Spider-Man Read-Through 049: 24 Hours Till Doomsday (ASM 191-193)

Last time, Jameson was convinced that Spidey killed his son. He did not.

Now: Where's Randy?

Remember Randy? Robbie's politically active son? With a very close design? Where is he? Where has he gone? I liked him!

Anyway, Jameson fires Peter because he's convinced the two of them are linked. Robbie's not gonna obey him though.

Where's Peter, by the way?

Oh, I missed that handsome face of his. A date in front of the disco? MJ's still MJ. However, a quick call from Robbie changes their date to an exhibition. By the way, Peter's supposed to graduate in a day. Nice!

Jameson and Marla go to Smythe, who seems like he's pretty sick. Just like me, eh! So Smythe wants both Jameson and Spidey dead, because everytime he created a Slayer, he got exposed to more radiation. Oof. Poor guy. He still shows off his new robot to Jameson... and cuffs him. Jameson only has 24 hours left to live now. Too bad for him!

Spidey, on the other hand, pays a visit to Blake Tower, an attorney. Thank you, wiki created by fans. Tower can't help Spidey, but he has mail for him. Back at home, he finally works on his web formula so that it gets a bit better. Turns out pollution doesn't help his adherence, who would have thought?

Where's the romantic and approachable hero I fell in love with during Romita's run? He seems so far gone.

Peter acts very strangely in this issue. He's very angry, breaks stuff repeatedly, and all around, he just doesn't quite feel like the Peter I'm used to.

Left panel is great though, but still, he's just... out of character, and not for a good reason. Yes, Jameson has slandered him, but the amount of things his accusation ruin in this issue is, to be frank, really absurd. It doesn't feel real. None of this does. What a weird issue.

Spidey fights the Slayer, but he eventually gets knocked out and when he wakes up, he's tied to Jameson in Smythe's lab.

Well, at least that's not too bad of a concept.

As someone commented, Smythe (Alistair/Spencer, I don't even know at this point) giving them 24 hours is a fun concept for comics, but absolutely makes no sense when you consider what it involves.

Spidey and Jonah go see Curt Connors, but his lab is quickly overrun by cops.

Anyway, the Fly (who also has beef with Jameson) attacks Spidey and his nemesis, they eventually faint in the drenched New York streets, and Peter misses both his diploma and MJ's date. What a success!

Eventually, Spidey and Jonah go to Smythe's lab, but he's already dead. What a dumbass.

They eventually sort their situation out.

Aaaaaaanyway. In issue #193, they try really hard to make you believe the Fly is threatening.

Peter's officially fired, because even Robertson's done with him. He angst about whether Jameson saw his real face (he did have the opportunity).

May has the habit to house only gentlemen with the nicest intentions, which means her former home is now being pillaged by a rando.

Damn right. Okay, no, to be honest, some lines in this batch are funny, but the situations are so aggravating and boring that I can't be bothered to laugh.

Disregard my last ask because the latest issue raised a troubling question that I, as a black man, feel the need to clarify with you, a woman. That whole whole Ned Leeds/Betty Brant business is sexual assault via deception right? Like you know more about Clones and Spider-Man 616 than I but I feel like that’s besides the point because it happened to Betty. She is carrying the child of whom she thought was her dead ex-husband. And Ned clone has to know he is a clone. He has to know. Unlike Ben and Kaine, he has the awareness and information of the Jackal and the awareness of his progenitor’s death.

Or am I reaching too far and reading too far into things?

I'm glad you came back and asked this specific question because it's definitely something I have a lot of thoughts on, and I’m glad you asked my thoughts on it as a woman because I think this is one of those comic book storylines that’s hard for me to divorce that fact from -- the fact that I’m a woman definitely plays into how I view this storyline specifically and how it effects me, in ways I don’t think were necessarily intended by some of the writers involved in its ongoing arc who were not looking at things from the same perspective I’m coming at them from. I definitely don't think you're reaching or reading too far into things -- I think that is what's being presented on the page, albeit likely without authorial intent. Just as like a general disclaimer, I'm not closely following Spencer's run for the sheer reason that I'm not enjoying it very much, although I'm aware of the general directions it's taking through friends and social media. But I actually think this Betty/Ned issue goes back pretty far.

