FOM BLOG: WALSALL 0 - 1 GILLINGHAM
My Thoughts On Walsall V Gillingham…………
I Left My House at 8.30AM in the morning and I made sure I had the following things on me,,,,,,,, (Money, Keys, My Walsall Ticket, My Samsung Galaxy S2, Spare Batteries, My Gillingham Jacket, Spare Lids, My Gillingham Scarf, My Gillingham Bag, Match-Day Programmes, Kent Messenger, A Packet Of Polo’s, Pad and Pens, A Can Of Lynx, and a 500ML Bottle Of Coca Cola) - I had also updated My Facebook And Twitter Statuses Before Traveling To Walsall, and I posted the following,,, On my way to The Bescot Stadium as Gillingham take on Walsall Hopefully Gillingham can make it five matches unbeaten with a draw / win today, and I had also asked Brad and James if they were going to The Walsall Game.
I left my house and made sure the door was closed behind me, and I got in The Passenger Seat, and Karlton was traveling with Me and Diane to Walsall and we can dived the fuel costs equally between the three of us, and we were on our way to The Bescot Stadium, and the first big piece of Gillingham News that we had to speak about was the announcement on Thursday that Steve Lovell had been appointed as Gillingham Manager until the end of The 2017 / 2018 Season and this was an announcement that Diane and myself were very pleased about, One Defeat In The Previous Seven Matches, Four Wins in those seven matches as well and Gillingham have scored in every game that Steve Lovell has taken charge of, The Supporters wanted to see Steve Lovell appointed as Gillingham Manager, The Players have come out and given there full support towards Steve Lovell, and I also saw a comment from Former Gillingham Player Craig Stone who mentioned that Steve Lovell is a great man and coach, and that Steve Lovell fully deserves his chance as Gillingham Manager.
What I found interesting was the comment from Paul Scally who mentioned that there is a very real possibility of Steve Lovell not only being appointed as Gillingham Manager until the end of the season, but there is also a chance of Steve Lovell being appointed as Gillingham Manager for the start of The 2018 / 2019 season and maybe even longer then that as well, but of course, much will depend on what will happen between now and the end of the season, But now that Steve Lovell has been appointed as Gillingham Manager, Steve Lovell can look at adding to his coaching set up, start to look to strengthen the first team squad and start to look at players who Gillingham can sign in The January Transfer Window.
I also remember when Me and Diane spoke to One Gillingham Supporter out-side Priestfield Stadium after our 1-1 draw against Wigan Athletic, when I mentioned that Steve Lovell probably see’s this as now or never for him to be appointed as Gillingham Manager and Steve Lovell was going to do everything he could to ensure that he got The Gillingham Managerial Position on a permanent basis, I am also very interested to see the types of players that Steve Lovell will be looking to sign, because Steve Lovell changed the formation three times against Bury in our last home match and Steve Lovell mentioned that he will chop and change the system if it isn’t working, this means that Gillingham will need to recruit a few players who are flexible and very versatile, Sean Clare played Right Wing and Right Wing Back Last Saturday, Connor Ogilvie played Left Back and Left Centre Back, Josh Parker played Left Wing and Left Wing Back, and Luke O’Neill played Right Back and Right Centre Back, You need versatile players to pull off constantly changing the system so I do wonder on the types of players Steve Lovell will be looking to sign either on loan or on a permanent basis.
Now we had left at 8.30AM, Kings Ferry were leaving at 9.30AM from Priestfield Stadium, The Supporters Coach were leaving from Woodlands Road at 10AM and I know a few others who were looking to travel via car and dived the fuel costs, and because Walsall Train Station is right next to The Bescot Stadium, I can see a lot of supporters looking to travel to Walsall via train as well, Because Gillingham Football Club had not tweeted advanced ticket sales for Walsall, it is difficult to gage on just how many supporters will be traveling to Walsall, Perhaps Steve Lovell’s Permanent Appointment As Gillingham Manager will see more supporters travel to this game, and also, with Blackpool, Plymouth Argyle and Fleetwood Town all being long long away trips, the time it takes to travel to these three matches might be off putting for quite a few supporters, especially as these away fixtures are so close to Christmas, so Walsall Away could be the only away game that some of our supporters look to travel to in 2017 - and that is perfectly understandable, because why couldn’t The Football League give us at least one local away fixture in the run up towards Christmas - someone needs to have a look at The Map Of England again because Fleetwood Town, Plymouth Argyle and Blackpool are all long long away trips.
I sent Diane and Rob A Tweet On Friday as CSKA Moscow had to travel to Khabarovsk which was 6500KM in-terms of distance, If you were to travel to this fixture via car then you would be driving for One Hundred And Seven Hours One Way, I dread to think what the fuel costs would be if your driving for One Hundred And Seven Hours, also, I am surprised that The Russian Premier League isn’t regionalised into an Eastern and Western League, Because The MLS In America Have an Eastern and Western Conference and you would think that given the size of Russia as a country that there division’s might be regionalised ???
Gillingham do have more players available for selection for the game against Walsall, Gabriel Zakuani is back from International Duty - He Didn’t Play For The Democratic Republic Of Congo Last Week - Mark Byrne has broken his hand but he will likely play with a protective cast on his hand depending on whether Mark Byrne has got permission from The Referee, and Ben Nugent is back and should at least be named amongst the substitutes bench, But It looks very likely that Billy Bingham is going to be out injured until the final two months of The 2017 / 2018 Season as Billy Bingham has broken his ankle and the operation has gone well, but with Billy Bingham and Aaron Morris both out injured for the long term, then Gillingham are going to need to sign another Defensive Holding Midfielder just to add a bit of depth in this area of the pitch.
Me and Karlton spoke about Yado Mambo as the tweet went viral on Twitter as Yado Mambo wears Number Eighteen For Ebbsfleet United, and since then, Yado Mambo has been Interviewed about his squad number and Ebbsfleet United gave everyone the wish they wanted - https://twitter.com/EUFCofficial/status/931082882235404288 - Ebbsfleet United are auctioning A Mambo Shirt with The Squad Number Five on the back for charity, with all the money from the shirt sale going to Prostate Cancer UK, which is a really good cause and Ebbsfleet United have gained plenty of new followers off the back of Yado Mambo and the original tweet from Joe has got over 16,000 Re-Tweets - https://twitter.com/RedAndWhite11/status/929413890097721345 - Ebbsfleet United won 2-1 against Leyton Orient, Danny Kedwell scored in that match for Ebbsfleet United while Steve Davis was relieved of his managerial duties at Leyton Orient, who are looking for A Manager who will look to keep Leyton Orient in The Conference National at the very least.
Looking at The League One Table, Walsall are Seventeenth In League One With Nineteen Points, Gillingham have played a game more then Walsall and Walsall are four points ahead of Gillingham,  It is crucial that Gillingham avoid defeat at The Bescot Stadium, A Draw would keep Gillingham in The Relegation Zone, But Walsall would not pull themselves seven points clear of The Gills, But If Gillingham can somehow manage to pull off an unlikely win against Walsall, then even if Gillingham are still in The League One Relegation Zone, we have at the very least pull themselves back within touching distance of the team’s above us, In The Same Fixture During The 2016 / 2017 Season, Gillingham won 2-1, But we lost to Walsall during The 2015 / 2016 Season where both teams were challenging for promotion, Tom Bradshaw and Romaine Sawyers have both moved on to bigger and better things since then, But Walsall still have Former Gillingham Striker Simeon Jackson on there books and Erhun Oztumer is A Quality Player and he is the player that Gillingham need to watch out for throughout the entire match.
Walsall Manager Jon Whitney is under a lot of pressure from Walsall Supporters, and perhaps this has to do with the style of play, or maybe last season’s form has dragged across into this season, but I do see quite a few comments from Walsall Supporters who are consistent in there dismay with Jon Whitney’s current employment at Walsall Football Club, and if Jon Whitney is under pressure then that nervousness and apathy from Walsall Supporters may well transmit itself on to the pitch, In our last away match, Gillingham scored really early against Rotherham United, a goal within three minutes for The Gills against Walsall would be the perfect start, and the pressure from The Walsall Supporters in the stands towards the players on the pitch would increase, I wonder if Jon Whitney was fully backed in The Transfer Market by the board, or, is it simply the case that this is a decent squad that could improve drastically under a new manager ???
Leatherhead won against Billericay Town On Thursday Night and while Liam Nash wasn’t allowed to feature in that 3-1 win, Liam Nash can play for Leatherhead against Wycombe Wanderers if Gillingham choose to cup tie Liam Nash, I had the opinion that Liam Nash will not be allowed to play for Leatherhead in The FA Cup as Gillingham will need as many players available for selection as possible, But I was so pleased for Leatherhead because Billericay Town Manager Glenn Tamplin just assumed that his side was going to progress into The Second Round Of The FA Cup and I am pleased that Leatherhead have managed to cause a slight upset here - both clubs play in The Ryman Premier Division - But Billericay Town are throwing money around to try and get promoted and it is great to see Leatherhead get an fantastic opportunity to travel to Wycombe Wanderers and possibly get the chance to reach The Third Round Of The FA Cup.
So far, traffic hasn’t been too bad and other then having to slow down on The M1, our journey to Walsall has been very good, but it is always better to leave earlier and allow for the additional time to get to an away game, rather then be concerned about making it in time for kick off, I have missed kick off for an away game a few times, Stockport County we arrived at 2.55PM, Bradford City and AFC Bournemouth I have missed kick off and for Bristol Rovers over The Easter Weekend, thanks to Eddie’s Driving and using a few slip roads, we just about made it in time for Bristol Rovers Away, and speaking of matches over The Easter Weekend, Gillingham are at home to MK Dons On Thursday and away to Southend United on The Easter Monday, so our fixtures are decent with no traveling towards The South West.
After getting some sleep in the car on the way up to Walsall, I woke up and we were roughly twenty minutes away from the Bescot Stadium and Diane mentioned that we have not had any travel problems besides having had to slow down for a bit on The M1, I wish we could say that our trip to Blackpool is going to be as easy as our trip to Walsall, But we’re looking at at least six hours on the coach on our way to Blackpool and we’re probably looking at getting back home around 4.30AM in The Morning as well.
We had arrived at The Bescot Stadium at 11.30AM and to make it to Walsall in three hours flat with only one slight traffic delay on The M1 is very good going, As I Mentioned to Karlton, we could have been stuck in one traffic jam for thirty / forty minutes very easily and you never know what the traffic is going to be like on the day, on our way towards The Bescot Stadium, we went past Morrison’s, and Walsall’s Old Stadium Fellows Park was on the same site that Morrison’s currently sits now, obviously I never went to Fellows Park (The Stadium was Knocked Down in 1990) But Diane was trying to think if she had been to Fellows Park before.
We stopped off at McDonalds to get something to eat and drink, and as Me, Karlton and Diane entered McDonalds, A Child saw Diane’s Jacket and said Gillingham with a silent G, and that made me think of Gillingham Town who are playing In The Dorset Premier League, I wasn’t sure on who Gillingham Town are playing against but I will need to have a look at there result later on to see how well they are doing, Diane brought A Cadbury Dairy Milk McFlurry and A Coffee, While I brought A Large Coke, Large Fries and Nine Chicken Nuggets for £5.90, I mentioned to Karlton that I never buy food inside A Football Stadium because food prices are always so expensive, and also, what your getting in-terms of what your paying for isn’t always the best in-terms of quality as well.
