d have been okay with it if maybe she’d managed to stall the judoon long enough to send him a distress signal or something? maybe use the sonic to get his attention? just give her a bit of agency).
anyway, long story short, chibnall’s era has issues. but nowhere near the number that people attribute to it. as for why the BBC handed the show over to him, he was extremely successful as showrunner on broadchurch, had written well-liked episodes of doctor who and been head writer at torchwood in the past, was a massive fan of the show, and vocally wanted to being some changes and mystery to the show, something fans had been clamoring for for ages. my guess is he applied for the job, interviewed like anybody else, and they decided he was the best possible candidate.
no writer is going to have no misses, especially not on a show with such demanding deadlines as doctor who, and every new showrunner is a risk the BBC have to take. at the time, it looked like he was the man for the job. sometimes, it’s all just business.

the thing about criticism of doctor who episode "42" is that all of it is wrong and you should all feel bad "it's a ripoff of the impossible planet/the satan pit" no it's not <3, and also so what if it is bc i think every doctor who season should have an amongus episode to keep you on your toes "the conflict is resolved in an anticlimactic way" it's a martha girlboss moment and i personally think she should save the day more "it's boring and forgettable" my nightmares are still haunted by david tennant's screams "what are the themes" the themes are that ten is not dealing with his grief and trauma well at all and is atp 100% leaning on martha to keep going while also not letting her actually truly help him bc he will not let himself indulge in more than 5 seconds of real emotional vulnerability And also martha has not truly confronted the absolute nightmares she's experiencing by traveling with ten and being his sole lifeline "it's written by chibnall" yes and it bangs for no reason just like broadchurch god bless
#at some point i just need to confront the fact i probably watched an entirely different alternate universe doctor who to some of these ppl#dr who#10 era

may the best bait win! propaganda under the cut:
alec and ellie:
They're your classic workplace enemies to lovers. Alec takes the job that Ellie was meant for, they're forced to work together on a devastating murder case, they bond. Over three series Alec becomes more human and lets his walls down around Ellie, and she begins to respect and trust him as a colleague and as a friend. Its a Big Deal when they hug. In most cases, especially when it's an m/f detective duo, they would end up together. But yet. Thee David Tennant and Olivia Coleman did not even have an aborted kiss or feelings confession. Neither of them end up with anyone else but they don't hint at anything at the end either. Queer Ally of all time David Tennant does straightbait ironically.
oscar and andre:
Okay, so this might sound kind of weird but bear with me because I really think they should count. Oscar was afab but her father gave her a boy's name and raised her as a boy (by 18th century standards) because sexism and he had 5 daughters and decided she was going to be a son because they were a noble family and he wanted a son to become a high ranking military official because they're rich so they can just do that. Oscar joins the army and becomes Marie-Antoinette's personal guard. Her and childhood best friend Andre are very close through out the series (he supports her throughout the many scandals that she has to deal with because she works for the royal family) and at the end of the series it is revealed that they are in love, but they are both killed in the war before they can actually get together. The dying before they can be together might fall into the buried straights category but they relationship also has really queer energy because throughout the series it becomes apparent that Oscar usually Does Not Vibe with only the gender she assigned at birth. She sometimes refers to herself as a woman, sometimes refers to herself as a man, but her attitude is usually basically 'I'm a man, I'm a woman, I'm both, I'm neither, stop asking'. So I think they should count as straightbait because we find out that Oscar is nonbinary and Andre loves her no matter what her gender is (and then they die before they can get together).

Some various lighthearted life updates 🏃♀️
It's been a very busy last few months! in a good way mostly. We had a friend visiting us from overseas so we showed him around the city and took him to all our favourite places. We also met new people and were invited to a bunch of events so it's been very fun! We are all out of social battery tho so now we are slowing down a bit and getting back to work. Nicolas is on a short work trip to Berlin and I'm back to painting. We also started running! aaand we are also back to watching a bunch of shows and to me talking about it here to like five people 😌
Under the cut cause it's a lot as usual!
