In terms of, just, understanding the basics of the setting without coming away with really really insane misconceptions: Forbidden Scrollery, Wild and Horned Hermit, the fairies manga (Strange and Bright Nature Deity through Visionary Fairies in Shrine), Perfect Memento in Strict Sense (and Memorizable Gensokyo), Symposium of Post-Mysticism.

In terms of really getting what's going on, all of the above, but add (in descending order of importance): All of ZUN's music CDs (Dolls in Pseudo Paradise through Dateless Bar Old Adam), Curiosities of Lotus Asia, Silent Sinner in Blue and Cage in Lunatic Runagate, A Beautiful Flower Blooming Violet Every Sixty Years, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, Urban Legend in Limbo, Antinomy of Common Flowers, Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream, Grimoire of Usami, Grimoire of Marisa, Alternative Facts in Eastern Utopia, Shoot the Bullet, Double Spoiler, Impossible Spell Card, Violet Detector (these last four you can just read the spellcard comments if you wish, no need to Play It All unless you like pain), Perfect Cherry Blossom, Imperishable Night, Hidden Star in Four Seasons, Lotus Eaters' Sobering. But basically, there is a LOT of Touhou. It hides itself well because it's not all one big work like Umineko or whatever, but there really is a lot of text to get through (and it's dense!) You're not required to read all of this to call yourself a "Touhou fan" or whatever, but if you want to have productive discussions (and some idea of what ZUN's putting down, so you can predict what'll happen next without going wildly off base) these are generally what you need.

BRUNO/ANTINOMY:

Lucario: feels just very much like a good partner Pokemon for him...same shade of blue, very noble and loyal, EXTREME SPEED!! something something Lucario's innate aura reading and ability to sense emotions and thoughts vs. Bruno's complicated quest to figure out who he is. I think they would be friends!!! It gets amnesia too in whatever funny Pokemon AU Bruno's situation happens in

Armarouge: T.G. Halberd Cannon/Blade Blaster type vibes, its pauldrons literally turn into a cannon, fire type echoing the sun in the Antinomy/Yusei duel, also a very loyal Pokemon. Plus bonus counterpart to Primo's Ceruledge >:3c

Rotom: silly little guy who likes motors and electronics and machinery!! Also Bruno having a ghost type and being. yknow. a robotic copy of a dead man. I think it suits him.

Yanmega: T.G. Recipro Dragonfly, it literally has eyes covered with a red visor, it's super fast and its design echoes a vehicle (aircraft rather than motorcycle, but still.)

Registeel/Regieleki: in Tag Force 6 Bruno uses and seems to really like Machina Fortress, so I wanted to give him a big 'ol bulky Steel Type. Antinomy gets Regieleki as a counterpart because it's literally The Fastest Pokemon, probably great for Delta Accel Synchro <3 Also Modern Age/electricity/android type invocations...

Porygon/Porygon2: Bruno needs a boxy little computer friend!! Antinomy gettin the evolved form since a big part of Porygon2's lore is that it was made for space travel...thinkin bout that duel again. The Porygon line, Porygon2 especially, also has a really similar color palette to Bruno's various forms!

Miraidon: ok ive seen people give Jack Miraidon and i get it, it's his color palette, BUT LIKE. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST BRUNO POKEMON EVER. literal robot motorcycle from the future who washes up on the beach with limited memories!!! it has a silly goofy friendly form and a badass powered up fighter form!!! it can be the perfect counterpart to Yusei having a Koraidon!!! LISTEN.

LESTER:

Skarmory: Meklord Emperor Skiel of course!!! Violent metal bird moment!!

Wingull: in the Tag Force games Lester really likes the Stuffed Seagull Plush item and I think that's just so cute

Zorua: Little red-haired mischief-maker that can create illusions and false appearances?? IT'S PERFECT FOR HIM.

Klang: From the episode when he infiltrated the twins' school, he used Gear Golem the Moving Fortress....gotta give him some gears.

Durant: Skiel Guard! Little weird metal bugaboo :]

Iron Bundle: challenging myself to give all the Iliaster members (aside from Z-one) Future Paradox Pokemon...Lester of course gets the Bird one. It even shoots a laser like Skiel does!!

PRIMO:

Bisharp: god his whole team is just Mean Blade Guys but like. Look at Him. That's Primo. the way Bisharp commands an army of Pawniard the way Primo commands the Diablo also relevant.

Ceruledge: This is kind of the Primo Pokemon of All Time For Me--haunted grudge-powered knight that "cuts its enemies to pieces without mercy" with sword arms infused with "the lingering resentment of a sword wielder who fell before accomplishing their goal"--like... COME ON. DUDE.

Mega Beedrill: gotta shout out the iconic bee commentary of course, and also it's Another Violent Pokemon With Sharp Dangerous Blade-like Arms.

Melmetal: MEKLORD EMPEROR WISEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scizor: Metal-clad evolution of a blade-armed beast, also violent and merciless. And it does the thing where it uses its pincers to look like it has three heads--funny for one of Aporia's components~

Iron Valiant: ANOTHER PRIMO POKEMON OF ALL TIME FROM GEN 9. LIKE!!! White robot with a big dangerous sword, created by a mad science supposedly, "said to be cruel enough to take its brilliantly shining blade and cut down anyone confronting it without hesitation"... THEY CANT KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT

JAKOB:

Mega Aggron: Granel <3 Big fuckoff metal monster. I also thought it would be fun to try and give the Three Nobles each a pure Steel type Pokemon for the Robot Funsies.

Barraskewda: For Granel's bizarrely fish-like canons and components--Barraskewda also being based on a projectile weapon a bonus, too.

Skeledirge: GOTTA give one of the Nobles something that ties into their sub opera singer namesakes, plus Skeledirge's Spanish influence is perfect for Jakob/Jose. And its an aquatic-based animal like all of Granel's components, too :^)

Alolan Golem: For Jakob's big old beard and eyebrow, PLUS it's a grumpy stubborn beast that launches electric rock blasts. Just suits him imo.

Ursaring: gave myself the added challenge of giving The Three Nobles each an unevolved Pokemon that Aporia has the fully evolved form of.... Jakob gets Ursaring for their matching surly expression and eye(s) plus the Guts ability boosting Attack when inflicted with a status effect is perfect for the Gaining Power Through Suffering motif of these guys <3

Iron Hands: Freakishly powerful big bulky electric robot monster!!! Yellow color motif like Granel!!! probably one of the most Meklord-y Paradox Pokemon, to me.

PARADOX sidenote it's so fucked up he just doesnt have a tag force sprite. sad!

Origin Dialga: Since his whole deal in BBT is having a deck of stolen Legendary Iconic Dragon Cards, i GOTTA indulge and give Paradox a bunch of Legendary Dragon Pokemon!!! Origin Dialga is for the time travel and also it's just a bizarre creature that feels on par with Malefic Paradox and Truth Dragon tbh. Plus it was created by Arceus, and Pdox was created by Z-one <3

Zekrom: GEE PARADOX WHY DOES YOUR MOM LET YOU HAVE TWO UNOVA DRAGONS... he's got that whole black and white color motif with his mask/the Malefic dragon armor. And Zekrom's got an engine...like a motorcycle...

Reshiram: Beautiful long haired bishie of a dragon plus the aforementioned black and white motifs. Also the concept of wanting to make a true AND ideal new future is really fun and kind of Very at play with Paradox~

Espathra: A.) im a Psychic Duelist Paradox truther, I rly wanted to give him a Psychic type, B.) Espathra is a violent weirdo that literally has his hair color palette/style. In my mind's eye this was his partner Pokemon originally ....Paradox with a Flittle is so funny to me.

Roaring Moon: if anyone deserves an Ancient AND Future Paradox Pokemon it's... WELL. THIS GUY. Malefics are almost all Dark Dragons so give him the freakish vicious Dragon/Dark that's like a twisted version of an existing monster (much like how Malefics are twisted versions of existing cards ;])

Iron Treads: Successfully continuing to give all the Iliaster guys Future pdox 'mons...Iron Treads is a big robot tire effectively which works great for a guy who motorcycles through time!!!

SHERRY:

Lunala: For that freaky Soul Binding Gate skeleton door, also a Pokemon that is brought under Necrozma's (Z-one's) power. Sherry having Lunala and Aporia having Solgaleo also just makes me a little insane.

Florges: FRENCH. FLOWER LADY. EASY PICK.

Rapidash: For Horse of the Floral Knights/Sherry's horse shaped duel runner...i love that she's a horse girl 🥴

Teddiursa: For that TEDDY BEAR!!! And also, again, her having a Pokemon from the same line as Pokemon Aporia has is just a fun detail for me.

Tsareena: 100% female. Floral Knights/Chevalier le Fleur. Kicks and fights triumphantly.

Iron Leaves: in general Virizion is already a perfect Sherry 'mon (grass horse, based on French literature, etc.) and I imagine she originally had one before it somehow Became an Iron Leaves when she joined Iliaster :^)

APORIA:

Solgaleo: i mean. He Just Looks Exactly Like One!!!! Also Steel/Psychic is a really good type for this big miserable monster lion angel robot. Plus it can be controlled by Necrozma.

Kingambit: Evolved form of Primo's Bisharp, a powerful and intense leader that fights primarily with brute strength. It's also got an ability that boosts its power the more of its allies fall (die <3) Power through suffering!!!

Silvally: Synthetic chimera of mishmashed fused parts created in a lab :) Can only evolve and reach its true potential through friendship :))) also giving him Silvally and Z-one Arceus just to make myself a little sick in the head.

