59. Someone told me that if you take a pure cold bath for 15-30 min and lower your body temp, your body burns around 200 cals for every degree it has to raise itself to reach a normal body temperture. This person tried it, a 30 min bath lowered their temp about 3-4 degrees

Story at-a-glance
Alcohol consumption is linked to an increased risk of gout. A study found men who drink have a 69% higher risk compared to non-drinkers, while women showed no similar association
Gout occurs when your body produces uric acid faster than itâs able to eliminate it. Alcohol, especially beer, contributes significantly to elevated uric acid levels in the blood
Exercise, particularly at low- to moderate-intensity, helps manage uric acid levels. It produces anti-inflammatory effects that reduce responses caused by uric acid crystals and offers additional health benefits
Avoiding processed sugar, especially high-fructose corn syrup, is crucial in managing uric acid levels. Fructose stimulates pathways that produce uric acid from amino acid precursors
Natural remedies like applying citrates to affected joints and consuming quercetin can help relieve gout symptoms. Quercetin's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties reduce uric acid production and increase excretion

The (Real) Stardew Valley Farm
So a year and a half ago we bought a house, AKA the real life habitat ring. I swear the yard came with every single non-aquatic invasive plant weâve got. Slowly but surely weâve been murdering all the Japanese honeysuckle and poison hemlock, tearing up a truly inhumane amount of weed barrier and pea gravel, and adding truckloads of wood chips and other organic matter to start to repair the soil. Our goal is to replace everything with mostly native plants with an emphasis on food production.
But of course I needed more of a challenge. I love playing Stardew Valley. Itâs really the only video game I play. And somewhere I got the idea, âHey, wouldnât it be cool to grow everything in Stardew Valley in our yard?â So here we are. Obviously I donât live on some magical land with perfect weather, a giant greenhouse, and a second farm on a tropical island, so I have to make plenty of substitutions. Iâm also trying to grow native plants whenever possible. Any suggestions are welcome!
2021
Amaranth - Native white amaranth (the birds love it!)
Grape - Native riverbank grapes (so many grapes) and some green cultivated variety from the neighbors
Dandelion - Obviously
Maple Tree - Native silver, red, and sugar maples (also an invasive Norway maple but we chopped it down)
Pine Tree - Not sure what kind of pines they are
Apple Tree - Not in great shape. Iâd love an Enterprise apple tree at some point
Coffee Bean - Chicory (maybe thatâs cheating, but itâs a naturalized plant commonly used as a coffee substitute)
Salmonberry - Not native to the Midwest, so weâre sticking with native black raspberries. Weâll likely add some pink/yellow raspberries later though
2022
Kale
Rhubarb
Strawberry - Both cultivated and native
Tulip
Radish
Tomato
Beet
Eggplant
Fairy Rose - Not a real thing so I substituted the native prairie rose
Cranberries - Native cranberry viburnum
Orange Tree -Native persimmons, which produce orange fruit
Daffodil
Spring Onion - Native nodding onions and also green onions indoors
Spice Berry - Native spicebushes
Wild Plum - Native
Hazelnut - Native
Crocus
Cherry Tree - Native black cherries and nonnative bush cherries
Tea Leaves - Native New Jersey Tea bush
Banana Tree - Native pawpaws, which are also known as Indiana bananas
Mango Tree - One of the pawpaws is a named variety called mango so I think that counts
Ginger - Attempted native wild ginger, which I donât think survived, but am also growing ginger indoors
Green Bean
Sweet Gem Berry - Native Juneberry (Downy Serviceberry) which are a redish color
Planned for 2023
Blue Jazz - Not real so I went with the native Ozark Bluestar, which seems similar enough
Garlic
Parsnip
Apricot Tree - Native passionflower vine. Not a tree, but it is known as wild apricot
Blueberry
Sunflower - Both native and non-native sunflowers
Pineapple - Neither my spouse nor I like pineapples, so weâre going with white strawberries known as pineberries that are said to have a tropical taste
Pumpkin
Melon
Wild Horseradish - Except Iâll be growing it in a pot because it tends to get a little too wild for my tastes
Holly - Native winterberry holly