We finished watching S13 of Doctor Who! (we still have the specials to go but after that we are all caught up!) I haven't updated in ages so here are lot of opinions!
We really did not enjoy S11 😞 I was aware it wasn't very popular but we were hoping it was for all the wrong reasons, sadly we found many to be valid. Some of the episodes were baffling, Rosa? Kerblam?! the writing of the whole season in general felt like a rushed school assignment. The first part of Spyfall was a strong start for the next season but that ending in the second part was really not it. We did love Sacha Dhawan's Master tho!! and we really love Jodie too, 13th is adorable and reminded us of Ten at times! Jodie is such a fantastic actress that it makes the quality of the writing and everything else around her even more frustrating 😫 S12 was an improvement in general. In the last few episodes It felt like the writing team suddenly remembered the companions could have a personality and agency lmao. Highlights for us were Spyfall one, Fugitive of the Judoon and Haunting of villa Diodati, tho we did also enjoy most other episodes of the season despite their issues.
The timeless child plot reveal felt a bit underwhelming? The idea on itself has potential but it felt mishandled (and it had a bit of a Moffat flavour to it? and not in a good way). I think it was meant to add more depth to the Doctor's lore but in a way it ends up having the opposite effect. Then the flux was just a complete mess. It read like a Marvel sort of plot, very comic book like which is alright I suppose if that is something you enjoy but it felt out of place. But mostly it was just way too much, it got out of hand. Anyway we still have the specials to watch! and I think the Master is in them so we are looking forward to it 🥰
We also watched Broadchurch!! and we LOVED it. We ended up binging all three seasons. Chibnall's writing on this is surprisingly great and Jodie's acting is spectacular she really shines here. Olivia and David are always brilliant!! honestly everyone's acting was amazing. This series had us both tearing up every five scenes. The direction and the music are outstanding. I could watch Hardy and Miller solve crimes forever I really love their chemistry and dynamic. We went into it expecting the usual detective fiction but it ended up being a whole study on grief with such a focus on family and community and trauma and a ton of touching interconnected character arcs, just really really good!!
Then we also watched Taking over the Asylum!! MAN we were not expecting to have our hearts wrung out like laundry by this!! We thought it was a lighthearted show!! GOD we are still not over it, what the fuck!! It was so good we loved it!! but we were not prepared lmao what do you mean 'the end'?? we'll be thinking of this for months, I was expecting an extra scene after the credits or something. Excellent characters, refreshing depictions of mental illness and trauma and so crushingly realistic. Every character is so loveable I really wish this was longer 😭
And our quest to watch everything with David Tennant on it continues. We watched Decoy Bride on Valentines day too and it was terrible but such a hilarious fever dream kind of bad that it was fun, it has David on it and he never disappoints. I feel so lucky that Nicolas and I are both in love with him, get yourself a man who shares your celebrity crushes lmao it's so fun!! We feel like teens again chatting about him and drawing little hearts next to his pictures haha 🥰 We watched the BAFTAs just for him and speaking of the baftas!! I was not expecting that last drawing of his outfits to get that much attention oh my god 😭 thank you!! you are all insane and I appreciate it so much!! and thank you for all the support in general, about my art and photos and just everything. I feel very lucky and grateful 😭 anyway I'll end this before I get sappy, that is all for now! I hope this week is kind to you all, I'll be sharing some more art soon 😊

___ ___ ___ ___ ___
There was just something about the way that Alec spoke that enraptured you. The accent, the way his lips moved around the words. His tongue. God, Alec’s tongue. The amount of time you had spent fantasising about having Alec’s tongue buried inside you was, well, ridiculous.
“Eh, love? You alright? Not sayin’ much.”
You’re only pulled about halfway out of the trance when you reply-
“Sorry- thinking about your tongue.” It only takes a further second for you to snap completely out of it and realise what you’ve just said. “Oh, shit.”