Klingklang: Evolved form of Lester's Klang, mechanical 'mon that echoes the Ark Cradle's Sun Gear(s) that Aporia protects

Ursaluna: Evolve form of Jakob's Ursaring, hulking powerful bear with big claws and a back sail that looks exactly like Aporia's big metal halo.

Iron Jugulis: MEKLORD ASTRO DRAGON TRISKELION!!!! also a hydra like Aporia's duel runner >:D

Z-ONE:

Necrozma: first of all it kind of looks like Z-one's freaky life support+huge claws contraption second of all something something Infinite Light vs. Necrozma being a light consuming monster third of all the way it can dominate and lord over Solgaleo and Lunala. pounds my fists on the pavement.

Celebi: HE'S THE BIG BAD HE GETS AS MANY LEGENDARIES AS HE WANTS and he needs Celebi of course. Time Angel :)

Omastar: Freaky ancient Pokemon that resembles the nautilus shape of Z-one's contraption...also there's something about fossils being kept alive in there somewhere I'm sure.

Mimikyu: this is like. perfect for him tbh HDHGSDFG Wears the guise of another Pokemon and pretends to be it (and I would definitely give Yusei a Pikachu,) reacts with violence and panic when pushed into a corner, Fairy type (like all the Timelords are), competitively can fill the niche of being Difficult and full of underhanded status effects and tactics and I think that's just lovely for Z-one <3 In my mind's eye I like to think this was his partner Pokemon from even before The Yusei Factkinning Event.

Bloodmoon Ursaluna: Well it's literally got the odd 'device' clamped over one of its (weird glowing) eyes and also. For Aporia <3 That's Aporia <33 Z-one's giant time-displaced apex predator with a big weird circle on its forehead <3333

Arceus: THAT'S GOD BABEYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shion Yorigami:

Shion Yorigami is a god of poverty and misfortune. Think Hina Kagiyama, but even more powerful, yet even less in control of her powers.

She's the other half of the main villains and final boss of Touhou 15.5: Antinomy of Common Flowers. Together they are the most disastrous, dastardly duo in Gensokyo (their words, not mine). The two are rarely seen without each other, to the point I was debating just having one article for the both of them, but there's JUST barely enough of both of them getting solo appearances to justify having two articles.

Shion is named after the Philadelphia fleabane (harujion). So, she and Jo'on are the titular Common Flowers that there is an antinomy between.

Shion, as a poverty god, has the ability to spread misfortune wherever she goes, including to herself. Thus, she's stuck in perpetual poverty and misery. This applies to everyone she comes near. Even people who seem to be doing well will suddenly make bad decisions that cost them.

Her powers can be a blessing in disguise, however: if Shion's around, you'll have no money to waste from Jo'on's influence.

But either way, people pray to other gods to keep Jo'on and Shion away, nobody worships them. Can they even be considered gods?

Shion seems more shy and morose than the fiesty, bombastic Jo'on, and she tends to cry a lot and act scared. However, she isn't truly much kinder than Jo'on is, and has no issue with robbing people in an attempt to change her fate. If you mention her poverty, she's liable to get pissed off and attack. She doesn't appear to be very smart, and she seems to be subservient in any relationship she gets into, allowing the other person to do the thinking for her while she just goes along for the ride.

She and Jo'on had a fairly dysfunctional relationship, with Jo'on acting incredibly cruel and absusive towards Shion. Eventually, by 17.5, however, they seem to have made up, and now they seem to be fairly identical in thought.

Shion was Jo'on's trump card in Antinomy of Common Flowers, where she exploited the Perfect Possession incident to create an unbeatable spellcard: "Possession Exchange: Absolute Loser". This spellcard swaps the Slaves of her and the player, forcing you to fight your partner, while Shion acts as your partner but does nothing to help and actively slows you down. With this dirty trick the Yorigami Sisters defeat everyone in their path: Marisa and Koishi, Mamizou and Mokou, Miko and Byakuren, and Ichirin and Futo.

However, Yukari Yakumo figured out what was going on, and nullified this trump card. She confronted the Yorigami Sisters with Reimu as her Perfect possessor. When the time was right, she flipped the border between Master and Slave, making Shion the possessed and Jo'on the possessor. So, when Absolute Loser was activated, Jo'on went over to Reimu, and Yukari went over to Shion. However, for some reason the possessed couldn't actually control their partners, so it became a one-on-one battle: Reimu VS Shion.

Jo'on immediately had a breakdown and started calling Shion a useless smelly idiot and saying they had already lost if only Shion could fight Reimu. Shion can never win in anything, after all.

Shion then snaps. She unleashes the full fury of her abilities, becoming the Super Poverty God. She yells out that she doesn’t care if she never wins, she's dragging all of Gensokyo down with her, including her sister. And so the final battle commences.

Ultimately, however, Shion was defeated by Reimu, and the incident was finally close to being resolved. Unlike Jo'on, Shion's powers were considered too dangerous for her to be rehabilitated, and so she was dumped at the Hakurei Shrine: because Reimu is so impoverished that Shion would have no effect!

Though, it turns out Shion actually had visited the Shrine a few times before, and in fact played a big role in Reimu's perpetual failure to turn a profit.

When the Yorigami Sisters were sent to defeat the Dream World counterparts, Dream World Tenshi proved to be more powerful than anything seen before. Shion had to activate her Super Poverty God form again to stand a chance.

However, Shion soon caught the attention of Tenshi Hinanawi, who heard of Shion's powers. As it turns out, celestials are so innately lucky that Shion's misfortune aura had no effect on her! They soon became very good friends, and went on a reign of terror so horrible that people completely forgot Jo'on did anything and thought Tenshi and Shion were the disastrous, dastardly duo who caused the Perfect Possession incident.

Later, in Wild and Horned Hermit, Tenshi and Shion somehow get Reimu to let them take over her yearly flower viewing party. Reimu hated this, but for some reason she and Marisa approved. Tenshi claimed she could make food better than anything on Earth... and proceeded to gather together a bunch of leaves and junk and crappy alcohol. The few people who attended thought it was gross, but Shion, who had been poor her whole life, thought it was the most amazing banquet she ever had in her life. The people then ate the junk out of guilt, which led to many people getting sick and vomiting.

Then Reimu agreed to let Tenshi host another banquet for some reason. This time though, Kasen prepared the food. People still got sick and vomited.

All of this was Shion's influence at work, of course. Her misfortune apparently extends to influencing people to make the worst possible decisions.

Shion thought Tenshi was gonna punish her for this, but it turns out Tenshi had fun regardless and simply hugged Shion in approval. Truly a beautiful relationship. Tenshi might be a brat most of the time, but she cares immensely for the few people she's able to warm up to.

Shion primarily attacks by shooting black-and-purple words at you. Words like "poverty", "misery", and "loss". She's also able to turn her legs to blue fire and launch herself at you like a rocket. She's also able to create a giant black and purple orb of energy, her Super Poverty Bomb (a reference to the Spirit Bomb from Dragon Ball Z). She doesn't really attack much on her own, being moreso a sidekick to Jo'on.

At least until she unleashes her Super Poverty God form. Then, her curse words spill out to even larger degrees: enough to flood the screen! She even has an ultimate attack where she sends Reimu to a pocket dimension of darkness with her appearing giant in the background, only for a white crack to slowly grow until Reimu bursts out of the dimension.

Interestingly, Shion wasn't originally gonna be a god of poverty, or really even a character, but rather "the embodiment of the Perfect Possession incident".

caden!! saw you mentioned both jane bennett and derrida in a recent post — have you read sharon krause’s political respect for nature? it’s kind of a counter to bennett’s vibrant matter, at least in my mind, and it invokes the classic derrida cat anecdote as part of the framing which i find really interesting. personally i think i find her eco arg more convincing than bennett’s new materialist one because i like how krause acknowledges how irrelevant the human value system is outside of humanity (how, like, we can’t possibly judge nature thru human values; it has values of its own we can’t possibly hope to understand) and uses that to argue for policy initiatives that similarly ensure nature’s autonomy whereas bennett’s arg of expanding the human value system to include nature within it (because of the internet ‘vibrance’ and aliveness in everything both humans and nature) is beautiful but imo kind of stops short of respecting matter on its own terms rather than bc of its connection to humanity. rambling but if you’ve read bennett’s vibrant matter and like derrida i def think krause’s political respect for nature is a worthwhile read!!! not like a Solution or perfect or anything but i really like thinking ab the human relationship w nature through the post-levinasian lens she dives into (the imperative that we stop viewing human understanding as a necessary prerequisite for respect being a big part of it). also just curious in general what ur thoughts are on bennett and/or new materialists more broadly? def don’t have to actually give a whole ass response or anything but i saw that post of urs and my ears perked up like a dog’s lmao. some like pavlovian response to political/phil theory sightings in the wild (read: my dash)

re: the new materialists generally: ok, i have a lot of thoughts about them. first of all i am #1 kant hater because i don't go in for idealism OR dualism. so the underlying goal of the new materialists / speculative realists is highly appealing to me. however, (& i think this is sympatico with yr read of krause) i think their projects have a tendency to simultaneously project human values & ethics onto the natural world, & to flatten what i think actually IS an important distinction between human and non-human. i see this in barad, in bennett, in brassier, quite strongly in harman's object-oriented ontology. it's like, (& i'm paraphrasing projit mukharji) we still haven't gotten the hang of granting personhood to all actual humans, and already people are trying to break down the category...?

my fav of the bunch by far is meillassoux (altered my brain chemistry forever when i was 21). i would enthusiastically recommend him to literally anyone, even his weirder stuff (spectral dilemma and such). he's great to think with and i think he does the best job of any of this crowd at articulating the problem with kant and his transcendentalist 'copernican revolution.' however, i also see most clearly in meillassoux the root of the problem with the proffered new materialist solutions, which is that he takes the antinomy between perceived & real (ie, inside & outside) to be a transhistorical, universal condition of sensory experience, rather than a historically specific consequence of, eg, divided / estranged labour. so his solution relies on mathematisation à la badiou, which meillassoux also sees as an ahistorical and apolitical project, and although in 'after finitude' he makes a cursory attempt to link a critique of metaphysics with a critique of political authority, he's unable to develop this any further or with socio-historical specificity.

tl;dr new materialists fun sexy also fundamentally unable to engage with politics or history in a manner i find fruitful or liberatory. again though, really excellent to think with. love to rotate them.

