TWST Horror Movie Headcanons
Summary: It's Halloween, and what better way to celebrate than a horror movie marathon! The only question is, can the Night Raven boys handle it?
Characters: All main NRC students Pairings: None (Rookvil if you squint) CWs: Very brief mentions of horror tropes and subgenres including gore, jumpscares, monsters, murder, torture, insects, aliens, robots, demons, and more.
A/N: Just a fun little thing to celebrate Halloween! If you want to hear more or are curious to know my justifications for the genre choices, feel free to shoot me an ask!
Riddle Rosehearts
Had never seen a horror movie before coming to Night Raven because of his strict and sheltered upbringing
Easily the loudest screamer out of all the boys and the most likely to knock the popcorn bowl onto the floor
Does alright with high-concept thrillers, but can't stomach anything too gory and is extremely sensitive to jumpscares
Favorite subgenre(s): Psychological thriller, gothic horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Splatter films, slasher films
Ace Trappola
Considers himself a casual horror fan, having seen plenty of scary movies at parties and on television thanks to his brother
Talks big game about being unshakable only to tense up at every scare and then try to laugh it off when questioned
Always easily startled for a solid 12 hours afterward and will jump out of his skin if anyone sneaks up behind him
Favorite subgenre(s): Slasher films
Least favorite subgenre(s): Gothic horror
Deuce Spade
Like Ace, has (unwillingly) seen a lot of horror movies at parties, but he used to pretend to like them to seem cool
Doesn't even try to hide the fact that he's scared because he knows it would still be obvious
Also like Ace, becomes extremely jumpy after the fact and has been known to throw punches at people who catch him off-guard
Favorite subgenre(s): Sci-fi horror, post-apocalyptic horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Home invasion films
Cater Diamond
An avid horror fan (despite what people may assume) and always stays up to date on the latest releases
Isn't usually affected by shocking visuals or jumpscares when watching alone, but will overplay his reactions when with a group
Cracks jokes during the most tense parts of the movie in order to keep himself from being haunted by them later
Favorite subgenre(s): Comedy-horror, camp horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Existential horror
Trey Clover
Doesn't really enjoy horror content, but will watch scary movies with other people if invited
Perceived as very stoic and unreactive, but his secret is that he stealthily takes his glasses off when things get too intense
One of the few boys to be relatively unaffected after the fact, if only because he typically never sees the entire movie
Favorite subgenre(s): Psychological thriller
Least favorite subgenre(s): Cannibal horror
Leona Kingscholar
Enjoys horror movies just as much as other movies, which is to say he'll take any excuse to sit in one place for as long as possible
Almost never responds to scares with anything more intense than a flick of his tail and a muttered, "Oh shit."
Teases the guys in his dorm that get freaked out by brushing them with his tail or sneaking up behind them
Favorite subgenre(s): Survival horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Gothic horror, arthouse horror
Ruggie Bucchi
Has mostly seen vintage horror movies because they're easier to find for free online or on television than new releases
Enjoys making fun of the hokey effects and stupid plot points of B movies but is easily caught off-guard by genuine scares
Able to brush off most horror clichés by convincing himself that he is resourceful enough to survive them
Favorite subgenre(s): Camp horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Psychological thriller
Jack Howl
Has been subjected to numerous werewolf movies throughout his life and has far more bad things to say about them than good
Startled by jumpscares involving loud noises, which will cause his ears to fold back and his tail to puff up
The one his friends will run to for protection after watching an especially scary flick due to both his physical and mental strength
Favorite subgenre(s): Natural horror, creature features (not involving werewolves)
Least favorite subgenre(s): Werewolf fiction
Azul Ashengrotto
Fairly squeamish about most types of horror content but would never admit to it
Keeps a flawless poker face throughout the entire runtime of any scary movie despite being internally scared shitless
Always interrogates the Leech twins afterwards about how they would respond were a killer to infiltrate Octavinelle dorm
Favorite subgenre(s): Giallo films
Least favorite subgenre(s): Aquatic horror, cosmic horror
Jade Leech
Finds horror content to be a fascinating way to learn about human culture and its collective fears
Always pays rapt attention to the movie, nodding and saying "Interesting," when something especially gruesome happens
Sometimes he'll bring along a pencil and notepad and pretend to take notes on the killer's methods to fuck with his dormmates
Favorite subgenre(s): Natural horror, cosmic horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Zombie movies
Floyd Leech
Equally as interested in horror as his brother, mostly because he's impressed by all the murder methods humans can come up with
Laughs and claps like an excited child every time someone gets killed or otherwise dismembered on screen
Literally completely unbothered by all manner of violence and has zero issues falling asleep after a scary movie
Favorite subgenre(s): Splatter films, torture films
Least favorite subgenre(s): None (science has yet to discover a trend as to which movies Floyd will dislike)
Kalim Al-Asim
Isn't necessarily a die-hard horror fan, just enjoys having movie nights of all sorts with his friends and dormmates
Will startle at jumpscares but is always delighted to the point of giggling at being caught off-guard
The type to clap and say "That was fun!" as the credits roll while everyone around him sits in horrified silence
Favorite subgenre(s): Comedy-horror, camp horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Apocalyptic horror
Jamil Viper
Mostly indifferent to horror as a genre, will watch it if asked but doesn't really seek it out or avoid it
Isn't affected by most kinds of scares except the ones involving bugs, which will fuck him up irreparably for days
Quick to crack down on any students that try to scare each other after the screening is over, despite secretly finding it amusing
