Note
its ridiculous that they don't get penalized by this but ferrari played themselves.
they were waay too cautious and that 8 seconds gap in the first stint ended up biting them in the ass. If they made it to be like 5 second only instead, they wouldn't be affected by it.
There is always a chance something out of control will happen, backmarkers not respecting blue flags, sf, another team having better pace in another tyre.... they need to think about the possibility of something interfering and plan ahead.
This reminds me of baku, where they ended up putting pressure on charles with oscar and ultimately losing the race because they were too comfortable with the gap charles had on oscar in the first stint and took longer to pit him + play too safe with the outlap
This is the single most sane take about the race I've received in my inbox I'm kissing you on the mouth just for that.
I don't agree with all of this because I think it's a bit ridiculous to blame one team strategyʼs department for another teamʼs driver not complying with the rules. On the other hand, I agree that Ferrari stratʼs biggest weakness is historically that they can be quite rigid and not account for sudden changes and how to adapt. On a third hand that I don't have this hasn't been the case this season — Silverstone asides, I've mostly been impressed. Once or twice, they've actually been able to secure good results from other teams making blunders. Baku and also Mexico were objectively minor mistakes with relatively costly outcomes (in both cases one position was lost) but not the kind of blunder that makes you throw your hands up the air, you know? EYE went from looking at this strat team and thinking they need overhauling / a big culture turnaround, to being genuinely impressed with how fast that turnaround came about and feeling pretty optimistic overall.
My gut feeling while watching Mexico was “they're being a bit too careful but things look good” to “yikes that was unfortunate but could've been much worse” after Lando caught up and Charles spun out. Then I got on here and people where acting like they'd just witnessed Hungary 2022. I hope now that we've calmed down a bit is a good time to post this lol
tldr: I agree with your first paragraph and I agree that the Baku outlap was a mistake (but I'm not sure I'd say Charles was under too much pressure?) but also I do think they HAVE shown a lot more flexibility this season. And the backmarkers move on annoyance is alive and well
