#MondayMotivation #BHM #BlackHistoryIsGlobal ... Since we are given an extra day in a leap year to close out #BHM - be mindful in this reminder by the great Steve Biko! Change can only come when our minds are truly free and not seeking a seat at table that another built and validation from others. I had a conversation the other day about a group organizing a Black History Month for all the expats/Repats from the USA and UK who now call Ghana home. It was not well received because first of all 1 had to decide if it would be celebrated at the time of the USA one or the the UK one, which are celebrated at different times of the year. And then of course the elephant in the room that Ghana is an African nation with a majority Black population so its Black history is a 365 days , 7 days a week reality that is just called history. But much like the Black History Months celebrated in USA and UK that are more about the national history of Black in relation to their white counterparts that often does not include Africa; in African nations the 365/7 history of nations often also do not include the Diaspora - so how do we find common ground in our collective history without imposing on our individual and national realities? #OurGlobalFusion

The CIA backed coup in Ghana was part of a Cold War conflict of the times as President Nkrumah was seen as an ally of Soviet Union and Eastern Europe" - Today the decapitated body of Dr.Nkrumah stands in memoriam as a symbol of Ghana's Brain-Trust downfall, while Ghana's international airport is named after the man who deferred Ghana's dreams at a time when its 1st president became the 1st democratically elected Black African president to have a seat at the global table from East to West, as he spoke the words into the mantra of his nation with ..." "Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought. To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears. To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunities who control the fool. To be led by a liar is to ask to be told lies. To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into Slavery... Religion kept some of my relatives alive, because it was all they had. If they hadn't had some hope of heaven, some companionship in Jesus, they probably would have committed suicide, their lives were hellish... To survive let the past teach you- Past customs, Struggles, Leaders and Thinkers. Let these help you. Let them inspire you, warn you, give you strength. But beware: God is change. Past is past. What was cannot come again. To survive, know the past. Let it touch you. Then let the past go... Kindness eases change- Love quiets fear... I wasn't trying to work out my own ancestry. I was trying to get people to feel Slavery. I was trying to get across the kind of emotional and psychological stones that slavery threw at people... Beware, ignorance protects itself and protected ignorance grows... People have the right to call themselves whatever they like. That doesn't bother me. It's other people doing the calling that bothers me... Sometimes being a friend means mastering the art of timing. There is a time for silence. A time to let go and allow people to hurl themselves into their own destiny. And time to prepare to pick up the pieces when it's all over... Writing was what I wanted to do, it was always what I wanted to do. I had novels to write so I wrote them... Writing is one of the few professions in which you can psychoanalyze yourself, get rid of hostilities and frustrations in public, and get paid for it... Here I was into astronomy, and here into anthropology, and there I go into geology. It was much more fun to be able to research and write about whatever I wanted"- Octavia Estelle Butler(June 22,1947-February 24,2006) - 1 of the most renown American Science Fiction Writers #WCW #BHM #BlackHistoryIsGlobal #OurGlobalFusion

The CIA backed coup in Ghana was part of a Cold War conflict of the times as President Nkrumah was seen as an ally of Soviet Union and Eastern Europe". Today the decapitated body of Dr. Nkrumah's statue stands in memoriam as a symbol of Ghana's Brain-Trust downfall, while Ghana's international airport is named after the man who deferred Africa and Ghana's dreams at a time when its 1st president became the 1st Democratically elected Black President to have a seat at the global table from East to West, as he spoke the words into the mantra of his nation with- "We face neither East Nor West, We face Forward... Forward Ever, Backward Never"! Forward in an African nation who had the most development in manufacturing, education, energy, agriculture, sports and arts- still unmatched til today in Ghana by any other president after him- So the question going around about whether Ghana was better off without Nkrumah is an ignorant one to anyone who has vision! "If I didn't define myself, I would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive... Black women are programmed to define ourselves within this male attention and to compete with each other for it rather than to recognize and move upon our common interests... Black writers, of whatever quality, who step outside the pale of what Black writers are supposed to write about, or who Black writers are supposed to be, are condemned to silence in Black literary circles that are as total and as destructive as any imposed racism... In our work and in our living, we must recognize that differences is a reason for celebration and growth, rather than a reason for destruction... Only by learning to live in harmony with your contradictions can you keep it all afloat... There are no new ideas. There are only new ways of making them felt... When we speak, we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak... Your silence will not protect you... It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences... I an deliberate and afraid of nothing... When I use my strength in service of my vision, it makes no difference whether or not I am afraid... The sharing of joy, whether physical, emotional, psychic, or intellectual forms a bridge between the sharers which can be the basis for understanding much of what is not shared between them, and lessens the threat of their difference... Each time you love, love as deeply as if it were forever" - Audre Lorde (Born Audrey Geraldine Lorde on February 18,1934-November 17,1992) -A Caribbean-American writer and Activist #BHM #BlackHistoryIsGlobal #OurGlobalFusion