Favorite subgenre(s): Psychological thriller, mythological horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Natural horror (especially when bugs are involved)
Vil Schoenheit
Being in film research club, he doesn't shy away from studying films of any genre, including horror
Will sometimes grip Rook's arm hard enough to bruise during especially tense scenes (Rook doesn't mind)
Able to maintain his composure by commenting on and critiquing the cinematography and special effects
Favorite subgenre(s): Arthouse horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Zombie movies, body horror
Rook Hunt
A general film appreciator, but finds the costuming and SFX makeup used in classic horror movies especially fascinating
Finds something to compliment about every killing, whether it's the acting, the creativity of the murderer's method, or otherwise
Often the unintentional source of scares in the dorm after a horror movie screening due to his naturally stealthy footsteps
Favorite subgenre(s): Found footage, arthouse horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): None (he finds beauté in every film he watches)
Epel Felmier
Initially gets into horror due to it being a "masculine" interest, but eventually comes to appreciate the complexities of the genre
Not easily affected by jumpscares, but when he is, he'll shout at the screen and cuss out whatever made him jump
Better at shaking off the creeping feeling of dread afterwards than most of his friends, or at least pretending like he is
Favorite subgenre(s): Folk horror, mythological horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Backwoods horror
Idia Shroud
Simultaneously a huge horror fan and also a gigantic weenie who is convinced that creatures will manifest in his room at night
Nitpicks the clichés and inaccuracies in science-based horror to the point that it annoys his fellow viewers
Often stays up all night playing video games after watching a scary movie but proceeds to seek out horror content anyway
Favorite subgenre(s): Dark fantasy, sci-fi horror (only the ones about aliens)
Least favorite subgenre(s): Techno-horror
Ortho Shroud
Also a member of film research club and enjoys analyzing movies of all kinds to add to his databases
Doesn't experience fear in the same way other organic beings do, but simulates the typical responses in order to feel included
Likes asking Idia for new gear and upgrades inspired by his favorite horror villain designs (usually the cool robots)
Favorite subgenre(s): Techno-horror, sci-fi horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Slasher films
Malleus Draconia
Mostly desensitized to horror content due to Lilia's fascination with it, but still enjoys the thrill when a film can surprise him
Doesn't typically react to scares, but there has been at least one instance where he has singed the pillow he was holding in shock
Demonic horror films are banned in Diasomnia because others seeing his shadow after a screening caused too much chaos
Favorite subgenre(s): Gothic horror, dark fantasy
Least favorite subgenre(s): Techno-horror
Lilia Vanrouge
Possibly the biggest horror buff in the entirety of Night Raven and claims to have seen every horror film ever made
Surprisingly quiet when watching scary movies with others so as not to spoil any of the scares
Enjoys pranking other students by spooking them after the movie, especially Silver and Sebek
Favorite subgenre(s): Camp horror, vampire films
Least favorite subgenre(s): None
Silver
Not really into movies since he usually falls asleep during them but is familiar with horror as a result of being raised by Lilia
Actually prefers movies with a lot of jumpscares and shock value because it's the only kind that can keep him awake
Accustomed to his father's attempts to scare him but will still jump and reach for his sword when startled
Favorite subgenre(s): Slasher films, natural horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Backwoods horror
Sebek Zigvolt
Despite being exposed to horror at a young age, still very easily frightened no matter how much he pretends not to be
Will put his arm out to shield others in response to scares only if Malleus is present at the screening, otherwise curls into a ball
Second loudest screamer out of all the boys, bested only by Riddle, which makes him a prime target for post-movie pranks
Favorite subgenre(s): Gothic horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Techno-horror, sci-fi horror

Fake logo designs of various districts/companies in Hermitcraft S8! Something about Hermitcraft brings out the graphic designer in me (*cough* it’s because I love worldbuilding and making tiny details in a world) anyway!
Design notes under cut! (Alongside some headcanons - it is quite long)
Horse Head Farms: this is the logo that started this idea basically. I got such a cool image of an eclipse with a repeated b+w horse head pattern and I really wanted to make it happen. M.C. Esher has done designs like these but as tiles, which I used as inspiration. I think I could have made it look a bit clearer but for my first time drawing something like this I’m pretty happy. The text is from one of the default Procreate fonts and kinda makes HHF look like a law firm (which is the vibe I was going for, soul-stealers and lawyers are often sorta linked in fiction, and supposedly xB and Hypno are their own legal team). xB and Hypno are the only employees other than the people they blackmail into doing stuff for them.
Big Eyes: I wanted a red eyeball as a reference to Tango’s amazing prank on Boatem and I imagine it’s a goofy little mascot for the company. Some big goofy text felt fitting alongside this. I wanted to make a Pass n Gas specific logo too but I wanted to focus on the main “districts” rather than specific shops. I feel like this is kind of obvious but in-universe Big Eyes are VERY unsuccessful and actively losing money.
Hohenzollern Castle: not really a company but Joe and Cleo are cool so I wanted to include them and I had a tiny bit of blank space left on the page so here we are. I actually really love how the sign looks, the wood texture came out nice. They don’t have a logo as much as they do a sign outside their area, created by Joe, with the text written by Joe’s dyes. The “Hohenzollern” is kinda squished because he began to run out of room but was too stubborn to split the word in half. Cleo argues that it isn’t a logo and is just a sign with the castle’s name on it. Joe argues back with a deconstruction of “what is a logo, really?” and something about companies and capitalism and Cleo doesn’t care enough to respond.
