Apple has made 15 generations of iPhones, but now you rarely feel that you are getting a justifiable upgrade on the prior one, spending hundreds of dollars.

Google’s new phones might not have a foldable display or a unique design. However, they are newer than a typical phone. Google thought about the new ways of what a smartphone should be capable of doing. These new phones have new cameras, new hardware, and new software and come packed in between bodies made of new materials.

A lot of these new changes might not be different from many other phones in the market. These new flagships from Google are a fresh start to add some dent in the smartphone industry, for which Google has slogged behind for a few generations of smartphones now. Google Pixel 6 Series: Design

Google has tried to change its pace and follow other manufacturers of Android phones from the last few years. A few years back, the design language was textured backs and fun pop-up colors, but now all the flagship phones represent glass and metal slabs sandwiched inside an aluminum frame. This is making phones slippery. If you look closely at the Pixels, you will find that the finish on these phones is not as quiet as what you expect from a top-end flagship from a reputed company like google. The top-of-the-line phones from other companies such as Apple and Samsung have a much better finish than Pixels.

Both phones look similar to other flagships from the front side when compared to other flagships. In my opinion, they resemble Galaxy Note 10 or Note 20 from Samsung. If you look at the camera module, it will remind you of the phone made by TCL last year.

The Pixel 6 comes in 3 different colors, Black, Red, and Green. All these are dual tones. Pixel 6 Pro comes with an old-fashioned variation of Black, White, or Gold. The regular Pixel comes with chunky matte black sides, which looks OK, in my opinion. The Pro version comes with a thinner and polished aluminum side. Pixel 6 Pro doesn’t compare to other devices in its price tier list, but Pixel 6 looks more fun due to its lower price.

When you look at the back of both phones, you will notice that both come with massive camera bumps that go from one side to the other side of the phone. The bump doesn’t blend seamlessly into the phone. It’s BIG, but on the other end, it will make your phone stay on flat surfaces without any wobble like other phones having different types of camera bumps nowadays.

In reality, most people will put a good-looking case on their phone, so I think the camera module will not be relevant in the real practical scenario. These phones come with massive screens and full glass backs, and it makes sense to use a phone cover to protect the phone from getting shattered if you drop it due to its slipperiness. When I was testing, these phones slid off from my table, the chargers, lap, and other common places where you put your phone. One of our sample units slid off a table and broke its Gorilla Glass Victus glass panel covering its screen.

I recommend you stay away from the cases Google makes using recycled plastics as they are not comparable to other third-party cases.

For me, the main problem with Pixel phones is large screens. They are too big for my taste. If you try to use the phones with one hand, you will fail. Even the Pixel 6 comes with a display larger than six inches. They are easy to drop and don’t fit comfortably in the pockets of most of my pants.

I liked when Google offered a smaller version of the phone in the previous generations. This time you only get a BIG or BIGGER phone. You can’t even tell the size difference because it is so negligible that you only see it when comparing side by side. If you are a fan of oversized phones just like an iPhone Pro Max, but if you don’t want a big slab to carry around in your pocket, you are out of luck with this generation of Pixels.

Google Pixel 6 Series: Display

Because of their enormous size, these phones come with massive displays. Pixel 6 comes with a 6.4-inch display with a resolution of 1080p. On the other hand, Pixel 6 Pro comes with a 6.7-inch display with a resolution of 1440p. Both the displays are huge but very spacious and make things easier for multitasking.

Pixel 6 has a flat display, and Pixel 6 Pro comes with a curved display that flows to the side of the phone. I am not a fan of curved displays because of the errant touches, but I didn’t find any unwanted touches in the Pixel 6 Pro’s testing. Both the displays are sharp and vibrant. The Pixel 6 Pro is a bit more colorful and bright in direct sunlight. Old pixel phones had this problem of weird color reproductions and flickering at low brightness levels, but we haven’t found any of these types of glaring problems in the new phones.

