radiation poisoning from my libertarian grandpa :(
(page 779-791)
A few days of updates here! I was kinda mad about the Fruit Update on the 18th. I like captchalogue mechanics, it’s fun to see how all the different modi work and the different situations characters can get into when the modi go wrong. But a five page update of just picking up fruit was too much for me. I simply could not find an interesting thing to say about that.
But now we’ve seen more of Jade’s house, and it’s… a lot. Her atrium having four wings might be relevant later, but doesn’t mean much yet – same with the beautiful pink and yellow clouds outside. Her real instrument looks like a bass guitar (due to its four strings). A trend I noticed before of the kids’ rooms getting messier and houses and lives getting weirder with each successive introduction definitely peaks here. Jade’s room is littered with plushies, plants, guns and uranium, and her grandfather might be the strangest of the four guardians, stranger than a business clown, a ventriloquist rapper, or a woman who builds a cat mausoleum with a secret passage.
Jade’s grandfather is a ‘WORLD RENOWNED EXPLORER-NATURALIST-TREASURE HUNTER-ARCHEOLOGIST-SCIENTIST-ADVENTURER-BIG GAME HUNTER-BILLIONAIRE EXTRAORDINAIRE’ (p.790) which doesn’t paint a great picture to me. That description suggests a man whose quest for personal glory eclipses any regard for other cultures, the environment, health and safety guidelines, or anyone ‘weaker’ than he is. He probably ‘discovered’ the frog statue island we see in WV: Ascend and took it as a trophy, raising his family there even if that’s not the best thing for the island ecosystem or his granddaughter’s life and health.
Jade’s bed and her two closets (below and inside her room) are all topped with strange reddish orbs on spires. It could be coincidence – there’s only so many shapes – but they remind me of the orb spires the kernelsprites land in after hatching (p.424), and as such, could have some connection to her strange powers. Jade’s other contraptions, gadgets and gizmos are a mystery to me – I know the window is a Problem Sleuth reference, but for the photoshopped in devices, I can barely begin to speculate. I do think that given the sciences of appearification, transportalization, alchemy, sylladices and strife specibi, these probably don’t have the same in-universe applications as their real world references. Physics simply works differently in the world of Homestuck, and I’m trying to make fewer assumptions about the world’s fundamentals (beyond gravity, which we’ve witnessed often).
Jade has been so associated with prognostication and esoteric knowledge that finding out she is also a nuclear physicist, a very different type of knowledge, was such a moment of characterization whiplash that puts her at both extremes of the science-religion dichotomy.
The uranium nuggets in Jade’s room, and recurring atomic symbol on her contraptions matching the bunker’s fuel gauge, are more connections between her and WV. But her room contains nods to all her friends, too. Her Slimer poster and magic chest are obvious John references. Her Squiddles poster and plushes are something Rose likes enough to put on a shirt, really hurting her dark eldritch aesthetic, and the anthropomorphic Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff art is signed TO: GG FROM: TG (he even drew his stupid record symbol). Worse, the Manthro Chaps Jade collects are definitely part of the Smuppets line of products; their design is so similar.
A becquerel is the standard unit of radioactive decay per second, and luckily for Jade, one becquerel is not harmful to human health – in fact, human bodies are constantly undergoing several thousand Bq of radioactive decay (even the skeleton has its own radioactive isotopes). I wonder if this is Jade’s cute name for her pet because she loves science, or if this creature has been mutated by Jade or her grandfather’s experimentation, and got the name that way. It could explain why Dave calls Bec a ‘devilbeast’ (p.382) and thinks he should be shot. (Seeing Jade’s gun collection also makes this line feel way too real).
JADE SHIRT DESIGNS TALLY: Atom, Leaf, Pumpkin, Slimer, Spirograph, Squiddle, Creature
> Jade: Engineer a glass case for your URANIUM and store it outside.
#homestuck#reaction#meanest thing I ever did to my dnd players was to give them a crystal ball#and then 2 sessions later have the cutest kobold kid come up to them like ‘can I have my orb back’#anyway they ended up making him a new enchanted orb and also taking him to the most dangerous place in the whole universe#so thats my thoughts on orbs!#also i know im ignoring the word count.... my deep commitment to bits vs my desire to write endlessly abt homestuck are At War#chrono

what 6 instruments do you play? why and how did you decide to start playing them? is it something from now or from childhood??
i play; guitar (both acoustic and electric), piano, drum kit, bass, ukulele, xylophone
i can also play (kinda): glockenspiel, alto saxophone, trumpet, flute and violin
i started the guitar when i was about 4-5 because i thought it was really cool but then i quit like 2 years later because i hated practising. then i started singing and i loved it and still do.
in 2020 i got bored and started teaching myself guitar again, then my grandpa gave me his old piano and i taught myself that.
in 2021 i started drumming for my school and i still do (little bit less)
chistmas of 2021 i got given a ukulele by my grandparents and i dont use it regularly but its always fun and i find it super easy
then in 2022 i joined a band as a bassist because i had always thought it could be fun and my experience as a guitarist made it quite easy for me to pick up. then this year my sister started playing bass so i've been stealing hers to get more practise in!
the xylophone is just something i picked up by doing percussion for my school and in various bands and stuff. its kind of a combination of drumming and piano and i love ittt
as a kid i was exposed to music if that makes sense. like i did dance and i did performing arts programs and i just was always around music. i went to my first concert at the age of 2 and loved live music.
my dad played in a jazz band for years and my mother js loves music and i guess i just picked it up. ive always been naturally good at picking up instruments and working it out.
taking it more seriously has been a recent adaptation but music is one of my favourite things ever so idkk

instructions: tag ten people you’d like to know better
i was tagged by: the sweetest and most darling @mudhorns
name: I scoot between Apollo and Oliver - either are good! Apollo is for the newer crowd.
starsign: Leo sun, Taurus moon, Virgo rising - I am told I have a “wholesome chart” and, you know what, yeah.
hogwarts house: Slytherin sun, Gryffindor moon, Hufflepuff rising. I will not be taking questions or criticism at this time.
height: 5′6 - average baby size.
favorite animal: I love a giraffe. House cats win on principal because I would die for any cat I come across. Big fan of trash cats, dogs, and pandas too - opossums, skunks, and racoons.
dogs or cats: see above. Love dogs sm but cats? Flawless. Spectacular.
when you made your blog: You think I want to broadcast how long I’ve been in this hellhole?
why you made your blog: for the gay shit
reason for your url: edward kaspbrak is my broken son
what i am wearing: Sweatpants, this terrible tank top that is the comfiest thing I own, and a black bandana to keep my disgusting quarantine hair out of my face. These are comfort hours.
dream vacation: I’d love to do a round trip of Europe. I was born in the UK, but didn’t move beyond my hometown and a town in Scotland where my grandpa lived. Going back to Scotland is something I would like to do as a long term thing, but in regards to vacationing - I’d love to flounce my way through Italy and Germany, dip my horrible self over to Greece, peep France a lil, then roll back over to the UK to chill with family.
instruments: Oof, okay, you ready? I play the violin and the piano, and I sing. I can vaguely strum out some tunes on the ukelele. I have played, and have since given up, the bass guitar, the french horn, the clarinet, and the saxophone.
celebrity crushes: it’s james acaster and I don’t want to talk about it i love him
random facts:
what’s your job: I’m a full time student! Ow ow! Would have gone back to barista-ing this summer if the world hadn’t said no.
if you could go back to school would you: I’m hoping to go back to the UK once I graduate to do a masters in classical theatre!

