Now answering the question, what's with Chet's arm?

Ok, so everyone knows that the monster Chet has one claw bigger than the other, when designing a human form for him I tried to recreate this in many ways. The first was basically amputating one of his arms, but I was not very satisfied with the idea since in many scenes it uses both extremities.

So I thought maybe he had some disability that affected his hand, like involuntary movements or not being able to move it much, but that didn't convince me either. Then the L O R E came, I invented a story for him, an accident that caused several injuries to one of his eyes and his arm, the scar that was left on him causes him insecurity, so he covers it with a bandage.

🎬: About Es being a past prisoner and the secret 11th prisoner in your AU. But advance apologies if I'm overstepping into your AU!

I had this idea from a story that pretty much did the same thing. Going off there are novels/manga on Milgram and there being another Es and their own prisoners running another Milgram (but differently) I imagine this Milgram projects has been going on for a while, and our Es was from a previous project who might have gotten the worst verdict (or the most spared out of everyone), and was given this final task as a warden for the next group of prisoners. This is why they so readily agreed and had their memories wiped for this Milgram project instead of being weary on a shady project on judging an almost crime, they've already been through this.

(BTW is it bad and worrying for one of our ten fav prisoners to be the next Es if this is legit...)

Anyway, that's why Es is in Milgram in your AU, I guess? And the lore drop that Kotoko picks up on them being the 11th prisoner, I can imagine her also talking to Kazui since he's a policeman to see if she could cross out any theories on who Es is (Did they look familiar. Possible missing child. Any cases to do with an almost crime by a child other than the 10 of them here). Kazui knows Kotoko wants to investigate, but reminds her that, like in their prison while the trial is on, the facilities they're in have high security too. They do have the freedom to move about, but still limited.

If they're trying to investigate Es, maybe Fuuta, Kotoko and Mikoto can try to do the hacking on the comp Mikoto's allowed to use to Photoshop some shots for the MVs and photos (Fuuta and Kotoko seem to be able to search up info they need I think...). Yuno, Mahiru and Muu can work on charming the staff to see if they can spill more deets on Milgram. Not sure how much the group can gather, but oh boy fun times in Milgram can turn into another sort of stress in this AU...

No worries!! Like I said before, this whole au has been a fun collaborative project, so there's no overstepping :) I am sorry I won't be writing a lot on the ending until we get more info, but that's just the perfectionist in me who doesn't want to be proven wrong 😅 Still, I love tossing around and digging into ending scenarios, I really love this!

Because that would make a lot of sense why they're so willing to subject themself to the whole experiment! They remember how tough their experience was, and are confident they can care for the new set of prisoners while doing their job. I'm imagining they get the opportunity to return as guard, and get to have a nice talk with their own guard first. Once they fully understand what it's like, they're know they can handle it and sign up. It adds a bit of drama, too, since they must have been really young committing their crime in order to complete a years-long experiment prior to this one. They would have been like 10? Oof. (Now I wanna see their three trial songs 👀)

And like you said, that also brings up the question of the new warden. Though I think it's based on verdict results, I can just picture Jackalope keeping an eye on everyone during filming. He studyies their interactions and personalities, keeping his own set of notes on who would make a good successor. (I'm not going to go through every character but there are pros to any choice, it's very fun picturing them all taking the job.) Haha, on the other hand, maybe the reason Kotoko keeps bringing up her role as Es' partner/bringer of justice is because she did discover the truth. She drops as many hints as possible so she can be chosen next 😅

Ooh, I love her working with Kazui on an investigation! The fact that eh may know details on recent crimes (and almost-crimes) is super fun to work with. He's the last person who's going to spill a secret, so the group could go several trials without realizing Kazui had actually heard all about their situation this whole time.

