2018 Favorites & 2019 Predictions: Ones To Watch Staff Picks

WHAT. A. YEAR. While 2018 wasn’t exactly the proudest year in American history, there were quite a number of impressive strides in the musical realm. Ones To Watch had our best year yet, and we want to send a special thank you to all the devoted music fans who have utilized our platform to dig up the most promising up & coming artists this year.

Some Music I Loved in 2021

I'll say this about 2021, it sure beat 2020. Live music made the comeback of the century, and I remain incredibly grateful for the handful of shows I was able to see this year thanks to the magical combination of mRNA vaccines and sturdy masks. Standing in a room full of strangers, jostled by elbows and jolted toward transcendence by a simultaneous experience of art — still underrated, even now, somehow. Three of the best performances I saw this year were from Lucy Dacus, who slayed whether she was playing an opening set in broad daylight at a tennis stadium, entertaining a small group of fans at a barn in the Catskills, or triumphantly headlining Brooklyn Steel. Her songs sounded pretty great at home, too: Home Video is the record she's been building toward since her debut nearly six years ago, a stunning act of literary memory and rock & roll salvation. The rest of my list is largely made up of favorites from the last decade who hit new highs (Courtney Barnett, Snail Mail, Dawn Richard), newer acts whose debuts took me by surprise (Olivia Rodrigo, Pom Pom Squad, Lil Nas X), and others I kept returning to when I needed to hear something real. It was an unusually strong year, as many have noted, with many credible contenders for the higher spots, and it pained me to leave Arlo Parks, Japanese Breakfast, and Dry Cleaning out of the top 10. These are good problems to have. See you at the gig.

Συναυλίες

Αφού ξεπεράσαμε το σκόπελο των εισιτηρίων, μιας και προστέθηκε και 3η συναυλία, γιατί όπως είπε η ίδια, "οι Ελληνες δεν παίρνετε από όχι", η Florence ανέβηκε στη σκηνή του κλειστού στο Γαλάτσι κυριευμένη μάλλον από διονυσιακή μανία. Ένα αερικό με ευαισθησία, πάθος, χιούμορ, άποψη και τσαγανό. Μια εξαιρετική φωνή. Μια ΑΠΙΣΤΕΥΤΗ ενέργεια πάνω στη σκηνή. Το live της χρονιάς.

Επίσης, επειδή οι αδυναμίες είναι αδυναμίες, δεν ξεχνώ και την livάρα της Beth Hart στο Θέατρο Βράχων...

Διασκευές 

Οι Highwomen, το country supergroup των Brandi Carlie, Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby και Amanda Shires, διασκεύασαν για τις ανάγκες της ταινίας "The Kitchen" την τραγουδάρα των Fleetwood Mac. Εδώ με τον Jimmy Fallon...

YΓ. Οι Highwomen έβγαλαν ένα από τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα albums της χρονιάς.

Η Fiona Apple διασκεύασε Waterboys για τις ανάγκες του φινάλε του The Affair, ντύνοντας μουσικά μια ωραία στιγμή μιας κατά τ'αλλά μέτριας -τελευταίας- σεζόν.

Ο Richard Hawley διασκευάζει Bob Dylan για τις ανάγκες του Peaky Blinders.

Ταινίες

Marriage Story Θα επέλεγα το Joker με τη σπουδαία ερμηνεία του Joaquin Phoenix, αλλά μετά είδα την ταινία του Noah Baumbach. Μια ταινία απλή, μετρημένη μα ουσιαστική χωρίς υπερβολές. Όσο περνάει ο καιρός την εκτιμώ όλο και περισσότερο, καθώς νομίζω πως πρόκειται για το Krammer Vs. Krammer της γενιάς μου. Οσκαρικού επιπέδου οι Adam Driver και Scarlett Johansson, αλλά και η Laura Dern, με αυτό το ξέσπασμα εναντίον της πατριαρχίας...

