In the past, if someone were to come up to you and tell you that you’d be a part of the One Piece Live Action main cast in the future, you would’ve probably laughed in their faces despite your wishful thinking.
At that time, you were content with your work, doing short theatre plays with companies or gaining minor roles in musicals. Everything changed when you landed the role for the one-woman show Fleabag for a limited time on London’s West End after the leading actress underwent emergency surgery for an appendectomy. You only acted as the sex-obsessed mess of a woman for about three weeks, but it was enough time for people to notice you, to really see you.
You believed your career had reached its pinnacle when you were cast as Katherine Howard in Six: The Musical in London. Your name had become somehow well-known in the musical theatre world, and you had a small but dedicated fan base who liked uploading edits of you being a dork during the Megasix on YouTube and TikTok.
Months later, you were bound to play as Fantine for Les Miserables when COVID abruptly struck, and you were dismayed that your job was ripped from you so abruptly. Your best friend, the sweetest person on earth, insisted on you moving in with her in fear that you’d be evicted from your apartment.
Months passed, and you eventually found a small way to help your friend pay rent by offering singing and acting lessons online to musical-aspiring teenagers. Since you had gained many followers from your earlier work on social media, it didn’t surprise you when the classes became sold out.
Your friend also convinced you to create a YouTube channel for you to upload videos of yourself (sometimes joined by her) where you watched and commented shitty movies, followed DIY tutorials just for the fun of it, performed covers of your favorite songs, and just generally vlogged your life (along with reactions to Taylor Swift’s (From The Vault) songs).
At first, you thought it was pretty stupid, but you were delightfully proved wrong when your videos harbored over 200k-300k views on a bad day, so you found no reason to stop as COVID-19 continued, growing to gain a little over five hundred thousand followers. Your reactions were often used for TikTok audios or clips, so you found your popularity growing and evolving during that year.
You believed yourself to be a general, simple woman. People liked you because you were elegant and levelheaded, although you could sometimes be chaotic. You also had a subtle sense of humor that many found charming. But mostly, you grew a steady fan base because your videos and presence comforted countless young adults and teenagers.
You were an optimist and a reassuring one, so during the times when COVID was so prominent, people sought refuge from the monstrosities of the world in your videos, where you seemed to connect with them even though you were on the other side of the screen.
However, everything changed somewhere in 2020-2021. That evening, your best friend got home from work with excitement practically oozing out of her every pore. You and your best friend were avid anime watchers and manga readers, so you couldn’t help the face you made when she told you that One Piece was getting a live-action.
Although you were skeptical, your friend practically insisted you send an audition tape. You grimaced at that. It was well-known that live anime actions were almost always corny and cringeworthy compared to the original work, and people never liked them. You had learned that much from Death Note and a couple of others. However, your best friend convinced you with this argument:
“If it’s that bad, then at least you’ll gain more followers out of the memes that people will make, and if it’s good, you’ll still get famous anyway!”
Eventually, you sent a video of you performing one of the lengthy monologues from Fleabag to your agency and simply hoped for the best. Your friend was practically rooting for you to get the role of Anastasia, one of the first integrants of the Straw Hat crew, joining before Sanji and after Usopp. You adored her as she greatly reminded you of your late mother, although you would be happy with any role.
Somewhere in November 2021, you remember a lot of screaming and crying. When you try to look back on it, all you remember is the happiness you felt when you received confirmation of the role of Anastasia. You were practically over the moon, and you and your friend celebrated inside your small apartment. You were entirely alone, just two drunk girls dancing and cheering, until one of the neighbors knocked on the ceiling with a broom.

y/nsfanclub.02, AAAAAAAA SO EXCITED FOR THIS I ACTUALLY CANT BELIEVE IT
⤷ starl6ighwnb, LIKE FR IM GNAWING AT THE BARS OF MY ENCLOSURE THIS IS INSANE
user8392y3r927y, HELLO YOUR GRACE ANASTASIA
inakigo, Congrats!!!!!!!!
taz_skylar, 🔥🔥🔥
The One Piece fan base dearly loved the character of Anastasia, a well-mannered, bubbly, upbeat, fashion-loving duchess who always spoke in a Transatlantic accent but also had a quick wit and a bit of a sweet tooth. Anastasia’s dream was to become the most dangerous pirate to ever grace the seas and prove everyone who doubted her wrong.
Of course, with a big character came a big responsibility.