(Getting sidetrack for a sec, I'm suddenly realizing that he and Kotoko may have heard things about the crimes in canon, too. They're a bit unclear about how much time passed between the murders and arriving to Milgram, so maybe he heard some things. I don't know how well-connected Tokyo police departments are, but Yuno, Fuuta, Muu, and Shidou are all nearby. There's definitely a chance he caught word of the vigilante nearby, and she heard about the odd policeman's suicide. Both of them could have heard about the tragic housefire, the disgraced doctor, or horrible schoolgirl murder nearby.)

Anyway, I like that idea of Kazui wracking his brain for any similar cases. Though, if he had, Milgram may have had the foresight to wipe parts of his memory, too. Maybe he does end up using his call to reach out to Hinako and have her look into it from the outside. Sadly, Kotoko seems the type to sacrifice her personal call to reach out to a connection who can help as well. I'll have to think about how closely Jackalope monitors those calls, hm.

I'm going crazy over prisoner investigation team !! Kotoko and Fuuta had the online knowledge to find some good info, and Mikoto and Kazui seem like they'd have a huge network of people they can ask for info and favors from. Haha, I'm torn whether Mahiru would have flirting down to a science or if she'd refuse to do it since it wasn't real love 😂 Still, she's very good at reading people and could definitely help the others charm and bribe their way into some restricted areas. Amane and Haruka can also charm with their innocence/cuteness (though I'm not sure Amane would). Shidou seems very organized, he'd have a plan and backup plan and backup-backup plan ready, no matter what happens. I think it's even funnier, then if Milgram had run several experiments prior. Jackalope would think this was just another runthrough, and for the first time the ten subjects decided to organize together and Cause Problems.

I think there's a beautiful irony in a story featuring ten prisoners planning a jailbreak to save the prison guard...

hi! I love your Midnight Oil fic, it’s so good! I have a question about it-more specifically Baron. In the fic, Baron seems to be based on Fig’s lies instead of Riz’s, but during the baronies/con era, it seemed implied that Riz was at least dreaming of them. Am I wrong, and if not, will the fic ever expand on that?

Hi! Thank you for the question! There are a lot of moving pieces in Midnight Oil and in all honesty, I don't know for certain where they're all going to end up, and I certainly didn't know for sure what the fic would look like up to this point when I started, let alone beyond that. All this to say, when I put that Baron foreshadowing in the Baronies era, I had no idea what I was going to do with them and simply trusted myself to figure something out in the future. Obviously, I did! But unfortunately that foreshadowing does not match what I ended up doing with them. If/when I go back to do any edits, I'll definitely change it.

This strategy of leaving myself threads and trusting that I'll pick the back up has generally worked well in Midnight Oil--I had no idea what I was going to do with Jean when I left him alive, and I didn't decide that Nazca was going to be Poxson's red herring mom until I wrote the last chapter where she's alive--and it maintains my enthusiasm for writing, but there are drawbacks to it.

Baron specifically was a huge question mark for a long time in terms of how I was going to incorporate them, or if I was going to incorporate them at all. There was a version I played around with for a bit where Kalina basically created Baron and thrusted them in Riz's direction after Aelwyn got captured as a replacement for her (predictably, he took it extremely poorly) but that's not what ended up happening. I didn't know Baron was going to be Fig's thing until I wrote the chapter where it's first mentioned.

So that's my answer, but that's very much from a writing perspective. As for an in-universe explanation (and this is largely me talking out of my ass) Baron is already semi-formed at this point in time and wants to play with their cat?/sister?'s toy for a little bit before daddy says he's off limits because Riz is doing important work.

"I believe, however, that the usage of this attire was not necessary." If one were to look closely, they could see the beginnings of a pout of his stoic visage. "I have muscles of my own..."

"You can't be half naked in public in Japan," Himuro stated.

"You can't be half naked, but you can wear booty shorts in public?" Erika arched an eyebrow.

"If it isn't your real ass," Himuro shrugged.

"Can we just start already?" Murasakibara grumbled. "I look stupid. This is stupid. Our school is stupid."