After finishing our meals, Me, Diane and Karlton headed back towards the car and Diane took a phone-call and once Diane had finished that phone call, Me and Diane told Karlton the story of when we traveled to Scunthorpe United, and as we approached the entrance to McDonalds, A Father mentioned to his daughter - See these two football fans, they have traveled along way today - and The Little Girl Responded, What, To Go To McDonalds, brilliant response and a response that made us laugh, and as we exited McDonalds, I saw the sign out-side Halfords which mentioned - We Sell Everything - I jokingly said, Does that include three points for Gills, if only we could go into Halford’s Every Saturday and buy three points for The Gills.
It took us just over five minutes to get from McDonalds To The Away Supporters Car Park, and once Diane paid £4 for parking the car, which worked out at £1.33 per person with 1p left over, Diane parked the car in The Away Supporters Car Park and we had arrived at The Bescot Stadium with plenty of time to spare, I made sure I had the belongings on me that I wanted to take with me inside the ground and anything that I wasn’t taking with me was going into the boot of the car, Diane and Karlton did the same-thing, and once we took the belongings we wanted to take with us, Diane locked the car doors, Karlton headed round to The Ticket Booth to buy his Match Ticket, and Me and Diane went into The Old Match-Day Programme Shop.
Me and Diane brought our match-day programme’s for Walsall V Gillingham, and Diane brought an old match-day programme, and I brought Gillingham V Canterbury City In The Kent Senior Cup, which had a few pictures of Steve Lovell inside the programme and Darren Hare was playing up-front for Canterbury City as well, Diane was convinced that another Football League Team played In The Kent Senior Cup and Diane cannot think of who the other team was, I started naming Charlton Athletic and Millwall, I mentioned Crystal Palace because it had to be A Team In The South East Of London who might have been invited as a guest team, I know that Gillingham and Charlton Athletic can only play against each other in the final of The Kent Senior Cup as that was the agreement that both teams had when they re-entered the competition.
Me, Diane and Karlton headed round towards where The Team Coach was going to park and Malcolm Steadman was there and he told us that the team traveled up to Walsall the day before on Friday, But travel arrangements for the first team on Tuesday Night are going to be different as the team are traveling up to Blackpool via train and Malcolm Steadman and the kit staff are traveling to Blackpool from Kent on the same-day as the match, Blackpool away is going to be a very very long journey for us and by the time we get back it is going to be at least 4AM In The Morning.
Gillingham’s First Team Coach Arrived at 13.10PM and We Saw Steve Lovell, Ian Cox and the players get off the team coach, but because of how the barriers were set up by The Players Entrance, we couldn’t really see the players or staff and we would have a better chance of seeing the players after the game, I mentioned to Karlton the time we stood here two season’s ago when Jimmy Walker was Gillingham Goalkeeper Coach and Walsall Supporters packed around our coach to see Jimmy Walker because Jimmy Walker is A Walsall Legend with over 300 appearances to his name, There have been a few players who have played for Gillingham and Walsall, Darren Byfield is one player who comes to mind, and of course Simeon Jackson is another player to have played for both clubs as well.
Once the players and coaching staff headed inside The Players Entrance and made there way to The Away Dressing Room, we headed around towards The Away Entrance and the turnstiles were not open yet and just as we headed around towards The Players Entrance, Me, Diane and Karlton saw Simeon Jackson and we had to get a photo taken with Simeon Jackson, who mentioned to us that scoring the winning goal for Gillingham at Wembley Stadium was one of the highlights of his professional football career, and Simeon Jackson had to head off towards The Home Dressing Room and could not hang around for too long.
The Kings Ferry Coach turned up at 13.30PM and had they turned up five minutes earlier, then a few more Gillingham Supporters would have had the chance to speak with Simeon Jackson, Diane went over towards the coach to double check that we were booked on for Tuesday Night, And Diane confirmed that we were both booked on, 11.30AM for Me From Rainham, Mid-Day For Diane From Priestfield Stadium, that is going to be a long long away trip, but there is good news for Blackpool Supporters as there could well be a change in ownership and I do hope that Blackpool Supporters can see some light at the end of the tunnel and a regime change see’s some enthusiasm brought back to the home supporters at Bloomfield Road - But we will be hoping that Gillingham can pick up all three points against Blackpool - But I do hope that circumstances change for the better for Blackpool Supporters off the field though.
Just a few minutes later, The Away Turnstiles were opened and Me, Diane, Karlton and a few other Gillingham Supporters queued up so that we can enter the back of the away end, Supporters were not searched before entering the ground and Stewards even told Supporters that we can sit or stand anywhere, if only that was the case for the vast majority of away matches, Diane even Tweeted Praising Walsall for allowing supporters to sit or stand anywhere inside the ground and no bag searching before entering the ground, I think away matches should be unreserved seating anyway, supporters can sort themselves out, those who want to be towards the front can sit towards the front of the stand, and those who want to stand towards the back can stand at the back of the away end.
I made my way towards The Refreshments Stand and Brought Myself A 500ML Bottle Of Pepsi for £2.20, Karlton was looking to get something to eat, but the food prices inside the ground were off-putting and he also was trying to save enough money to ensure that he could pay his fair share of the travel costs, With Ticket and Travel Costs coming close to fifty pounds, you would like to think that clubs can ease some of the cost of away days by providing supporters would food or drink vouchers.
Eventually we saw Gillingham’s Team News On Twitter, And Gillingham Lined Up As Follows,,,,,, Tomas Holy, Luke O’Neill, Max Ehmer, Gabriel Zakuani, Connor Ogilvie, Jake Hessenthaler, Sean Clare, Lee Martin, Josh Parker, Conor Wilkinson, Tom Eaves SUBS: Stuart Nelson (GK), Ben Nugent, Mark Byrne, Darren Oldaker, Scott Wagstaff, Elliott List and Greg Cundle - The big surprise was seeing Conor Wilkinson given his first league start for Gillingham for a long long time, and at first, I thought that Gillingham were lining up with a standard 4.4.2 formation, Then I thought that Gillingham were lining up with a 3.4.1.2 Formation as Luke O’Neill, Gabriel Zakuani and Connor Ogilvie were all training together, But then Max Ehmer came across and trained with Luke O’Neill, Gabriel Zakuani and Connor Ogilvie, so we’re clearly lining up with a back four and Tom Eaves is up-front, could Conor Wilkinson and Josh Parker line up alongside Tom Eaves with Jake Hessenthaler, Lee Martin and Sean Clare as a central midfield trio ??? - We will have to wait and see once the match kicks off how Gillingham are going to line up at The Bescot Stadium.
Looking at Walsall’s Match-Day Squad Simeon Jackson wasn’t named in the squad, But Ehrun Oztumer is clearly the main player that Gillingham will need to watch out, A Few Walsall Supporters told us to watch out for Kory Roberts, and Amadou Bakayoko is a good player on his day, and Amadou Bakayoko has scored five goals for Walsall this season, But it is clear for all to see that Ehrun Oztumer is going to be Walsall’s Key Player and Gillingham are going to have to keep two or three players around him at all times.
Looking around the ground, it is difficult to gage what the attendance is going to be, Because The Choice Stand is two tiered and most of The Walsall Supporters were behind the goal and this stand is double in height compared to the other three stands, but the turnout in the back of the away end was excellent, most of us were crammed together in The University Of Wolverhampton Stand and we were standing closer to The St Francis Group Stand, Sometimes if the away following is small, then away fans will be put in the end blocks of this stand, but I do remember Wolves filling two stands at Walsall when they were playing in League One, Walsall’s main rivals being West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City, Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers, These four clubs are all in The Championship and Premier League, so it must be difficult for Walsall to increase the size of there fan base when you have got four huge football clubs in your doorstep.
Anne was interested in participating in The NoirCat League and I mentioned to Diane that so far, I am on course for another promotion and I would be in The Championship if I were to get promoted again this season, Diane was promoted twice because there was such a surge in new membership and Diane ended third last season missing out on promotion by one point, but with the league restructuring Diane was promoted, But you enter all of your predictions before the start of the season and you don’t have to be a member of the league to come along to NoirCat Presentation Night and I came along to see what it was all about before joining, Diane did the same two year’s ago and the fact that Adrian Pennock turned up and we got to speak to him for a good two hours really was one of the best highlights of NoirCat, we have had players turn up before, but to have The First Team Manager turn up was a really nice touch.
The atmosphere was building around The Bescot Stadium and I sent out the following tweet, Five Minutes Until Kick Off - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!!!!!!! and we had a quick look at who The Referee was for this match and The Referee For Walsall V Gillingham Is Andy Haines, Not A Name that comes to mind straight away, but we will see how well Andy Haines Referee’s this match over the course of ninety minutes, Gillingham come into this match in decent form, but despite one defeat in seven matches in all competitions, Gillingham are still in The League One Relegation Zone, The Gills really can do with a win today, and both teams come out of the tunnel ready for kick off and the atmosphere raises in volume inside The Bescot Stadium, and the teams line up in-front of The Main Stand, and after Walsall and Gillingham go through the pre-match hand-shake ritual, The Gillingham Players come on over towards The University Of Wolverhampton Stand where The Gillingham Supporters are situated, both teams will be kicking towards the ends where there supporters are situated in The Second Half, which obviously gives Walsall the same advantage that kicking towards The Rainham End at Priestfield Stadium benefits Gillingham for home games.
Both teams are ready for ninety plus minutes of competitive football, Walsall need a win to pull themselves clear of The League One Relegation Zone, Gillingham need a win to pull Walsall closer to The League One Relegation Zone, and maybe, just maybe, Gillingham can get the result we need to move ourselves out of The Bottom Four for the first time in a long time, fingers crossed that Gillingham can pick up all three points - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FIRST HALF:
And within the first minute of the match, we knew precisely why Erhun Oztumer is going to be Walsall’s Key Player as Jake Hessenthaler prevents Erhun Oztumer from getting on to a threaded through-ball and Jake Hessenthaler shields the ball out of play for A Gillingham Goal-Kick, and Lee Martin has timed his challenge to perfection on The Walsall Creative Midfielder, I remember when Gillingham tried to sign Erhun Oztumer from Dulwich Halmet and Peterborough United beat us to signing him, not for the first time that Peterborough United have done that as well, as Dwight Gayle and Ricky Miller are two players who also opted to go to London Road instead of going to Priestfield Stadium.
Three Minutes Into The Match, and Gillingham have won a throw on in there own half of the pitch and In The Fourth Minute Of The Match, Kieron Morris see’s his driven effort on goal from twenty five yards out blocked by Max Ehmer and Jake Hessenthaler kicks the ball clear, which actually turns into a good pass down the line towards Tom Eaves, who is penalised for his challenge on Kory Roberts when The Walsall Defender wasn’t really going anywhere, it’s one of those kop out decision’s from The Official’s where your delighted when your the defending team getting those decision’s, but infuriated if your the attacking team and seeing your attacking player penalised for closing a player down.