do you think aliens are real: Yeah and I’m afraid of them.
what’s your guilty pleasure: I don’t really believe in ‘guilty’ pleasures because I don’t think you should feel guilty for enjoying the things that you enjoy. The thing I’m most reluctant to express enjoyment for in the real world is South Park. It norty but it make me gigle :c (I feel like I should also shout out Until Dawn as a guilty pleasure because I’ve played it 6 times, and forcing other people to play it is one of my favourite activities? The guilt isn’t in enjoying the content, it’s in bullying everyone else to enjoy the content with me.)
tattoos: None, but I’d like one someday! Maybe! I’m very afraid of permanent things! It’s also not something I can be willy nilly about since I want to go into classical theatre. I think I’d like to get something Les Mis related?
any phobias: I am so afraid of butterflies and moths. Petrified. It’s not cute. I’m Blathers.

It was going to happen either way (All Might x Reader) Chapter 1/5
I have a few things to. say: I wrote this story last year (2018) because I was feeling down, I just remembered that it existed in my note app. A few songs were inspired, I will linked them down below, just beware that they are in Spanish, which is why I provided the english lyrics.
~~~
Your dream became a reality.
You became the number 1 musician in the world, with tickets being sold out every time you had a concert to sing at. Your quirk was Empathy, and you used your quirk with the music you made. Being a hero was something you always wanted to be, inspired by the all mighty All Might. Something about him made you happy and his warming grin was it.
But you failed, not having a powerful quirk you knew that you were destined to become a hero but it didn't come to you what until you listened to music. When you were happy, you listened to the music but when you were sad, you listened to the lyrics and it was so weird how music could do that to you, in relating to the music, feeling the emotions.
At age 17, you were given a guitar by your grandpa who was a less popular guitarist and he taught you how to play
In the family reunions, you sang for your family. You let the strumming of your guitar and the lyrics reached into their hearts and understand your message. If it was a happy song, they would get happy. If it was sad, they would get sad. It was a way for you to show your realism ideology to people and you were discovered by a music agency. You were in a hero program, not U.A. because of your lack of combat skills but a program to gain knowledge of heroism. You didn't mind it wasn't U.A. but it was a longshot. You worked hard to graduate with honors and to work in the music agency. You met Present Mic there because of his Mic quirk and you were just intrigued of it. The agency was a hero agency but it also provided music production. You met a lot of people who had instrumental quirks, like a Bass Drum that used his belly to produce the ugliest and the most beautiful bong. The ugliest cause villains to be in pain in their ear drum, the beautiful part was used in the band.
You were the only one that did not have an instrumental quirk but the first one to use your quirk in music that can help people.
In the recording booth, you sat on the chair and when signaled, began singing:
If only you had told me
The truth always
If only you responded to my calls
If only you loved me when I loved you
You would've been in my dreams as the best man
If you didn't know how to love, now is the time to march!
If only you had known what I suffered for you
Having to forget you without knowing why
And now you call, you want to see me
You vowed you changed and think of returning.
Get away from me, there's nothing left to talk about.
With you I lost, now I have someone to win.
And that, was the start of your music career.
The women and even men understood your music, the breakups that lead to crying only made them stronger in finding relationships. Girls would send you fan-mail about them forgetting their ex and finding someone who truly change their life for better and you would respond. That was when your fans were from 200 to 300.
Now, you would send videos of your respond as you read comments from your phone along with your boyfriend (named Hiroki Tsuki, who was number 2 in music), thanking them and responding to the questions. You were kind-hearted, emotional, sympathetic and golden-hearted. With his popularity, you went up to rank 3 but you didn't care since you were blinded by the love you received from him, when you alone and out in public.
In the interviews, you were asked who inspired you to go to the music industry and you responded with:
"I've always wanted to be a hero, and it was every hero that would push me further into having some kind of cool quirk, saving people, making sure they have the best life they can enjoy. But one hero in specific gave me that hope to continue...All Might. When I was given the results and rejected by U.A., I didn't let it affect me, because All Might's smile...he, in some way was giving me this sense of "Don't give up, there's something for you, you just have to search for it"."
You sounded so dreamily, as if he was your prince charming and you were 20 when you gave that answer.
In another interview, you were surprised to see All Might walk out of the curtains in his hero costume. In person, he was incredibly handsome, and the smile you admired for so many years, was bright with hope.
The host of the show made you two play a game after the interview to give entertainment for the audience. The premise here is simple. You square off against a friend in a game of blackjack. The person who loses each hand gets, well, a hand — to the face. And, really, what's more fun than slapping someone with giant prosthetic digits? Playing with All Might who was the inspiration of the giant, foamy hands was a lot of fun and you two were enjoying the game more than expected. He would laugh so heartedly when you had to place the giant hand on his face and you stifled your laughs every time he did it to you.
After it was over, you were inspired to write a song, called "Give you a Kiss." that left people with pleads and theories that you two were dating and your boyfriend jealous.
The lyrics that made so many "(All Might x y/n ship-name)" fans born and take over the internet was:
"To love you how I love you is complicated
Thinking how I think of you is a sin
To look at you like I do is prohibited
Touch you how I want to is a crime
Now I don't know what to do
For you to be okay
To turn off the sun to light up your smile
Speak in Portuguese
Learn to talk French
Or bring the moon to your feet
I only want to give you a kiss
And give you my mornings
Sing to calm your fears
I want you to not miss a thing."
When that was published, you were ranked number 1 from fans' support and the music productions.
That was also when hell was at your doorstep. You were eating with your boyfriend in a restaurant, you peacefully and he was tensed. You noticed but you didn't want to ask, he was like this for a long time and you were afraid of him hurting you with words. You gulped softly and risked it all, just so you can get it out of the way, "What's wrong, Tsuki?"
