just a compilation of characters that i think would be interesting for this. happy friday the 13th!

𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐋𝐃𝐄 ! (genshin impact.)

After years of training and endless carnage, it's only natural for a person to develop specific tastes for the darker aspects of life. Battle and blood were Childe's bread and butter but due to his friendly and frankly charming exterior no one could tell that the young man was a ruthless killer.

Provided that he hides his Harbinger status that is.

There were times when his status was a hastle but there were always some perks, always some string for him to pull and make everything go in the way he wanted them to go. Sometimes, that would include people.

But now, that included you.

Upon first meeting him there was an addictive and boyish charm to the ginger haired man and he had you completely wrapped around his fingers. His pockets were deep but so was his heart and frankly, how dare you just steal it? How dare you be so careless? Don't get him wrong, he wasn't mad per say but he still wanted to teach you a lesson or two, just to make it all stick to your feeble little mind.

He started with your neighbors first.

Childe watches comfortably from high above, hidden away in a tea shop as natives of Liyue Harbor scamper back to their homes as darkness nears. A serial killer is on the loose and the shop owner in which Childe was in had no idea that he just served the man responsible for the deaths of 3 different families. He sipped his tea with content, his heart pounding with excitement. The blade in his pocket was itching for its next victim but he had to be patient.

Patience was a virtue after all.

And once he was done, he was going to claim his prize.

In the meantime, he was going to be nothing less than a sweet and doting friend who was just worried for you. It was only a matter of time when you would fall into his greedy hands and you didn't even know it.

𝐍𝐈𝐊𝐎𝐋𝐀𝐈 𝐆𝐎𝐆𝐎𝐋 ! (bungo stray dogs.)

Meeting him was not by choice but you were bound by fate, or so the clown liked to tease.

He stopped you on the street in order to show you a card trick. It was simple but it did the job, he impressed you even if just barely. You'd sigh and turn your head but Nikolai did not fail to see the blush on your cheeks.

He was a man on a mission. Why not indulge himself, just for a little bit?

The public always was fond of a good show and why not give them one in the form of a crazy mass murderer? Donning on a mask and a long black cape his escapade began, his ability was so useful for this.

However, you were always his favorite target.

It started out small, at first. He would use his ability to touch you and to steal your things, particularly if he knew you were alone at home. Seeing that confused expression on your face became a past time of his. His fingers would brush against your cheeks, his touch barely there, like a wandering phantom. Sometimes he would be bolder and press his hand gently against your ribs, maybe even be cheeky and smack your behind ever so playfully.

After a few weeks of this song and dance, watching wasn't enough.

You answered his first call, which pleased him greatly. He gave you impossible riddles and forced you to answer humiliating and degrading questions, all under the threat that he was in your house and was going to kill you lest you complied.

Of course, he had no intentions of doing that. Perhaps he would one day. But for now, he would continue to paint the streets crimson with blood and make you squirm in your seat.

It became his reason for living.

𝐊𝐀𝐅𝐊𝐀 & 𝐁𝐋𝐀𝐃𝐄 ! (honkai star rail.)

Ah, these two psychos. Where do I start?

Their plans are at first glance, all over the place. Attacks are random and they do not necessarily always go for the big fish too. Sometimes it's a poor street vendor who was just doing their job but his life meant nothing in the end.

Kafka was the main mastermind. Blade was the one who did most of the dirty work.

Her plans were meticulous, deadly. She would come crawling to you from the shadows, her jacket draped over your shoulders as she'd coo into your ear, her face bloody from her latest victim as she toyed with her mask, a carefree smile on her face. You couldn't see him but Blade was also behind you, his presence was impossible to miss. He was large and imposing, like a phantom that couldn't find peace.

Could you perhaps give him something that he couldn't have? If he can't have you in life, can he have you in death?

There was no escaping them, never ever. Dare to try and there would be consequences.

They were so in love with you to the point of madness. The question was - were they going to keep you alive and leashed or were they just that insane to stab you in the heart?

If they can't have you, no one can.

𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐌 𝐉𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐒 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐘 ! (Moriarty the Patriot.)

The streets of London are filled to the brim with gossip and paranoia as the Lord of Crime made his move the previous evening, slaughtering yet another poor noble in his family home. The papers reported that his own children found the corpse, the poor little things.

You hurried to show William the morning paper, morbidly curious about his opinion on this.

Said man could be found lounging about in a cushy, plush red love seat, a hot cup of tea served in front of him by none other than his brother. The two were lost in their own chatter until you abruptly stopped them. Like a sudden storm you pounced on William, his red eyes widening in shock as he tried to calm you down with a sweet smile on his face. You bombarded him with endless questions - who could do something like this, why was it this messy, was the killer sending a message? - all of it came out at such lightning speed that William didn't really understand half of what you said.

It was wrong to corner him like this and let out your frustrations on the man this early in the morning. You knew every single person that died in these past few weeks, all of which were either minor annoyances or massive obstacles in your day to day life.

When it came down to it, their only connection was with you.

Was the police going to come knocking at your door? It was possible! You had no involvement with the crimes but it was incredibly suspicious how everything was connected, like a spiderweb that was being crafted day by day.

It was difficult for William to keep his smirk concealed that morning.

Hours had passed since that interaction and he was back at it, his new victim. He incorporated the fact that you were most likely going to be incriminated in this scheme but it was still in his best interest. It was not difficult to tamper with evidence and blackmail people if need be and best of all, you would always come running to him, scared and worried, for both yourself and the people around you. It was beyond precious how you tell him to not go after sun down, how you made sure to check to see if he was injured or ill.

If you kept doting him like this, he might just slit the throat of every single person that steps foot into London.

“Oh well since he’s passed out I’ll just have one” you say just as you where about to grab a pocky from a box he woke up and rose like he was a zombie coming back from the dead

“Sorry darling…but no” he said with opened eyes you slowly retreated your hand

“Sorry” and put both hands up in the air (like you just don’t care…sorry)

“….okay one” you looked at him with shock

All in all not much changed in your relationship but you could tell he did help out a bit more when you got monthly pains he helped you out a bit before this whole ordeal but now he was actually giving you some of his snacks and randomly a surprise pocky he’ll shove into your mouth

You Scared Us to Death! (Bungo Stray Dogs)

Primary Universe

Summary: Dazai plays dead to mess with Chuuya, Atsushi, and Akutagawa, but they don't find it as funny as he does.