Oak Tree - Native dwarf chinquapin oak
Sweet Pea
Hot Pepper
Palm Tree - Obviosuly not going to work here but there is a native palm sedge that Iâll plant instead
Planned for 2024
Potato
Corn
Hops - Hoping to get a cutting from a native hops vine (if the local beer people donât kill me)
Winter Root - Iâm gonna go with native ground nuts because you can dig up the roots in winter
Poppy - Hopefully native wood poppy
Red Cabbage
Artichoke - Native Jerusalem artichokes
Cactus Fruit - Native prickly pear cactus
Yam
Bok Choy
Leek
Fiddlehead Fern
Blackberry
Crystal Fruit - Iâm gonna go with honey berries, which produce fruit earlier than anything else
Ancient Fruit - Native Aronia berries are the only thing I can think of for this one. Theyâre blue(ish) and have lots of antioxidants so you live to be ancient
Figuring Out Substitutes
Rice
Wheat
Starfruit - Not really sure how to swing this one, so suggestions are welcome
Summer Spangle - Not real, so Iâm open to suggestions of native plants. Possibly prairie lily? It has a similar-ish shape, is orange, and blooms in summer
Qi Fruit - Creepy little man
Taro Root - I would have to plant it in pots
Morel - I wish I could grow this
All the other mushrooms - I think Iâll just ignore any varieties and just try plugs or similar
Snow Yam
Cave Carrot - Trying to find a native carrot substitute
Coconut - I shouldnât count this separately from palm trees, right?
Mahogany Tree
Peach Tree
Pomegranate Tree - There are Russian pomegranates that are hardy to zone 6, which just might work with climate change
#I make bad decisions but at least the wildlife love me#donât be a petaq grow native plants#gardening#stardew valley#sdv#the habitat ring#the (real) stardew valley farm

Coffee aficionado
Coffee is so much more than just a drink; it's a way of life. You may receive an introduction to how vast and varied the world of coffee actually is by looking through some of the top coffee blogs available.Perhaps you're a newbie whose crush is quickly developing into something more serious. Or perhaps you're a connoisseur with a hunger for information about brewing methods. Many of these blogs have experienced it, and they zealously offer advice, comparisons, and experiments that will have you producing excellent craft beers in no time. Some other blogs, which concentrate on coffee-forward international travel itineraries and coffee destinations and introduce you to the people behind them, are driven by the social side of coffee. Coffee and community go hand in hand.
Certainly! Coffee is a popular and beloved beverage enjoyed by millions of people around the world. Its rich history, diverse varieties, cultivation methods, and health effects make it a fascinating subject for a blog post. Here's some information you can include in your blog about coffee:
1. History and Origins: Coffee's history dates back centuries to the ancient coffee forests of Ethiopia. The legend of the discovery of coffee by a goat herder named Kaldi adds a charming touch to its origins. Coffee cultivation and trade spread from Africa to the Middle East and eventually to Europe and the rest of the world.
2. Coffee Varieties: There are two main species of coffee beans: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica beans are known for their nuanced flavors and aromatic qualities, while Robusta beans are often used in espresso blends due to their higher caffeine content and bold flavor.
3. Coffee Growing Regions: Coffee is grown in various regions around the world, each imparting unique flavors to the beans. Some well-known coffee-growing countries include Ethiopia, Colombia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Kenya, and Indonesia. The concept of "terroir" is relevant here, as the soil, climate, and altitude influence the final flavor profile of the coffee.
4. Coffee Processing: After coffee cherries are harvested, they undergo processing to extract the beans. Different methods, such as washed, natural, and honey processes, affect the flavor and characteristics of the coffee. This is a crucial step in determining the final taste of the brew.
5. Roasting: Roasting is an art that transforms green coffee beans into the aromatic, flavorful beans used for brewing. The roast level impacts the coffee's taste, with lighter roasts preserving more of the bean's origin flavors and darker roasts producing bolder, smokier notes.