Octagon: I am a fool who initially thought it was spelt “Octogon” and had to fix it well after I finished. Oh well. I wanted this to have a very evil look about it. You can instantly tell they’re the evil tech company running experiments on the quantum realm or whatever in a Hollywood movie. Between the unsafe work conditions and the tax fraud, it is a miracle they haven’t been shut down (reason: the government is scared of Doc)
The Evil Empire: the “the” wouldn’t fit so I had to make some sacrifices. Evil Xisuma is dramatic and edgy so he wanted the logo to be in fancy black calligraphic medieval looking text. It fits the evil castle aesthetic the whole area has pretty well too. The Evil Empire is kinda like a Hot Topic store and a Renaissance Fair combined, but it is also involved with Crypto. Despite being so weird it has a perfect niche of marketing to edgy teenagers so it is quite successful. The employees hate it there because their work mandated uniform is to “dress like an evil minion”. Jevin is a slime monster, Wels cosplays a knight and Beef turned into an alien so they thankfully didn’t have to change.
Boatem (BTM): heavily inspired by Grian’s simplified logo he made in Minecraft, where he shortened it to BTM. Despite already having a reference to work off, this was the hardest design. I knew I wanted it to be simple, all-white and leaning back dramatically but I spent ages fiddling with it. Boatem is the most successful company, being perfect for the general public and their shopping district a tourist destination in of itself. It nearly went into bankruptcy when Mumbo was CEO but has been very successful since his Robot took over.
Zedaph Laboratories: my favourite design. Hand writing the text was a nightmare but it came together nicely other than that. Sheep symbol because sheep are his brand. I used the same colour palette as his laboratory. “Laboratory” is misspelled for two reasons: 1) I realised my mistake too late to change it, 2) I think it is completely in character for Zedaph to not know how to spell laboratory and only realise after Tango points it out and be forever haunted by his mistake. Don’t let the sleek corporate design fool you, Zedaph is still wild and is the only person in the “Zedaph Labratories”.
#btw I did this on procreate rather than photoshop#and it was such a pain. Procreate is better for drawing imo but text editing and transformation options are so limited#locus fandom time#locus art time#long post#how the hell am I supposed to tag this lmao#Hermitcraft#hermitcraft s8#hermitblr#Boatem#horse head farms#Zedaph#logo design#graphic design#fanart#hermitcraft fanart

💛 - if you are comfortable sharing, what is your headcount? do you keep track of it? / 📼 - do you have any non-human alters? if yes, which species are the majority of them? / 🌱 - do you have a headspace? if yes, describe it! if no, do you want one?
finally getting around to these 💛 - honestly No Idea at this point. there are about 5-7 ppl who front super regularly. We Think. there might be more, its hard to tell. there are definitely More who likely front less often and are more like. internally-inclined? idk how to put that. but we havent actually taken the time to do any sort of Count. and i feel like it could fluctuate wildly over time (it has before). so Who Knows. mayb we should start that 📼 - literally none of the members of our system identify as like. Human. all of us have weird kin shit going on that is EXTREMELY prevalent for us in terms of identity/gender stuff, but which we pretty rarely Actually talk about. one of the things that complicates this, though, is that while there are Patterns that we have wrt what forms/kin things/etc each system member Tends to gravitate towards, none of those are set in stone and All of the 'usual' things span multiple 'species' or whatever you want to call them. so like. we have a lot of yknow. forms/gender/kin stuff that are Robots, Object Heads, Monsters, Aliens, Objects In General (especially living swords or machines), Furries, Plushes, Pooltoys, Balloon Dogs, Cryptids, Suits (think like. lethal company employees or HUNK from resident evil), etc. etc. etc. etc. and different system members might stray more towards some of those forms than others, but its honestly all over the place and is really confusing to keep track of. which is part of the reason we rarely talk about kin stuff at all (the other big reason being shame/embarrassment, but thats a different issue) but essentially it boils down to 1. figuring out who the fuck is even fronting 2. figuring out what form or kin or w/e that person is feeling like and both of those can switch multiple times even on a single day so the short answer i guess is: none of use ID as human In The Slightest, but as for What we are, its fucking complicated 24/7
🌱 - yes, but its been something thats been a lot fuzzier as of recent, and we generally feel less-inclined to try and mess with it these days (always feels like a waste of time, even though it can be helpful; it used to be) our headspace has Weird mechanics and is weirdly consistent. we've always been pretty naturally good at like. mapping/figuring out Physical Spaces and such, so i guess that makes sense, but it's been wild to describe it to other plural folks w/ headspaces and have them essentially go "no mine isnt like that at all, what the fuck" we have actually based a couple of different writing projects around it (Prismic Sanctum and Oubliette specifically, both are older projects not currently updating, but still worth a potential read) and continue to mess with it as a worldbuilding concept here and there if i had to boil it down: it's a massive collection of various areas that are all in a consistent layout, that could be mostly mapped out with cardinal directions. so like, if you travel North from Area A, you end up in Area B. you will Always end up there. same thing with traveling through doors, etc. some spaces are vague about distance (like the forest between the mass of highways hanging over a void and the big ashen wasteland; traveling through it has different, inconsistent travel times) but Directions are pretty much always set in stone, even then. physical space also doesnt always make sense. you may go to the 2nd floor of a 4-story apartment building, find a trapdoor in an apartment, go up into it, and end up in a castle that cant physically exist at the same time as the apartment building. but, that trapdoor will ALWAYS lead to that place, so locations are just about Always consistent the type of locations also vary wildly. often theyre either places that are possible in the real world but a bit Off (like an elementary school where gravity outside/on the playground is reversed so you can fall into the sky, or a mansion where the physical space is larger or smaller in comparison to you depending on what doors you walk through), or, theyre entirely surreal spaces that are completely impossible (like the aforementioned clump of many highways suspended over a black void that are lit by yellow streetlights, or the basement thats several miles wide with varying ceiling heights, or the motel where every room leads to some different, impossible space) it can be genuinely fun and interesting to """""Explore""" it, even though i know its just our brain generating all the weird spaces. its like one of those homemade TTRPG games that you play by yourself, where even though a Lot of it is coming from your own imagination, its still fun to mess around with
#ask#asks#headspace#DID stuff#this stuff is honestly also rly embarrassing to answer#bc we RARELY talk about the DID stuff so it feels like something where some random follower/mutual will find out and just be like#'oh huh. theres something Wrong with you' and bail#also the destructive force of Feeling Deeply Ashamed And Guilty For Sharing Any Personal Details/Interests Ever but thats a constant#but idk. i hope ppl find it interesting at least

Look you’re the only person I know off the top of my head so I’m sorry to call you out but-
Why transformer sexy?? I am intrigued and do not understand but wish to know more??
