oopsies- a late update (08/16/2024)

hiiiiiii :3 starting off strong by announcing that Price of Love is officially dropped. Sorry if you were expecting the demo release.

If you've been following my updates, you'll know that this was a possibility and now it came true!! I did not manage to recover the writing on Obsidian or the coding in Choicescript, which fucking sucks.

But that's okay! I'm in the process of writing another story, albeit completely opposite from this one, meaning if you're following me because you like horror and dark stories then this is not the one for you. The new one will be lighthearted and much shorter because I am not tempting fate to try and delete my drafts just because I was overambitious.

Whether or not I will come back and rewrite this story in the future is completely undecided, and while I did enjoy creating the plot for Price of Love, I do have to admit that it was hard, as I'm not the most experienced writer. If the new IF goes well and I feel more confident, maybe I will go back to POL and rewrite it.

Anyway that's all for now, I have created a side blog for the new IF so it's easier to track @burntcarpet0

Have not posted anything yet but go ahead and follow if you'd like, though I expect the intro won't come out anytime soon. As always, thanks for reading this far!

Hi Amethyst! It's been a hot minute since I sent an ask in, but I have been reading both fics every day (still obsessed lmao) (also I name changed btw, used to be ElenaLoo)

Anyways, I had written a whole ask waxing eloquent on all the wonderful things going on in ttsbc, but I accidentally shut off my computer partway through and frankly I can't be bothered to write it all out again lmao. Just. It's beautiful (wow isnt that so meaningful and deep? im sure you're feeling very complimented rn)

The REAL thing I wanted to talk about was Traveling thieves (which is by far my favorite fanfic of ALL TIME), and all the amazingness in ttsbc made me forget it even existed for the past few weeks. But the other day I was just like "oh yeah. Traveling thieves." and then i reread the whole thing. whoopsies.

Ummm anywyas there's so many thoughts in my head about all the little guys, but recently I've been on an Imp and Skizz obsession (just scroll on my page for .2 seconds and you'll see) and YOU. You left them on a CLIFFHANGER. >:((( (not actually mad btw). I just. so excited for them. They're out alone in the woods right now and Skizz is going to have the perfect opportunity to kill Impulse and get away and I just am falling apart thinking about them. (I drew them to cope lol, posted on my blog but also later here so that I can talk about it more). I can see this playing out a few ways. Obviously Skizz isn't actually going to kill Impulse, so he's either going to 1) make up some excuse as to why he can't do it right then, but still plans to do it eventually, or 2) he does it. but he doesn't. Skizz attacks Impulse when he's not expecting it, there's a scuffle, and Skizz comes out on top---BUT THEN HE CAN"T FINISH IT!!! and it's a whole thing where even tho skizz tried to kill him, imp is still so understanding and skizz cries and impulse just freaking gives him a hug and

Whatever you do will be beautiful, I'm sure. I think you mentioned you're switching to tt after this fic, so crossing my fingers it's imp and skizz. (Though, would also be very happy with Martyn and Ren :P) (or anything really i just love tt)

Anyways, I had the art on my blog but I'm also putting it here so i can say things about it to you

Mostly I'm just very proud of their expressions, with Impulse being all concerned glancing over at Skizz, meanwhile Skizz is completely deadpan staring forwards, also looking very tired bc he needs a break from this universe. Also I switched up my Impulse design a lil bit from last time (if u even remember that lol it was months ago now). you would think, just looking at them, that Impulse took way longer to design, but nope, I was messing around with Skizz for at least double the time, trying to figure out how to have him facing forward whilst still showing some of the scars on his back. I gave up eventually xD (all that means is that im gonna have to draw him again later, from different angles)

actually that made me remember a question I had: are you planning to ship Imp and Skizz? Ik you said Zed and Tango are going to be a thing far in the future, but... skizzpulse? plzzzz plz pretty please haha im not obsessed

aaaaaand that reminds me of another question, is skizz going to be in ttsbc? (pretty please also same question as tt, if he was in ttsbc, are him and impulse together? Im addicted to them all i care about these days is some good imp and skizz shipfics, and you're such a fantastic writer, both with plot and the vibes of the words themselves. u could write such good imp and skizz. just imagine the possibilites! (am i selling it?))

Hiiiiiii <33333 so! I know we know next to nothing about fyodor and Nikolai’s relationship BUT I had an epiphany and since we know that fyodor is inspired by Ivan Karamazov and specifically the scene with his devil, how do you feel about Nikolai=Ivan Karamazov’s devil and whatever this implies???