6. Brewing Methods: There are numerous ways to brew coffee, each influencing the taste and texture of the final cup. Some popular methods include drip brewing, French press, pour-over, espresso, AeroPress, and cold brew. Each method extracts different compounds from the coffee grounds, resulting in distinct flavors.
7. Coffee and Health: Coffee has been studied extensively for its potential health effects. It contains antioxidants and can be linked to various benefits, such as improved cognitive function, enhanced physical performance, and a reduced risk of certain diseases. However, excessive consumption can lead to negative effects like insomnia, jitteriness, and digestive issues.
8. Coffee Culture: Coffee has a significant cultural impact worldwide. It's not just a beverage; it's often a social experience. Cafés and coffeehouses are gathering places for people to relax, work, and connect. Different cultures have their own unique coffee traditions and rituals.
9. Sustainable Coffee: As the coffee industry grows, concerns about environmental sustainability and fair labor practices have become more important. Fair trade and direct trade practices aim to ensure that coffee farmers receive fair compensation for their work and that the environment is protected.
10. Coffee Trends: The coffee world is always evolving. Trends like specialty coffee, single-origin beans, and alternative milk options (such as almond, oat, and soy milk) have gained popularity. Staying up to date with these trends can help you understand the current coffee landscape.

Black Forest Honey: A German Folklore and Tradition
In Germany, the Black Forest is a well-known holiday destination. The region is home to many different traditions and folklore, one of which is the production of Black Forest honey.
The honey is made using a traditional method that has been passed down from generation to generation of beekeepers.Â
The bees collect nectar from the flowers of the Black Forest, which gives the honey its unique flavour. Black Forest honey's flavour and aroma can range from sweet and syrupy to spicy and earthy, depending on the flowers used. It is thick and a distinctive dark brown tint.
The History and Folklore of Black Forest Honey
The region of Black Forest in Germany has a long history and tradition with honey. For centuries, this honey has been used for both culinary and medicinal purposes in the region. In German folklore, it was believed that a good beekeeper could bring luck, health, and fortune to a family. It was also seen as protection from thunder and lightning, which was very important in the area.
The production of black forest honey in Germany did not begin until the late 1700s when forestry expanded greatly and local beekeepers started to produce honey from the native linden, acacia and chestnut flowers in the area.
In modern times, black forest honey is seen as a symbol of German pride and tradition. It is used in a variety of recipes, especially desserts and baked goods. It is also used in many health and beauty products, such as soaps, lotions, and lip balms. In addition to this, Black Forest honey has been used in religious ceremonies in Germany for centuries. During the festivities of Walpurgis Night, Black Forest honey was often used to sweeten the food that was served. It was also a popular ingredient in traditional German wedding cakes.
Black Forest honey has also been the subject of many folk tales that have been passed down through generations. One such story tells of a giant who lived deep in the Black Forest and used chunks of honeycomb to sweeten his beer.
The Benefits of Black Forest Honey

For example, one study found that moderate beer drinkers had a lower risk of developing Alzheimerâs disease than those who didnât drink beer. Another study found that beer drinkers had higher levels of âgoodâ cholesterol and a lower risk of stroke.
So, whatâs behind these brain-boosting benefits of beer? One theory is that the hops in beer contain compounds that can protect your brain cells from damage. The alcohol in beer may also help to reduce inflammation and improve blood flow to the brain.
Of course, itâs important to drink in moderation. Too much alcohol can actually have negative effects on your brain, so itâs best to stick to one or two drinks per day.
6. The cancer-preventing benefits of beer
It's no secret that alcohol consumption can lead to an increased risk of cancer. But, surprisingly, beer may actually help protect against the disease. A new study has found that beer may contain cancer-preventing properties. The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Texas, looked at the effects of beer on colon cancer cells. The results showed that beer was effective at inhibiting the growth of cancer cells.
The study's lead author, Dr. Dinshaw Patel, said that the findings suggest that beer may help protect against colon cancer. 'Our findings show that beer has the potential to inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells,' he said. 'This is the first study to our knowledge that has looked at the effects of beer on colon cancer cells.'
