Jon Mckiel — Hex (You’ve Changed)

Jon Mckiel treats songs like miniature epics, rendering each detail in glowing, psychedelic hues. Though the basic framework of his music may be familiar, the feeling is perpetually off-kilter. On 2020’s Bobby Joe Hope — which I would have written about for Dusted’s Slept Ons in early 2021 if I’d have discovered it early enough — Mckiel combined the often mutually exclusive worlds of songwriting and sampling into a unique and beguiling brew. This knack for the uncanny continues on Hex, which feels even more kaleidoscopic.

Mckiel and co-producer Jay Crocker understand how peripheral details, such as backing vocals and percussion, can transform a song from good to great. Take “String,” for example, which begins with a disorientating and scratchy guitar loop. Next comes swirling synth arpeggios, then multi-tracked vocals, plus multiple rhythm guitar and percussion layers. The songform seems to warp and bend in real-time, an endlessly malleable resource. Best comparison is Olivia Tremor Control reined in, and Mckiel’s voice falls somewhere along the continuum between fellow Canadians Andy Shauf and The New Pornographers’ Carl Newman.

On one end of Hex’s musical spectrum we have “Concrete Sea,” a spare acoustic cover of a 1972 song by Terry Jacks, rendered simply with a smattering of slide guitar and percussion. At the other end we have “Memory Screen, pt. 2,” which begins as a gently wavering bedroom pop song, before unspooling into three-and-a-half minutes of spacious, swooshing ambient. In between there’s the fantastically groovy title track, an addictive slice of dusty, retro sampladelia with a gorgeous saxophone solo; “Still Life,” which features a long, tropical-sounding instrumental introduction that could almost be off a dub record; and the gorgeous “Everlee,” which harks back to the 1960s sun-shining tunefulness of Bobby Joe Hope’s“Deeper Shade.”

In Hex’s 34 minutes Mckiel ventures far and wide, but always brings you back to the strangeness of seeing something familiar in a new light, wondering at the possibilities.

Briella’s Winterfest Baking 4: Thumbprint Cookies

Sul Sul, Gerbits. Today we are going to be making what people tell me are the best cookies. This cookie is from an old cookbook that my mom had. I am the type of sim who likes old recipes as well as recipes that I can find on Simtrest. The recipe that we are going to be making today is Thumbprint cookies.

Before you get your ingredients together, feel free to preheat your oven to 350. When you are done with forming the cookies, you can just put them in the oven. 

The ingredients you are going to need for this recipe are:

half shortening and half butter or margarine

packed brown sugar

1 egg separated

vanilla

all-purpose flour

salt

walnuts

If you are going to make these cookies with a cookie scoop, make sure you double the recipe. These cookies are to-die-for. 

The first thing to do for these cookies is you are going to mix the shortening plus butter, sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla thoroughly. Most people have a standing mixer for all these cookies, however, I use a hand mixer. It is easy to use, and it helps mix things faster. 

I was looking at the comments for the last video, and someone asked: “How was it growing up in the Ponder household?” Well, *nervous laugh* I never really asked for anything, because I usually had what I wanted. 

Being the daughter of a top singer and top actress was interesting. Because everyone saw me and my siblings grow up. My parents had a strict rule for the fans, no pictures in our home. There were pictures of Bobbie and me at the playground a couple of times. The pictures were always very family-friendly. 

I don’t want to sound syrupy but I had a good childhood. I was very loved and protected. It is well known that I did protect my siblings. 

Okay, back to the recipe. Blend the salt and flour, measure this mixture by using a sifter.  

Roll the dough into balls at least 1 tablespoon.

 I have read SO many recipes in my time. I still get confused over Tablespoons and teaspoons. Because the measurements for the two of them are so similar. But something that I found, is that if a recipe just has a capital T or Tbsp, then that means it is a tablespoon, and tsp or t is a teaspoon. 

You have the egg yolk on the side and the chopped nuts of your choice. You are going to roll the dough in the egg yolk, and then the nuts. 

Place these cookies about 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Press your thumb GENTLY in the center of each. 

