(File) In its report on north Gujarat, The Nanavati Commission gave a clean chit to the police, BJP, VHP and Bajrang Dal and attributed the massacres in Mehsana and Sabarkantha districts of this region, to anger on account of the Godhra train burning incident of February 27, 2002. It cited instances to prove that in fact the Hindus were either assaulted for helping Muslims or they alerted the Muslims about possible attacks. These two districts lost maximum number of lives in the riots in this region. It noted that barring Mehsana that saw two convictions, the Sardarpura and DIpda Darwaja massacre cases in which 33 and 11 persons were killed respectively, several cases in which chargesheets were filed saw acquittals, going by the inference in the final report that was tabled in the Gujarat Assembly on Wednesday. The districts are Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Banaskantha, Gandhinagar and Patan, where rest of the complaints saw A-summaries being filed, according to the report. A-summary is filed in cases where the identity of the accused is not established for a prolonged period, while some cases continued to be pending in courts. CURRENT ISSUES IN HINDUISM

Introduction

Hindus are pluralistic in their beliefs and accept the myriad means of worship and prayer available to human beings seeking spiritual enlightenment. Hindu minorities living in countries throughout South Asia and other parts of the world are subject to varying degrees of legal and institutional discrimination, restrictions on their religious freedom, social prejudice, violence, social persecution, and economic and political marginalization. Hindu women are especially vulnerable and face kidnappings and forced conversions in countries such as Bangladesh and Pakistan. In several countries where Hindus are minorities, non-state actors advance a discriminatory and exclusivist agenda, often with the tacit or explicit support of the state. Persecution by state and non-state actors alike has led a growing number of Hindus to flee their country of origin and live as refugees

Persecution for Support of Gender Equality and LGBTQ Rights

India has a dismal record with regards to the treatment of women, gays, lesbians, and transgender people, all of whom suffer social ostracization, legal persecution, and honor killings for their gender and sexuality.[6] The rise of Hindutva militant organizations like the BJP, RSS, VHP, and BD fuels a culture of violence in India that has exacerbated the situation for minorities in the country.[7] ASMT has been singled out for persecution by Hindutva elements for their progressive stance on LGBTQ rights and gender equality.

Temple Destruction

Centuries of Muslim invasion devastated India’s architectural heritage, particularly with respect to Hindu temples. Today, the largest Hindu temples are located in South India (Tirupathi, Madurai, Tanjore) or in the eastern state of Orissa. These regions remained outside Islamic rule for most of their history. Meanwhile, the traditional heartland of Hinduism in the Ganges river valley (modern Bihar and Uttar Pradesh) as well as Sindh and Punjab feature no major large Hindu temples, most of which were destroyed during the Muslim conquest of India from 1000–1300 C.E. Many of the historic temples of major Hindu sites at Ayodhya, Kannauj, Mathura, Multan, Vrindavan, Varanasi, Thanesar and Prayag no longer exist.

The desecration of Hindu temples continues till the present day. Sacred deities are stolen and smuggled out of India, temple lands are illegally occupied, and temple sculptures are destroyed and disfigured by the very government body in charge of the management and control of temples and their respective endowments. In fact the Madras High Court acknowledged the dismal state of Hindu temples in Tamil Nadu when it stated:

“Many temples constructed at least 1,500 years ago or much before the temples recognized by UNESCO are in ruins. Even the daily rituals are not performed. Some temples remain closed throughout the day with no one to even light the lamps.”

Out of hundreds of thousands of temples across 56 kingdoms, only a fraction remain in previously Hindu territory. The rest were systematically destroyed, looted and shut down in a campaign of ethnic cleansing. In places like Afghanistan Hindu temples have been virtually erased from the archaeological record.

Lack of Recognition of Religious and Minority Rights

The plight of Hindu minorities is particularly concerning as these vulnerable groups remain marginalized and subject to discrimination, violence, social prejudice and harassment. Hindu women are particularly vulnerable and targeted for kidnapping, rape and forced conversion. The most egregious and systematic violations human rights take place in former Hindu nations where Hindus are now minorities such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Pakistan. Serious human rights violations against Hindus have also been reported in Bhutan, Jammu and Kashmir, Fiji and Sri Lanka.

Nepal, the world’s last Hindu kingdom, fell to secularization in 2007 due to pressure from Maoist forces. The Maoist takeover has resulted in the destruction of temples, closing of Sanskrit schools and the loss of cultural and religious identity of Nepalese Hindus. The secular government has banned ancient Hindu monastic orders in cases such as the Pashupatinath temple where a 300 year old lineage of service by temple priests was broken with their forced expulsion.