Sometimes, insecurity nearly got the better of you. You had to fill huge shoes, and there were many people to convince and impress. However, your love for this project was bigger than the gnawing uncertainty on the back of your neck, so you continued strongly until the end of Season One, finding comfort in your cast mates and the countless people who counted on you and, most importantly, believed in you.
Oda handpicked you, and that argument alone was enough to shoot any insecurities away.
Well, needless to say, people loved you!
Critics acclaimed your portrayal of the character, as well as the commendable chemistry you shared with the rest of the cast. The fans found it incredibly funny that your character was the complete opposite of how you actually acted in real life, and you often found yourself blissfully immersed in the fan base's love and praise.
Your channel and social media suddenly grew tenfold. Although you had stopped uploading videos every week due to the recording of season one, your followers were more than happy to wait for your return, and as one would expect, they were thrilled to have you back once you did upload a vlog explaining everything.
Over the course of the six months, you had been recording from time to time for a YouTube video in the set. Previously, you had asked the producers for permission to record some behind-the-scenes for your channel and your usual interactions with the rest of the cast with your personal Sony camera, as you felt it would be a nice way to bring the fans and the cast closer.
The producers gave the okay on the condition that you would wait until the first season aired on Netflix. You happily agreed and carefully began recording some scenes of your dressers and hairdressers as they prepared you, a few shots of your instructor showing you how you were supposed to use the guns that Anastasia employed... simple things.
Back in the day, you were still getting acquainted with the other cast members, and you didn't want to seem rude by forcibly making them appear on your videos, so you waited for a few weeks until you could properly call yourself companions. Then, you invited them to appear in the videos.
Iñaki, Taz, and Jacob liked to take advantage of the little free time they had between scenes they didn't appear in to innocently steal your camera and use it to their heart's content. One day, you got home only to find the memory card was completely full. It was an extensive video of them walking around the set, with Taz recording while Kiki and Jacob pointed out random stuff to the people who lived inside your camera, as Jacob liked to call them.
Mackenyu, being more reserved and introverted, mostly liked to act as a cameraman for you as you showed the props you used and other things, often making comments or turning the camera around whenever you referred to something.
Meanwhile, Emily had a natural knack for being in front of the camera. Whenever you asked her to join in, she effortlessly slipped into the co-host role, bantering with you and adding her own insights into the behind-the-scenes world of the show.
With the first season out of the way, you took the time to carefully pick what videos you wanted to use in the final tape, and it took you a little over a month and a half to properly edit it and turn it into a wonderful thirty-minute-long behind-the-scenes. You even sent it to the producers and your co-stars in case there was a scene they wanted deleted. Fortunately, they all gave you the okay.
You teased the video a bit on your Instagram before uploading it a few days later, and the support it received was out of this world. It gained over two million views and hundreds of thousands of likes.
You were kind of expecting this. While some BTS had already been uploaded on YouTube, yours was different because you were showing it from your perspective. The fans loved every second of it, and even started asking for a second or third part. You even saw new videos on YouTube of recompilations from your video with the titles being silly things like The One Piece Cast Being Chaotic for Seven Minutes.
At that moment, your life felt so full. You were getting contacted by industries who wanted you to appear on their videos and their stages, thousands of fans who loved you, and a feeling so peculiar that this would be eternal.

I love all the english vas but in the latest I'm reminded again of why the vas for Marcille and Chilchuck are just so good for their respective characters
Their voices fit the 'not that old not that young' criteria since their characters look young but could actually be older than you think and vice versa because of their races
Marcille is someone who can be quite silly when she wants to be and her va just pulls off the silly personality so well; this particular scene just makes me cackle with how she transitioned between bittersweet goodbye to the familiar to flailing and being sad because why oh why Laios pls give her some time to grieve before cooking it 😆 it reminds me again that she's young. she may be older in years but she's young.
There was also that "this gives me the heebie jeebies" right after her serious "let's go" in the frog onesies episode
Meanwhile Chilchuck's va just always, for me anyway, pulls off the quite young teenage boy voice but here I can hear how he could be a dad. It's the Dad voice. When dad's worried about you thing. It's the mature adult voice, he's flipped from his usual demeanour of 'idc im here to pick locks' mode to 'who are you senshi what happened'
For me twas also the same when he said "I know there's a lot of things going on in your heart that idk about" to Laios when he was worried about the rest of the party after chimera Falin disappeared again
The transitions, mannn *chefs kiss, it's voice actors appreciation for me 👂🏼✨
Emily Rudd 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Casey Mongillo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It's my ears having a party because voices and sounds and intonations and personality based voices are cool

If you don’t like Nami I don’t fuck with you. If Nami is your least favorite character I don’t fuck with you. If you genuinely get upset at the “Nami hits Luffy when she gets mad” gag and not the “Sanji is a depraved pervert” gag, I don’t fuck with you. If you talk badly about Emily Rudd’s depiction of Nami because she has the body of a human woman I don’t fuck with you. If you acknowledge everyone’s trauma but Nami’s, I don’t fuck with you. Anyways, I ❤️ Nami.

