Song Of The Day - Jan 18th '23
Detroit or Buffalo - Barbara Keith
I found this song last fall just fucking around on Spotify on a radio for (probably) a Jackson C Frank song. I instantly fell in love with it (I'm a slut for obscure 60's/70's folk artists with only one album). There's a certain kind of melancholy I look for in songs; a yearning, a truthfulness in lyrics that can only come from the deepest darkest part of the soul. Compared to the many, many songs out there, very few have that pure honesty. This one has it.
Keith's voice is soothing and hopeful, yet reflective of the solitude of an outcast. She has resigned to a life on the road, the lonesome life of a rambler. She has a friends and family in her hometown, but she knows that truly, there is nothing left for her there. Her lyrics are are evident of someone who has resolved to find a better life for themselves but knows that they will miss where they've come from. There is a comfort at home, memories soaked into the walls, but as Keith sings in the song "God knows, everybody gotta go sometime"
I spent all of highschool trying to get to college. I knew one day I would find my place in the world, and I would find my people in college. Now I'm here, I've found my people and I couldn't be happier. My homelife isn't exactly rough, but it isn't pretty. Over Christmas break, I realized that there was nothing left for me in my hometown. I had outgrown most of my highschool friends, my beliefs had changed too much for me to relate to them. The ones I did want to spend time with had all moved away, spending only a few days with their families before going back to their college towns. I was stuck in my childhood home with people I hated just wasting my days away until I could go back to campus. There is nothing left for me at home, and even though I love my dad and my brother, I have to pack up and go, Detroit or Buffalo.

Ray Kowalski's parents Damian and Barbara Kowalski, for @ds30below character week!
I collected some pictures from the actors' younger years, so we can imagine what Ray's family looked like when he was growing up. Clare Coulter's black-and-white pictures are from 1977 and the color ones are from the movie By Design (1981, available on YouTube). Dan MacDonald's pictures are from the television series Strange Paradise (1969-1970, available on YT) and from the movie The Neptune Factor (1973, available on YT). Dan MacDonald died last year, age 89. Clare Coulter, 82, is still acting.
I like to think Ray's parents were both born circa 1938, so they'd have been in their early twenties when Ray was born, and 86ish today (if fic writers let them live!).
And then, of course, here's their boy, from teen to 21.

According to the official Due South website, Ray has an "extremely succesful brother". I'm glad that's all we ever heard of him in any official context.

Strange Darling's soundtrack is available on vinyl for $35 via Mutant. Z Berg, former vocalist of the indie rock band The Like, wrote and performed a collection of acoustic ballads for the film.
A cover of "Love Hurts" featuring Keith Carradine (streaming below) is included. The album is pressed on 140-gram splatter vinyl, limited to 500. It's estimated to ship on November 30.

"We just got hold of Charlie one night and said, ‘That's it, you're in, you're doing it,’ Stewart says.
Aside from his musical proficiency, Watts was wanted because he shared a similar sense of humor with Richards. Stewart saw this as a tremendous asset.
"With Charlie we were thinking about the atmosphere in the band. In the carly days I thought Keith might be an awkward person to get to know," Stewart says. "I’d watch Keith with other people, and he always seemed to back away a bit. But he and Charlie were a fuckin' comedy team. They had a dual sense of humor."
Jagger agrees that the addition of Watts greatly added to the camaraderie within the band.
"We had the advantage that Keith and I both get along very well with Charlie. The fact that there's three of us who get along so well," Jagger stresses, "is very important."
In addition to Watts's easygoing temperament, Jagger was equally amused and impressed with his jazzier image.
"We all thought Charlie was very kind of hip because he had jackets and shirts," Jagger laughs. "Because he was working in an advertising agency, he was very different. It was good for the band to have someone who was sort of sharp. And we were glad he had experiences with jazz people."

“One night she rings Paris depressed. After talking for a while they end the conversation. Minutes later the phone rings again. A mutual friend from New York is on the phone. "I can't understand why Anita won't come to my party,' he tells Keith. 'Maybe she just wants a friend to talk to,' Richards succinctly says. Later that evening at the studio Anita calls. She rarely rings Keith, especially in the studio, Ironically, he is singing a tune he'd just written entitled ‘I Can't Help It But I Love You So Much' backed by an addictive riff. In the middle of a take Keith is told about the telephone call and is delighted. Un-strapping his guitar, he goes to the phone singing "Ah-A-ni-ta.”