sdfjsdkfj PLEASE this is hilarious 😂 i would be more than happy to (attempt to) explain why transformer sexy. buckle up, babes, we're going on a journey.
the barest explanation i can give is that a) i find things like aliens, monsters, etc attractive; & 2) transformers are often relatively close in general shape to many human body types i find attractive, while also being so incredibly, distinctly not human, which, in my opinion, makes them all the more sexy. i'll admit too i do find many vehicles sexy, which is another bonus with transformers.
plus. they're B I G.
examples under the cut with some explanations to my own personal attraction, but disclaimer! these are all from the IDW1 comics! & the artists illustrating the comics DID play an important role in robot sexiness.
(i could go into other tf media too, but this is already lengthy sdhfjgh)
SO, let's start off easy. rodimus is a prime (heh) example of a sexy bot. artist: alex milne
the broad shoulders. the narrow waist. the long legs. This is the main, overarching theme. This is the Good Shape™. He's got bright colors & a cocky demeanor. plus he can set himself on fire. those lights on his waist are tasty too. hot damn.
up next, we've got another classic: optimus prime. first two are milne, & third is by nick roche
once again, we have broad shoulders & a snatched waist. we have big arms. we can also see from the second panel that these rigid, mechanical beings can be fairly flexible. plus, who doesn't love a beaten, disheveled man? i know i sure do. bonus points for him too because he's relatively big & tall as far as transformers go, whereas rodimus is average height.
up next is megatron. all of these are milne drawings
personally, i think the black look is better––that's when he turned into a stealth bomber-type plane––but both looks follow the Good Shape. all about that shoulders & waist, baybee. the body language on display here is great, too. more examples of how much freedom of movement these giant robots have.
i can't not talk about my all-time favorite bot, fortress maximus. all three are by milne
he is a bit blocker than previous examples, but that makes sense for a giant powerhouse tank prison warden like himself! & he does still follow the Good Shape. he's massive! he has fun helmet fins! he's got guns in his legs! he's handsome 🥰 (i do also like to imagine voices for lots of the bots, & i imagine his would reduce me to a quivering mess.)
we got some ladies too, don't worry! this is arcee, by casey coller & sara pitre-durocher respectively! look at her thighs, i mean damn! she's also ferocious, & i love that in a woman.
then we have windblade & firestar (milne), & chromia & the mistress of flame (saren stone). the lady bots tend to be curvier in design (but not always), though not necessarily bustier. trust me when i say there are some boobalicious boy bots (*cough*prowl*cough*).
& now for shits & giggles, some bots with exaggerated or unusual body shapes that i also find attractive for one reason or another 🤪 (hayato sakamoto, guido guidi, milne x3)
i have SO many more examples, but we'll be here all day if i keep going 😅
In Conclusion: robbits sexy
#hyena asks#dskfjghf let me show my Whole Ass in an explanation on why i'm a robotfucker#tf#if you don't wanna read it all just look at the pictures. i promise. robots hot#don't look at me

Alrighty, my pretties!
So, let's get #fantasci tumblr going!
First things first.
"Learn by example" & "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"
I'm a #heroes and villains gal, and I love the community that exists around that tag. So let's try to encompass that!
All of the below goes for all types of creators: writers, artists, meme creators -- I just can't ctrl+h on Tumblr.
My experience with #heroes and villains has taught me that:
A - Ships
People love ships! #hero x villain is more popular than #heroes and villains, so make sure to tag your ships!
Your ship doesn't need to be romantic, I tag platonic, found family and friendship snippets and prompts as #hero x villain too!
It may get annoying for readers who don't want romance to see their favorite tag bombarded with romance. #hero x villain doesn't have a solution to that, except the occasional #enemies to lovers tag which makes the genre clear.
In our new community, make your content reader-friendly by tagging your post as romantic or otherwise, or mentioning it in the A/N at the top, or adding a genre disclaimer. Put a readmore so that users can scroll past if they don't have the right settings enabled.
No, don't have a blandly tagged post just to fish in defenceless readers! That's unethical! And your readers will be annoyed and may even block you (I know I've blocked users who won't add the right trigger warnings, make me uncomfortable).
B - Names!
Snippets and prompts without names receive more traction than ones with them in the #hero x villain and #heroes and villains "fandoms".
Idk, guess it's easier to get into the story, at least for me.
Of course, you can't have just Hero and Villain. What if they're both heroes? What if you have more than 2 characters?
Solution:
Villain names: Villain, Other Villain, Supervillain, Sidekick, Villain Sidekick, Henchman, Thief, Vigilante(?)
Civilian names: Civilian, Reporter, Mayor, Kid, Child, Teen, Parent
Now, what if your characters aren't easily definable? That's fine too! Some heroes are evil, some villains are good. But they still take their Hero/Villain name in the story BUT it's made clear who's the good guy
1) through their actions or
2) the tags like #good villain #bad hero #evil hero. These tags also make it easier for users to navigate their niche.