Day One (01) of thought dumping.
Today, just every other weekend that I have, I spent all day rotting in bed- doom scrolling. However, I always go back to watching videos on YouTube on how to earn money via side hustles. Why though? "Cause money is great!" /insert that Wired Emily Rudd clip.
Anyways, no, but an actual good quote that I heard today regarding money is that "Money buys you freedom", and that's so accurate. I want the freedom that money gives you.
Watching those 'how to earn six-figures via internet' videos, they always start with these questions "what are your skills, do you have hobbies, interests? why not start monetizing those."
However, that circles back to needing money. You want to learn and upskill? You probably have to pay for courses. You want hobbies? Yeah that also needs money... these are what I kept saying, when I compare myself to other people that I see on social media, "Because I do not have the money to invest in myself and upskill, I'm not interesting enough, I'm not artistic enough and I'm not smart enough. Which also means I have nothing to monetize in order to find my own side hustle niche."
What an excuse. Clearly, those are just excuses that I tell myself in order to get away from actually starting. There are ways around upskilling and making your life more interesting using basic internet connection.
All I have to do is start, but why is that so difficult.
But this is why this is here!
WHAT IS THIS BLOG ALL ABOUT
Well, I call it the "Adding Character Depth Project".
Correct, character depth, I believe that my life is not interesting like others who have the money to spend outside, my personality is also not that unique and I don't think I have any out of this world talent, magic, strength or brains. In short, if I am a character in a novel, my life story and personality doesn't have that flare that makes them really interesting. The maximum role I'll get is that one liner character.
But if character building and character development exist in novels, why can't it be done in real life??? There's no way this is it. The other side of myself can't believe this is my maximum potential, I'm not satisfied with this version of myself. There has to be more.
So how can I add character depth to myself? Since this is not research based, let's start with what I find interesting that other people do or the people that I aspire to be do:
Journaling. This is what this tumblr is all about. Thought dump and progress dump. (With my personality of referencing what other people do, I wanted to make an official website for a blog but that's too time consuming and I'll end up stopping before I even started writing. So good old tumblr it is.)
Reading. I like reading actually but need to diversify. But for the past years I got hooked on fluffy romantic mlm and wlw books and I haven't able to explore beyond that genre anymore. I would like to read books that would make me think, that would intrigue me, that would make me feel like life is really interesting.
Pursuing art at 20s. I saw videos like PewDiePie where he started documenting his art journey by drawing everyday for 100 days(?) and it looks promising. As much as possible what I actually find interesting in drawing is world building, I want to draw the world or scenery that is usually being describe in the books that I've read. I don't really know how to start that one though.
Films. The people that I find to have interesting takes on life and unique personalities are usually people who dabble on films and photography. I want to start on expanding my knowledge and "uniqueness" (lol) by watching more films with good writing, good plot, good acting, good music and not my comfort variety shows.
Actually upskilling. The internet have so much to offer I'm pretty sure I can upskill on YouTube and find ways to earn money with that. Though this is quite a goal on it's own.
I'm pretty sure there are more to add but my brain can't think of any. Anyways, there are more details to add in every single one of these projects or hobbies, but I think it's better to discuss them separately.

Emily Lockmoore || 33 || #307 || Emily Rudd || Closed
Personality:
Living such a nomadic life has turned Emily into a very extroverted introvert. She is hopelessly optimistic at times, always striving to see the best in everything, but she isn't naive enough to miss the red flags. She loves a crowd and has loads of friends, but she knows they are always temporary. So real attachment isn't something Emily has ever really experienced - except for her brother, but he was family and that wasn't the same. It wasn't really something she'd necessarily gone looking for either. Her home base changing every few years being the major reasoning behind her lack of anyone long term . She is an artist and it shows. She is far less coordinated like her big brother. The two are opposites in a lot of ways do to their shared, yet very different upbringings.