If you look closely, you can find some issues in the display, like a slight color shift when you look at the display from different angles. When you use Pixel 6 Pro with a light background, you can notice a light shadow under the curved part of the display. These problems don’t occur in the flagships of other companies like Apple and Samsung.

The cheaper price tag of these phones justifies these slight caveats in the display. These displays look good but are not comparable to other display levels of different companies. Pixel 6 comes with a display having a refresh rate of 90hz. On the other hand, Pixel 6 Pro has a refresh rate of 120hz. Both these displays feel smoother when used and make scrolling through documents, websites, or different apps. Fast refresh rates are becoming one of the most looked at features on the phone nowadays, so it is good to see Google follow the suit of other brands. You can notice a slight difference between 90hz and 120hz, but both screens feel super smooth, which is more prominent if you are coming from a 60hz screen.

Google Pixel 6 Series: Security

Both the phones come with an In-Display Fingerprint Scanner. Now I will be really honest about the scanner here, and IT IS SLOW. When you compare it to other devices in the market that possess In-Display Fingerprint Scanner, you can make the difference that it is much slower than the competition. As this is an In-Display technology, the screen lights up when you unlock the phone, which can be a little annoying if you are using your phone in the dark.

Both the phones don’t have any type of facial recognition, so the In-Display Fingerprint Scanner is the only biometric authentication you can use, and it is not very good. The phones didn’t recognize my fingerprint so often that I had to touch the scanner multiple times in my testing. The location of the Fingerprint Scanner is good and comfortable. It’s present on the bottom quarter half of the screen, which is seen as the best place for a fingerprint scanner.

You can use the PIN and Password method to lock your device, but they are not considered very secure in today’s day and age.

Google Pixel 6 Series: Performance

Ok, now let’s talk about the most important thing in a phone, its performance. The new Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro come with Google’s own manufactured Tensor Chips. Google followed the footsteps of Apple and designed its custom processor for their phones, leaving behind off-the-shelves Mediatek and Qualcomm processors.

The new Tensor processor has different AI-based enhancements which focus on camera processing, speech recognition, and gaming. Google said that the new processor is comparable to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888, and we can see that it’s true in our testing. All apps we tried opened without any hiccups, and you can change between them smoothly. The UI is free of any lag or stutters. We have seen some stutter on the Twitter app, but it can be a Twitter side thing.

The Tensor Chip might not be putting up scores like Apple’s latest custom chips, but it is far better than the older chips residing in previous generations of Pixel phones. It is right up there with the score of other premium Android phones in the market.

Pixel 6 comes with 8GB of RAM, while Pixel 6 Pro is equipped with 12GB RAM. There wasn’t any big difference between the performances of both the phones. Even the heavier streaming apps do not force close aggressively in the background, like in the older Pixel phones.

Google Pixel 6 Series: Battery Life

Both the phones come with comparable battery life, which can last a full day easily. There is not much difference between the battery life of both phones. I have gone to bed with 30 to 45 percent battery left after a full day with heavy camera use, and AlwaysOn Display turned on. Light users can pull out two days’ worth of battery without any effort. The main reason for this excellent battery life is that both phones are big, which helps Google provide bigger batteries, resulting in magnificent battery life.

Both phones support fast wired and wireless charging. As expected, Google does not provide any charge in the box. You can get a $25 30-watt charging brick which Google sells separately.

Google will be releasing a new $79 fast wireless charger in the future, which we will test when available.

The bigger batteries in these phones take time to charge. Google has gone for an aggressive algorithm to charge phones very slowly after it reaches 80%. This algorithm is suitable for preserving the health of the battery for a longer time. The batteries in these phones are pretty big, so you will not likely need to charge them more than once a day.

Google Pixel 6 Series: Camera

Google has finally upgraded the camera system of the latest Pixel series. The new phones are equipped with new lenses and new sensors, making them capable of new possibilities. Google updated the camera system in 2017, and this time it’s gone big. The new primary camera is much larger than the one used in older Pixel phones.