My Opinions on Every 5Ds Ship

Cuz I did this for VRAINS a while ago and today I thought “which other Yugioh shows do I have strong takes on the ships?” And so I settled on 5Ds because really, when do I not have a strong take on 5Ds? I’m excluding any ship with Leo and Luna by the way, they are too young to ship. If I miss any others, which is very possible, don’t hesitate to let me know. Finally, dub names. Because I enjoyed 5Ds primarily in dub so deal with it.

Alteregoshipping (Antinomy x Bruno)

I don’t understand shipping someone with themself, I think I made that clear in the VRAINS list. So again: “what? No.”

Androidshipping (Antinomy x Primo)

This is going to go for any other ships of this type but Primo is only one third of an interesting character and thus shipping him is odd to me. Plus the bulk of his appearances were in WRGP and the less I remember about that arc the better. This ship is another L.

AZshipping (Antinomy x Z-One)

Now this just sounds like Toolshipping but with extra steps. Well, I like Toolshipping, and I like robots, so I’d take this one if it were served to me. So it’s a yes.

Bigbirdshiping/Novashipping (Carly x Kalin)

I’ve encountered this ship before and I didn’t really get why it was a thing. I guess they were both Dark Signers and could share that survivors’ guilt/trauma. If Carly were to remember that is and I suppose it could be a decent “sunshine one lifts up the grumpy one” dynamic but… I already got that dynamic from Jack/Carly in the actual show. Why change perfection? *glares at post Dark Signers* Am I right? Okay ship I suppose, there’s potential, it just wouldn’t be my go to.

Bluebirdshipping (Crow x Bruno)

Gosh this ship name is so cute. I don’t remember any of their interactions but it’s a decent idea. Soft maybe on this one, I’d have to see it in action.

Blueroseshipping (Akiza x Bruno)

This wasn’t on the list but I’ve seen fanart of it and… yeah they didn’t interact much in canon (if at all in a substantial way) but I really enjoy the idea of this soft boy/tough girl dynamic. Maybe I’m projecting, but I like the idea of this ship. Not one I’d actively go for when I have options I prefer but it's a cute idea with cute fanart.

Boostershipping (Yusei x Rally)

Was I just weird for interpreting Rally as way younger than Yusei? Like a little brother figure? That’s how I always saw their relationship. So this ship is a no. They might actually be closer in age, anime ages are weird, but I can’t really get into this ship.

Brightshipping (Yusei x Akiza x Crow)

I’ll get to all these individual ships later but for now I’ll say, I like this as a vee because two of the pairs here are great and the other doesn’t appeal to me.

Careshipping (Jack x Mina)

I have several problems with this one. Mina worships the ground Jack walks on, which just isn’t a healthy way to feel about someone, and she’s… not his boss but it feels like she has too much power over him in the workplace, at least in the first two arcs and she seems older than him too so there’s just… too much of a power imbalance here, at least the way interpreted it. Plus I just… don’t really like Mina that much, sorry. So the ship is a no.

Chevaliershipping (Yusei x Sherry)

Meh. I don’t care. Not surprised this exists but I have no opinion on it whatsoever. It’s there.

Cupramenshipping (Lazar x Jack)

…these ship names are killing me. I can tell this is a crack ship and as a crack ship, it’s fantastic and hilarious. I want more of these idiots drooling over noodles together. This doesn’t work as a legit ship, Lazar is way too old for him, so logically, it’s a no. I just think it’s funny as shit.

Disdianshipping (Lester x Primo)

Faithshipping (Yusei x Akiza)

I mean… I’ve talked about this one quite a bit already. It’s one of only two protag/lead girl ships I like (the other being Fruitshipping). I love the way Yusei supports her throughout the show. I love their little moments together, especially the scene where he comforts her after she finds out the truth about the Arcadia movement and all their moments in the godsend of an episode where Akiza learns to turbo duel. All the guys are really supportive of her but Yusei took it a step further. I love love love the rollerskates scene. He’s teasing but still supportive and sweet the whole time, and his unwavering belief in her abilities was just so damn sweet. it’s just a sweet ship. A bit vanilla I suppose but vanilla can be great with the right toppings and these two are topped with a lot of sweetness that I enjoy.

Firebirdshipping (Akiza x Crow)

And I also enjoy this! I thought their canon friendship in the show was really sweet. They always seem to lift each other up when they’re given chances to interact, I especially always loved the bit where Crow was initially jealous of Akiza when she took his spot on the team but after spending some time training with her, he realises he’s not really mad at her and switches to supporting her instead. Their moments in WRGP and Ark Cradle also contributed to this friendship standing out to me and after writing that one-shot about them reconnecting post series, I grew to enjoy the relationship as a romantic one. But don’t ask me to choose between it and Faith. I don’t wanna get involved in that ship war, they’re both about even for me.

Flowershipping (Akiza x Mina)

I couldn’t determine that this was a real ship but my opinion on it is pretty short and underwhelming: no because Akiza is one of my favourite characters of all time and deserves better than Mina. I don't dislike Mina but I don't care for her either.

Isolationshipping (Akiza x Misty)

“I don’t know your brother!” “You’re a liar and a murderer!” Are the only things I can remember these two saying to each other so I can’t really see it working out. Soft nah, not my thing.

Justiceshipping (Jack x Kaz)

I cannot remember who Kaz is, I’m not gonna lie. Even looking at pictures of him did nothing to jog my memory. Pre-WRGP and especially WRGP are such a blur for me so I have no opinion on this ship.

Kingcrabshipping (Jack x Yusei)

Normally I enjoy the protag/rival ships but… these characters are more like brothers so this ship is a no.

Kingshipping/Petshipping (Jack x Goodwin)

Ew ew ew ew ew ew no no no no no bad gross don’t like it. Kill it with fire.

Kizunashipping (Crow x Jack x Yusei)

Again, I see these three as adopted brothers of sorts, like Loki and Thor. Sure they’re not blood related but their relationship is more familial. Any one of these characters with Kalin would be a better option.

Leadershipping (Jack x Kalin x Yusei)

Yeah, there ya go. Stick a white-haired psycho twink in the middle of the two brothers and I can get behind it as a vee.

Yeah for some reason I didn’t interpret Kalin as a brother to them, maybe because he never really had the mother/son connection with Martha that the other three do and we learned he existed at kind of an odd time.

Markedshiping (Crow x Yusei)

Aaaand back to two brothers. I do not ship the brothers, they are all Martha’s kids.

Omenshipping (Carly x Misty)

Honestly, before Jack swooped Carly off her feet and I got incredibly invested in that ship, I did have my eyes on Carly/Misty and on rewatches of Dark Signers… yeah, I wish they’d gotten to interact more, especially post Dark Signers. They clicked pretty well and the way Misty comforted her when she found out she was a Dark Signer was one of the few non Jack vs Carly scenes in the sub that actually stuck with me (the dub version of the scene was just kind of okay by comparison). It’s a decent ship, I like it.

Psychicshipping (Sayer x Akiza)

Ew gross oh god no get away from Akiza you freaking creep she is a minor what the fuck-

Punchshipping (Bruno x Jack)

Like Crow/Bruno, I’ve never really thought of this one though I feel like these two wouldn’t get along as well. Jack seemed pretty jealous/aggressive toward Bruno, at least when he first became a part of the crew. Could be an okay 'enemies to lovers' ship I guess but eh. Not my thing.

Ravenknightshipping (Crow x Sherry)

Okay so this one wasn’t on the masterlist I got but it is a ship I know exists so I wanted to talk about it. I’ll admit this ship did feel a bit… obligatory at first glance, like it only exists because “Yusei and Jack have girlfriends, Crow needs one too! So let’s ship him with this single girl!” But after seeing the Crow and Akiza vs Sherry duel, I did actually enjoy their interactions and can get behind this ship.

Regentshipping (Jack x Kalin)

Kalin with any of the Enforcers is a win. All these ships got the history and the bond and the chemistry and some damn good angst to back them up. And Jack can literally sweep Kalin off his feet. So I may not actively ship this one but if I see content of it, it gets a like from me.

Retributionshipping/Scoopshipping (Jack x Carly)

So according to the masterlist I’m using, “Retributionshipping” specifically refers to Dark Signer Carly while “Scoopshipping” is normal Carly and while I can understand these being separate in Duel Links or something, Dark Signer Carly in my mind isn’t really her own character, she’s Carly who’s been taken over by a dark force. Still Carly deep down just doesn’t always behave like herself. So these are the same ship to me and I don't feel like splitting them up. It’s also my favourite ship in 5Ds. I love them but to summarise, Jack and Carly’s relationship was the only plotpoint I cared about from beginning to end when I first watched 5Ds in sub (the dub added a lot more life to the show for me and I prefer it overall). I found their first meeting endearing and seeing them interact always put a smile on my face. Their relationship really changed both characters for the better and the payoff was legendary. Dub or sub, I always get teary eyed when I watch Jack’s attempted sacrifice and Carly dying in his arms. As much as Post Dark Signers retconning their relationship upset me, I will always look back fondly on Jack and Carly’s relationship in Dark Signers.

