As John Maynard Keynes has observed, the proceeds of the booty brought back by [Francis] Drake in the Golden Hind (estimated at £600,000) enabled Elizabeth to pay off the whole of her foreign debt and in addition to invest about £42,000 in the Levant Company. Largely out of the profits of the Levant Company came the initial capital of the East India Company, "the profits of which during the seventeenth and eighteenth century were the main foundation of England's foreign connections" (Keynes 1930: II, 156-). Assuming an annual rate of return of 6½ per cent and a 50 per cent rate of reinvestment of those returns, notes Keynes, the £42,000 of 1580 were sufficient to generate the entire value of the capital of the East India Company, Royal African Company, and Hudson Bay company in 1700, and something close to £4,000 million that constituted the entire stock of British foreign investments in 1913.

Idag vill jag dela med mig av ett otroligt gott och mättande recept på vegetarisk lasagne med röda linser, grönkål, spenat, ostsås på cheddar och lasagneplattor från @smakbox. I ärlighetens namn så fick den mer färg än jag hade önskat. Men smaken, smaken var riktigt fin 👌 Det här är en rätt som passar perfekt för kalla och mörka kvällar, eller när du vill ha något värmande och krämigt 😋 🛒 Ingredienser 3 dl röda linser 3 dl vatten 1 msk grönsaksfond 2 st gula lökar, finhackade 2 st morötter, grovt rivna 4 st vitlöksklyftor, rivna eller finhackade 1 klyfta svart vitlök 1 tsk chiliblandning med timjan och rosmarin 1 burk dolmio pasta bake 5 dl grädde 300 g cheddar 200 g grönkål, repad 200 g spenat Parmesan 🔪 Tillagning Värm ugnen till 200-225 grader ⏲ Skölj och koka linserna i vatten och fond ca 20 minuter ⏲ Blanda ner riven morot och ta från värmen ⏲ Koka upp grädde och låt den reducera för att sedan blanda ner cheddar ⏲ Fräs lök, vitlök och grönkål till kålen mjuknat och löken är genomskinlig ⏲ Mixa innehållet från dolmioburken med lök, vitlök, svart vitlök, grönkål och spenat ⏲ Blanda ihop linser, morot och det mixade i en bunke och krydda med chiliblandningen ⏲ Häll lite av ostsåsen i botten på en ugnssäker form ⏲ Lägg på ett lager lasagneplattor och sedan linsröran ⏲ Fortsätt varva sås, plattor och linsröra ⏲ Avsluta med plattor, ostsås och strö över rikligt med riven parmesanost ⏲ Baka i ugnen ca 30 minuter och håll lite bättre koll än vad jag gjorde 🛎 Njut av din ljuvliga vegetariska lasagne 🍽️ Jag hoppas att ni gillar det här receptet. An analogous tendency [of financialization], Philips notes, could be observed even earlier in Habsburg Spain. The mortgaging of large chunks of future Spanish revenues to German and Genoese merchant bankers was accompanied and followed by the "financialization" of Spanish society itself. "Narrow monetary wealth, irresponsible finance and an indolent rentier class were important in the decline that was taking hold in Spain one hundred to one hundred and fifty years after Columbus's voyages" (Philips 1993: 205). Spain, lamented González de Cellorigo in the early 1600s, "has come to be an extreme contrast of rich and poor, and there is no means of adjusting them one to another. Our condition is one in which we have rich who loll at ease, or poor who beg, and we lack people of the middling sort, whom neither wealth nor poverty prevent from pursuing the rightful kind of business enjoyed by natural law." (quoted in Elliott 1970a: 310)

It's Fine Press Friday!

Veteran letterpress printer and fine press publisher Richard Bigus founded Labyrinth Editions in 1977 in Torrance, California. He learned his craft under the tutelage of noted California poet and printer William Everson and printer and educator Jack Stauffacher at Cowell College, University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1980, Bigus designed, printed, and bound this exquisite edition of Everson's anthology of pacifist poetry, Eastward the Armies, in an edition of 250 copies illustrated with linocuts by California artist Tom Killion, another student of Jack Stauffacher, and signed by the poet and artist.

Bigus handset the type in 18-pt. Centaur, with Arrighi italics and Castellar initials and titling. Other text was set in 12-pt. Centaur and Arrighi italics. The illustrations are printed directly from Killion's linoleum blocks. The book is quarter-bound with leather-thong side stitch in linen and decorative paper marbled by Bigus over boards. Of the 250 copies, ours is one of 50 printed on handmade Japanese Hosho Professional and Suzuki papers. Our copy is another donation from the estate of our late friend, art professor, painter, collector, letterpress printer, and book artist Dennis Bayuzick.
