A Historical Perspective on Electricians

Even though man didn’t master electricity until the 1880s – the time that saw the first central power stations – we’ve certainly understood its brute force since prehistoric times. In fact, many of the most important gods of mythology were those with the power to wield electricity in the form of lightning. While there may have been some close calls along the road to discovering how to make electricity work for humankind, it wasn’t until around 1600 that significant steps towards understanding electromagnetism were made. It was then that the English astronomer William Gilbert made the first recorded in-depth study of static electricity. At that time he found the best way of creating static electricity was by rubbing a cloth against amber, introducing the word “electro” to the English language, which is Greek for amber.

Finally, during a thunderstorm in 1752, Benjamin Franklin did his key-on-the-kite experiment that we all learned about in grade school, and with several other important figures of the day, major inroads were made towards mastering electricity. By 1875, the first electricians installed the first municipal street lighting system in Los Angeles, followed by Paris three years later. Even then those electricians still had somewhat of a divine nature.

Also of interest to note, up until about 1884 there was vigorous competition between the widespread adoption of alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC). Had it not been for the invention of the first transformer that year perhaps all of our houses today would be powered by direct current?

Fast-forward to the present and you find that most people take electricity for granted. However that doesn’t diminish the importance of electrician’s one iota.

Do It Before You Get 40

I was going to title it as “Do it before you die “but I feel it’s not fun to do it in your 40s or 50s. Though there is a quote that “Age is just a number” but the thing I am going to write about will inspire you for all your 40s and 50s. You will have more time to do all the exploring and crazy things.

This is about my bike trip to Leh-Ladakh which took me through number of adventures, breathtaking views all over the journey, a better version of helping others, sharing, caring, courage and many other things.

As Nelson Mandela says “When you climb a mountain, you find that there are number of other great mountains yet to climb”. Whenever I went to explore someplace, I came with names of so many other places to explore. I was thinking through this journey, I will not go to any other places for 1 or 2 months as it gave you so much to absorb that you feel you have experienced every beautiful thing in life, but after one week, I am feeling so inspired and excited to go to other places.

I went to Leh with my brother on a single Bike - RE Bullet 350 and going for the first time. Though as it says “it’s a must do trip” but the best thing is to plan to enjoy this journey, not to complete it for the sake of doing it. As we were going for the first time, we read a lot online to prepare for this journey which ends up that we packed things much than required. Though whatever we packed, will help if we landed in an emergency like

We have planned for 10 to 12 days for this trip and we returned home on 11th day. I think the best time to this journey is in June after 1 week the road opens as you will find snow on the way and on mountains which make them pretty different when you go in July. In June month, roads are a bit slippery and covered with water at some places which makes them not difficult but adventurous.

We started from Gurgaon (Haryana) in the morning and reached Chandigarh in the afternoon where we rested for few hours at our cousin’s place. We got a little late than expected while leaving from Chandigarh and when we reached Kiratpur Sahib, it was 9pm already. So we decided to stay for the night and start our journey next morning. We reached Manali next evening which we planned to reach on the first day. The road till Manali was very good and you will find river alongside road, mountains and a lot of beautiful places. We stayed in Manali next day and took online permit “Beyond Rohtang Pass” (just for Rs. 50 from hp.nic.in). On the third day, we rested, explored Manali and bought some things for further journey. The weather was pleasant in Manali that day though it’s a very crowded place. If you want to stay in Manali, try Old Manali which is less crowded and more beautiful with riverside cafes and watersports.

We continued our journey on 4th day from Manali early in the morning. It’s better to cross the Rohtang pass early in the morning as you will find a lot of traffic for checking at Gulaba though it does not create much problem for bikers. After crossing Gulaba, we had our breakfast at Marhi before Rohtang pass as we have not eaten early in the morning. Rohtang pass is good for snow and sports but the view is impressive too. So we stayed for 15 minutes and started descending the other side where you will find a stretch of 10 Km of very bad road. After that our way was very pleasant as the journey with astounding views started. You will find most beautiful places, villages, flowers mesmerizing you along the way. That reminds me of the large scenic pictures in books during my childhood.