I haven't reread The Brothers Karamazov still (I read it when I was a teenager so my memory is not great) so I don't know that I'm a great person to ask about this at all. I'm also not great at analysis posts and I am doing this all on my phone. But I like you, so I want to try at least, so I reread the part with Ivan's conversation with the devil in his delirium. You're welcome.

Is this a good fit for Nikolai's role? I'm not so sure that it is.

Because what I get from that part is that Ivan is having a conversation with an apparition born from his delirious state, and that the "devil" exists within himself.

Not to say that he has no hope or is literally the devil, it makes sense with some of the other things the devil explains and the nature of the conversation that makes it seem like Ivan is angry for being in his mind. (It seems more like anger for him appearing and being in his room but if we are going off it being a hallucination influenced by Ivan's subconscious the room is his mind then that is where the devil actually is)

Wait a damn minute where else have we heard this reference to rooms...

**I'm going to come back to this after i finish explaining why I don't think Nikolai is fit to be representative of the devil to Fyodor's Ivan but you can probably already guess *who* i think is**

Anyways back on track sorry I'm not great at this sort of thing at all. So Ivan's conversation with the devil to me comes across as an internal struggle between good and evil. The devil's statements (and he really does most of the talking) are around the nature of the devil and the idea of the necessity of evil (the devil goes as far as to say nothing would happen without evil, like if there was nothing to go against there would be no events and nothing to life). He also explains the devil exists in everyone's daily lives in mundane ways, but also that the devil (and God) can exist inside of people too.

“All the rest around me, all those worlds, God, even Satan himself – for me all that is unproven, whether it exists in itself, or is only my emanation, a consistent development of my, I, which exists pre-temporally and uniquely” 

There is also a part where the devil explains that without him, there would be nothing but hosanna (/joy) and that life of nothing but joy isn't a life really at all, basically saying that it would be a life with nothing happening and no suffering but a life without suffering and only joy could be it's own hell.

This is doesn't really align with Nikolai's beliefs right? He sees awareness of what he views as the cage he (and people that just aren't aware) is in as the cause of his issues. That people are unaware that they aren't truly free, but he is aware and has to rid himself of what he views as chaining him (settling on his feelings for Fyodor in the end).

Now you could argue that maybe Nikolai would agree with the devil here in the sense that a life of blissful unawareness is similar to a life of nothing but joy, with nothing happening, and that is a hell in and of itself. But I think they are talking about two different things, because I don't think Nikolai thinks people who aren't aware of their cage lack suffering, or lack the existence of evil in their day to day lives. They don't have that life of nothing but joy that the devil is talking about so I don't think they mesh well enough to say it works as a representation of Nikolai.

Also, Nikolai doesn't appear to be trying to convince Fyodor of ideas, his battle is with himself, so that also doesn't fit the role of the devil in this chapter I don't think not for Fyodor.

Basically, none of this to me is screaming Nikolai. But if you had ideas as to why you think it does I'm definitely down to hear them.

If Fyodor is inspired by this scene in tbk it think this means that Fyodor is Ivan and Fyodor's ability (or also Fyodor himself at the same time) is the devil. Because the devil in the form Ivan witnesses is part of Ivan in the first place, it comes from his mind, and from what I rememeber he is lonely in comparison to the other characters in that book, so who does he wrestle with these issues with around his guilt and concerns? Himself, and he figures out his path from there. Ivan even says it himself to the devil at one point, "You are myself.”

The words the devil speaks and the concepts he argues aren't created from nothing, but related to the role of Satan and evil, this is just him essentially arguing outloud with himself about these things. It also why he probably is really not into accepting a lot of the ideas about faith the devil also explains to him, because it is like he is presenting them to himself via hallucination.

Anyways I am absolutely rambling, so back to the dead apple quote.

If the devil is born of Ivan's psyche and loneliness is that not similar to a sort of friend? The devil appears in his feverish delerium, maybe exactly when he needs him to, to have this conversation about evil, God, and challenging Ivan's reliance on logic. Maybe you could argue the border between the "devil" or "evil" in him and the rest of him disappeared for that moment, and "the devil" awoke in his room with him, letting them talk as if he was a separate being.

Maybe that's Fyodor, and the writers for dead apple (since they got that speech from Asagiri about Fyodor's character) took inspiration from that?

To me, Nikolai doesn't have anything to do with it. And that also makes sense I think, because from what we do see with their relationship and Nikolai's own words, he didn't know him very well. It didn't sound like they were very close or had deep conversations prior with what Nikolai said after his death.

Plus when you take into account the breakdown that might be lies or might have truth where he says he was weak and his ability took over because of that, and that his ability is evil, the constant references to him being a demon, and the weird differences between Fyodor's separated ability in dead apple compared to everyone else's.