Biography:
The Lockmoores had about as normal a life as you could have - from the outside anyway. They put on the perfect family facade so well no ever qestioned when they materialized in a new neighborhood or when they left it. Behind closed doors however the patriarch of the familial unti was a black arms dealer working for both the US grovernment and some of their underground partners. “It’s a living,” he would reply whenever asked about it from those in the know.
And it was. A very good living, but it didn’t come without its costs. Neither of the children were ever to really form bonds with friends until adulthood when they were no longer being carted around the world for ’dad’s work’. And their family outside of the four of them was nonexistent. Their father had long before cut ties with his and their mother had been an only child whose parents had already passed by the time she met Frank.
Oscar was first, then Emily five years later. The two of them becamse thick as thieves from day one. Oscar is extremely protective of his sister - sometimes to the point of secluding her from the world. He means well, but it can be a little much for Emily at times. Shortly after her birth, Millie was diagnosed with cancer and survived another year before perishing to the disease. Frank did his best to keep things the way they’d always been, but Millie was a big part of keeping the children fed, clean, and happy when he was gone.
For awhile it was just Oscar and Emily at home, but it wasn’t long until her big brother was expected to join in on the family business. Her father died a few years later during a deal gone bad, leaving Oscar and Em on their own. It was at that point that Oscar joined the military and the two of them began their own nomadic lives. Emily had always moved near wherever Oscar was stationed.
The two resided in D.C.when the world fell. She was at work, inking a client, when her phone rang. Seeing it was Oscar, she nearly sent an automated text that she was busy and would call later. Instead she asked her client for a break and left them to relax as she took the call. His voice was rushed and had a hint of panic when he told her to get somewhere safe. She tried to get him to calm down, but was only left with a short 'I'm on my way' before he hung up on her.
By the time she got back to the front of the shop and to her station, a lone infected had made its way inside and bitten her client. Now faced with two opponents, Emily had very little time to react. She grabbed the nearest thing she could to use as a weapon and ran back to the break room, shutting and locking the door behind her. It wasn't long before moans and banging could be heard against the door. She clutched the knife - a fucking butter knife of all things - ready to do what she had to if the door couldn't hold them.
It felt like an eternity before the moans and banging stopped, followed by a brief silence before a soft knock came along with Oscar's voice. She rushed to open the door and crashed into a hug with him, only taking long enough to prove to each other they were fine. The two then headed off to get Liz, Oscar's fiancee. She hated that she was left to wait in the car while her brother rushed in to play savior. Time ticked on far too long however, and she soon disobeyed her orders, her decision to go after him solidified when she saw an infected shuffle by the glass windows.
If it hadn't been for her intervention, she would have been the last Lockmoore standing. After escaping the office building they went to Oscar's apartment - the security of an elevated unit relieved at least a bit of stress. The siblings lasted there for almost a month before the building had been overrun and they were forced to get back on the move. They headed East - Oscar sure the cold would knock out a good portion of the infected. They took shelter in abandoned buildings and subways as needed and kept warm with small fires they set each night - although they were barely big enough to give light to read, let along warm them. But it was better than nothing and the two pushed on until coming to The Wexley's parking garage.
Pre Outbreak Occupation: Tattoo Artist / Artist Previous Zombie Experience: Fighting her way through D.C. and on to New York. Martial Status: Single Children: N/A Residence: Apt. #307 Years residing at The Wexley: New Resident Connections: Oscar Lockmoore - brother, Eliza 'Liz' Delgado - future sister-in-law, deceased

Alright so, my thoughts on what is hopefully the first season of the One Piece Live Action adaptation.
I really really enjoyed it.
Oh my god the pacing of this show, for the most part, is so good. The pacing of this show didn’t make me want to pull my hair out. I feel like that’s one of my biggest gripes with the anime, because of the nature of what it is, it will draw things out forever and by the time we get to the point I’ve already lost interest. Not a problem here… for the most part, but I’ll touch on that in a moment.
The overall look and feel of the show is actually what it needed to be. It didn’t take itself too seriously, especially at the beginning, was fun and captured the spirit of adventure the show has. The sets were also just incredible and I have to applaud the use of practical effects where they could. Really helped make things seem more tangible… because it was. And the CGI they do use, for the most part, looks really good. Not completely realistic but not “oh wow that’s cheap.”
Do you realize how hard it is to make a character like Arlong actually seem threatening in live action? And not come off looking incredibly stupid? A lot of that is due to the make up team obviously, but also the voice and presence of the actor. Mckinley Belcher III really pulls some weight, despite obviously not being as giant as his anime/manga counterpart.
