Review: âMy Investing Journey and Learningâ by Carmen Mundt
Qualifications: Iâm a journalist reporting on business, economics, and defense whoâs been in the industry for 7 years â the last 3 have been at, debatably, the #1 business publication in the world.
Rating: 2/5 stars
Thoughts: I cannot believe I spent 39 euros on this.
This 39 page ebook provides incredibly basic information that can all be found in this article.
First: while the ebook is about 40 pages, it probably has about 10 pages of actual information in it, interspersed with inspirational quotes from Sheryl Sandberg and Warren Buffet, with some pictures of Carmen in Monaco.
Thereâs about 1 page of âintroductionâ from Carmen that talks about her upbringing and journey to university in London. I wonât comment too much on her personal story, but an important thing to note is that she says she came from a âtraditional Spanish householdâ where her father was the breadwinner and her mother had no access to family finances. After the 2008 crash, her family couldnât afford to send her to college. She moved to London, applied for a student loan, and began studying finance at a university while working part time.
Carmen very, very briefly mentioned her regrets as to her motherâs inability to access higher education, work, and family financial planning; she says sheâd never want to be in that position. While literally only one sentence, I think it makes it clear who the audience for this ebook is: someone who has absolutely, positively, no idea about money.
(She also very, very briefly mentions âbig changes in her personal lifeâ that made a full-time job in finance ânot sustainable,â leading to her move to Monaco. This is her only reference to George.)
The rest of the book very simply explains how to make a budget, set financial goals, invest in the stock market, and mitigate risk. The information was kinda factually correct, and was written in a coherent manner. I think thatâs the highest praise I can give it.
Hereâs the thing: like other reviewers have called out, I am pretty certain that Carmen didnât write anything besides the introduction. Whole sections (and indeed the entire format of the ebook) were clearly ripped from the Female Invest introductory courses. (I spent 3 hours clicking through each course so I could find direct wording comparisons to make this claim. I really wouldnât recommend it.) I do think she edited these sections, and she interjected a few personal sentences; but I believe thatâs where her involvement ended.
From an expert perspective, a lot of the information is so simplistic as to be almost incorrect. This isnât a âfirst day of Econ 101â ebook â this is a âfreshman year of high school home ec classâ ebook. (Did anyone elseâs home ec classes teach budgeting, or just me?)
Hereâs an example. In a section on stocks, Carmen/Female Invest writes: âInvesting in stocks allows you to support companies and causes you care about while still making a profit.â
On a basic level, this is correct. Purchasing a stock technically means youâre buying a little bit of a company, and I guess therefore supporting it. But unless a company is IPOing, youâre buying those stocks from another investor â which means your purchase has no effect on the company. So itâs a little disingenuous to claim youâre somehow helping the company. The ebook is rife with this kind of thing.
Carmen pushed in her advertising posts that the Female Invest courses were a key supplement to her book. So obviously, I had to do those too. And holy shit, they were so much worse than the ebook. Some parts were blatantly incorrect on basic information (they claim markets are open 24/7, when most are only open 9am-4:30pm on weekdays) and have some of the most patronizing metaphors I have ever read. (One of the most egregious was comparing your investment portfolio to a pizza because âstocks, bonds, and ETFsâ make up different âsizes of slices to make a whole pieâ. This isnât even an accurate equivalent â maybe a calzone, pasta, and pizza make up a whole meal? I donât even know.)
I would not recommend buying this ebook unless you, too, were barred from even thinking about a stock by your traditional father. Even then, consider free sources.
A Disclaimer on disclosures: So, after @ohblimeygeorge sent me a reddit post also reviewing Carmenâs book that mentioned ad disclosures, I decided to dive into the regulations. In the U.S., influential advertising is regulated by the FTC â in the EU, itâs regulated by the EU Commission, which I believe Carmen would qualify under since she is a Spanish citizen who lives in Monaco. First, I looked at this legal brief on content monetization business models, and concluded that that the ebook likely falls under âaffiliate marketingâ as Carmen likely receives a percentage of each ebook sold through her link.
(An additional disclaimer: obviously, I donât know the details of the deal Carmen has with Female Invest, but Iâd think it unlikely that she isnât getting paid for their collaboration. She mentioned in an Instagram story under her Female Invest highlight that she âtried purchasing equity but they were already too big for what I could affordâ but âdid buy a bit of their crowdfunding.â Since she doesnât have equity, i.e. doesnât own a piece of the company, itâd be weird if she was doing this for free.)