Reverseshipping (Crow x Kalin)

Again, Kalin with any of the Enforcers is a win and these two can bond over both having gone through prison and getting those markers. Also, Crow was always my favourite of the trio of brothers so this one is above Jack/Kalin in my mind for that reason alone. And yet… it’s still not my favourite Kalin ship.

Roseknightshipping (Sherry x Akiza)

I like the one little moment they share after Sherry’s duel with Yusei and Sherry being Akiza’s inspiration to start turbo duelling is definitely a great foundation. I would’ve liked more moments between them to back it up (before Ark Cradle) but it’s a fun ship.

Also, I’ve looked ahead and Akiza/Crow/Sherry doesn’t seem to be a ship (or at least not one with an official name) which is a shame because I actually really like the idea of them as a throupple, especially if it starts as Akiza and Crow inducting a shy confused Sherry into their relationship. Hehe, wink wink nudge nudge.

Ruinshipping (Akiza x Jack)

Honestly, all of Team 5Ds have such amazing chemistry that I can see any of the (OF AGE) characters being shipped. Out of the (OF AGE) ships in the group, this is probably the least appealing to me as they seem a little too similar but their memorable interactions in canon, Jack saving her from the crumbling building in Dark Signers (despite barely knowing her at the time), and Jack beating up the guys who tried to sabotage her Turbo duel against Trudge, are enough to make me believe these two are friends and with the right writing, could be more.

Sadistshipping (Mina x Goodwin)

Bleh, no. He’s too old for her. Granted, I did say I interpreted Mina as too old for Jack so like… in her twenties but… come on, a twenty year old dating someone with gray hair is weird, it’s just blatantly weird.

Satisfactionshipping (Crow x Kalin x Jack x Yusei)

Love the ship name, but I don’t like shipping the brothers with each other. If it’s just the three of them dating Kalin in a weird vee, then I can get behind it but as a… four person throupple (apparently it can be called a quad or a foursome) doesn’t work for me.

Squabbleshipping (Jack x Crow)

Nope, don’t ship the brothers and these two in particular are extremely dysfunctional.

Toolshipping (Yusei x Bruno)

If you kept up with my sporadic and polarised 5Ds liveblogs, you know I enjoy this ship. They clicked fast and Bruno sacrificing himself for Yusei, while not Jack/Carly levels of sadness, was still very moving and tragic. Ark Cradle really was such a breath of fresh air. And I like this ship.

Treasonshipping (Kalin x Yusei)

This one’s my favourite Kalin ship, no question. I love their duels in Dark Signers, I love how Yusei never stopped believing in him, I love the homie embrace in front of the rainbow, and my god did I have fun with Crashtown largely due to their gay as hell interactions and Kalin’s characterization. Just a great ship overall.

Trickstarshipping (Crow x Brave)

Not gonna lie, when I saw that ship name I expected some crossover ship involving Blue Angel. How did this ship get its name? I must know. I’m guessing Brave was the one who used the Loki card so the Trickstar association makes sense but where did the star part come from? Tell me please!

Anyways, I hated WRGP with a passion so Team Ragnarok, while mildly interesting due to their associations with Norse Mythology, never stuck out to me so I don’t remember any of these two’s interactions. Assuming they duelled but honestly for most of this arc my eyes were rolled to the back of my head just waiting for it to end so I can’t get into this ship.

Troolshipping (Bruno x Kalin x Yusei)

Okay so I couldn’t confirm this as a real ship but honestly, even if this ship name isn’t official, I love it. And I love this as a throupple. After all, why have Kalin and Bruno fight for Yusei’s hand in marriage when he has two hands?

Violetfrareshipping (Dragan x Jack)

Same as Trickstar. I can’t bring myself to care about WRGP or Team Ragnarok.

And that's all the official ships I found that have at least one post here on Tumblr. I think. 5Ds had a lot more ships than VRAINS did so it's possible I missed some apart from the ones I intentionally ignored. And yet throughout my digging, I did not find a ship name for Trudge and Mina. I’m a little iffy on that ship myself but they really do have good chemistry and some fun interactions. I’m genuinely shocked there isn’t a ship name for them but okay, I guess. Hope y'all liked my pointlessly long post.

I've read it already and it is so exciting!!! They do have some interesting parallels and also they both want to be the king and queen but not because they want the iron throne. Aemond thinks he is fit because he studied for it, Sansa wants people to love her as a queen, then her experiences and learnings actually make her a well equipped queen than others. Them being co-rulers make me think of Jaeherys and Alysanne? Idk they're the only Targaryen monarchs that I know are good at ruling so 😅

Well yes they are between the few that are actually equipped for ruling, along with Young Griff and Arianne in the book. They are by no means perfect for it on the set to go.

Sansa has inherited Ned's idealism, which is as much as a virtue as much as sentence from the very beginning. She has to unlearn all she believed true and still make the choice to believe it.

There are Gods, and true knights. All stories cannot be lies.

And she does so by actively becoming a hero out of song.

For reversal, Aemond was always willful and wild as well as unforgiving and stubborn, but he applied himself. He worked hard and learned from those around him. He is by no means perfect for the job alone, but he is loyal and he is willing to listen and to actively listen to those around him. He interprets, and he looses his temper (he did loose control of Vhagar, but the dragoness did act upon his own temper, channeling his fury to her own) but he is at his heart someone who knows his duty and is willing to make the sacrifices needed to rule.

In the books for example Young Griff is a bit like Aemond as in well equipped, he worked hard and learned. He is still stubborn and childish upon occasion, but at his heart he is dutiful and wants to do his duty and not only to claim his birthright. A bit like Sansa.

Arianne for reversal, is more like Aemond. She is stubborn and willful, well equipped for her role, but she is also capable of loosing her temper and not visualize correctly what happens around her because blinded by her fears (her fear of being set aside in favor of her brother has her act out) on which a great part of blame resides on Doran, not only for keeping her in the dark until she forces his hand, but most especially for not making her feel secure of her place as his heir.

Anyway, long ass digression, to say that yes, I think Sansa and Aemond could prove to be great co-rulers and actually be remembered by history as good rulers.

One parallel I especially like for Sansa and Aemond is that of rising up and becoming what their idealistic parent instilled into them. Sansa becomes a Ned more than capable of playing the game and win it, with her own victory in mind (keeping her family safe, gain independence for the North as her duty demands, care for her people as her duty demands) but instead of gaining only half a victory (he did keep Jon safe, he didn't manage to keep the rest of his family safe) Sansa is the victor by antinomy, the one who reached her purpose despite the entire world betting against them whilst remaining true to themselves not letting the rest of the world change who they are in a negative manner.

Aemond instead became the knight his mother deserved, and the prince she would be proud to have raised, he did not let the world make of him just an ambitious, competent young man. He remains loyal and defends his brother's claim to the Iron throne, rules in his stead and defends him. And yes, he is mercurial, but he also lets himself be guided.

I doubt that the change made to the way the whole Lucerys' death was unintentional, Martin did it to give even more depth to Aemond and it was a success, as much as creating a so passionate relationship between Alicent and Rhaenyra gave both a more tragic and defined depth, the same way they gave more depth to Aegon by digging deeper into his own trauma and conviction of being unworthy.

He twisted a cold, history recounting and made it about real people. Not perfect by any means, sometimes cruel and often egoistic, but beneath all of that they are people fighting to survive.

And that created amazing parallels with the characters of asoiaf with which we are much more familiar.

I just saw that kpop ask and I come here with a concept that has never left my mind ever since I started simping for Scaramouche.

Imagine Scaramouche but with EXO's Monster... PERFECT! Like only the lyrics make me think about scara a LOT LOT LOT-- imagine he's fallen in love with you and so have you, but you're afraid of getting closer to him because he's, well, him. You're just a normal, common citizen with no ties to the Fatui; you're literally just a normal person going about your day and you're sure there's nothing special about you. To Scara, though, that's not the case at all. Even though he's your complete opposite, rich, powerful and beautiful, he loves you. He just knows there's something special about you and he wants you to see it too, he wants you to open your heart and let him give you the love and everything else you deserve. He started talking to you as if he didn't have the ability to end your life in a matter of seconds, and this is how you started to fall for each other, but once you discover what his job is you feel somewhat afraid, somewhat insecure about getting closer to him.

Scaramouche isn't going to let you slip away like that. He loves you, he wants you more than he's ever wanted anything. He only wants you to understand that yes, you're more than good enough to be with him and yes, he loves you for who you are and has no ulterior motives and yes, he's serious whenever he flirts with you and offers dates and... COOKIE ANON, THIS IS PERFECTION!!!! It fits so well with Scaramouche!! While I was reading through your scenario, I couldn’t help but think of how yandere it seems. Although I can also agree with the slow burn/romance aspect of it, too!

I imagine you don’t have a Vision and simply happened to meet him by chance. Maybe you want to spend time with him the more you run into him, but the fact that he’s a Harbinger and could very well get rid of you with a snap of his fingers is holding you back. There’s an intimidating aura that surrounds him, especially since he has so much influence and power. On the other hand, you don’t have a Vision, you don’t know how to fight, and you’ve lived your life in peaceful bliss for the longest time.

Things definitely change when he takes interest in you and starts to pull all sorts of strings in order to find little ways to get closer to you. Although you might not be his top priority at the moment—he’s still going to focus on his missions, lest you become tangled up in all of this Fatui business—but eventually you’ll be number one on his list. Maybe he starts to miss you when he’s separated from you for long periods of time or maybe you have a knack for getting yourself into dangerous situations.