A/N: I wrote this one a while ago for @ticklygiggles and am now sharing with you all. Dazai is such a loveable dork; he deserves all the tickles! I hope you enjoy. ^^

By the time they got there, Chuuya looked almost frantic. Atsushi’s eyes darted to Dazai, who lay unmoving on the ground, out cold. He knew the punch he’d taken on the rooftop combined with his being thrown off of it moments later was probably enough to knock anyone out, but the way Chuuya’s eyes were wild now made him think something else was wrong.

“Chuuya!” he called as he and Akutagawa jogged to meet him.

The redhead looked up. “The idiot’s not responding!”

“Is he unconscious?” Atsushi asked, kneeling down on Dazai’s other side. The man looked pale; a small gash on his right cheek was bleeding a little and – as Chuuya had said – he wasn’t moving at all. “Dazai?”

Akutagawa stood over the three of them. “Did you catch him in time?” His voice was as detached as ever, but Atsushi could hear the tiniest hint of underlying concern in it.

“Of course I did,” Chuuya snapped, though his frustration clearly wasn’t aimed at Akutagawa specifically. He grabbed Dazai’s shoulders again and shook him a little. “I had him before he was even halfway down. The landing was smooth. He wasn’t even hit that hard up there!” He shook him again. “Dazai, wake up, you moron!”

Atsushi was beginning to panic now, too. Something was definitely off about Dazai’s condition; if he’d been caught long before hitting the ground he should be at least a little responsive, and it was obvious that he wasn’t. “Was he already unconscious when you got to him?”

“Yeah, but he was moaning and moving around. He should be awake by now.” Chuuya’s arms were trembling, but he tried to cover it up by shaking the unconscious detective once more. “Dazai!”

“I don’t think shaking him is going to help,” Atsushi said gently, reaching out to stop Chuuya from doing it again. “Let’s check for a pulse.”

Under normal circumstances, the weretiger would have thought to check his neck or wrist for a heartbeat, but Chuuya beat him to it, and it was obvious he wasn’t thinking quite straight, because he yanked open Dazai’s overcoat and pressed his ear right to his chest.

A split second later, Atsushi was startled by Dazai moving his hand to cup the back of Chuuya’s head and ruffle his hair gently. “Hey, chibi.”

Chuuya shot back up, eyes wide and glaring at the brunette on the ground. “You idiot!”

“I almost died just now, and you’re calling me names?” Dazai mumbled, smiling weakly. “How mean.”

Atsushi leaned forward. “Are you all right? What happened? You scared us to death!”

“I’m not sure. Maybe having my center of gravity changed so abruptly while I was falling to my demise made me pass out.” Dazai hummed contemplatively, darted his gaze to Chuuya, and smirked. “Or maybe I just wanted to mess with you a little. I’ll never tell.”

The weretiger let out a frustrated and relieved huff of air, sitting back. He glanced up at Akutagawa, who looked irritated, then back at Chuuya, who was busy wrapping his hands around Dazai’s throat.

“Chuuya!” Atsushi cried, but the redhead was already retracting his hands, visibly shaking from the desire to do something with all that nervous energy he’d built up in the last few minutes.

“I – you – argh!” The redhead plunged his fingers into Dazai’s ribs and tickled harshly, earning a loud squawk and subsequent giggles from the brunette. “You asshole! I hate you!”

“You…you know he likes being tickled, right?” Atsushi asked cautiously, thrown off by the sudden change in revenge tactic.

“I know!” Chuuya yelled angrily, fighting off Dazai’s flailing limbs. “But this is the only way I won’t kill him! Bastard!”

“Chuhuhuhuhuhuuya was wohohohohorried about me,” Dazai squealed, wincing a little as the cut on his cheek began to burn from his sudden activity. “How cuhuhuhuhuhute~”

At this point, Atsushi’s fear had begun to fade as well, replaced with just as much frustration that he felt the need to take out somehow. Following the redhead’s example, he shifted his arms into their half-weretiger form and grabbed Dazai’s wrists, yanking them above his head to expose his armpits.

Chuuya didn’t need any prompting.

“GAH!! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA NOHOHOHOHOHOHO!!” Dazai screeched, legs scrabbling against the ground as he arched his back and laughed harder than ever, tugging uselessly at his trapped limbs. “MEHEHEHEHEHEHEANIES!!”

“Meanies?! You scared us to death and all you can do is laugh about it,” Atsushi growled, holding him down even tighter. “You’re the meanie here!”

“Weretiger.” Akutagawa’s voice joined the fray for the first time since Dazai’s awakening, and the white-haired man glanced up at him, confused at first by the grim determination in his features. Then Rashomon appeared in two claw-like tendrils from behind him, and Akutagawa said, “Allow me.”

Atsushi blinked, then realized what he wanted to do and nodded, retracting his hands from Dazai’s wrists just in time for Rashomon to take their place, pinning Dazai and leaving Atsushi free to join in another way. He wasted no time, scooting down to grab the brunette’s hips and squeeze, making his boss throw his head back and scream with more frantic laughter now that he had two people tickling the crap out of him.

“GAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! OKAY, OKAHAHAHAHAY, I’M SOHOHOHOHOHORRY!!” he cried, arching and twisting his body as much as he could.

“Don’t lie,” Chuuya snapped. “You’d do it again in a heartbeat if you could.”

Dazai didn’t try to deny it, but he still let out a loud whine and cackled out, “WHAHAHAHAT DO YOU WAHAHAHAHANT ME TO SAHAHAHAHAY?!”

Atsushi glanced up at the redhead, who looked back at him with a firm set to his mouth, and they nodded their agreement.

“Promise you’ll never do that again,” Atsushi demanded, drilling his thumbs into the squishy bits of flesh just above Dazai’s waistline.