Bake these cookies for about 10 to 12 minutes. If you preheat your oven at the start of this recipe, then you would probably only need 10 minutes. But because no two stoves are the same, you want to make sure that they are done. Even if you need those extra two minutes. 

Once the cookies are cooled, fill them with jelly. I filled them with orange marmalade and they were so good. But, you can choose whatever jelly you want to use. I hope you liked this recipe, and I hope you come back tomorrow for a different recipe. Vadish, Dag Dag.

once again this "dracula AU" business is just an excuse to picture the gang from the mid-24th century (where everything's grimy and fashion isn't a thing) in fun and sexy historical outfits (historically accurate, of course, and all the hotter for it) but i just realized that if one translated bobbie as quincey, there's a really funny option for both having some analogue to her power armor and dealing with the "quincey goes outside and shoots a bat that may or may not be dracula" scene.

picture it, the godalming house, 189X, a strange bunch of gorgeous people are plotting against an evil, immortal nobleman who drinks blood, when one of them, the handsome cowboy bobbie morris, stands up, orders everyone to get on the ground and not get up until she returns, and leaves the room. there's a lot of stuff being moved around in the other room. she walks out with something so heavy it seems to shake the entire building as she moves. nobody sees it. it's Something.

moments later, there's a horrible grinding sound, followed by bullets hitting the side of the house, shattering every window, and the aforementioned cowboy screaming "DIE MONSTER! YOU DON'T BELONG IN THIS WORLD!" over the din.

mrs. naomi harker is the first to look outside when the noise stops, and she nearly faints, looking like the proverbial romance novel heroine clutching her heaving bosom and smiling. everyone else looks, and sees morris running around after a bat with one of these.

she's packing serious heat. she's got that newfangled gatling with the crocker-wheeler motor attachment.

Smile, my Marvel & Haven fusion fic ft. Clint Barton/Duke Crocker post-Avengers 2012 (and then post-S5E14). Purely self-indulgent, perfect length fic for me, lovely balance of angst, fluff, and a little bit of crack.

The Future Still Remains Our Own, high school AU that will eventually be a Percy Jackson crossover/fusion ft. some extra angsty Bucky and Clint and less angsty Steve and Natasha. ALSO very self-indulgent, still a WIP but I know where the story's going. fun fact this was originally all OC's when I started coming up with it 10+ years ago, which is why some of the character traits and history are a little funky vs canon

Still Breathing, inspired by one of my very favorite Clint background fics. This one and the storyline in #2 are the reasons I started writing fanfic!!

Defrosted, a post CATWS recovery fic ft. Bucky, Bobbi, and Clint. ended up fluffier than expected and has several of my own life tidbits in it :D (bonus fun fact, all 5 chapters have the same wordcount due to @noxnthea's influence lol)

I was tagged to post the first lines of your last 10 fics posted to AO3, and I'm curious what this will look like, so here we go...

Dean woke up with a groggy head, sore wrists and a complete inability to move. (Exactly Like a Men Of Letters Move, SPN, Rated E)

Dean drove the Impala into his assigned parking space in the massive underground lot. Its familiar growl was cut through with a disquieting rattle that made him frown: the repairs he'd made at the side of a dusty road a few hours before would need some further work before he got back out on the road again. (Bit of Rough, SPN, rated M)

Duke Crocker had never had much of a regular sleep schedule. (Watched His Lovers Sleep, Haven, rated T)

This is a story that differs only a little from the original. Or rather, which differs a lot, but only in one specific way. (A Miracle Powered by Centuries of Troubled Aether, Haven, rated T)

The Troubles set Nathan up to fail, long before he ever heard of a woman called Audrey Parker. They set him up to fail in ways he didn’t even know about; from his own family history to what his father knew was coming, and simply the way the Troubles work. (This is not a fic as such but rather some meta about Haven, rated T)

"Why do I always go for the shy ones?" Something in her voice makes me turn around, and something in the view makes me not want to leave. (Somehow The Same, Haven. I've just been working on the next chapter for this! Currently rated T, though that might change.)