Whatever the case may be, you’ll always find a way back to him. And even if you want to travel down another path, he’ll gladly take all sorts of roads that lead to you, whether they’re legal or not. There’s no way you can evade him—not when you’re a powerless, Vision-less citizen and he’s a powerful, rich Fatui Harbinger. You can call him a monster all you want; it’s going to do nothing to deter him.

A top...6 of my favorite Deku&Baku or DekuBaku doujinshi. This is a top5, plus a 6 which I mostly like but also sometimes dislike?

Just know that my preference for BL clearly extends for doujinshi as well, so I do tend to prefer stuff that is safe for work or where sex is used to say something about the characters. Also consent is loud and clear! So I read a bunch and I actually ended up liking these 6 and only these 6.

Next time: the KiriBaku!

1. Ohayoukara Oyasumimade: This is it. A+ masterpiece, groundbreaking, adorable. I loved it even if it had zero angst, mostly because of the adorableness and domesticity of it all. It is divided in future (they are pro heroes) small scenes of Midoriya and Bakugou now living together and in a relationship, and then a big of a longer story where their friends visit them, and Kirishima, Sero and Denki sort of find out Bakugou and Midoriya are together. Plus, Todoroki and Uraraka are also in in it and they are just so cute?? The characters are also so... in character?? Perfection.

2. Mamanara Night: This another adorable (but short) established relationship one. It is about Midoriya and Bakugou’s trying to organize their first time, but has no actual graphic nsfw in it! It’s a mix of vignettes about them trying to communicate, and definitely on the funny side. I just kept smiling the whole time I was reading it. It’s just adorableness to the max, and I am always here for extra annoyed and angry Bakugou.

3. Kimi no Hajimete wo Boku ni Kudasai: This is another established new relationship (this time at school), full of misunderstandings and quite adorable and fun at the same time?? The premise is that while kissing, one day, Midoriya ends up on top of Bakugou. The core of the misunderstanding is that Deku is absolutely mortified, while Bakugou is hyping himself up (mostly with anger and competitiveness) for their first time. This one actually has graphic scenes so definitely nsfw! But the most adorable part is the ending, I don’t know why Todoroki just deadpanning and not understanding is one of my favorite things.

4. Keiyou Fukanou: This is full of angst?? And it’s just after Deku vs Kacchan part 2, and mostly about Bakugou’s complex feelings for Midoriya. Plus Aizawa being worried about Bakugou and Midoriya, and taking care of Bakugou and hugging him?? I am crying. It has such a beautiful analysis of the relationship between Deku and Bakugou. Plus, surprise kiss with Aizawa actually being surprised this is the direction of Bakugou’s feelings towards Izuku.

And now, for the two doujinshi that are in the list mostly because I wanted to put 6 pictures in the post:

5. Kiss Junkie: While I did find this a bit confusing, it was still a nice read. Canon compliant, with some past angst in the middle and Bakugou really enjoying kissing Midoriya. Also, somehow Kirishima rooting for Bakugou not to punch Midoriya really made me happy!

6. Antinomie: Okay. I have complex feelings about this one. This is in three parts, and the whole story does actually reach a satisfying conclusion. It has a bunch of angst, like, a lot. The story also contains trigger warnings, so I will put the rest under cut:

This one is a dom/sub universe AU. I am usually not a big fan of these kinds of AU, but the story uses it to explain Bakugou’s frustration (at being a sub), and Midoriya’s feeling inadequate. Regarding the warnings, there is at least a non consensual scene (not between Bakugou and Izuku), which I always skipped and is definitely skippable. The rest of the story revolves around Izuku and Bakugou’s navigating a rocky relationship, both with the past abuse, and the fact that they don’t really communicating.

I am honestly... not sure if this should be in this list BUT I LOVE SYMMETRY And I couldn’t put only 5 doujinshi.

ok but on that space au vein - Space Race AU. I've done it for Naruto before and it creates such an interesting dynamic between characters (from both Soviet and American sides) I'd love to see how this would pan out with 5Ds cast.

At first I was confused because I didn’t get that you meant the historical thing between the US and the Soviet union ahahaha (sorry my historical knowledge is very limited) but it’s actually a great scenario if you write it correctly!!!!!! :0 @aceyugiohdreamer helped me out so much and we came up with a list of ideas, but then we went so beyond our own expectations, it was unreal!!

It came out as an AU and a crossover (because we didn’t have enough characters in the 5ds cast who would fit every role we were thinking of + some specific characters would fit this AU in such a perfect way!!!) so here’s the list:

The US would be Neo Domino City, while Russia would be Heartland

The main leader of the space project in the US is Rex Goodwin

Nobody in Neo Domino trusts people from Satellite, which is the same hellhole it is in the anime, but Yusei is that one genius who could dramatically boost the chance of the US team winning the race! The main issue is all the prejudice and bullying he gets from the other Neo Domino scientists because nobody wants to trust a person from Satellite

Bruno/Antinomy is that only engineer of the team who trusts him, because he can see Yusei is a trustworthy person, like (and I quote)  "I don't care where he's from, he knows what he's doing, and I need him. If you don't bring him on the team, I'm leaving to join HIM over in Satellite"

Crow is the guy in charge of the espionage program, idk why but he feels like the right person who can take care of that specific thing

Aki is the doctor that helps with the space projects on the medical side :’)

Sherry and Mitzoguchi work for the Neo Domino side

Important: Kaiba leads the project in Heartland (I imagine an older version of him because of time consistency, plus Mokuba might be on board too!)

Leo Akaba directs most of the research in Heartland. He works for the Kaiba Corp

I could see several characters in the Heartland team, they have nothing to do with each other, but I hope you can see why I picked them: team Ragnarok, then Kaito, then Spectre and Revolver. I can’t explain why, but they exude the right vibe

also, as a background story (and this is entirely Ky’s idea, to which I give the greatest chapeau): imagine that Kaiba started expanding his company into other regions, and at some point he moved his headquarters to Heartland because he felt satisfied with the state of Domino, and he wanted a new pet project to develop, and so he made Heartland COMPLETELY based on Kaiba Corp technology (which is why everything is so techy there, like even the trash cans are talking robots, because Kaiba was like, "THIS ENTIRE CITY WILL BE A LIVING MONUMENT TO KAIBA CORP!!!!"), and after he left Domino, it became Neo Domino, and Rudger/Roman (who was the leader of the space project in Neo Domino at that time) decided he wanted Domino to surpass Kaiba's legacy, and that's why he wants to compete with Kaiba, and Kaiba's like, "You think you can surpass me? Bitch, I MADE Domino what it is today!! Domino would be NOTHING without me! And now I've already built ANOTHER goddamn city, and you think you can best me? You don't know who you're dealing with!!!" And that's how it started

But then, then, the whole Rex, Rudger, and Dr. Fudo travesty happens, and Reverse Zero has a devastating effect, and THAT'S when Kaiba realizes this isn't just a competition of geniuses comparing their achievements, there's like, legit danger going on, and so now he's like, I have to fucking shut that whole operation down before they fuckin destroy the planet, and so now he's competing with them in order to not only discourage them and beat them in everything they try, but also to infiltrate their companies and corrupt them from the inside (bringing in the whole spy and red scare aspect of the Cold War space race)

About the Zero Reverse, the accident happened all bc of Rudger’s thirst for victory, he wanted to beat Kaiba so bad that he was ready to send the reactor straight to overload mode. Dr. Fudo tried to stop him, but it went like we know in the anime (and that’s how Satellite was born). Only Rex survived and he swore to never let such a thing happen again. He’s leading the project to the present day, but he still hasn’t given up on the rivalry thing. They’re all calmer now but they still want to get first

About Yusei, he would be Dr Fudo’s son, but nobody would be aware of his identity! (Not even Yusei knows his father belonged to that project :v he might know in canon, but he doesn’t in this AU because to be fair even the anime thing was hard to justify :v) Rex would look at him and get almost a heart attack though because they look sOOO alike, so he decides to investigate and.... oh, the irony

There are playable characters such as Reimu and Marisa but they also added Sakuya Izayoi from Touhou 6 The Embodiment Of Scarlet Devil as a playable character, also known as the stage 5 boss or second to the last boss of Touhou 6.

Plot:

The heroine follows the trail of cherry blossoms high above Gensokyo, breaking through the greetings of Lily White, eventually reaching a great magical boundary and the poltergeist musicians Prismriver Sisters. ... The heroine defeats Youmu and hurries to Hakugyokurou to get Gensokyo's spring back.

Touhou Bosses:

Letty Whiterock (レティ・ホワイトロック Reti Howaitorokku) is a seasonal youkai who's only seen during winter. She seems fittingly cold towards most of the humans she meets, and is feared by humans as she is known to freeze them. Letty first appeared as the Stage 1 boss in Perfect Cherry Blossom, later she made a brief cameo in Hopeless Masquerade as a background character.

In Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, it was written that she was a type of yuki-onna. According to ZUN, if she was to show her full power compared to her strength shown in Perfect Cherry Blossom, it would cause an incident.

Ability

Manipulation of chill

She possesses an ability to manipulate chill. It's not an ability to create blizzards or make snow fall, but rather an ability to strengthen the "winter" that exists in the natural world. According to Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, since this is equivalent to an ability that manipulates the winter within nature, she possesses tremendous power according to the environment, but she is pretty much powerless outside of winter. In Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red, Letty herself said that outside of winter, she hides away in a place where not a ray of sunlight can reach. In Forbidden Scrollery, she is shown spreading snow over Gensokyo.

Chen (橙) is Ran Yakumo's shikigami, who was guarding the village of Mayohiga during the events of Perfect Cherry Blossom. Unfortunately, she could put up little resistance due to being far away from her master.