“AHAHAHAHAHAHA!! WHIHIHIHIHIHICH PART?!”

“Playing dead!” Atsushi and Chuuya shouted at the same time.

“BUHUHUHUHUHUT IT’S SO FUHUHUHUHUHUN!!” Dazai retorted, suddenly activating his ability to dispel Rashomon’s hold on him, but before he could even think about bringing his arms down, Akutagawa had dropped to his knees and latched onto his wrists with his bare hands, keeping him pinned right where he was. Dazai glanced back at him through his laughter, surprise clearly written on his features.

Akutagawa snorted. “I’m sorry to say you can’t cancel me out, Dazai. Did you really think I’d let you get out of this so easily?”

“AKUTAGAWA YOU TRAHAHAHAHAHAITOR!!” the brunette screeched, laughter going silent for a moment when Chuuya found the hypersensitive spots in the center of his armpits and dug in there with everything he had. He kicked the air uselessly, gasping for breath, the cut on his cheek bleeding more profusely now that he’d been exercising his cheek muscles so thoroughly.

“Promise us, Dazai,” Atsushi warned, swinging a leg over to straddle his boss so he couldn’t even squirm anymore.

Chuuya reached one hand up to scribble against his neck as well as his armpit, and Dazai let out a loud, feminine squeal.

“OKAHAHAY I PROHOHOHOMISE!! I WOHOHOHON’T DO IT AGAHAHAHAHAIN!!” he cried, a snort slipping out of him as he laughed helplessly, tears springing to his eyes. “I SWEAR!! PLEHEHEHEHEHEHEASE!!”

Atsushi hummed his acceptance of his boss’ words, letting up on his attack and climbing off of him. It took Chuuya a few moments longer, but eventually he stopped as well, getting to his feet with a huff. Akutagawa released him and stood back up calmly, stuffing his hands in his pockets as though nothing had happened.

Dazai lay on the ground catching his breath for several moments, a few stray chuckles escaping him. Then he moved to sit up and groaned.

Chuuya rolled his eyes, offering him a hand. “Stop being so dramatic, you idiot—” Then he watched as Dazai seemed to notice he was bleeding for the first time, swiping a hand across his cheek and observing the red droplets that came away on his fingertips before reaching up to take the redhead’s offer of help. Chuuya snatched his hand away. “Ugh, forget it! Get up yourself, stupid Dazai.”

“So mean,” Dazai mumbled, but he was grinning as he got up and brushed himself off. “Hey, chibi?”

“Quit calling me that, you—!” Chuuya stopped his rant when Dazai’s clean hand brushed his cheek softly.

“I am sorry,” the brunette told him sincerely, brushing a thumb along his cheekbone. “Thank you for saving me.”

Chuuya blinked, then swatted his hand away and turned his back in a huff. “Back off! Quit getting yourself into trouble and I won’t have to keep saving your ass.” Then he stomped away, never once looking back, though the red flush on his neck gave him away regardless.

For a long moment, the three remaining men stood watching him leave. Atsushi glanced at Akutagawa at the same time Akutagawa glanced at him. He opened his mouth to thank him for his assistance on the mission, but before any words could escape Rashomon shot out and slammed into his chest, knocking him onto his back before he could blink.

“Hey! What was that for, Akutagawa?!” Atsushi yelped, scrambling to sit up. He watched Akutagawa sauntering away without a word and yelled, “Fine! I’ll keep my thanks, you jerk!”

Dazai laughed, offering his hand to the weretiger, who cringed at the blood smearing the fingertips before his boss realized his mistake and offered the other hand instead, which Atsushi accepted.

“You really are such a pain,” the younger man grumbled under his breath.

Dazai beamed. “Just keeping you on your toes, Atsushi. Now, let’s head back to the agency. Apparently I need to see the good doctor.”

“For a little cut like that?” Atsushi asked as they began to walk the opposite direction from Chuuya and Akutagawa.

“Of course. I figure if I get lucky, one of these days she might actually kill me while trying to save my life. It would be so poetic, don’t you think?”

Atsushi punched him, and Dazai laughed again.

Bungo Stray Dogs: my thoughts

So I'm not caught up on the manga (I'm trying). But I caught up on the anime and

HOLY

SHIT

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually screamed at the second to last ep.

*Spoilers ahead*

I COULDNT HANDLE CHUUYA - AS A "VAMPIRE" - SHOOTING DAZAI. OH MY GOD.

But everything is okay because that's not the case. But I also watched it in Dub (bc I was trying to cruise through it because its been a hot minute since I've caught up on anime) and DAZAI SAID FUCK AND IM LIVING FOR IT! Chuuya too. I was giggling like a maniac when I heard Chuuya say "You fucked up, detective agency!" Then continue to fuck up the Hunting Dogs.

PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME IS TACHIHARA OKAY?!?!? (I swear I'm reading the manga. This weekend I'm planning on reading it all the way.)

Also, I absolutely loved seeing how the agency was formed. What got me was Yosuno and her ties to the mafia. I literally doubletake-d and screamed "WhaT??" and my family thought I was nuts. Maybe I am. Its fine.

But s5 broke my heart and I'm like, over it. I need some Shin Soukoku fighting together again.

Also, can we talk about Ranpoe??? I absolutely love them, and I think they're now my third favourite ship in the series. Behind SSK and SSKK, of course. I dunno if I could see most of the ships. But, no hate to it if you do ship it because I believe we should ship what we want without judgement (FICTIONAL CHARACTERS MEN! FICTIONAL CHARACTERS!), I absolutely despise Fyozai. I just... no.

Though I do think Fyodor was a very cool character—a little boring—but interesting. Especially with his understanding of Dazai's intellect. Now I think the character with the most depth is Ranpo. Like, man's backstory - the little we know, is quite interesting. It makes me think about a lot.

Also, why is the story character based, not world based, when we know so much more about the world than we do the characters?? Like we know a little about a lot of the characters but know a lot about the world. It's insane. I love character based stories because I feel knowing the characters builds the world.