I think there is more of an argument to be made that Fyodor's ability is more akin to the devil in The Brothers Karamazov in that chapter, or Fyodor himself is both. That he's based off Ivan in that scene and the devil is part of Ivan's psyche because of his condition, so Fyodor is both because that part is also a part of him as well. But since abilities are tied so closely to their users, it makes sense either way to me.

Okay um... this really is just rambling... and it's weird... I would not blame you(or anyone) if you see this and think "oh wow. She really is weird and crazy. Nope, I'm done with her". Because.... what I wrote down there... haha😅

Well. First off, I don't really read fics that much- um... yeah. I only started reading fics a few months ago. I probably haven't even had a taste of half of the troupes that exist in the world-

So far I've just read anything that I like. I see the writer's note or the tags and go "oh wow. Yeah, I like this" then I read it. So a lot of the time I go after

Despite not knowing what half the words mean, I read smut. I'm sorry- I'm sorry. But half of the fics I can find on rare pairs are smut. And I like a lot of rare pairs. And I'm also learning abt reproduction in school so I think I'm allowed to read them(wtf? No that does not give you the qualification t-). But really I- I need something out of them. Okay?

So I read anything really. I'm not against anything. And when I say I'm not against anything? I mean ANYTHING

I kid you not, I read 'cupcake' and came out giggling in joy, also read 'dipper goes to taco bell' and walked out feeling... well it sucked. Why would someone write..... okay?.... but also at the same time I just found the whole thing just.. hilarious. It has a plot(somewhat) makes no sense... it was unhinged.. I mean- jumping ropes?? With vocal chords??? Like- I'm sorry. I have a weird sense of humor

Don't get me wrong. I know that some of these troupes are bad and aren't good. But uh you see, I'm not saying that I support them. Just saying- the concept makes me laugh. It makes no sense. I don't go looking for it on purpose and I don't really have interest in them(I also probably won't be able to remember what the troupe is about)

Anyways, I don't mind reading whatever as long as it interests me. And isn't too long. I don't want to get into something that's so long I get caught up and read only that for days with no sleep :p

So a lot of the things I've read so far is one~three chapters? Or one shots. It's not like I can actually find a fic that satisfies all the things I like and isn't a one shot anyways.

If I choose preferences though, anything if it's from people I know, fluff, hurt, comfort, something to do with canon(fixing it, giving characters backstories stuff like that), mind cintrol/betrayal, uh... yeah. Stuff like that.

So.. yeah. I hope.... that answers your question and... doesn't leave too much against me lol

hiiiiiii m! read s2 ep2 and i LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!!!! <3 i actually am so relieved that steve reader friend divorce era is over......idk why but friendship breakups make me sadder than actual romantic breakups, partly because friendships themselves are so selfless and sort of by design the least selfish, or self interested you can be, with the benefit just being "we get to hang out!". i'm fascinated that steve forgave her so quickly as well, maybe because he's in a vulnerable spot right now (???), but i really did enjoy that reader was willing to make amends instead of sort of just digging an emotional hole for herself and exaccerbating the problem. i'm excited to see if she'll be as proactive down the line when things get more serious between them.

the way you handle nancy is interesting. i'm glad you don't shy away from reader being jealous of nancy and the attention of johnathan and steve and being pretty and rich, which omg, can drive full grown adults crazy, so why wouldn't a teen girl feel it, but also see nancy as like a full person? i also really appreciate your/reader's willingness to see both sides of the conflict, at least so far. a lot of people, from what i've seen, seem to view that night as a very traumatic night for steve where he got his heart broken, and that's true! it is! but it's also a night where nancy got blackout drunk from survivor's guilt that everyone around her told her to ignore in favour of just forgetting everything she experienced. that would make anyone upset! she probably does feel like her relationship is bs if it's main priority is not allowing her best friend's parents to find peace and move on! anyways, what i'm saying is that it's nice to have a realistic yet emotionally mature main character, and one who is so because they themselves are emotional and very in tune and self aware of them and others, instead of for just like, the plot vaguely, or because of modern sensibilities, no it's just an established and consistent part of her character, which is hard to do and it's so cool that you do it so well near constantly!

but i really was cheesing a lot like it just felt like a classic early 2000s CW show which is the high i'm constantly chasing. one tree hill season 1 episode i think 13 college party was very much the vibe i was getting. i should have been wearing cheetah print and leather and listening to the strokes as my friends convinced me that local basketball player was really the only guy who ~gets~ me. "i'll be" by edwin mccain plays in the background as we make eyecontact from across the room. you set the vibe, is what i'm trying to say.

