“are you going to talk to me” + aupril fools
badzone timeline where they stay in the trench you know how it is
Nearly a season in the Trench and they’re still having nightmares. Not every night, mind you, but still frequently enough that they’re waking up sweat-drenched and breathing ragged more often than they should. Quill had nightmares about the eclipses before they died - who didn’t - but those dreams seem tame now that they understand the feeling of flames licking eagerly at their skin, of smoke filling their lungs and the acrid smell of burnt hair.
Not sleeping doesn’t work for them. Quill’s given it up, preferring ill-rested to bone-deep exhausted, knowing that lying in bed next to Edric feels better when they’re not staring at a wall for hours. And they’ve gotten good at startling awake without startling him awake, carefully unwinding themself from Edric’s arms and the bedsheets to sit anywhere else until their hands stop shaking and their breathing is under control.
They think they’re good at it, at least. It doesn’t occur to Quill that maybe Edric is just trying to give them space until they try to get out of bed one night and his hand catches them by the wrist.
“Are we ever gonna talk about this?” he asks, voice hoarse with sleep.
It’s too dark here to read Edric’s expression, or to put on a convincing face of their own. Quill settles for relaxing into his grip and settling back into the bed. They shift to keep their shoulders from arching back into his chest, curling away from Edric but keeping his hand, lacing their fingers with his almost compulsively.
“I don’t want to make it your problem,” they say, as carefully as they can.
“Your problems are my problems,” Edric mutters. “I told you I’d watch your back.”
“I didn’t think that was about me,” Quill says quietly. Maybe it would have been, if Edric had said it later. If it hadn’t been the first night they’d met.
Edric lets out a breath, and they feel it against the nape of their neck, warm. “It’s about you now.”
“Okay.” They’re too tired to modulate their voice - it comes out flat and exhausted, despite best efforts. Quill closes their eyes and leans their face into the pillow, ignoring their heart still pounding with leftover adrenaline in their chest.
“You don’t have to run and hide when you’re upset,” Edric says.
“Okay,” Quill says again. They pull his arm tighter around them, looking for comfort they can burrow into, not sure if they’ll know it when they find it. “I won’t.”

Some tasty tidbits I picked up from today’s Warhammer Live stream, talking about the book...
Allying with a guild provides your gang with some passive rule bonuses depending on the guild.
In a campaign, your guild can force you into a specific scenario... unless you want to risk double crossing them.
The guilds have stats for fighter retinues that CAN fight alongside your gang! adding a TON of variety to existing gangs
Yes you and your opponent can be allied with the same guild, representing competing internal guild squabbles.
New rules that make bounty hunters more likely to stick around and making you more of those sweet sweet credits.
Venators: they made a few tweaks to the white dwarf version basically, *mostly* very similar
Bad Zones: playing in a bad zone itself adds a layer of dangerous special rules to a whole table. The whole floor might be a conveyor belt, there could be carnivorous plants, or even chaos taint!. Example: Sump Sea is a zone where the whole "ground level" is a flooded pit of toxic sludge that is very very bad to fall into. ~perfect for the Gen Con table section I had planned for it
Bad Zone Events can be used on any table (even non-bad zones), allowing ways for a bad-zone to leak into wherever you are currently playing. Others can be falling debris from above, locals shooting at you from off-map, etc. seems fun! You can even end up with brainleaf zombies.
Terrain rules bucket: They took all of the Games Workshop terrain they had floating around, and made a bunch of optional special rules for all of it. "inert" for if its just terrain, "active" for if its still in working order, and something in-between when it turns on and off randomly. All kinds of madness here!
Bad Zone *Scenarios*: there are 5 of them, and they'll be playing one of them live in about 10 minutes.
Bad Zone trading post: some new ammo types, new armor option, some new accessories, you can buy a pet giant rat!