Honorary mention for the last thing I updated; Everyone I know lives here (hoping to update this one soon too): It was one of those rare quiet days in the bunker where there was no imminent apocalypse, no one they knew was in immediate danger, and no obvious case-worthy news stories had presented themselves. The building was relatively full, though even when all of its semi-permanent residents were at home still only a fraction of the bedrooms were occupied. (SPN/Buffy crossover, rated M)

Hey Ariel!

Since you know a lot about X-Men ships and romance, I figured you could help me out with this.

So I'm currently working on another fanfiction titled "Spider-Man: Family Values".

The series focused on the adventures of the friendly neighborhood wall crawler as literally what everyone on the planet has been asking for him to be: a husband and a father.

Accompanied by his 5-year old daughter Mayday, along with Shadow Spider (Miles), Venom, Agent Anti-Venom, Silk and Black Cat, Spidey finds him going on all kinds of adventures with the faces of the much greater Marvel Universe.

Basically, it's kinda like Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

And among his most recurring allies, would be none other than The X-Men.

As for their status in this world, they've actually made progress in furthering human-mutant relations.

And they've even made the Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters available for human students now.

But just like Peter, a lot of them have gotten with a special someone, tied the knot, and/or started a family (among their already large family).

As for the team themselves, it consists of….

-Cyclops -Storm -Wolverine -Jean -Beast -Rogue -Gambit -Jubilee -Nightcrawler -Colossus -Iceman -Psylocke -Angel -Emma Frost -Shadowcat -Bishop -Firestar -Morph -Chat (who was an original character from the Marvel Adventures comics)

As for the couples I already have planned, these include: Scott x Jean, Rogue x Remy, and Kitty x Illyana.

Scott and Jean are married and have a son in the form of Nathan.

And I must emphasize this…..

Nathan is Scott and Jean's CHILD!

Not the child between Scott and a clone of Jean.

Also, Nathan will actually get to grow up with his parents instead of being sent to the future.

Rogue and Remy are also married, with Remy expressing interest in having kids.

And Kitty and Illyana are just dating.

As for everyone else….

Ororo would either be with Wren (who just like NM, is a female), Thor or Valkyrie.

As for Wren, besides Ororo, she would be with either Kurt, Betsy or Chat.

And speaking of Thor, besides Ororo, I thought of pairing him with either Jane Foster or Sif.

Logan would be with either Morph or Mariko.

As for Morph, it would have to be Logan.

Henry would either be with Abigail Brand, Cecelia Reyes, Carly Crocker or Emma.

As for Emma, besides Henry, she would be with either Piotr, Betsy or Chat.

As for Piotr, besides Emma, he would be with either Bobby or Lorna.

As for Betsy, besides Emma, she would be with Wren.

Bobby, besides Piotr, would probably be with The Human Torch.

Kurt, besides Wren, would probably be with Cerise or Pietro.

Speaking of Pietro, besides Kurt, he would probably be with Crystal (who I thought of pairing with Torch).

Chat would definitely be with either Wren or Emma.

Angelica would either be with Marvel Boy or Lorna.

And finally for Bishop….I honestly connect think of any love interest for him.

So I may have him be asexual in this series.

But anyway, for the X-Men I gave pairing choices for, who do you think would be the best option for them?

The Inhumans overall are terrible news, but Crystal specially, if you already find the love triangles annoying, Crystal will give you an aneurism: You know the character who can't live with stability and always searches for drama to make their lives more exciting, in the proccess hurting the people around who care about them?

That is Crystal, the poster for that type of character! Her marriage to Pietro (which happened after Crystal cheated on Johnny with a wounded Pietro) was awful, with him constantly trying to impress her family, only for her to cheat on him because "he isn't giving him and her daughter enough attention", and the two getting forced to be together because she is from a royal family that frowns on divorce as scandalous before (finally) getting a divorce.

He was close to Avalanche in some encarnations (mainly Evolution and Wolverine and the X Men), so they have potential as a coupling with a dynamic inspired by the Bishop and Rook of Chess Games: Pietro as the Bishop who can move diagonally, Avalanche as the heavy Tower who has movements limited to horizontal or vertical without jumping.