"If you're going to hold someone down- you're going to have to hold on by the other end of the chain. You are confined by your own repression... Freeing yourself was one thing; claiming ownership of that freed self was another... No one ever talks about the moment you found out that you were White. Or the moment you found out you were Black. That's a profound revelation. The minute you find that out, something happens. You have to renegotiate everything... Everybody gets everything handed to them. The rich inherit it. I don't mean just inheritance of money. I mean what people take for granted among the middle classes, which is nepotism, the old-boy network... I'm always annoyed about why Black people have to bear the brunt of everybody else's contempt. If we are not totally understanding and smiling, suddenly we're demons... I get angry about things, then go on and work... I merged those two words, Black and Feminist, because I was surrounded by Black women who were very tough and who always assumed they had to work and rear children and manage homes... She is a friend of mind. She gathers me, man. The pieces I am, she gather them and give them back to me in all the right order. It's good, you know, when you got a woman who is a friend of your mind... As you enter positions of trust and power, dream a little before you think... All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was... At some point in life the world's beauty becomes enough. You don't need to photograph, paint or even remember it. It is enough"- Toni Morrison ( Born Chloe Ardelia Wofford on February 18,1931) -American Novelist, Editor, Activist And Professor #BHM #BlackHistoryIsGlobal #OurGlobalFusion

#TruthTuesday ... "Any day now, We/I shall be released... An Artist's duty is to reflect the times. As far as I am concerned it's their choice. I choose to reflect the times & situations in which I find myself. That to me is my duty. At this crucial time in our lives, when everything is so desperate, when everyday is a matter of survival- I don't think you can help but be involved. We shall shape & mold this country or it will not be molded & shaped at all anymore. How can you be an artist & not reflect the times?"- Nina Simone... We will profit by, or pay for, whatever they become"- James Baldwin "With confidence, you have won before you have started... Any leadership that teaches you to depend on another race, is a leadership that will enslave you"- Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr. "Revolutions are brought about by men, by men who think as men of action and act as men of thought...Freedom is not something that one people can bestow on another as a gift. #WCW #RealRevolutionaries ... "Now I see that some of you fear to go forward to fight for our king. If it was in the brave days of Osei Tutu, Okomfo Anokye, and Opoku Ware; chiefs would not sit down to see their king to be taken away without firing a shot. No European could have dared speak to chiefs of Asante in the way the governor spoke to you this morning. Is it true that the bravery of Asante is no more? I cannot believe it. It cannot be! I must say this: if you, the men of Asante, will not go forward, then we will. We, the women, will. I shall call upon my fellow women. We will fight! We will fight till the last of us falls in the battlefield." -Yaa Asantewaa (c. 1840- October 16,1921) "I grew up like a neglected weed- ignorant of liberty, having no experience of it... Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world... I freed a thousand slaves, I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves" - Araminta Ross AKA Harriet Tubman (c. 1822-March 10,1913- "So arm in arms, with arms, we'll fight this struggle, 'Cause that's the only way we can overcome our little trouble...No more internal power struggle; We come together to overcome the little trouble...'Cause I don't want my people to be contrary... For Generations We Have Been Told By Our Ancestors, Griots, Educators and Revolutionaries, but generation after generation ignorance becomes bliss and we choose to not hear the good word! Thank you SiStar Alice Walker (February 9,1944) and all those who have continued the good word! One day we may come to be at peace with ourselves enough to accept and own our power, instead of always giving it away and then turning around in miseducation and self-delusion to continue the narrative that others stole it from us! "Everyman got the right to decide his own destiny, And in this judgement there is no partiality. So arm in arms, with arms, well fight this struggle. 'Cause that's the only way we can overcome our little trouble. No more internal struggle; We come together to overcome the little trouble. Soon we'll find out who us the real revolutionary. 'Cause I don't want my people to be contrary. To divide and rule could only tear us apart; In every man's chest- there beats a heart. So soon we'll find our who is the true revolutionaries; And I don't want my people to be tricked by mercenaries" - Bob Marley #YouAreWhoYouHaveBeenWaitingFor #BelieveInYourself #BHM #BlackHistoryIsGlobal #OurGlobalFusion