Back on topic. I next looked at this legal brief on advertising disclosures. It states that affiliate marketing must be disclosed: âyou need to make sure your audiences understand that itâs advertising.â Disclosures can include hashtags and âmentioningâ advertising in the caption. Carmen has not disclosed advertising in any of her Female Invest posts, and appears to be violating this regulation. (Interestingly, her only posts that follow disclosure requirements are her Tommy posts.)
Itâs apparently not uncommon. An EU Commission study showed 80% of influencers in the EU do not properly disclose ads.
So, thereâs that too.
#I spent waaaaaay too long doing female invest courses for this#I was just horrified and couldnât stop!!#my verdict#unfortunately#is that this IS the equivalent of a weight loss ebook peddled by an ig baddie#disappointing but I suppose unsurprising#happy to answer more questions if u message me!#george russell#carmen montero mundt#carmen mundt

Clearly youâve got a lot of opinions abt the characterisations of the batfam in fandom /pos
Can you elaborate on your interpretation for all of them? /gen
itâs called caring too much â and itâs incurable! wrt my personal interpretation, that's a long and complicated answer, so ill just focus on the internal character of the waynes (specifically bruce and his five canonical kids).
bruce wayne is a control freak, we know this. his parents were killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and he has literally never ever been able to truly process it. the degree to which he is controlling - firing robins, survelling his allies without their consent, compiling personal information from others, disregarding others feelings in favour of his own - is all about trying to achieve the best possible outcome. everything he does is justified, because if he's in control then he can stop bad things from happening. it is all in favour of the greater good. it's the logic of an eight year old who's just lost everything and hasn't grown up.
if bruce's trauma manifests control then dick's manifests personal perfectionism. he holds himself to such an absurd standard because he's a flier - when you're catching someone on the trapeze you quite literally have to be there, always, ready to take their hand. if you don't, they fall. if there's no net, if dick isn't the net, then they die. heâs always swinging back out and in again, waiting for the next person to slip through his fingers. he does not fear falling, only what will happen when he hits the ground. heâs a born performer made to be an atlas, carrying an unbearable weight that anchors him to the earth.
jason after death is a tragedy of his own creation, and dc's worst crime is trying to justify the terrible decisions he makes. jason isnât right, because what he wants is not about protecting other kids from his fate or being a better batman. he wants to be personally vindicated, even though he knows it's impossible. jason rejected himself, bruce, everything, in order to transform into a weapon to enact violence. deep down he's so angry, so hurt, that he'll go after other children - tim, damian, mia - and still decry bruce in the same breath. killing the joker, killing bruce, killing dick, killing every robin before or since won't take him back to who he was before. you cannot go back. you can never go back.
cass sees everything. she can't unsee it, she can't ignore it, nothing in the body can be truly hidden from her, but like bruce that doesn't mean she's always right. she killed a man and witnessed his death, and thus will never take another life. she is all knowing, but she was not born knowing herself. she's jason in reverse â she turns from steel to flesh and bone. she will do whatever it takes to be good. she has made herself real.
tim chose this life in the most literal sense of the word, and then kept choosing it. itâs his duty, itâs his honour, it has hollowed him out and left nothing behind. his tethers to the world snap one by one â janet and jack and darla and dana and steph and kon â and suddenly itâs much harder to extricate himself from the black. robin, dick grayson, is his guiding north star, but his north star is only human. he knows he is capable, he knows this is his choice, and he knows he has long since lost the chance to unchoose.
damian is raised in the shadow of the bat. he is born of blood. he knew death before he knew his father. he is a child. he is ancient. he is a killer. he only wants to do good. he loves his mother. his father is gone before he learns to love damian. damian loves someone else who wears the bat but does not carry wayne name. everything he knows about himself is questioned â robin is given to him, and suddenly he can decide his own fate, make his own family. he wants to be the best, but he doesnât know what he wants that to mean anymore. he wants the chance to find out.
#sorry this got long! not sure if i actually answered ur question lol#batfam#dick grayson#bruce wayne#jason todd#tim drake#cassandra cain#damian wayne#nightwing#batgirl#batman#dc comics#the ask and the answer#dc meta#ig?