For example:
Maybe I want to read about sweet villains?
Then I'll look at the tags #good villain #kind villain #soft villain
What if I don't want to read about abusive characters?
I'll filter out the tags #abusive hero, #abusive villain, #cruel hero, #cruel villain and so on
It makes my navigation simpler, and if a writer prefers to write about cruel heroes, I can just filter them out without outright blocking them, keeping the door open for me to read their other works which may contain the tropes I do like which won't show up if I've blocked them.
It may feel weird, especially after you've chosen the perfect names, but I sincerely think the lack of names makes it easier for readers to get into the story.
If you still want names, you can always create a character list separately, or add in the names at the end or in a later part of the series (series of snippets! Not talking about your novel series here!)
Examples of #fantasci "names" off the top of my head:
Pirate, Queen, Thief, Mermaid, Prince, Knight, Robot, Alien, Human, Fairy, Warrior, General, Leader, Monster, Dryad, Dragon
If they're famous myth or fairytale figures, then feel free to use Cinderella, Medusa, Athena, Ares etc.
Disclaimer: I don't know if this might not be as big of an issue in #fantasci. Because while I have seen nameless fics get more traction on #heroes and villains, and I prefer those too, because I like just running head on into the story, who's to say #fantasci tumblr will be the same?
C - Organize!
<> Use the tags like above, it's still a new community so tags will grow and decline organically, I hope. But that's the tagging system I'll be using on my blog and for my works.
<> Have a masterlist on your blog, categorized however feels right for you.
<> Write what genre your work is, in the tags or A/N. Fluff, angst, flangst, whump, hurt no comfort, hurt/comfort etc.
<> Differentiate between mediums!
If it's a snippet, prompt, or if you're promoting your OCs or published works.
This community started because of the information overload on #creative writing #fantasy etc, such that people weren't getting readers, and the #hero x villain writers who were getting readers, weren't getting readers if they went outside that genre.
So, tag it as #fantasci snippet/s, #fantasci prompt/s, I guess
If you're promoting your book, maybe tag it as #fantasci book?
I can guess how good it feels to complete a book and you want everyone to buy it and read it, and it may seem like you should promote it everywhere to everyone...
But think about it from the reader's perspective.
Maybe they can't afford to buy books at the time, but they would be the absolute best supporter of your snippets because they love cyberpunk found family which is the specialty of the snippets you post for writing practice on Tumblr.
And maybe they'll be so in love with you as a person for making their days better with your snippets, that they buy your book the first chance they get when they have cash to spare.
Don't scare them off by filling the tag with books that you have to buy before you read them. Yes, even if you're indie authors. We already have #fantasy #indie author etc (and I think they suffer from a highly skewed writer: reader ratio too).
This community is for people who want to check out the fantasci genre, want to fill prompts, want to read short snippets that explore one trope or one cliche they like.
It's perfectly okay to be excited for your book. But think of the community.
If you really want readers, do it organically through what's essentially content marketing. Write prompts, snippets, prompt fills. This will get you followers and traction. THEN promote your book on your own blog. The people who like your snippets will like your published work you put more effort on lol.
<> Put trigger warnings! Tag it if it's not sfw! If it has those themes or even allusions to them! It is NOT fun to be reader and suddenly come across something that makes you uncomfortable. Happens enough times and you're blocked.
D - Interact!
Here's a handy list for interacting with creators.
I once wrote a long and heartfelt email to an indie game company. They responded with a generic corporate thank you and a "look out for our next game."
That sucked.
Made me feel bad, actually. I would've preferred no reply at all because then I could assume it got lost, or I could've forgotten.
But they replied and didn't make it seem they valued my appreciation... that company has a bad impression in my brain now, and if I do play their games, I just don't want to interact with them anymore.
More Tumblr specific is when I interact with a blogger's work and write such a long heartfelt reply and they don't reply at all. Still better than a corporate reply, but happens enough and it makes me feel bad and I regret spending time writing that stupid email.
If I write a paragraph-long appreciation letter for 2 people, and one person replies back and interacts, while the other doesn't do anything, who do you think I'm gonna write more paragraphs of appreciation for?
Why am I saying this? Don't I think you already know, most of you being creators and all?
The success of #hero x villain lies in its community. Of course, there are more lurkers and likers instead of rebloggers and commenters.
But rebloggers and commenters exist! People even send asks! They especially send anon asks, with requests for prompts or snippet continuations
How it works is that:
A reader will enter the tag first as a lurker. They might not even heart your posts.
They see a few posts, see what they like and don't like
They check out an author's masterlist for other works
They follow if they like your work enough
They might let you know what they like as an anon, might even become a regular anon
They might send anon ask requests which you are free to accept or reject. Do not feel pressured. You are allowed to say no.
Best case scenario is they comment their appreciation, and reblog for their other followers to see.
I see that, despite this blog (@fantasci-side-blog) getting followers thanks to the pinned post, there's isn't much interaction.
I'm sure you know that hurts. Doesn't hurt me much right now because I'm not actually posting my own works, just reblogging stuff I like. Sometimes I'm adding little comments.
It does make me anxious over the lack of community though. But I'm going to chalk it up to it having only been a few days since I created the hashtag.
The fact that you're not interacting could have multiple reasons:
<> You don't like the content I'm reblogging.
Valid. But seriously, nothing? Wow, my interests are niche online too. You want to follow blogs you want on your dash, right? Why are you following my blog if you don't like the stuff I'm posting?
<> You don't want to reblog on your main blog and are thinking of creating a separate blog just for reblogging.