But the most we know is: Atsushi is an abused orphan; Dazai is an ex mafia member; Kenji is scary; Ranpo is an orphan too who is actually gifted with intellect instead of an ability - though it kind of is an ability; Fukuzawa is an ex assassin; Yosuno hates her ability because she was forced by Mori to keep soldiers alive during the gifted war when they just wanted to die; Kunikida is an ex maths teacher; Chuuya is a human that was experimented on so he's basically part yōkai/ayakashi (Thank you Noragami for introducing me to that delightful word—it's basically a word to describe supernatural beings/creatures and lord knows what Chuuya actually is); Tanizaki is... I don't remember anything specific about him and Naomi...; Tachihara is not a mafia member but rather a military officer sworn to get revenge on Yosuno (she didn't do anything except keep his brother alive - poor babies. She was forced to as well, which, in my opinion, makes it worse); Akutagawa is sick (I swear to god if the series ends without him...); Gin is Akutagawa's sister (HC Gin is enby); Mori was an underground doctor before he slit the previous bosses throat.

Like barely anything about a single character. Just bits and pieces for each. Those are just the main ones I remember.

I'm gonna admit up front that I put off touching this series because the title alone was such a turnoff. Happily, it turns out the title has almost nothing to do with the actual story. This is a good series, people, and worth giving time to.

Let's get into it.

First, you may legitimately ask, if the title's deceptive why is it there and what is this REALLY about?

The title is there to give you a beginning. Because yes, this is how it starts; Our Hero is isekai'd with his whole class to another world, and Our Hero is quickly separated from all the others because he's "too weak", having only a few debuff/DOT spells to his name (which in this world almost never work, and when they do, don't work long). But lo! Of course, Our Hero's version is nothing like that, and So Our Journey Begins. Our Hero will take revenge on everyone that cast him aside!

...So that's what you'll see in probably most reviews. It's true, that's basically the first few episodes. Touka (our Hero) is isekai'd, cast aside, left to die, and is justifiably pissed off about it and swears revenge. And women fall for him through the storyline, including The Most Beautiful Woman In The World.

But as with any story, it's not the pieces but how they're put together that really counts. Let me tell you about those.

Firstly...this story is ABOUT abuse. It's about what abuse does to you, what it makes of you (and doesn't make of you). It's about toxic people and how even the best kindest people can be twisted by them. It's about how people get broken, and how some get better and some get worse. If you got into Bungo Stray Dogs because Atsushi or Akutagawa's backstories tugged at your heart, this is very much a story for you.

Touka is a survivor of hellish abuse. His parents didn't want him and did their best to kill him, until neighbors saw what was happening and Touka was placed in the care of his aunt and uncle. From them he learned kindness, and trust, and caring...but he is damaged, as anyone would be. In Touka's case, he's internalized that he is a 'bad person', a cruel person. His parents were both cruel and he is their son, and when they beat him and hurt him he wished them dead. He's very good at spotting abusive/toxic people and he thinks he's like them. This is a constant through the story; Touka 'performs' kindness, or at least thinks he does. He 'performs' being a good person. The story's told from his pov in the light novel, so you can see a lot of his rationalizations about how self-serving his 'goodness' is.

You'll also see a lot of characters tell him he is, in fact, kind. There's a good reason for that, too, that isn't entirely to do with Touka himself.

See, this isekai world is, to put it mildly, FUCKED UP. Top to bottom, it is ROYALLY fucked up.

The Goddess of this isekai - the one that pulls people in, trains the heroes, dictates policy, grants favor, etc? She is the very epitome of a toxic, abusive personality. She's hateful and manipulative and yes, a goddess. Nobody can touch her. Nobody outpowers her. The entirety of this isekai world is stuck between this abusive goddess and "the root of all evil", the demon king that Touka's class was sucked into this to deal with.

Now, most of Touka's class are...not great people. They're mostly not utterly awful, at the start, but they're mostly not great people. (There's like...one or two exceptions. But only one or two.) They're flavors of neglected, of cracked, of hurting. But they get isekai'd straight into this hellworld, where their only real guide is this toxic goddess...Touka is disposed of early on as an example to the others, really. The goddess chooses him (as the apparently weakest summon) to basically make it clear to the rest of the class that this can and will happen to them, too, if they don't pull their weight. That's the kind of world this is.

In a world like that, where power to get away with what you want to do is ALL that matters...there's a lot of very horrible, very powerful people.

The STORY is about how the isekai'd class responds to that world.

Yes, the whole class. Not just Touka. Character development for everybody!

Of course, Touka is Our Hero, so we get a lot of his pov. And how he proceeds, what he sees. Yes, he does wind up with the Most Beautiful Girl In The World (tm) - but man, I love how the story dealt with this.

I mean. Think about it. You're in a hellworld where the local deity rewards the idea of the powerful taking what they want. And you're a beautiful, kind woman.

Life expectancy should be around 0.5 seconds, y'know?

Seras Ashrain is the female lead here. She is so beautiful that anything belonging to her has significant black market value. WARS have been started over her, and over who gets to 'possess' her. She's a prize in the eyes of many. A trophy.

She's also a very sweet young lady, kind and true, and before you go bwuh - think about every twerp of a boy you've ever seen when he's confronted with a beautiful girl. They stutter. They're shy. They Just Want To Talk. Seras Ashrain is a walking catalyst, but spends a lot of the story unaware of it because things happen AROUND her and BECAUSE of her, but almost no one tells her anything to her face. They just want to be liked by her, and be her friend. Except for the ones so powerful that they feel they can skip all that and go right to the rape, but even then she doesn't really see why they're after her.

Touka gets through all this because he's so damaged by events that he flat out does not have time for this bullshit. He takes her in because she's a superb combatant and he needs the fighting skill. And because Seras is a magnet for powerful assholes, he also gets a lot of training in his skills by helping her protect herself.

She falls in love with him because he doesn't try to get in her pants, letting her try to get into his instead. Yes, that's how low the bar is for 'goodness' in this isekai. He's not a rapist, he's not an abuser. Therefore he's a Good Guy.

