Whisky Review Time --- Paul John Select Cask Indian Single Malt

India is not known as a whisky producing country. Scotland, sure, Kentucky, definitely, but India hasn't exactly earned a reputation for making great whisky which is unfortunate, because I will say up front this is a great whisky. India actually has quite a long history of whisky making going back to the 19th century when India was a British colony. The Scots brought whisky to India, setting distilleries all over the country to supply British soldiers and merchants with their daily drink. The Paul John distillery is located in Goa which is on the west coast of southern India.

John Distilleries is a very new business relatively speaking, first making blended whiskys upon opening in 1992 and not making a single malt until 2008.

Paul John Single Malt Select Cask is made with a mash bill of malted barely, aged in ex bourbon barrels for 7 years, and has an alcohol content of 55.2%. Being a select cask means that it is specially bottled from what the master distiller believes to be the best casks after sampling, which are then blended.

When I bought a bottle of this it had a retail price of around $100 but it was on clearance sale for $40. This made me wonder if I made a mistake as I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my father. Fortunately this turned out to be a good purchase because this whisky is fantastic! Upon nosing I get very delightful aromas of fresh fruits such as apples and pears with some dried fruits like raisins and prunes. It is very sweet smelling, and like it's smell it is also very sweet tasting. Upon tasting again I get notes of fresh apples and pears, sherry, honey, some oak, maybe a little cinnamon, and a good amount of bready flavor from the malted barley. The flavors of it are very rich, very bold, and very complex which is something that I like when it comes to whisky or whiskey. All around it's flavor profile is very delightful. It finishes with a nice peppery burn that warms the mouth all the way to the stomach. That would be the 55.2 % alcohol, which is a bit higher than most whiskies. Regardless the burn is not overwhelming but very pleasant and mellow, which is a sign of a good whiskey. I know in other reviews I complained that a whiskey was too boozy, but in the case of bad whiskies the alcohol overwhelms any flavors, making it just burny cheap alcoholic nastiness. With this whisky the higher proof complements and enhances the flavors. I rate it 4.9 out of 5. My only complaint is that it is hard to find, and if I do find it, I'm probably not going to be able to buy it for $40 again.

  Welcome to our inaugural episode of Liquid Luggage brought to you by our friends at PM Brokerage. On this installment and future ones, we will explore interesting spirits and other beverages from the around the world. Most often, these will be unique and interesting craft expressions. We’ll taste ‘em and talk about ‘em. Also, look for cocktail demos, recipes, and more!

This time around, we are at the Grapeful Ape, a fine new cocktail bar and bottle shop located in Old Mandeville about 40 minutes north of downtown New Orleans. We’re joined by spirits consultant, educator, and broker, Phil Minissale (our co-host in this endeavor) of PM Brokerage and Paul Calecas, head bartender of Grapeful Ape.

Here’s what we explore on this episode:

Mahon Gin

The distillate used is grape not grain, which makes this gin truly gluten-free, from start to finish. How to pronounce the distillery name Xoriguer: “sho-ri-gair,” found on the island of Manorca in Spain. Each batch is crafted exclusively for the USA. The juniper berries are sea-salt air-aged for up to 4 years in open crates at the distillery, thus concentrating the flavors and delivering a smooth gin, without bitterness. Two of the wood-fired Alembic stills are 70+ years old, another is 125+ years old and the last one is 270 years old!

Amrut Whisky

Amrut Distilleries Ltd is the king of Indian Single Malt Whiskies. It is best known for its eponymous Amrut brand of single malt whisky, which is the first single malt to be made in India. The core range of Indian Single Malt Whiskies includes Single Malt 46%, Cask Strength, Peated, and Peated Cask Strength, whiskies to be enjoyed often!

El Buho Mezcal

in 2007, NY-based Michelin star chef and mezcal connoisseur, TJ Steele, found the source provider for an excellent Espadín mezcal at the Don Isaac Distillery. It is owned and operated by the 5th generation Jimenez Mendez family.  This Espadín is perfect neat, but also priced accordingly for the cocktail menu. It’s also perfect and versatile for the home bar. It still remains as a single family Mezcal producer. 

A Wild Night in Oaxaca

1.5oz El Buho Mezcal (Espadín) .5oz Granada Vallet .5oz Casa D’Aristi Xtabentún .5oz Lime Juice .25oz Agave Nectar 2 dashes Bittermens Hellfire

Shake and double strain into a rocks glass with a lime peel garnish.

Some Assembly Required

1.5oz Mahon gin .5oz butterfly pea syrup .25oz lemon 3oz Fentimans Tonic Water 18.21 citrus-Japanese chile bitters

Serve with big ice in a wine glass, lemon peel garnish.

Butterfly Pea Syrup

2cups sugar 2cups water 1Tbsp butterfly pea flowers

Combine everything in a pot and cook until the sugar is dissolved. Let cool and strain into container of your choice.

A Res At Dorsia

1.5oz Estancia Raicilla 1oz Cocchi Americano .25oz satsuma-vanilla syrup Bittermens Xocolatl Mole Bitters

Stir with ice and strain into a rocks glass with large ice. Garnish with satsuma peel.

Welcome to The GreatDrams Review of 2019, a time for me to have a swift light hearted reflection of the year that was and my personal highlights of the year.

Well what a year it has been; Boris Johnson became Prime Minister – and royally wasted everyone’s time and energy, Brexit is still a thing and is still polluting our lives on an hourly basis, my beloved Liverpool FC won the Champions League and only narrowly lost out on the Premiership – something I hope they can rectify this year, our boy Archie has continued to grow into a fantastically energetic boy who loves being awake early and not giving us a break from his Duracell-like energy levels, our village – Poynton – flooded again which was quite disconcerting and the world, of course, is even more fractured than it was last year.

Crazy to even start reflecting on most of the above, but thankfully I only need to reflect on GreatDrams, and of course what’s been going on in whisky. 

I say it every year, but this year has been amongst my busiest;

Some particular highlights

Meeting so many really passionate whisky drinkers at the events we have been doing with our own independently bottled whiskies, hearing such great feedback and seeing the bottles fly off the shelves – our Christmas limited edition especially as it sold out before we even got to the 10th November! 

Getting to visit India and Delhi for the first time – a place that can only be described as ‘synchronised chaos’

Visiting Kentucky again, albeit briefly (one day!) was superb

Visiting China twice in twelve weeks was quite intense… I know Shanghai surprisingly well now

Spending time with so many icons of the whisky world including, but not limited to Dr. Bill Lumsden, Richard Patterson, John McCheyne, Fraser Campbell, Stephanie Macleod, Ewan Gunn, Stephen Rankin, Billy Leighton and Brian Nation

Along with all these stunning whiskies and a very busy year, we have seen Scotch exports up, volumes up and huge investment into new and expanding distillery operations throughout Scotland and Ireland in particular, with many new distilleries opening up in England too.

2020 looks to be another busy year with many new distilleries having spirit old enough to start releasing their first bottlings after three or more years of patience, and I’m sure a degree of nervous anticipation.
