A New York City man accused of attacking seven women targeted his victims based on their skin color, prosecutors said while announcing a 52-count indictment against him.

Khari Covington, 29, was arraigned Wednesday on charges of assault, burglary and strangulation as hate crimes among other charges. He was arrested on Jan. 5 and remains jailed on $150,000 bail.

The Kings County District Attorney's Office said that Covington, who lives in a transitional housing center, allegedly targeted "light-skinned women" during a series of attacks between August 2020 to Jan. 4 in the East Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Five of the attacks happened in the Morgan Avenue subway station, one was at a building near the station and one was at a smoke shop.

“This defendant’s alleged violent and unprovoked attacks endangered the women he targeted and caused widespread fear in the community," district attorney Eric Gonzalez said in a statement.

"I am committed to prosecuting all hate crimes where victims, including as alleged in this case, are targeted because of their gender, skin color or race," he continued.

One of the victims, Bianca Fortis, told NBC New York that Covington "came out of nowhere" and started punching her.

"He hit my face, my chest, my shoulder," she said.

Another woman said she was at the Morgan Avenue station in November when Covington allegedly came down behind her and attacked her.

"He must have — from the angle and from what I've gathered — kicked me in the side of the face and head from behind," Elizabeth Wakefield told the outlet. "My immediate thought after it happened to me was, I really hope this doesn't happen again to somebody else."

Covington faces up to 25 years to life in prison if he's convicted. His attorney did not immediately return a request for comment on Wednesday.

1. if you could hit any character without repercussions, who would it be? 

Not gonna go with any of the designated villains, because PB writes them so over the top most of the time that I stop caring because they don’t feel like real people. It’s characters I’m supposed to find likeable that I personally find insufferable that irritate me more. So, with that being said, my gut instinct is Clint Covington (aka Baby Daddy) in Baby Bump. His whole Southern gentleman “Miss MC” shtick drove me nuts, his suits were annoying and ugly, and my MC was essentially dating him when I wanted nothing to do with him.

3. characters you would marry in an instant? 

Seth Levine. He’s the only guy PB has written that’s my real life type.

10. characters that deserved worse? >:] 

Penelope played dumb about the whole Tariq thing when she was actively involved, let MC get dragged through the mud, and faced no real consequences. Instead she was made a character to sympathize with by emphasizing her anxiety and then was rewarded with a love interest. Meanwhile Kiara never did anything wrong, and her PTSD is barely addressed. If one of those two deserved a man to sweep her off her feet, let me tell you - it wasn’t Penelope.

Savannah hid her kid from his father (but took money from his family to live in a very expensive city), ghosted her brother (who appears to have been very kind and supportive of her), and faced no consequences. Instead, her baby daddy essentially was treated as unworthy of her by the narrative and had to “earn” her love. It’s all sorts of gross and I don’t understand why it was written this way. Bianca Walker also is given a pass by the narrative for ditching her kids in a different country not long after their father died. It’s so odd to me that those two are supposed to be likeable.

Also, Madeleine didn’t deserve worse, per say, but she deserved what she got. Screw this “fragile state” crap that PB kept trying to shove down our throats. My MC remembers how Madeleine targeted Hana for bullying simply because Hana was too nice. My MC remembers Madeleine being all up in her uterus. My MC doesn’t hold Madeleine responsible for her father’s actions, but she sure as hell isn’t going to bend over backwards to accommodate that woman.

14. name a fandom, ship, or character that you love that others would send you hate mail for liking. 

Answered with some characters earlier, so we’ll go with pairings here. I completely ship Ron x Hermione and Ginny x Harry, and those are very polarizing pairings. In the Choices fandom, I obviously ship Drake x MC, which tends to draw strong reactions one way or another, and I kind of ship Ethan Ramsey and Harper Emery...

17. are there any tropes you wished were used less often? 

Ummm, a lot, hahaha! I don’t want to offend anyone here, because even a trope I find overused can be done well and completely engage me in a story. But I think love triangles in general are overused (and I am very picky about the way I like to see them executed). I am also not a big fan of “Ron Weasley the Death Eater,” aka the villainization of a canon “good” guy. Same goes for “Draco in Leather Pants,” aka the canon villain becomes just a misunderstood good guy. My personal preference is that the good guys stay “good,” even if flaws are explored, and the bad guys stay “bad,” even if more humanizing elements are addressed. I also feel like I could stand to see less “pair the spares” moments, and Soulmate AUs are also not really my thing. None of these are deal breakers for me, though.

Ruthless Knight by Ashley Jade

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the sequel to Cruel Prince because Cole was clearly fucked up by his brother’s death (can you blame him?) and I wasn’t sure how I felt about the MC being a deeply religious, plus-size virgin. It felt trope-y and I was wary on how it would be handled. All in all though I was impressed.

First things first, this book should have a *trigger warning* for body dysmorphia and eating disorders as well as violence and alcohol/substance abuse because that was one thing I was not expecting. 

Besides that I loved the complexity of Sawyer’s character because of the way she viewed religion felt familiar and inclusive rather than divisive and it lent itself to her eventually losing her virginity. I was worried her having sex would come across as trying to satisfy the needs of the genre or because of the bet Cole takes from the beginning, but the way the book is plotted and moments leading up to their first time made it feel like the natural next step. 

I was surprised by how much I grew to love Cole’s character because he was really hard to like in Cruel Prince and at the beginning, until it becomes clear just how broken he is and how genuine his feelings for Sawyer are. I liked that we got to see more of Oakley because he was such a fun character in Cruel Prince when he wasn’t being a jackass and it was nice to see him truly be someone’s friend while he sorts through his shit. 

I think what I’m most surprised by is the fact that I’m excited for Bianca’s book because for all of Cruel Prince and most of Ruthless Knight it’s easy to hate her because she’s spoiled and honestly worse than her brothers combined. But by the end her friendship with Sawyer reveals a softness in her that I can see making for a really compelling book.

I feel like my chest is made out of glass and he just took a sledgehammer to it.  I can’t breathe. I’m suffocating. No…not suffocating. Breaking. Bit by bit. Piece by fucked up piece.

Waking up from a coma feels like being told you attended some epic wild party…that you have absolutely no recollection of.

And I’ve never felt luckier. Because he loves me. Even when I didn’t know how to love myself.