It's probably important to remember that context. The story doesn't shy away from the fact that Touka can be really ruthless, manipulative, and cold. His survival is on the line and he never, ever forgets that. He can and WILL use everyone around him in service to the greater goal of a) Not dying, b) revenge on the goddess that put him in this spot, and c) getting home. But there's lines he won't cross, and having those lines (at all) is what makes him the better option for a lot of the cast.

I think the best example of this I can give is this: at one point in the story, Touka is seeking a specific witch. They've never met, the witch is in hiding for good reasons, and he knows she's a dark elf. Along this route, he finds out there is a possible guide to the witch, who is connected to a dark elf child, currently enslaved. Pragmatically, sight unseen, he decides to kidnap/free the dark elf child because this will make the witch look more favorably on him after tracking her down. That said, when he MEETS the child, he realizes she's being physically and mentally abused by her owner. (The owner is doing this because the local lord has taken a shine to the slave and wants her broken before teaching her to be a sex slave, but while the owner's doing this under orders it's pretty clear they don't MIND doing this either.) The guide is a good person and doesn't want Extra Trouble. Touka has his own views on the matter. Firstly he is Very Gentle with the slave girl, and very careful of her trauma. Once the slave is removed from the abuser, and safe off with the guide, he kills the owner slowly. (I should point out that owing to the nature of Touka's magic, he doesn't have much choice about that. Some, but not much.) The slaveowner of course uses the time to plead for their life, including "if you kill me you'll go to hell with me, but if you spare me you'll go to heaven".

Touka just laughs. Because of course he's going to hell. There was never any doubt in his mind about that. The slave owner cannot be trusted, therefore cannot be spared. He kills her and tries to make it look like a robbery.

Like I said. This is about abuse, toxicity, and the ways people do or do not survive that. Because not everyone does. Several members of Touka's class don't make it to the final chapters. A few others turn bad, twisted by the way the world around them works. Quite a few wind up pretty damaged.

I started with the anime, and was intrigued enough to go to the light novel. I'd absolutely recommend the series. The anime, being released over time in smaller chunks, might take more patience.

I just finished the Bungo Stray Dogs Beast Manga and holy shit it was so fucking good. (I'm writing this post while it's still fresh in my head LOL)

In the anime = The original universe/world where Dazai leaves the Port Mafia and joins the ADA.

Overall, I have to give the Beast manga a 10/10. I loved reading it so much and it just increased my love for Bungo Stray Dogs 10x more.

The Beast manga really makes you wonder how things could have been so much different. Akutagawa being in the Armed Detective Agency was pretty unexpected for me and Atsushi being in the Port mafia too. I think it only surprised me because I'm so used to their roles being switched because that's how it is in the actual anime.

When I first heard that there's an AU where Dazai is the boss of the Port Mafia, I thought that what would have happened is that Dazai would decide to assasinate Mori and take over and Oda would still be in the Port Mafia so imagine to my surprise when Oda had actually joined the ADA.

When Fukuzawa (Beast Manga) told everyone in the ADA to stop whatever jobs they were taking on and to help Akutagawa, I thought that when Akutagawa had the fight with Atsushi that Yosano would be there to heal the former in case he died or something.

I still have a couple of questions as I'm pretty confused.

Why isn't Kouyou in the Beast manga? We saw that in the anime she cared for Kyouka (I think I don't remember if she did) and how she was basically "helping" (I can't think of another word) Kyouka when she was still in the mafia in the original world. Not to mention, Kouyou is one of the mafia executives. Does she just not exist?

Do the Hunting Dogs exist? We saw that in the anime, Tachihara was secretly the 5th Hunting Dog and how he was sent to infiltrate the mafia. Is he just there as a member without the HD existing or?

What even happened to Chuuya? We just saw him for not even 2 pages and all of a sudden he just dipped.

Since Dazai dies in Beast, does this mean that when he said something along the lines of "If 3 or more people find out about the book" does it still include him? I mean I know that he knows about the book but to the best of my knowledge, he never specified if it included the deceased?

Who is the new boss of the Port Mafia? Since Dazai dies at the end of Beast and it's suddenly revealed how Mori was alive and is the new director of the orphanage, we as the reader are left without the knowledge of who the new boss would be.

What happens to Gin now? Throughout the entire Beast manga, we see how Akutagawa wanted to find his sister (which isn't really true because he's just fueld by revenge) but at the end it's revealed that she "dissapeared". I know this question is probably not going to have an answer but I'm still curious about this myself. At the end of Beast, Akutagawa says that he wants to try to be on the side of good and how he will stop doing evil things (or something like that).

How are all of the events from the anime going to play out in the Beast manga? We saw that Higuchi came to the ADA and informed them of smugglers and stuff just like how it happened in the anime. My only question is what's going to happen next? We saw how in the anime, it's actually a trap and then Atsushi and Akutagawa fight. But we see how in the end Atsushi is in the orphanage with Mori so Atsushi is most likely not going to appear. I really want to know how everything is going to happen but sadly we probably aren't even gonna know.

I really wanted to see what would happen if Asagiri continued the Beast Manga because we would get to see how all the events played out and how the ADA and Akutagawa would deal with Francis/The Guild and Fyodor/The Decay of Angels.

The Beast manga broke my heart though, it was sad to see Atsushi's past.

One of my favorite dynamics in Bungo Stray Dogs is the one between Aya and Bram Stoker.

They’re both incredibly interesting characters in their own right. But they work surprisingly well together, they have an ability to naturally work together that Dazai wishes Atsushi and Akutagawa had /hj. For Bram, someone who is seen either as a monster or as a tool, having someone who genuinely seems to care about his well-being is certainly new to him. Because for someone who claims they have no interest in human affairs whatsoever, it took him all of ten minutes to start helping Aya. I think for Aya, having someone who (as I see it) respects her ability to do things and help is something she craves. Bram doesn’t question her for wanting to do something and help, in fact what he really does is try to help her by giving her information. And then there’s just the aesthetic of the dynamic. A ten year old girl who managed to outsmart a whole ass military general and is committed to saving the world; and the centuries old vampire that just wants to sleep that she stole, who has no interest in human affairs but is perfectly fine helping this small child.