Pixel 6 Pro is the first Google phone to have three different cameras, primary, ultrawide and, telephoto.

The primary camera on both of these phones is the same 50-megapixel sensor. This sensor works behind an optically stabilized f/1.85 lens to produce 12.5-megapixel images, which are hard-coded. It means you can’t capture the full 50-megapixel photos. So the images produced by the 50-megapixel sensor are not that different from Pixel 5’s camera in detail or sharpness. Still, the photos are very much comparable to the best of the Apple cameras.

There is no clear winner between the competitors, which has been proving true for the high-end flagships for a few years now. It all depends on the user’s preference nowadays, as some people will like the Pixel one’s and others will like Apples’.

The Pixel retains its classy look to the photos with high contrast, extreme sharpness, slight overexposure, and cooler white balance. White balance can be easily adjusted through the on-screen sliders in the main camera app, but if you want to tweak the brightness, you will need a bit more post-processing.

Google’s portrait mode is largely unchanged as you can find the aggressive background blur still prominent. This makes the subject look like a cardboard cut-out pasted in front of blurred background.

One of the things Google should improve upon is the time taken for a Night Mode shot.

If you compare it to Apple’s Night Mode, it takes almost double the time to take the shot. This does not mean that the images taken are bad by any means. Google Pixel 6 series takes incredible detail in Night Mode shots. But sometimes, the person taking the photo or the Subject can lose patience to still for the time taken for the picture. This impatience causes photos taken to be blurred.

Often you can’t tell the difference between the photo taken by the latest Pixel and older models because the difference is not that tremendous. It is more prominent in daylight shots. The most significant caveat of the Pixel 6 is its ultrawide camera. It takes softer photos that are not as wide as the other phones, and you can tell a slight color shift in photos taken from the ultrawide compared to the photos taken from the primary camera. The ultrawide camera is also lacking any macro focusing abilities.

The Pixel 6 Pro’s Telephoto camera, on the other hand, is excellent. It can be the main reason to go for the Pixel 6 Pro instead of the Pixel 6. The 4x zoom is noticeably longer than the 3x zoom provided in the Apple iPhone 13. The 4x zoom on the Pixel makes much more sense than the 10x zoom in day-to-day use. The Telephoto camera of Pixel produces sharp photos with a good amount of natural background blur, which is better than software-based portrait modes.

In the video department, it still can’t beat the iPhone. There are artifacts and inconsistent image stabilization in the video recording. Google has not tried to match their video processing to the standard of their still image processing. Apple is still the best in this class. If you remember the highly saturated Samsung processing a few years back, you get the same feeling in Pixle’s videos.

The front camera of both phones differs in their resolution and quality. The Pixel 6 has an 8-megapixel camera, and the Pixel 6 Pro boasts an 11-megapixel camera. The Pixel 6 Pro has noticeable better quality than the Pixel 6, but the cameras are pretty decent in the selfie department.

Google Pixel 6 Series: Miscellaneous

One of the most overlooked features is the Haptic Feedback of the phone. Google has worked on the new Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro’s Haptic motors to make them more responsive yet subtle. This motor might be the best Haptic Feedback I have tried on any other phone. Typing on the keyboard and interacting with the UI of the phones is very enjoyable because of the excellent responsiveness of the Haptic motor.

I was so happy to see that Google removed the under-display haptic speakers from the latest flagships. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro now features proper dual-stereo speakers, which sound loud and clear. You can use these while watching Youtube, streaming music, or making video calls.

Google has advertised 5G connectivity for both Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The details are not that straightforward, but the T-Mobile version of the Pixel 6 supports only sub-6 5G. The Verizon and AT&T versions of Pixel 6 support the mmWave (faster but limited millimeter-wave 5G). There is no confusion for the bigger Pixel 6 Pro, as it supports both types. AT&T models cost a bit extra compared to T-Mobile and Verizon versions.