Επίσης: -Joker (Ανατριχιαστικά επίκαιρη, Joaquin Phoenix, μην τα ξαναλέμε, στοιχειωτικό soundtrack από την Hildur Guðnadóttir, η οποία έχει φοβερή έμπνευση φέτος, βλέπε Chernobyl.) -Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (O Tarantino είναι σταθερή αξία) -The Irishman (To έπος του Martin Scorsese, στο οποίο δεν ξέρεις ποιον να πρωτοδιαλέξεις ερμηνευτικά.) -Parasite (Η έκπληξη της χρονιάς.)

Το HBO παρέδωσε (ξανά) σπουδαία τηλεόραση, βασισμένη στο ομότιτλο βιβλίο της Σβετλάνα Αλεξίεβιτς (Εκδ. Πατάκη), ντυμένη με την εξαιρετική μουσική της Hildur Guðnadóttir. Σε πέντε ώρες το Chernobyl απέδωσε με μοναδικό τρόπο και αισθητική τη φρίκη του πυρηνικού ατυχήματος, σε συνδυασμό με τη "φρίκη" των ψεμάτων της ολιγωρίας και της ευθυνοφοβίας. Εξαιρετικοί οι Jared Harris & Stellan Skarsgård.

-When They See Us (Netflix) -Mr. Robot (4η σεζόν) (USA) To 4x07 ήταν αριστούργημα. -What We Do In The Shadows (FXX) H κωμωδία της χρονιάς, βασισμένη στην ομώνυμη ταινία του 2014. - The Morning Show (Apple+) Εξαιρετική η Jennifer Aniston.

Βιβλίο

Η συγκλονιστική" Πατρίδα" του Fernando Aramburu ( Εκδόσεις Πατάκη), ένα βιβλίο χείμαρρος για τις εμφύλιες πληγές, το διχασμό, την τρομοκρατία, τη λήθη, την απώλεια, μα πάνω απ' όλα τη μετάνοια και τη συγχώρεση. Ελπίζω να μείνει κλασικό... Επίσης:

-Η παρακαταθήκη του Stephn Hawking στις "Σύντομες απαντήσεις στα μεγάλα ερωτήματα" (Πατάκης). -Η ιστορία ενηλικίωσης της Κάια στο "Εκεί που τραγουδάνε οι Καραβίδες" της Delia Owens (ΔΩΜΑ). Στο ΔΩΜΑ κάνουν σπουδαία δουλειά, είτε πρόκειται για τις Καραβίδες, είτε για το "Ηπειρώτικο Μοιρολόι", είτε για το -εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρον "Τραγούδι του Χιλμπίλη", χαίρομαι να πιάνω βιβλίο τους στα χέρια μου. - Η "Αγαπημένη" της Toni Morrison (Παπαδόπουλος) Είναι απόλαυση να διαβάζεις μεταφράσεις της Κατερίνας Σχινά. -O "Γαλατάς" της Anna Burns (Gutenberg) To Booker του 2018.

"Not me, that's for sure!" Booker threw his head back, giving a dramatic, poised fake laugh at his own words. Time was strange, because it felt like it couldn't have been more than a week since he'd last seen her and yet, at the same time, it could have been more than just two years. The longing always came rushing back when he saw her, though, that would never change. It was instinct, like his brain was wired that way, tempted to immediately ask if she was seeing someone, to smile at her a little too long. At least joking with her was fun. "A grandmother! I always knew you'd be a GILF, but this early? Congratulations." He said, still wearing his persona as he tugged at his cardigan, giving her a grin. Booker softened as she dropped the character, providing honesty that was met with a shrug. "Missed it. And my mother would have killed me if I missed the holidays again. I hate making them pay for the trip, but if I didn't she would have used the combined amount I didn't let her spend to have someone kidnap me." And he'd been curious, about home. Maybe even about Phoebe. "How've you been?"