Cultural and Linguistic Genocide

Linguistic genocide is a central aspect of cultural genocide. The UN 1948 International Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of The Crime of Genocide cites the following:

“Any deliberate act committed with intent to destroy the language, religion or culture of a national, racial or religious group on grounds of national or racial origin or religious belief, such as (1) Prohibiting the use of the language of the group in daily intercourse or in schools, or the printing and circulation of publications in the language of the group; and (2) Destroying or preventing the use of libraries, museums, schools, historical monuments, places of worship or other cultural institutions and objects of the group.”

Sanskrit is one of the world’s most ancient and complex languages. The Sanskrit language was termed as Deva-Vani, or language of the Gods. The term ‘Sanskrit’ is derived from the conjoining of the prefix ‘Sam’ meaning ‘samyak’ which indicates ‘entirely’, and ‘krit’ that indicates ‘done’. Thus, the name indicates perfectly or entirely done in terms of communication, reading, hearing, and the use of vocabulary to transcend and express an emotion. An extraordinarily complex language with a vast vocabulary, it is still widely used today in the reading of sacred texts and hymns.

Islamic and British Invaders destroyed the ancient Gurukul education system thereby removing the oral tradition of the Guru-disciple relationship and preventing the widespread transmission of Sanskrit across the Hindu population, Sanskrit slowly morphed into a language spoken only by limited linguistic scholars and historians. Generations of Hindus were robbed the opportunity of learning directly about their cultural identity, poetry, science and religious scriptures and were instead forced to rely on sanitized English translations that often served to enforce colonial narratives. Rather than learn their indigenous language, Hindus were instead compelled to undergo an English education to better conform to British rule. Sanskrit and the Gurukul system of education continue to be suppressed in modern India.

In addition, the destruction of libraries, ancient universities and ancient manuscripts on science, vedic mathematics, ayurveda and astronomy contributed greatly to the linguistic genocide of the Hindu people. One such example was the throne of knowledge, Nalanda university and temple complex.

Nalanda University was the ancient center of higher learning, located in Bihar (in the ancient kingdom of Magadha), is India’s second oldest university after Takshila. Spread over an area of 14 hectares and accommodating 10,000 students, it was a principal seat of learning from fifth century CE until the Turkish invasion of 1193, attracting students from as far as Tibet, China, Greece, and Persia. According to accounts by pilgrim monks from East Asia and other historians, the curriculum in Nalanda University included study of the Vedas, mathematics, logic, Sanskrit grammar, medicine and more subjects in every field of learning. The great library of Nalanda University was so vast that it is reported to have housed more than 9 million manuscripts.

Nalanda was ransacked and destroyed by Turkish Muslim invaders, under Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1193 AD. The library burned for three months after the invaders set fire to the buildings. The Muslim invaders ransacked and destroyed the monasteries and massacred all Hindu monks, teachers and students. Nalanda is but one example of Hindu art, history, literature and spiritual teachings being put to the flame in an exercise of linguistic genocide and book burning on a scale without historical parallel.

Godhra Riots - Gujarat CM Narendra Modi appealed for Death Penalty for Hindutva Leaders

Godhra Riots took place just one month after BJP lost Assembly Elections across SIX STATES across Northern India, giving a terrible SHOCK to Senior RSS , VHP and SANGH PARIVAR Leaders. On morning of 27 February 2002 , Four coaches of Sabarmati Express mysteriously caught fire killing killing 59 people ( All Hindus ) , including 25 women and 25 children. Local BJP Politicians including SANGH PARIVAR Leaders immediately blamed local muslims for buring the coaches carrying "..Ram Bhakts and karsewaks.." from Ayodhya. Many commentators have claimed that four coaches of Sabarmati Express was deliberately burnt to stage Hindu Muslim Riots ( Godhra Riots ). After math the riots , Statistics – Official Figures of Number of Muslims and Hindus Dead According to official figures, the riots resulted in the deaths of 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus. Of the 254 Hindus, 251 were SHOT DEAD by RAF Battalions swiftly flown in to control the riots and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi gave SHOOT AT SIGHT Orders to RAF Battalions ( including Paramilitary Personnel and Gujarat Police ) Here I will expose - how Senior BJP / RSS Leaders double crossed Junior Hindutva Leaders and members of Hindu Community during Godhra Riots and then DELIBERATELY had them SHOT DEAD by RAF Battalions.. According to official figures, the Godhra Riots resulted in the deaths of 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus. An estimated 254 Hindus were killed during Godhra Riots , of them at least 251 Hindus were killed during police firing.