Since Next Mutation already explores the Wren/Ororo pairing, here in family values you can explore the Wren/Betsy pairing.

In the Exiles, Morph had romantic feelings for a version of Mariko (who was from an alternative timeline where she was a mutant with the powers of her cousin Shiro), so I can see Logan, Mariko and Morph in an open polyamorous relationship, raising Jubilee as their child.

Pyro is the Human Torch of the X-Men, and he can be a great pairing for Iceman (Bobby).

In this continuity, making it more distinctive from the Animated Series/Further Adventures/97, Hank McCoy and Cecília Reyes are great characters to explore as a stable married couple who connected trough their love of science and helping others, with one being an adventurous field hero and the other favoring to stay in guard as a medic (and I also can collaborate with you in helping to create a kid for them).

Ariana DeBose could be a great inspiration for Cecília's design:

I can see Piotr and Lorna having a dynamic where he was her bodyguard and she fell in love with him while showing she could be his equal partner in battle rather than always having to be protected.

Can I also suggest exploring Kurt and Ororo as a couple? Dave Cockrum would surely enjoy the idea...

Bonus: give Nightcrawler a costume inspired by his Uncanny Spider Man uniform.

KEVIN DOBSON

March 18, 1943 – September 6, 2020 (77)

Kevin Patrick Dobson was a film and television actor, who is primarily known for his roles on television. Before pursuing an acting career, Dobson worked as a trainman, brakeman and conductor for the Long Island Rail Road, followed by a few years as a waiter, then bartender, at Manhattan restaurant Brew's, owned by relatives. After a brief appearance in the 1971 film Klute and small acting roles on TV series such as The Mod Squad, Emergency! and Cannon, Dobson won the role of Lt. Theo Kojak's young partner, Det. Bobby Crocker, on the TV series Kojak, opposite Telly Savalas, after he signed a contract with Universal Studios in 1972. He remained with Kojak for its entire run from 1973 to 1978, and later reunited with Savalas for the 1990 TV movie, Kojak: It's Always Something, his character having become an assistant district attorney. Dobson starred in the Tony Award winning play 'Art' at the Royal George Theater in Chicago. He originated the role of Steve Gallop in the world premiere of the American Theatre Critics Association-nominated stage play "If it was Easy..." at The 7Stages Theater in Atlanta, Georgia, among other stage roles across the country.

In 1976, he appeared in the World War II film Midway, starring Henry Fonda and Charlton Heston, Dobson played the nonfictional character of Ensign George Gay. In 1978 he played Pete Lomas in the two-part TV movie The Immigrants, based on Howard Fast's novel. During 1981 and 1982, Dobson starred as the title character of the CBS series Shannon. Also in 1981 he played a lead role in the movie All Night Long, playing the husband of Barbra Streisand. The following season, he starred in the role of M. Patrick "Mack" MacKenzie on Knots Landing, cast opposite Michele Lee, and he played the role for 11 years. He later reunited with his Knots Landing co-stars for a miniseries, Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac in 1997, and again in the 2005 special Knots Landing Reunion: Together Again. Dobson also appeared on the syndicated F/X: The Series for one season, playing Detective Leo McCarthy in 1996 and 1997, and on the hit daytime drama series One Life to Live and The Bold and the Beautiful.

Dobson starred with Richard Thomas in the 2009 stage production of 12 Angry Men. He played Mickey Horton on Days of Our Lives from April 2008 to October 2, 2008. In 2014, he appeared in the sitcom Anger Management as Dr. Cameron. Dobson, a former soldier, served twice as chairman of the National Salute To Hospitalized Veterans. Having long assisted with the needs of hospitalized veterans, Dobson received the Silver Helmet Peace Award and the American Legion Award.

Dobson married his wife, Susan, in 1968. They had three children: Mariah, Patrick and Sean. He was the chairman of the United Veterans Council of San Joaquin County (UVCSJC). Dobson died after struggling with an autoimmune deficiency. He was 77.
