everyone knows dragonball/dragonball z, but let me introduce you to my favorite toriyama series: Dr. Slump

dr. norimaki created arale-chan (the one with the hat, obvs). she's a robot, and the "most perfect girl" robot, but she's very near sighted, doesn't have a belly button (much to her consternation), and ridiculously strong, short-tempered, and generally adorable.

dr. slump, outside of old die-hard anime fans from the 90s tape-trading days, never made much of a splash in the West, which is a shame, because i think it's his best work. so many other series were influenced by dr. slump, including azumanga daioh, yotsuba, nichijo, and more. i used to cosplay arale-chan back in the day.

These two were the first characters I ever learned how to draw and there was a time where it seemed like the man who created them was just as ageless and immortal as they are.

After almost thirty years of Akira Toriyama and his works being a consistent part of my life, it never occurred to me that there would be a day when he would no longer be here. But I guess that's part of growing up and I feel like there's irony in him still teaching me those kinds of lessons even after passing.

I couldn't bring myself to draw them sad the way I've been since I heard the news because if there's one thing Toriyama's stories taught me is to always face the world with a smile, even when things are painful or uncertain. Of all his many lessons, that one was always the most important to me.

I just wish I could have thanked him in person.