Here is how Junior Hindutva Leaders were DOUBLE CROSSED by RSS / SANGH PARIVAR - As Anti Muslim Riots spiraled out of Control ,  by end of March 1st , RAF and Army Battalions were flown in to swiftly contain the violence and a curfew had been declared in 27 towns and cities across the state. A Shoot To Kill order was issued. As a result, a large number of Junior Hindutva Leaders and members of Hindu Community were caught up confronting Heavily Armed RAF and Army Battalions, now guarding Muslim localities. As a result, 251 Hindus were SHOT DEAD by RAF Battalions ( and Gujarat Police). Indians need to remember – of the total 254 Hindus killed during Godhra Violence , 251 Hindus were SHOT DEAD by RAF Battalions and Gujarat Police. This was done deliberately. RAF Battalions were deliberately created by Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government at behest of RSS & SANGH PARIVAR Leaders. RAF Battalions consist mostly of Muslims and Non - Hindus In the end , 251 Hindus were SHOT DEAD by RAF Battalions , who suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Gujarat State Home Minister boasted in front of the media ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Govardhan Zadafia, the Gujarat State Home Minister boasted in front of the media that there would be no more retaliation from the Hindu Community for the train burning and the violence has been contained. Chief Minister Narendra Modi stated that if the situation warranted it, the police would be supported by deploying the army. Loveratri in Trouble! Former VHP member Govind Parashar announces Rs. 2 lakh reward for THRASHING Salman Khan

Almost a week ago, we had reported that the Salman Khan production Loveratri has been facing severe backlash owing to its title. After the Vishva Hindu Parishad had reportedly taken offense to the distortion of a festival name, Navrati, now another organization, Hindu Hi Aage too have expressed their anger. The leader of the religious group has announced a reward for thrashing Salman Khan!

The situation in Gujarat cities has worsened with members of the religious group Hindu Hi Aage taking to roads to burn the posters of Salman Khan. Two weeks before the release of the much awaited Salman film Race 3, the actor’s posters from theatres and multiplexes have now turned into ashes after it faced the wrath of the religious group’s anger.

According to the former Vishva Hindu Parishad member and Hindu Hi Aage leader Govind Parashar, the title of the film, Loveratri is offensive to Hindu sentiments. He has mentioned that the film deliberately being scheduled during Navratri for release too has further fueled up their anger. Owing to the same, he has publicly announced a reward of Rs. 2 lakhs for the ones who can thrash Salman Khan publicly.

The members of his recent cult group Hindu Hi Aage reached Bhagwan Talkies recently and have burnt down posters of Salman Khan and his films. Govind has further gone on to seek a ban of the movie in these reports and has threatened to oppose its release if it gets a green signal to be screened at theatres. He has also asked the CBFC to not certify the film and has further added that if it gets screened in theatres, that would be burnt too.

Loveratri marks the debut of Salman Khan’s brother-in-law Aayush Sharma and model Warina Hussain. The film was shot extensively in Gujarat and is a love story set against the backdrop of Navratri.

notes on the ongoing movement

the people of the subcontinent have raised their voices against the repressive forces that intend to establish the hindu rashtra. women in shaheen bagh, delhi, are holding an indefinite sit-in demonstration against the regressive citizenship laws the state has enacted in the past year, and this has spread to park circus maidan, kolkata, among others. the women leading these protests are largely muslim, and this is both significant and heartening.

what is less heartening is the fact that certain student movements, instead of offering their solidarity, seem to be intent on co-opting this mass mobilization by muslim women into their own, rather narrow, class interests. it is not that student movements are any less important, students stand at the forefront of the war against the nation state, however, the women who are organising are entirely capable of creating their own means and methods of resistance.

while students have been carrying out an endless number of rallies against the CAA/NPR/NRC, it was muslim women who began the sit in demonstrations. they were the ones who re-configured their bodies and the spaces they occupied against the fascist state. rallies are good for awareness raising, no doubt, but the diffused nexus of the neoliberal fascist state requires a re-signification of the body that resists fascism.

the movement at shaheen bagh exemplifies this form of re-signification. women in shaheen bagh, live, work, eat, and sleep on the premises and the state is intent on their unconditional removal. that is exactly why JNU was attacked at the same time as shaheen bagh. shifting the focus of state violence from the women of shaheen bagh to JNU was a strategic move by the nation state. violence on students by state machinery is easier to swallow than violence against women, in fact, the latter is written into the laws of the nation state. it is effectively rendered invisible.

we cannot afford to be swayed by these feeble attempts at drawing attention away from the issue. the issue at hand is that women, especially muslim women, are extremely vulnerable to the ideology of citizenship as it is being deployed by the BJP/RSS/VHP/ABVP. at this moment solidarity against the forces of hinduism is a weapon, one that must be deployed accurately. we have no room for errors at this moment. the students must learn to show solidarity, without assigning excess value to their own traditions of resistance.

this is because at the very heart of the oppression we seek liberation from are issues of class, caste, and sexual difference. and in this, students and women are united in their resistance. we must hold these unities in place as strategic. any differences can be dealt with when the threat of hinduism has been destroyed.