These are just some scenarios I think would be a great addition to the series.

1. Aya gets the mark Fukuchi has on his hand and is able to use Bram’s ability to stop the vampirism.

2. Aya helps get Bram his body back. There are three ways this could go.

2a. Aya gets Bram his body back and then they both beat the shit out of Fukuchi.

2b. Aya gets Bram his body back but is severely injured in the process. I actually like this one more, here’s why. It would be a direct hit to the idea that Bram doesn’t care for other people, because I’m convinced he would be devastated. Thus, he would fight Fukuchi as an act of revenge, and we could see his full vampire powers in his anger. Aya would be healed by Yosano, or something along those lines.

But also imagine the ADA wondering why all of these powerful vampires have been defeated, and Bram walks up to them (with his body back), holding a severely injured Aya, and begs them to help her. The character development.

2c. Aya gets Bram his body back and is mortally wounded in the process. Now hear me out— what if Bram had the ability to just… turn someone into a vampire normally, like himself? Not as a part of his ability but just as an aspect of being a vampire. What if in an effort to save her, Bram turns Aya into a vampire. They both get to fight Fukuchi as vampires.

This is mostly self indulgent because I love the idea of Aya having to be taught by this old ass creature how to be a proper vampire.

Bram: “We sleep in coffins, it’s only natural.”

Aya: “Can I put stickers on it?”

Bram: “…What are these stickers you speak of?”

Aya: “I’m going to decorate it with stickers and glitter.”

3. Bram adopts Aya because Aya’s father is awful to her. Aya deserves better, and Bram actually seems like he’d be a great parental figure. Imagine Aya’s middle school graduation, and this literal vampire shows up like “Yes, this is my adoptive child. I don’t bite, I promise.”

I couldn't help but smirk, leaning into her hand that had rested so gently on my cheek. "I want nothing but Death."

She raised a brow, a somewhat playful smile gracing her pale lips, "Not even the thought reincarnation overrides your want of death?" she asked ever so softly. I looked up to see her bottomless black eyes that were looking into my own. A cold shiver that ran down my body that I embraced came from her looking at me with curiosity held within her eyes.

"Just Death. I don't see what is so significant about this thing we call life, my dear." I playfully replied, setting a beginning ambience to our conversation. She softly laughed as she welcomed me into her cold embrace, "A silly man you are, Dazai Osamu."

And with an irritated smile, Dazai Osamu knew from that point on-- Death isn't going to take him any time sooner.

In which Dazai Osamu gets sent to jail after a partially successful double suicide attempt. The woman died and he lives. What pitiful luck.

What Does It Mean to Save?

I keep seeing it said that Deku, Ochaco, and Shouto will “save” Shigaraki, Himiko, and Dabi, but that there will be no redemption and/or no survival for them. I’m truly not trying to vague these posts and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but literary criticism is fundamentally responsive so I’m writing this anyways.

I personally think that’s not BNHA’s definition of saving nor of redemption. So here, have a deep dive into literary tropes related to redemption, genre, and character arcs as they pertain to BNHA and the question of: what does it mean to save Shigaraki, Touya, and Himiko?

Before we begin, let me say that while we might be personally uncomfortable with redemption (there’s a redemption arc in BNHA I am personally quite uncomfortable with), that doesn’t inherently mean the narrative won’t go there. The key principle I’m operating on here is BNHA’s message that heroes save people. It’s held up as the highest ideal.

So let’s talk redemption in BNHA-verse. With this guy, whose redemption arc I dislike in principle but accept as part of the story so don’t come for me stans and/or antis. I’m analyzing because it shows us what redemption means in BNHA-verse, whether or not that is satisfying to you personally as it fits/does not fit with your own morality/philosophy.

If Endeavor can be redeemed and live, and he’s Bakugou’s negative foil, I highly doubt Shigaraki and Deku as well as Touya and Shouto and Ochaco and Himiko will be any different. Why? Because Enji is an adult character. The others--well, Himiko’s age we don’t know, but we do know that Shigaraki and Dabi are technically adults. But does the story consider them adults?

(It doesn’t.)

Child-coded characters are generally more likely to survive a redemption, which I’ll explain more later. First I have to define what I mean by child-coding, because I DO NOT mean this in the way it’s often (mis)used in fandom wank. Child-coding is a real thing, but it is not done to infantilize and it has nothing to do with shipping.

Child coding frames the character as a child for a few narrative purposes to convey a story’s theme or purpose. For example, if it’s a coming of age story coding a character as a child even if they legally are not emphasizes their journey to an understanding of self-actualization, or a true understanding of self with self-awareness and an understanding of self-value. An example of an adult coded as a child is The Kite Runner, wherein Amir is a legal adult for half the story, even married for fifteen years so we’re talking 30s-40s, but he does not truly become an adult until he returns to his homeland and takes responsibility for a childhood sin. In Attack on Titan, the main characters are now nineteen, but are still struggling to take responsibility as adults and have only started doing so now that their mentors/parental figures have started dying.

Along those lines, in any kind of story, you can code a character as a child of someone, regardless of biological relationship, to convey the type of relationship they have (usually a mentor one). For an example of this, see Bungo Stray Dogs’ Dazai and Akutagawa. Despite their two year age difference, Dazai recruited him to the mafia, abandoned him, and Akutagawa desperately seeks his approval. Usually in these stories a character will “overcome” their parental figure. This can be done through overcoming their need for the parental figure’s approval in stories where the parental figure is kindly (such as in Harry Potter, when in the final book Harry, Ron, and Hermione leave the Weasleys to find the Horcruxes despite Mrs. Weasley’s please) or through like, killing/stopping/leaving the parental figure when they are abusive (see fairy tales like Rapunzel and Cinderella). The parental link to self-actualization is because it is childlike (and a part of actual psychology that is reflected in literature) to see yourself as a part of your parent; self-actualized person would see yourself as a distinct person from your parent, but also acknowledge the ways in which they’ve shaped you.

So, how do you code a character as a child? BNHA isn’t subtle about it, because Horikoshi seldom is subtle about anything. The villain trio are all coded as children.