billy was weirdo and creep and i'm happy he was acknowledged as such!!! not kidding when he came up to the reader i was also uncomfortable and it just had that very deeply horrible frat guy energy that makes every person subjected to it feel very objectified, and i think it's even more interesting that this is, from what i remember, one of the first time someone's shown outright interest in her, so i can imagine that that makes it even worse. i also sort of like the set up of johnathan defending her and steve holding him back, feels very much a great physical example of their position so far, with both johnathan playing a larger role in her life, as well as maybe signalling that johnathan's role as her protector, friend, confidant, all that is now passing onto steve's "hands", as steve's quite literally holding him. idk if that's too much i just had fun! and steve's final thoughts. my god. what an oblivious young man. the immediate jealousy and awe he feels.....his willingness to forgive....her promise to him as he confesses........both very moving and also amazed he hasn't realised his own feelings yet and excited that it will take him longer to do so. them making the promise together especially was so good, and such a good parallel to the one she and johnathan made in s1, and i'm excited to see if steve and r are able to uphold it better than johnathan was and how it'll serve to highlight the differences in their relationship.

u touched on something SO BIG and i loooove discussing it: steve forgave reader so easily. and YES it was a bit ??? but later itll make sense. overall weve seen that steve just so genuinely trusts readers intentions with him, he never doubts her honesty and hes been pulled towards her since day 1, so of course he immediately was like “oh yeah we can be bffs again <3”. HOWEVER ,,,, this will play a huuuge role later (next chapter i believe). we’ll get more insight and steves vulnerability that night also def helped

and nancy !!! yes !!! i had to rewatch her scene with steve in the library a million times and i just felt horrible for them both. they want to help each other, and as ive said before about jonathan and reader, steve and nancy take care of people in opposite ways and it makes them clash. nancy wants to be proactive, steve wants to be more on the down low and tend to those he has already. hes accepted and moved on, nancy has moved on but hasnt accepted.

and as for the jonathan n steve scene i originally had jonathan holding steve back, but honestly it didnt feel right. jonathan, as much as he sucks sometimes, will ALWAYS be the first to defend y/n. every time he will. steve will too, but jonathan has that spot rn and hed rather die than let her get hurt </3

as for billy ,,,, so incredibly excited to flesh out his dynamic with reader. it wont be romantic in the slightest, but reader will have some insight into billys homelife due to max, and u bet she’ll use it against billy.

omgggg hiiiiiii!!!! i've been reading ur stuff since butterfly i wanna say?? was that 2019 i can't remember but anyways in january i stepped away from tumblr for a while and today was the first time i logged in since then and there were so many chapters of bily updated!!! i'm so glad the world has grown and the characters are even more interesting as we learn about them and the choices they make. i guess i have a few questions bc i've missed so much. so first,,,, can u say how long its going to be until vmin address what happened during namjoon's rut. i can't take it to see them be apart silently!!! vmin divorce is real irl and in bily (just kidding hehe). second question: has the plot/ending changed at all in these six months in terms of future stuff that ur plannning out/thinking about? just curious bc your already amazing narrative voice and storytelling has gotten so much better over the past six months like ur constantly improving and its super cool so i was just wondering if this meant that u were also actively reworking bily and just playing it by ear in terms of whats going to happen toward the end.

ahhh welcome back! i'm so happy that you decided to return to my story even though it's been a few months and there is alot to catch up on!

As for the vmin stuff...i hate to be like- it's going to take a little bit, (in reality probably no more than 1-3 chapters). Before they address it- mostly because things actually need to escalate before they address it. its apart of the ending arc, i don't want to talk about bily ending yet.

As far as if Bily's ending has changed- the truth is it has stayed remarkably the same. The bulk of the change happened around the middle, because I had a lot of ideas that did or didn't pan out. Like I originally wanted to show tae getting breast implants and the m/c getting her scar removed, only now I'm not sure if i ever will show that it's up to you guys if you wanna see that. A lot of the changes have come about like that.

thank you for noting my progress!!! this makes me feel very good! i think the progress and my skill improving is actually one of the reasons why i keep writing fanfiction over writing a more personal projects that might stand a chance on being published- just because i think if you were to like- put all my works back to back, it's so clear how much better i've gotten! i feel like i have the greatest potential for growth writing fanfiction.

this may be a little far-fetched but i also kind of think you could make an argument for alicent being a stand-in for otto in viserys' eyes or at least a roundabout way of keeping his bff close

as for headcanons, i don't really have them, but i imagine this vague sort of unresolved pining on daemon's part while growing up with viserys as his only quasi-parental figure, culminating in a lot of acting out for attention. bonus points for fucky gender identity questions

Weekly(ish) Writing and Reading Update

hiiiiiii! Sorry, I live! I am just having a very PNW summer which means I’m either doing All of the Things or at home recovering from same. (I slept in today and went grocery shopping and sincerely felt like I’d been hit by a truck, rest days are just rough I guess.) I have a lil staycation this week so don’t know what day it is which is wonderful beyond words.