Chen first appeared as the second stage midboss and boss of Perfect Cherry Blossom, along with being the extra stage midboss and Ran Yakumo's familiar in one of her spell cards. She was also Yukari Yakumo's familiar in Immaterial and Missing Power, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, and Antinomy of Common Flowers, and was a target on Stage 6 of Shoot the Bullet. Additionally, she made a background appearance in Hopeless Masquerade.

She is a bakeneko youkai that Ran Yakumo uses as shikigami, but since Ran herself is Yukari's shikigami, she is a "shikigami of a shikigami". When possessed as a shikigami, Chen aquires the fearsome power of a kishin, but since her master is also a shikigami, her ability is fairly low. The possession is removed when she is soaked in water, and since she also hates water as a cat, she is in any case weak to water. Her height is "low" and is capable of human speech. She can use impressive black arts, but only possesses the intellect of a human child. Whether she is possessed or not, her personality and appearance don't change.

She ordinarily lives on Youkai Mountain. In Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red, she made the village of cats and tried to stand as the leader, but the progress has been unfavorable.

Ability

The way her abilities show up in the game itself is that she runs around the screen so freely in a way that is not expected of a boss of a shooting game, which is characteristic of her (as one would expect of a cat). This could be considered cute if she were an ordinary cat, but it also makes her slightly more tricky to deal with due to her speed and deceptive movement, which can confuse her opponent. Another characteristic of her is how she spins around and around while attacking, somewhat like her master.

Alice Margatroid (アリス・マーガトロイド Arisu Māgatoroido) is a doll-controlling magician who lives in her home in the Forest of Magic near the home of Marisa Kirisame. According to ZUN's comments in the Music Room of Perfect Cherry Blossom, Alice is kind of a special character in the Touhou Project.

Alice made her first ever appearance of the fifth PC-98 Touhou Project game Mystic Square as the third stage boss and the Extra stage boss. Afterwards, with her canon completely remodelled, she appeared again as the third stage boss and midboss in the seventh work Perfect Cherry Blossom and as a playable character in Imperishable Night, along with being a playable partner in Subterranean Animism. She was a playable character in Immaterial and Missing Power and Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and was the Final boss of Cirno's scenario in Touhou Hisoutensoku. Additionally, she was a target on Stage 3 of Shoot the Bullet and has made a background appearance in Hopeless Masquerade.

She is a pure all-purpose-type magician youkai who lives in a western-style house in the Forest of Magic without strengths and weaknesses in attributes, but she fundamentally fights in style of manipulating her self-made dolls. With a personality that is indifferent to other people, she is attached to magic, and is usually confident but is also timid in one aspect.

In the games on the PC-98, she lived in Makai calling herself "The Magician of Makai" and had a black book that's called the "Grimoire of Alice". Makai was created by Shinki, along with its residents. She was also a magician that can control dolls. She also created her own "Wonderland" in Makai. In the games on Windows, Alice's book in her character portrait in Imperishable Night reveals that the writing possibly spells out "Grimoire". This is some evidence that the book is possibly the same Grimoire which Alice used in the Extra Stage. In Perfect Cherry Blossom, she said, "at last, former friend, we meet again. Have you only brought me your life as a gift?" which can be considered to be something carried over from the PC-98 games, and ZUN himself said that it was the third time that they have fought.

Lily White (リリーホワイト Rirī Howaito) is a fairy who heralds the coming of spring. She first appeared as the 4th stage midboss of Perfect Cherry Blossom, then as a special generic enemy in Phantasmagoria of Flower View and a common midboss in Fairy Wars, each time announcing spring has arrived. She returned as the stage 3 midboss of Hidden Star in Four Seasons.

Ability

Announcing that spring has come

Lily is able to announce that spring has come. Although it's unclear what this ability entails concretely, Gensokyo's residents are made to feel the actual feeling of spring's arrival which makes her very popular with florists. It seems like she is able to provide impetus for flowers and other plants to bloom. In chapter 8 of Strange and Bright Nature Deity, there was a depiction of the place she passed by instantly becoming spring.

She can still attack with said ability, but it's mostly due to excitement about the spring as she's not very aggressive. While it's advised not to stay around when she attacks, she has a good relation with humans. She doesn't seem willing to attack even if they catch her. Likewise, humans don't see her as a threat, but rather as a symbol of good luck.

The Prismriver Sisters (プリズムリバー三姉妹 Purizumuribaa San-shimai) are three characters named Lunasa Prismriver, Merlin Prismriver and Lyrica Prismriver, together appearing as the stage 4 boss of Perfect Cherry Blossom. Lunasa, Merlin, and Lyrica are collectively called the "Prismriver Ensemble" and perform at parties and festivals. At first sight, their instruments (Lunasa with the violin, Merlin with the trumpet, and Lyrica with the keyboard) may seem scattered and disconnected, but they still perform magnificent music. There is also a fourth Prismriver sister, named Layla Prismriver.

These three sisters are poltergeists, made by Layla Prismriver to have the appearances and personalities of her three older sisters from whom she had been separated. Thus, they are technically all the same age since they were presumably created at the same time. They only act out the roles of oldest, middle, and youngest sister based on whichever one they were made to resemble.

It is known, based on their official profiles and from comments by Eiki, that none of the original four sisters are still alive today. However, it's unknown how long ago the events that spawned these three poltergeists occurred.

Ability

Performing on musical instruments without hands or feet

In Perfect Cherry Blossom, this is the main ability that all three sisters have been specified to have. This probably derives from the ability poltergeists have, put to specific use in performing with musical instruments. By manipulating the spirits of instruments, they're able to manipulate the spirits of notes to create sounds. Since they needn't have direct contact with the instruments, they're able to play music impossible to play by hand.

Since the three sisters' musical performance is something that they have learned themselves after Layla's death, their previous abilities were probably along the lines of "moving things without hands or feet" or "making sounds without hands or feet". The former is because poltergeists in general can move things and make them float. The latter is because in the general phenomena of poltergeists, they can be heard from anywhere (a rapping noise, for example).

Youmu Konpaku (魂魄　妖夢 Konpaku Youmu) is a half-human half-phantom who lives at Hakugyokurou in the Netherworld as a gardener and swordplay instructor, who also serves for Yuyuko Saigyouji. She first appeared as the Stage 5 boss of Perfect Cherry Blossom, the seventh installment of the Touhou Project, and has since become a recurring playable character.

In Perfect Cherry Blossom, she gathered all of Gensokyo's spring at Yuyuko's instruction, which was the reason Gensokyo's winter did not end. In Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red and Chapter 13 of Curiosities of Lotus Asia, she took on the responsibility for collecting and returning the phantoms that wandered around Gensokyo as a result of the boundary of the Netherworld being thinned.

She belongs to the subspecies of phantoms called the "half-human half-phantoms" (半人半霊 "hannin hanrei" or "hanjin hanrei"). Half-human half-phantoms are the mixed-race of phantoms and humans (幽霊と人間のハーフ), which have a largish phantom accompanying them and a relativity long life span compared to humans. The phantom that always follows them is called the "half-phantom" (半霊[1]、半幽霊[2] hanrei, hanyuurei), and they are the other half of their body.[3] In Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, it was supposed that Youmu's human half manipulates the phantom half consciously. Youmu's human half has a lower body temperature compared to normal humans, and her phantom half's body temperature is not so cold compared to normal phantoms. In the Imperishable Night manual, it was written, "she has two kinds of body: human and phantom," showing Youmu to be "human" and the phantom to be "phantom."

Half-human half-phantoms are long-lived, but in Seasonal Dream Vision, since it has still not been 60 years since the time she was born, in Phantasmagoria of Flower View, she was not very knowledgeable about the "flower incident that occurs once every 60 years."

Personality

As she has a straightforward diligent personality, she is often manipulated by those around her (especially Yuyuko).[2][7] For this reason, she often fails at her task, but that does not mean that she has no real power, and she particularly excels at instantaneous force and concentration power.[8] In Immaterial and Missing Power, as literally stated by the shishou, "truth-slashing is something which you know", so she often performs tsujigiri-like moves, but Suika Ibuki pointed out that she does not think that Youmu understood her shishou's teachings.

She has strong sensitivity, and in the good ending of Imperishable Night, her human half was unable to resist the insanity-inducing effects of the true Moon, causing her to become "half-insane". Ironically enough, considering her species, she is afraid of ghost stories, dares, and darkness, but she is calm around phantoms since she is half phantom herself.  In Imperishable Night's Extra. After defeating Fujiwara no Mokou, Yuyuko pretends there is a ghost under a tree, earning a terrified shriek from Youmu. Much further on in Ten Desires, as a result of being mistaken as a hermit, she temporarily mistook herself as being a hermit. Due to artworks and her sprite in the fighting spin-offs, Youmu may be ambidextrous.

Yuyuko Saigyouji (西行寺　幽々子 Saigyouji Yuyuko) is the main antagonist of Perfect Cherry Blossom. She's the ghost "princess" head of Hakugyokurou in the Netherworld.

She first appeared as the Final Boss of Perfect Cherry Blossom, later becoming a playable character along with Youmu Konpaku (as a duo) in Imperishable Night and showing up as an expansion character in Immaterial and Missing Power, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, and Touhou Hisoutensoku. She would eventually also appear as the Stage 1 boss in Ten Desires, and as a Day 4 boss in Impossible Spell Card.

Unlike many departed spirits, Yuyuko resembles a living human; a humanoid. She is very cheerful and friendly: Her playful, good-humored personality, otherworldly beauty, and courtesan charm can have a disarming effect. She often makes bizarre and apparently nonsensical remarks and sometimes seems to overlook the obvious, leading to her characterization as an airhead or a ditz. As an instance, in Touhou Bougetsushou, she toyed with Youmu Konpaku as a daily occurrence even with Ran Yakumo present.