You sounded so calm, you wanted to let him know that you wanted to talk about it and he took it the wrong way. Even your quirk didn't work on him. He was too prideful and too angry, his emotions controlled him.
The next thing you didn't expect and it felt like it was going slow when you saw him push the table away, causing many gasps and screams to appear. You sat there, in shock and you saw a beast right across you.
"YOURE CHEATING ON ME ARENT YOU?! WITH THAT STUPID HERO, ALL MIGHT!! ARENT YOU?!"
You were humiliated but you continued to sit there, "I'm not...you should know this Tsuki...You read all my messages, I know how Open I am..."
He scoffs, his eyes going red. His quirk was mood. His eyes change color by which mood he was, now you really knew he was mad and he was capable of hurting you and others but you sat there in shock, not knowing what to do. His target was you, that you knew.
"YES, I KNOW HOW OPEN YOU ARE." And he chuckles, "I WAS THE ONE WHO OPENED YOU UP!!!"
You felt tears go down your cheeks, you couldn't believe your ears. He was betraying you and humiliating you further.
"DID "HE" OPEN YOU UP MORE? HUH?! DID YOU OPEN UP FOR HIM?!"
"YOU IDIOT!" You cried out, looking down a bit. "YOU IDIOT IDIOT IDIOT!!!" Paparazzis were taking pictures and videos of the incident. Some people were already recording.
You cried, hoping someone was going to save you and you silently prayed for someone to save you and it was your security. Police arrived and pushed the paparazzi out of the way and held down Tsuki to take him to jail for public destruction in the restaurant.
You were taken to your house and you called the agency to cancel your tours and interviews. You were in your house for 2 months crying and screaming. Paparazzi tried to get you vulnerable but you were completely isolated, thanks to your security, it was very likely you can cry in peace.
You watched TV, news about the scene that ocurred. The humiliation that made you go through and to start blaming on All Might.
"If he hadn't been in the host show, Tsuki wouldnt have been jealous."
"You stupid All Might fans, is this what you support? The violence that had to go through the greatest couple in the world? Stop this Ship now!!"
You were infuriated that they do that when he had no relation to it. You haven't posted on social media in that time frame, you haven't even turned on your phone to avoid calls and messages until now.
You opened up your laptop and read every message. Many called you vulgar names, some gave you inspiring messages, that it was going to end soon, that was going to be okay. Someone even gave you the link to your first song. The song that started all. The song of betrayal and going forward. Your mind took control and made you look at the TV screen, to see a sad host older woman of the show.
"...I will risk my own life, my own job just to say this in front of the cameras and I hope your watching this (y/n). And I hope you ungrateful people watch this. I am a quirkless human, I have a family. (Y/n) had a terrible day and you defending the awful Hiroki tsuki is worse than being called a criminal. What has she done to him? To you? You remember how she started? By singing from her heart, from her emotions. To let you know that you are not alone and through her music to help you move on. After this ocurred, what did you do?" She was glaring at the camera, her fist clenched. You cried silently as you heard her defend you. You released your quirk, for kilometers so everyone can feel what you felt. The pure sadness that erupted from you. You saw the lady on TV stop glaring and her eyes start tearing up. " I know I'm not the only feeling that...you guys feel that? She's sad!! She sad for what you made! SHE MADE MUSIC FOR YOU, TO HELP YOU RECOVER AND NOW THAT THIS HAPPEN, WHO IS GOING TO BE THERE FOR HER?! WELL, I AM HERE! (Y/N), I AM HERE!!!"
Your quirk was on for more than two minutes and such power made you bleed through your mouth, coughing out a bit and when hearing that from her, you smiled small and that emotion travelled through the people until it got to the woman again. She relaxed a bit and smiled softly.
"Let me in honey...please...my sweet daughter...let me be there for you." As she let the tears roll down her face. There was a sense of hope, until you felt a quick pain in your head from a whack that immediately stopped your quirk to function as you fell unconsciously on the fell and the man in the shadows, with maroon eyes glared at you.
He punched the wall and that caused the news and paparazzi to look over at your house. To see you in your white pajamas being taken by someone fast. He laughed for a short while he taken you somewhere.
Best of 2019 Future Funk Release 1/4: Toyama’s Love Island by Skule Toyama
A common argument I get into on audiophile and vinyl forums — that by virtue of interest and venue tend to skew boomer (who isn’t on discord now? Answer: Your grandpa.) — often revolves around the raison d’être of pressing future funk. In an earlier piece, I gave my opinion on the subject — but I didn’t really evidence the critique by many opposing audiophiles. As far as they’re concerned, I might as well be collecting Funko Pops — that is to say that these presses aren’t worthy of serious hi-fi consideration and are merely collector’s items. To their credit, when posting about my experiences with the genre, most of these aged audiophiles scratch their head not at the anime art on the box nor at the picture disks (usually reviled by the old-heads)— but at the oft-digital source itself. These guys are the ostensibly cool uncles with the dope music collection, after all.
While they often are a wealth of information on the analog format, and voracious consumers of early City Pop — a genre beloved by audiophiles, — forums like this tend to create feedback loops of retrograde understanding. Their enjoyment of all things analog turns them into intense luddites, often to the point where I question why they are interfacing with a computer in the first place, that dreaded source for the perceived decline of their hi-fi culture.
I’ve more or less given up on the prospect of turning them around on the subject of future funk. However, this summer, on a thread where we review recent vinyl purchases and upload lossless rips, I made a rather pedestrian post about how much I enjoyed Skule Toyama’s latest release — Toyama’s Love Island. And to my complete and utter surprise, my vinyl-to-digital rip of “Sunset Hasn’t Come Yet” brought all the boys to the yard. While I got my usual peanut gallery of “lol future funk, lol vaporwave, buy jazz” posts, its turns out more than a few Joe Boomers with vintage, $10k-valued Sansui stereo sets could vibe with this too. You know, the purely purists of the pure.
This caused me to consider for a time precisely why Toyama Love Island whispered to these boomers I share a particular corner of internet space with. What about it warmed the heart of these old men so cold to cold media? It obviously had to be something more than the mastering or the press itself. Most of these guys had been engaged in serious listening to absolute titans in their craft for forty plus years now. Many had studio experience themselves. Even now, I don’t have a really good answer. The best one I can supply is this: the warmth that emanates from Toyama Love Island can melt even the iciest heart. Cliche? No doubt. Apropos? Of course.
PART 1: THE MUSIC
Intro warms us up with a minute-long evergreen bit. By whom and what from— I genuinely don’t know (perhaps that’s the appeal for me personally, the mystery but also the universality)— but the punch line certainly feels nostalgic, and the horns do too.
