Found someone’s handmade, queen sized puff quilt for $24 at my library thrift store. It’s so warm and heavy, like a weighted blanket. I always wanted to make one but they require so much more material than regular quilts. Kismet.

starting to feel my enjoyment of cooking seeping back in after a long period of intense burnout that had me really slogging along preparing meals with gritted teeth for a good month there. i credit the return of this spark to the much needed break i took on our 3 day vacation that resulted in us eating solely theme park food. while delicious, in all its greasy overpriced glory, i found myself missing the kitchen. so last night for dinner i made heavily spiced chicken wings with crushed peppercorns and garam masala that rendered slowly in its own fat while roasting in the oven, resulting in flavorful charred crisp skin and a really juicy bite. we picked them clean over steamed rice with lime and scallions. i also baked a loaf of marbled pumpkin and dark chocolate bread yesterday for my neighbor as a thank you for doing me a favor last week. it looked delicious. the crumb was tender and plush and velvety, the spiced ginger molasses pumpkin batter swirling alongside the bitter dark chocolate espresso batter, with puddles of dark chocolate bubbling across its top. it looked so lovely i whipped up a second one for us to have for ourselves that's in the oven now, i think it could be a really good breakfast pastry for us this week.

What are your thoughts on Shen Jiu?

Honestly, I don't have a ton of thoughts on him as a whole (っ- ‸ - ς)... Maybe it's because he essentially dies off-screen before the story starts? or maybe just 'cause he's genetically engineered to be off-putting ahahaha

I like him as a function of the plot, and he certainly adds to the concept of real people being more complex and messy than a two-dimensional character on paper. Airplane ultimately made him a flat villain and he filled a specific role in PIDW, but as long as Shen Yuan treats him like a flat character while existing in that world he really fails to understand the nuance that goes in to making someone the way they are. It highlights just how much Shen Yuan treats himself like a passive observer and the other people around him as characters without agency. His tendency to do so really does cause him problems through the series, a not understanding or sympathizing with Shen Jiu's past is definitely a part of that.

Ultimately, as he is, Shen Jiu's a rather reprehensible character, but the more you read the more you understand why he is the way he is. You understand why he felt so insecure, you can see why he didn't get along with Liu Qingge, and why he had a complicated relationship with Yue Qingyue, and what might have made him feel more comfortable in a brothel than on the mountain, and why he was stuck in his cultivation while Shen Yuan was able to move past it fairly easily... it's fun to dig at little clues like that in a book to try to flesh out a side character. And the Shen Jiu extra was good for that too, it gave a lot more depth!

Which is all a very long winded way to say: I think he's a vital character to the plot of SVSSS and really neatly summarizes some of the book's main themes, but also I don't find him all that interesting on a fandomy level (ᵕ—ᴗ—) ...Though I will fuck around with the occasional Shen Bro or disciple!Yuan fic because it can be fun to see how a good writer goes around giving Shen Jiu a chance at redemption / a better life!

the road goes ever on

i need to hand in the report for the research project in just under three months now. and it feels like i haven't accomplished anything yet, despite putting in effort everyday.

i had a small win today though. i've been working on getting a setup ready with which we want to measure our device. and to test it without potentially destroying our device (we currently only have two of them) i measured some v-i characteristics of a transistor (our device behaves a bit like a transistor). and despite being super inexperienced with electronics i actually managed it in the end and the setup is now good to go for the real devices.

think it shouldn’t have been legal that my first day of teaching of the year coincided with grey and rain and storms. however! have some very lovely new students, some very enthusiastic returning ones, there’s new cookies in the cafe, and I get to play with pendulums tomorrow, so there are some (many!) positives

Taking a moment to simply marvel at the colour variation in this wip (an attempt was made to colour correct the photo but alas, my crappy phone camera and crappy lighting made it impossible), this yarn is going to look so neat after I've chain plyed it and skeined it up. I can't wait to see how it's going to turn out so I've been impatiently working on it every day, trying to get the single finished so the plying can begin.