First things first, I think Clone Conspiracy really wreaked havoc on how Spider-Man as a series has always handled clones. Pre-Clone Conspiracy, there was a very clear clone narrative going on: clones are their own person, they are not direct copies or replacements of the original. You see this with Ben Reilly and you see it with the Gwen Stacy clones. Clones are treated as their own individuals, even if they have to struggle to get to that point -- there's even an issue of Spider-Man Unlimited where Ben and Betty go on a date. Betty doesn't know that Ben is Peter's clone -- he's introduced as his cousin -- and they both reflect on how you can't go back to the way things were. So even though Ben has all of Peter's memories regarding his initial romance with Betty, the narrative makes it clear that Ben and Betty cannot recapture that connection or that exact relationship.

Here's where Clone Conspiracy changed everything, in my opinion for the worse: Clone Conspiracy's clone narrative is that these clones are, essentially, the original person. I believe the Marvel wiki still actually lists the end of Clone Conspiracy as 616 Gwen Stacy's issue of death instead of Amazing Spider-Man #121, because Clone Conspiracy treated that Gwen not simply as a clone with all of the same memories, but as essentially Gwen resurrected through a cloning process. The Billy Connors who was cloned is treated as the same Billy Connors who was killed by his father in Shed (Amazing Spider-Man #630-633). And the clone Ned is treated as the same as 616 Ned. This is a mess, to put it simply, because it goes against all the previous Spider-Man cloning narratives and, honestly, most popular sci-fi clone narratives, and it's seriously undermining decades of good Spider-Man storytelling in ways that Slott didn't address and that Spencer seems unwilling to. It probably wouldn't have been a very big deal -- a frustrating one, but not a big one -- if all of the clones had perished at the end of Clone Conspiracy, but they didn't. Billy Connors escaped, and it's immensely frustrating to me to see Peter treating the Connors family reunion as something he can tolerate when Curt Connors ate his kid, and the Ned clone slithered away in the gutters to, I assume, spite me personally.

Which brings us to the current Betty Brant storyline in Amazing Spider-Man, where Betty has showed up heavily pregnant and informed Peter that the child is Ned's.

Yeah, I would say this is in fact the worst possible part. (ASM (2018) #67) Just speaking for myself, I'm generally not anti-pregnancy or baby storylines in comics, but this one is making me very uncomfortable for reasons beside Spencer being apparently unable to find any way to fit Betty into his stories without her showing pregnant.

So I'm actually going to take this back way, way to when Betty and Ned first got married, with some explanation of who Ned Leeds is for the uninformed, because, especially with the MCU's Ned Leeds in the mix, he's not exactly the world's most well known Spider-Man character. (I’m sure @ubernegro, who is much more well read on Miles Morales’ canon than I am, has thoughts on how the MCU’s Ned borrowed heavily off the character of Ganke Lee with a 616 Peter Parker character’s name pasted over him.) Ned was initially introduced as Peter's competition for Betty's affections -- Ned was older than both Peter and Betty, a working reporter, and presented as the more "stable" option compared to Peter, who of course Betty vastly preferred before circumstances tore them apart. Ned and Betty married in Amazing Spider-Man #156 and jetsetted off to Europe for Ned's job. This is where the cracks in the marriage began. Betty later reveals that she felt abandoned by Ned in Europe, to the point where she was able to come back to New York without his immediate notice -- as a woman, it's very easy to read their relationship at this point as being one filled with, if not abuse, then emotional neglect. Betty and Peter have a quick extramarital affair at this point -- Peter has just broken up with Mary Jane and Betty claims she and Ned are separating -- that persists until Ned returns and punches Peter over it.

(ASM #229) Betty and Ned reconcile off panel shortly thereafter, but that's pretty far from the end of the story. It's implied that the problems Betty and Ned previously had start to develop again, namely that Betty feels abandoned by Ned, that he is inattentive and, again, as a woman, it's hard not to read it as emotional neglect, if not abuse -- yet. Betty does start another affair at this point, this time with Flash Thompson, and Ned starts acting strangely. It would later be retconned that he was suffering the effects of hypnotism by the Hobgoblin, but like I said, that's a retcon, and what was happening at the time was that Ned was acting erratically in part because he was the villainous Hobgoblin. Ned becomes controlling, threatening, and verbally and physically abusive towards Betty.