Have a Good Time fronts the funk after a minute-long intro track. It’s an absolutely fantastic true open because of its principal horn loop that absolutely claws into your cerebral cortex and takes root there. Between listens, I found myself humming it while brewing a pot of coffee. While it’s not my favorite of the tracks on the album, its pure energy and catchiness is a master class on how future funk albums should inject you with an uncut hit of unapologetic brass funk within the first couple minutes.
Electricity takes the initial energy of Have a Good Time and subtly ratchets up the vibe with clever layering and a sweet progression. While my initial take on my first listen was that the bass was too muted (a slight boost from the hi-fi set of your choice can obviously erase that distinction quickly!) — I warmed to the mix after hearing how well it meshed with the following track.
Love Island serves as a sort of kinetic climax to the first quarter of the album and a great midpoint for the A-side, but the treble feels just slightly compressed and off-balance on the wax here. After fiddling with EQ and my pre-amp settings on the second listen, the track came through vastly better. My suggestion is to subtract here and there if you have a Japanese-built set that tends to run bright. After doing so on the 2nd listen, Love Island began to shine — and the distorted loops that seemed discordant on my initial listen were brought back into a more complimentary role with the rest of the piece.
Midnight Mall is my absolute favorite of the album because it just unabashedly brings the boogie with a pure, slap-worthy bass, crisp midrange from the intermittent horn flares, and absolutely atmospheric vocal compliments. Although Love Island is a strong title track, so to speak — I really do think Midnight Mall is the true baby-maker banger of 2019. For peak enjoyment, boost the bass a little on your stereo, add mood lighting and engage in the wholesome romantic activity (impassioned stares, hand-holding) of your choice.
Sunset Hasn’t Come Yet is the boomer whisperer. My guess regarding what makes this track appeal so authentically to the boomer crowd is the strength of its arrangement. You get a comfy arrangement throughout, a bass twang that sounds like its straight outta Miami Vice coupled with very moody Japanese vocals. For a future funk record, this feels like the track most in sync with its roots, creating a very authentic, fun sound.
Marsala’s effortless sonic transition from Sunset Hasn’t Come Yet’s stage is definitely a highlight of this album’s pretty flawless composition and arrangement. It feels very much like a palette cleanser for the album’s first half, and is perfect for an LP format — as you feel this transition writ large by the very nature of the format. The blaring synths feel like they would meld into place effortlessly with a Michael Mann-directed denouement to a period action-psych drama.
Flying Star is a soft reset to the album from a vibe standpoint, and is competent at what it does in the overall scope of the album. My only significant criticism of Skule Toyama’s output — which is somewhat present here — is that they don’t really let the vocals carry enough water. While exquisitely layered in relation to the rest of the piece, I want to hear the vocals take up a sort of primary mantle in the soundstage in a track like this. We get it in Flying Star’s middle third, but it does feel like a sort of pointless delay in gratification. A track like this has a chance to capture the listener and bring them into the sonic space. It comes just short of doing that.
Sailor Moon Rock manages to decimate that previous criticism by running at me and grabbing the tempo by the collar with an absolutely fire set of loops and immediately accelerate. I love it for that, and is definitely the B-side’s strongest composition. We get some no-doubt nasty guitar riffs and some iconic SFX that really bring this track together and make a B-side banger exemplar, reason enough to flip the wax.
Keep On Going brings us closest to a synth-wave composition that we get in the entire album on the track’s first third, but finds its funk at the ideal moment. It definitely succeeds in fleshing out of the B-side, and creates its niche on the project subtly but at the same time, at the risk of seeming hyperbolic — brilliantly.
Do Me definitely feels the most “Nu-Disco” of both the side and the overall album. It’s definitely one of those tracks that you can both happily wait for in the queue and then just revel in — knowing that while the record nears its conclusion, you get a track that just would not at all be out of place in a Shibuya nightclub circa 1979 or weave its way into a Haruki Murakami novel.
Outro is a perfect closing for the album, but I question the utility of making it the penultimate track instead with the inclusion of the bonus track. That said, it’s impossible not to vibe with the arrangement and layering of this piece. My hope is that when I die and arrive at the pearly gates (admission pending), St. Peter (recently taking up a hobby in DJing to pass eternity) will have a special edition pressing of that will have this as the final track on the wax.
Live Now! is definitely the track I feel coolest about. A good piece on the whole, just feels a bit out of step with the rest of the project. But I’m never going to look the gift horse in the mouth when it comes to the prospect of additional music, so a welcome addition nonetheless.
PART 2: VINYL EXPERIENCE
I really like the Toyama Love Island purple wax. This seemingly benign statement is no doubt going to incur a chorus of audiophiles in that forum criticizing me for this. Vinyl is not designed — as much as some will tell you, to be a perfectly neutral hi-res medium. There is natural warmth, scratchiness, minor distortion — et cetera. It also features natural imperfections that develop over time — like any piece of physical media. What’s more, some perceived hiccups on the overall master might actually be caused by a slight offset or error in the press, a common and natural occurrence when dealing with physical media like this. That’s why graphic equalizers were so prominent in vinyl hi-fi set in its late 1970s/early 1980s heyday. This is just an aspect of the vinyl experience.
Toyama’s Love Island features, in my view, a few of these imperfections. But these imperfections are nothing major — a quick re-equalization (oxymoronic, but I’m sure you know what I’m getting at here) a little fiddling around with the pre-amp here and there — these are natural to any experience and remind me why I became fascinated with the hobby in the first place — to maximize an audio experience. If every indie press gave that to me out of the box, well, what’s the point of the system that I own? It exists to provide a platform for a rich, diverse, and vibrant sonic experience. But the platter is just decorative without real warmth coming from the music, and Toyama’s Love Island brings that in droves.
My Pet Flamingo has a long (in vaporwave measurements, obviously) history of putting out quality physicals. Toyama’s Love Island builds upon this with a big’ol brick and a heaping slab of mortar. I’m also a big fan of MFP’s visuals. I’m not sure who they use to make the sleeves, but I think they’re generally constructed well, and the cover images that grace them never feel compressed or feature much in the way of artifacts. When you become deeply intimate with a vinyl sleeve, you start to notice these things — and I’ve never had this inkling when fingering a Flamingo release, so kudos to the label’s curation.
The mix feels exceptionally bright on my current system, and that has been a consistent point of curiosity with My Pet Flamingo releases. My guess is whatever they test their masters on is engineered by a British/American company not named “KEF” — think Cambridge, Wharfedale, McIntosh, etc — or a damper sounding Japanese unit like Technics or Yamaha. Again — I don’t see this as a problem, just a note to those running more traditional Japanese (80s Harman, Sansui, TEAC) or Nordic systems (B&O, Blaupunkt) that tend towards that end of the spectrum.