The study's findings are preliminary, and more research is needed to confirm the link between beer and cancer prevention. However, the findings do provide some evidence that beer may be a promising cancer-prevention strategy. So, next time you're reaching for a cold one, you can feel good knowing that you may be doing your body a favor.
7. The bone-strengthening benefits of beer
There's no denying that beer has a bit of a reputation as a party beverage. But what you may not know is that beer can actually have some bone-strengthening benefits. That's right, the same beverage that can help you relax and enjoy a night out with friends can also help keep your bones healthy and strong.
Beer is rich in silicon, which is a key nutrient for healthy bones. Silicon helps to promote bone growth and density, and it's also thought to help reduce the risk of osteoporosis. In fact, studies have shown that people who consume silicon-rich foods and beverages, like beer, have a lower risk of developing osteoporosis.
So, if you're looking for a way to improve your bone health, you may want to consider adding beer to your diet. Just be sure to drink in moderation and to choose a beer that is rich in silicon. Cheers to your health!

Gluten-free food options
Ever wondered if that ice-cold Coco-Cola you were eying up is gluten-free? Ever wanted to know if pizza and pasta are gluten-free? How about your favorite cheeseburger and fries? How about the Vodka and Beer? Whatever it is that you are looking for, we got you covered in this list of gluten-free foods. A gluten-free foods list can be a valuable resource. You have been spending hours and hours navigating stores and restaurants to find gluten-free food options and it may be really challenging at times. Therefore on hand, the gluten-free foods list below might help you know what to look for (and what to look out for) when choosing grains and other foods that may contain gluten. Below are a few things to look out for when you're buying gluten-free foods. 1. Gluten-Free Whole Grains: Oats, Cereals, Bread, and MoreâŠ
Grains (including bread, pasta, rice, and crackers), specifically whole grains, are an important part of a healthy diet. Whole grains are a good source of healthy carbohydrates, providing energy to get you through the day. Most whole grains are high in fiber, which keeps you full and helps with digestion. Though many grains have gluten, a wide variety is naturally gluten-free.
Naturally Gluten-Free Grains & Starches: Rice Quinoa Millet Oats (use oats labeled "gluten-free," as oats are often cross-contaminated with wheat and barley.) Cassava/Yuca Sorghum Teff Corn Buckwheat Amaranth Potatoes and potato flour
2. Gluten-Free Vegetables & Fruits All fresh, whole vegetables and fruits are naturally gluten-free and important to include in a gluten-free diet. Organic local produce mostly delivers a variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. However, you need to look out for sneaky gluten once you move out of the produce aisle. Plain fresh and frozen (without sauce) vegetables are all gluten-free, but make sure to double-check ingredient lists on packages to be sure. When buying canned veggies, buy those packed with water or natural juices (typically the healthier option anyway). Here's what to look out for when selecting gluten-free fruit and vegetables.
What to Avoid When Shopping for Fruits and Vegetables: Hydrolyzed wheat protein Modified food starch: Check the label if it does not specify what type of starch is used, and check with the manufacturer, as it may be wheat. Malt: Including malt syrup, malt vinegar, malt extract, malt flavoring Gluten stabilizer Maltodextrin: This is OK when made from corn, potato, or rice starch. If it is made from wheat, it will be labeled: you may have a reaction, though many claim the gluten is destroyed in processing.