(ASM #283) "I suppose you think it's all right for a wife to cheat on her husband!" "No -- but I won't let you hurt her, either." Leaving aside that Peter also had an affair with Betty, something he's conveniently forgetting in the above panels, I've always really liked this exchange, because the narrative makes it clear through Peter's response to Ned that, whatever the audience may think of Betty for cheating on Ned, it is reprehensible for Ned to publicly humiliate her and/or physically abuse her as a response.

Then Ned Leeds dies in Spider-Man vs Wolverine and he's revealed as the Hobgoblin posthumously shortly thereafter and that remains canon for years and years until it's later retconned out, as comics are wont to do. But that's not really that important for this conversation -- my point being, at one point in Spider-Man canon, it's made fairly clear to the reader that Ned is an abusive husband. He emotionally neglected and abused Betty several times over and physically hurt her at least once on panel, with the clear intent that the reader should realize that he is physically hurting her. So for me as a reader and as a woman, this has always been a really uncomfortable relationship. I have a problem with later Spider-Man comics claiming that it's "not Ned's fault" that he abused Betty because of the retcon that he was hypnotized, and I have a problem with the MCU making Betty and Ned into a cute summer fling in Spider-Man: Far From Home, because I feel like Ned's clear abuse of Betty either gets excused or entirely glossed over. And I don’t think the initial abuse storyline is bad -- I think there’s some amount of value in portraying Betty as a woman who marries too young, who experiences a terrible marriage, and who then spends years recovering from that marriage, which was the case up until they retconned Ned’s abuse of her as a side effect of him being controlled by the real Hobgoblin. What I’m specifically uncomfortable with is the post-retcon attitude that since Ned didn’t really mean to abuse Betty, it’s perfectly fine to portray the relationship in a positive light when even before Ned’s abuse became physical that wasn’t the case. I think that’s ultimately really irresponsible storytelling.  As a reader, I’m not against soap opera style storylines -- someone getting impregnated by a cone of their ex-husband seems pretty par for the course. But there’s so much additional context here that I still haven’t entirely processed how I feel about this Betty storyline, except that what I feel isn’t positive.

So yes, I would agree with you when I say I think there’s quite a lot of deception involved in Betty’s pregnancy storyline -- the Ned clone didn’t tell her he was a clone, even though he had full knowledge of that fact, just as he had full knowledge of how badly the original Ned treated Betty over the course of their relationship -- that renders their sexual encounter and Betty’s pregnancy uncomfortable for me as a reader, to put it mildly. I don’t think it’s out of character for the Ned clone, given that he acts much like the original Ned: he’s selfish and controlling, withholding information from Betty to suit his own needs. The tragedy of Ned and Betty isn’t that Ned died, as more recent Spider-Man stories like to portray it -- including this one, where Betty doesn’t have the knowledge that a) the Ned she reunited with was a clone and not the original and b) that that clone later died. (ASM #816.) The tragedy is that writers continue to force Betty Brant into Ned Leeds storylines instead of letting her as a character grow past him, and that the only way Spencer thought to include her, one of the longest running Spider-Man characters, back in the story was to have her appear starry-eyed over carrying the child of (the clone of) her abusive ex-husband, and the tragedy is that nobody writing more recent Betty and Ned interactions seems to realize that Ned was a villain not because he was briefly the Hobgoblin but because of how he treated Betty.

Did Norman’s resurrection undermine death in comics?

Let’s provide a little context. In 1973 Gerry Conway and Gil Kane killed off Norman Osborn in ASM #122. The issue concluded the 2-part ‘Death of Gwen Stacy’ storyline, often debated as the greatest Spider-Man story of all time. The story left little ambiguity as to Norman’s fate as he was impaled upon his own rocket-propelled glider.

As if to hammer the point home, in ASM #123 we saw Norman’s body en route to the morgue.