With obvious digital and analog appeal, Toyama’s Love Island is the closest thing to a “holistic” future funk release that I can think of — which makes me wonder why Skule Toyama’s hasn’t blown up yet. Only a matter of time, I’d guess — especially after earning a nod from this little outfit, I’d hope.
Just a little forewarning, these pictures might be blurry, and that's just because my phone camera has this little thing called sun damage. So just deal with it. First up, we have my cute little door. I hung up my “Surf’s Up” sign and flower necklace thing (idk how to spell it). It’s a cute little foresight into who I am.
After you open my door and walk in, this is the view you’re greeted with. Yes, that is a wall of mirrors, and yes, I dance in front of them like an idiot. Pretty basic so far, yeah? Let’s take a closer look.
This is directly above where my head goes when I sleep, fun fact. So lets start on the top shelf and work our way down. My best friend gave me the “Friends will help you...” sign before our senior year of high school, and even though we went through a phase of not speaking, I kept it anyway. I’m really glad I did, because she’s the best thing since sliced bread. ANYWAY, next to it are the two photo albums I have from my adventures in California. I marched in the 2016 Rose Parade with the Wyoming All-State Marching Band. Those little pins stuck into my headboard are from that year. There’s a compass that says “Find your adventure” which was the motto for the parade, and then there’s WASMB’s trading pin. And we’re moving on again. Next to the photo albums is a cute little R2D2 that I got in Disneyland when I was there for the parade. The little airplane in front of it was given to me when I was six by my grandpa who owns the real life version of the toy plane. The mini Statue of Liberty is from my time spent in NYC when I was in fifth grade. The very wilted rose is from work. I stole it one day when I was having a really tough day. Next is my cute little cactus! His name is Harry and I’m really excited to take him to college with me. The toy horse is from my younger days when I played with horses all the time, wishing to ride and be out in the country with them all day. And then finally, the picture behind the horse is of myself and three of my very dear friends on Valentine’s Day this year. We went on a road trip and did a bunch of super fun things together. My friend Lindee knew how hard it was going to be on me, having just got out of a relationship, so she and her boyfriend planned the whole outing to remind me that love exists in more than just the romantic form. It was one of the best days of my year.
Moving on to my little “end table”. I obviously hate candles. And fun fact (which ties into my door theme), all of them are tropical scented. Except the Candlelights, which, to be fair, I didn’t pick out so that’s why they’re different. My current favorite candle is my Aloha Colada one, which is the white one in the front. You can also see my hair brush that I forgot to clean out after I finished brushing my hair this morning, my hand sanitizer, and my little phone stand thing.
This is my new favorite corner of my room. It’s where I sit and watch Netflix, YouTube, read books, and just generally chill. I dig it.
This is my chair, a little close up. I have a little table I set up whenever I’m using my laptop, so it doesn’t normally sit there. However, When I’m finished using it for the night, It sits right there. My emoji pillows stay there full time, except I use the smiling one whenever I’m too lazy to fluff my regular bed pillow.
Definitely the most boring part of my room. My tank top rack that holds everything, my jewelry chest, and my garbage that ?I need to take out. Oopsies. Also, my flag from color guard is in the wrong corner... I’ll have to fix that.
Recognize this bad boy? It’s my Daily-Do’s from yesterday! I hung it up where I see it every time I walk out my door to guilt trip me into actually following it. Hopefully it works.
Now this corner is probably the most interesting of all my corners. It’s what I like to call the talent/hobby corner.
To begin in this fabulous corner, I have my book shelf. Freshly dusted and slightly reorganized since I’m reading a book from the middle shelf and I keep forgetting to return I’ll Give You the Sun to my friend who let me borrow it in the first place. As you can see, I have a very large variety of books: everything from cutesy romance to hard core action novels to the complete works of Edgar Allen Poe and William Shakespeare. And my movie selection is just strange, not about to lie. But this is just another little insight into who I am. It might be weird, but so am I.
Humble brag time. These are the hobbies I’ve kept with up until this point. So lets just list everything off before I tell stories. I’ve got my nail polish, knitting bag (pink bag under polish), ukulele, guitar, trombone, camera tripod, camera and extra camera bag, work shirts (oopsies), and yoga mat. Hidden beneath my camera are pictures I’ve taken and framed.
I took up knitting in fourth grade because I wanted to be better than this really annoying girl in my grade. Needless to say, I really enjoyed it.
Music is one of my passions. It moves me unlike anything else in this world and I couldn’t imagine living my life without it. I play a total of eight instruments and I used to be in choir, so nine if you count that. I picked up guitar the summer before my junior year, dedicated to learning a new instrument that would challenge me. And let me tell you, it really has. I’m impressed with myself for taking the time and putting in the work to learn it. Ukulele I picked up my senior year as a little passion project. It was extremely easy to learn in comparison to guitar and I really enjoy playing a cute little melody on it when given the chance. Trombone came into my life by accident, really. Jazz Two needed a bass trombone and I volunteered to play, praying I could fill the shoes I needed to properly. And honestly, I did. I went above and beyond, outplaying Jazz One’s bass trombonist (who’d been playing for three years) in just six months. I’ve been truly blessed with my musical ability. If I stayed dedicated and had the true drive for it, I don’t doubt I could go on to be a professional musician and make a life for myself playing music all the time. Anyway, jazz music is my favorite form of live music, and it’s my favorite to play as well. So in college I’m picking up the old horn and going back at it. I’m excited.
Moving onwards, photography is my life’s passion. There’s just something to be said about being able to adequately capture a moment in time forever. Photography does what words cannot do alone, which is ironic because they’re both two things I absolutely love. If you guys want, we could set up a little thing on like Wednesdays where we share some of our writings or just little phrases we made up that we really like! I think it’d be fun.
Last stop in the talent corner, my yoga mat. I started doing yoga when I was a competitive swimmer because it helped my body relax and destress after a week of long, exhausting practices. It and meditation have stayed in my life as little destressing things I do to relax and stay in touch with myself.
So yeah! That’s my talent corner!
Since I finished hanging my lights in my room, my chair’s corner is really chill and it just gives off this really warm, happy vibe. I finally feel like my room amplifies who I am.
And to round out this tour, here’s a panorama of my room with the lights off. It isn’t perfect, but it’s perfect enough for me. After years of not having a full space dedicated to me and my personality, it feels amazing to finally claim ever inch of the space.
I hope you guys have enjoyed this tour! It was fun to walk through my room and share stories and fun facts about me and my life! If you’ve got any questions or want to see more cool things like this, let me know and we can definitely make it happen! Thank you guys for joining me and I hope you have an amazing night/day!
