Oh my goodness Joel as a long-haul truck driver?? What a perfect job for his little brooding sad regretful solitary self, long stretches on endless highways, all that time to ruminate, how it closes him off from so much normal human interaction and chance for healing, how he gets to always be in command and control of such a massive vehicle, *ahem* 🫦😇...

"You were going to make sure this new customer would receive the best biscuits and gravy on this side of the Mississippi." FOR REAL, if this man sat down and ordered in my diner I would be begging the chef to pull out all the stops because just look at himmmm. 🥰

I had a lovely time sitting here just now imagining his face and that pained sad expression, "soulful brown eyes" indeed! I love grumpy Joel, love this idea and what kind of AU/Joel's past you might have in mind, would def like to read more!

Note: This just came to me as I was eating brunch. Joel is an OTR driver, stopping for a meal, as he transports cargo. This is my first time writing Joel, so please be kind. And yes, I’m inspired by P’s portrayal of Joel.

“Hi there, what can I get for you?”

The most soulful pair of brown eyes finally met yours, as you began to assist him. He definitely wasn’t a regular, because you recognized everyone who sat at these tables.

It felt as though he was in deep thought when you greeted him. Shoulders slumped, furrowed brow, very reserved, in stark contrast to the bustle of the other customers in the diner you called home.

Home also was this sleepy town, where families, college students driving cross-country, and hard-working OTR drivers passed through, temporarily pausing at the rest stops and your diner. A place to take a beat, get some shut-eye, have a good meal, before moving on. That was the norm and you were used to this.

But this one appeared to be different.

“Sorry… Hi. I’ll have a coffee, black. Biscuits and some bacon, please.”

���That’s it?”

A short “yup” came your way as the man handed you the menu. “Don’t need much.”

An easy order, no need to write anything down. You were going to make sure this new customer would receive the best biscuits and gravy on this side of the Mississippi.

As you observed, you had to admit he was one of the more handsome visitors lately, so there was incentive to impress, hoping he would return during a future trek.

With a smile, you answered, “Sounds good. It will be here before you know it.”

With a curt nod, the man spoke. “Thank you, ma’am.”

It had been a while since you heard such a formal title. You giggled, insisting the man call you by your first name.

The newcomer’s eyebrows raised, confused. “Ma’am, that’s not how I was raised.”

“I appreciate your manners, but here, everyone is a friend. First name basis now.” Leaning over, you whispered, “Owner’s request.”

Seeing that you weren’t budging, and he did not want to offend, a deep sigh arose.

“Alright, fine,” he relented, repeating your name slowly, in a tone that honestly made your insides tingle with desire. “Joel.”

“Nice to meet you.”

my problem is that im very good at keeping track of money and expenses but “buying food” and “buying craft and road trip stuff” don’t seem to register in the Youre Spending Money category in my brain so I go alright water bill is higher this month gas is paid I get my paycheck Friday ok now why is there one hundred dollars missing. (I bought a con ticket, 3 yards of fabric, and ingredients for black bean burgers + beef bao)

The whole debacle with the Felix Remix of biscuits and gravy is equal parts hilarious and unfortunate for me, in particular, because like, ya know, yeah, Oreos in beef granules, Oreos & Beef, that sounds bad.

To most folks at least, probably.

I, tragically, am haunted by the presence of, in my opinion, a much worse sounding execution of that general concept.

That beast being the Oreo Stuffed Cheeseburger.

Which is something I have seen, irl, at both local restaurants and fair grounds, and, as you might could guess from the name, is where they take a beef patty, put Oreos in the middle of said patty, and then follow it up with the rest of the steps one might take to produce a cheeseburger.

And it's been a while since I seen it, so I'm not entirely sure but I think they also put either icing, crushed oreos, or both, on top of the patty with the rest of the condiments.

I've seen another version too, the Deep Fried Oreo Cheeseburger, which is a cheeseburger with deep fried oreos on top, and then again I think the icing and maybe crushed oreos.

And who knows, maybe that actually sounds good to y'all, idk, but that seems worse to me. Like Felix's thing just got beef and oreo, cookie and sauce, these you have the beef and the oreo, but theres also cheese, mustard, onion, etc, etc... all along with a bunch more oreos, and none of those things are something I'd want near an oreo to begin with so.

Sounds bad!

But people eat and enjoy all of these things, I had people tell me that they thought it sounded bad, but it was actually surprisingly good!

And so! It's very funny to me because like, that means Felix is not entirely wrong! Oreo and beef is a flavor combo people enjoy, people would like his biscuits and gravy, there's places you can buy this sort of thing from out there in the world, right now.

There's even been kinda similar concepts served widespread via chain store like, you ever thought your cheeseburger wasn't sticky enough? Well, you're in luck, there was a point you could buy the Peanut Butter Bacon Cheeseburger, and also the Peanut Butter Bacon Milkshake, which yes, had real bacon chunks in it like Look at these things

People ate these People enjoyed these

To me that sounds awful, but a whole lotta people really liked them

And so between that and the Oreo Cheeseburger, I think Felix's true calling in life was to have some sort of food truck. Like, he should be at a state fair, making concoctions of questionable edibility that people are either disgusted by or adore, and instead, alas, he was British.

This man is gonna end up visiting Outlaw in Texas one day and accidentally start a trend, like, he's gonna invent the Brown Gravy Oreo Cheeseburger or some shit like that. We're gonna end up with Cowboy Felix where that's what he does now, no more assisting with horrific medical experiments, he's making his own, in the culinary field!

Let him have fun with strange food combinations, he deserves it

I think Brucie would love hot porridge-y stuff for breakfast like grits or oatmeal. It would take a while for him to warm up to cold oats, like the overnight oats with yogurt, but he’d eat if if it would make you happy and it’d grow on him eventually.