From Africa to her Diaspora we created the Formation in Slayage! It's that time of year again when the world along with global Africans celebrate our history and roots in pure unapologetic decadence before the religious Advent season where we practice self-discipline and cleanse from the debauchery of Carnival! From New Orleans, to Trinidad And Tobago, to Rio De Janeiro, to Haiti, to Guinea-Bissau- global Africans celebrate carnival, sometimes by different names but always within its African roots and flavor! While many debate whether carnival is rooted in Africa or Europe, or a construct of Christianity and Catholicism in particular, carnival clearly represents our global fusion in our Trans-Atlantic journey from the shores of Africa to Europe, to the Americas and the Caribbean with all of its celebratory allure! Honoring our own beauty, creativity, cuisine, traditions and rituals across the Atlantic has always been part of our journey -never lost nor redefined in foundation of its formation! I am constantly perturbed by how so many of Mama Africa's children are always starved for a savior and a leader in the celebration of themselves, when it's always been part of who we are -there for all of us who seek it instead of falling prey & choosing the distractions and miseducation by all the inside & outside influences who constantly act like this hasn't always existed for countless generations in many formations & that somehow it's all newly being formulated my a new self-empowered generation seeking leaders & role models, instead of seeing that we rather gave up our powers & embrace of our self-celebration & traditions that even slavery, colonialism & constant genocides of generations could never take away from us! Ignorance of self & history in this day & age of widely available information is by choice! Those who wait for others to let them see their own light will forever be in self-imposed darkness because the shackles have long come off - it's a matter of you now stepping forward to TURN ON the switch that once held you in submission! "The most common way people give up their power is by thinking the don't have any" Alice Walker #Carnival #BHM #BlackHistoryIsGlobal #OurGlobalFusion

"Some people feel the rain- Others just get wet... Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds... Every man has a right to decide his own destiny... Me only have one ambition, Y'know- I only have one thing I really like to see happen. I like to see mankind live together- Black, White, Chinese, everyone - That's all... Open your eyes, look within- Are you satisfied with the life you're living?... People want to listen to a message, word of Jah. This could be passed through me or anybody. I am not a leader, Messenger-the words of the songs, not the person, is what attracts people... Who feels it knows it not, but you can't run away from yourself... I handle fame by not being famous... During the time of this Calypso thing people dem weren't so conscious about Africa and where dem roots come from, not from the point of music because music is always conscious... Since the reggae come now the lyrics differ... I think my biggest influences is Marcus Garvey, Haile Selassie... Education that we don't get in school, we don't get that type of education that when we grow up we can know who he is. We get a more education that we might know who Christopher Columbus is, who Marco Polo is, but we never really know who Marcus Garvey is, who Haile Selassie is or who any Black man is... I see Africa's problem is that outside people keep fatiguing the people- mek dem can't really get dem ting together... Don't get too bust that you can't check out that truth because the truth is there.. My music will go on forever. Maybe it's a fool say that, but when me know facts- me can say facts... One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain..." "My potential is more than can be expressed within the bounds of my race or ethnic identity... We must reach out our hand in friendship and dignity both to those who would befriend us and those who would be our enemy... One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation... If I were to say, 'God why me?' about the bad things, then I should have said, 'God, why me?' about the good things that happened in my life... True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost... You've got to get to the stage in life where going for it is more important than winning or losing... Clothes and manners do not make the man; but when he is made, they greatly improve his appearance... From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life...
