City Spirits awaken.
So! City Spirts are basically God's sustained by the people in their Cities. Some are Gods born from the belief and people of a City, others are God's who Bind themselves to Cities to sustain themselves in periods of low worship.
Almost all Major Population Centers have some kind of City Spirit bound to them.
The Personification of Los Angeles who slept with Constantine was born from her City, but she was young and weak compared to other City Spirits.
Lady Gotham is an Ancient Spirit who holds immense Power, but purposefully bound herself to the new and growing city of Gotham so she could sleep for a few millenia without worrying about sustaining Worship. She has been asleep for Centuries.
Actually, most City Spirits are Asleep.
Millenia Ago, the most powerful Gods and Spirits of the Infinite Realms fled the Rule of Pariah Dark. They didn't agree with his ambitions to conquer the Living Realm, and didn't want to let him use their Power against the Living Realm either.
So they Bound themselves to newly forming Cities and put themselves into Deep Sleep to avoid his Control. They have been asleep for Millenia now, waiting for the day Pariah would be overthrown so they could return to the Infinite Realms safely.
Then they day came. A New King was Crowned.
And the Cities began to wake up.

I was thinking back to the post I made about ebooks being so much more accessible for so many people compared to paperbacks/hardbacks and the other thing I wanted to add is the vast, vast majority of the time, the author gets so much more profit comparatively for an ebook than a paperback/hardback.
That's not a problem for huge huge huge authors either way, but for small-time authors, or authors with small publishing houses, the difference in profits can sometimes be $2.00 or $3.00 per ebook sold vs. $0.50c or $1.00 per paperback. Really. You pay more, but the author gets a lot less.
In the case of indie authors like myself, ebooks give the highest returns always.
This isn't necessarily something most readers think about, but I have had readers assume that because the book format cost them more, that automatically means more goes to the author. In fact it's often the opposite. There are very few exceptions (university texts come to mind). But in the case of your run-of-the-mill indie fiction, if you genuinely want the most profit to go to the author, get the ebook.
#asks and answers#ebooks more than any other format - audio / paperback / hardback#almost always return profits the fastest#it's hard to explain#but yeah that's how it goes#there are exceptions just like#there are exceptions to everything#also the most expensive format for any author is audio#this is why so many indie authors are straight up using Gen-AI to produce audiobooks#a novel costs around $4000-6000 USD to record in audio#and most indie novels only ever make $1000 over their lifetime if that#for many authors they are either vanity projects#or they thought they'd earn out the loss and then realise just how broke they are#for all that accessibility is extremely important#audiobooks and the cost have killed indie careers#keep it in mind before asking an author to create an audiobook#that's only ever going to sell about 50 copies sdlakfjdas

“What if the evil tyrant who likes to kill puppies for fun actually just needed to fall in love with a sweet naive child who redeems them through the power of love and they were actually good the whole ti-“
What if they weren’t, though? What if their life twisted them to the point that they can only love through violence?
What if the narrative doomed them to ever play their role, a role that has already been chosen by forces higher than them?
What if the sweet, gentle character didn’t love them ‘despite their flaws’, or even at all?
Why should they? Especially if it’s a case of kidnapping. ESPECIALLY if they hurt them. Or their friends. Or take away their agency.
What if that strange contradiction of love and hatred in their heart tore them apart and gave them their justified end?
What if they CAN’T be fixed?
What if they don’t WANT to be fixed?
What if we stopped glamorizing abusive relationships and started actually exploring them?
#so sick of these ‘bad boy tyrant/murderer oooooh’ and then the narrative treats him like he does nothing wrong even as he abuses the protag#this goes for ladies too stop acting like it’s fine just because she’s hot#moral of the story#Claude frollo is an excellent character and I love him for how unhinged he is#can’t think of any other characters rn except the villain of my own book#love u Zalrog#you’re fucked and that makes you fascinating#claude frollo#the hunchback of notre dame#whump#whump writing#whumpblr#whump scenario#whump tropes#whumptober2024#whump ideas#whumper#writing#tropes#writing trope#dark lord#bad boy#tyrant#dark romance#writeblr#writblr#writers on tumblr#btw not talking about complex well written villains who the author doesn’t coddle#or stories where it’s the point that their relationship is messed up and one doesn’t realize it#that’s different and you know it

on today's episode of making the grishaverse make sense: trying to come up with somewhat historically plausible title for nikolai
#every time i read about monarchy in YA i want to scream on the author#pick a historical book pls pls i'm begging you#grishaverse#the grisha trilogy#tgt#nikolai lantsov#same goes for the darkling listening to petitioners in the throne room in alina's r&r vision#they are not in the middle ages by xix century the king's job mostly consisted of paperwork#she's far more likely to find him screaming inside buried under tons of reports from literally everyone#and (if we're talking russian monarchs for the sake of admitted inspiration) the tsar's aide-de-camp had special hour when everyone could#give him petition on paper to be delivered to the tsar#also ALSO#now i have an image of nikolai in my head who is listening to the master of ceremonies and muttering under his breath#the scourge of the true sea the most masterful captain the privateer king.....#and him & sasha are literally dany & jon in that scenario#someone: this is nikolai i lantsov etc etc etc#someone: and this is the darkling

urgh i was listening to a podcast where they alluded to some published romance authors dunking on other authors for writing "gratuitous" and "less tasteful" smut and it reminded me of the time i also accidentally implied something like that on here while i was talking about the less descriptive vanilla shit i write and i want to build a time machine and go back and break my own fingers before i could type that reeee
#it's so interesting that like the entire romance novel industry is seen as 'not legitimate' or 'not credible' by the publishing industry#and some authors try to somehow legitimize themselves by distancing themselves from those 'Other Authors'#instead of making a case for the romance genre as a whole or telling critics to eat shit#the podcast was also talking specifically about some interviews in the 80s#and it drives me bonkers that we're still having the same convos 40 years later trying to “legitimize” the romance genre#like i have personal beef with a lot of the tiktok dark romances we see today too but having oodles of descriptive smut is NOT the issue#and same goes for how fanfic (particularly x reader) is looked down on for being Too Smutty or some shit#LET PEOPLE HAVE FUN REEEEE#anyway good morning lmao