Shigaraki Tomura:

Who cannot achieve self-actualization so long as AFO has access to his body, as he’s literally trying to possess him. He’s trying, but it’s not gonna work because Shigaraki can’t keep AFO and become an adult at the same time. It’s a choice the narrative is setting up: your dream of destroying, or your freedom? (To get the latter, he’ll probably have to destroy AFO).

Todoroki Touya, who is repeatedly emphasized as a small child when compared to his siblings, and yes, I know he’s now tall. Specifically he’s spotlighted as the child of Endeavor:

And he’s the least self-actualized one in a lot of ways, contradicting himself constantly. I’m not Endeavor, DUH! But these are Endeavor’s flames! He’s gonna have to choose one or the other, because the tragic irony is that the more he takes out his rage on those around him, the more like Endeavor he becomes.

And Toga Himiko (who might well literally be a legal child), who is actually the most self-actualized one thus far, because she rejects Curious’s child insistence (Curious holds her in a Pieta pose, based on Michelangelo’s statue wherein Mary holds a deceased Christ):

Because Himiko also wants to be like the people she loves to the point where she loses her own identity in them, which is er, not self-actualization. So she’ll have to choose whether or not she really wants to be like the people she loves or whether she wants to live her own way, which she herself tells us how that would end (death):

Deku said it himself: it’s good to focus on what someone is doing now. And look, I have issues with this statement and how it’s framed. I’ve talked about it at length and it was doomed to fail because Shouto himself told us long ago that it was annoying to hear a righteous speech by a stranger when you hadn’t gone through the same, plus Endeavor kinda failed by choosing being a hero over a dad here. But, the principle is that if the past doesn’t preclude Endeavor from seeking a better self, why would it preclude three characters coded as children, one of whom is literally somewhat the product of Endeavor’s sins? BNHA doesn’t think the past keeps someone from a better future.

So what about Dabi’s counterpoint, which is indeed valid? Well, redemption doesn’t mean the past forgets, either. It’s complicated and nuanced, and we can debate how well Horikoshi strikes this nuance (it’s got its flaws), and admittedly I don’t know how this will go down in the future. But it is asking Endeavor: how do you redeem yourself to the people you’ve hurt? And we have Endeavor asking this question to Touya’s shrine. I mean, the foreshadowing is obvious. Endeavor has to redeem himself by trying to save Touya. However, it will still probably come down to Shouto to save Touya.

For our three villains, it’s a little harder to predict... well, sort of. For Shigaraki it’s extremely obvious: he has to help take down AFO. Dabi probably has to do something to help his family (siblings probably), but it’s vague. Toga needs help and not condemnation, but presumably she’ll help Ochaco with something.

So, is this redemption? I’d define it as redemption in the eyes of the narrative. To address what makes a redemption is another essay unto itself, but if we bring in the oft-compared Star Wars example: did Darth Vader get a redemption? Did Ben Solo? Everyone says yes to both. However, only Luke witnesses Vader’s redemption, and only Rey Ben Solo’s. So the rest of the galaxy? Doesn’t think so. When I say they’ll be redeemed, I’m defining it as their role in the eyes of the narrative, not whether or not society will accept them or even whether their victims will forgive them (of note, in canonical novels, Leia never forgave Darth Vader despite learning he was her father and obviously knowing Luke’s account of his redemption was true).

So, redemption in a narrative doesn’t mean all of society has to forgive and accept them. Dabi has still like, murdered 30 people--many of whom were thugs, but he himself acknowledges they didn’t deserve to die. Additionally, he himself also acknowledges that the families left behind--their feelings matter:

But why does that mean they have to die? Why even does it mean they have to languish in prison forever? (If there’s even a safe prison at the end of BNHA which I kinda have doubts about.) Heroes have also killed: see Hawks as Exhibit A. In fact, some people want revenge on the heroes precisely because they arrested or killed their loved ones (jail isn’t held up as a rehabilitative place in BNHA’s world. In most countries it isn’t in real life, either, but again that’s for another essay). So why don’t the League’s feelings on Twice’s death matter just as much as the feelings of unnamed and unseen (and thereby less important narratively) characters?

Additionally, regarding death... the villains routinely get called on their death wishes. Himiko’s determination to decide how/when she dies is called out because this is right before Twice overcomes his trauma to save her, and the next arc they appear in is when Twice dies trying to save her again. Dabi’s suicide wish keeps him from getting close to others, and it keeps getting thwarted. Shigaraki’s obsession with destruction and death is clearly not a good thing, and his rejection of his family’s desire for them to join him in death this past arc is growth.

In other words: what Dabi said and what Snatch said about families and how they feel matter for the villains too. The villains are their own weird found family (Dabi as the deadbeat prodigal brother of both his families). Their deaths--Magne’s and Twice’s thus far, and I’m not ruling out further deaths in the future--affect the others. People’s feelings on losing loved ones matter. The villains are people, as Himiko said herself this arc:

How would Touya dying affect the Todorokis? At least they saved him spiritually, I guess, but that’s absolutely lame narratively, and if you have Enji eventually do a sacrifice to save Dabi (pretty likely, even if I personally think Enji will survive said sacrifice) then what’s the point of Dabi dying? How would Himiko dying affect society? As a martyr like Curious wanted her to be, even a redeemed one? A tragic warning story? What even is the point of Ochaco saving her if that’s the case? If Shigaraki dies, well, who would mourn besides Deku? How would Shigaraki dying affect the surviving members of the league? He just couldn’t be saved physically?

It’s not impossible some of this happens, but it doesn’t seem like great writing, especially with panels like, oh, these that show us BNHA’s perspective on death:

Sacrificing something is a type of death that occurs in stories; this should happen in a redemption arc, which is why I’ve been saying Enji needs to sacrifice his hero reputation to help save Touya and even then it’ll still be Shouto imo who does the saving. But physical death?

