one of my favorite character arcs is for sure the "I did a minor bad thing to progress, but My Goal is worth it. Okay now I can't back out bc it's the only way to make my first mistake Pay Off, now I've got to do [unspeakable tragedy 1] to ensure it happens. Uh oh it's still not happening I need to do [unspeakable tragedy 2] so it happens For Sure now that we're in deep. [unspeakable tragedy 3] did get me to my Goal but now I have to trash that and do Goal But Better to fix all that other stuff too. what do you mean [unspeakable tragedy 4]- anything goes and nothing is a tragedy bc Better Better (Most Optimal) Goal will Fix Everything. Nooo this isn't ends justify the means, that's for losers, this is obtaining the Perfect Outcome. Which is where everything including the means is Perfect, as the Perfectest End will retroactively retcon the means Perfect and Not Harmful. So I know I was just trying to buy onions, but now I have to Become God. What do you mean that will never happen and even if it did temporary harm is still harm and killing myself won't fix it either"
you go sunk cost fallacy girl wooooo
#holding fist full of Val the silt verses and [redacted spoilers for animeonly] dungeon meshi and My Ocs and wait so many tsv characters tbh-#guess what I just caught up on lol#suicide mention#bonus points if 'I have to complete Original Goal' was the only reason they didn't kill themselves before all that#bonus bonus points (tho the opposite direction can be equally fun) if it was more about finding more reasons not to kill themselves#than because they cared all that much about the New Goals. until working towards those new goals got them way too deep to get out