Also the Tour de France is lowkey eating my life, because it is maybe the best one in years! We all said that last year, but here we are again! Pogaçar and Vingegaard are maybe the best rivalry of my lifetime. (I am technically old enough to have seen LeMond and Hinault*, but have no real memory of them, other than LeMond being a kind of minor god of my childhood -- and let’s be honest, adult -- home.) I have dreams about pro cyclists and parcours and mountains. I love it so much. I am unspeakably grateful today was a rest day, which makes me totally exactly the same as Wout van Aert.

*I got into cycling properly during the Schleck and Contador years, but contend that didn’t last long enough to make an impact, other than my deep and enduring love for Andy Schleck. We’re gonna be arguing Pogi v Vingo** until 20-fricking-30.

**I had originally thought Vingegaard would win GC with Pogi becoming stronger in the third week; now I think they are perfectly equally matched but Vingegaard will still win. I don’t see more than a second or two moving between them, even back in the Alps. I have absolutely nothing to back this up other than vibes.

Anyway. You can imagine how much else I’m getting done. Writing sorry to this man

I finished, appropriately enough, Ned Boulting’s 1923 which is a beautiful book about the Tour de France and the nearly-forgotten Theo Beeckmann, and about the covid pandemic and history and tracking people and places down through time. I am an enormous fan of Ned (and David and Pete for any other Never Strays Far fans), and although this book very rarely pushes just a touch into bathos, it is mostly beautiful and wonderful and I’m glad he wrote it and I’m glad I read it.

(I finished it on June 30th, which is rather an important day in the book so I’m proud of my timing too.)

I also read A Half-Built Garden which I have a lot of very complex emotions about. I don’t know if I liked it, but I like how it made me react and think and feel and get grumpy. I’m not even sure it’s all that great, but it sure did make me think.

oh thats kinda hard. i think, probably, it'd be the king's men, by nora sakavic! i cant recommend them in good faith, but i did enjoy reading it.

honestly? i think theater and color guard! i've had an amazing year for both, so i'm hoping i'll continue to improve and get more chances!

25. Did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? Describe one

oh, rowan, you give me too much power. im not entirely sure when i created her, but akiko fujii. (putting a read more because i WILL ramble <3)

she was originally created as a my hero oc, but very quickly evolved as i found an old hyperfixation in the young justice animated show. akiko very quickly joined that, a possible founding member of the team.

although she started as a batgirl (in this 'verse, she predates babs, since timeline wise, it works), she morphs into her own hero. after a near fatal accident, she takes a several month break, passing batgirl to barbara. she returns as phoenix, coming back to the team. (also in this verse, the yj team doesnt expand past s1. they stay a team, and the others have their own thing)

since she is a bat, she's adopted by bruce wayne. (im not apologizing i love this character so much. yall dont even know) from this, she takes on more responsibility, becoming a senior member in her own right.

however, there are two ocs that i have as well: her partners, victoria parsens and chess moreux! (more-oh). (yes his name is chess, yes there are quite a few game related nicknames). this isn't about them, but victoria can create purple tinted forcefields and "bubbles" that she's able to manipulate. chess is known as the puppeteer, and he can control people if he makes physical contact with them. HIIIIIII!!!! Im so glad you guys r posting again!!! I missed having something to read every week.

Anyways, remember how I said i got the Percy Jackson books?

Well i had been busy so I couldn’t read them but I finally had time and I finished all 5 of them in like 3 days. Now i’m reading the heroes of Olympus books. So far i’ve only finished the first and i’m starting school in a week so I won’t get much time but yeah!!

I am back but idk if I'll be constant BC the publication of the next pjo book is this September and I have half a mind to wait and read that to see how I can add it into the fic jdjdjd I just love my canon compliant stories.

I had to reread the previous two books to remember because my brain is dead!! But I love rereading my shit I never fail to enjoy it

I read your thing about Doc and his notorious hunching, and wanted to know what you thought of my take on it.

Him being hunched is probably from him leaning over equations since I don't think he stands fully straight. And doc most likely knows that Marty is self conscious about his very small stature. So by being at eye level and not literally looking down at Marty it helps him feel more comfortable. Doc is also probably one of those nerds that get excited as he explains things and being at eye level probably helps him with displaying that so he doesn't scare anyone if he, puffs himself up in a way like with how he bounces around in the beginning in the first one when he's like 'If works! It actually works!' he turns away from Marty as he does it, not towards him. As far as 50s doc doing the hunching thing he does it to have a bit more of a personal connection with Marty. Since he's probably looked down on and called stupid by his dad, judge Brown when he found out that his son didn't want a law degree and wanted to be a scientist.

