Arena Puebla Report! 9/18/2017

Princesa Sugehit, Marcela and Skadi vs Zeuxis, La Comandante, and Dalys

Who’s who?

Skadi is the only masked woman on the tecnico team wearing black and purple, Princesa Sugehit is wearing gold like normal and has blonde hair while Marcela has purple hair and is wearing black and white. 

On team Rudo only Zeuxis is in a mask wearing a shirt that has 84 on the back, La Comandante is in black and cargo pants while Dalys is in green. 

How’s the match?

Great! I can’t speak for the women in the match, but I can assume they really want to impress by the performances given here. Marcela in particular had some great spots and is probably the main person to shine other than the obvious duo in Sugehit and Zeuxis who don’t seem to be done with their feud. It was obvious going into this match that Sugehit would want to prove that Zeuxis win over her wasn’t going to keep her down. 

This was a better than par women’s match. Hopefully they will continue to play above par and bring more eyes onto the Luchadora division of CMLL. If they can keep having matches like this people will have to pay attention. My highlight of this match would have to be this great backbreaker by Marcela. Zeuxis and Sugehit were both great in this match, but obviously both were better showcased in their mask vs mask match from Anniversary when it was just the two of them. 

Stuka Jr., Stigma, & Esfinge vs NGD(Sansón, Cuatrero & Forastero)

Who’s who?

Stuka Jr. in blue and black, Stigma in black and red while their 3rd Esfinge is in all white.

NGD... are almost impossible to tell apart for newcomers. This image I made for them for Anniversary shows you what they have on their forehead and general mask designs. 

How’s the match?

Good, it felt like a good combination of 2 different matches we got at Anniversary. You have NGD doing much better than they did vs the heavyweight team that featured Marco/Diamante on Saturday. I’d say this doesn’t really reach the heights that the Stuka Opener did, also despite not being in love with NGD vs Marco/Azul/Valiente from Saturday, that match still might be better. With Marco and company pulling out all the stops. 

Still it’s nice to see NGD pull out the win here, even if it’s vs a lower booked team. Esfinge and Stigma not exactly the bullet proof duo that Marco/Azul are. Some great moments in this match, but there were 2 or 3 times where there was miscommunication on spots.

Ultimo Guerrero, Satoshi Kojima and Negro Casas vs Caristico, Flip Gordon and Dragon Lee

Who’s who? 

Ultimo is in green and black with long hair, Kojima is in orange and black, while Negro Casas is in his plain black gear like always.

Caristico is in all white, Dragon Lee has a red mask on while Flip Gordon is the sole maskless man on his team.

How’s the match?

It’s a more rushed version of the fun, but light and weightless match 4 of these men were in on Saturday. The addition of Dragon Lee and Negro Casas gives it some new moments, but really this is just a lesser match that these guys had at Anniversary. It’s very much a bone thrown to the Puebla crowd, but there's not much meat on this bone and if you saw the Anniversary match this is completely skippable. Kojima even won the fall the same way he did at Anniversary... it’s a fun sequence, but we just saw it. Same goes with 2 of the Ultimo/Flip spots. 

Gran Guerrero vs Niebla Roja, CMLL Anniversary rematch

Who’s who? 

Roja lost his mask at Anniversary, Gran Guerrero didn’t. That should help differentiate the two.

How’s the match?

As with the next show rematches from PPV’s go... it’s not the epic confrontation they had at PPV. It does however still feel like a main event. It had some repeat spots, but it didn’t feel as wholesale copy and paste as what we got in the match right before this. Niebla Roja didn’t seem as heartbroken as Sugehit did earlier in the night about no longer having a mask. Though he was Angel de Plata before Niebla Roja and likely wasn’t as attached. 

While this match pales in comparison to the match these had at Anniversary... it should! That was an epic mask vs mask main event... this was just a rubber match. It served it’s purpose and continued to make Gran Guerrero seem like a rudo threat to any of the top tecnico’s of CMLL. He does feel a little naked though not having any gold. He could go after Niebla Roja who is CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship, CMLL is sorta loose with their weight restrictions. would probably be classified as a heavyweight champion, which would dictate he go after Marco Corleone. 

Who knows if he will go after a belt. Another good option for him to keep his momentum rolling would be winning this year's Leyenda de Plata which has yet to happen. CMLL has skipped it in previous years, but not often. They could end up giving it to Niebla Roja as a consolation prize for losing his mask, though honestly the honor feels above Roja atm. 

Final thoughts :

The women’s trios easily stole the show with the other 2 trios highlighted here feeling like lesser versions of what we got from Anniversary, but that’s kinda expected. The main event was fun too and continued to make Gran Guerrero look strong moving forwards. Hopefully CMLL has ideas on how to keep the shine on Gran Guerrero going into 2018. Leyenda de Plata would be a good idea, but they might want to give that to someone who doesn’t have a huge notable win this year, like Gran does with the Anniversary Main Event. I wouldn’t be surprised if Puebla knew this show would probably just be mostly a rehash of the PPV they bought over the weekend as the arena was pretty sparsely populated.

