Yes, Karla Ortiz and other big popular artists in her group in the anti-ai art scene are basically pro-capitalist grifters.

They helped with + promoted nightshade n glaze (made by UCLA and Chicago Uni), and established part of the narrative surrounding these tools as "solutions" while barely understanding it; so this groups' influence on these discussions can't be understated too.

(Am going to focus mainly on Karla Ortiz tho) The popular artist groups in question established:

The "Concept Artist Association" as a non-profit org in september 2022, with little transparency. This does not trustworthy. It used to also be a private LLC.

Made gofundme of $270k us dollar for part of class action lawsuit and lobbying, "protecting artists from AI technologies", while hiring and become part of Copyright Alliance (with notorious members such as Adobe, Disney, UMG). These tactics are known for making the lives of artists and creators hell (example: the many comic artists, writers, illsutrators, musicians that don't own their stuff n can't make anything of their creations IP because it's owned by Disney, or Marvel, or Nintendo now.)

Has supported and followed other "pro-artists" that try to extend this crusade of being against "art stealing" and "copyright stealing", to the Internet Archive being a menace. And gave support to others' efforts to shut down Internet Archive's library book lending, using same rhetoric. Synonymizing "book publishers" and big companies with "creators". (Though atm, only have 1 foto abt it on hand bc it's been a while)

Those professional popular artists have been criticized by smaller artists as copyright expansion benefits bigger rich artists while harming small ones n those that don't have resources to go against giants like Disney.

In the case of Karla Ortiz, she is known to do whatever benefits her as a big creator n barely listens to smaller artists. Support of NFTs, pro-capitalism pro-copyright, anti-archival, being generally reactionary about art. Whatever.

Obviously, with nightshade and glaze specifically, there are other criticisms to be made. like the apps' high requirements to run thus inaccessible to many, the technology and premise being outdated, this barely affecting the "big companies" people are worried about, the users' not understanding how any of this works, the doomscroll spiraling n fearmongering that many of its users do (inducing panic attacks in some artists about their "art is going to be stolen" bc they can't glaze their work).

Honestly, it gets very repetitive and it is very easy for people to start being anti-piracy classists (example: "don't pirate banned books even when it's by definition not accessible to you bc it's stealing from authors" is a common one) + anti-archival and pro-copyright when someone frames things a certain way, even when basically grifting and harming. Its a whole overarching cycle.

Maybe i'm in the minority but I don't like when people use the 'it's just pixels' argument when they denounce antis for bullying people. It has the same (lack of) weight as the 'nfts can just be copied and pasted and or saved' argument. Everything someone makes and posts online is pixels, if you read constant death threats that too is 'just pixels'. But it obviously has weight. So it feels like a really bad argument because it applies to some things but clearly not others. 'Concepts' is better.

You are totally welcome to feel that way, but first I will say intent is different. (Also fuck nfts) second death threats are legal in the US which is where a majority of these people and the websites they use are hosted so that's a big difference. Concepts can also be misused in a variety of ways. I personally use fiction. But everyone will have terms they prefer and why. Use the words you prefer but trying to nit pick at the words others use will always be a losing battle.

Ultimately there will be a problem with every word and antis will always find a way to use it against you.

From what I understand, the major concerns about the new OGL are these three things - making the previous version unauthorized, royalties on revenue and “nonexclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, sub-licensable, royalty-free license to use the creator's content for any purpose.”

There's obviously some bad faith groups stirring things up on Twitter but you have to admit, this is pretty bad for the growth of the hobby right?

Like again, not a lawyer nor personally a creative but from my talks with people who have worked with copyright law that is straight up boilerplate for open licenses: if you use our stuff for free to create your stuff and then make money off it, we get to use your stuff for free. (Critical Role had something similar in their updated license, because, again, standard-issue legal shit, and everyone freaked out then too about how it would kill the fandom, like, I'm not a lawyer but I do pay attention to patterns.)

Royalties on revenue, similar. Like. I do not understand how this is an issue. Would I love a world in which there is a such thing as a free lunch? Of course! Do I acknowledge that is rarely the case and particularly not expect that from major corporations? Yes. And the royalties start for companies making over $750,000, so I would think it's actually great for the growth of smaller niche upstarts in the space, and has no effect on free fan content.

The one thing I do have an eye on is making prior versions unauthorized; but I suspect that is to permit them to focus on material that would violate 1.1 in terms of such things as well, NFTs or that is “blatantly racist, sexist, homophobic, trans-phobic, bigoted or otherwise discriminatory.” (incidentally, someone replied on an earlier post of mine saying the anti-bigotry could be twisted...this is the text, per the io9 article here, so hopefully that helps clarify.)

to start, i was obsessed and i loved him and i would gush over him because i was blissfuly unaware. at the time i did not know he was homophobic, transphobic and anti-furry and he wasn't about to reveal himself as such cause he obviously knew where my views were on those topics (and didnt care) and was having a great time manipulating me. he only started saying stuff after he had lost interest in me and that's what made me lose interest in him. /gen /srs

we used to formerly be best friends and he used to talk to me every day and all i knew about him basically was that he was a really fun guy who was rlly into art (like we would both talk about how we hated nfts and i assumed he was ok with furries. i think he knew i drew furries too so we were okay)

though i wasnt aware at the time he would manipulate me for his own benefit in ways i rlly didnt realize; he would do something flirty with me and brag about it to his friends (in front of me) and i didnt know how to process and understand it and i assumed that he liked me, because he was very flirty around me and he did things that would make me assume that he really liked me. we were basically in a situationship so i consider him my ex even though i never announced it (my homophobic parents dont believe in relationships before college! shocker. so that would have gotten me in massive trouble.)