Walsall are still pilling on the pressure on to Gillingham’s Goal, Because In The Sixth Minute Of The Match, Walsall are awarded A Throw On Down The Left Side Of The Pitch and Luke Leahy see’s his short throw on intercepted by Luke O’Neill, who just takes no chances and clears the ball long and down-field to get the ball away from danger, but the clearance is only a temporary reprieve for Gillingham as Kory Roberts takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball forward to Joe Edwards, and The Walsall Midfielder lays the ball off to to Adam Chambers, who passes the ball out-wide to Zeli Ismail down the right side of the pitch, and Zel Ismail has looked to whip in an dangerous low crosses towards Amadou Bakayoko, But Sean Clare is in the right place at the right time to get the ball partially clear and away from danger, however, Zeli Ismail manages to keep the ball in play and The Walsall Winger looks to play the ball back to Erhun Oztumer, But Zeli Ismail goes round the out-side towards the byline and Zeli Ismail’s cross is charged down by Connor Ogilvie at the expense of conceding a corner kick.
And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Ehrun Oztumer has whipped in an dangerous in-swinging cross towards the near post and Luke Leahy headers the ball wide of Tomas Holy’s Left Hand Post, personally, I thought that the final touch came off Sean Clare and that Walsall should have been awarded A Corner Kick, But We’re Eight Minutes into this match and that is the best chance created by either team so far.
Nine Minutes Into The Match, and Max Ehmer times his challenge on Liam Kinsella to perfection, However, In The Tenth Minute Of The Match, I thought that the free kick awarded against Luke O’Neill for his challenge on Kieron Morris was very poor and this was a soft free kick awarded in my opinion.
But In The Eleventh Minute Of The Match, Walsall are still pushing to make the breakthrough and open the scoring, Tomas Holy kicks the ball long down-field for Gillingham and Jon Guthrie wins the aerial challenge up against Tom Eaves and Lee Martin gets on to the loose ball first, but a poor first touch see’s Ehrun Oztumer get on to the loose ball and Walsall have the opportunity turn defence into attack, and Ehrun Oztumer runs forward in possession of the ball and Ehrun Oztumer continue’s his run forward before threading the ball out-wide to Zeli Ismail, and Zeli Ismail is running down the right side of the pitch and Zeli Ismail is one on one with Connor Ogilvie, and Zeli Ismail cuts inside on to his left foot and see’s his driven effort towards goal blocked by Connor Ogilvie and the loose ball falls kindly back into Zeli Ismail’s path, and Zeli Ismail is forced to run wide in possession of the ball as Jake Hessenthaler and Connor Ogilvie are double marking The Walsall Winger, and Zeli Ismail was looking to play the ball back to Liam Kinsella before checking back out-wide, and Jake Hessenthaler sticks with The Walsall Winger and Zeli Ismail see’s his cross charged down by Jake Hessenthaler and Walsall are awarded a corner kick.
And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Walsall create the best goal-scoring opportunity of the entire match, as Ehrun Oztumer whips in an dangerous in-swinging cross towards the near post and Luke Leahy gets the faintest of touches to header the ball across the face of goal at the near post, beating Sean Clare and Max Ehmer in the air and Kieron Morris see’s his scrappy effort on goal brilliantly saved by Tomas Holy on the goal-line and Kieron Morris keeps the ball in play by hooking the ball over his shoulder and back inside the danger zone inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area, Thankfully, Lee Martin is first to the loose ball and kicks the ball long down-field, but Liam Kinsella headers the ball forward for Walsall and Tom Eaves headers the ball clear up towards the halfway line, and pressure from Sean Clare see’s Adam Chambers pass the ball back to Liam Roberts - That goal-mouth scramble could well be the sign of things to come for Gillingham because Walsall have seen Luke Leahy header wide at the near post from a corner kick, and now, Kieron Morris has seen his effort on goal brilliantly saved by Tomas Holy and Gillingham have survived a real goal-mouth scramble.
Thirteen Minutes Into The Match, and Sean Clare is penalised for his challenge on Ehrun Oztumer, And In The Fourteenth Minute Of The Match, Gillingham are looking to cause Walsall problems defensively, Max Ehmer passes the ball forward to Sean Clare on the halfway line - who has played on the right, centre and left in the opening stages of this match - And Sean Clare lays the ball off to Jake Hessenthaler, who plays a short pass forward to Lee Martin, and Lee Martin takes a touch to control the ball before playing the ball out-wide to Luke O’Neill In Walsall’s Final Third, and Luke O’Neill has whipped in an dangerous in-swinging cross towards the far post, But Luke O’Neill’s Cross was too high and too long for one of Tom Eaves or Conor Wilkinson to header on target or back across the face of goal and the ball runs out of play for A Walsall Goal-Kick - Goal-Scoring Opportunities have been difficult for The Gills, and Tom Eaves and Conor Wilkinson have yet to get themselves into the game at the moment.
Gillingham do manage to relieve some pressure building on to there own goal as Amadou Bakayoko is penalised for his challenge on Max Ehmer, But In The Sixteenth Minute Of The Match, Walsall are still on the front-foot and still causing Gillingham problems defensively, Kieron Morris has possession of the ball for Walsall, and he passes the ball centrally towards Ehrun Oztumer, who likes to travel in possession of the ball and despite being double marked, Ehrun Oztumer has a low centre of gravity and he manages to retain possession of the ball before threading the ball through to Zeli Ismail, who looks to whip in an dangerous in-swinging cross first time and Josh Parker manages to make the block, prevent the ball going out of play for a corner kick, and Josh Parker flicks the ball against Zeli Ismail to win Gillingham A Goal-Kick - that gives you an idea of how pushed back Gillingham are at the moment with Josh Parker at Left Back.
And In The Same Minute, Luke O’Neill has managed to whip in an dangerous in-swinging cross towards the back-stick and Liam Roberts at full stretch manages to gather the ball first time despite being under a lot of pressure from Conor Wilkinson, and moments later, a dreadful back-pass from Kory Roberts almost see’s Josh Parker get in through on goal but Liam Roberts just about manages to get to the loose ball and kick the ball long down-field and away from goal, and In The Eighteenth Minute, Amadou Bakayoko is flagged for offside as Walsall look to play the ball over the top of Gillingham’s Defence, Walsall have always been a team who like to retain possession of the ball on the floor, But Amadou Bakayoko Is 6’ 4’ and I think Walsall have got someone up-front who they can go from back to front with long ball’s if they have to, but from what we have seen from Walsall so far, they like to retain possession of the ball on the floor and look to attack in the wide area’s, and try and get Ehrun Oztumer on the ball as much as possible.
Nineteen Minutes Into The Match, and Amadou Bakayoko is penalised for his challenge on Max Ehmer, And From The Resulting Free Kick, Lee Martin has kicked the ball high and long into the heart of Walsall’s Penalty Area and Josh Parker see’s his header towards goal routinely saved by Liam Roberts, and it is from here where Walsall create a very good goal-scoring opportunity as Liam Roberts throws the ball out-wide to Kory Roberts, who takes two touches to control the ball and Kory Roberts has to kick the ball long down-field as Conor Wilkinson is closing him down and Connor Ogilvie wins the initial aerial challenge but the second ball falls kindly to Zeli Ismail as Sean Clare cannot get on to the loose ball and Zeli Ismail runs towards the right side of the pitch, checks back to evade Sean Clare’s attempted challenge and lays the ball off to Ehrun Oztumer, and Ehrun Oztumer was shaping up to shoot and Sean Clare throws himself in-front of the ball to make the block, but Ehrun Oztumer checks back on himself and then threads a fantastic through-ball towards Zeli Ismail who has managed to get in and behind Gillingham’s Defence, and Zeli Ismail has fired the ball across the face of goal and Amadou Bakayoko see’s his effort on goal blocked by Tomas Holy and Jake Hessenthaler is in the right place at the right time to get the ball clear, but Liam Kinsella chests the ball under his control and plays the ball forward to Ehrun Oztumer, who plays the ball out-wide to Zeli Ismail, who see’s his dangerous low cross charged down at the expense of conceding another corner kick.
And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Ehrun Oztumer has whipped in an dangerous in-swinging cross towards the near post and not only has Sean Clare managed to header the ball clear and away from danger, But Sean Clare has managed to get to the loose ball first and draw a foul from  Zeli Ismail to win Gillingham A Free Kick, which relieves the pressure building on to our own goal, And Gillingham have the chance to cause Walsall problems from the resulting free kick, as Lee Martin has stood the ball up towards the far post and Adam Chambers manages to header the ball partially clear and away from danger and Max Ehmer is the first player to react to the second ball and Max Ehmer also see’s his attempted cross back across the face of goal headed clear and away from goal by Joe Edwards and Walsall were awarded a free kick as The Linesman Down The Far Side Of The Pitch had his flag raised for offside.
And From The Resulting Free Kick, Liam Roberts has quickly kicked the ball down the left side of the pitch and Kieron Morris takes one touch to control the ball before going on a driving run forward in possession of the ball, and Kieron Morris see’s his attempted cross charged down by Luke O’Neill and Walsall are awarded A Throw On In Gillingham’s Final Third, And Walsall are still causing Gillingham problems defensively because Kieron Morris throws the ball short to Amadou Bakayoko, who plays a one touch pass out-wide to Kieron Morris, and Kieron Morris passes the ball towards Ehrun Oztumer in an more central position on the pitch, and Ehrun Oztumer was looking to lay the ball off before threading through a disguised pass in-between Luke O’Neill and Max Ehmer towards Amadou Bakayoko, and Tomas Holy was quick to react and Tomas Holy is off his goal-line to dive on to the loose ball to prevent Amadou Bakayoko from being able to get a shot off on goal, honestly, Gillingham have got to watch Ehrun Oztumer very carefully, because he is able to split our defence open with an eye of a needle pass, and I am convinced that Ehrun Oztumer will be playing in The Championship Next Season, because he is that good.
So we’re past The Twenty Minute Mark and if your away from home and you have kept the score-line goal-less then that is always a promising start to the match, Walsall have been on the front-foot, they have created the better goal-scoring opportunities and Tomas Holy has made two very good saves, but there will be a spell in this match where Gillingham are asking questions of Walsall Defensively, and when the goal-scoring opportunities do start going in Gillingham’s Favour, then we have got to score, because from what we have seen in this match so far, Walsall are going to score, and I would not be at all surprised if Ehrun Oztumer opens the scoring himself, or he has assisted the goal-scorer with a clever pass.
