One of the worst things about growing older in fandom is that sometimes you go back to an old, once upon a time much-reread favorite fanfic, hoping to enjoy yourself as much as you did years prior...
and then as you start reading, you realize the fic is... not good? Or just, not as good as you recall. And you keep hoping it'll get better as it goes on, but the superficial plot and contrived encounters and unrealistic dialogue just take you out of it again and again until you can only give up?
Anyway. Urgh.
#brought to you by me trying to reread some old LOTR/Hobbit faves#in part it's because I'm no longer really active in the fandom#so the hype isn't coloring my opinion anymore#and fanservice isn't cutting it#and I appear to want a story to draw me in on its own merits?#AKA: I'm becoming a cranky old curmudgeon#I feel like such a snob#reading a fic that I *know* I used to love#going all “what was I on -this is incredibly amateur?”#Like... bro.