Your post this morning was sent to me by a fellow BTTF lover and it's been the entire base of our friendship. I don't find many other fans in the wild, I guess you could say, so it's nice to know there's others as obsessed with the old trilogy as I am!

I DO totally agree that Doc probably does not have very good posture. Not all the time really, but Doc has always come across as the "do as I say not as I do" sort of guy when it comes to that sort of casual personal health and safety- to summarize what might have otherwise been a big ramble, the man eats Burger King often enough there's debris strewn across the lab in the opening scene when they've long since not even been in there. Doc getting so absorbed in his experiments that he not only hunches, but probably stands and contorts around in the weirdest positions possible? I'm just saying I think that's something the rejuvenation clinic probably did a really good patch-up on. And, y’know, it very much tracks considering how often he’ll just gesture and move about wildly and then just! Hold that position, whatever it is, for the time he’s talking!

As far as 50s Doc goes though, I think I could see that! For as silly as I got during that post, I do believe part of it for him back then was just the fact he was a lot less assured and not particularly well-versed in spending time with other humans for all that long at a time. To him, whether conscious or subconscious [and I kinda think it is mostly subconscious on his part], eye contact and visibly paying mind- and maybe even leveling the playing field- is probably something considerate to do.

Man. A lot of this sure is looping back into me wanting to go off on little side tangents about my beliefs about autistic Doc <:] That’ll definitely be another time though, as there’s still one point remaining in your ask I’d love to tackle. That being, Marty’s height and his feelings about it!

Granted, anyone is allowed to feel however they’d like, especially with something that doesn’t really get directly addressed at any point. Sort of, anyway. Marty being small comes up a lot, though, and personally, I’ve actually always been of the belief it’s something Marty doesn’t really think about until it is suddenly a problem. As far as I can tell, he’s never particularly minded, but I’m here to gather the evidence to my point of view! Is this a convenient excuse to talk about all these moments that I find very silly? Yeah :) It sure is.

I! Won’t be covering the movies very much here, if only because the post in question- the Doc crouching post- pretty much covered every significant instance of Marty being small being brought up in the trilogy itself. Does this make my point malleable? Perhaps! I’m exploring it anyway. Using a read more as well since it’s a touch image heavy AND kind of just a touch rambly.

Item number one! Marty is aware of his own size! ... Sometimes. Sometimes, Marty knows without hesitation [and he does Not hesitate trying this plan] that he can fit into something like a box and goes right for it. Sometimes, Marty challenges someone to a fight and they turn out to have almost an entire foot on him. Go figure!

THIS ONE IS BLURRY and not particularly “evidence” so much as “Sparx’s point got away from them in record time and they’re using the opportunity to talk and share things again” but since it’s the best I can do and also the only item on this list that made me laugh for a solid five minutes while I kept pushing this statue around, I’m including it. In the game, there’s a statue in the center of town in the Citizen Brown timeline that you can interact with. If you do, Marty will push it. Marty is not tall enough to push it. Marty has to jump every single time he wants to turn the statue. You can do this an infinite number of times. It’s worth every press of the button I assure you.

Back to the focus [there’s a focus?], the wording on this one has actually stuck with me quite a bit. The guard in question isn’t even that tall to be perfectly honest, and yet Marty seems to be, in his own head, a perfectly average height when compared to other people. It’s the guard that’s too tall, you see.

This one is here in direct antithesis to the next one! Because yeah, on the one hand, this is a rare occasion someone directly calls Marty short. And he.. doesn’t really react! It’s also kind of antithesis to the previous one too, whereas in Marty’s head the guard is too tall, but Jennifer here is saying he’s the short one in any given equation. Now is also a good time to point out that in the game there’s several shots [including one I’ll be nabbing from my PS4 one of these days] that makes Jennifer look taller than Marty which is another source of endless amusement for yours truly.

This one! This one is actually a bit that might more support the view of Marty being insecure about his height. Although from my end, I can easily see it as Marty narrating to kids and- well, “runt” isn’t really something cool hero guys get called by the villain. “Thorn in my side” comes to mind as the sort of thing a villain might call a hero that sounds really cool, and as many, many instances in both the movies, game, and comics show, Marty’s a big fan of movies, TV shows, and the cool heroes within them- and, of course, the cool things they say. Runt? Runt isn’t cool. Runt does not make Marty sound like a badass to this playground full of children. He never seemed to mind much in the trilogy, but playing to your interpretation yet again, he sure did have other stuff to worry about whenever Mad Dog was around!

