Promoting A Film
So, you've finally made that great film you've wrote to show to the whole world. You spent time writing your masterpiece screenplay, raised the capital, scouted locations, hired your family members as crew members and took on your best friend playing the lead role in your movie. You took time editing the film to make it look like Steven Spielberg directed the film. So now what? Does one simply stand on the side of the road trying to sell the film on DVD from the back of one's car? (I've heard stories). No of course not, but there are ways to sell your film either as a self-distributor or selling it to a distributor to be released at the box office. Here are some steps to help market one's film.
A press release. A press release is simply telling news readers about you and your film, with an attached photo(s) to be shown. It talks about the cast of who's in it, the director, and the plot of your film. Try local newspapers in your area first before branching out.
Social Media. I love social media and the powerful use it has in this generation of posting newsworthy content that expands globally. Simply create a fan page on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and other platforms. Make sure to engage with the community on there so that they are part of the marketing campaign. Post videos and behind the scenes footage of your film too.
Website. Yes, please build a website about one's film and production company. Filmmaking isn't just an artist's expression, but a business. So why not let other see what your film and production company is about to help attract both investors and movie-goers.
4. Film festivals. I love going to film festivals and promoting a film that is ready to be seen by a panel of judges and fellow filmmakers. Film festivals is a great place to submit a completed film to be seen by distributors and studios from around the world. One can also meet and greet fellow filmmakers and screenwriters to see their work as well. Hand out business cards, exchange social media contacts and begin the process of networking in Hollywood. More recently, I personally became a board member of the Bedford International Film Festival in Bedford, Virginia to help promote creative culture in Bedford. (Link below). Also, go to Film Freeway's website, where one can submit a completed film and screenplay to any film festival worldwide. The Bedford International Film Festival is on there as well and one has until May 15th to submit both script and film(s).
5. Podcast. If one knows someone that owns a podcast channel, it is a great way to promote your film to listeners. Podcasts are now owned by celebrities who interview their guests who are celebrities, athletes, and other newsworthy people.
6. Radio. Who said radio was dead? There are a ton of radio stations out there to be featured in as a guest to talk about one's film. Make a call with your local station to see if an interview can be made and help promote one's film that way.
7. Local news. Being on the news is great and a wonderful way in promoting one's film. It builds up a positive image of the city one lives in and helps push the idea that any film can be made anywhere. Contact the local news stations via email or phone call to set up an interview.
Well, that is all seven ideas on how to promote and market one's film to help gain attention to one's work as a independent filmmaker. Please feel free to follow me on Tumblr and other social media platforms. Leave a comment below don't forget to submit one's completed film and screenplay to the Bedford Film Festival.

“I can’t believe this is happening in Bedford.”
…is a sentence I have said a lot over the past few years.
I think that I first said it at the We Are Bedford Weekender way back in 2011, when thousands of people flocked to the town to see art, music and theatre staged in the -then- empty shops along Castle Lane.
I probably then said it during The Bedford Fringe Festival  an event that brings incredible, award winning theatre, comedy and music shows to our doorsteps on a yearly basis.
I most likely said it during the TASTE festival, where Bedfordians are treated to a huge range of  delicious global food choices. I most likely said it during the recent Kite Festival. The Bedford Film Festival. The River Festival. The NICE Comic Con. I  also probably say it when another  internationally celebrated musician puts on a legendary gig at Esquires or at the huge Park Concerts events.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have definitely  said “I can’t believe this is happening in Bedford.” to Racheal Rogan- organiser of Bedford’s own Booktastic Children’s Book Festival, owner of the great ‘Rogan’s Books’, and general all-round local Super Hero- and I have said it to her a fair few times too.
In fact, I say it to Racheal each year during Booktastic, a day when Racheal and her team of tireless volunteers put on a world class literary experience that attracts young and old readers from across the county (and beyond) and brings world renowned authors and illustrators to our beautiful town.
The truth is that I say “I can’t believe this is happening in Bedford.” all the time at the moment.
And I’m sure that you will agree that it’s probably high time for me to just stop saying it.
Thanks to people like Racheal, who work so hard and with so much passion and desire to make incredible things happen in our town, there seems to be so many amazing things going on all the time right now in Bedford.