Masako merely shook her head at the group of complaining teens. "It's only for a day, and you all practiced your acts. You'll be fine."

"I didn't say we weren't fine, I just think it's unfair - ow!"

"Perhaps one day A-Xiang shall be learning the lesson of not responding with snark to our circusmaster."

"So, are we going to pretend that Erika-chan dressing like a seal isn't the weirdest thing about this Volunteer Day?"

I find it so funny that summer is when the yearning starts bc all my oc writing is still housed in wattpad drafts (too lazy to move my self indulgent stories to my google docs) and it all says last edited in late May or June July August like all my self indulgent imaginary soulmate shit is just bc I get incredibly lonely in the summer and it’s so much easier to daydream constantly when you’re working shitty retail jobs with repetitive tasks ands the days feel like you’re swimming thru molasses and everything is sticky and you’re eating cold fruit constantly and smoking and lounging around in front of a fan like it’s what you were born to do and so you’re laying there with your eyes closed imagining the way it would feel to be loved by someone as imperfect as you and so you write OC’s that you always used as a way to brainstorm a world where you didn’t want to die you imagine a version of yourself that did it all right the first time and or built something from the failure you feel now and so you spend all summer writing about an imaginary love and an imaginary happy future bc the summer drags u slowly against the burning pavement and you need to remember what it’s all been for you need to find a version of yourself you could imagine someone loving

Oh I would LOVE to see her meet the Koopalings??? I wanna imagine they are her brand of Weird Kid, she'd get along great with them for sure.

The Koopalings don't have explicitly canon ages, I think the closest we get is the implication you fight them in age order in Mario Bros 3, starting with Larry and ending with Ludwig

With that in mind my current headcanons are as follows;

Larry - 11-12

Morton - 13

Wendy - 14-16

Iggy - 16

Roy - 16-17

Lemmy - 17, but born on February 29th on a leap year, so he instead claims to be 4

Ludwig - 18

Oh and Bowser Jr is elementary school age in modern Mario games, so like 7-8? He was, at most, 6 in Sunshine. In my head anyway.

As for Mario and Luigi's little Cousin (who I call Louise), I think she's probably 11 or 12. She'd kinda small but so is the entire Mario family, Mario himself especially, so she's probably just kinda short for her age.

I would looooove a Super Mario Super Show Reboot with this Mario family, and an entire episode on Louise in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Maybe Mario and Luigi have to watch her for a day, and really just can't keep her entertained. There's no service in the Mushroom Kingdom so she can't play on her phone or text her friends either, and eventually wanders off in frustration and into a Warp Pipe that takes her to Bowser's Kingdom

She ends up hanging out with the Koopalings, Jr. canonically plays a lot of video games so they must have consoles in the castle. She and Larry are the same age, so he's like her way in to the castle to meet everyone. Weird little kid connections.

She'd think Wendy is sooo cool and pretty, and she clearly loves destruction if her reaction to the Earth Quake before Bowers's Castle crashed into Brooklyn is any indication, so she'd love the chaos Morton and Lemmy get up to, and probably the mad scientist nonsense Iggy does as well

Maybe she's a little jealous the Koopalings are so far apart in age, but still so close. Maybe she vents a little to Roy and Ludwig about how Mario and Luigi wave her off as a nuisance, how they're so close without her, while chucking little rocks into a lava pool.

Roy would comfort her about it, offer genuine advice. He's a good kid. Ludwig, who was just planning on holding this kid hostage to get back at those stupid Mario Brothers, would eventually cave under the genuine emotion in the room and just like. Awkwardly pat her on the back?? And throw in his two cents, maybe admits as the oldest he also has trouble keeping up with Jr and even Larry sometimes, but he still loves them very much.

At the end of the episode she heads back, with all the Koopalings in her phone contacts, and idk maybe following Wendy's Instagram/TikTok, and gets half tackled by the Mario Brothers who were so worried when she disappeared. When they find out where she was they go into full hysteria.