However, in 1996 the conclusion to the infamous ‘Clone Saga’ storyline revealed Norman to be alive and well. To make it clear that this wasn’t anything other than the bona fide article Norman was depicted with the chest scars left behind by his glider.

The decision was, and to an extent still is, divisive within the Spider-Fandom.

One of the most ardent critiques of the decision was that it undermined the weight of death within the comic book genre.

This is both true and untrue.

It’s true in a sense because every time a character comes back to life it undermines the meaning of death in comics.

But detractors hold Norman’s return in particular contempt. On this point though the above statement doesn’t hold up to scrutiny.

Were we to confine things strictly to the Spider-Man titles there had already several characters who’d seemingly died and returned.*

One could argue that functionally  Gwen Stacy herself had returned from the dead in the original ‘Clone Saga’ from 1975 via cloning. Even if you do not agree there are other examples to be found.

The original Vulture was presumed dead in ASM #48 only to return in issue #63.

Mysterio was also presumed dead back in ASM #141, reappearing in disguise in ASM #193.

In ASM #131 Doctor Octopus and Hammerhead were both killed off in a nuclear explosion!

Yet they both came back between ASM #156-159.

Both Miles Warren and Spider-Man’s clone (later known as Ben Reilly) were believed to have been killed in ASM #149 circa 1975. However, Ben’s survival was confirmed in Web of Spider-Man #117 from 1994 and the Jackal’s in ASM #399 from 1995.

Mendel Stromm died in literally his first appearance way back in 1966 (ASM #37) but his return was confirmed in ASM #418 alongside Norman’s. In fact both characters had technically returned prior to that but their identities had been concealed.

Were we to look beyond the Spider books we’d have no end of examples of deaths and returns in comics by 1996. Heck, in 1992 cartoon ‘Batman the Animated Series’ the Joker often seemingly died only to pop back up with no explanation.

So Norman’s return was far from a new phenomenon within the Spider-Man universe, let alone the wider super hero genre. It was just perceived as such due to the iconic nature of the story he’d died in.

But even then it’s not really a fair point to hinge a critique upon.

Superman himself, the first and most famous of all superheroes, had died in 1993 and returned later that very same year. The story, justifiably or not, had become an instant classic, received tons of media coverage and was entirely promoted upon the fact that Superman was going to die.

Jean Grey had perished in 1980 at the conclusion of the ‘Dark Phoenix Saga’, often regarded as the  most iconic X-Men story of all time. The ultimate resolution of the story revolved  around Jean’s death.

This went on to be unquestionably the most impactful in death in X-Men history yet she returned in 1986.

Unlike Superman or Jean’s death’s, Norman’s demise was never the crux upon which the story hung. That was always Gwen’s  demise considering it was you know…the literal name of the storyline…

Call me crazy but I do not think brining back the Green Goblin after he died in a story called the ‘Death o Gwen Stacy’ really undermines the power of death in the Spider-Man universe.

*For the sake of argument, let’s dismiss examples like Spidey’s own apparent death in ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’ or intentional fake outs. We are talking about the times when a character was intended to be dead but consequent stories back-peddled on that.

 “Although Peter Parker had several love interests in his early comic book history—most notably, of course, Gwen Stacy—when Mary Jane Watson was introduced, she was clearly the be-all and end-all of Spidey relationships. ”

 This is wrong on two counts.

 If we define MJ’s introduction as ASm #25 where we first see and hear her then she was absolutely not the be all and end all of Spidey’s relationships. They weren’t in a relationship and she existed as a gag nothing more.

 Fair enough though, few people count that preferring her furst full debut in ASM #42. Even then that statement is wrong.

MJ was introduced as a rival and foil to Gwen Stacy who was the actually intended endgame be all end all love interest.

 “Before that, early issues of Amazing Spider-Man spent almost a year teasing her as a potential romantic partner for Peter, with Aunt May constantly trying to set up a date between Peter and the mysterious, unseen Ms. Watson. Peter wouldn’t first meet MJ until the final moments of Amazing Spider-Man #42—with the cry of her famous line, “Face it, tiger... you just hit the jackpot!”—and it was love at first sight.”