Twenty Four Minutes Into The Match, And Walsall almost capitalise on a dreadful error from Gillingham to open the scoring, Max Ehmer plays the ball forward to Sean Clare, who passes the ball back to Max Ehmer as Gillingham have possession of the ball in our own final third, and Max Ehmer passes the ball back to Tomas Holy who takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball out-wide to Max Ehmer as Gillingham just look to keep possession of the ball, and Max Ehmer plays the ball out-wide to Luke O’Neill, who takes a touch to control the ball, however, Luke O’Neill cuts inside centrally to evade the challenges from Kieron Morris and Joe Edwards, and Luke O’Neill then plays a dreadful pass straight into Adam Chambers Path, and Adam Chambers has made the block and the ball runs forward straight into Amadou Bakayoko’s path and Amadou Bakayoko flicks the ball towards Ehrun Oztumer, who takes a touch to control the ball and Ehrun Oztumer, despite being marked by Jake Hessenthaler and Sean Clare still manages to pass the ball through to Joe Edwards, who plays a one touch layoff back into Amadou Bakayoko’s Path, And The Walsall Striker takes a few touches in possession of the ball before dragging his shot wide of Tomas Holy’s Left Hand Post - and Gillingham can consider themselves fortunate not to have been severely punished for that mistake by Luke O‘Neill.
But Gillingham do at least give Walsall something to think about defensively in The Twenty Fifth Minute, Walsall have a throw on down the right side of the pitch in Walsall’s Final Third, and Liam Kinsella throws the ball long down the line and Josh Parker wins the initial aerial challenge and Zeli Ismail flicks the ball on and Gabriel Zakuani headers the ball forwards for Gillingham and as the ball bounces up high off the turf, Adam Chambers headers the ball forward for Walsall and Jake Hessenthaler is well positioned to not only make the block, but to play a good pass forwards to Conor Wilkinson, who tries to take on Jon Guthrie, But Jon Guthrie times his challenge to perfection, however, the ball breaks kindly towards Sean Clare, who goes on a driving run forward in possession of the ball, and Sean Clare continue’s his run forward and with few passing options available, Sean Clare tries his luck from twenty five yards out and you have got to say that Sean Clare wasn’t far away from hitting the target with that driven effort towards goal, Liam Roberts thought that effort was on target for a moment and so did The Gillingham Supporters in the back of the away end.
But Walsall create a very good goal-scoring opportunity In The Twenty Sixth Minute Of The Match, as Liam Roberts kicks the ball long down-field and Amadou Bakayoko wins the aerial challenge up against Max Ehmer to flick the ball on into Kieron Morris’s path, and Kieron Morris takes a touch to control the ball before running into an more central position within shooting territory, and Kieron Morris has the confidence and the ability to throw in a neat step-over and Kieron Morris has cut across the ball and hit a wayward effort wide of Tomas Holy’s Left Hand Post, But I do think that Walsall should have been awarded a corner kick because Gabriel Zakuani threw himself in-front of that shot and I do think that Gabriel Zakuani got a slight touch on the ball, But Tomas Holy was not happy with the defending in-front of him and we were getting more and more nervous in the back of the away end.
And this match goes from end to end with both Gillingham and Walsall having chances to score in The Twenty Seventh Minute, First, It Is Gillingham who are looking to make the breakthrough, as Tom Eaves has possession of the ball for Gillingham down the left side of the pitch and Tom Eaves plays the ball back to Josh Parker, who takes a touch to control the ball, and Josh Parker manages to evade the challenge from Liam Kinsella before clipping the ball out-wide to Luke O’Neill, who plays a first time pass down the line towards Conor Wilkinson inside Walsall’s Penalty Area and Conor Wilkinson see’s his low cross charged down by Jon Guthrie, and the loose ball almost falls into Lee Martin’s Path But Luke Leahy gets to the ball first and kicks the ball against Conor Wilkinson and the ball ricochets into Liam Roberts Path, and that ricochet could have gone anywhere.
And From Here, Walsall look to turn defence into attack as Liam Roberts throws the ball out-wide to Zeli Ismail, who takes a touch to control the ball before going on a driving run forward down the right side of the pitch, and Zeli Ismail cuts inside to evade the challenge from Josh Parker and Zeli Ismail runs into an more central position before clipping a cross-field pass towards Kieron Morris, who manages to bring the ball under his control with a brilliant first touch and as the ball bounces up off the turf, Kieron Morris has hit a dipping volley towards goal which Tomas Holy has been able to gather with ease, Walsall’s Front Four Of Kieron Morris, Ehrun Oztumer, Zeli Ismail and Amadou Bakayoko are all causing Gillingham problems defensively.
Once Tomas Holy had the ball in his hands, Gillingham had a half chance to try and open the scoring as Tomas Holy kicks the ball long down-field and the ball bounces over Kory Roberts Head and Tom Eaves is almost through on goal, however, Liam Roberts is off his line to gather the ball on the eighteen yard line, Kory Roberts is 6’1 but he doesn’t look comfortable competing for the ball in the air and I think that should Gillingham win a free kick then Tom Eaves, Conor Wilkinson, Gabriel Zakuani, Max Ehmer and Connor Ogilvie can cause Walsall problems with anything in the air.
We’re coming up to the half an hour mark now, and Walsall are looking to make the breakthrough, Luke Leahy has possession of the ball in Walsall’s Final Third, and Luke Leahy plays the ball out-wide to Kieron Morris, who takes a touch to control possession of the ball before threading the ball through to Joe Edwards who takes a few touches in possession of the ball, and as Lee Martin is closing Joe Edwards Down, The Walsall Midfielder lays the ball off to Ehrun Oztumer, who takes a touch to control the ball despite being on the deck and Ehrun Oztumer plays the ball out-wide to Liam Kinsella down the right side of the pitch - Gillingham’s Left - and Liam Kinsella continue’s his run forward before passing the ball out-wide to Zeli Ismail, who is being closely marked by Josh Parker, and Zeli Ismail was looking to play a pass, but Zeli Ismail retains possession of the ball and Zeli Ismail pretends to whip in a cross before looking to try and catch Tomas Holy out with a crafty effort towards the far right side of the goal, But Tomas Holy was alert and dived to his left and was able to gather the ball first time - had Zeli Ismail put more power behind that strike then maybe Tomas Holy would have had more difficulty in making the save, but it is another save that Tomas Holy has had to make.
But to give you an idea of just how deep Gillingham are defensively, Josh Parker and Sean Clare are pushed back as additional full back’s and Gillingham at times are lining up with a back six, perhaps we’re conscious of the fact that Ehrun Oztumer is perfectly capable of threading through an eye of a needle pass or capable of scoring an sensational wonder-strike, that we’re trying to deny the space in and behind by allowing Walsall to have the ball in our half of the pitch, against Rotherham United, Gillingham had Sean Clare and Elliott List down the right, and Bradley Garmston and Josh Parker down the left, on that day the tactic was more simplified, stop the crosses going towards Kieffer Moore, But Walsall’s Front Four are all quick and mobile players and there more difficult to mark then going up against A Towering Centre Forward, even though Kieffer Moore Was The League One Top Goal-Scorer going into that match.
Thirty One Minutes Into The Match, and Walsall’s dominance in play is staring us in the face, Gabriel Zakuani times his challenge on Amadou Bakayoko to perfection, but the ball breaks to Kieron Morris who takes one touch to control the ball and another to whip in an dangerous in-swinging cross towards the far post and there was a coming together between Zeli Ismail and Josh Parker, and despite Walsall Supporters claims for A Penalty Kick, Referee Andy Haines points for A Goal-Kick For Gillingham as Josh Parker shields the ball out of play - I wrote down in My NotePad - Possible Penalty - But it wasn’t A Stonewall Penalty and when you are in doubt then no penalty kick being awarded is the correct decision.
Walsall are throwing the kitchen sink towards Gillingham’s Goal, Luke O’Neill times his challenge on Kieron Morris to perfection, but the ball isn’t sticking for Gillingham up top as Luke Leahy intercepts the ball and the ball breaks into Joe Edwards Path, and Joe Edwards passes the ball back to Adam Chambers, who passes the ball out-wide to Liam Kinsella, and Liam Kinsella takes a few touches in possession of the ball before whipping in an dangerous in-swinging cross towards the far post in an attempt to try and pick out Amadou Bakayoko, But Tomas Holy is off his line to punch the ball clear and out of play for A Walsall Throw On.
And in the aftermath of Tomas Holy punching the ball out of play with a very good punch to clear the danger, Lee Martin is down injured requiring treatment, and this stoppage in play allows Steve Lovell to relay any instructions he has towards the players, because Walsall are on top, they are the team who are looking increasingly likely to open the scoring and something needs to change for The Gills, because if we see Walsall open the scoring then it is going to be very difficult to see Gillingham getting anything out of this match at The Bescot Stadium.
Thankfully, Lee Martin was OK to continue, however with Lee Martin on the sidelines Gillingham are temporarily down to ten men, thankfully, a foul by Amadou Bakayoko on Max Ehmer relieves the pressure on Gillingham’s Defence and Lee Martin is waved back on to the pitch again, But the foul tally just keeps rising against Gillingham, because Conor Wilkinson and Tom Eaves are penalised for there challenges on Liam Kinsella and Kory Roberts respectively, and with Gillingham winning two throw on’s in quick succession then these stoppages and breaking up play is beneficial and stops Walsall’s relentless attacking pressure on to Gillingham’s Goal.
In The Fortieth Minute, Jake Hessenthaler and Conor Wilkinson link up very nicely for Gillingham, and Conor Wilkinson tries to skilfully go past Kory Roberts but the nutmeg doesn’t work but at least Conor Wilkinson is trying to make something happen, And In The Forty First Minute, Lee Martin is flagged for offside, Gillingham have slowly grown into this match, Liam Roberts hasn’t been severely tested in-between the sticks, but Walsall aren’t in the ascendency because of the stoppages in play, and it looks like Gillingham will be going in at the break with the score-line at 0-0, and to be honest, considering the number of saves that Tomas Holy has to make in this match so far, then I will gladly take 0-0 at the break.
However, In The Forty Fourth Minute Of The Match, Gillingham do a lot better then 0-0, because despite Walsall pilling on the pressure on to Gillingham’s Goal, It Is Gillingham who take the lead, Zeli Ismail passes the ball square to Adam Chambers in Gillingham’s Half Of The Pitch As Walsall are looking to open the scoring, and Luke Leahy takes a touch to control the possession of the ball and Luke Leahy passes the ball back to Adam Chambers, who takes a touch to control possession of the ball before passing the ball square to Luke Leahy, and Luke Leahy skilfully goes past Jake Hessenthaler’s attempted challenge and Luke Leahy tries to do too much and Jake Hessenthaler nips in to intercept the ball, and Sean Clare takes a touch to control possession of the ball before threading the ball down the line towards Tom Eaves, who does brilliantly to go past Jon Guthrie and Tom Eaves continue’s his run into an central possession on the pitch and Tom Eaves manages to evade Adam Chambers attempted challenge before threading through a fantastic through-ball in-between Joe Edwards and Kory Roberts, and Liam Kinsella has made an horrendous mistake and Conor Wilkinson shows great composure with a one time finish past the advancing Liam Roberts to give Gillingham a very unlikely lead at The Bescot Stadium.
And Every Gillingham Supporter in the back of the away end was jumping up and down and celebrating what you have got to say was an completely unexpected goal and it was good to see Conor Wilkinson score his first league goal for Gillingham This Season, great touch by Tom Eaves to go past Jon Guthrie and a fantastic pass in-between Joe Edwards and Kory Roberts to assist Conor Wilkinson’s goal, but you have got to say that was an dreadful error from Liam Kinsella, and I do think that Walsall look weak defensively, and before kick off, Walsall have conceded Twenty Four Goals In Sixteen Matches, Both Gillingham and AFC Wimbledon are in the bottom four and they have conceded less goals then Walsall, But Walsall have scored more goals then Gillingham and AFC Wimbledon, I don’t know, because from what we have seen so far in this match, Walsall do look weak defensively.