So at this years BookTastic,- which took place this past weekend at the marvellous Quarry Theatre - I decided NOT to say “I can’t believe this is happening in Bedford”, not even when I was wowed by the incredible creative talent performing-  such as the award winning and best selling authors  Phillip Reeve, A.F. Harrold, James Nichol, Christopher Edge, Steve Cole, Simon James Green and Sarah McIntyre.
Instead, I said something along the lines of: “Of course this is happening in Bedford. It’s Bedford after all. And BRILLIANT things happen in Bedford”.
And I think that’s what I’m going to say from now on too.
Tumblr media
Anyway, now that’s been settled, I would like to say one last thing about the joyous Booktastic Children’s Book Festival that we just enjoyed last Saturday.
Over the past few years I have been lucky enough  attend a number of Book Festivals all across the country. From the brightly coloured playfulness of the Bath Children’s Literature Festival, to the historic delight of the Stratford-upon-Avon Literary Festival, to the elegant cool of the Edinburgh International Book Festival and the eclectic bonhomie of the Cheltenham Literature Festival.
Each Festival has its own unique charm that captures the essence and character of its location.
And Booktastic is no different.
The community of people that bring this festival together, with a desire to make something special happen in a beautiful location for a diverse array of people, is- I feel- absolutely capturing the spirit of our great town.
And that  is why Booktastic  will always be one of my absolute favourite book festivals and one of the highlights of my year.
And it all happens right here in my hometown.
But then, of course it does. It’s Bedford after all. And BRILLIANT things happen in Bedford.
:)

By the way, the pictures are of the ‘Grandad’s Secret Giant’ drawing myself and visitors to the festival drew throughout the day, including contributions from Phillip Reeve, A.F. Harrold, James Nichol, Mique Moriuchi and Sarah McIntyre and lots of very talented, great kids and grown ups.

Omar Epps
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Omar Hashim Epps (born July 20, 1973) is an American actor, rapper, songwriter, and record producer. His film roles include Major League II, Juice, Higher Learning, Scream 2, The Wood, In Too Deep, and Love and Basketball. His television work includes the role of Dr. Dennis Gant on the medical drama series ER, J. Martin Bellamy in Resurrection and Dr. Eric Foreman on the Fox medical drama series House from 2004 to 2012.
Early life
Epps was born in Brooklyn, New York. His parents divorced during his childhood and he was raised by his mother, Bonnie Maria Epps, an elementary school principal. He lived in several neighborhoods while growing up (Bedford-Stuyvesant, East New York and East Flatbush 90's). Before he started acting, he belonged to a rap group called Wolfpack which he formed with his cousin in 1991. He began writing poetry, short stories and songs at the age of ten and attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.
Career
Early in Epps's career, he was most often cast in the roles of troubled teens and/or athletes. He made his feature film debut with rapper Tupac Shakur as the star of cinematographer Ernest Dickerson's directorial film debut Juice. The film is the violent and tragic story of four young men growing up in Harlem.
Epps followed up his performance in Juice as a running back in the college football drama The Program alongside James Caan.
Epps starred in the film "Deadly Voyage" produced by John Goldschmidt for HBO Pictures and BBC Films, and won the best actor award at the Monte Carlo Television Festival for portraying Kingsley Ofusu in this true story about African stowaways.
The following year, he switched to baseball as co-star of Major League II, taking over the role of Willie Mays Hayes from originator Wesley Snipes. His next athletic endeavor was playing a track and field star in John Singleton's Higher Learning, a look at the politics and racial tensions of college life.
Epps landed a role on the hit television drama ER for several episodes portraying Dr. Dennis Gant, a troubled surgical intern. After his television work on ER, Epps returned to the big screen in 1997 with a brief turn as a giddy moviegoer on a date with a woman played by Jada Pinkett, who ends up an early victim of a psycho slasher in the blockbuster sequel Scream 2. Also in 1997 Epps was the star of the fact-based HBO movie First Time Felon. He played a small-time criminal who goes through Chicago's boot camp reform system and undertakes a heroic flood rescue, only to then be faced with the adjustment of re-entering society with the mark of ex-con. In 1999 Epps was cast as Linc in The Mod Squad.