What do you think about the scene in ep1 where Shauna masturbates on her daughters bed while looking at pictures of her boyfriend? Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I found it disturbingly similar to younger Shauna sleeping with Jackie's boyfriend
Oh hey, so this response is like perhaps over a year late but someone else asked me about this and I remembered I had 3/4 of this response drafted so hi Iâm here now lmao
Anon, I do NOT think youâre overthinking this scene. I actually think there is so much room to think about this scene that a thesis could be written on it. Itâs so layered and an incredibly bold choice on the showâs part to include it. It is our introduction to adult Shauna, and I think that the creators of the show clearly felt that it was very important.
This scene made me so uncomfortable as a first time casual viewer that I actually tried to rationalize it away. I remember saying aloud to the person I was watching with âNo, that has to be her own childhood bedroom, right? She must be, like, visiting her aging parents?â Clearly I was ignoring the very ridiculous set design of Callieâs room entirely lol, but my mind wanted to find a different explanation. And it took me a while to come around to really loving Shauna as a first time viewer of the show, in part due to how much that scene shocked me.
All that to say, it is absolutely reasonable to find yourself very uncomfortable when thinking about that scene, as many people say that they do when theyâre proclaiming that they wish it didnât exist in the show. But I donât think that means the scene should be ignored by any means. That discomfort is the point of the scene. Shauna is such a fascinating character, because she swings back and forth from shockingly depraved and cruel, to heartbreakingly kind and loving. She draws both the audience AND the other characters into this unpredictable back and forth with her, and it is easy for us AND them to forget what she is truly capable of when she is in one of her sweeter moments. That is what makes her one of the most fascinating characters of all time to me.
Okay, now we can get into my personal interpretation of this scene. I have always felt it was about Jackie. I think that was clear early on, but, after s2 aired, having more information about Shaunaâs relationship with Callie did impact my interpretation of the scene and solidify some suspicions I had.
Shauna clearly does not see Callie as her daughter in any traditional sense. She tells Lottie as much, that she never could fully believe Callie was real and hers. And we see, with increasing clarity as the show goes on, that Shauna views Callie as a peer more than anything. Shauna has both stunted development and difficulty expressing affection. We see her tell Callie that it wouldâve been easier if she HAD just had sex with the cop. Thatâs a very strong indicator of their dynamic. Shauna just doesnât have the capacity to mother Callie.
That is important context because, with the scene in Callieâs bedroom, Shauna is recreating the thing she used to do when she was young and Jackie was alive. I donât think she is even thinking about the fact that itâs her daughterâs boyfriend or bedroom, because she doesnât even really think of Callie as her daughter much of the time. Itâs so complex and muddled and, you guessed it, uncomfortable!
In my opinion, people are NOT ready for the intricacies of the ways Callie is a Jackie proxy for Shauna to be developed further. Like the show is establishing it pretty heavily, and I think in a very compelling way, but if it goes down that road more explicitly I have a feeling that people are not going to be able to separate the WAYS in which Shauna sees Jackie in her, if that makes sense.
I think s2 did have some compelling threads of this. Shauna caring for the Jackie corpse doll and getting frustrated and âhurtingâ her with the ear coming off scene. Shauna not being able to protect her, initiating and endorsing the consumption of her, then hinting at having fears that sheâd hurt the baby when she was pregnant, losing the baby, worrying that theyâd do to the baby what they did to Jackie, twisting it so much that she canât help but believe they ate the baby too.
She associated the baby with Jackie very heavily. And in doing so, I think she parentified herself to Jackie in a really fascinating way, like Jackie was her first failure.
If she couldnât care properly for Jackie, who loved her so much (and became an actual martyr and saint to her), and she couldnât care for her children who were absolute innocents, then she must be the epitome of horrible and she should squash those caring instincts bc clearly they arenât actually Good, type shit. Thatâs how I feel like Shauna spirals into her destructive behavior.
So what happens here, imo, is that Shauna doesnât really see any of her relationships clearly. I donât think she consciously thinks of Jackie as The Girl She Was In Love With, and I donât think she consciously thinks of Callie as her daughter most of the time. Shauna just thinks of them both as people she has loved and failed, as well as people who piss her the fuck off and make her feel trapped in a life she doesnât want.