 Oh okay so they do know about her pre- ASM #42 appearences they are just wilfully ignoring it.

 More importantly it was never love at first sight. Peter was attracted to her but he wasn’t in love with her at all and like 2 issues later was thinking how he actually didn’t like her.

 “Peter immediately began dating her, but it didn’t last that long, and the couple eventually broke up for the first of many times. ”

 Again wrong.

 Peter and MJ at best casually dated. They were not exclusive and not going steady therefore no break up ever occurred.

 “This led to Peter dating Gwen again while MJ, still a good friend to the duo, hooked up with Harry Osborn.”

 Again wrong. MJ and Gwen being friends is contentious. They were in the same friendship group but were not particularly close. Moreover Peter and MJ as I said never broke up. Peter began courting Gwen and said nothing to MJ who had herself been casually dating Harry too.

 This was the 1960s and college kids there was a lot of freely traded flirting and dating at the time. In truth Gwen and Harry were dating slightly more seriously but they didn’t even break up and when Gwen and Peter began courting that pissed Harry off.

 MJ didn’t even immediately begin dating Harry after Peter and Gwen got serious and when she did they were again not exclusive though Harry believed they were. Hence the famous panel in ASM #97 wherein Harry tells MJ she’s his girl and she dumps his ass telling him she’s no one’s girl but her own.

 “Gwen’s now-iconic death at the hands of the Green Goblin in Amazing Spider-Man #121 drove Peter and Mary Jane together again as they both tried to come to terms with the loss of Gwen.”

 This is also not strictly speaking true. Yes Gwen’s death was the catalyst but they were not bonding over a mutual loss of Gwen. MJ supported Peter in his time of need which led to their friendship deepening and spending more time together and from these interactions they fell in love.

 Had other circumstances served to allow a (single) Peter and MJ spent more time together, gotten to know each other better, showcased a lot of care and loyalty to one another the same scenario would’ve occurred. But Gwen’s death was such a big deal it threw them together is all.

 “But once more, it didn’t last that long—Peter’s dual life as Spidey began to tear them apart, and when Peter offered a hasty marriage proposal, Mary Jane turned him down, and decided to escape her stressful life with a move away from New York, leaving Peter on his own again.”

 Again this is incredibly incorrect.

 The first time Peter and MJ were explicitly dating on the page was ASM #136 (the debut of Harry as the new Green Goblin btw) in 1974. Their relationship BEGAN to fall apart after Peter’s proposal in ASM #182 and her rejection of it in ASM #183 in 1978. They were still together though but there was an understanding they were no longer exclusive or going steady so they saw other people whilst still seeing one another and steadily drifting apart in spite of efforts to try and repair their relationship. The final end came though in ASM #1992-193 in 1979. Peter made one last effort to fix things with MJ and convinced her to go on a date with him but Spider-Business made him miss it and so MJ decided she was done with him, telling him as much in the next issue.

This means Peter and MJ had some form of relationship, USUALLY a serious and exclusive one (across THREE titles!) for four to five years!  So ‘didn’t last long’ my ass.

Moreover MJ’s move out of New York wasn’t immediate. She appeared two more times, once in Spectacular Spider-Man #38 and then again in ASM #201 both in 1979.

Only after this did MJ move away and at the time it wasn’t even talked about IIRC. She was just phased out of the series without mention and only later did we learn her absence was due to her having moved away. It was even later that we found out her move away was partially prompted by Peter’s proposal and more significantly her learning he was Spider-Man.

 “Upon her return (and the reveal that she had figured out that Peter is Spider-Man), the two remained friends.”

 Again this is grossly over simplifying things.

 MJ returned in ASM #241-242 in 1983 and revealed she knew Peter’s identity in ASM #257 in 1984. During the interim Peter and MJ were still friendly with one another.

It was the reveal of her knowledge of his dual life along with her own painful past that made them CLOSER friends and confidants.

 “But dual traumas—Peter losing his close friend Ned Leeds, and Mary Jane confronting her crooked father—led to the two getting closer again, and this time Peter’s second marriage proposal stuck. Well, actually, MJ turned him down again but eventually reconsidered.”

 Again no.