In the First Minute Of Stoppage Time, I thought that Jon Guthrie had fouled Conor Wilkinson and for some reason, Referee Andy Haines had awarded The Free Kick In Walsall’s Favour, But Walsall are awarded A Free Kick In A Very Promising Position On the Pitch, as Kieron Morris is one on one with Max Ehmer and Kieron Morris skilfully goes past Max Ehmer and Max Ehmer leaves a trailing leg which Kieron Morris has gone over and Walsall are awarded A Free Kick, OK, It Was A Foul And Walsall should be awarded A Free Kick, But I don’t think Max Ehmer deserved to be booked for that challenge - A Booking which was going to have dire consequences later on in this match - And From The Resulting Free Kick, Kieron Morris’s dangerous in-swinging cross was too close to Tomas Holy who plucks the ball out of the air and dives on to the deck to relieve the pressure building on to Gillingham’s Goal.
And after two minutes of stoppage time, Referee Andy Haines blows his whistle for Half Time and Gillingham are winning 1-0 away from home at The Bescot Stadium and The Walsall Supporters were clearly shown there displeasure and frustrations at the half time interval, while we as Gillingham Supporters were elated and delighted with The 1-0 score-line, Did Gillingham deserve to be winning 1-0 ?, absolutely no way, are we delighted that Gillingham are winning?, of course we are delighted.
HALF TIME: WALSALL 0 - 1 GILLINGHAM
I sent the following tweet at half time on Twitter,,, WALSALL 0 - 1 GILLINGHAM - Conor Wilkinson's goal is the difference between both sides, smash and grab sums up the first half of this match., I also asked where Nicholas was inside the ground because I haven’t seen him, While Diane decided to queue up to get something to drink from the refreshments stand and I mentioned to Diane that I wasn’t going anywhere so Diane decided to leave her Match-Day Programme in her seat.
Dave came over to where I was standing, and Dave asked Me if we were staying behind after the game so we could participate in his interview for Dave’s University Assignment, I mentioned that because, Me, Diane and Karlton have traveled via car that we will be staying behind after the game and we can answer the questions that Dave wanted to ask us.
We spoke about the match in general, and Max Ehmer was one player we spoke about, whenever Adrian Pennock and Peter Taylor played Max Ehmer as a wide centre back in a back three / back five formation, Max Ehmer struggled and you could see that he isn’t completely natural in those positions, but we have seen an improvement in Max Ehmer’s performance levels and he is playing well consistently as A Centre Back In A Back Four, we’re not expecting Max Ehmer to play as A Ball Playing Centre Back, John Egan and Simon King could do that, but Max Ehmer has his limitations and we’re now playing to his strength’s, It also helps having Gabriel Zakuani back from International Duty because his experience is invaluable.
Another player we spoke about who has improved recently is Conor Wilkinson, A Bright Substitute Appearance where Conor Wilkinson was pulled back late on and this saw Leyton Orient go down to ten men, scored his first goal for Gillingham in that crazy 7-5 win against Reading U21’s In The Football League Trophy, put in his best league performance against Bury at Priestfield Stadium Last Saturday when he came on at half time, and now Conor Wilkinson has scored his first league goal of the season to give Gillingham the lead away at Walsall, But up until that goal, Tom Eaves and Conor Wilkinson were both struggling to get themselves into the match because Walsall were dominating the game, Tomas Holy has made five saves and also punched the ball clear and away from danger, and Ehrun Oztumer looks like he is either going to score or assist a goal for Walsall, because if Walsall are going to get this match back on to level terms, then Ehrun Oztumer is going to be play a key part in Walsall scoring the equaliser.
Dave decided to head back to his seat and I mentioned that I will see Dave after the game, Anne and I had the same thought process regarding this match, If Walsall equalise, then Walsall will turn this match on it’s head and win 2-1, therefore, it is absolutely essential that Gillingham double there lead and make the score-line 2-0, this is what Gillingham were able to do at The New York Stadium against Rotherham United and replicating the same feat will give Gillingham an great opportunity to pick up all three points, The Next Forty Five Minutes Are Going To Be Crucial, they are going to be nerve wrecking, but let’s hope that Gillingham can hold on or extend there lead against Walsall - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SECOND HALF:
Jon Whitney and Steve Lovell have both stuck with the same starting line up’s they named at the start of the match, With Both Manager’s likely to opt to wait and see what happens over the next fifteen minutes before deciding to make there first substitutions of the match, I mentioned to Anne that Elliott List might come on as his pace will stretch team’s, and if Gillingham are under the cosh then Elliott List’s pace can relieve the pressure building on to Gillingham’s Goal, I can see Elliott List coming on at some point in The Second Half.
The Start Of The Second Half is a stop and start opening few minutes, which probably suits Gillingham more then it suits Walsall, Tom Eaves is penalised for his challenge on Adam Chambers, and from the resulting free kick, Adam Chambers has kicked the ball high and long into the heart of Gillingham’s Penalty Area and Max Ehmer headers the ball away from goal down the left side in Gillingham’s Own Final Third, And Connor Ogilvie kicks the ball against Zeli Ismail to win Gillingham A Throw On In Our Own Final Third.
Walsall are slowly starting to regain possession of the ball, but a long clearance down-field from Connor Ogilvie has to be headed out of play by Liam Kinsella as Tom Eaves is putting The Walsall Right Back under some pressure, and I do think that this Walsall Defence look second best to anything in the air, should Gillingham have the chance from a set play, then I do think that Gillingham can cause Walsall some problems from A Free Kick Or Corner Kick.
And In The Forty Ninth Minute Of The Match, Jake Hessenthaler see’s his dangerous low cross blocked and cleared by Kory Roberts and Gillingham are at least trying to go for A Second Goal, I mentioned to Diane, who had just come back from the refreshments stand, the same-thing that Anne and Myself were talking about at half time, If Walsall equalise, then they will go on and win the game 2-1, so therefore, it is essential that Gillingham try and double there lead, because 2-0 puts Gillingham in a very strong position to pick up all three points.
Fifty One Minutes Into The Match However, And Walsall create the best goal-scoring opportunity of The Second Half, Luke Leahy runs forward in possession of the ball for Walsall, and Luke Leahy passes the ball out-wide to Kieron Morris down the left side of the pitch in Gillingham’s Half, And Kieron Morris takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball into an more central position towards Adam Chambers, And Adam Chambers takes a touch to control the ball before clipping the ball out-wide to Liam Kinsella, and Liam Kinsella takes a touch to control possession of the ball before going on a driving run forward, and Liam Kinsella continue’s his run forward before passing the ball out-wide to Zeli Ismail, and Zeli Ismail is looking to either go past Josh Parker or play the ball through to Liam Kinsella on the over-lap, But Zeli Ismail runs into an more central position on the pitch and Zeli Ismail continue’s his run into an more central position, going past Jake Hessenthaler and looking to go for goal as Lee Martin and Sean Clare both look to try and prevent Zeli Ismail from getting a shot off on goal, But Zeli Ismail has the awareness and the vision to play the ball through to Luke Leahy, who steps over the ball and allows the ball to run through to Kieron Morris, who see’s his initial effort on goal blocked by Luke O’Neill, but the ball ricochets back into Kieron Morris’s path, and Kieron Morris’s effort on goal deflects off one of Conor Wilkinson or Max Ehmer and the ball runs across the face of goal and neither Ehrun Oztumer or Amadou Bakayoko can get to the deflected ball at the far post as the ball runs out of play for A Walsall Corner Kick - We couldn’t see the other end of the pitch very clearly, so shot deflected wide was what I had written in My Notepad - and With Walsall Attacking The Tile Choice Stand where there home supporters are situated, I think we can expect to see Walsall create a lot of goal-scoring opportunities.
Thankfully, Walsall do not create a meaningful goal-scoring opportunity from the resulting corner kick, And that is because Gillingham manage to turn defence into attack, as The Gills are looking to try and hit Walsall On The Counter Attack, Luke O’Neill has cleared the ball long down-field, and I thought that Adam Chambers had climbed all over the back of Tom Eaves and no foul was given, but the ball runs through to Lee Martin down the left side of the pitch, and Lee Martin see’s his low cross charged down by Liam Kinsella and Gillingham are awarded A Throw On Down The Left Side Of The Pitch In Walsall’s Final Third.
But that counter attack from Gillingham was a rare attacking opportunity for The Gills, Because Walsall are looking to try and get themselves back on to level terms in The Fifty Fourth Minute Of The Match, Adam Chambers has possession of the ball for Walsall on the halfway line, and Adam Chambers passes the ball square to Luke Leahy, and Luke Leahy takes a touch to control the ball before threading the ball through to Ehrun Oztumer, who takes a touch to control the ball before threading the ball in-between Luke O’Neill and Max Ehmer to Kieron Morris on the over-lap, and Kieron Morris has fired in an dangerous low cross and Tomas Holy has dived low to save and hang on to the ball at the first attempt, And In The Same Minute, Tom Eaves is booked for his challenge on Kory Roberts, I don’t think that was even a foul in the first place and for Tom Eaves to be shown A Yellow Card is very very harsh in my opinion.
And A Minute Later, Tom Eaves is penalised for another challenge on Kory Roberts and with two fouls in quick succession, I think Tom Eaves is walking on thin ice, and I was mentioning to Diane and Anne that it is time for Tom Eaves to be substituted and maybe Elliott List can come on and use his pace to stretch Walsall’s Defence and Elliott List can cause Walsall’s defence a few problems with his pace.
And In The Fifty Seventh Minute, It takes a great save from Tomas Holy to keep Gillingham’s Slender 1-0 lead in-tact, Walsall are currently on top and Luke Leahy keeps the ball in play down the left side of the pitch in Gillingham’s Final Third, and Luke Leahy plays the ball back to Adam Chambers, who takes a touch to control the ball, and Adam Chambers was trying to thread the ball through to Erhun Oztumer, but Adam Chambers has to pass the ball back to Kory Roberts on the halfway line, and Kory Roberts takes a touch to control possession of the ball and Kory Roberts passes the ball out-wide to Zeli Ismail, who just about manages to keep the ball in play and Zeli Ismail takes a few touches in possession of the ball before threading the ball through to Amadou Bakayoko, who is being closely marked by Connor Ogilvie, and Jake Hessenthaler manages to nip in to intercept the ball only for Jake Hessenthaler to lose out Amadou Bakayoko, and The Walsall Striker runs into an more central position on the pitch before passing the ball square to Adam Chambers, who plays a first time through to Amadou Bakayoko, who has managed to get in and behind Gillingham’s Defence, and Amadou Bakayoko’s first time effort on goal is brilliantly tipped over the crossbar by Tomas Holy and I really did think for a moment that Walsall had equalised.