he figured me out easy. he would do really sweet and flirty things and a lot of physical touch, he would text me and ask how i was doing, i could vent to him and he would vent to me and he would take the time to sit down with me and help me or talk with me. since forever nobody really cared about because i was the social outcast and since there were only 3 girls, everybody flocked around my 2 friends because they were pretty and they were overtly "girly" (and remember this is a christian community. though most of my friends are very respectful, i'm an alt tomboy so you can see how this goes) and my ex gravitated towards talking with me instead of them. and i don't get social cues and i couldn't figure out he was manipulating me the entire time

so we were in the same fandoms, talked about lotr and art and animation a lot. i thought we shared the same views on lgbtq and furries and everything cause there were times he would talk about his lgbtq+ friends and defend them and he was planning to be apart of the twitter art community when he could get a tablet

well he entered his last year of middle school (1 year younger than me) and more and more stuff started to happen. he would ignore me, he would kind of push me out of his life, then he said stuff that really made me raise an eyebrow and i completely lost feelings for him. basically i found out over time he was a bigoted manipulator who played a part to kind of befriend me and use me and make me happy until he got bored of me. literally after i started to finally process this, we had a fight cause he said something nasty about me and that fight basically announced i was done with him.

and to top it off, he started going to my cousin and doing the same thing he did to me. talking about her favorite topics, finding common ground, acting all flirty with her. he lost interest quick when he found out she didn't feel that way about him and now he's just kind of dormant. i still see him every week and i'm good friends with his brother (and his entire family). he basically ignores me

my parents know about this to an extent. i told them we liked each other and he would text me but nothing about flirting or physical touch or any of that. i also told them he manipulated me but they refuse to believe me and instead they believe him! shocker

New EU regulations will compel Apple to allow alternative app stores and programs without requiring users to go via its App Store, which is a gain for creators of cryptocurrency-related apps. In order to comply with new anti-monopolistic regulations from the European Union (EU), tech giant Apple is preparing to allow third-party app stores on its devices.

This may be considered a significant gain for crypto and NFT app developers, at least in Europe. According to a Dec.13 Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter, under the new regulations, European customers would be able to download alternative app marketplaces outside of Apple’s exclusive App Store, enabling them to download apps that avoid Apple’s 30% commissions and app restrictions. Apple now has strict guidelines for NFT apps that essentially require users to make in-app purchases subject to a 30% fee from Apple, while apps are not allowed to facilitate cryptocurrency payments.

The self-custody wallet app update from Coinbase was blocked on December 1st as a result of Apple’s enforcement of its regulation because Apple planned to “capture 30% of the gas price” through in-app sales, which is “obviously not possible,” according to Coinbase. The next accusation was that if NFT transactions couldn’t be completed through Apple’s in-app purchase mechanism, Apple wanted the wallet to deactivate them. In reaction to the report that a “crypto app store” may be created and would be a “wonderful candidate” for a venture capital-backed firm, Alex Salnikov, co-founder of NFT marketplace Raible, tweeted on December 13.

In response to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which seeks to control so-called “gatekeepers” and guarantee that platforms behave fairly, Apple has decided to open its ecosystem. One of the measures allows “third parties to inter-operate with the gatekeeper’s own services.” Businesses must completely comply by May 2024 and it will take effect in May 2023. Apple hasn’t made up its mind on whether or not it would abide by a provision of the Act that permits developers to integrate alternate payment methods within programs that don’t involve Apple.

who gets to decide where the line is drawn between copying somebody and stealing their success, copying somebody with the intent of stealing but there's no effect so who really cares (see: teenagers on deviantart tracing official anime art and claiming they came up with it and getting 0 attention), sopying somebody in homage, and copying somebody as a perfectly benevolent form of art (see: tracing guns from reference)? wheres the line between transformative and stealing? between Enough credit and Not enough credit? between "that was a fucked up thing to do" and "they deserved it" (see: copy/pasting nfts)? joking and serious?

Okay so-

Costa, in essence, is Spiro’s younger cousin, being the son of Spiro’s mom’s sister. He is significantly younger and idolizes Spiro (less in the way of idolizing him specifically and moreso his class position) as the only ‘successful’ member of their family. They didn't spend much time together when they were younger, but Costa was an only child, so Spiro (the next youngest in the family at the time) was often who he stuck around with at family gatherings.

He’s kinda puny, not particularly assertive and out-of-his-depth in the criminal world, he cares more about the idea of power and wealth than actually doing anything with it. He also has an ego up to high heaven and thinks of himself as better than other people, if he works for ‘the man’ and proves himself, he’ll be able to be in Spiro’s position one day, etc. He would buy an NFT despite having no actual idea what it is.

Obviously, Spiro keeps him as far away from Fission Chips as possible, but Costa does hold the Honored Privilege of being the only other member of the Spiro family Jon talks to. Jon used to be stuck babysitting him as a teenager and in some ways he still kinda feels like he's stuck keeping him out of trouble. Realizing 'Cos' could be useful, Jon paid his way through higher education, mostly as a ‘fuck you’ to his parents (who were anti-college). He did this specifically telling Costa that Costa would ‘owe him one day’.

Costa taking on plastic surgery to be Spiro’s double was him paying that favor back.

Costa thinks it’s rad pretending to be Spiro for the grand total of like… a day, before the heist happens. His thumb still bothers him sometimes and he doesn’t know why…

Other small notes:

Post-surgery, the best ways to tell them apart is that Costa's eyes are lighter (possibly green for symbolism's sake) and he cuts his facial hair differently. He styles his hair more and wears light colors (but not pure white).

Gets along really well with Pex and Chips and LOVES that they'll do his bidding just as easily as they'll do Spiro's.

As much as he idolizes his cousin he would backstab him, probably. It just runs in their family.