 Peter and MJ grew closer following MJ revealing her secret history in ASM #259 and then they CONTINUED to grow ever closer thereafter.

 Ned Leeds death and MJ confronting her father were part of that sure, but they weren’t the root cause.

 Ned’s death was likely the motivation Peer needed to propose a second time and dealing with her Dad is THE thing that led MJ to accept the proposal, but they were already in love, already effectively dating and already very close.

 “Peter and MJ’s married life was defined by a frankly absurd amount of drama. ”

 God. An absurd amount of drama in a SUPERHERO story. Who’s ever heard of such a thing.

 Thank God there wasn’t as much drama in Superman and Lois Lane’s relationship across 70 years or Reed and Sue’s marriage across 45 years.

 It’s not like at one point they split up because Reed put their son into a coma   or Sue miscarried their child only to become reimpregnated with her years later.

 “Mary Jane’s modelling career hit new highs after her marriage, only for her to be stalked by her former landlord, who not only ruined her career but then kidnapped her (the first of many, many kidnappings during her marriage). ”

 Again kidnappings of a superhero’s loved ones! *clutches pearls*

Also MJ’s career was ruined by Jonathan Caesar AFTER he stalked and kidnapped her. FFS at least get the sequence of events right Wikipedia explains this better!

 “Meanwhile, Peter was distraught by the arrival of a couple claiming to be his long-thought-dead parents. Once they were revealed to be Life Model Decoy robots sent by the Chameleon (hired by Harry Osborn in an attempt to get revenge for the death of his father Norman, a.k.a. the Green Goblin) to kill him, Peter had a total mental breakdown, abandoning Mary Jane for a while before they eventually reunited.”

 The article pretends like the above event quickly followed the former when it didn’t.

 Moreover it claims Peter’s mental breakdown was specifically due to his parents being imposters but it wasn’t. It was actually multiple incidents gradually putting him under immense strength and the straw that broke him was actually Aunt May’s coma.

 Like...maybe fucking READ the comic where he breaks down maybe?

 It’s also debatable to say he ever actually abandoned MJ. He went off the rails briefly in that story but it was actually MJ who temporarily abandoned him though she made it clear she would be coming back.

 Then after a lot of other stuff they reunited.

  “And then, oh and then, there’s the Clone Saga, one of the most infamous Spider-Man stories ever told. ”

 FALSE! Peter and MJ’s reconciliation happened DURING the Clone Saga not before.

 “In between all the wild nonsense about Peter clones, Ben Reilly, and Peter being convinced that he’s a clone so he abandons being Spider-Man altogether, Mary Jane became pregnant, only to tragically give birth to a stillborn child after she was poisoned by an agent of the Green Goblin.��”

 Again not true.

 Peter didn’t abandon being Spider-Man because he was a clone. The story arcs ‘Exiled’ and the ‘The Greatest Responsibility’ make it explicit that just because Peter is the clone doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be Spider-Man. It was decided peter SHOULD remain Spider-Man but it was actually his impending fatherhood that led Peter to retire and hand the mantle to Ben.

 Also MJ giving birth to a stillborn child is at best debatable.

 It’s HEAVILY implied Norman merely faked the baby’s death. This makes more sense for his character too.

 “The horror and stress of the whole event—which culminated in the return of Norman Osborn, the apparent death of Ben Reilly (don’t worry, he got better too, eventually, sort of), and Peter’s return to the Spider-Mantle—understandably put the couple’s relationship on the rocks.”

 No it didn’t.

 The story arc in which Norman returned, Ben died and the couple believed their child to have died actually ends with the reaffirmation of their relationship and shows them growing closer and stronger from it.

 This is then corroborated in the very next issue, Spec #241 which again reaffirms they’re relationship is strong.

 “Then MJ got kidnapped (again) by a telepathic mutant who wanted to steal Peter’s life (and his wife) and staged a plane explosion in Amazing Spider-Man#13, which led to Peter believing MJ was dead for over a year. ”

 FALSE!

 Not only did he skip over more than TWO YEARS worth of stories by jumping immediately from the end of the Clone Saga in 1996 to the Mackie/Byrne era (which began in 1998 with the plane crash in 2000) but he also falsely claims Peter believed MJ was dead for over a year.