I SIMPLY. It’s always been really fun to me that Marty is the rare sort of short character who kind of. Really doesn’t seem to have any kind of complex about his size? If anything, it seems to cause the most problems because he isn’t often aware of how little he is in the grand scheme of things. It makes for really funny setups though, so I think that’s okay <3

“Hiiiiiii whatcha doin’?”

“I’m at work.”

“Yeah, me too, what’s your point?” She flipped her camera around to show a vast sea of sad, ugly humps huddled mournfully at their cubicles. “You start that book I loaned you?”

“I’m picking my way through it.”

“Aaaaaaand?”

“And…it’s not as terrible as I thought it would be.”

“I TOLD you!” Her bright pink fingernail prodded her camera as if she were poking Abigail between the eyebrows. “I TOLD you you would like it!”

“I don’t like it. I just don’t hate it.”

“Still my desired outcome.”

“I have to say, when you said you wanted me to read a romance novel, I thought you were giving me a drug store bodice ripper.”

“Yeaahhh they’re okay, but I get frustrated with the historical inaccuracies.” Tamika uncapped her lip gloss and dabbed the wand to her mouth. “Like, if you’re going to set your story in 18th century France you need reflect the era’s tumultuous socio-political climate DEIRDRE.”

“Uh-huh.”

“I’m way more into the Adult Contemporary Romance genre. You know, rom-coms in text form. And I knew you would like that one.”

“Never said I liked it.” Abigail paused. “Why?”

“Ohhhhhh I don’t knoooooow.” She swiveled her office chair innocently. “Beautiful workaholic heroine finds herself working on the top secret project of a beautiful workaholic celebrity? Seemed like a narrative you’d connect with.”

Her eyes narrowed. “What are you saying?”

“Nothing! Anyway what are you doing later? Wanna get drinks?”

“Kiki I am 5000 miles away.”

“So? Get that elven prince of yours to charter a jet. He can afford it.”

“He’s NOT—“ she scrambled to jam in her ear buds, leaning close to her phone and dropping her voice to a whisper, “First of all, that’s unethical.”

“Everything you’ve told me about this band and now you’re worried about ethics?”

“—Second! He’s not my anything. He’s just—he’s just a guy I work with. That’s all.”

“Uh-huh. You know, Damon used be ‘just a guy I worked with.’ But now he’s—“

“Your fiANceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!” Abigail pitched her voice high as it would go, holding up her left hand and waggling her fingers. On screen, Tamika did the same.

“—ceeeeeeeeeeeee oh. I see. You’re mocking me. I will remember this.”

The studio door whooshed open. Abigail startled, then relaxed.

“Oh, euegh, am I interrupting somet’ings?”

“No, you’re fine, I was just wrapping up.” She turned back. “I gotta go.”

Tamika’s focus had shifted. She beamed at something to her left, propping her chin on her fist.  “Same, some guy I work with is taking me to lunch.”

“Hi Abigail.”

Abigail waved, though she knew he could not see her.

“You wants to picks up where we lefts off?”

As he crossed from the threshold to the booth, Skwisgaar flitted, briefly, behind Abigail’s chair.

“IS THAT HIM?!?”

Putting in her ear buds was Abigail’s best and worst decision.

“Ohhhhhh I get it. Booked yourself a private session, huh?”

“Baby don’t be crude.”

“Sorry, baby.”

“GoodBYE!”

The screen cut to black, and the call ended.

“Dat’s a working titles. What’s dis?”

Abigail froze. Her purse had tipped over, and poking out of it was Tamika’s book.

“It’s…a recent interest.”

“What’s it abouts?”

She swept her hair off her neck. “A beautiful workaholic heroine finds herself working on the top secret project of a beautiful workaholic celebrity.” Her faces burned under his inscrutable gaze. “I’m not very far.”

“Huh.” His mouth ticked up at the corners, a sparkle in his eyes that he seemed to reserve only for her. “You lets me know how it ends, ja?”

so everyone really kinda freaked out last episode

bc they didn’t see juliet in the previews for the unit stages

she wasn’t with jongho, eunkwang and seungmin

nor was she with 3racha and joong

so that would leave the performance unit right??

atinys were desperately zooming into screenshots of the performance unit stage for any sign of our girl

and found nothing :(

even in the preview that came after the first one, she was nowhere to be seen 😔

eventually some people started theorising if it was bc mnet didn’t let her participate for whatever reason

and the truth is...drumroll please 🥁

juliet continues to laugh, hiding the lower half of her face behind her hands. “sorry, sorry, i’m not laughing at you, i promise!” she says between giggles, “i just didn’t expect us to be so nervous.”