And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Ehrun Oztumer has passed the ball short to Kieron Morris, who has managed to pass the ball to Adam Chambers on the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, and Adam Chambers has played a one touch layoff square to Joe Edwards, and The Walsall Midfielder has had no other choice but to pass the ball back to Kory Roberts as Gillingham have kept there shape and discipline, but this is only a temporary reprieve for Gillingham, as Kory Roberts runs forward in possession of the ball, and Kory Roberts passes the ball forward to Liam Kinsella, who takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball out-wide to Zeli Ismail, who takes a touch to control the ball, and Zeli Ismail takes on Josh Parker and runs into an central position on the pitch and Zeli Ismail is through down the right side inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area, and Zeli Ismail plays a lofted pass over the top towards Luke Leahy, who brings the ball down with his first touch, and Luke Leahy manages to pick out Kieron Morris with a pass across the face of goal and Kieron Morris takes one touch to control the ball and another to fire a driven effort towards goal and Gabriel Zakuani and Sean Clare between the two of them make the block at the expense of conceding another corner kick.
And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Kieron Morris has whipped in an dangerous in-swinging cross which has gone over Luke O’Neill and Connor Ogilvie’s heads and the ball has ricocheted off Tom Eaves and Amadou Bakayoko manages to get to the loose ball and Amadou Bakayoko allows Kory Roberts to take over, But Kory Roberts pass to Joe Edwards is intercepted by Lee Martin and there is the possibility of a potential breakaway for Gillingham and Lee Martin continue’s his run forward in possession of the ball and Lee Martin tries to pick out Conor Wilkinson with a pass down the right side of the pitch, but Lee Martin’s attempted pass isn’t accurate enough and Adam Chambers has managed to cut that pass out and Kory Roberts does brilliantly to evade the challenge from Lee Martin, and Kory Roberts runs forward in possession of the ball before prodding the ball through to Kieron Morris, who plays the ball back to Luke Leahy, and Luke Leahy has threaded through a brilliant through-ball to Amadou Bakayoko, and The Walsall Striker is one on one with Tomas Holy and Amadou Bakayoko takes one touch to control the ball and another to hit a snap-shot effort wide of Tomas Holy’s Right Hand Post, Had The Walsall Striker gone for goal first time then Amadou Bakayoko would have at least tested Tomas Holy in-between the sticks.
After that effort on goal from Amadou Bakayoko, Steve Lovell makes his first substitution of the match as Mark Byrne comes on for Tom Eaves, this substitution is right for two main reason’s ONE: Tom Eaves has been booked and he would have surely been sent off, AND TWO: Mark Byrne will shore things up defensively for Gillingham and line up alongside Jake Hessenthaler and Lee Martin in the middle of midfield, I do think that Elliott List will come on at some point during this match, especially if we need someone up-front who can stretch Walsall’s defence and catch Walsall out on the counter attack as the home side will surely push more players forward to try and get an equaliser.
Jon Whitney does in-fact make a double substitution as Tyler Roberts and Reece Flanagan come on to replace Joe Edwards and Kieron Morris, Tyler Roberts is A Striker and he will surely line up alongside Amadou Bakayoko in attack, With Mark Byrne coming on for Tom Eaves and Walsall bringing on another striker, naturally, Gillingham are going to be defending for the vast majority of the rest of this match, but there needs to be some threat going in the opposite direction as well though.
Sixty One Minutes Into The Match, and Tomas Holy kicks the ball long down-field and there is almost a defensive mix up between Kory Roberts and Liam Roberts and The Walsall Goalkeeper does manage to eventually gather the ball, but that was poor communication between defender and goalkeeper, I am sure that Kory Roberts is relieved to have seen Tom Eaves substituted, because Tom Eaves was causing Kory Roberts a lot of problems with anything in the air, and in the same minute, Reece Flanagan is penalised for his challenge on Jake Hessenthaler and that free kick relieves some of the pressure building on to our own goal.
However, In The Sixty Third Minute Of The Match, Walsall win themselves another corner kick, Walsall are moving the ball about very nicely as Liam Kinsella passes the ball forward to Tyler Roberts, who takes one touch to control the ball before passing the ball out-wide to Zeli Ismail, who takes on Connor Ogilvie and gets to the byline and pulls the ball back across the face of goal and Gabriel Zakuani is in the right place at the right time to divert the ball out of play for A Walsall Corner Kick, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Ehrun Oztumer has whipped in an dangerous in-swinging cross and Max Ehmer has headed the ball clear, and Adam Chambers is on to the loose ball and Adam Chambers see’s his initial effort on goal blocked by Gabriel Zakuani and the follow up effort from Tyler Roberts fails to hit the target, scrappy, very scrappy, But Gillingham have managed to survive.
Sixty Five Minutes Into The Match, and I thought that the foul awarded against Conor Wilkinson was very poor and that Kory Roberts had thrown himself to the floor, and while Conor Wilkinson does at least win the ball back from the resulting free kick and manage to win A Throw On For Gillingham, It’s Walsall who are on the offensive, Liam Kinsella wins possession of the ball from the resulting throw on from Gillingham, and Liam Kinsella passes the ball back to Liam Roberts, who passes the ball forward to Kory Roberts, And The Walsall Centre Back runs forward in possession of the ball before passing the ball short to Adam Chambers, and Adam Chambers threads the ball through to Luke Leahy on the over-lap, and Luke Leahy plays the ball through to Tyler Roberts on the over-lap, and Tyler Roberts has whipped in an dangerous low cross that has gone across the face of goal and Ehrun Oztumer cannot quite manage to keep the ball in play and Gillingham are awarded A Goal-Kick - And Gillingham survive yet again as Walsall are looking to threaten in and behind Gillingham’s Defence.
Sixty Nine Minutes Into The Match, And Lee Martin is booked for a very reckless challenge on Tyler Roberts when I thought that Lee Martin was lucky to stay on the pitch, I would substitute Lee Martin now, Elliott List, Scott Wagstaff and Ben Nugent are all players who could come on for Lee Martin, But It Is Walsall, Not Gillingham who are making a substitution as Daniel Agyei comes on to replace Amadou Bakayoko, and from the resulting free kick, Reece Flanagan has stood the ball up with a high and hanging free kick and Max Ehmer has headed the ball clear and Gillingham have managed to clear there lines.
But In The Seventy First Minute, Gillingham go down to ten men, Kory Roberts has possession of the ball for Walsall just out-side Walsall’s Penalty Area, and Kory Roberts passes the ball square to Jon Guthrie, and Jon Guthrie takes a touch to control possession of the ball before passing the ball out-wide to Luke Leahy, who takes a touch before passing the ball back to Jon Guthrie, and Jon Guthrie takes a few touches before running forward in possession of the ball, and Jon Guthrie runs forward up to the halfway line and Jon Guthrie threads the ball through to Daniel Agyei, who manages to evade the challenge from Jake Hessenthaler and Max Ehmer has slid in and missed the ball and taken out Daniel Agyei and Referee Andy Haines shows Max Ehmer A Second Yellow Card and Gillingham are down to ten men now - The Second Challenge deserved a booking, but I thought The Yellow Card for the challenge on Kieron Morris at the end of the first half was very very harsh.
And Walsall have the chance to equalise from the resulting free kick, as Tyler Roberts has fired in an dangerous cross / shot into the heart of Gillingham’s Penalty Area and Connor Ogilvie has managed to header the ball clear, but the loose ball runs into Ehrun Oztumer’s path, and Ehrun Oztumer passes the ball back to Reece Flanagan, who takes a touch to control possession of the ball, and Reece Flanagan clips in a high and hanging ball towards the back-stick and Luke Leahy and Josh Parker both challenge for the ball in the air and the ball drops kindly to Tyler Roberts, who’s first time effort fails to hit the target by some considerable distance and Gillingham survive - But we know full well that the rest of this match is going to require a backs against the wall performance from The Gills.
Seventy Three Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham win A Throw On Down The Left Side Of The Pitch In Walsall’s Final Third, and Connor Ogilvie throws the ball short to Lee Martin, who kicks the ball against Kory Roberts to win Gillingham A Corner Kick right in-front of the end where The Gillingham Supporters Are Situated, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Lee Martin has whipped in an dangerous in-swinging cross and Conor Wilkinson is penalised for his challenge on Liam Kinsella straight away - much to the frustration and irritation to us as Gillingham Supporters, Because With Max Ehmer sent off and the number of free kicks given against Gillingham, The Refereeing Of This Match From Andy Haines comes across as very bias and one sided.
Seventy Six Minutes Into The Match, And Adam Chambers is penalised for his challenge on Lee Martin, But Walsall were completely dominating possession of the ball in the passage of play that eventually led to Lee Martin winning the free kick, But any hopes of the pressure being relieved from our own goal is more in hope then expectation, because Liam Kinsella plays the ball forward towards Daniel Agyei, who plays the ball out-wide towards Zeli Ismail down the right side of the pitch in Gillingham’s Final Third, And Zeli Ismail has drilled in an dangerous low cross and Gabriel Zakuani takes no chances and kicks the ball into touch at the expense of conceding a corner, Thankfully, Ehrun Oztumer’s dangerous in-swinging cross is too high and too long for anyone in A Walsall Shirt at the back-stick to header on target or back across the face of goal and Gillingham are awarded A Goal-Kick.
But The Corner Kick Tally just continue’s to rise as Connor Ogilvie makes an important block to concede another corner kick for Walsall, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Ehrun Oztumer’s dangerous in-swinging cross towards the near post is headed clear, and when Liam Kinsella gets on to the loose ball and whips in an high and hanging cross towards the far post, there were plenty of penalty appeals from Walsall Supporters down the opposite end of the pitch and those penalty appeals were waved away and Daniel Agyei is penalised for his challenge on Jake Hessenthaler and Gillingham are awarded A Free Kick, anger and frustration from Walsall Supporters, Sarcastic Cheers and some celebrations from The Gillingham Supporters in the back of the away end - there is still plenty of time remaining for Walsall to score an equaliser, which is what everyone in the back of the away end was concerned about.
Eighty One Minutes Into The Match, And Scott Wagstaff comes on for Conor Wilkinson, who gets a great reception when he is substituted as it is Conor Wilkinson’s goal that separates both sides, Josh Parker has moved up-front and Gillingham will line up with Scott Wagstaff, Jake Hessenthaler, Mark Byrne and Lee Martin in midfield in what is A 4.4.1 Formation, Elliott List is still remaining as a possibility as Elliott List can come on and use his pace to stretch teams, And Lee Martin could well be substituted as he picked up that Yellow Card earlier on in the match.
Eighty Two Minutes Into The Match, And Erhun Oztumer is penalised for his challenge on Luke O’Neill and Gillingham just have no way of relieving the pressure, as Walsall and constantly on the front-foot and on the offensive, and Zeli Ismail tries to pick out Luke Leahy with an dangerous in-swinging cross towards the back-stick, But There Was Luke O’Neill to header the ball clear and out of play for A Walsall Throw On, But Walsall are still looking to make the breakthrough and we’re into The Eighty Fourth Minute Now, Luke Leahy throws the ball back to Ehrun Oztumer, who plays the ball back to Reece Flanagan, and The Walsall Midfielder was looking to switch play to the opposite flank before passing the ball square to Adam Chambers, and Adam Chambers, passes the ball forward to Ehrun Otzumer, who tee’s up Tyler Roberts to try his luck from distance, and Tyler Roberts initial effort on goal is blocked, and the ball ricochets back into Luke Leahy’s Path, And Luke Leahy see’s his low dangerous in-swinging cross blocked by Sean Clare and Walsall Have Won A Throw On Down The Left Side Of The Pitch In Gillingham’s Final Third.