Going into Alecto, I think it's important to expect that the series won't conclude with a clear lesson. Either about morality—what makes a good person, evil getting their just desserts, ect—or a thesis on decolonization. It's not that kind of story.
Deep down, this series is two drunk girls bearing their souls in a dark corner of the bar. An hours-long conversation that wheels wildly through pop culture, past trauma, theoretical physics, dreams and aspirations, global warming, hairstyling, friends, family, gender, personal insecurities, world history, favorite foods. It has a lot to say, and a lot of it profound, but it's not trying to teach anything. At the end of the night, the point was how fucking cool that girl was, and the potent electric potential for something lgbt to happen
#the locked tomb#alecto the ninth#ofc this is just my perspective#but I've been thinking of how the author said that the way she stays true to her story is by giving herself permission to not be a teacher#and that one of the driving forces behind her writing is the rpgs she played as a kid#and how everyone online made fun of the girl characters like they were weak and not good for anything#when she had played the game levelling them up and properly equipping them and beat the boss with them#and how she wants to be able to tell those stories where girls are just really fucking cool and get to have the adventures#so I'm kind of nervous about the idea that tlt is about the evils of colonisation or about taking on God as a symbol of the patriarchy#bc.... I think it might be exploring all that while really being about how girls are really fucking cool#and I'm worried about the potential fallout if a large portion of the fandom goes into the finale expecting those priorities to be reversed

“Social media has made this generation so narcissistic and self centered everyone’s always posting selfies and posting about everything they do during the day” shut up. The human desire to show you exist and you were here is innate and we’ve been doing it since the days we were leaving hand prints on cave walls
#I’m in a romantic mood rn don’t mind my bullshit lol#I have a lot of feelings abt the idea of how we want to show we exist and be seen#it’s really a shame I don’t see this idea explored much in media#there is stuff about leaving behind a legacy in media sure but that’s not quite the same#bojack did do this which I rly liked#in the episode where he’s giving a speech at his moms funeral#talking about how she said ‘I see you’ before she died#the desire to just be seen#also this book I like called moral lessons had a chapter on this#it was a chapter about smoking and how part of the appeal of smoking is#you sort of prove you’re existence. the smoke and the smell of it goes beyond you and your presence is undeniable#and the same is for wearing perfume#‘’‘I am here’ she sniffs happily ‘I am really here’’’#I rly like this book lol#edit: it’s mortal lessons not moral lessons#my bad lol#also the author is Richard Selzer#if anyone’s interested in reading it

Something something Jason feeling like he doesn't quite fit as "Greek" or "Roman" as a metaphor for bisexuality, particularly the semi-canonical bi-coding in his half of experiences during the Cupid scene and how Favonius and Cupid speak to him in parallel to the scenes confirming Nico is gay.
Something something the camps as metaphors for traditionally acceptable forms of relationships and Nico living as a rogue outside of them, rejecting expectation (ergo in himself representing a metaphor of queer identity and living outside of boxes and defined/usually hetero-allonormative/binary ideas of what love/relationships should look like) versus Jason struggling with the expectation to conform to a label and even discussing with Nico both of them remaining at CHB together.
Something something the inverse of Jason shifting away from the camps after he breaks up with Piper, feeling lost and unable to find a place between the camps as he begins to explore his queer identity properly for the first time versus Nico only remaining at CHB because he has entered a relationship. In this essay I will-
#pjo#riordanverse#jason grace#nico di angelo#analysis#i know ive semi-rambled about this before here#but i was thinking about it on the discord the other day#for those in the discord forgive it being mostly copy/pasted from my rambling lol#i say ''semi-canonical bi-coding'' re: the Cupid Scene because. well. it's in the text! it's pretty overt!#which means it's pretty canon but nobody ever really discusses it and Rick has never acknowledged it#but also he never acknowledged Reyna's aspec-coding until a rare instance of him responding to q's on twitter#(that chain was also specifically sparked by me in that instance - due to him replying to my open letter about aspec coding in the series#- which i still find amusing cause it is SO obvious he didnt read it)#and he only like once acknowledged his mostly unintentional aspec-coding of the Hunt on goodreads#and very frequently goes ''death of the author - whatever i say outside the books is irrelevant and doesnt matter. read it how you want.''#''if you can get it out of the text then there's your canon.'' which i respect. reject ''word of god'' canon embrace analysis

Heartbreaking: “problematic” danmei everyone told you to avoid is actually pretty decent and has mildly interesting things to say about poverty and class
#nothing here is groundbreaking or even particularly deep but I do love seeing politics in my silly little gay books#idk. I genuinely think injecting your stories with politics makes them better#even if it’s relatively surface-level stuff like ‘poverty is violence’ it still hits different than#fiction that goes out of its way to try to be ‘apolitical’#(it never actually is apolitical. it just exposes what the author considers to be ‘too controversial’ for general audiences)#erha#2ha#the husky and his white cat shizun#anyway erha hasn’t been anywhere near as traumatizing as people on tumblr make it out to be#like it’s not light reading and you should probably read the trigger tags before diving in#but it’s also not The Most Evil and Problematic Book ever y’know?#cleaning out my drafts#I’m trying to kill cringe and fandom purity culture on this blog so I’m trying to be brave and talk about more controversial things#this has been sitting in my drafts for a very long time
