Liza Donnelly Discusses Barbara Shermund.
Since it’s Women's History month, I thought I would write about my favorite female New Yorker cartoonist from the past. Many are surprised to hear there were cartoonists who were women at the start of the magazine in 1925. But there were, and my favorite was Barbara Shermund.
Tumblr media
Born in 1899 in San Francisco, Barbara Shermund studied art at the California School of Arts, and at age 26 moved to New York City.  It wasn't long before she started with The New Yorker in its first few months, and she drew covers for them. Within the year, she then moved on to doing spot drawings and cartoons, as well as continuing to draw covers. Her drawing style changed in those early days, but soon she found a technique she liked and stuck with it.  I have an original drawing of hers and it is large and painterly, as if she used a brush for the line work and often large swatches of white paint for highlights. But she was also known for her tight drawings that almost look print-like.  I admire her desire to experiment with her drawing.
Tumblr media
Shermund wrote her own captions when she began, and her voice was representative of the times--breezy, "flapper-like" and at times feminist.  What came through in her early cartoons was a tone that said women were independent and really didn't need men!  Her cartoon women spoke their mind; her cartoons seemed to reflect the feeling of the roaring twenties in New York city.
Tumblr media
A prolific artist, Shermund published many cartoons in the New Yorker in the first decade and a half of the magazine's life. Then, like many of her colleagues, she began selling cartoons to Esquire in the late nineteen thirties, and her style shifted yet again. The New Yorker also hired a new cartoon editor in 1939, James Geraghty.  She began using  "gag writers" (one was fellow cartoonist Eldon Dedini, and they were friends as well), and her cartoons changed yet again to be less feminist, more in step with the times of post-war America.
Barbara Shermund died in 1978 in New Jersey.
Here is an article I was interviewed for about Ms. Shermund in The Billy Ireland Library and Museum blog. You can view many of her drawings there in the archives of the Billy Ireland Library and Museum at Ohio State University.
Liza Donnelly is an award winning cartoonist and writer for The New Yorker Magazine and The New York Times, and is resident cartoonist at CBS News. Donnelly’s book Women On Men, was a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor; and her history of women cartoonists, Funny Ladies, is considered a resource for historians of the art form. Donnelly delivered a TED talk that was translated into 38 languages and received 2 million online views. She lives in New York. You can find her Twitter here, Instagram here, and website here.

Burnettt-Jelbirt Gomera to serve as main event for Friday's stacked card beginning at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT Saunders to battle Shefat Isufi for vacant WBO super middleweight title Saturday with live stream starting at 2:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. PT
Champions Weekend is coming to ESPN+, as two of the United Kingdom’s most dynamic fighters — former WBO middleweight world champion Billy Joe Saunders and former unified bantamweight world champion Ryan Burnett — are set to headline separate shows. Burnett will battle Jelbirt Gomera for the vacant WBC International super bantamweight title Friday at Ulster Hall in his hometown of Belfast, Northern Ireland. The Burnett-Gomera live stream will begin at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT exclusively on ESPN+ and will also feature a compelling vacant IBF European junior lightweight title fight between Declan Geraghty and Marco McCullough. Geraghty and McCullough were roommates in the Irish amateur ranks and will renew acquaintances with a world ranking on the line. Saunders will take center stage Saturday, as he battles Shefat Isufi for the vacant WBO super middleweight title from Lamex Stadium in Stevenage, England. The Saunders-Isufi live stream will start at 2:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. PT on ESPN+ and will also include the highly anticipated heavyweight showdown between 2016 Olympic super heavyweight silver medalist Joe Joyce (8-0, 8 KOs) and former world title challenger Alexander Ustinov (34-3, 25 KOs). ESPN+ is the leading direct-to-consumer sports streaming service. Fans can sign up for ESPN+ for just $4.99 a month (or $49.99 per year) at www.espnplus.com. Saunders (27-0, 13 KOs) made three successful defenses of the title he won from Andy Lee on Dec. 19, 2015, punctuating his middleweight title run with a dominant decision over David Lemieux in December 2017. A 2008 Olympian, Saunders captured British, Commonwealth and European middleweight titles, defeating the likes of Chris Eubank Jr., John Ryder and Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan. Isufi (27-3-2, 20 KOs) has won 10 consecutive fights, most recently defending his WBO Intercontinental super middleweight belt with a unanimous decision over Mohamed El Achi in his adopted hometown of Munich, Germany. Burnett (19-1, 9 KOs) recently signed a long-term promotional contract with Top Rank and will be competing at super bantamweight after a sterling run at bantamweight. He defeated Lee Haskins via unanimous decision in June 2017 to win the IBF world title, and four months later, he bested Zhanat Zhakiyanov to unify the IBF and WBA super world titles. Burnett suffered his first pro defeat last November when he tore his oblique while throwing a punch versus Nonito Donaire and was forced to retire on his stool following the fourth round. Gomera (14-5, 7 KOs) is a Filipino southpaw who will be fighting for the first time outside of Asia. He is a former Filipino super bantamweight and featherweight champion and is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision win over Lloyd Jardeliza.

Movement blog on the use of the imagination and how it allows freedom of expression in my characterisation as an actor
I have found that my imagination helps me dramatically when it comes to my characterisation as an actor. I am an image-based person, so that’s where I always start, usually creating a Pintrest board and finding a voice to re-interpret and put my own spin on.  For my characterisation of Princess, I had to step a huge jump away from myself, both physically and vocally and I studied the actress Tallulah Bankhead in great detail. I used my imagination to capture images of things that would keep Princess ticking over and looked at how she would approach strangers with direct brashness, which is what I saw through the [1](Youtube clips) I found of Bankhead.