And From The Resulting Throw On, Luke Leahy has thrown the ball long into the heart of Gillingham’s Penalty Area and Mark Byrne has won the initial aerial challenge but Mark Byrne has headed the ball back across the face of goal, thankfully, Scott Wagstaff was in the right place at the right time to control the ball with his chest and boot the ball clear and away from danger, But Gillingham have got no-one forward and Kory Roberts is on to the loose ball, and Kory Roberts takes a touch to control possession of the ball and The Walsall Defender passes the ball square to Reece Flanagan, who takes a touch to control the ball, and Reece Flanagan runs forward in possession of the ball before looking for various passing options as Gillingham have everyone back defending, As The Gills are trying to line up with two solid banks of four, and Reece Flanagan passes the ball square to Adam Chambers, who takes a touch to control the ball, and Adam Chambers plays a neat one / two with Ehrun Oztumer before squaring the ball to Reece Flanagan, and Reece Flanagan is looking around for someone to pass the ball to and Reece Flanagan looks one way and another before threading the ball through to Daniel Agyei, who manages to turn past Connor Ogilvie and Daniel Agyei see’s his first time effort on goal saved by Tomas Holy.
Gillingham are doing everything possible to keep Walsall out, which is easier said then done, Liam Kinsella and Luke Leahy are playing as wingers and you have got Tyler Roberts, Daniel Agyei, Ehrun Oztumer, Reece Flanagan, Adam Chambers and Zeli Ismail all in midfield or attacking roles as Walsall are throwing everyone forwards to try and find the equaliser, Trying to play against Walsall Eleven V Eleven is difficult enough, because Walsall have always been a decent passing side, but when you have the numerical disadvantage, then Walsall are even more difficult to play against.
Gillingham are just trying to get the ball away from our own goal, and Sean Clare has tried to play the ball over the top for Josh Parker to get on the end of, But Josh Parker is running out of steam and the ball runs out of play for A Walsall Goal-Kick, and once the ball goes out of play, Ben Nugent comes on for Luke O’Neill to provide Gillingham with additional physicality in defence, Connor Ogilvie is at Left Back, Sean Clare Right Back and the formation remains the same with 4.4.1, Hopefully, Gillingham can hang on for the win.
Eighty Seven Minutes Into The Match, And Scott Wagstaff manages to win A Corner Kick For Gillingham - Brilliant From Scott Wagstaff - But Gillingham have got no intention of trying to go for a second goal as Lee Martin plays the ball short to Jake Hessenthaler, who forces Liam Kinsella to knock the ball out of play for A Throw On, And From The Resulting Throw, Connor Ogilvie throws the ball short to Jake Hessenthaler, who manages to win another throw on off Liam Kinsella, but the third time Gillingham try and hold the ball into the corner, Walsall are awarded a throw on, but that little spell of keeping the ball in the corner ran down the clock for a little bit.
Eighty Eight Minutes Into The Match, and Tomas Holy is quick off his line to dive on to a long ball over the top, But Walsall had the chance to equalise in The Eighty Ninth Minute Of The Match, Reece Flanagan goes on a driving run forwards in possession of the ball and Gillingham are backing off and backing off and from twenty five yards out, Reece Flanagan has tried his luck from distance, and Reece Flanagan has blazed his effort well over Gillingham’s Crossbar, The Gillingham Songs and The Last Waltz Chant was clearly being chanted from the back of the away end and we were closing in on three valuable points for The Gills.
The Fourth Official Put His Board Up AND FIVE ADDITIONAL MINUTES OF ADDITIONAL TIME!!!!!!!! - Is the length of time that Gillingham have left in this match to try and held on for the win, the atmosphere from behind the goal where The Walsall Supporters were situated raised in volume and we were anticipating everything and the kitchen sink to be thrown towards Gillingham’s Goal, And Walsall are looking to cause Gillingham Problems Down The Right Side Of The Pitch, Thankfully, Luke Leahy overruns the ball out of play and Gillingham are awarded a defensive throw on, And From The Resulting Throw On, Gillingham do manage to clear there lines, But Walsall are still on the offensive, and Walsall are looking to pile on the pressure down the right side of the pitch, as Liam Kinsella plays the ball through to Zeli Ismail on the over-lap, and Zeli Ismail stands the ball up towards the back-stick and Tomas Holy takes no chances and punches the ball clear and away from goal as Gillingham are doing everything we possibly can to try and hang on to all three points.
Walsall have moved Jon Guthrie up-front and Kory Roberts has tried to kick the ball long down-field as Walsall are looking to knock the ball long and Scott Wagstaff has headed the ball clear and the second ball drops kindly into Ehrun Oztumer’s path, and Ehrun Oztumer tries to thread the ball through to Luke Leahy on the over-lap, and Sean Clare has come across to shield the ball out of play for A Gillingham Goal-Kick, And When Tyler Roberts is penalised for his challenge on Lee Martin, a huge cheer erupted as Gillingham are awarded a free kick, we’re slowly but surely getting there
And Gillingham have the chance to double there lead in the closing stages of the match as Walsall are pressing for an equaliser, Jon Guthrie is allowed to travel forward in possession of the ball for Walsall unchallenged as Gillingham are trying to keep there shape defensively and Jon Guthrie plays a long pass down-field and Gabriel Zakuani manages to header the ball clear and away from danger, and the second ball falls kindly to Ehrun Oztumer, who manages to get the ball under his complete control and Ehrun Oztumer plays the ball forward to Tyler Roberts, who takes a few touches in possession of the ball and Tyler Roberts passes the ball square to Reece Flanagan in an central position on the pitch, and Reece Flanagan losses out to Scott Wagstaff and the ball ricochets into Mark Byrne’s Path, and Mark Byrne takes a touch to control possession of the ball before continuing his run forward in possession of the ball and Mark Byrne lays the ball off to Scott Wagstaff, and the counter attack is on for Gillingham because Scott Wagstaff is now one on one with Kory Roberts, and Scott Wagstaff goes round the out-side of The Walsall Defender and Scott Wagstaff see’s his effort on goal brilliantly saved by Liam Roberts at his near post and Gillingham have been awarded a corner kick - Had Scott Wagstaff passed the ball back across the face of goal then Josh Parker would have surely hit the target at the very least, but the corner kick does allow Gillingham to run down the clock.
There was just time left for the corner kick to be taken as Scott Wagstaff passes the ball short to Lee Martin and Referee Andy Haines blows his whistle for full time and the relief and the celebrations (and the relief) can finally begin, The Chants Of GILLS, GILLS, GILLS, THE LAST WALTZ And STEVIE LOVELL’S BARMY ARMY were chanted loud and clear from the back of the away end, and the players showed there appreciation towards the supporters, and the supporters showed there appreciation towards the players, this win was smash and grab combined with an exceptional organised defensive display from The Gills.
FULL TIME: WALSALL 0 - 1 GILLINGHAM
I made sure I had everything on me and I wanted to get a drink from the refreshments stand, but the refreshments stand was closed, and I saw Dave after the match who needed Me, Diane and Karlton to be interviewed for his Sports Journalism Assignment, and Me, Diane and Karlton were heading towards The Gillingham Team Coach, and I mentioned that Gillingham have completely mugged Walsall off, it felt like a smash and grab win, the stats (which I saw later on and not at the time), showed that this was a smash and grab, but at the same-time, Gillingham are the away team, we’re not going to dominate possession and Walsall should be creating more chances as the onus is on them to attack, but once Gillingham went down to ten men, it was about making sure that we remained as tight and as compact as possible.
That win for Gillingham and results elsewhere has seen Gillingham move out-side The League One Relegation Zone - OK, The 2017 / 2018 Season can finish now, that will do very nicely - and while we were waiting for the players to come out of the players entrance, I answered Dave’s Question regarding Steve Lovell’s Appointment As Gillingham Manager and that was the only question I had to answer, and Dave asked Diane for her thoughts on Steve Lovell’s appointment as Gillingham Manager as well, Dave wanted more of a demographic and he would have liked responses from Female Gillingham Supporters, Older Supporters, Younger Supporters and try and get a wide spectrum of different opinion’s, I think the appointment of Steve Lovell as Gillingham Manager until the end of the season is a fantastic appointment, and since being given the job on a permanent basis, Steve Lovell has continued to build on his run of results by winning his first match as Gillingham Manager.
Me and Dave then spoke about looking back to who we wanted to see replace Adrian Pennock as Gillingham Manager and plenty of time has passed since Adrian Pennock has been sacked and Steve Lovell has been appointed as Gillingham Manager, and I am not going to pretend and say that Steve Lovell was my first choice, because I would be lying if I said that, But One Defeat In Seven Matches, Now One Defeat In Eight Matches, those stats stack up very nicely in Steve Lovell’s Favour, but the one thing that Steve Lovell needs to tick off that check list is to win at home in the league, Steve Lovell’s overall home record is decent, with two wins, two draws and one defeat from five matches, but the two wins have come against Leyton Orient In The FA Cup and Reading In The Football League Trophy, A Home League Win is needed, but away from home, wins against Peterborough United, Rotherham United and Walsall makes it three league wins in a row for Gillingham under Steve Lovell’s management.
I did My Interview On Gills In The Blood TV With David and I appreciation making a guest appearance for the game against Walsall, I also know the difficulties and the challenges of video recording and uploading video content so fair play to anyone who does video content, because the time it takes to make sure that the audio and visuals are working properly must be at least four, five or six hours to make sure that the video clip is working properly.
Dave was doing the video clips for Gills In The Blood and Dave asked me for my thoughts on the game, I replied by saying that, Very Good Defensively, Gillingham are under the cosh and Conor Wilkinson scores just when we needed a goal just before half time and Tomas Holy was My Pick For Man Of The Match with the saves he has had to make throughout the entire match, We then spoke about how this was a typical away performance, and I replied mentioning that Gillingham Need To Line Up With Defensive Solidarity, but we are also lining up with Clare, Garmston, Parker, Eaves and List and Gillingham are getting results away from home.
In Response to Dave’s Final Question Regarding Steve Lovell’s Permanent Appoint, I am also delighted that Steve Lovell has got the job full time now, One Defeat In Eight and Five Wins In Those Eight Matches now and we go into the next match against Blackpool off the back of a gritty, hard fought win against Walsall and the players will be full of confidence heading into that match on Tuesday Night, It’s not often I make a guest appearance on Gills In The Blood, So I am going to give Gills In The Blood A Mention, Here Is His Twitter Profile: @GillsInTheBlood - And Here Is his YouTube Account - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbflskH_HEjWJdN1CcdYWsQ/videos
I got to show Steve Lovell the match day programme from The Kent Senior Cup where Steve Lovell played for Gillingham in the early 90’s, But Dave goes one better, he actually gets to interview Steve Lovell and Paul Scally for his Sports Journalism Assignment and I hope that Dave gets extra credit for Interviewing Gillingham’s First Team Manager And The Gillingham Chairman for his assignment, David got to speak with Tom Eaves briefly before Tom Eaves got on the team coach, and speaking of the team coach, Chairman Paul Scally went on to the team coach to shake every player by the hand for that battling, gritty and determined performance against Walsall.