She sees a lot of Jackie in Callie, and she acts out in really horrifying ways throughout the entire show to try and gain control, and this scene is one of them. Shauna has always used sex as a way to reclaim control, even when it is absolutely insanely inappropriate, and often when it isnât at all about actual pleasure. We see more of this in s2, when she BRINGS JEFF TO THE ART STUDIO OF THE MAN SHE KILLED AND FUCKS HIM THERE (that was fucking INSANELY risky and destructive). With masturbating on Callieâs bed, looking at a pic of her bf, Shauna is acting from the same place she was when taking Jeff from Jackie in a way, and I get why thatâs uncomfortable to watch. It makes me incredibly uncomfortable, it is SUPPOSED to!
But I think that we are viewing it with so much more logic and thought than Shauna is capable of applying. We draw conclusions from it that are based on a sane person, and Shauna is far from that. I think Shauna is briefly recreating multiple feelings and motivations that drove her to sleep with Jeff as a teenager. The sexual side of things is so wholly Jackie driven, she is constantly seeking ways to feel the way she felt when she was creating that proxy sexual connection with Jackie that she verbatim discusses with Jeff (which is so crazy btw not over that scene). But the side that relates to Callie is driven purely by the frustration and anger. Again, I donât think Shauna has consciously thought about ANY of it, but if I had to interpret the driving emotions, then I think those would be the most likely.
And I think what it says about Shauna is that she is not living in reality in the slightest. You can not overstate the lack of conscious thought that goes into her actions when she does these things. She is acting on pure impulse, and without any certainty that anything is actually real.
She breaks my heart and this convo about the masturbation scene is so interesting to me because YEAH, that was a ROUGH introduction! and it took me rewatches to allow myself to dig into her character and thatâs the point tbh.
On instinct, people either see the actions clearly and hate her, or obscure them to the point of forgetting they happened and love her. But itâs much harder to reckon with them and dig in and come out still loving her.
(I truly canât believe I have to say this, but I was recently introduced to the fact that yj incest shippers exist, so disclaimer: this is NOT meant to be taken as a romantic or sexual interpretation of Shauna and Callieâs relationship at all. In fact, when I say that I donât think people are ready for detangling the WAYS in which Shauna sees Jackie in Callie this is exactly what I mean. I just assumed people would wrongly assume it was That and be horrified. I didnât consider the opposite, and I would like to continue not considering the opposite, so I will prob block anyone who engages with this in that way simply bc I do not want to see it and this is my social media lol)

I know nobody asked, but I just spent an hour of my life researching this, so have it ig?
To the best I can figure, hereâs a very rough timeline of the interesting points in Houseâs life, leading to S1:
1991: Wilson and House meet at a medical convention in New Orleans
1994: House meets Stacy in a game of paintball with Lawyers v Doctors
1995: House gets the Esther case (on wiki the exact words are âin or around 1994â and I like to think that this case, which kinda screwed with House a bit, was a stepping stone in the Stacy/House relationship
1996: House is hired at PPTH by Cuddy
1996/1997: Wilson is hired at PPTH through a suggestion by House ( Wilson could have actually been hired basically at any point after House was hired until S1, 2004, but me thinks this is just the prime time for Wilson to be hired bc then within the two years, he marries Bonnie and spends his entire time with House after the infarction)
1999: The Infarction and Stacyâs leaving
2002: Chase is hired onto the House team after a call by his father
2004: 6 months before the start of S1, Cameron was brought into to the team and three days before, Forman was hired.
#This all came from the question I had#âWhen was House hired at PPTH?â#I found conflicting answers on all of these#And others pulled from Wiki#But none of these dates are in one spot on the internet#So yk#house md#greg house#House backstory ig

"And what about all these orcs? By the end of the war, Sauron is gone but all of the orcs arenât gone â theyâre in the mountains. Did Aragorn pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby orcs, in their little orc cradles? The war that Tolkien wrote about was a war for the fate of civilization and the future of humanity, and thatâs become the template. Iâm not sure that itâs a good template, though. The Tolkien model led generations of fantasy writers to produce these endless series of dark lords and their evil minions who are all very ugly and wear black clothes. But the vast majority of wars throughout history are not like that."
People often parade the "what was aragorn's tax policy" as a famous grrm quote, but often ignore this one which follows, which is way more interesting and reflects better the priorities of George as a writer. And it's even more interesting how the man himself proceeded to answer to this question with Elden Ring, specifically with Marika's backstory and her subsequent genocide of the Hornsent.