While The Mod Squad proved a critical and box-office bust, Epps's later 1999 effort The Wood offered him a serious and multi-dimensional role. Following a group of middle-class African Americans from youth to adulthood, The Wood, the debut effort from director-screenwriter Rick Famuyiwa, co-starred Richard T. Jones and Taye Diggs and received a push from co-producers MTV Films that ensured turnout of a sizable youth audience. Also in 1999, Epps was featured alongside Stanley Tucci and LL Cool J, playing an undercover detective who finds himself dangerously caught up in the illegal goings-on he is investigating in In Too Deep. 1999 also saw him lens the 1950s set murder mystery When Willows Touch, with James Earl Jones and Jada Pinkett Smith.
In 2000, Epps starred in Love & Basketball, featuring Alfre Woodard and Sanaa Lathan. He portrayed Quincy, the NBA hopeful who has a stormy relationship with an equally adept female basketball star Monica (Sanaa Lathan). The actor held supporting roles in a series of films, including Dracula 2000, Big Trouble, and the telepic Conviction. In this year he also had a leading role as a gangster inBrother, a movie by acclaimed Japanese actor/director Takeshi Kitano.
In 2004, Epps landed the role of drug-dealer-turned-prizefighter Luther Shaw, who falls under the tutelage of boxing promoter Jackie Kallen (Meg Ryan) in the biopic Against the Ropes.
Epps was a character in the video game Def Jam Fight for NY in 2004.
Also in 2004, Epps returned to television medical drama with his role as Dr. Eric Foreman on the Fox television series House. The role earned him a NAACP Image Award in 2007, 2008 and 2013 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. In 2014, Epps took on the role of agent J. Martin Bellamy in the ABC television series, Resurrection. The series focuses on a number of individuals who return from the dead, and change the lives of their families and friends in Arcadia, Missouri.
Personal life
Epps married Keisha Spivey from the R&B group Total in 2006. They live in California with daughter K'mari Mae (born July 2004) and son Amir (born December 2007). He also has a daughter, Aiyanna, from a previous relationship. His sister, Aisha Epps, lives in Brooklyn, NY. Omar dated actress Sanaa Lathan 1999-2003 before reuniting with Spivey.
Epps is popularly known for a resemblance to Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. This resemblance was once referenced on an episode of
House
in November 2009, in the season 6, eighth episode, "Ignorance Is Bliss". House mentions feeling like Mike Tomlin because of having his team back, but probably not as much as Foreman (Epps' character).

1967
The continued presence of American troops increased further and a total of 475,000 were serving in Vietnam. The peace rallies were multiplying as the number of protesters against the war increased. In the middle east, Israel also went to war with Syria, Egypt and Jordan in the six-day war, and when it was over Israel controlled and occupied a lot more territory than before the war. In the summer, cities throughout America exploded in rioting and looting, the worst being in Detroit on July 23, where 7,000 national guards were bought in to restore law and order on the streets. In England, a new type of model became a fashion sensation by the name of Twiggy, and miniskirts continued to get shorter and even more popular. Also during this year, new discotheques and singles bars appeared across cities around the world, and the Beatles continued to reign supreme with the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. 1967 was coined the “Summer of Love” when young teenagers got friendly, smoked pot and grooved to the music of the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and the Byrds. The movie industry moved with the times and produced movies that would appeal to this younger audience, including The Graduate, Bonnie and Clyde, and Cool Hand Luke. TV shows included The Fugitive and The Monkees, and color television sets became popular as the price came down and more programs were made in color.
Major events
• Arab forces attack Israel, beginning the Yom Kippur War.
• Ariel-3, the first all-British made satellite, was launched into an orbit around the Earth during May. The satellite was launched with the help of NASA from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, and it carried five experiments from British universities. The experiments measured atmospheric noise, high altitude oxygen levels, low frequency radiation, medium frequency waves, and electron density and temperature. After its launch it orbited the Earth every 95 minutes and relayed data back to the United Kingdom until 1970, when it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere.