crime au jaylen and derrick djdjfnkfkfmf
badzone timeline where the alternates don’t switch back. sorry this isnt crime derrick actually
Jaylen doesn’t knock before entering Derrick’s room. Doesn’t see the point, really; she knows exactly what she’ll find inside, and it’s the same as she’s found the last five times she’s come in without announcing herself: Derrick laying facedown in bed feigning sleep or Derrick sitting crosslegged on the bed staring blankly at the wall or Derrick pacing the small space endlessly. Always silent and alone.
“I’m gonna explore the swamp,” she says, leaning against the wall next to the doorway. Doesn’t bother with greetings, no how are you, because the answer’s stuck in hell, same as you, and neither of them are itching to talk about that. “You’re coming with me.”
His face is still halfway buried in the pillow, but he cracks open one eye, looks at her in silence for a second. “Why?” His voice has been getting more and more laced with static over the past few weeks; she takes note of the way he winces after speaking, like a sore throat brings regret. It sounds like it hurts.
“Oh, plenty of reasons. Tiana keeps harping on about the buddy system. Everyone else here falls into one of two categories: boring sports assholes, or people who want to kill me. Not gonna ask Tosser to go to a secluded location with me, you know? Neither of us would come back from that one alive.” She reconsiders her words, grimacing. “Well. For a given definition of alive. You know what I mean.”
Company isn’t easy to come by, here. Of those who knew her before this, Tosser almost certainly still wants to kill her, and Luis is apparently capable of setting people on fire, which serves as a pretty strong deterrent from hanging out with them. Most people — the ones who were here before whatever’d brought Jaylen — remember her as someone else, something slightly to the left. She’s found no real trace of the other-Jaylen’s personality. While Krueger’s got a room full of objects to look at, letters found folded neatly in drawers and sheet music spread around, Jaylen’s room is entirely bare, dusty like it’s never been used at all.
If you’d told Jaylen a month ago that her only friend in hell would be Derrick Krueger, she would’ve slit your throat. But this isn’t the Derrick she’d known, either. And Jaylen’s never done well with being alone.
“Sure.” He turns towards her, blankets tangling up around him. Progress, she thinks.
“And you need to get out of here.”
“Got out of here once already,” he says. Moving past monosyllabic answers, which, again, is progress, even if she’s poking at old wounds by mistake. “Didn’t stick. Obviously.”
“Not what I meant, Krueger.” Jaylen pushes off the wall, moves to the bed and sits down in the narrow space Derrick’s legs aren’t occupying. “Fresh air. It’ll do you good.”
He doesn’t move. He doesn’t reply.
“Heard there’s a Best Buy out there. And a lake. Maybe more shit, I don’t know. You can’t just mope in here forever.”
“Are you going to leave?” The question’s pretty much deadpan. He’s got his eyes closed again, an arm draped over them, like it’ll be enough to convince Jaylen he’s sleeping.
She didn’t get where she is by giving up easily. “Not a fuckin’ chance,” she says. “Give me fifteen minutes. Then you can go back to lying around in the dark doing whatever the fuck you do here all day. You might be used to how boring it is here, but I’m not, and it’s this or going to kill Tosser again.”
He squints at her. “Ten minutes.”
“Cruel of you,” she says, though she’s standing up and offering a hand to help him up, and he’s taking it, and she’s smiling even as he scowls. “Thought I was supposed to be the relentless criminal here. I’m already wasting away, you could at least give me the bare minimum of social interaction.”
“Are you ever any less dramatic,” he groans.
“Absolutely not.” Jaylen tugs him by the arm towards the door; she feels like she’s leading a blindfolded hostage around, like if she loses contact he’ll bolt and return to the relative comfort of his room, so she keeps a tight grip on the sleeve of his sweatshirt and doesn’t give him the chance. “Let’s see if we can’t find some fucked up swamp monsters to cure your agonies.”

I’ve just read the whc post about the new Orlocks and it’s actually got me mightily concerned about how expensive the new Necromunda is going to be:
“The Orlocks will be released alongside Gang War 2; the second instalment in the Gang War series. For starters, this will contain the rules for founding and playing with your Orlock gang as well as their various new weapons and gadgets, hiring the aforementioned Hive Scum, as well as a wealth of other content to suit any Necromunda player, like using the new Badzone Delta gaming tiles.”
So I assume this means that each house release will accompany a new gang war supplement. Assuming we are talking about just the classic houses, that means books to buy for Delaque, Orlock, Van Saar and Cawdor. Presumably amongst that will be rules for Bounty Hunters, Wyrds, Scum and other hired guns. It does mean at least another 40 quid in books to get the rules that were core in the last box release and that’s assuming you don’t need the cards to have those tactics / rules too. This is before you’ve even considered Outlanders, which could amount to the same again, and any new factions they might want to add.
I’m very seriously contemplating not opening my boxes because the additional costs for this game are going to spiral massively.

ej derrick + crime jaylen
badzone timeline where nobody re-alternates, once again
It happens overnight - Derrick is capable of joking with her, of deadpanning some snide remark under his breath, and then he’s not. His eyes have a spark in the black depths of them, a predator’s eyes, and then they’re flat like a doll’s. Jaylen finds him barefoot in the hall with all the statues, standing at one of the windows, hand pressed to the glass like he thinks something might press back from the outside.
“Krueger,” she says. Her voice echoes more than she means it to, sharp and clear. “You gonna talk to me?”
Derrick looks over his shoulder. His expression is one Jaylen knows all too well - hunted, an animal about to chew its own leg off to escape a trap.
“Go away,” he says, low and hoarse.
“Not a chance.” Her boot heels click on the marble floor as she steps up next to him. Outside the window is fog and the darkened swamp, terrain Jaylen hasn’t explored yet and doesn’t particularly want to. Maybe that will change, if she’s here any longer. Anything, to get away from most of the lunatics in this place.
“Two deals,” Derrick says. He licks his lips - Jaylen can see they’re cracked and a little bloody, maybe from his fangs nicking them. “I made two deals to stay out of the Trench.”
Jaylen folds her arms over her chest, shifts her weight from one leg to the other. “No such thing as a fair deal.”
“I think this is a nightmare.” Derrick’s fingers curl against the glass, and his words curl through the air like smoke, not quite as distinct as they should be. Fuzzy around the edges. Like a radio signal just slightly out of range. Jaylen doesn’t understand that, but she refuses to let it scare her.
“Weird fuckin’ nightmare to be sharing, then,” she says.
She reaches for his free hand. Isn’t sure why she does it, but follows through anyway, thumb pressed to the backs of his knuckles. Derrick’s skin is as cold as a corpse. Jaylen squeezes, and he squeezes back absently, still staring unseeing out towards the swamp.

This was the table setup for last week’s Necromunda games, and I’ve got to say it was hell using the Unstable Dome badzone here. I had both of my leaders go out of action due to falling lol.