(these musings are largely based on observations at rallies and sit-ins in kolkata, i do not claim to know the situation in delhi, i have only read and heard about it. the condemnation of the attack on JNU should be implicit, but we must remember the attacks on AMU, and JMI as well; muslim universities whose movements have been sidelined due to their large muslim composition)

Opinion: Is news dead in India?

News, it is being said, died in the abominable coverage that ensued superstar Sridevi’s death. I do not agree. News would have to be alive first, for it to die! News, as I know it, as an avid follower and consumer, has been dead for long. It did not die in one shot but died little by little, part by part over past several years.

I have been watching and reading the news right from the time of 1989 General elections. I was in awe of news when I saw the brazen booth capturing of the 1989 Bihar elections, captured on camera by Nalini Singh. I was filled with respect for news when I saw Madhu Trehan brilliantly capture in Newstrack (then available for viewing only on rented video cassettes) the demolition of the disputed structure in Ayodhya in 1992 and its aftermath. Was filled with admiration at the power of news when the Media led the outrage of the nation against the dastardly burning of the Christian Missionary Graham Staines and his two sons in 1999.

The awe and admiration, however, soon began to be dented. The first major dent came in 2002 when 59 people - men, women and children - were burnt alive in a train in Gujarat. The indignation and outrage seen on the burning of 3 people in 1999 was found totally missing from the media narrative even though this time 59 people were burnt alive. Most, if not all, the news establishments, strangely, seemed to underplay the incident and many even seemed to justify the ‘deaths’ alluding to the fact that those burnt alive were all Kar Sevaks returning from Ayodhya – almost as if to suggest that they perhaps deserved to die for being Kar Sevaks or VHP members! One of the then famous editors raised this issue about the media reaction but instead of this leading to introspection, it led to the widespread castigation of this editor. For the first time, it set me thinking if the news was actually news or was it a mere acquiescence and obeisance to an established and entrenched, politically correct narrative.

The next big body blow to news, I saw land in the way many news establishments handled the 2G spectrum scam and in the way the “zero loss theory” was allowed to be peddled in the garb of objectivity and of presenting the view of the other side. The truth of this objectivity lay exposed threadbare in another big blow that was dealt with the entire news establishment in form of the Radia tapes wherein celebrated journalists were caught acting as cheerleaders for corporates and as power brokers for political parties. “What more would be left of news,” or so I thought. 

The final and mortal blow to news, however, came when most of the established media houses almost ganged up to defend the convicted terrorist Yakub Memon – who was responsible for one of the most ghastly attacks that India has seen - and overnight transformed him into a hero who was ‘wronged’ by the nation. Columns after columns in print and anchor after anchor on television, especially of the “secular” kind – prayed and seemed to strengthen the campaign to save this traitor and murderer. 

To talk of saving Yakub was termed liberal, intellectual and magnanimous and that of executing the Supreme Court’s order to hang Yakub to death was treated as a fanatic, jingoistic and communal! This one instance lay to rest all doubts in my mind about news. The news was no longer about disseminating information but was about pushing agendas – personal, political and corporate – even if it meant harming the nation itself in the process. And they hanged news to death with that cringe of a headline “And they hanged Yakub!” The image of thousands of people mourning the death of “Shaheed” Yakub Memon at his funeral is still fresh in public memory – most certainly in my memory. That was the day when I penned the following lines on my facebook page. I had stopped watching news on television and stopped taking the news in print media seriously. 

Is desh ki barbaadi ke liye, ab Dushmano ki zarrorat nahi. Desh ki yeh Media hamaari – Kaam poora kardegi wahi!

(Why does India need any enemies for its destruction, when it has its media which is doing the job of the enemy better than the enemies could even imagine)

Too blunt this is, I know. I also understand that many in media, and I count many friends among them, might take offence to it. But, unfortunately, this is what many news consumers have come to believe off late. 

What remains today of news, even more so on television, is not news but pure political entertainment of a very crass kind. Reclassify the news channels as such and suddenly you might find everything falling into place. The live shallow debates every day, constant screaming at each other, ‘ripping apart’ someone on TV, the reporter laying down in the bathtub, the bathtub of death - all would seem just about appropriate. 

BARC (Broadcast Research Council of India), I suggest, should give a serious thought to the reclassification of news channels as political entertainment channels for the purpose of its TV ratings. Such a step, perhaps, may lead to some rethink and resurrection of ‘News’ into a genre that we can well and truly call news and not #TKHBC (google for this acronym if you don’t get what I am referring to).