The cast for this show was spot on. People have been praising Inaki Godoy, as they should. He deserves it. He’s a great Luffy. Mackenyu was great as Zoro, perfect amount of swagger. Jacob Romero was fun as Usopp, actually made me kind of like Usopp. His chemistry with the actress playing Kaya (Celeste Loots) was so good. Taz Skylar was good as Sanji though I feel he really didn’t get a whole lot of time to show off.
Though unsurprisingly to me, I think my favorite performance was from Emily Rudd. Nami was already my favorite of the crew members but Emily really just hit all the right notes for me. Those screams when the Marines are taking her money? Perfection. But also everything leading up to the Arlong Arc, her trying to keep her walls up but also realizing she cares about this ragtag group of weirdos she’s found herself with, the subtleties in how she’s absolutely torn because she knows it can’t last forever. And when she’s playing tough amongst Arlong’s crew it doesn’t come off as cheesy or forced, she sells all of it.
I think overall there was only one weak performance for me but they still did what they were supposed to.
Alright, now with my positives out of the way…
I feel like we spent too much time with the Marines. Don’t get me wrong, the development for those characters was fine, but the more we cut back to them the more I was like “really? Again?” This was really my only gripe with the pacing, cuz it felt like a lot of the time we were just having Koby discover the same thing again and again. Koby is idealistic, oh no the Marines/Garp do something to threaten that idealism, rinse and repeat rinse and repeat rinse and repeat. That’s why I almost completely stopped commenting on that side of the story.
As much as I dislike saying it, outside of the great acting from everyone involved, the Arlong Arc kind of felt a little weak to me? Don’t get me wrong, I knew it wasn’t gonna beat the anime. The way you can emphasize things in animation is just more dynamic than live action. So I knew to keep my expectations somewhat more grounded. Still.
I lot of my issues are with how they told the story. I feel like a lot of the punch for the Arlong Arc came from Nojiko and the village knowing. They pretended to not know so Nami wouldn’t feel guilty abandoning them. And then that moment where all of the village is ready die fighting, Nami realizing she’s about to lose everything anyway after eight years of trying to protect it, that all leading into her breakdown… Not to mention Nami just continuing to deny Luffy’s help, throwing dirt, crying, telling Luffy this has nothing to do with him until finally finally she asks for help. Heck, we don’t even get Bellemere’s name spoken in this show! And the emphasis on Luffy destroying Nami’s prison! I just feel like we needed a bit more time with this story, which we could have got if we cut a couple Marine scenes.
Obviously, again, I wasn’t expecting a complete one for one retelling. I don’t mind changes as long as it still carries that emotion.
Would I still feel that way if I hadn’t seen the anime? I don’t know. I like to think I’d still be a little concerned about the pacing of that arc but that’s only speculation on my end.
It also just felt a little off that we had this big climax with Arlong and then we had to throw in that little confrontation with Garp. That kind of took some wind out of my sails. I get why they needed it, especially since they probably weren’t sure if they were gonna get a second season. Still.
All of this being said, I must reiterate that I really enjoyed this show. It wasn’t perfect but for an adaptation of an anime it was pretty spectacular. There was a lot of passion and love put into this, and it definitely shows. Hopefully we’re getting that season 2 eventually, and hopefully Netflix doesn’t do what they do and cancel it after that second season. *knock on wood*

Ok so I instantly started fancasting ur lesbiab IWTV art if it were an irl show lmao, wlw brain go brrrr
Right now I’ve got Teyonah Parris for Louis, Lily Tomlin for current-era Daniel (don’t have a younger version just yet, if you had any thoughts? 👀), Aisha Ahmed for Armand, and for Lestat I’m thinking Emilia Clarke maybe
Anyway this show in my head is going GREAT tyty sm for the mental food 🥰
hiii anon <33 hope you're doing well!!
Teyonah Parris as Louis and Lily Tomlin as Daniel is nothing short of genius,, 10s across the board ‼️ As for young Daniel I was thinking maybe Saoirse Ronan or Emily Rudd?? For Armand I think a darker skinned actress would be more appropriate (I'll add onto this once I find someone satisfactory) and also!!! I wonder how you feel about Elizabeth Lail as Lestat
#it's so hard to find darker skinned desi actresses because of rampant industry level colorism (this is coming from a desi person)#anyway wlw brain do go brrr and im glad youre having as much fun with this as i am#<333#anon

HELLO FELLOW ZONAMI OK SO disclaimer: im still in Drum Island arc of the anime but i know bits and pieces of the later story of OP
but even so!!! zoro and nami just give me Vibes i can't quite ignore???
the bickering to disguise how much they care for each other,,,zoro trusting nami to save him from drowning even after she 'betrayed them',,, being the only one to notice her get bitten by a bug on elbaf island that gave her a fever,,,
honestly i think ive mentioned it before that they cut out a lot of moments between them in animated specials so i wouldn't be surprised if they cut out the moments i mentioned before out of the LA but then!!! the LA gives us little tidbits of different interactions between the two that gives makes my zonami heart flutter 🥹
what do u think of the LA trailer moments so far?