Volador Jr., Juice Robinson and Matt Taven vs Euforia, Gran Guerrero and Rush

Who’s who?

On tecnico side we have 1 Mexican talent Volador Jr. in his yellow trunks and knee pads, while Juice with brown dreads from NJPW is in white/maroon trunks and Matt Taven is in red gear all 3 without masks.

Los Guerreros are in black/green with Gran in trunks while Euforia is in pants. Their 3rd being the maskless rudo Rush from Los Ingobernables.  

How’s the match?

It was interesting... not great, but seemed to plant the seed that Volador Jr. wasn’t really trusted by the outside talents that will be fighting vs him on September 1st in the Gran Prix. This felt like a lesser version of the main event we got last friday. 

Diamante Azul vs Marco Corleone for the CMLL World Heavyweight title 

Who’s who?

Diamante Azul is in a mask wearing all blue while Marco Corleone is maskless and in mostly red attire. 

How’s the match?

This is a weird feud that came out of nowhere and now that Marco successfully defending it might be done? Seems like adding fuel to the fire of the International Gran Prix. Giving these two who are in it more of a reason to target and be mad with one another in that match. It was a decent match, but felt like anything other than conclusive.

Blue Panther Jr, The Panther and Soberano Jr. vs Kraneo, Olimpico and Morphosis

Who’s who? 

Olimpico is without his mask all this match and is wearing blue pants with a black do rag and black tank top like top. Morphosis is wearing grey/purple pants and starts with a mask, but loses it. I think it’s just an entrance attire mask that didn’t get taken off before the match started. While Kraneo is in a purple bodysuit and has a skull like mask. 

On the good guy side we have Blue Panther Jr and his brother The Panther in the signature panther mask design. Their 3rd is young up and comer Soberano Jr. in blue and silver. 

How’s the match?

The panther brothers rarely disappoint and this is no different. Kraneo is fun as always and as the biggest guy on the roster his size always adds a fun element to his matches. I particularly like how quickly he used the size advantage to get a fall here. It fits well for him and didn’t seem cheap, just making it evident that he is a huge threat. Like a critical strike of sorts, just catching Soberano Jr. off guard early. This is probably the best of the three trios I’m highlighting tonight and a big reason for that is it wasn’t as rushed as the next two. 

Euforia, Gran Guerrero and Sam Adonis vs Angel de Oro, Niebla Roja Johnny Idol

Who’s who? 

Gran and Euforia are both in black/green attire which is their regular Los Guerreros colors.  The way to tell them apart is that Gran’s mask have points coming off his mask while Euforia’s is smooth. Euforia is also in full pants, while Gran Guerrero is in shorts. Their 3rd is maskless gringo, Sam Adonis who has air painted pants. 

On the good guy side we have Angel de Oro in black and gold, his brother Niebla Roja who’s in red and silver, their third is gringo tecnico Johnny Idol who like Adonis is also maskless. 

How’s the match? 

It suffers from some early domination by the heels, where it starts as a brawl and kinda lingers as a brawl longer than I’d prefer. One it picks up though it gets pretty fun briefly before the rushed end see’s Gran just foul away a win again. I know CMLL is saving a more conclusive finish to Roja/Gran for their mask match at CMLL Anniversary, but it gets tiring seeing each of their matches end in a mask or low blow foul. I’d prefer they keep them separate if this is what we should expect seeing them face off before their mask vs mask match. 

Caristico, Mistico and Marco Corleone vs Ultimo Guerrero, Negro Casas and Diamante Azul

Who’s who? 

Caristico and Mistico are dressed pretty identically, the best way to tell them apart tonight is that Caristico has his black shirt on the whole bout while Mistico is shirtless throughout. Their 3rd is Marco Corleone who is a large white guy who wears no mask. 

On rudo side we have Ultimo in green and black, Negro Casas in the black trunks he always wears and Diamante Azul in his blue and silver. Azul isn’t really a rudo, so this is a bit of a weird team for him to be on.

How’s the match?

Good, but it’s a little brief for a main event match. This should have gone a few minutes longer and the matchup is a little too dominated by Azul for my tastes. Though, it makes sense as Azul cut a promo after the match and made it seem like he would be coming for Marco’s CMLL Heavyweight title. That helps explain why it was such a one note match all mostly being about Marco being so targeted by Azul from the beginning to the end of the match. While this match seemed to end short, it was nice that it didn’t end in a foul or countout. 

Wednesday we are suppose to get CMLL Anniversary matches announced, I might make a post about that as it should be good news. Azul/Rush seems likely, but we won’t know until we know.

Arena Puebla Report! 7/17/2017

Caristico, Euforia, and Diamante Azul vs Misitco, Volador Jr. and Pierroth

Who’s who?

On the poster and Youtube description it says Rush, but I assume he got injured or was sick. So his alternate was Mistico which is a natural fit being Pierroth’s next son. Still his inclusion might confuse some because he and Caristico dress too similar! Have a fight guys, it’s confusing and someone should change their look. 