“ah, i get shy around new people, more than what people would expect. so that’s kinda why i’m a bit awkward right now.”

“i’m like that too, but i thought we became closer friends during the sports day filming! i’m hurt!” she says, placing a hand over her heart.

“no, no, no!” jisung defends, waving his hands frantically, “we did! i’m still shy, i guess.”

“not shy, not me!” juliet sings in response, doing the hand movement in the choreography of itzy’s song.

stunned into silence by the sudden reference of his label-mates, jisung blinks at her owlishly before a loud ‘pft’ sound emits from both of them, and they dissolve into giggles once more.

“okay, okay,” she says, sobering up a little after a few seconds. “we need to do this seriously. no more being awkward! awkward is just a mindset.”

jisung’s eyes widen. “woah, you’re right. we won’t feel awkward if we just tell ourselves that we’re being cool.”

she nods approvingly. “exactly. we are cool.”

“okay then, let’s go!” he shouts enthusiastically, earning muffled snickers from the other members who are sitting off-screen.

juliet and jisung go quiet again from his outburst. she even tried to bite the inside of her cheek to stifle any laughter, but her efforts are futile as they both promptly collapse to the ground in a fit of giggles.

“i-i don’t think we can do this,” juliet wheezes to the cameras, clutching her stomach as tears gather in the corners of her eyes. beside her, jisung isn’t faring any better as he attempts to catch his breath.

off-screen, changbin playfully complains, “yah! what are you two doing? you’re supposed to be doing an interview!”

when she entered the jyp café with joong and minhyuk 3racha was like omg hiiiiiii

now that their rap unit finished performing she could sit back and enjoy the other performances!!

- but the head of the parish activities (go with it) wanted you to do a solo at the 8:00 mass

- and you agreed

- so anyway you show up

- and it's going great so far

- (spoilers: he was trying to avoid you, and he thought he was being slick by going to the next mass)

- (double spoilers: he wasn't being slick)

- he actually thought you were attractive (because you are), but thought that you thought he was creepy and weird n shit

- which you don't

- so anyway at the end of mass, you come up to him and try to start a conversation (again)

- you called him out on his lie about his parents being out in the car waiting for him

- and he was like "o shit she’s just becoming more attractive"

- by the time you're done chewing him out you're like "anyway want to smoke a blunt out back? I know a place lol"

- and he's like "oh just because I present myself as dark and brooding means I smoke weed?"

- "well don't you?"

- "... yes"

- you end up taking him to your smoke spot (if u don't smoke, then you just took him out back to talk about stuff idk I just wanted to write that interaction)

hiiiiiii among your papers there's something wrt the fact that JRRT took as inspiration for Gondor and Numenor Byzantium / Costantinople ? i was thinking about the false myth of the 'Byzantine decline' / 'Byzantine corruption' and about how such idea was widespread during the early 20th century, which makes me think if it hasn't somehow influenced how JRRT depicted the decline of Gondor and of Numenor ( not for his fault bc a lot of serious historians among his contemporaries believed blindly in the 'byzantine corruption' but still !)

hmmm not really something great so far. I'd say the one thing that touched on that was the overall terrible Tolkien and Spengler paper. @skyeventide might know about a good one.

The thing is that although I entirely disagreed with the author's conclusions and a lot of semi-casual remarks (no being influenced hy Spengler would in no way disprove racism, no something is not only racist when the author is being Evil/racist On Purpose, no environmentalism is not 'anachronistic', no you can't draw those conclusions lolol) he made as well idk you could read it for how he brings Spengler into Tolkien as a possible influence* (*though even just his lotr argument is significantly weakened by apparently not grasping that the isolation of lothlorien elves is not a good thing in tolkien? it's damn weird).

anyway I feel like i have to link this 1939(!) essay on Spengler and the Third Reich if I'm going to mention that paper lol. tldr no spengler not a nazi but probably not a good writer to bring up as an influence if you want to paint tolkien as free of the racism common in his time + class (it being common of course in no way not making him capable of critically examining his own prejudices-- let's have more respect for people than to 'man of his time' them, especially when said time also contained people who did so more effectively!).

ALSO aside from his whole empire/west in decline thing I think his remark about Minas Tirith being ~ the latitude of Florence might be relevant? He did also say Pelargir should be pictured at the latitude of Troy.

So... yes ideas about decline and corruption probably come into it when he mentions Byzanthium (I think he says as much when he mentions Byzanthium specifically? Not sure now), but something to keep in mind might be the fact that he described Gondorians as dark haired and their cities as located in an imaginary Mediterranean. I feel like it's often and/and with Tolkien but what do I know