Hi fellow Zonami, thanks for talking to me. I had given short answer but let me deliberate it more in this column.
I think ZoroxNami is a classic couple troupe that pretty popular when Eichiro Oda started One Piece series (1997)
It's around the same time Naruto started and Harry Potter published (Not shounen but It'll be relevant later).
Speaking about big three, we shouldn't left out one of their biggest shounen influence : Dragonball.
Especially if you look at MC's love interest, you'll notice similarities.
Chichi, Hinata, Hancock.
All three are black haired bombshell that obsessed with the MC who's kinda oblivious toward their feeling.
So, whats that get to do with our ship? Well for DBZ and Naruto, it's a fact that male and female Deuteragonist ended up together. (Bulma-Vegeta : Sakura-Sasuke)
Then Nami and Zoro gonna end up together too?
Unfortunately I don't think Oda will follow that far.
He stated early he won't make Nami fall for any of the crew. I'll hold on to that words.
However it's clear as a day that Zoro and Nami is such a good potential and Oda often throws nods to that cliche such as :
Matching color scheme (green & orange are complimentary color often used together)
Zoro's mom being from thief family
Nami santoryuu art.
And let's talk about that Arlong park pool scene.
it's the only one instance when Zoro put his life on the line-devoid of his power-for people other than luffy.
This scene emphasis that he get nami behind her thieving scheming mask. And I don't think any of the crew ever done that to her. It's a big thing that strangely missed out among fandom sphere.
Anyway, It made me think maybe at some point Oda consider the possibility for the cliche couple to happen but scrapped it afterwards? We will never know.
AND if we talk about LA, Hollywood isn't strange to the male-female Deuteragonist ended together either (Harry Potter, that's why I mentioned it before).
The bickering habit of two of them fit the Hollywood picture.
I won't be surprised if the director see something there, propose to give tiny nod to the troupe. Which Oda approve.
Plus the cast (Emily Rudd & Mackenyu) are too hot not to have some spark on screen!
I believe LA viewers would experience one piece differently than manga reader or anime watcher.
Within short duration they should convince us the straw hat getting close as a team. New scene bound to happen and I can't wait for them!

GHOSTS AND DEMONS AND EVEN WILDER YET
Opening this weekend:
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire--This fifth feature in the franchise begins with a nice macabre episode set in 1904, like something from a creepier version of Disney's Haunted Mansion. This is followed by an extended chase through the streets of Manhattan, as the current Ghostbusters pursue, in the "Ectomobile," an eel-like flying dragon spirit up from the sewers.
It's a reasonably diverting start, and the movie goes on to deploy, in addition to Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon and the kids from 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife, most of the available stars from the 1984 original. Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, Williams Atherton and Bill Murray show up--no Sigourney Weaver or Rick Moranis, alas--and not just in cameos but with fairly substantive screen time. I was disappointed that the all-woman crew from the much-maligned and underrated 2016 version wasn't invited to this party, but apparently fans are still traumatized.
Anyway, the old vets here are good company--Murray with his peerless sardonoic line readings, Akyroyd with his gee-whiz delivery of expository gibberish. A couple of new adds, like Patton Oswalt as an authority on the occult and Kumail Nanjiani as a clod who sells Aykroyd the spherical ancient artifact that serves as the McGuffin, also get into the proper, uhm, spirit of things.
On the whole the movie, directed by Gil Kenan from a script by Kenan and Jason Reitman, is an enjoyable lavish no-brainer. The closest it gets to any emotional weight is an intriguing plot strand in which the teenage heroine (Mckenna Grace) bonds, seemingly romantically, with a teen ghost (Emily Alyn Lind) after she's forbidden to go 'busting until she turns 18; the actors manage a touching rapport even through the special effects prism.