Marika herself seems to be the character that's hero whose journey has long ended, the little girl whose village got razed and came back for vengeance against the evil, demonic looking overlords who killed her family and stuck them in jars. But, this time, we are shown full on her vengeance, she did pursue a policy of genocide, she had pacific churches that had nothing to do with the jarring of shamans, cause old women to be imprisoned and battered t best (and at worse SA'd if you intepret the Grandam's lines in that way), and have baby hornsent in their little hornsent cradles (as the Hornsent dialogue that plays if you don't summon him for Messmer says). We are fully shown the length that the hero's "rightful vengeance" and "reconciliation of the land", and by lord above if it isn't an awful, brutal one

Ghostlight!
"You came?" "You called."
Danny in trouble, Duke to the rescue! (Or it can be reversed!) Maybe they've been online friends or met in person once and bonded over both having all these unexpected powers. Slightly angst.
There was never a point when Danny thought he would need the panic button Duke gave him.
It was a sweet gesture, a way for Duke to show that he cared for Danny and wanted him to be safe. Never mind that Danny can take care of himself, heals quickly from most wounds, and has been the protector, not the protected, ever since the Accident. If it makes Duke feel better, than Danny was more than happy to keep it on him as a token of affection.
The cultists, however, caught him off guard.Â
Danny would be embarrassed about being nabbed off the streets so easily if the people who took him werenât cultists lead by the daughter of a GIW agent, one who disapproved of the scientific approach the GIW took towards ectoplasmic entities and had turned to mystic arts as a way to defy her father. Which, usually, Danny would be all for striking out against the strict expectations of parents and their unwillingness to listen to their kids in any serious manner, but not this time. Not when it ends with him slowly waking up after they chloroformed him, curled up in some magic circle, surrounded by black candles and blue flame, and something in the air that smells of blood blossoms.
There are voices speaking, but he canât make out what theyâre saying over the pounding in his head, his heartbeat stuttering in his chest with each gasping breath he takes.Â
Whatever theyâre doing, whateverâs got him bound in the circle, makes his blood feel like its been lit aflame, agony coursing through his veins. He tries to grit his teeth and bare it, but it doesnât become any more manageable.
No, it gets worse the longer heâs awake.
Danny tries to move, tries to get to his feet, but all he can do is curl up tighter, a sob forcing its way out of his throat.
âI know youâve got some connection to Phantom,â he hears someone say, both by his ear and so far away he can barely make out the words. Danny whines, trying to insist that theyâre wrong, heâs got nothing to do with phantom, but the voice continues. âCome on, cooperate with us and this will end sooner for you. You canât lie about this; you wouldnât be feeling anything if there was no connection.âÂ
A hand brushes against his forehead, burning hot, and Danny turns his face towards the ground trying to move away from it.Â
âI knew ghosts had to have some tie to the living world. And a living anchor would make the ghost stronger⌠If only dad would listen to me.â The voice sighs, and the words help him put the pieces together and realize this is the daughter of the GIW agent that came closest to finding him when he first ran to Gotham.Â
Itâs been close to a year since then. He thought theyâd stopped looking.Â
Really, he should have known better.
The hand leaves his forehead and he hears the leader bark out an order. Voices surround him, chanting, as they rise out of the dark.Â
A red glow begins to fall on everything, enough that Danny can see it through his barely open eyes. A shudder runs through him, and he feels his transformation try to begin.
NO, he thinks desperately. He tries to force it down but it fights against him. Itâs agony, pain on a molecular level, the feeling of dying over and over and over again.
NO, he thinks, STOP I DONâT WANT TO DIE SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME.
And then, unbidden, a single word rising in his mind. Duke.
Duke will help him if he knows Danny needs help. Duke has been kind and welcoming and helped Danny find his footing in Gotham, never judging and always quietly offering a hand in support. Heâs the person Dannyâs closest to in Gotham, someone dear to him, a light in the dark.Â
He gave Danny a panic button.
Contrary to popular thought, Danny isnât an idiot. He knows Duke is the Signal. A few too many incidents where Duke had disappeared and the Signal appeared to save him tipped him off. It didnât help that Duke acted the same in and out of costume, and he always, always grabbed Danny first at the elbow, then slid his hand down to his wrist.Â
Besides, who else gives panic buttons to their friends? Danny would have done the same to Sam and Tucker if they werenât always attached at the hip. Heâs a (former) teenage vigilante too, he knows how being involved in this kind of thing invites trouble into the rest of his life.