However, at other times she will reveal an extremely cunning and perceptive side and will also sometimes display an extraordinary level of knowledge. For instance, in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, she was the quickest character to identify the culprit as Tenshi Hinanawi when the incident was in the omen stage (Yukari Yakumo spoke of the dwindling of phantoms as Komachi Onozuka's negligence, but Yuyuko guessed correctly). Additionally, in Ten Desires, she obliquely informed the playable character about the location of the incident regarding the divine spirits. She is also known for her incredible appetite.

Ability

Manipulating death

This is the ability to, without exception and without permitting any resistance, end the life of any living being, whether it be human or youkai. The only kind of creatures immune from this are Hourai Immortals. Clearly and simply, it is an unusually and dreadfully powerful ability. Although this ability is what drove her to commit suicide and become a ghost, it seems that she hasn't forgotten this ability since then, and it seems that she can use this ability in a carefree manner (though she doesn't act carelessly in the usage of this ability). However, whether she's able to end life only to the extent of fainting, or if she invites one to death gently, is unclear. During her lifetime, the latter was true. Her Last Word "Saigyouji Parinirvana" is said to be the very incarnation of this ability.

Manipulating departed souls

This is the ability that enables her to manipulate ghosts and spirits, an ability she possessed even while she was alive. Although it's unclear what one is exactly able to accomplish with this ability, it seems to place Yuyuko on the role of the manager of the ghosts who stay for a while in the Netherworld. Because of this ability, she is able to let those from Hell stay eternally in the Netherworld.

Ran Yakumo (八雲　藍 Yakumo Ran) is the kitsune shikigami of Yukari Yakumo and is in turn the master of the bakeneko shikigami Chen.

Ran first appeared as the extra stage boss of Perfect Cherry Blossom, where she also appeared as the Phantasm stage midboss of that game, so she has the strong image of being a midboss, but even as an extra boss, she also had abilities not to be ashamed of, as she is also a long difficult battle.

She frequently appears as an attack option in the fighting games for Yukari Yakumo and has appeared in Imperishable Night as Yukari's attack.

Ran is described as being a gentle youkai, who won't start a fight unless provoked. Although Ran is a shikigami, she sometimes "forget" her position as a servant and acts of her own volition, like deciding to attack the heroine in Perfect Cherry Blossom to avenge Chen. Because of this, Yukari punishes her to remind her who the master is.

Yukari Yakumo (八雲　紫 Yakumo Yukari) is a legendary youkai who is able to manipulate boundaries. She is the master of Ran Yakumo. She is called the "gap youkai" (すきま妖怪 sukima youkai), although "gap youkai" is not the name of a species, as she is more of a one-of-a-kind type of youkai.  Regardless of her power, Yukari appears to be the most well-informed being in Gensokyo of any kind and usually achieves her goals through manipulating events rather than direct combat.

Yukari first appeared as the phantasm stage boss of Perfect Cherry Blossom with Ran Yakumo serving her as shikigami. Despite being a high-class boss compared to other Extra and Final stage bosses, she's made occasional appearances in later games. She was a playable character in Imperishable Night, partnered with Reimu Hakurei (and supported her in Subterranean Animism), and was playable in the fighting games, but was only a cameo in the background of Hopeless Masquerade. Also, she was also an Extra stage target in Shoot the Bullet and appeared on the Final Day of Impossible Spell Card.

She is one of the oldest youkai in Gensokyo, one of the strongest of youkai, and is praised as one of the wisest of youkai.[3][4]. She was one who proposed the Great Hakurei Barrier, which covers Gensokyo, and is therefore tied to Gensokyo's creation. She is the only known youkai who is able to pass this barrier in order to access the Outside World, although there are a few instances like Mamizou Futatsuiwa who's passed it. She also performs surveillance and safety administration (mainly for Ran Yakumo). She is simply one of the most mysterious youkai living in Gensokyo.

Personality[edit]

Yukari is known for being a very youkai-like youkai who sleeps all day and lives for the enjoyment of life. Though she rarely leaves her house, she's well-connected and is acquainted with most of the most powerful youkai as well as anyone having anything to do with the Great Hakurei Barrier or the outside world, although she rarely attacks humans.[3] She has a tendency to toy with her opponents rather than use her full power from the start. If anyone is suited for the role of "mastermind", it's Yukari. She excels at mathematics and is experienced due to her long life.

She possesses superhuman intellect and especially surpasses in dealing with numbers. In Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red, as Ran Yakumo said, this intellect is something that even Ran is not able to understand, to the extent that for example that she is able to determine the depths of the darkness of Avici or determine in an instant how long it would take for Ursa Major to devour the North Star, as it seems. Concretely to what extent this amazing intellect goes is hard to know, but it would be no mistake to think that this intellect far surpasses that of humans.

She often has a great deal of insight and understanding about whatever happens in Gensokyo, and possesses considerable intellectual prowess, as well. Though she seems flaky and unreliable most of the time, when the safety or security of Gensokyo is at stake, she won't hesitate to get involved, even if it means using others to do the work for her. For example, in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, she treats Tenshi Hinanawi with much hostility after finding out the plot of the Heavens. She could easily be either a villain or a heroine, depending on her whims.

Yukari deals with problems by manipulating others to act to resolve things for her. She seems to rarely act directly except in particularly egregious situations. In all cases, she rarely lets anyone know what her true aims or goals are and sometimes these goals are extremely abstract. Yukari has a well-deserved reputation of being fickle, whimsical and lying often and thus many characters in Gensokyo dislike her. For whatever reason, Yukari takes it all in stride and does not seriously deny any of those comments. She seems to actively try to keep her more obviously-altruistic actions a secret, such as her donations to the Hakurei Shrine in Strange and Bright Nature Deity. She possibly cultivates this image to ensure that people continue to fear her as a youkai, as this is what her true goal for a particularly complex gambit is revealed to be at the end of Cage in Lunatic Runagate.

Abilities and strength[edit]

Yukari is with no doubt one of the most powerful youkai in Gensokyo. She has been described as an extremely powerful being more than once,[5][6], with easily enough power to destroy all of Gensokyo if it's needed.[7]. In Silent Sinner in Blue, Yukari claimed Watatsuki no Toyohime was stronger than her and avoided a direct confrontation with her, although at the time she was purposedly letting herself being captured.

Her physical strength is what you'd expect from a youkai. While the extent of an average youkai's strength is never really specified, their bodily ability is typically very high, so her strength is still far from that of a human. There are some examples and statements which show Yukari's physical prowess:

In Curiosities of Lotus Asia Chapter 12, Yukari's hand is able to effortlessly block and brush aside a mallet swung by Rinnosuke Morichika with all his might, leaving him shocked that a small slender feminine hand was able to pull off such a feat. Rinnosuke said that it feels like he hit a pillow.

Hong Meiling, in one of her Touhou Hisoutensoku win quotes, notes that she felt a odd resistance from Yukari's body (presumably after punching and kicking her a lot), to the point where she wondered if Yukari was wearing something else under that presumably delicate dress of hers.

Yukari states in her own win quotes in Immaterial and Missing Power that she has no weaknesses, and even shooting, cutting, stabbing, hitting, or killing her is useless.[8]

By mostly moving around in gaps, one would usually not see her as doing much physical labor at all, and according to Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, since she ends up in blurting out herself such sayings like "to do mountain climbing at such an age", there is the image that she is like an indoors-type youkai, but in the end, she is still a youkai.

Manipulation of boundaries

Yukari's main ability is manipulating any kind of boundaries.[9] This ability has been described as logically being able to affect essentially anything.[10] In her monologue during A Beautiful Flower Blooming Violet Every Sixty Years, she explains that this power allows her to control or remove the boundaries between any and all things, like Gensokyo and the Outside World, the worlds of the living and the dead, humans and youkai and even the day and the night. [11]

The most common and visible application of Yukari's boundary manipulation abilities is opening "gaps" (すきま sukima) which act as portals between two places, where she's able to hold, sit on or emerge from such gaps. By manipulating borders in space and creating a chasm, she is able to link together separate places. Because of this, she's able to show up at any place and can freely travel to places like the Outside World. Within these gaps one can see a lot of eyes, which according to the description of Yukari's Magic Eye "Laplace's Demon" spell card she can also use to see. Although Yukari's gaps can ultimately connect any kind of place, in Silent Sinner in Blue she could create a gap to the "fantastic" version of the Moon only during the full moon, which is the only period of time during which the passage is open. For some unknown reason she is unable to use her powers to bring a living being on the far side of the Moon, which is where the Lunar Capital is located. She is, however, capable of freely travelling between Gensokyo and the Outside World. Yukari can create gaps through which only she can pass, or which anything can pass through.[12] Moreover, while the main use of gaps is travelling to different plances, Yukari also uses them in battle either by virtue of being able to use almost any object (such as tombstones, road signs, and even running trains) as a weapon,[13] by retreating inside them to avoid being hit or land unexpected attacks,[14] sucking in an opponent's attacks to throw them back.[15], or merging different gaps to create harmful spatial distorsions.[16]

In Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, manipulating boundaries is described as a terrifying god-like ability with no weak points which there is no defense or countermeasure against, capable of fundamentally undermining reality itself and as one of the most dangerous abilities that youkai are known to possess, while Yukari's manual profile in Imperishable Night says that "the danger and potency of her ability is beyond imagination".[17]