And We spoke about Tom Eaves, who has already matched what I think Tom Eaves’s goal tally was going to be when we signed him, because I thought that Tom Eaves would score in-between five and ten goals a season, but he would assist another ten himself by flicking the ball on and it would be Conor Wilkinson who was getting himself on the score-sheet, But Tom Eaves has been exceptional for Gillingham This Season, and speaking off Conor Wilkinson, he is getting there slowly but surely, A Good Substitute Appearance Against Leyton Orient In The FA Cup, Scored against Reading In The Football League Trophy, Put In An Impressive Substitute Appearance against Bury and now scored his first league goal against Walsall, We’re seeing more and more from Conor Wilkinson, who is a young striker himself who at least acknowledged that he needs to put in more work on the football pitch and put himself about, and Conor Wilkinson at least understands that he needs to do more and we have already seen an improvement from Conor Wilkinson under Steve Lovell’s Management then what we were seeing earlier on in the season.
Both Dave’s were not going to Blackpool On Tuesday Night and they wished us luck for the long long trip to Blackpool from Gillingham in mid-week before we said take care, and just as The Team Coach Left The Ground, they almost forgot Sean Clare, who had to dash back towards The Team Coach, and luckily for Sean Clare, he was fast enough to get to The Team Coach in time, we were that close to offering Sean Clare a lift back to Kent, and this reminded us of the time where The Team Coach left Stuart Nelson behind at Colchester United for The Football League Trophy Game a few year’s ago and I think Luke Cadwell offered Stuart Nelson a lift that night.
We headed back towards The Car and I did try and see if there was A Drinks Machine From Walsall Train Station and I tried The Hotel near the ground, but there was nothing, I switched seats with Karlton, as he needed to charge his phone up, I had plenty of spare batteries on me so I can always switch batteries if I run out of power, Diane did stop off at A Petrol Station and I asked Diane if she wanted anything to eat or drink, But Diane was OK and didn’t need any food or drink, and I brought A 500ML Bottle Of Coca Cola and A Cadbury Caramel Bar for £2.20, while Karlton managed to buy a drink from The Costa Drinks Machine, which wasn’t working properly, Food And Drink Inside Football Stadiums and Service Stations are usually quite expensive, and once we got our food and drink, Me and Karlton were back in the car and we were on our way back to Gillingham Again.
I took to Twitter to send the following tweet, FULL TIME: WALSALL 0 - 1 GILLINGHAM - WHAT A RESULT!!!!!!! - Feel free to ask me any questions you have about today's match. and I Re-Tweeted Luke O’Neill and Bradley Garmston’s Tweet’s as well as Re-Tweeting Tweets From Dave, who praised Gillingham’s Collective Performance against Walsall, While Luke confirmed that there was 355 Gillingham Supporters In The Away End, Ben And Kay were loving the away win at Walsall and the fact that Steve Lovell has got his first win since being appointed as Gillingham Manager, and Nicholas Uploaded the stats from the match, stats that Diane was convinced were untrue, especially the three shots stat, Because Diane believed that Gillingham had more efforts on goal then that.
I sent the following tweet to James and Brad, What A Win That Was For The Gills!!!! - Smash and grab but also a very good defensive display from Gills Today., and I sent What A Sensational Win For Gillingham Today to eight of my followers, and I saw on my time-line that Gillingham Town had managed to win 3-1 away from home against Blanford United, So I sent the following tweet to Gillingham Town’s Twitter Account, Nice to Gillingham and Gillingham Town win on the same day - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!, I also sent another tweet to one of my followers and I sent the following, The perfect smash and grab away performance from The Gills Today, got lucky at times, But Gills were also very solid defensively., While Julian’s All You Need Is Lovs Tweet with a picture of Steve Lovell deserved to be re-tweeted.
David Annand had also posted the following tweet, League 1 before Steve = P12 W1 D4 L7 GF6 GA16 PTS7 - with Steve = P6 W3 D2 L1 GF8 GA5 PTS11 - What a turnaround with the same players. - 3 away wins & scored in all 6 games. - Thank you Steve & up @TheGillsFC - A Great Tweet that deserved to be re-tweeted and those stats show just what an incredible turnaround things have been at Gillingham Football Club under Steve Lovell’s Management, Gillingham Goalkeeper Coach Glen Johnson Had Tweeted The Following,,,, Superb character from the boys today. Down to ten men, backs against the walls. Sometimes you’ve gotta enjoy defending. It was a battle. Love an #awayday win & cleansheet!, And Saddlers Stats had tweeted the following stat, 21 attempted shots today. The last time we had so many was against Crawley in October 2014 (23). We lost that 1-0 too. - And I mentioned to Diane that had Simeon Jackson played against Gillingham then you could see him scoring the equaliser, as Former Players usually do score against Gillingham.
Josh Had Tweeted, WHAT A DAY, And I responded with the following tweet, Five Wins For Steve Lovell in Eight Matches As Gillingham Manager and only one defeat in those eight games as well., And Rob mentioned that Gillingham were now out-side The League One Relegation Zone, and I responded back mentioning the following, Yep, End The 2017/2018 Season Right Now, look at where Gills were before Lovell took over, Gills were likely to be in League 2., I then Re-Tweeted Tweets From Tom and Gabriel Zakuani, but Vital Walsall had reported that there was fighting amongst Walsall Supporters inside The Bescot Stadium and things got worse out-side the ground as well, what a mess were the three words that ended the tweet, I think when you look at this Walsall Squad, Kieron Morris and Ehrun Oztumer are Walsall’s best players and Ehrun Oztumer should be in The Championship, But this isn’t the same squad that was challenging for promotion with Gillingham in The 2015 / 2016 Season, Tom Bradshaw and Romaine Saywers have both left the football club, and Walsall have lost four or five additional players who were perhaps integral to that side as well.
I sent the following tweet to Rocket-Man, Good win for Port Vale Today., as Port Vale won 1-0 against Barnet, and Rocket-Man responded back mentioning the following, Was a tough game to watch, was a typical last on The Football League Show Type, both teams were awful that said would rather play bad and get three points then playing well and getting nothing, I then asked Nicholas who did he think were Gillingham’s Three Best Players Today ??? And Nicholas Responded Back Saying That, I think that;’s a tough call for today’s game as the whole team did well together! I think I’d go with Holy, Ogilvie and Wilkinson but that’s in no particular order, Zakuani and O’Neill could easily be in there as well.
Gary had tweeted that the last time that Gillingham won three away games on the spin was our League Two Championship Winning Season and Four Away Wins also last occurred in our Championship Winning Season, but the more interesting stat is the fact that Gillingham have not led A Home League Game at half time, But Gillingham were 1-0 in our last three away matches at the break, I then responded to Neil’s Question, as Neil asked me who I thought was Gillingham’s Man Of The Match and I responded back with the following answer, Tomas Holy, Because Holy has made at least 5 saves to keep Gills in this match, honourable mention to Wilkinson for the winning goal.
I then Re-Tweeted A Few Tweets From My Fellow Gillingham Supporters, and I Re-Tweeted This Tweet From Henry, Literally whenever we get a result anywhere away from home opposition fans say this - Enjoyment factor coming back to Gills, and Walsall Supporters were complaining that Gillingham were the worst team they have seen at The Bescot Stadium, and I told Diane this and Diane wasn’t impressed at all with that comment, because Gillingham had to dig deep with ten men on the pitch and we did brilliantly to held on for the win and secure all three points.
Gills In The Blood Tweeted The Following, P6 W3 D2 L1 Clean Sheets 2 Form WDLWDW Eleven Points From Eighteen, That’s Why Steve Lovell was given the job, and I Re-Tweeted That Tweet and so did quite a few Gillingham Supporters and I Re-Tweeted Sean Clare’s Tweet, and here is one player I really do hope that Gillingham can hold on to until the end of the season because Sean Clare has been very impressive for Gillingham.
We stopped off at South Mimms Services at 20.30PM as this allowed us to get something to eat and drink and Diane needed a rest having done all the driving, and while we were at the services, Diane brought a snack from Subway, Karlton brought A Boxed Meal From KFC, And I Brought A Bacon Double Cheese-Burger, Small Chips and A Large Coke for £8.15 From Burger King, Food And Drink inside service stations are very expensive, I tried to get in contact with Stewart to tell him the result, but he was driving so had no time to talk.
After finishing our meals, we headed back to the car at 21.10PM and made our way back to Gillingham, I Re-Tweeted Dave’s Tweet regarding his interviews with Steve Lovell and Paul Scally, and we need to try and find out if Dave gets extra credit for interviewing The Gillingham First Team Manager and Gillingham Chairman, I hope Dave gets extra credit, because that would be cool.
Gillingham had uploaded A Photo Of The 355 Gillingham Supporters in the back of the away end at Walsall and Dartford won 4-1 against Gloucester City and Dartford are pushing for automatic promotion into The Conference National, and if that were to happen then there will be five Kent Teams In The Conference National which would be an incredible achievement, I think Dover Athletic are still top of The Conference National and there is every chance that Dover Athletic will be in contention for promotion into The Football League, Maidstone United, Bromley and Ebbsfleet United are also having very good season’s this season as well.
We arrived back at Gillingham at 22.15PM and as we passed Chatham Dockyard, I mentioned to Karlton that Gillingham were originally looking to build there new stadium opposite The Police Station and there would have been A Train Station built and the old railway line would have been revived, but with ASDA built on the same site that is no longer possible, But there will be A Mill Hill Train Station built on the same site as where Gillingham are currently looking to build there new stadium, And A Train Station is absolutely essential for the new stadium to be a success.
Diane parked out-side Gillingham Train Station and as Karlton was low on money, he could not afford his share of the fuel costs and Karlton will pay Diane when we met up ahead of The Oldham Athletic Match, We Said C Ya To Karlton before heading towards Rainham and the trip back hasn’t been too bad, it helps that Gillingham have won which makes the trip back home a more pleasant one, and Diane dropped me out-side My House at 22.35PM, And I paid my share of the fuel costs which was £15, and Diane added that she wouldn’t have driven to Blackpool even if this match was on A Saturday because of the length of distance that we would have to travel, and with two away games in quick succession, even if they were both local, there would be the likelihood that one of these matches would have to be traveled to via coach because of the wear and tear on the car.
Because Diane wasn’t feeling so great, I said cya to Diane and hoped she gets better in time for The Blackpool Game, Blackpool and Oldham Athletic are the next two matches coming up, and if Gillingham can pick up four points from these two matches then that would be great, but six points out of six would be superb, great win for Gillingham against Walsall, and it is essential that Gillingham build on this result with results against Blackpool and Oldham Athletic - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