Duke can help him. Heâs a hero. Heâs saved Danny before.
Heâs his friend. Danny trusts (wants to trust, so badly) that Duke will help him even when heâs not fully human, fully alive.
With trembling hands, he reaches into his jacket, to the panic button. Itâs a simple necklace with an unassuming metal rectangle dangling off of it. Itâs flat and thin, but the top gives way to a button that Danny clicks three times in quick succession.Â
He waits a moment, trying to breathe through the pain, and clicks it three times again.
Please hurry, Duke, he thinks, hand falling limply to the ground.Â
âLetâs try this, instead,â the leader says, and the chanting falls to a quiet murmur to give way to her voice as she begins reciting something.
It starts at his feet. They cramp up suddenly, then pain crackles up his bones like lightning, digging deep into him. It feels as if a thousand knives dig into his abdomen, cutting in deep and twisting.
Danny chokes on his breath, then screams, trying futilely to scramble away. All it does is make him writhe on the ground, back arching enough that he can feel the strain of it on his spine, but it doesnât matter because heâs forcing down his transformation again, smothering Phantom as much as he can.
His breath mists out before him. His fingers go numb, frost spreading across the floor.
Tears slip down his face as Danny pants for breath.
It hurts. It hurts like nothing has ever hurt before, but he refuses to give in. If they find out heâs Phantom, theyâll only do worse.Â
Please, he thinks again, deliriously.
As if hearing him, a window shatters above him and the cultists break off in screams.Â
Forcing his eyes open, Danny squints through he tears and watches as the shadows around them rise up, roiling, and crash against the cultists. The force of it knocks them down, leaving them to claw desperately at their faces as the shadows cover their nose and mouths, cutting off their air. The leader is yelling, rage clear in her voice, shooting out magic spells at the Signal.
The Signal is usually a friendly figure. Heâs safe, something whose meer presence makes people feel safe. His smile means everythingâs alright and when itâs directed to Danny, he feels like nothing bad can ever happen to him again.
The Signal isnât smiling now.Â
Heâs furious, expressionless and stone cold, bashing away the spells with shadows or light, advancing on the leader like an avenging angel come to deliver justice.Â
He takes her out with hard hits, striking methodically. Itâs not quick. She doesnât get the kindness of being knocked out; no, he snaps a wrist, breaks her nose, slams her down on the ground and cuts off her air with a knee until her struggles die off and sheâs left limp on the floor.Â
When he rises, surrounded by shadows still moving restlessly, illuminated only by the flicker blue flames of the candles, he should look terrifying.Â
All Danny feels is relief so sharp it worries him that his chest was cleaved in half without him noticing until now. He shivers against the floor, too weak to reach out to the Signal.
Itâs a good thing he doesnât have to.Â
The Signal picks him up with careful hands, checking him over for injuries.
âDuke,â Danny murmurs, slurring a bit. The torture is definitely at fault for it, but the sudden absence of all that pain doesnât help him sound any more coherent. âYou came.â
âYou called,â Duke says, âOf course I came. Iâve been looking for you for hours. You never showed up for our study date and I know you always try to reach out if you canât make it. Iâm just sorry I didnât find you sooner.â
âSâokay, âm not mad. Was scared, but you made it better. The panic buttonâŚâ
âItâs how I found you. Iâm so glad you were wearing it today.â
Danny tries to smile, but the most he can manage is a twitch of his lips before his head tips forward to rest against Dukeâs armored shoulder. âI always wear it.â
Dukeâs grip on him tightens for a moment, then he begins walking, taking Danny away from the magic circles and the prone bodies of the cultists who had watched him be tortured and decided to keep going. Danny shudders again, his entire body aching. His transformation is still fighting to come out, but itâs not as strong anymore.Â
âLetâs get out of here,â Duke says into his ear. âIâll take you to the hospital.â
âNo! No hospitals, please. I canât let them know⌠theyâll find meâŚâ
Duke shushes him soothingly, tucking him more securely against his chest. âAlright, Danny. No hospitals. But I am going to call Batman for a pick up to get you to one of the people we trust for medical care.â
âBut Batman doesnât work in the day.â Dannyâs too exhausted to sound confused, but it must go through anyways. Duke laughs lowly, and the sound helps unwind the last of his nerves coiled up tight in fear.Â
âDanny, itâs well into the night. You were gone for hours. Longest hours of my life.â
âSorry,â he mumbles,Â
âDonât be, itâs not your fault. Hang on, Batmanâs nearly here.â
In any other circumstance, Danny would be excited to meet another hero. Especially Batman, one of the original heroes of the modern age. But all he wants is to go somewhere safe so he can curl up and cry, then sleep for three days before he pretends to be a normal human again. Ideally, heâd stay with Duke until he felt safe again, but he doesnât want to take Duke away from the city that needs him.