I’ve been lazy with these things bc life but I decided to put my effort into them again because I miss being active on tumblr. So, hey, what’s up? Also hey this is hella late :’D
I was tagged by @mongoose-bite. Thank you cruncharoo :3
Always post the rules. Answer the questions asked, then write 11 new ones. Tag 11 people to answer your questions, as well as the person who tagged you.
--
1. You can (safely) visit another planet in our solar system. Which one and why?
Uhm, I... don’t know which one I’d visit tbh. A planet that can sustain human life? Maybe take a couple of friends with me and we could chill there to get away from bullshit? That’s a nice thought :’D
2. What are you looking forward to?
Well, currently? The weekly updates of Yuri on Ice because it’s kind of become my grounding. It’s got me hyped. Also I’m looking forward to ... some kpop stuff XD one of my favourite groups is promoting right now so they’re on a lot of variety shows and they have a lot of performances which are great to watch.
3. What do you dance to when no one is watching?
Upbeat, hard bass, body-rolling type of music. I usually dance in the mirror or around the apartment when no one is home. ... I just really hope none of my neighbours decided to window watch bc my dancing is anything but graceful haha :D If you want specific songs rn? Mostly kpop songs, Also Uptown Funk bc ofc. Uhhh also ABBA songs sometimes... and the PotC soundtrack :’D
4. What’s something about where you live that only a local would know?
Hrm. Idk I guess that we have a festival of culture (kind of, it’s actually hard to explain what it is) every year where people can go to artist corners and japanese workshops and i remember there being a kendo lesson one time and there’s also mini concerts and food stalls and ye it’s nice.
5. How’s that thing you’re working on going?
UHHHHHHHH y dis? ;o; it’s going very slowly and painfully. The WIP I’m currently working on doesn’t seem to be going anywhere but I’m trying to push on. I’ll make it work. It’s been ages since I’ve posted anything and it’s making me feel restless so I need to somehow break this endless circle of non-productivity :’D wish me luck haha
6. Have you ever had a food that you ate some much of you put yourself off it forever?
YES. Potatoes. I honestly do not like potatoes all too much because when I was a kid my grandpa liked to overfeed me with them so I just never really got over that. Now I occasionally eat mashed potatoes and very very rarely fries (from mcdonalds where they basically don’t even taste like potatoes but more like salt >.>) but not any other kind of potatoes. I just don’t like them at all. Rice is the bae for me.
7. What’s on your bedroom walls?
My guitar and four photo frames: a picture of smol me, a drawing I drew of Elsa, a grafitti painting I bought one time at the seaside of a horse in the moonlight (it’s very pretty), and a painting I did myself of my grandparents’ last puppy and kitty (I miss them). That’s basically it. Used to be posters, but, :’D
8. What do you wish had a fandom (or a bigger fandom)?
Huh, I dunno, I used to wish fandoms for anime I had just finished watching, but at the moment I feel like I’m mostly covered. So, yeah, currently nothing, but that’s liable to change :’D
9. What fictional organisation would you most want to work for?
To be honest, the only organisation I’d be willing to work in is any post-voldemort Wizarding organisation. Like, idk, maybe somewhere in the Ministry of Magic, or maybe at Hogwarts? If you can even count that as an organization? Dunno. But yes. I’d love to be able to do magic and work in a field for it!
10. Favourite pasta dish?
Spaghetti Bolognese :’D It’s a guilty pleasure.
11. What’s a trope guaranteed to make you love a character?
I’m trash for the most weird things tbh? And it doesn’t even make sense? Like, sometimes I love the asshole character(tm) but sometimes I don’t want to see a character like that at all. Sometimes I love the sunshine chars, sometimes I want that heavily tattooed char with a heart of gold, sometimes I want to see that grumpy char, etc. Idk. I just like well-written flawed-yet-still-lovable chars for the most part. IDK. I have weird preferences.
QUESTIONS:
1. What do you do when you can’t sleep?
2. What show/anime/movie/book etc. made you finally fall into the deep hole that is fandom?
3. What makes you hyped up and get things done?
4. What are some of your favourite singers/bands/groups?
5. What is your current show/anime/book etc. (choose one or many) that you’re watching/reading?
6. If you could give a hug to someone fictional, who would it be and why?
7. What is your favourite junk food/dessert?
8. What is your favourite thing of the town you live in?
9. That one song you always jam to?
10. Do you have that one trope you just can’t stop reading? If yes, which one is it?
11. If you were given a chance to master one language in a day, which one would it be and why?
I tag: @perksofbeingawaifu @erenbaegerr @monsoondownpour @pureren @raindrop-rouge @sugarplum-senpai @bfketh @ryukoishida @onewhositswiththeturtles @titanteeth @xenophonspeaks and anyone else that wants to do it ^^
Recommended Listening February 2018
dearest all,
i hope you're weathering the weather. it's certainly weathering me. here's hoping we weather together.
as always i have some concerts coming up (2 concerts by my band double double!!) and some other (not me) music recs for those who may be interested.
first, i've been more or less obsessed with the following (most of which haven't even been released yet).
Wadada Leo Smith America's National Parks ::
whyyyyyy Wadada why are you so good?? my favorite trumpet sound in the world and one of my most favorite approaches to organizing sound compositionally and also such a brilliant bringer-together of the most perfect artists for the music. this album is often deceptively stark while still grooving like crazy and setting off a "grandpa on the roof with a pvc pipe" type of fireworks display in my chest and guts.
also, Cuneiform, the label that released this album 18 months ago has announced that they won't be putting out any new music in 2018. because nobody is buying stuff. LET'S FIX THAT SHALL WE.
Jean Rohe ::
Jean's pledgemusic campaign is wrapping up (like in the next couple hours) and i can't believe i didn't send this message earlier. click the link to go preorder her record. i'm on it. but honestly who cares? Jean is just the greatest. and that's enough. unbelievable voice, incomparable storyteller, clever and funky and deeply moving songwriter. all this adds up to 100 as far as i'm concerned. BUT WAIT there's more. her commitment to social justice and the spread of joy and love and understanding is central to her music and her life ... i cry at literally every one of her concerts. click the link. buy the thing.
Subtle Degrees A Dance That Empties ::
i've spent a lot of time with Travis Laplante over the past few years. he's tireless in his pursuit of healing the world both through music and ancient eastern healing practices. i guess he decided he didn't have quite enough going on so he composed and learned to play the single most insane and impossibly moving and impossibly difficult piece of saxophone music i've ever heard anyone even attempt. this record comes out February 23 and features Travis duo with Gerald Cleaver, who is the best drummer. just the best. sweet christ. get this in your life immediately.
their record release show is at Union Pool on March 4. cancel everything. go to it. NOT JOKING.