Hmm, that could work but only if you have a good enough following, or expect a following on that blog. Otherwise, you're just talking to an empty void and defeating the purpose of reblogs.
<> Posts aren't showing up on your dash.
Valid. Time differences, or your dash has too much already, or Tumblr glitches.
<> No time.
Valid. I hope you find the time to relax. Please prioritize your health (mental and physical, idk if there are any other) over social media.
<> You liked it but have nothing to say.
Valid. But an empty reblog might help the creator. Not all creators appreciate empty reblogs, but if that empty reblog leads one of your followers seeing it who does interact with it, well, that's the dream.
<> You hearted it, isn't that enough?
Unfortunately, not always. Some creators like likes, for sure. But all creators prefer some form of interaction.
<> "I queued it."
Hi-5! I do this too! Read the next point.
<> "I'll tag and queue later."
I do this too! Valid imo. But I try to make it a point to prioritize posts with low notes or low interaction or new writers over popular Tumblr blogs with hundreds of notes a piece. I hope you can see my logic. Sometime posts that didn't get interaction when they were first posted get a lot when they're reblogged at a different time of the day or year.
<> No one interacts with my work! Why should I for anyone else?
Community, darling. Read below.
You can't just keep posting your work and expect engagement but then not respond to said engagement.
As a reader, it's like talking to a void. I will stop engaging and feel sad. I am giving my time, energy, feelings. But I feel embarrassed about writing so much for nothing.
The writer doesn't owe me engagement, of course not.
But why should I, a reader, interact if I'm not receiving anything in return?
What if there's another user who's not as a good of a creator but is actually friendlier?
I'll go there. I'll interact more over there.
It's not that the writer already invested time and energy into making their work that they shouldn't have to put more time and energy into a back and forth.
It's that the reader is also putting in time and energy to
1) actually go through your work
2) think about what to write
3) writing it
4) reblogging or comment or sending an ask for others to see.
It's a symbiotic relationship.
It's community.
Most of my friends are users turned mutuals whose posts I interacted with. We don't need to reblog all of our friend's works, but I have friends I can talk to, help out, get help from, tag on posts I think they'd like, share posts with which they then do reblog.
It's just a wholesome relationship.
Sometimes an author won't reply to my reblog publicly, but will take the effort to message me privately. This may also soon take the form of them becoming my actual friendo! 🤩🥰
A social media consultant I worked with once (she was really nice and intelligent, don't be mean) said that if someone is taking the effort to engage with you, you should put double the effort to engage back.
I agree. For the above reasons.
-
E - next steps
This is just me trying stuff out! This is NOT the #heroes and villains community so some things might work, some things may not. We're here to try everything including new ideas and see what to stick with!
Next steps for me and you
Create a masterpost/ masterlist of previous works
Create an intro post (optional)
Mention if you prefer asks or anon asks (optional)
Mention if you take requests (optional)
Interact with blogs and stories you like
Use #fantasci tumblr on your old posts, they'll show up in the tag dw
Don't tag me for every single one of your posts, because this is my side blog, not a community wide blog. I have my own preferences and time limitations and I won't read stuff that doesn't interest me. And I'll only reblog stuff that does interest me or stuff I like. I would appreciate being tagged in stuff you think I'm interested in though! Just not everything you ever post lol
PUT TRIGGER WARNINGS. Tag your stuff! Or risk getting blocked!
My birthday's coming up soon so prepare presents. I do accept early and late presents so you can give them to me any time of the year. I take cash, credit, gold, magical amulets, books, writing advice, and more! :) (highly recommended)

HEY THERE PEOPLE OF TODAY AND ROBOTS OF TOMORROW! IT'S ME, CLARK! There is a madness deep in the dark catacombs of Castle Clarkenstein. For years these claustrophobic corridors have been the home of the ghoulish giraffe himself, watching as the world passes by. He prefers it this way. It gives him more time alone with the voices. The voices tell him many strange things. Yet they always come back to one: make more monsters! Everyday they tell him this. Everyday he is unable to comply. Hey, being a mad scientist on a budget means he can’t afford the fancy scientific equipment needed to breathe life into newborn abominations. Guy’s gotta afford pizza somehow. Luckily, he has discovered a way of sorts to please the voices. During all those years of watching, Dr. Clarkenstein noticed a particular pattern. Every night during October saw artists posting new pictures based on peculiar prompts. Many of them based on children of the night. While the spotted specter might not be able to craft new zombies, he can sure as heck sketch’m! As such, I provide this friendly warning to you all now: Be afraid. Few people can survive the horrors that are DUDELZ of the Damned!
By that I mean I decided to do my own take on Sketchtober this year just minus the prompts. Anybody gotta problem with that? Tough, cuz I already drew this crap so you might as well check it out.
How does an alien hailing from the planet Garbanzo manage to run a successful drive-in business in the age of streaming services? By not being an idiot. After buying a former run-down truck stop turned drive thru, Ziggy realized his enterprise had to cater to a niche audience. A niche audience that, like him, realizes the best way to watch B-Movies is on a big-screen from the comfort of your car. It’s why the Robot Monster goes to such great lengths to keep everything running smoothly. Thus everyday he sweeps the parking lots, pops fresh popcorn, and inspects his projectors. Gotta make sure the movie can actually be watched, am I right? Can’t very well enjoy The Blob when your equipment’s possessed by evil and spewing out blood like a gore geyser! It’s why he and his wife Wanda make sure to sharpen the chainsaw whenever possible. That’s just smart business!