His ears perk up a bit when he hears the smooth rumble of an engine stop in front of them. A door opens with a click without Duke needing to grab the handle, and then Danny is carefully being deposited in the back seat.
âWait,â he says, trying to grab for Dukeâs arm only to have his fingers fumble and grab nothing. Duke doesnât move away, though, and instead grabs Dannyâs seeking hand. âStay? Please? I justââ his voice shudders, cracks, fractures apart. âI just want to feel safe.â
Thereâs a pause, a stillness in the air, before Duke says, âOkay. Iâll stay.â And then heâs sliding into the backseat, pulling Danny in to lean against him, curl into his embrace.
âSignal,â Batmanâs low, gravelly voice says. Thereâs something in his tone that makes Danny tense up, prepared to take off, and his transformation pushes at his skin, ready to come out.
âHe knows who I am, B,â Duke replies. âHeâs trustworthy. Besides, just because he knows me doesnât mean he knows you.â
âWe will be discussing this later,â Batman says, dark promise in his voice. Itâs just how he talks, Dannyâs sure, too used to years of making himself the scariest thing in the dark. That doesnât change the fact that Batman can be terrifying, and Danny canât imagine heâll take kindly to the fact that Danny knows Dukeâs identity.
Fear slithers up his spine, and he canât stop the transformation this time. The rings of white light flash over his body in a second, leaving Phantom in his place.Â
Danny lets go of his legs first, glad to be free from their aching weight, and without a body made of flesh and bone, the hurt begins to fade away until itâs just an unpleasant memory.Â
âWhatââ Duke starts to say just as Batman says, âSignalââ
They must have some sort of silent exchange. Thereâs only a heavy tension in the car and the barely audible rumble of the engine as they drive towards their destination, whatever it may be. Danny sinks into Duke some more, sighing in relief as a hand comes up to card through his wispy white hair.Â
âDanny,â Duke says, âWhatâs this?â
âItâs why they hurt me,â he mumbles against Dukeâs chest. âItâs why they keep hunting me down. I want them to leave me alone. Iâm tired.â
Embarrassingly, his voice cracks on the last word and more tears fall down his cheeks. He hears Duke move, and then hands, bare and gloveless, wipe his tears away with a gentleness that makes his heart ache.
âThey wonât be able to hurt you again. Youâll be safe from now on, Danny, I swear it.â
âSâokay if I get hurt,â he says, âIt always happens. Promise to save me if this happens again?â
âIâll do whatever I can to make sure it doesnât happen again. But if it does, then I promise to always save you. I gave you that panic button, didnât I? As long as you keep it, Iâll always find you.â
âYouâre a good person, Duke,â Danny says, voice falling quieter as his exhaustion catches up to him. âIâm glad I met you.â
He thinks he feels a soft touch to the top of his head. A kiss, maybe, though itâs not likely. But he wants comfort, and heâs endured a lot a pain so he allows himself to hope and be delusional. With the warm that spreads through him from Dukeâs soft kiss to his head, Danny gives in to the siren call of slumber.
âGet some sleep, Danny,â Duke says, voice hushed. âIâll stay with you as long as you need.â
I know, he doesnât say, too tired to open his mouth again, Youâre always here. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
He falls asleep easily after that. Thereâs nothing in the world that can hurt him while heâs in Dukeâs arms. Heâs never been safer.