Your cheeks go beet red and you slap a hand over your face in mild horror. Alec’s not usually a cocky bastard, but the way a smirk twists its way across his lips just drips with sin. Your breath hitches and Alec’s fingers reach out to caress up your thigh. Unconsciously, your leg twitches into his fingers. A silent plea for more.
“What ‘bout it? Huh? Thinkin’ ‘bout my tongue?”
You bite your lip as his grin turns darker. You nod, and his fingers trail up your thigh towards your sides. He moves closer. You can see the bulge growing in his trousers. It’s all you can do not to whimper- the memories of having him buried inside you to the hilt, fucking into you- oh this had to stop. But then again, you didn’t want it to.
“Yeah,” you reply breathily. “God, I want your tongue on my clit.”
Alec chuckles at your bold statement. Now that was unexpected of you.
“Spread your fuckin’ legs then, darlin’,” he replies with a nonchalant shrug. A moment later he’s beside you and pulling your chair away from the table. You let out a sound that’s halfway between a whimper and a yelp and spread your legs for him as he kicks your feet apart softly.
Another moment and he’s between your legs, spreading your folds with his fingers and licking a flat stripe up your clit. You groan, sinking back in the chair and you feel the puff of air hit your core as he chuckles at your reaction.
“Please, Alec?”
Alec doesn’t make you beg. He wraps his lips around your clit, sucks it into his mouth and flicks the tip of his tongue back and forth over you mercilessly. His fingers reach around to grip at your ass and tug you closer to the edge of the chair. He eats you like a man starved, salivating at the taste of your pretty little cunt.
“Oh, I could eat you for days,” he groans, breaking away to catch his breath. Your hips wiggle as the stimulation stops and as recompense, he pushes two fingers inside you, eyes entranced by the view of them inside you. Your cunt clenches around them and he laughs. “You like that, eh? Bet you do. Love having your pretty pussy stuffed like this.”
Your head drops back against the chair and you spread your legs impossibly wider. Alec approves if the way he crooks his fingers just right for you is any idea.
Another moment and his fingers are pulling out and his tongue is replacing them. Alec has to press himself as close to your flesh as possible to get his tongue as far as he can into your hole. You cry out, fingers digging into his scalp and holding him there.
Alec flicks his tongue inside you and rubs the tip of his nose against your clit as he does so. You keen, thighs trembling with the effort of not closing around his head and popping his eardrums.
One of his hands snakes around your thigh so his thumb can rub at your swollen clit.
“Fuh-huh-uuck,” you moan, grinding your hips against his mouth and thumb. He feels so good, and there’s no way you’re not going to cum on his tongue in the next few seconds. “Fuck, Alec- shit- I’m- I’m close. God, please.”
Alec laughs into your cunt as best he can with his tongue buried halfway into your core and he moves his thumb faster. You twitch and shake as the stimulation brings you closer and closer before-
“Oh, God- fucking fuck- fuck, Alec!”
Your fingers yank against his hair, grinding yourself against his tongue as you ride out your high. Waves of pleasure roll over you while the continuing stimulation on your clit makes you shudder and twitch.
He pulls his face away from your sopping cunt once he’s had his fill of your pussy and you grin tiredly at the blissful, wet mess that is his face. You can see your slick on his cheeks and chin. He wipes his mouth with the back of his spare hand. The sight of him panting, eyes black with lust does things to you.
All of a sudden, his fingers are rubbing against your clit again hard and fast. You yelp, hips twisting to try and get away from the overstimulation. He tuts and refuses to relent. Your hips buck off the chair, fingers white-knuckling the edge of the table.
And you cum again. But this time, you do the unthinkable and squirt. All over him. You’re shocked through the haze of pure pleasure coursing through your system, though it doesn’t stop you from making sounds a porn star wishes they could emulate. He’s grinning like a loon, rubbing at your clit like a man possessed until you have to basically all but kick him off you.
The noise that escapes him sounds quite like disbelief, and while the main thing you can focus on is the pulsing of your overstimulated clit, you still manage a shaky “shut up.”
“Never,” is his reply.