But if Frozen Empire--which concerns a horned demon with freezing superpowers imprisoned inside the McGuffin--doesn't feel like a home run, it may be the result of too much wholesomeness. The teen romance and bickering family dynamic didn't quite feel like Ghostbusters to me, somehow. What made the '84 film seem new was its mix of extravagant, big-budget special effects spectacle with the snarky, irreverent slacker sketch-comedy of Murray and the other stars. Only when Frozen Empire taps into this sensibility does it truly thaw out.
The movie is dedicated to Ivan Reitman, director of the original, and this film, like several of the others, includes a nod to Cannibal Girls, Rietman's 1973 shocker starring the impossibly young and adorable Andrea Martin and Eugene Levy. I hope it makes fans seek out that amusing low-budget creepshow; there's a movie that doesn't suffer from too much wholesomeness.
Late Night With the Devil--Here's another wry paranormal chiller set in New York, although it was conceived by the Australian brothers Cameron Cairnes and Colin Cairnes and filmed in Melbourne. The premise is that we're watching the 1976 Halloween episode of a syndicated talk show, a perennial also-ran in the ratings to Johnny Carson. Desperate for a sweeps win, the recently widowed host (David Dastmalchian) stacks the guest list with a hokey stage psychic (Fayssal Bazzi), an Amazing Randi-type skeptic (Ian Bliss), and a psychiatrist (Laura Gordon) and her patient, an angelically smiling teenage girl (Ingrid Torelli). This girl was rescued from a cult and just might be possessed.
From the set to the music to the "More to Come" break cards, the Cairnes Brothers truly capture the look and feel of anything-goes '70s talk shows to a degree that will be nostalgic to those of us who remember them. The movie also evokes sources of the period from The Exorcist to Network (Michael Ironside provides stentorian narration in the manner of Network's Lee Richardson), and the soundtrack includes the likes of Flo & Eddie's "Keep It Warm."
The "found footage" conceit is quickly strained; the supposed "behind the scenes" sequences are pretty cinematic and helpfully narrative. But after a while you accept it, largely because the acting, especially the haunted yet game showmanship of the excellent Dastmalchian, keeps us involved.
It's a little scary, but mostly Late Night With the Devil is, like Network, a tongue-in-cheek satire of TV business culture, with ripe lines like "Ladies and gentlemen, a live television first, as we attempt to communicate with...the Devil. But not before a word from our sponsors." I also loved the implication that no amount of supernatural power could overtake Carson in the ratings in those days. Apparently even the Devil couldn't do that.
At Harkins Shea...
Remembering Gene Wilder--This documentary, directed by Ron Frank, does indeed fondly remember the late comedy great. Frank makes Wilder himself the narrator, using audiobook excerpts from his noirishly-titled 2005 memoir Kiss Me Like a Stranger.
Born Jerry Silberman in Milwaukee, he grew up trying to make his mother laugh, and later drew inspiration from the mental patients he worked with while serving in the U.S. Army. He wanted, he says, something a bit "wilder" for his stage name when he started acting in New York. Cast in Brecht's Mother Courage and her Children at the Martin Beck Theatre in the early '60s, he met leading lady Anne Bancroft's future husband Mel Brooks, who later cast him in The Producers.
From there, we get a chronicle of some of the highlights of Wilder's movie career--not all of them; Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx and Start the Revolution Without Me, for instance, are passed over. But there's terrific material on Bonnie and Clyde, The Producers, Willy Wonka, Young Frankenstein, his relationship with Richard Pryor, his scenes with the sheep in Woody Allen's Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (he says that Allen told him that he wanted to do a version of Sister Carrie with a sheep instead of Jennifer Jones), and more. My own favorite of Wilder's characters, Jim aka The Waco Kid in Blazing Saddles, is very well represented here.
Talking heads include Brooks, Carol Kane, Mike Medavoy, Alan Alda, Ben Mankiewicz, Rain Pryor, Harry Connick, Jr., Eric McCormack, and Willy Wonka's Charlie Bucket himself, Peter Ostrum, as well as Wilder's widow Karen Wilder, all speaking with unmistakable love. They tell good stories, but the real joy is simply the big dose of Wilder's utterly sui generis blend of innocent sweetness and strangled volatility. If the clips in this movie don't make you smile, you may need to see a doctor.

Initial Thoughts on the OPLA: Episode 1
I’ve just reread the manga through the East Blue + rewatched the anime through Orange Town with my sister (a coincidence on that one), so I’ve got the story really fresh on my mind and want to record my initial impressions on what works and what doesn’t. I’ve been a major live action proponent for years now, so super excited to finally get to watch it.