Erica Eso 129 Dreamless GMG ::
Weston Minissali and company have been doing this for a couple years and it's crystalized into the most awesome groovy gliss-synth un-pop-rock. their new record comes out on NNA Tapes on March 16 (clicky above) and their teaser track Gun-metal Grey makes me feel like i'm dancing with Sade in a lucid fever dream. they're touring, too. clickety click click.
OH HEY I HAVE SOME GIGS THEY WILL BE SO SO GREAT PLEASE COME.
///////
Wednesday, February 7
9pm
Gay Witch Séance
at Otto's Shrunken Head
538 East 14th Street. NYC.
our dear pals Charlotte Moroz and Leigh Walter have been organizing i-don't-know-whats at Otto's once a month for the past little while and it's always different and these women are brilliant and hilarious and so totally awesome that whatever they touch will be great. so i'm especially pleased that they asked me to be a part of the (friggin LARGE) drone ensemble and also to perform a very miniature solo thing.
certain other rites of healing passage will take place including tarot, palm reading, and (to be administered by Jamie Agnello) consensual hand-holding.
click. come. https://www.facebook.com/events/181799469103560/
INTERVIEW: BLUE MEAN EYES
To celebrate the release of their ace debut EP, Through The Mill, B-Side’s Seymour Quigley caught up with Lauren Bradford and Toby Powell of Bury St Edmunds-based alt-rock four piece Blue Mean Eyes, shortly before teatime.
B-SIDE: Hello, Lauren. Hello, Toby. How are you this fine afternoon?
LAUREN (vocals, bass): I’m very good thank you, keeping busy, yourself?
TOBY (guitar): I’m very well thank you, had a busy one playing around with some new ideas, how're you doing?
B-SIDE: I’m very well too. In fact, I've just got back from Peppa Pig World. Have you ever been? If you're looking for a place to have the best band photoshoot ever, I highly recommend it.
TOBY: Peppa Pig World? Where has this safe haven been hiding all this time? I've never been, but we'll definitely think about chasing that up. Also to get Peppa Pig Merch.
LAUREN: Definitely have to give it a visit, totally just for the photoshoot though...
B-SIDE: At risk of drifting into unwarranted hyperbole, you really can't beat it. Grandpa Pig's Boat Ride is the very definition of ridin' dirty.
TOBY: If Grandpa Pig was here he'd be thrilled. Tickets will be being purchased soon, trust me!
B-SIDE: Grandpa Pig is ALWAYS watching. Now, as you're probably aware, you've got a new EP out. For a band who've been gigging for less than a year, it sounds very assured. How quickly did things fall into place when you started playing together?
TOBY: Yeah, super duper excited about the idea of that! Just the fact we have an EP is craziness to me. Things fells into place for us very slowly but surely, piece by piece. We started out as just a couple mates - me, Ben (Saunders, guitar) and Ell (Rodger Brown, drums) jamming out some tunes that we thought could've worked. Then Lauren came along and things skyrocketed almost instantly and before we knew it, we had a few songs which we were happy with.
B-SIDE: It does feel as though each time I see you play you get tighter and stronger, like magical sock elastic. Was there ever a grand master plan, any particular artists you really aspired to be like? Or was it just a case of getting in a room together and seeing what happened?
TOBY: It's really a weird and wonderful combination of all of our accumulated tastes: Ben is a lover of all things indie, soft sounds and ambience - Mac Demarco, Whitest Boy Alive, Oasis and Liam Gallagher; Elliott pretty much loves absolutely every genre of music under the sun, I have honestly never seen someone so loving and appreciative of all kinds of music in my life. I'm am a MASSIVE ÜBER SUPERFAN of Biffy Clyro - heavy distorted guitars, stabs, ledge-cutting guitar riffs - and the three things just combine in an almost seamless intertwining of all of our influences combined.
LAUREN: Yeah, I think we all have our own individual inspirations. I personally listen to a lot of female fronted bands, mainly an Australian band called Tonight Alive for inspiration in melodies and lyrics
B-SIDE: So with all these influences, how do the songs come about? Is there a main songwriter or do you take a collaborative approach?
TOBY: The way we approach writing songs has evolved since we first formed. In the beginning, we each came up with our own ideas and brought them to rehearsals to run by the others and come up with different parts etc, but now we tend to get together with just the instruments, no vocals, and record everything structurally as it would be with lyrics. From that point the writing of the lyrics and coming up with melodies is down to Lauren, for which she seems to come up with almost instantly, which is brilliant. It's a very strange way of doing it, but it's a way which has always suited us and worked out!
B-SIDE: There seem to be a recurring theme in the lyrics across the EP, with a lot of allusions to the restlessness borne of frustration that a lot of people feel growing up in places like East Anglia; although, perhaps oddly, very few lyrics by local artists really touch on it, certainly not quite so affectingly. Lauren, do you ever consciously approach specific themes in your lyrics, or is it an unconscious process for you?
LAUREN: Yeah, I guess I do (approach themes consciously). Most of the earlier songs were written by both me and Toby together, and with those we just sort of came up with a title and tried to tell a story with that, and it just turned out being about random stuff! The ones I write myself now, just spout from whatever emotion I'm feeling at the time, so for instance I'll jot down what's making me angry or frustrated, and then turn it into a poem type thing and then fit it into a melody. With the new songs me and Toby are working on at the moment, I'm taking a lot of inspiration from what's happening on TV around the world, just to try something different and see what kind of an impact it has on our audience.
B-SIDE: There are a couple of fascinating titles on the EP, which pose important questions. Firstly, what is the Brixton Shrug? I've googled it and found no results, so I presume it's something you made up. I won't lie, I'm desperately hoping it's the long-overdue British answer to the Harlem Shuffle.
TOBY: Brixton Shrug I suppose is more of a metaphor for guys and gals that like to party, have fun, shrugging off the negative aspects of whatever's going on in everyone's lives and just enjoying the moment, like a “shrug” to life itself. The actual way it came about however is totally different: Elliott was wearing a 'Brixton' clothing brand, and I said to Ben “Ben mate, we still need a song name,” and he just shrugged. The Brixton Shrug was then born, in that simple moment - maybe there's a dance move in it somewhere, we'll have an experiment and surprise you.
B-SIDE: I now feel duty-bound to invent a suitable dance for the song, which I will of course be claiming as my own intellectual property so I can drown in the inevitable riches. There's also a song called Meteor Shrimp - is that a real creature? I've trawled the lyrics for coded warnings about an unseen extra-terrestrial aquatic threat to mankind, but if they're there, I've missed them.
