dana tan’s rat trauma is tbh one of the most interesting parts of batman beyond and i wish they had done even more w it! my points ig (evidence & my thoughts)

id argue that she displays the four characteristics of ptsd! (obviously there’s a limit to how much is actually shown bc she’s a side character who doesnt actually get a lot of screentime and it’s media from the late 90s/early 2000s, only like 20 years after ptsd became an actual diagnosis iirc) ANYWAY

exposure to trauma (bb s2ep9): patrick (ratboy) stalks and kidnaps dana, bringing her to his weirdass sewer home and tracks her down when she tries to escape, putting her in a terrifying situation & evoking strong feelings of helplessness. (i also imagine she could have some guilt over her part in causing the fire, even though it was in self defense). just complicated feelings overall, as she says she feels bad for him and how it was pathetic and terrifying.

intrusive symptoms (bb99 #17): she gets a flashback when nelson throws a rat onto her head during a science class which is a rlly interesting scene bc of how it depicts the rat in her eyes - malicious and huge, a clear flashback to the giant rats patrick had & threatened her with. rats of all kinds are clearly a trigger for her.

avoidance of triggers (bb99 #17): she avoids the sight of rats - closing her eyes and refusing to look at them both when the rat is on her and when terry is holding her away from the rats when they go crazy - as well as avoiding them in general: “get it off me - leave me alone! tell them to leave me alone!”

chronic heightened arousal (bb99 #17): she displays a lot of anxiety and paranoia regarding rats, thinking that she’s being watched (they are, but she isnt actually aware of that) and that the rats are out to get her: “the way it looked at me… the way they all looked at me… like they knew me. like they were trying to tell me something.”

there isnt actually really a point to this i just rlly like that they actually thought about how the whole experience would impact her and how it has an actual lasting effect on her!!

i think there could be a rlly interesting narrative when she finds out patrick survived (again) bc the closure she gets at the end of issue #17 would get ripped away like it did when she found out he survived the fire (“he’s gone. i’d know if he was still alive. i’m sure of it.”). vigilante dana when.

"Rhythm and blues was too good to remain a black secret for long and as the fifties dawned, certain musically adventurous white DJs started to add it to their playlists. By 1956 a quarter of the best-selling US records would be by black singers. George recounts the amazing tale of Vernon Winslow, a former university design teacher with a deep knowledge of jazz, who was denied a radio announcing job on New Orleans' WJMR simply because he was black. After what seemed like a successful interview, Winslow, who was quite light-skinned, was asked, 'By the way, are you a nigger?' Denied an on-air job merely because of his race, Winslow was hired for a most extraordinary job. He was to train a white DJ to sound black. Winslow had to feed a white colleague - now christened Poppa Stoppa - with the latest local slang, teaching him to say things like 'Look at the gold tooth, Ruth' and 'Wham bam, thank you ma'am'. The show became a smash. One night, frustrated by his behind-the-scenes existence, Winslow snuck a turn at the mic. He was fired immediately. Saturday, May 11th 2024. Wellington.

Today was our final day in Wellington before we leave early tomorrow morning for the south island, and it was a refreshingly relaxed coach-free affair (childhood me could never have imagined travelling this much all week and not vomming every five minutes, I guess my years of increasing the profits for Megabus has paid off).

We met and had a talk from Daniel Reeve, a lovely chap who was responsible for nearly all the calligraphy and many of the maps and illustrations in the LOTR and Hobbit films. We weren't allowed to photograph any of his illustrations as he technically doesn't own the rights, but if you've literally seen the title for the films or bought yourself even a mug with Frodo's name on it then you'll have seen his work. Jake and I decided that the thrashing our wallets received yesterday was insufficient, so we decided to pick up a couple of posters between us that Daniel kindly signed. Jake got a poster of the Shire, and I got a poster of Gollum because he reminds me of my would-definitely-betray-you-the-moment-you-stopped-feeding-him-chicken cat (Wilson if you're reading this I haven't forgotten about you, two more weeks to go bb xo). 

Afterwards, Jake and I decided to temporarily part ways for our the rest of our afternoons in Welly (not in a negative way or anything like that, we're just completely sick of each other). I finally did my laundry and ironing (the most satisfying part of this trip so far) and then I had a wander around the harbour before popping into Te Papa Museum. Having already been to Auckland's museum I didn't spend too long in here, although in contrast to the hobbits we've encounteted they had these gargantuan figures of soldiers of The Gallipoli Campaign (about 4x the size of an actual person, and coincidentally made and supplied by Weta).

For dinner, we went to Mama Brown - New Zealand's finest American diner with McKenzie and Joseph (the Alabamians, which is a nickname I'm sure they'd really appreciate). Tomorrow, we're off to NZ: 2 The South Island via ferry and then a coach down to Nelson. Apparently, there's a notable temperature drop in the south, so it might be time to finally hang up my beloved shorts for good (RIP, you were the real Frodo and Sam of this journey).

Finally on the plane. Seated next to Kieran (old BB League Champion). He's pretty closed off, and not very talkative. He's still very upset about his loss against Jules.

I feel like he's slowly opening up to me, though. He's been interested in my Pokémon, even if he tries to hide it.

He's even currently lightly petting Nelson, who's between us, when he thinks that I won't notice.

He seems like such a nice kid. I really want to help him through whatever he's going through right now. No one should be so angry at the world.

Going to sleep now. Hopefully the next time I wake up, I'll be in Medali.