The Good
The sets are all spectacular. The ships especially at the start are an absolute treat!
The casting across the board is very strong, both in bringing to life the visuals of some characters (Coby and Higuma are gasp-out-loud exact replicas of their characters) and in terms of creating a world that feels real and lived in. Iñaki is shockingly believable as Luffy, every dopey line feels organic; Mackenyu delivers in the fight choreography and physicality of Zoro; and Emily Rudd is exceeding my expectations based on what we saw in the trailer.
In some scenes with Luffy/Coby, they light Coby so he has this almost angelic glow. And I love that. Because it would be too obvious to light Luffy up like the sun, but instead, it’s like Coby is lit from within in the light of Luffy’s will
The way they layer in the flashbacks throughout the episode works much better than one big cutaway, so kudos to that decision. (Also child Luffy is a delight.)
So far really enjoying the fight choreos. They don’t overstay their welcome, each character has their own style – particularly like the way Luffy kind of falls all over himself in the Axe Hand Morgan fight – and everything looks clean and like it connects. Big fan of letting Nami show off her staff skills. So long as they don’t have her beating major antagonists, I think it’s a good addition because it would be visually disappointing if she just skulked around during the fights
Speaking of Nami, the way they’re integrating Nami into the story in ep 1 worked really well. The changes to the plot may cause issues in later episodes, but it was a very solid intro to Nami – preserving her iconic intro scene with the Buggy pilots – while also giving her a different mission and reason to partner up with Luffy. And anyway, I like watching Nami hatch a scheme.
They translated some of the more ridiculous, on-the-nose character traits of the antagonists into believable representations of the same thing. Morgan doesn’t walk around announcing his “greatness” every ten seconds, but he’s swayed by flattery, loves a statue of himself, and can’t accept responsibility. Alvida is vain and narcissistic without being a mean-spirited trope. It’s great.
A lot of funs are going to debate if certain lines or jokes are cringe, but I think the dialogue is charming and very much in line with the humor popularized in major action franchises. It’s not groundbreaking humor but it got a chuckle out of me a few times. And honestly who gives a fuck about cringe? I think a lot of anime fans live with the specter of their high school bully looming over their shoulder, imagining what they’d say to any given thing and they’ve gotta let that shit go
The Meh
In Luffy’s opening scene, it appears he’s talking straight to the audience, introducing himself, only to reveal he’s actually talking to a News-Coo when the camera cuts. And the joke is not nearly funny enough to justify how jarring those first 20 seconds are when you think they’re going to have characters address the camera directly.
The timeline in Shellstown gets flipped around, so that we can see Zoro earn his arrest, which is a great choice – show don’t tell and all that. BUT the change they made to why Zoro fights Helmeppo drains all the nobility out of it. They keep saying “you protected that girl” but Rika wasn’t in danger? Helmeppo was unkind to her but not threatening, not siccing his vicious attack dogs on her like in the anime. If Zoro hadn’t interfered, she would have been fine. I appreciate he doesn’t like bullies, but I think it’s a weaker reason to intervene and should be less impressive to Luffy.
The named characters who attend Roger’s execution stand out so ridiculously. Everyone else is covered in dirt and wearing beige tones, and you’ll cut to the cleanest looking man playing Mihawk or young Shanks with his hair standing out like a beacon. It’s very much that “anime spot the protagonist” meme
The Ugly
That man – while admittedly very sexy –is not Garp. It’s almost shocking compared to how carefully the spirit of every other character has been preserved.
The changes made to Coby’s story in episode 1 are pretty disappointing. A pretty key part of Luffy’s character is that Luffy helps people who ask for help or fight for themselves; He’s not just a hero who will swoop in when he witnesses injustice. Coby earns Luffy’s respect and protection in the manga. Here, he doesn’t. He just gets dragged along reluctantly with Luffy until the very end of the episode, where he finally makes his stand, and it’s pretty anticlimactic.
Withholding judgment for the Time Being
Live action Zoro is a lot angstier so far. He’s just as confident and competent, but less likely to laugh, has less fun with it. From his intro scene, it appears the death of Kuina may be weighing on him more heavily (wonder if it will be a more recent death in the live action?). He leaves Shellstown not yet bought in on Luffy’s will. I think slowing his arc down makes sense for a tv show, so interested to see how it delivers on that.
We’ll see where they take the Garp arc. If it keeps Coby and Helmeppo on my screen – and more importantly, gives Coby a chance to redeem himself – I may come to love it.
