23/12/23

The bots that I am creating will have invasive plants such as ivy and moss growing on them so and I dint know how the plants will stay attached to the bots, so I have decided to research types of sea creatures and plants that can attach themselves to man made objects.
Limpets - Limpets are a type of of highly invasive snail that are often found clamped to rocks or the underside of a ship and are very difficult to get off. Limpets are held on by a large muscular tongue, this tongue is known as the worlds strongest known biological structure. A limpets shell is designed to have a low profile that will protect it from fast and violent waves that are constantly crashing onto them.
Barnacles - How do barnacles stick to the undersides of vessels, to other sea life, to each other, and to pretty much anything they come in contact with? They secrete a fast-curing cement that is among the most powerful natural glues known, with a tensile strength of 5,000 pounds per square inch and an adhesive strength of 22-60 pounds per square inch. The glue is so strong that researchers are trying to figure out how it can be used commercially.
English ivy - It attaches itself to supports by producing aerial roots along the stems. When the stems are pulled away from the wall, they often leave behind the unsightly root ends, that persist and can often only be removed with wire brushes or pressure washing.

Barnacles On Top of Barnacles
Barnacles On Top of Barnacles
Thatched barnacles, Semibalanus cariosus, and goose barnacles, Pollicipes polymerus. There are plenty of impacts in the surf zone, and barnacles sometimes break away from their rocky homes and wash up on the beaches. These thatched barnacles, Semibalanus cariosus, the ones piled one upon the other, are among the most common barnacle finds along the wrack line. Here, you can see at least three…

Adult Balanus barnacles settle on surfaces of spacecraft, reaching areas other plankton have not. However many are unable to contact appropriate surfaces to settle, and keep drifting across their whole lifespan in the larval stage (Nauplius).

Taken 2022 22nd January, ever heard the story 'The Ugly Barnacle'? Well I hope you heard of 'Balanus balanus'. These barnacles reside in the Arctic Ocean and the northern seas near it. They start their lives as free-swimming larva among zooplankton before cementing themselves on a surface their cement glands can bind to. They then live out their lives breeding as hermaphrodites and filter-feed using their legs. #animal #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #fauna #naturalhistory #naturhistoriska #preservedspecimen #arthropods #arthropod #kräftdjur #crustacean #crustaceans #barnacles #barnacle #acornbarnacle #acornbarnacles #havstulpaner #havstulpan #animalia #arthropoda #crustacea #thecostraca #balanomorpha #balanidae #balanus #balanusbalanus (at Evolutionsmuseet) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZN5kALqV1y/?utm_medium=tumblr