 He didn’t.

 MJ was presumed dead by the public for just 6 months and for the MAJORITY of that time Peter was in denial over her death. When he found her alive he even admitted he never truly believed she was dead. Meaning Peter NEVER thought she was dead and felt that way for 6 months not 12.

 “As if all this wasn’t more than enough kicks while Peter and MJ were down, Civil War broke out in the Marvel universe in 2006, which saw Peter’s identity made public, the superhero community tearing itself apart over something that is in equal parts tragic and dumb, and Aunt May and MJ having to go on the run after Spider-Man’s ginormous roster of foes started chasing them in the wake of Peter’s big, foolish reveal.”

 Wow there is so much misinformation to unpack here.

 Okay, so first of all Peter and MJ WEREN’T separated or dealing with the fallout of MJ’s trauma when Civil War occurred.

 They parted ways in 2001, got back together in 2003 and Civil War was 2006!

 Furthermore the Parkers didn’t go on the run because of Peter revealing his identity, it was because he no longer trusted Tony Stark and thus decided to go on the run...I said the author was wrong I never said the story was logical.

 “That still left the problem of Peter’s identity being made public during Civil War, however. Peter asked Doctor Strange to cast a spell that would wipe his identity from the mind of everyone in the world, including Mary Jane, in Amazing Spider-Man #641—only for Peter to protect Mary Jane from the spell’s effects at the last minute. Despite being kept in on his greatest secret, Mary Jane ultimately decided she couldn’t keep risking the danger of being someone special to Spider-Man, and told Peter to move on and find someone else to share his life with.”

 Again this misrepresents the sequence of events. The author pretends that these events occurred after Peter and Mj broke up in the new revised timeline when in truth the mindwipe was the thing that led to them breaking up (stupidly).

 Moreover the break up was spawned by MJ (stupidly) not wishing to risk her family not herself.

 “The two remained friends and confidants over the next few years, until another wild Spider-Man event—The Superior Spider-Man, in which a dying Doctor Octopus took over Peter’s body and seemingly sent Peter’s consciousness into the villain’s previously dying body, effectively killing Peter”

 FALSE!

 In Superior Spider-Man Doc Ock created back ups of his own and Peter’s minds and uploaded said copies into one another’s bodies.

 The Peter who died in Otto’s dying body was never the original, the original was simply a passive observer within his own body.

  “When Mary Jane noticed that something was up with Peter, the two quickly broke up again”

 SUPER FALSE!

 MJ DIDN’T NOTICE anything wrong! THAT was why the story sucked shit.

 Otto himself ended things because he believed that they shouldn’t be together because he’d always endanger her.

 “And when Peter was eventually restored to his body and Otto’s deception was revealed to her, Mary Jane decided once and for all that Peter’s absurd life as a hero shouldn’t define her life as well, choosing to remain friends with him but remaining mostly separated from his life. (Valid.)”

 No. INVALID.

 MJ victim blamed  Peter and wasn’t saying his crazy life defined her. She was saying some nonsense about wanting a normal life but still wanted that in the city where Skrulls invade ever summer.

It was toxically out of character.

It also wasn’t ‘once and for all’ since oh I dunno she still stuck around in his fucking life.

“The revitalization of Marvel’s continuity in the wake of 2015's Secret Wars kept this status quo for MJ and Peter—although fans jonesing for the couple’s time together were thrown a bone by Marvel in the form of Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, an ongoing series that began in 2016 about an alternate-reality version of Peter and MJ that remained married, had a daughter together, and currently fight crime as an entire Spider-family.”

Is peter a cheater in relationships?

I wouldn’t say that Peter is a cheater because for me to label a fictional character a cheater there has to be a strong and consistent pattern of infidelity present in their relationships, and that’s not true with Peter. If anything in a serious relationship he’s incredibly loyal -- I think it’s a mistake to view, for instance, the Gwen/Peter/MJ or Betty/Peter/Liz interactions as “traditional” love triangles where one party is torn between two romantic interests because in both in cases despite being pursued Peter displays a clear and consistent preference for the girl he’s with. 