TOBY: Meteor Shrimp is actually a ghastly deep sea monster ready to emerge at any given point in a fantastic sequel remake of Godzilla 2 featuring Ben Brown from SuperGlu as the Shrimp... this is the whole truth, I promise. Meteor Shrimp was actually a name devised from a weird combination of words which we'd never heard before, because we really wanted it to stick in people's heads. The song itself is about someone who is meticulously lazy and always putting off tasks which have to be done to move up the industry ladder. It's a listen-and-learn kind of song, up for people's individual interpretations!
B-SIDE: Thanks for clearing that up, although of course now we're now duty bound have to make the "Ben Brown from SuperGlu as planet-saving Shrimp" movie happen, because that would ACTUALLY BE AMAZING. Finally, what's next for Blue Mean Eyes? Do you have any gigs, future releases or miscellaneous announcements you'd like to share?
LAUREN: Well, this debut EP is now up on Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, Deezer and Groove Music for everyone to listen to on the go on their cellular devices. Our next gig as the original Blue Mean Eyes four-piece (following the recent departure of bassist Harvey Baldwin) with Ben on guitar, Toby on guitar and vocals, Ell banging the ol’ drums, and myself on bass and vocals, will be at the Washing Machine event on the 16th of September in support of A Horse Called War, which we are all very much looking forward to. We are also writing a bunch of new material to be recorded and shared with you on our first full-length album to be released within the early months of 2018. Hopefully from listening to the EP it will give you an idea as to what we are setting out to achieve as band with our music.
TOBY: My goal for the foreseeable future is raising enough money to make a film directed by Steven Spielberg casting only Ben Brown from SuperGlu as all of the main characters and extras... please donate generously at www.BenToBecomeTheShrimpVSGodzilla.com And Ben, if you happen to be reading this, it WILL happen. The time. Is. Coming.
In early October Sesu, Aidan and I went into the studio to record 3 songs for special projects. For the first time we had Aidan focus exclusively on electric guitar and Sesu on the drum kit in addition to the Ashiko. The result was much more rock than you are used to hearing from us but that was entirely appropriate given what we were recording.
Recording sesson: October 3, 2016
Up first was a cover of the Rolling Stones’ Dead Flowers which is slated for inclusion on the Whiplash Records tribute to the Stones.I told Aidan to “think Mick Taylor.” He accomplished it. After you hear the track sit back and remember that he is 14 as we are doing this. What a kick it was having Sesu playing a kit. He sounded so good in the earphones that I had to look over and was a bit awestruck by the historical figure I was playing next to. Really, it’s a joy to play with those 2 musicians.
As is generally our practice in the studio we do the basic track live. This time it was Aidan’s electric rhythm guitar, Sesu on the kit and my vocals and acoustic guitar. Aidan then recorded his leads and fills and added the bass. His leads are complete takes! Sesu then recorded an Ashiko track and I put on a second unison vocal and that was it. I like the energy that we achieved. I like the propulsive power of Sesu’s drumming. I like the fills and the leads. Overall, I’m just really happy with this recording.
Dead Flowers will be on a Whiplash Records compilation that is coming out in late January or early February 2017. I’m really looking forward to this one. I can imagine that the Stones are a sweet spot for a lot of the bands on this compilation. With roots that go back to the early CBGBs era of NYC and the New York Dolls (original guitarist Rick Rivets plays on all these compilations) it’s a natural. We are already on the Whiplash compilation of The Who and this one has me even more excited (and that’s a good one).
Next up, was an up-tempo version of the Grateful Dead’s Friend of the Devil. This was released on this year’s Whiplash Halloween IV. Each time we are included on these compilations it is really an honor. The music on this one is really outstanding! It doesn’t have to be Halloween for you to enjoy it so get a jump on next year’s Halloween party and get it now!! I had the same kind of experience with this track as Dead Flowers and again really ended up liking the energy in this recording. Aidan plays two really good solos. He’s really got a feel for how to introduce himself and make a statement and these too are complete takes. I’ve been playing Friend of the Devil and Dead Flowers for many years and with this band for a while too. It makes things easy when we have that much history behind a performance.
For many reasons, The Grateful Dead are a significant source for me not the least of which is that I consider them the ultimate group of modern songsters. In traditional terms a songster is someone who travelled around collecting songs to add to their repertoire and spreading them around by playing. They might be playing at a dance or on a street corner or in a bar or a juke joint but the point was the songs were getting passed around in ways that sheet music or later recordings didn’t. It’s the oral tradition really. The Dead, of course, recorded almost everything that they did so there is a new element to their work and its distribution. The point is, they were collectors. You will hear traditional blues, Chicago blues, old time string band, early country, Irish, New Orleans funk, traditional tunes from the Bahamas and a whole lot more. Jerry Garcia was a student of these musics but it wasn’t just him. The whole band was like this (Weir is no slouch). So it has always been important to me to play some songs that they collected and passed on in addition to the originals. We started with the Hunter/Garcia, Friend of the Devil in which I include the final verse that Hunter wrote but Garcia never sang. To me it finishes the story, so I include it. You can expect more of their traditional tunes from us in the future. I’ve Been All Around This World (1944: Grandpa Jones) is in our set list. Deep Elum Blues (1930s: The Georgia Black Bottom,Lone Star Cowboys and The Shelton Brothers) is a likely candidate. We’ve been playing it at jam sessions recently (Here are Aidan and I doing it at home 2016 This was recorded moments after I took my new $69 uke out of the box. He’s playing a $40 acoustic he bought in the Wisconsin Dells a year ago. So that’s a grand total of $109 for the instruments in this video! Not bad.). Anyway, I think Sesu suggested that Friend of the Devil would make a good addition to the 2016 Whiplash Halloween compilation. It is!
Finally, my friend Ursula Bielski, at the urging of our friend Clarence Goodman, offered to include a song on her upcoming compilation CD for Chicago Hauntings. Ursula owns the tour company and is THE expert on Chicago ghostlore. She’ll be playing this on the tour buses so lots of people will get to hear it.
I told Aidan and Sesu that I wanted a slow and swampy version of Friend of the Devil for this one and off we went with no real rehearsal. I really like how it came out. I’ve played if for some people and have gotten a great response. We play it pretty slow and spooky but not slow like the later day Grateful Dead arrangements. You should be hearing it in the coming year! We’ll pass on more information as we get it. If you find yourself in Chicago look up Chicago Hauntings and go on a tour! You’ll be glad you did.
We didn’t do a Christmas song this year but we have one ready for next year and Another Pint already has one recorded for next year! Meanwhile Whiplash included Black Diamond Strings from our first album on the 2016 Christmas collection – A Whiplash Christmas IV – as a special gift. We are really happy about that! Again, Christmas might be over this year but get this now so you are ready for next year!
Fall 2016 Holidays In early October Sesu, Aidan and I went into the studio to record 3 songs for special projects.
