They way my Winter Velvet Barbie (In a Fashion Avenue fit) feels like a childhood doll even though I've only had her for a few years and didn't grow up with dolls. She just feels kinda special that way.

My great-grandmother sold Avon. She had an old camper trailer in her back yard that she stored a lot of her things in. Avon, Tupperware, outdated clothes. She passed away when I was in kindergarten, and then my grandma and great aunt cleaned out her house and storage trailer. It all seemed really spooky and ancient to me at the time. I was a child, and these were remnants of a history I had no context for.
When I was a little older, I was a majorette and I was in a lot of beauty pageants, so I had to wear a lot of makeup. But I was also the great-grandchild of Appalachian New Deal workers, the grandchild of an orchard farmer, a trailer park kid. I wasn't wearing high-quality makeup. I wasn't even wearing Walmart makeup. I was wearing 1970s Avon samples from my great grandmother's camper. And this is what it looked like.
I have a lot of bitter feelings and resentment about my upbringing. But, in the wise words of Cavetown, hating on a kid doesn't serve me anymore. When I think about it in this context, I don't see a trans boy forced to do feminine things. I see a poor kid being given the chance to feel fancy. It was misguided. They didn't really listen to my needs. But they were doing what they thought best because they were giving me what they wish they'd have had. I didn't know until much later that that's not what makeup usually looked like. I didn't know I was a poor kid. And as much as it wasn't what I really wanted, I did, in fact, feel fancy opening these tiny little lipsticks, precious for their scarcity, and using them to paint the mask that helped me survive.

Vintage Avon had the absolute cutest product designs. I’ve really never seen any other US cosmetic brand do anything remotely similar.

Blue Devil #12
Huh. Henchmen ripping off their former boss.
Well, that's not something you see every day.
And apparently theft is perfectly okay, but not making sure the guy gets his mail is unthinkable.