Safe Ingredients: Corn-starch Potato starch/potato starch flour Distilled vinegar Mono- and diglycerides Oat gum Citric acid, lactic acid, and malic acid
3. Gluten-Free Proteins Most protein sources-both animal and vegetable proteins-are naturally gluten-free. You may use the below list to help you decide which proteins can fit into a gluten-free diet. Naturally Gluten-Free Proteins: Red meat: Fresh beef, pork, lamb, goat, bison, duck, etc. (Avoid marinades as if gluten is added it might sneak into your meat) Poultry: Fresh chicken and turkey (Check if any marination is added) Seafood: Fresh fish, scallops, lobster, clams and more are all naturally gluten-free. (Check if any marination is added) Tofu: It's made from soy, which is gluten-free, but check for any additional ingredients with gluten. Beans Nuts and seeds
Proteins That Need a Second Look: Processed meats: Including hot dogs, pepperoni, sausage, etc. These may have gluten added, so be sure to check the ingredient list and avoid those with wheat gluten, wheat starch, or wheat dextrin. Cold cuts: Cross-contamination can also happen at the deli on the meat slicer. Cold cuts may have gluten-containing ingredients added Ground meat: Ground beef or ground turkey can have gluten added in as filler. Be sure to check the ingredients carefully. Veggie burgers and other meat substitutes: Some flavors and brands are made with ingredients that contain gluten-check the labels.
4. Gluten-Free Sauces, Spices, and Condiments In many common condiments, gluten-containing ingredients can be used as thickeners, stabilizers, or flavor enhancers. Wheat flour is a common thickener in many sauces and marinades, which means they contain gluten. Look out for cross-contamination once these items are in your home. For example, a knife that spreads mustard on wheat bread shouldn't be dipped back into the mustard jar if you want it to stay gluten-free.
Sauces, Spices, and Condiments That Are Usually Safe: Mustard: Some specialty or flavored mustards may contain gluten so always check the ingredients. Mayonnaise: Check the ingredients to be sure though typically not made with gluten. Dry spices: Single-ingredient herbs and spices (think dried basil, garlic powder, chili powder) do not contain gluten, though because of cross-contamination concerns it's best to look for specifically labeled gluten-free spices or check with the manufacturer.
Sauces, Spices, and Condiments That Need a Second Look: Ketchup and Worcestershire sauce: Both condiments can be made using malt vinegar, which is not gluten-free. Double-check the ingredients. Barbecue sauce: Avoid BBQ sauces made with barley-based beer, soy sauce, malt vinegar, and barley malt flour as these typically contain gluten. Soy sauce: Soy sauce is traditionally made with wheat, so it usually is not gluten-free unless otherwise marked. Malt vinegar: Malt vinegar is mostly found in some salad dressings and sauces and it's not gluten-free. However, white vinegar, distilled vinegar, and apple cider vinegar are all gluten-free.
5. Gluten-Free Desserts & Sweets Many sweets and desserts are made with wheat flour or other ingredients with gluten. Be mindful that gluten-free sweets are not necessarily healthier for you than regular treats but they might prevent a bad reaction if you are sensitive to gluten.
Sweets That Are Usually Safe: Chocolate: Chocolate does not naturally contain gluten. There is also a risk of cross-contamination, so it's best to check the label on the chocolate. Hard candy and gummies: Candies donât usually contain gluten; avoid those listing "wheat flour" as an ingredient. Ice cream, sherbet, gelato, frozen yogurt: These treats are generally gluten-free, but steer clear of those with pretzels, cookie dough, graham crackers, brownie bites, and other gluten-containing add-ins. Sweets to Avoid: Grain-based desserts: Cookies, cakes, brownies, pies, doughnuts, pastries, cheesecake, etc. are almost always made with gluten unless marked "gluten-free." Licorice: Sweet candy may be made with wheat flour and therefore is not gluten-free unless otherwise noted on the packaging. Barley malt: Avoid sweets made with this ingredient, which is used to sweeten some candies and chocolates.
6. Gluten-Free Drinks and Beverages Water, of course, is naturally gluten-free and is your best healthy way to stay hydrated. For all prepared beverages, be sure to check the ingredients, as variations and blends may contain gluten.
Drinks and Beverages That Are Usually Safe: âą Coffee and tea: These beverages are both naturally gluten-free, but if you're sensitive to gluten it's best to check and make sure there was no cross-contamination with your coffee beans or tea leaves or added ingredients in blended beverages. âą Juices, sodas, and sports drinks: Check the label to be safe, but these generally won't have added gluten-containing ingredients