I did this particularly by focusing on how she behaved in public and private moments. When Princess is in the company of strangers and therefore in public, I used[2](Chekov’s archetype) of lifting up for her state of mind and [3](Laban’s effort) of press for her strong, forward footed walk. I wanted to use this slow, heavy stride to add age to my character and my costume helped me also to imagine what it would feel like to be in my 50’s. The Laban effort of press came to me in a frozen image, of pushing through a crowd of people, as she did when she went to collect her award as a film star before the play begins. My director [4](Thomas Bailey) suggested having an inner cargo of humiliation. For this, I decided to choose Princess being kicked out of the hotel in front of everyone because this directly lent itself to my embodiment of the character and for me this was a strong image that I held at the back of mind during the scene. Comments from my work as princess for last term were on the effect of these inner cargo images being clearly seen and transmitted and allowing myself as Princess to take up space in the public moments. I decided to close up more for the intimate moments with Chance. In order to transmit these to the audience, it was in these private moments both for my TV and theatre characters that I wanted to challenge myself to be present in the emotions more and each individual thought and image. I felt that on the day this was able to come across but during rehearsals and dress runs I was finding it difficult to let go and be in the present moment. Images are behind every verbal and non-verbal communication and this is definitely something I focused on with Marianne and that I would like to focus on going forward with my character of Agnes, for A Bright Room Called Day.
[5](Gareth Taylor) helped me with my physicality for Marianne during a body lab session I had before the filming of my period drama scenes this term. He helped me with my physicality for her by taking the animal of an octopus which I had chosen for her animal and imagining the movement of the tentacles in my head and neck rather than my entire body. This equally enabled me to remember my length and posture of the 1800’s, which transformed my habitual body to that of Marianne’s. Gareth gave me an image of a pole being centred in my spine, to remind me of the restriction of movement stemming from etiquette, costume and behaviour of the time. The image of the pole made my gestures and movements as Marianne more subtle. Marianne kept her hands crossed and gestured through emotion by the way she folded clothes at the top of the scene or lost composure of this pole like posture. This outside in approach helped me greatly to achieve the higher more loose emotional stakes of the scene. The (period turns)[6] were taught to us by Billy in week 1, we imagined being called to at a dance and turning to face the caller, using first the head, then the shoulder then the body. I used this turn in my TV scene; however, my turn was in direct response to a comment made by my sister, Elinor. My movement was quick and sharp because I recognised how emotions would take over your body in a scene like this, when you’re in your private space with your sister. Similarly, going back to my character of Princess, the imagery I used for her physicality changed depending if I was in the presence of someone I knew well and intimately (Chance) or whether it was with strangers, AKA hotel owners and managers.
Another technique I use for both my outer and inner physical body for a character is cargos. I find [7](inner cargo) as well as outer cargos super helpful to myself as an actor. Particularly, when using one single image to take through the scene. This is absolutely something I would like to improve on and develop going forward. For Marianne, I imagined a [8](coke bottle) being opened and slowly fizzing over until it stopped. Rea and I found that this use of our imagination helped to keep things bubbling over. I allowed the image of pushing open the door as my inner cargo for princess which kept me erupting in the space. This eruption stemmed from a fire that I focused in my belly. This took the [9](elements) and gave me a physical picture or force that created a sensation for me as a character.
I would like to develop my imagination further for my characterisation of Agnes this term and choose just a few solid images to use that are strong and have depth, rather than trying to do lots of them all at once. Images are definitely something that work for me and I think that imagery based exercises are what help me create the world of the play and my character from the get go. I will try to be more specific with my choices, so that I create more bold and definite character choices. Another imagery based exercise that I have already incorporated for Agnes is the [10](character river stories). These are a great starting point for any character, as well as my [11](Pintrest boards) because they allow my imagination to go all over the place and get more subtext and information about why they may have certain quirks and traits. They are super helpful to myself in unravelling more detail about a character, I have used Pintrest for both Charles, Princess and Agnes’ exploration.
[1] (Youtube Clips) Week 1, Term 1, Year 2- I watched a Youtube video of Tallulah Bankhead to base the physicality and voice on for Princess.
[2] (Chekov’s archetype) Week 3, Term 1, Year 2- I explored the lift up archetype we had looked at in Gareth Taylor’s lesson in my rehearsal time.
[3] (Laban’s effort) Week 3, Term 1, year 2- I explored the Laban effort of Press in my rehearsal time.
[4] (Thomas Bailey) Week 6, Term 1, year 2- Thomas Bailey got us to think about our inner and outer tempos and to collect images that relate to this idea.
[5] (Gareth Taylor) Week 2, Term 2, Year 2- Gareth Taylor and I had a body lab session, whereby we went through my ideas and thoughts for my physicality of Marianne.
[6] (Period turns) Billy Geraghty- Week 1, Term 2, Year 2- Billy gave us a short tutorial on how to period turn.
[7] (Inner Cargo) Inner cargo is an image or a sensation that stimulates something for a character that is always there during a scene.
[1] (Coke Bottle) Week 2, Term 2, Year 2- I worked with the image of a coke bottle and this I took sensationally with myself to get this bubbling feeling. I rehearsed with Rea imagining it as an image inside me ready to erupt.
[1] (Elements) Taylor. G. Week 4, Term 1, Year 2- Looking at elements and how this can create imagery and sensations, making associations.
[1] (Character river stories) Wild. J. Week 3, Term 2, Year 1- We looked at how we could create backstory through a character river story. Delving into memories through song, poems and key words etc.
[1] (Pintrest Boards) Taylor. G. Year 2- Creating images on one page, all the initial ideas and thoughts and associations with the character. Like an initial mind map, Gareth Taylor mentioned that this was a good basis for a beginning of character.