• The first successful human-to-human heart transplant takes place in December. Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the operation on the 53-year-old patient Louis Washkansky. The operation took place at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. The transplant was successful and Washkansky’s body did not reject the organ, although he did die just 18 days later due to double pneumonia brought on by the immunosuppressive drugs that he had to take. Lynn Novick's College Behind Bars is a Spotlight on Documentary selection at the 57th New York Film Festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center from Friday, September 27 – Sunday, October 13. See ticket info, the schedule, and more: https://filmlinc.org/nyff Out of the more than 50,000 men and 2500 women incarcerated in New York State, only a tiny fraction have access to higher education. The Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) enrolls incarcerated men and women earning Associate and Bachelor’s degrees; it’s a program with wide-ranging benefits, including lower rates of recidivism, and it challenges our prioritization of punishment over education. Veteran filmmaker Lynn Novick, whose producing and directing credits include epochal miniseries Baseball, Jazz, Prohibition, and The Vietnam War, in collaboration with longtime producer Sarah Botstein, have created an intimate documentary event: a four-part chronicle filmed in correctional facilities in Napanoch and Bedford Hills. The film follows a handful of ambitious and inspiring incarcerated students—most of them serving time for serious crimes—as they debate and discuss American history and mathematics, philosophy and science, Moby Dick and King Lear, DuBois and Arendt, and simultaneously navigate the difficulties and cruelties of prison life and attempt to come to terms with their pasts. A PBS release. A centerpiece of New York culture since 1963, the New York Film Festival will introduce the most essential new cinematic works from around the world to U.S. audiences in its Main Slate. NYFF will also continue to feature a variety of titles in different sections and sidebars, including Spotlight on Documentary, newly rejuvenated classics in Restorations and Revivals, a diverse selection of international and locally made Shorts, the ever-expanding experimental showcase Projections, and the immersive storytelling experiences of the cutting-edge Convergence. Additionally, there will be an exciting lineup of special events, free filmmaker talks and panel discussions, and the latest editions of our annual Industry and Critic Academies. A Film Festival with a small-town feel.
When we think of small towns in America, we think of places like Mayberry on the Andy Griffith Show from the 1950s or images of a Norman Rockwell paintings depicting youthful American drinking a malt and having a hamburger. The small towns of America have the values of freedom, openness, charm and tradition that hold true to this day in rural America. Towns in America can be described as boring, and not so rich in culture like museums, art centers, theaters and so on, but there is a change in the horizon when it comes to art culture. What if I were to tell you that a small town in Virginia, which sits between two cities of Roanoke and Lynchburg, called Bedford have a film festival called the Bedford International Film Festival, which is held once a year in early July to promote filmmaker's work on film, documentaries and screenplays to be screened in front of local town folks and other surrounding communities.
The Bedford film festival started five years ago by a film producer and casting director Laura Willoughby, along with her son Robert Ashwell, a writer and filmmaker. Both are natives of this town and began the idea to help promote art and culture in a near fading town, that was once a city. Filmmakers and writers submit their work through a website called www.filmfreeway.com, a site that allows filmmakers to pay submission fees, gain news insights on upcoming events, and search for other film festivals around the world. The Bedford film festival also has many events such writing workshops, filmmaking workshops, acting workshops and the understanding of how the film industry works.
In addition, the film festival also creates events such as Celebrity Chef and actor Jeremy Miller conducting a cooking series from his YouTube channel and having actress Claudia Wells (Jennifer from Back to the Future) attend this year's event.
Tumblr media
The town was established in 1782 after the United States was established as a country (1776), which made many Colonists develop businesses and homesteads. From there on, the town was turned into a city filled with local shops, grocery stores, schools, etc. the town became the City of Bedford. But a short time back, the city later became a town again when its citizens began fleeing the city to other areas of the state, county, and nation from the small-town rural America.
Within the first five years of the film festival, the town has begun to see a small population growth, fueled by Millennials, Gen Zer's and some Gen Xer's to name a few. Homes here in Bedford are quiet more affordable than Roanoke and Lynchburg combined. A few small businesses began to pop up as well, in creating a small economy. One may think that being in a small town has no need for a film festival, well, one might need to rethink that as the organization began marketing and promoting the event, creating excitement within the Bedford and other surrounding communities about the film festival.
If anyone wishes to attend this year's event in Bedford, Virginia, please feel free to check out the flier below and visit our website at www.bedfordfilmfest.com to purchase tickets.