(ASM #96-97) Peter’s reaction to Mary Jane hitting on him, even while Gwen is in England, isn’t interest, but chagrin, which actually from Mary Jane’s perspective is I think a strong part of the reason she does hit on Peter in the issues leading up to Gwen’s death; it’s not to try and break up him and Gwen so much as viewing Peter as someone who is safe to play around with because he’s so loyal to Gwen, or as someone to test to see if he’d break that loyalty, in which case she could write him off as the same as other men.

It’s complicated! I love it! So no, Peter’s not a cheater -- I don’t think we can characterize him as having a pattern of infidelity in his romantic relationships.

This does not, however, mean he’s always behaved great in relationships. Which I think is realistic for a character with a long-running history, but for the sake of the discussion let’s run with it. Before Peter unmasked to Felicia, for instance, there is deception in his romantic relationships. It’s not the deception of infidelity, of sneaking around in a romantic sense, but he is sneaking around -- in his Spider-Man costume to fight crime. This kind of relationship problem isn’t unique to Spider-Man -- “masked hero hides identity from the object of their affection for their safety” is a pretty old tale, but Spider-Man does love to play it up for misunderstandings in relationships. Back when Peter and Betty were together in the Lee/Ditko run Betty often did wonder if Peter was seeing other girls when the reason behind his secretive behavior was Spider-Man.

Which ironically ended up with Betty and Peter embroiled in an extramarital affair -- the marriage was Betty’s to Ned Leeds -- years later, after Mary Jane had turned down Peter’s first proposal of marriage. 

(ASM #189 & #193) So not a cheater -- it’s not his marriage -- but maybe a little bit of a homewrecker, which is very sexy of him actually. Betty deserved to have a wild and sexually satisfying extramarital affair with Peter. (There’s at least one writer -- I think it was Marv Wolfman but don’t quote me on that -- who maintains Betty and Peter didn’t sleep together during this period because Peter would have “never shut up about it” which given how Peter is isn’t an unfair assessment, but my counterargument is that they did because Peter’s canonically great in bed and Betty deserved that dick.)

I think it’s fair to say that towards the tail end of his relationship with Felicia, Peter was having an emotional affair with Mary Jane, who he married shortly after. I don’t think he would have described it as such at the time or realized what he was doing, but I do think that’s pretty clearly what’s on the page. It’s not intentional emotional cheating but it’s hard to say he was 100% emotionally faithful to Felicia, which did cause problems later on down the line when Felicia returned to find him suddenly married to Mary Jane. There was also a brief period where Mary Jane was believed by both the public and eventually Peter to be dead -- she’d actually been kidnapped and her death faked -- where he almost slept with both Felicia and a former college student of his (which is a whole other kettle of bad behavior). But in the end he didn’t go through with either encounter, despite not knowing that Mary Jane was still alive. He did have a long running emotional connection/flirtation during this point with Jill Stacy, Gwen’s cousin and a friend of both is and Mary Jane’s, but I think this attraction towards Jill is actually something he shared with Mary Jane, not something that threatened to separate him from her, as long as I’m spinning out subtext. Jill disappeared from the pages almost immediately as soon as Mary Jane returned, too, even when Peter and Mary Jane really did separate shortly after for reasons entirely unrelated to another woman. 

Rather than a cheater, I think Peter’s just sometimes a little bit of a dog. When he’s dating Deb Whitman in grad school, I do think that in terms of romantic behavior this is when he’s the worst behaved in general -- he’s relatively unattached and directionless and it shows. I wouldn’t say that Peter cheats on Deb, but he yanks her around emotionally and it’s pretty clear that she’s not his first priority and that he’s not particularly interested in her romantically. But he keeps seeing her anyway, which gives her false hope for their relationship considering she really does like him.

But like, even considering he’s yanking her around emotionally, it’s pretty clear he’s not sleeping with her just because he could and then going around seeing other girls behind her back. I pick on Peter a lot for some of his behavior but I think in the grand scheme of things it’s hard to label much in his romantic affairs as intentionally hurtful on his part, even if he is sometimes careless with other people’s feelings.