It’s also an excuse for me to pay tribute to Evil Dead. Specifically the scene near the end where Ash (Bruce Campbell) stumbles around the cellar of the cabin, looking for buckshot only to find more blood. The poor man has the stuff dumped onto his head by the gallon via leaky pipes before he’s seen quivering in front of an antique projector. More of the red stuff leaks onto the lens, making it look like the whole world is turning a creepy shade of crimson around our hapless hero. According to Campbell, the scene was meant as a tribute to one of the production’s backers, Andy Grainger. Thank goodness for Andy then, cuz it’s easily the most ironic moment in the movie, even serving as the cover for the comic adaptation years later. It at least serves as the perfect visual for Sam Raimi’s style of directing. Weird camera techniques, buckets of blood, and Bruce Campbell’s sanity shredded to pieces. Now here it all is in my tribute to the films starring Clarksburg’s resident B-Movie expert, Wonder Ziggy. I hope to draw more of this crazy character soon, but for now I hope you all enjoy this DUDEL!
MAY THE GLASSES BE WITH YOU!
PS: In case anybody's wondering where yesterday's DUDEL is, sorry folks, my schedule got wonky. I plan on re-releasing that soon, but first I gotta finish a commission for my friend AND cleaning my entire house to bottom. My entire body is sore, though given Ziggy's circumstance, maybe I shouldn't complain. XD

What I've Been Watching On Netflix
Big Bug
Big Bug is a fairly good series full of robots acting badly. It's a Sci-Fi black comedy from France.
Godzilla: King of Monsters
I watched these out of order, so I almost turned it off. But I'm glad I stayed through the end. It was worth the watch. Rogue scientists race to reset the balance of humanity by awakening monsters. Godzilla rises to fend off the Titans.
The Midnight Sky
George Clooney does sci-fi in a slow-moving post-apocalyptic story about a lonely scientist in the Arctic. He works to stop astronauts from returning to a global catastrophe on Earth.
Atypical
I enjoyed this comedy-drama series set in Connecticut. It focuses on 18-year-old Sam Gardner, who is on the autism spectrum. But we get to know the whole family and their various quirks and foibles.
Chimp Empire
An excellent documentary about our cousins' culture.
Prometheus
I didn't know this was the 5th installment of the Alien franchise. I began to suspect as familiar objects appeared and the action progressed. Actually, it was a quite satisfying way to watch it!
The Social Dilemma
Billed as a docudrama, this is about the negative effects of social media. It may be informative if you live under a rock, but I did keep watching to the end.
You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment
I learned that little things in your diet can make a big difference in your health. Our food system is screwed up. You can look slim on the outside and still be fat on the inside. A lot of doctors are still not educated on what a healthy diet consists of. I also lost my appetite for animal protein.
School Spirits
Not another High School series! But I liked it. Maddie investigates her own murder at the local high school. She meets other ghosts from different eras and becomes friends with them. They are all trying to figure out how to move on.
65
Humans discovered Earth 65 million years ago. After a crash landing, an astronaut finds a girl from one of the other ships and works to get her off the dangerous planet. Slow moving, but it works well.
Lift
Heist comedy worth $500B in gold bullion. Exciting. You can see the twist coming.
LIve to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones
Another long drawn-out documentary. Nothing you haven't heard before, except the Blue Zones are shrinking and disappearing. You need to do some work to create your own Blue Zone.
Detective Forst
Polish detective movies are in their own genre: grungy, dark, brutal, complicated, frenetic, blurred lines of right and wrong, survival against the odds.
Cowboys and Aliens
A spaceship arrives in 1873 Arizona. Yeah, okay, good movie. But it begs the question, why are aliens who are smart enough to build an interstellar spacecraft so brutal, running around naked, trying to kill everyone? So they are the advance-testors, but even so.
A Trip to Infinity
A documentary about the concept of infinity filled with enough explanatory moments to give us a brief idea about the endlessness of the universe.
Level 16
A mostly boring, science fiction B-movie. Nothing to see here people. Move along.
The Magicians
Fantasy with depth and young adult angst. I never watched season five, so I watched the whole thing from the beginning again. I also read the novels at least three times. You probably won't believe me when I claim to like hard science fiction better. But you would be correct to say that I love Mr. Grossman's story. I am satisfied with the TV series timeline.
Made in Italy
Starring Liam Neeson and real-life son, Micheál Neeson, this film is about a father and son who travel to Italy to sell a house they inherited. The film examines themes of art, loss, and family.
Queer Eye: Season 8
So nice to have the Fab 5 back on my screen, but oh so short! This season seemed a bit too slick, but I loved it anyway. What am I going to do without them?
Orion and the Dark
This is a kid's animated movie. It's a bit jumpy--maybe that's a reflection of the neurotic kid who's afraid of everything. Just when you're thinking it's over and that was real short, it starts in again.
Rim of the World
Another kid's movie. Not much to see in this poorly developed sci-fi movie. Crudely pasted together: for example, an injured child with vital information is unconscious, then up and running when it is time to go. Lots of running around in circles because there is nothing better to do, and the movie needs to be longer.
Anon
This is future hi-tech criminal noir. How can you get away with murder when everyone records what they see? Great science fiction.
Alexander: the Making of a God
A dramatized documentary. Very enjoyable, but they draw things out. It probably could have been done in half the episodes. I enjoyed hearing the historians interviewed as much as I liked watching the dramatic presentations.
Freaks
Science fiction story. Some humans have new powers and are being discriminated against out of fear. They fight for their life.
Einstein and the Bomb
Another dramatized documentary. All of Einstein's words were taken from real life. A good show for the most part.
Pluto
Anime about strong robots with strong AI.

Series 8 Episode 6: The Caretaker
This episode was written by a transphobe 🙁. With that disclaimer out of the way, today we’re going to be checking out The Caretaker. This is an episode that splits opinion, so let’s see what I think of it.