Ultimately, everything is built upon the existence of boundaries; if there were no boundaries everything would effectively exist as a single enormous object. Because of this, the ability to manipulate boundaries is logically an ability of both creation and destruction: by making a new boundary is to create a new existence, and to destroy a boundary is to negate an existence. For example, as said in Perfect Memento, if there was no water surface there could be no lake, if there was no sky line neither mountain nor sky could exist and were it not for the Great Barrier even Gensokyo itself wouldn't exist. Furthermore, it seems that not only are physical boundaries, but also the general idea of boundaries can be manipulated and it seems like she would be able to manipulate the boundary between dreams and reality, which could very well be how she was able to drag the real Sumireko Usami out of the Dream World in Antinomy of Common Flowers. Yukari is also capable of seeing (and seeing through) boundaries that are normally invisible; when the Human Village was displaced from history by Keine Kamishirasawa, Yukari was completely unfazed and still able to see it.[18][19] She also tells Marisa that it would easy for her to manipulate the boundary between Winter and Spring.[20]

It's shown that Yukari can control the boundaries and bend them to her will as seen in Immaterial and Missing Power when she adjusted the sky by manipulating the border between the daylight and moonlight to unite the day and the night.[21] According to Marisa Kirisame, Yukari can even control the boundary between "a danmaku for play and a danmaku for battle".[22]

Yukari is also capable of sensing and repairing damage to the Great Hakurei Barrier, and although in Perfect Cherry Blossom Yuyuko Saigyouji doubts Yukari could make such a strong barrier,[23] she has been refered to as its creator in various occasions.[24][25] To add to all this, Hieda no Akyuu writes that "manipulation of boundaries" is theoretically a godlike power which would allow Yukari to create or destroy anything, but that all the stories about it are impossible to confirm.[3]

Examples of the usage of this ability:

Neutralized Suika Ibuki's ability by forcing the oni, which was spread as mist over the entirety of Gensokyo, into her normal form so that she could be seen and interacted with by others.[26]

Adjusted the sky by manipulating the border between the daylight and moonlight, to unite the day and the night. Possibly, this also allowed Yukari to stop the night in Imperishable Night.

Manipulation of the boundary between the true and illusionary moon, which allowed her to open a gap, that lead from Gensokyo to the Moon, on the lake surface. (Lunar War, Silent Sinner in Blue)

By creating the Boundary of Fantasy and Reality, she estabilished the Outside World as the real world, and Gensokyo as an illusionary one, allowing youkai to disappear from the former and thrive in the latter. (Youkai Expansion Project, over 500 years ago)

She is widely acknowledged as the creator of the Great Hakurei Barrier, which isolates Gensokyo from the Outside World. (The Great Barrier Disturbance)

Upon Yuyuko's request, weakening the Border of Life and Death between the world of the living and the Netherworld, making it possible for denizens of both world to easily cross it. (Perfect Cherry Blossom)

When the Great Hakurei Barrier has loosened, she returned Rinnosuke Morichika to Gensokyo who has been ejected into the outside world (Curiosities of Lotus Asia)

Dragged the real Sumireko Usami out of the Dream World (Antinomy of Common Flowers)

By manipulating the border of master and slave during the Perfect Possession incident, she thwarted Joon and Shion Yorigami's scheme that allowed Joon to win any battle by forcing Shion as the enemy's slave (Antinomy of Common Flowers)

Many of her Spell Cards and attacks allude to various circumstances involving boundary manipulation or creation, such as: Barrier "Balance of Motion and Stillness", Barrier "Mesh of Light and Darkness", "Boundary of Humans and Youkai", Barrier "Charming Quadruple Barrier", between many others. The description of Yukari's "Boundary of Intellect and Feet" states that she would be able to cut anything by using boundaries, a motif also used in her Splitter "Thing That Splits All Into Two" Spell Card.

According to herself, when humans have noctambulism it's because she manipulates the boundary between sleeping and being awake.

Antinomy of Common Flowers:

Touhou 15.5: Antinomy of Common Flowers is the third and final entry in the Urban Legend Trilogy. It's one of my favorite entries in the series for its wide and fun range of characters, thrilling story, and amazing final boss theme. And this is gonna be a long one so you might want to get some snacks.

Thanks to the unresolved Urban Legend incident, rumors have been going around about a certain phenomenon called "Perfect Possession": victims get taken over by another person in not just mind, but body. Not just ghosts can do this: anyone can with the right state of mind! Naturally, the people of Gensokyo mess around with this for fun and profit. But, there are also a great many people working tirelessly to resolve this incident however possible.

Of course, as mentioned, the Urban Legend incident has not been resolved, and so everyone uses the same weird abilities as before.

The people of Gensokyo have formed some unlikely duos using this Perfect Possession. Each of these duos has a story mode making up a larger storyline, in chronological order:

• Reimu and Kasen

• Marisa and Koishi

• Nitori and Kokoro

• Mamizou and Mokou

• Miko and Byakuren

• Ichirin and Futo

• (Dream World) Reisen and Doremy

• Sumireko and Doremy

• Tenshi and Shinmyoumaru

• Yukari and Reimu (basically the final showdown against the main villains)

• Jo'on and Shion (a sort of epilogue of the main villains cleaning up their mess)

Marisa becomes a jobber! She and Koishi are the first to be defeated by the main villains, who cheat the spellcard rules to become almost invincible up until the end.

The Myouren Temple and the Divine Spirit Mausoleum reluctantly join forces to resolve this incident, but fail miserably at accomplishing anything. Still, it seems both Buddhists and Taoists

Yukari Yakumo, after sitting out the previous two major incidents, comes back for a major role in the plot! She's piecing together a plan to solve the incident.

Her urban legend is the Teke Teke: a woman severed from the waist down who lives in abandoned subway stations and crawls after you, trying to take your legs for her own! Yukari mimics this with her portals, but nobody's really cut. Still, the shock of it all appears to actually deal damage to the person she "bisects".

Tenshi Hinanawi the bratty celestial returns after a long absence! It seems she's been banished from Heaven and is having quite the temper tantrum. Her urban legend is the conspiracy theory of HAARP being a weather control machine.

Oh, and this was the first Touhou game to receive an official English translation. It is not good. It is poorly translated. So most people just stick to the fan translations as they always have.

It turns out that this Perfect Possession is not possession at all, but rather a form of teleportation. If a person is in a calm, dream-like state, another person can attach themselves to them, becoming the "slave". You'd expect the "master" to be the one doing the possession but no, it's the host. Anyway, this possessor is then sent to the Dream World, replacing the Dream World counterpart of their host. When the possession starts, their host and them switch dimensions. But what happens to the Dream World counterpart? They get pushed out into the real world!

This is the true negative side effect of the Perfect Possession incident, and it wasn't even on purpose!

Everyone in the world has a Dream World counterpart. They can often act very differently than you would in any situation. As I mentioned in Doremy's profile, they can be thought of as an exaggeration of one's true self. More specifically, they effectively treat the world as if it were a video game and they suffered no consequences for any of their actions. You might think based on the actions of the Dream selves that people are truly evil at heart, but that's not entirely true. I made the video game comparison because much as liking violent video games doesn't necessarily make you a bad person, these Dream World counterparts don't make their real world selves evil villains. When I say suffering no consequences for their actions, that includes actually hurting anyone. Basically, the less a Dream World counterpart acts like their real self, that doesn't mean the real world is hiding more, it just means they care more about the consequences of their actions.

Doremy Sweet, ruler of dreams, has attached herself to each of these Dream World counterparts to keep an eye on them. While she makes no effort to steer them away from wreaking havok, she also explains the situation to anyone willing to listen. When the Dream World counterparts are fought, however, Doremy sits there and does nothing, weakening the dream selves against a Perfect Possession duo.

I'M NOT DONE YET! YOU SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN A SNACK!

Some notable Dream World counterparts:

• Marisa Kirisame is revealed to harbor jealousy towards Reimu and Yukari for stealing the "main character role" from her.

• Reisen Udongein Inaba has a great deal of pent-up aggression against the people of Gensokyo for their bullying of her, and lashes out at anyone in her path. Her actions lead to her real self getting put under house arrest.

• Toyosatomimi no Miko has a staunch sense of justice, to a fanatical degree. She wishes she had killed the Yorigami Sisters for being as evil as they are.

• Byakuren Hijiri apparently dreams of putting bombs in the heads of uncooperative disciples to ensure their obedience. This is the Dream World counterpart least like her real world self. Basically, it appears to be her hidden lazy side: she doesn't want to have to actually go through the effort of convincing people her way is the right one. Dream World Byakuren also wants a button to exist somewhere to instantly attain enlightenment, rather than having to do all this meditation and such. Remember, she hasn't done this in private, merely the idea of doing it has entered her head. In fact, when someone at the temple sees this Dream World Byakuren, it doesn't disillusion them. Quite the exact opposite: they come to the conclusion that if she can act so against her innermost desires on a daily basis in the name of helping others, than there might be hope for them, too.

• Mamizou wants to take over Gensokyo, and then the world, and rule it with an iron fist, annihilating anyone she doesn't like. Yet at the same time, she also has horrifying nightmares of being hunted down and killed by humans, apparently trauma from the Outside World.

• Nitori's Dream World counterpart is actually NICER than her real one. She has none of the greed she exhibits normally and is simply a curious inventor who wants to make new machines all day long. Doremy admires such a pure soul.

• Reimu Hakurei is also nicer in the Dream World. It proves that deep down she just wants a quiet, peaceful life without hardship.

• Koishi's dream self is basically dead, thanks to Koishi closing off all but her subconscious mind. Koishi doesn't dream ever.

• And finally, Tenshi's Dream World counterpart is practically the game's Extra boss. She's the most powerful and megalomaniacal of the Dream selves. She acts like a ranting supervillain, talking about wanting to annihilate the world and create a new one in its place.