What makes you think that Arthur is a person of color? :0 just curious.
gladly.
so, at first, i thought it was me projecting but i think the first clue i got was eddie. yall might think iâm being dramatic but eddie wasâŚsuspicious from the get-go. in a normal situation like this, thereâs actually 0% chance that it turns out the way it did for arthur.
but thatâs beside the point. eddie knocks on the door and receives an unhurried response. he walks away to do.. whatever it is he was doing. arthur comes to the door, opens it, looks around and picks up some trash, muttering to himself. suddenly eddie has urgent business inside the office with a. flimsy excuse at best. strike one.
we, as the audience, know that arthur is being shifty because heâs just killed a man. eddie has been told, quite convincingly, that arthur was moving⌠boxes or something (im looking at the transcript, arthur just says ânot furnitureâ soâŚ). and that arthur is working with sensitive documents. not sure if you know this but private detectives have to work with proper authorities to be allowed to operate legally. that means they work with the police and the courts. when a PI says a document is sensitive, they mean legally. they mean eyes only. they mean âcome back later or i could lose my fucking license because you got the wrong look at classified documents.â a building manager, especially their building manager, should know that. strike two.
he also asks for arthurâs partner, peter yang (who is, i can only assume, an east asian man). i should hope that i dont have to remind you that this is massachusetts in the 30âs weâre talking about, and what that means logically. but i will. america hated asian people the most they ever did until COVID in the 30s through the 60s. the only people they hated more were black and brown people. no matter how shifty and suspicious arthur was acting, eddie wouldâve been⌠letâs just say âincredibly unlikelyâ to ask for peter instead of the white man. strike three
thereâs some little bits about subvocals and tone that i could say, but itâd be a lot and i donât fully understand it enough to explain well why eddie set off alarms for me. because i dont have to. it takes 5 minutes (from 11:48-16:09 on spotify, so nearly exactly) for eddie to go from inconvenient, to annoying, to suspicious, to violent. and he ends the conversation with a very real threat of violence that essentially boils down to âdonât come back to the building again.â eddie is a maintenance man. he did not have the power to evict anyone. unless, of course, they were a poc. so why was arthur worried about eddie when sneaking back into the building?
but, like i said, i thought i was projecting. projection and being-on-the-lam can easily explain arthurâs hesitance when delivering the baby and asking for a ride. or the gunshop in part 6. but the lighthouse? no, what really solidified it for me was the end of part 8.
hereâs what officer collin knows so far: a visibly disabled man has stumbled, confused and upset, away from a lighthouse and a body that CANNOT have been killed by a human; and it is dark outside. thatâs it. using this knowledge, he then proceeds to beat said man. brutally. repeatedly.
in part 9 they learn he is blind and when that timid little fucker (mitchell) expresses doubt, collin says this
this is something we like to call coerced confession. arthur did not kill that man (the lighthouse keeper). officer collin knows that arthur didnât kill that man. (dont play, he knows.) but because it is convenient to say that he did, theyâll threaten and torture him until he says that he did.
now, friends, iâm not going to lie to your face and say that white folk are safe from the cops, youre not, i know. but what im also not going to do is pretend like there os any world in which this happens and arthur is visibly white. not in the thirties, not in america. despite being forgotten or unmentioned they are in the midst of the great depression, the exact last thing these small-town cops need is the arrest of a blind white man on their hands. regardless, i have never ever heard of a cop speaking this way to a white person unprovoked. i, on the other hand, have been spoken to this way myself.
this is already quite long and it doesnât even cover the sheer magnitude of people who feel comfortable calling arthur (at his grown ass age of visibly-an-adult) âboy.â or the wicked and downright racist way that larson says it, (genuinely. it sounds like heâs a middle school boy who discovered the word âfagg*tâ for the first time the way he says it. i couldnât tell you how many times that word (boy) drove an ice pick through my fucking skull this season.) but i hope you can at least get the picture.
original post is here
#i know that this is only two reasons#but im serious#i was convinced by part 8#every âboyâ and vague microagression since has only been another nail in the coffin for me#if you need more examples#im going to do a re-listen of it all soon and ill keep track like i did johnâs âfuck count#i also had like four people ask me on my original post so ill tag then in the comments ig#malevolent podcast#arthur malevolent#john malevolent#i hate these dumb gays#anelleoriginal#askellie#i never know what to do when i get the same question more than once#like#how do i reblog my post and answer this ask at the same time so everyone who asked can see?#who knows?#not me#poc arthur lester#i guess itâs more useful/accurate to say that everyone *else* is written like arthur is a poc