The first thing to address in this episode is the scale, because compared to the likes of Listen and Time Heist, it’s comparatively smaller in stakes and scope. We’re just spending time at Coal Hill with the Doctor going undercover chasing an alien robot. I don’t think this is an unwelcome change, and the episode uses this to its advantage by having an episode that focuses on our main trio for Series 8: Twelve, Clara, & Danny. Sadly due to this, our villain and setting by design aren’t going to be very interesting or creative, but this is fine as long as the episode nails its character work.
So, does it? This will be where I disagree with a lot of people, but yes it absolutely does. As we’ve seen in previous episodes of this series, the Doctor and Danny have felt like they’ve been on a collision course. Clara’s had to try and balance her life with the Doctor against her life with Danny, and alongside this has had to reassess her morals as she comes to terms with Danny being a soldier. This is the episode where the two collide, and I love it. Of course the Doctor and Danny hate each other, we’ve been able to see that by how the two have acted independently of each other, and with Clara stuck between them this confrontation means life is about to get harder for her on both fronts. She has to face up to her lies and come clean to Danny about her travels with the Doctor, and we’ll see her struggles on the Doctor's side of things in the next few episodes. This sets up our 2nd half of the series really well, with these two playing tug-of-war over Clara until someone ends up losing, and so I have to commend the episode on playing a big part in moving these characters onto the next stages of their arcs.
I think this episode does have some small issues. I find the 12th Doctor to be very antisocial in this episode? This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and I think it lends itself to the Danny-Doctor conflict very well as we can start to see where Danny is coming from, but I do find him to be lacking that little twinkle of kindness that I love to see out of the Doctor. This is a series of Doctor Who where the Doctor does have troubles with emotions and empathy, which is a theme throughout the entire series, but it’s overplayed a little here and I think that’s a shame.
TL:DR/Overview: The Caretaker has been a difficult episode for me to write about because of how simple the plot is. This is an episode that doesn’t woo you with cool monsters or a fancy setting, and instead relies on its central characters to carry the story on their back. Mostly though, they do manage to do this, and the conflict in Clara’s life and throughout the series is now plain for all to see. However, due to a 12th Doctor that feels a little off, and the lack of anything else big to boost this story up, I’m giving it a B tier. The story is functional and does the job it sets out to do well, but I wouldn’t say it’s exceptional in any areas, so B tier seems like the perfect place for it to sit.

the bbc seems to be leaning on ‘look what/who is in this!!!’ for their dw s13 marketing strategy and it isn’t working for me... it’s like their effort to not give anything plot wise away they’ve made the trailer content kind of boring??? it doesn’t matter, there’s not way i’m not gonna watch, but again i’m @ing the bbc for weird advertising... a couple of quips, some fancy cgi shots and a long visual list of creatures that will feature in the next season a good trailer does not make???
#dw shit#and as somebody who doesn't categorize#my likes in the show by monster appearances#... like it Entirely depends on the plot around said aliens in the show#i could love one appearance and then hate the next one#it's like my mate loves pacific rim b/c they spent a lot of camera time on showing the big robots#but i couldn't give a rats about giant robots... it's what the plot does with them#(i actually thought that movie was dull as dishwater but that's not the point)#like even that sneak peak abt dan tells us shit#literally anybody would react that way to that situation???#at least Tell me something#ur supposed to make me excited about the plot!!!!#there was such a Lack of plot in the trailer content that i'm just?? okay then?#there is not enough content to get anticipatory over

Some things that happen in Sevens that you need to see to believe:
-A riding club, but instead of horses it’s heavy machinery. Like, a backhoe and shit. But it’s treated like a horse riding club and like they’re riding horses. as fr as i recall literally no one questions this.
-there are a TON of weird ass clubs but most of them are one off or minor, this one is a big part.
-Artificial life form from space comes to life b/c someone hit a fax machine to hard
-A pigeon duels. Also he has a brother that’s a human boy. Who can speak to him. this is all played completely straight
-References to DM, Zexal and Arc V by way of monsters, including a baseball themed Hope monster
-One person literally serenades the other in the middle of their duel and drop this raw ass line at the same time. “Hey, would it be alright if I invaded your heart? Even if you say no I won’t stop. Because I was the one, who was invaded first.”
-A chair duels. And has an entire chair themed deck. and drops some of the rawest fucking lines in the show. I really need to stress that this is an honest to god massage chair that duels.
-There are SO many absolutely balls to the wall archetypes including but not limited too, chairs, sushi angels, ramen, meat(bbq specifically iirc), punk rock demons, various dinosaurs, machine wyrms, ants, cleaning, post apocalyptic mad max type shit
-on that note, there are SO. MANY. REFERENCES. like, to old movies and shit. it’s insane.
-a guy is mindcontrolled by a robot drone, probably died and then it’s, never brought up again??
-actual honest to go aliens. a lot of them. their existence here is never explained despite them being reoccurring minor characters. everyone just accepts it. (I’m not saying this is a bad thing, im saying it’s funny). also they all look the same and for a while we were convinced they were all the same person just changing outfits.
-duels IN SPACE.
-duels WITH MECHS.
-we get dropped on us a cast of 6 characters with Yu- names about half way through. You thought Arc V was bad with the Yu4? hahaha. Also they came from space school. Also they all seem to be references to, past ygo things
-~RANZE EYES~
-explosive curry used to power space ships
-there’s ninjas
-please understand this is all real, all happens and all with *elementary schoolers* just to add to the crazy.
-Drones/robots with AI that seems to be, sentient?????
-there are furries.