We already have another villain who will definitely die redemptively (Kurogiri--an adult coded character--because he’s already, like, dead), and Spinner and Mr. Compress aren’t coded as kids so I hold them with anxiety towards the end. But again, this isn’t me being ageist or saying this is the way things ought to be in fiction or real life: it’s me looking at writing tropes and saying that child-coded characters tend to survive their redemptions. See: Zuko. Why? Because the death of children or child-coded characters is a tragedy. When a child-coded character dies redemptively it doesn’t feel like a happy ending and if framed as such, it’s often criticized for bad writing (see: Ben Solo). Curious even called this out in her fight with Himiko. I would hope Horikoshi doesn’t end the story being like yeah Curious was right that’s the best use of Himiko’s/Dabi’s/Shigaraki’s arcs:

Additionally, as for the believability of a character getting a new chance after so much destruction and murder... well, it’s kinda a thing in shonen and even in seinen? For better or for worse, it’s a thing. We have Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z and Kaneki Ken in Tokyo Ghoul (Kaneki, by the way, is absolutely an inspiration for Shigaraki). We can debate how well-written these redemptions are (I personally have been quite critical of Kaneki’s despite wanting it to happen narratively), but it can be done. BNHA’s Japan especially isn’t as harsh a world as Tokyo Ghoul’s Japan, so it would make even more sense for something like Kaneki’s ending.

The reality is that the cycle of revenge via hurting people and then leaving hurting families and loved ones has to stop somewhere. Someone has to be the bigger person and step up and be like “naw.” That’s heroic. That’s brave. That’s sacrificial itself. Justice itself doesn’t really exist in its purest form without mercy.

There’s another genre-reason I don’t see death or jail as likely (I could see, like, maybe a mental health ward like Rei’s? But it’s too soon to speculate).

If saving is considered a good thing for the story, if it’s truly the highest ideal, then saving someone should be rewarded by the narrative. The characters who save should have a positive result to show us this a good thing.

This is why it doesn’t work for the heroes’ end journey to be accepting that some people cannot be saved. The notion of just accepting that you cannot do something, you cannot save everyone, you cannot, cannot, cannot, is called out as a flaw of society. Determination, on the other hand, is rewarded.

We see it with Deku as well as with Mirio.

So, what if they save them and the redeemed characters then go on to sacrifice themselves in their redemption and die (come to the same end)? If saving changes absolutely nothing for the saved person, if it’s too late for the saved from themselves to change and/or do anything that matters besides die, then the narrative theme of saving as important is left unemphasized at best and undermined at worst. Simple intrinsic knowledge that the kids “did the right thing” doesn’t cut it for a story with so much focus on physical saving when the kids are already doing the right thing; moral struggles about whether to choose to be good aren’t really Deku, Ochaco, or Shouto’s arcs. It works for Aizawa’s arc with Kurogiri, but not for the kiddos. If BNHA was more of a philosophical/spiritual text, that would indeed make sense, but it is not. Genre-wise, BNHA is a fantastical superhero optimistic story, not a gritty real-world set drama.

It's time for a story by Izumi Miyamura. Before I start, I want to say that this is my first time writing something on tumblr, so if it gets bad, sorry.

Izumi Miyamura- Sweets and Savory. Surprise!

Miyamura was coming home from school after a rather complicated day, Y/n, his girlfriend, was feeling bad and couldn't go with him, so it was much more difficult, not only to hide the piercings and tattoos, but also because already she was used to the girl's company.

After a few minutes he finally arrived home, slowly opening the door so as not to make a noise and waking his girlfriend up if she was sleeping (You two live together), but was surprised when he heard a piano song (Rainbow-Liz Huett), accompanied by a wonderful smell, it was a light mixture of sweet and salty.

He walked to the place and found the girl wearing his black blouse, denim shorts, a blue apron and her beautiful hair tied up in a bun. She was calmly stirring something in a pot while humming the music coming from her cell phone.

Miyamura- Babe?

Y/n- Hmm? Ah! Miya, you're finally back!- excited the girl came to him and hugged him putting her arms around his neck- I'm feeling much better, so I finished some activities and decided to cook a little

A little? Y/n had cooked so much, to the point of filling the table! The object was full of foods with wonderful appearances and smells, being perfectly separated between sweet and savory.

Miyamra- Wow, they look really good! I'm going to take a shower and I'll be right back- He says smiling and kissing his girlfriend on the forehead

Every day he wondered what he had done to have S/n as his girlfriend, he was a lucky boy, and he thanked god for that. His girlfriend was sweet, patient, always willing to help everyone and was very sweet and popular in high school, she was perfect for him. But like everyone else, she also has her problems

He lost his parents in a murder that happened in his house. They were secret agents and had many enemies, one of them was a mob boss known for having already killed thousands of FBI agents, he wanted revenge for having arrested his wife. So in one night, he sent his subordinates to the family home and there they started the massacre. They lived in a Japanese-style house, and S/n was playing in the backyard when she heard a noise, ran into the living room and found everyone dead and her parents seriously injured. His father was already dead, only his mother had time to say goodbye (The same death scene of Kyouka's parents from Bungo Stray Dogs):

Y/n- M-Mommy, D-Daddy?

Mother- Dear... we didn't want to get you into this, so please... run away, soon more subordinates will arrive and they will want revenge again, run to the police and call them... save yourself

Y/n- M-Mommy...

Mother- Mommy loves you, me and your father will always be watching you... until someday, my princess

Flashback off

Miyamura is afraid that something will happen to her, it would be too much suffering

Y/n- Miya? It's all right? It's taking a while- he yelled from downstairs

Miyamura- I'm going!

When he arrived in the living room, he saw that there were a few more things, he was starving and he knew the cooking skills of his little girl.

Y/n- Hope you like it, I think there will be a lot left, so I'll keep some things, others we can donate to homeless people, what do you think?

Miyamura- As always, you thinking about others, I think it's a great idea, tomorrow we'll do it. Now let's eat! I'm starving.

Y/n- hahaha, hai hai

After eating all the kinds you can imagine, Miyamura helped Y/n with the dishes and went to the bedroom to rest.

Y/n lay down on Miyamura's chest, receiving a pat on her hair and several kisses on her cheek. The night was summed up in caresses and sweet words until they fell asleep, they were very lucky to have each other.