Our next stop was at Tandi where we refueled our Bike and there is no Petrol Pump for the next 365 km. We refueled thrice before that (though our tank was not empty) once in Delhi, then after Kiratpur Sahib and then in Manali. You usually get average of 30 km/litre if your bike gives 45 to 50/litre on plain. After Tandi, we reached Keylong where we had refreshments and then to Jispa where we again stopped to sit near the river at a plainer and sandy area. You will find a lot of Mechanic Shops in Jispa in case you require any.

After Jispa, our next stop was Deepak Tal. Surrounded by mountains, it a pond of clear water and with a mesmerizing view. All the way, you will find so many places and points where you want to take photos and take that memory with you. After Deepak Tal, we stopped for 5 minutes at zing-zing bar and clicked some photos. Then you will find a small camp, for refreshment. We didn’t stopped there at first but a kilometer away, we found the most difficult water crossing, with huge flow of water, of our trip. Many riders and other vehicles were there and we thought that it will take time for army guys to make a way. So, we went back to camp and rested for half an hour.

After resting we again went to that water crossing point with no change in flow water and way. We were told that the water flow changes with time, so it’s your chance how you find that point. At the same time, a rider passed through the water, no doubt with some difficulty so we decided to pass too. As our bike was laden with too much weight, it got stuck in mid-way and I have to jump in the water to push it. Water was very cold and my shoes and trouser got wet. With some a help from a guy there, we managed to pass through that crossing with our shoes totally soaked in water. Though we changed socks but we don’t have extra pair of shoes which again moisten our socks. Someone told us that point, it will be difficult to pass through Barlacha la Pass with wet clothes and shoes as it was covered with snow and have very low temperature.

We crossed Barlacha la pass but indeed it was very difficult to pass through it. It was place with snow covered mountains and if sun is over them, it makes the view an astounding one. You will find Suraj tal surrounded by those snow mountains. I regret that we didn’t stop there as my feet were felt like frozen and best we thought to cross it as early as possible. The road after Barlacha la is a bit slippery and not very good so we had to go slow. We stopped at first camps after crossing Barlacha la which is about 6 to 8 km. We spent the night there. Our wet clothes and shoes were frozen in the morning so we tied it with luggage to dry them along the way. We left at 8 am in the morning and reached Pang around 1 pm. It was a very tiring journey of around 100 km, with a very bad road, low oxygen and headache. Only thing that is good were the surrounding views. After Sarchu, there is a place with 21 loops called Gata loops to climb up where we had to stop for an hour to help fellow riders to repair their bike.

We had lunch at Pang and slept for an hour there and left at 3 pm from there. The road and view after Pang was simply awesome. You can travel at 80 to 100 km /per hour speed. Pang to Leh is around 175 km journey with a very good road. We found the snow storm when we reached Taglang La and we traveled 15 km through it to cross Taglang la. It was a very adventurous experience. We stopped for 5 minutes at Taglang la in those snowy winds. All the things like headache and tiredness went away after Taglang la with oxygen level normalizing. We planned to stop at Rumste but carried on for Leh as we had time. The way from Rumste to Leh was very beautiful and exciting. We reached Leh at half past 8 and stayed for the night in a hotel. We had a good sleep and in the morning after taking permission from Leh DC office, we left for Pangong Lake.

The journey for Pangong Lake was memorable. We found wonderful breathtaking views, natural phenomenon, with a very good road for driving. Around 15 km near Changla, the road was broken but rest 130 km was good. We reached Pangong around 8pm and I am enthralled by the first view of Pangong. It is a huge lake of 140 km surrounded by excellent mountains with altering views throughout the day. We spent the night there in wooden rooms. There are number of camps available there with different styles. I woke up early in the morning to see the lake view before sun. Pangong Lake is divided between India and China with 40 km on Indian Side and rest on Chinese. We thought to travel that 40 km but there was no road and the way was time consuming so we decided not to proceed after few kilometers. We clicked pictures at shooting point and a dive in chilling water of Pangong. It was a great and memorable experience. When we about to start from Pangong to Leh, we found that 3 nuts of our bike were lost and couldn’t find any spares there. We then tightly tied all the parts that was secured by nuts, with ropes and started heading back. Luckily, we had bought two extra ropes from Leh. We were only worried about that 15 km bad road near Changla as that might dismantled our bike parts and the riders coming from Leh experienced bad weather along the way.