Caristico has red eyes and that’s normally the best way to tell them apart, but for some reason Mistico’s pants have red trim which isn’t helpful at all. Pick a different accenting color! Caristico is teaming with Euforia in green/black Los Guerreros colors while Diamante Azul is wearing Blue as always.

On the other side we have Maskless Pierroth, his son Misito and the young unmasked man and 2017 Universal Champion Volador Jr. Another way to tell Mistico from Caristico would be that Caristico has a black shirt on for the first round. 

This is part of a tournament CMLL is holding, but it’s really not a big deal and just an event they are holding in Puebla as an attraction their. It’s a dynamic shifter like Incredible Pairs... which is why the teams each have 1 rudo with 2 tecnicos. 

How’s the match?

Fun, but it felt very house show-y which is par for the course for Arena Puebla most nights. The only matches that are immune from it are normally the title matches. Still Mistico/Caristico have really built a good chemistry together since Caristico came back. Here’s hoping Mistico(II) becomes La Sombra(II) or something as it would stop this Mistico/Caristico confusion and Ingobernables need to get their ranks up to 3 people to be a serious stable in CMLL no Offense to the duo or Pierroth and Rush. 

Niebla Roja vs Ultimo Guerrero

Who’s who?

Niebla Roja(Red Mist) is obviously the masked man in red while Ultimo Guerrero is the maskless leader of Los Guerreros.

This is another chapter in their long rivalry that started about 2-3 months ago when Roja left Los Guerreros high and dry refusing to attack his real life brother Angel de Oro in trios action. You can see Angel de Oro in this match acting as Roja’s corner man.  

How’s the match?

Good, much better than their other recent bouts. These two are obviously building to a blow off match so this feels a little like batting practice. Ultimo showed he can go last Friday when he and Volador Jr. clashed in the Universal Tournament Finals. So this feud will be a proving ground for Roja, does he have what it takes to be a big singles tecnico for CMLL? Or will he fall back down the ranks and become a stooge again? 

PS I’ll be going a little lighter on these recaps during the G1 Climax, but I will still at least highlight 1 match from each CMLL show. I’ll go back to highlighting 3 matches from each show after the G1 Finals.

Los Revolucionarios del Terror(Dragón Rojo Jr. & Pólvora) with Vangellys vs Ángel de Oro, Stigma, Titán

Basic description of those involved :

We start with Rojo Jr. wearing red/orange/yellow attire like his stablemate. Best way to tell them apart is that Rojo has long black hair coming out the back of his mask. They are teaming with the older Vangellys who has bleach blond(grey?) hair and no mask.

Team Tecnico starts with Angel de Oro in the ring vs Rojo. Angel is wearing black with gold wings on both his mask and pants. Stigma in the pink attire and Titan in the all gold attire.

How's the match? It was okay, but pretty basic stuff. The best part of the match was probably the 3rd fall which is a really fun spin on Los Revolucionarios del Terrors normal finish.

Carístico, Dragón Lee, Mistico vs Cavernario, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas

Basic description of those involved :

Rudos are really easy to tell apart. Cavernario is dressed as a caveman/barbarian, Negro Casas is much older and wearing just black trunks while Mr. Niebla in the Orange and Black mask with matching pants.

On the tecnico team we have Dragon Lee in black which has been his regular get up recently. Then we have Mistico(II) and Caristico(who use to be Mistico), whenever these two team up they are pretty close to one another attire wise. Caristico though has red eyes on his mask and in the early goings is wearing a black top where as Mistico early on is wearing a sleeveless gold hoodie.

Mistico is also wearing white arm sleeves and has a white compress on his back... to also help tell them apart.

How's the match? Again another solid match, but one where you're just waiting for the Dragon Lee/Negro Casas bits. No offense to the Mistico duo, but this match isn't great for them. Both slipping and botching once or twice.  Still, the Negro/Lee story is very intriguing and perhaps Lee will be the final man to go Mono a Mono with Negro at a CMLL Anniversary show? If Negro can still go 20-30 minutes, I'd love to see it.

Atlantis vs Hechicero(c) 2 out of 3 falls for the NWA World Historic Light Heavyweight Championship

Basic description of those involved :

Only two people so this one is pretty easy. Atlantis is in his signature white mask, with fish on the front, along with a black/Blue singlet. His corner man seen previously in the night is Titan.

Meanwhile the champion and rudo Hechicero has black pants, and a brown/gold/black mask. His cornerman seen in the previous match is Cavernario.

How's the match? Atlantis and Hechicero can both go, but this match isn't the best of either man's recent history. Still, Hechicero does his signature spots while Atlantis shows his technical prowess. 

A major botch does happen though, as somewhere in the 3rd fall Hechicero does a running shooting star press. Which lands with his knee catching Atlantis in the face. The rest of the match has Atlantis dripping blood from his nose. Luckily it happened late into the fight, so they didn't have to deal with it the whole time.

Note : These were not the only matches on Monday, but the ones I felt deserved to be highlighted.