As we were lucky all our journey, we found the weather cleared when we crossed Changla without much difficulty. We reached Leh late in the night at stayed at the same hotel. As we were very tired that night, we decided to rest the next day and repair our bike. Next day around midday after repairing our bike, we thought we can go to Khardungla and come back. We left around 4 pm in the evening for Khardungla. Khardungla is highest peak of Leh and 40 km from it. Road was ok and it took us 2 hours to reach there. The view of Leh from the way of Khardungla was enthralling. The cafes were closed at Khardungla as the road was closed the day before. We stayed half an hour there, clicked some photos and reached back to Leh around 9 pm.

Next morning, we went to Shanti Stupa, where we had a nice view of Leh and then started our journey to Kargil. The road was good and the view awesome. We stopped at Gurudwara Pathar sahib and had tea and Langar (Food) there. Then we stopped at Magnetic hill point. We didn’t experience any magnetic effect there. After that we continued our journey with some short breaks for meals and pictures and reached Kargil around 8 pm. We had a very good stay at Kargil. Next morning we went to explore Kargil and went to Border View Point to see other side of Kashmir occupied by neighboring country. We had a good view of their bunkers and LOC.

We left Kargil around 12 in the afternoon and our next stop was Kargil Memorial, a very patriotic place for me which covered with green and flowery mountains. We stopped for an hour and then left for Drass where we had lunch and continued to Zojila. The road from Drass to Zojila Pass was a bit dusty and broken with some water crossing along the way. After that the way from Kargil to Sonamarg was the most amazing thing for me. As you approach to Sonamarg from Zojila, the view was so wonderful and astounding that we felt why Kashmir is called Heaven on earth. Sonamarg is most amazing place for camping between huge green mountains. We were thinking to stay for a night there but it was 5 in the evening and we had time to reach Srinagar. So we decided to go to Srinagar.

The journey to Srinagar from Sonamarg was very good full of views with no words to describe them. We reached Srinagar 7 in the evening where the situation was not well. Usually riders took bypass for Srinagar but we went through it as we planned to stay for night there. We had to leave right away from Srinagar as the city was all closed and not safe for us. We left Srinagar with the help of a local and were deciding to stay at the first place we find after Srinagar. After 30 to 40 km from it, we found a guest house but not good so we decided to proceed forward. It was raining and dark but keeping the situation in mind we had to go. We were then thinking to stay at Anantnag or go to Jammu. Since we had to go 3 km the other way from our planned route if we want to stay at Anantnag, we decided not to stay.

On the same day, there was a cricket match between India and Pakistan which the latter won with huge gap. We found cheering for that win along 200 km which we had to travel extra at that night. In between, we stopped for half an hour to rest at a dark and lonely place, where we heard cheers from nearby villages. Then we stopped for half an hour because of some construction work where we met some fellow travellers who came through Anantnag and faced very bad situation there. I suggested staying at Udhampur based on my past experience but it was very far away. We were very tired and sleepy but managed to reach at Udhampur at 3am where we found a hotel and stayed for the night. It was an exhausting experience from Srinagar to Udhampur. Next day, we started from Udhampur to our hometown Batala which was a 4 hour drive from Udhampur.

The last day feeling was a bit awkward as the wonderful journey ends and we wanted it for few more days. We regretted that we didn’t stay at Sonamarg but we had so many other experiences to live with that. It was a memorable, adventurous, enthralling and a must do trip. Perhaps I go again next year but will surely go once again. The journey is enriched with so many adventures, surprises, phenomenon which we didn’t experience through this journey. You hear different experiences and stories from fellow riders which make it more exciting. So do it as soon as possible to have an experience for life.