When I tested the unlocked versions of Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on Google Fi, performance was comparable to the other premium phones. I was getting around 300Mbps to 400Mbps, far more than you can get on an LTE Network in the same areas.

Google’s new Tensor chip helps the phones to perform better and increase the quality of photos and videos compared to their predecessors. The new phones are running the latest Android 12. It is now more customizable and looks fun and colorful. The new Tensor chip also helps in improving the voice-related features. The transcription can be done offline now, and the foreign languages are better translated in messages and media.

The most important question now left is, has Google done it? Can it be a viable choice now for the consumers? The simple answer is yes. The Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are now some of the best android devices available in the market, competing with the high-end flagships of the other brands. Google Pixel 6 is one of the most value for money phones now compared to the other phones available at the same price. It is a lot of phone for a ‘not so hefty price tag.

LG K92 5G Review

Over the past few years, midrange phones have come into their own. Gone are the mediocre build quality and disappointing displays; instead, you can easily find something with a gorgeous screen and top-notch construction for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, the LG K92 5G ($400) is the wrong kind of blast from the past. This 5G smartphone can't match its obvious competitors, the Google Pixel 4a 5G ($499) and TCL 10 5G UW ($400). It's a carrier-locked phone, like the TCL 10 5G, but only works on AT&T's painfully slow low-band 5G network. It also suffers from poky performance, short battery life, and lackluster build quality that make it hard to recommend.

Big Display, Flimsy Build

At 6.6 by 3.0 by 0.3 inches (HWD) and 7.1 ounces, the K92 5G is a big phone that will fight for room in your pocket. The front of the phone is dominated by a 6.7-inch LCD with pronounced bezels all the way around.

Display resolution clocks in at 2,400 by 1,080 with a 393ppi pixel density. The display is bright and crisp; colors skew slightly warm. Viewing angles are decent, but you'll definitely lose some clarity if you're not looking at the display head on. The biggest issue, however, is the very noticeable shadow beneath the camera cutout. Head on, you'll only notice a slight shadow, but if you look at the phone at any other angle, it becomes very pronounced.

The back of the K92 5G is constructed of a glossy purple plastic. It looks sharp at first but picks up fingerprints and scratches very easily. Though other midrange phones like the Pixel 4a use plastic backplates, they still feel substantial. The K92 5G, on the other, hand, feels a little flimsy. If you tap its back, you'll be greeted with a hollow thud.

There's a thick horizontal stripe for the camera module and flash on the back of the phone. Everything, with the exception of the primary lens, sits flush against the phone and looks very sleek.

The speaker grille, USB-C charging port, and headphone jack sit on the bottom of the bottom of the phone. The top is home to a SIM/microSD slot. On the left you'll find the Google Assistant and volume buttons. The buttons are thin and fairly flush with the phone, and if you have small hands they can be difficult to reach.

There's a power button on the right side of the phone that also houses the fingerprint sensor. It's accurate but a little slow. When you tap your finger to unlock, the screen goes dark for about a second, leaving you to wonder whether your fingerprint registered at all.

Though plastic backplates tend to withstand drops and dings better than their glass counterparts, it feels like there's very little additional support behind the K92 5G's backplate. When we've noticed this in the past, most often on entry-level phones, we've found them to be much more prone to cracks.

There's also no IP rating on the phone, meaning any accidental immersion in water is likely going to mean its demise. And then there's the issue of the display. LG doesn't state that the K92 5G uses any sort of strengthened glass for its display, and we reached out to the company and did not receive a reply. After some digging, it appears the display is made of traditional sodium glass, which will not weather drops well at all. If you're planning to make the K92 5G your next daily-use phone, you'll definitely want to pick up a sturdy case.

Half the 5G Goodness

When it comes to connectivity, the K92 5G is a bit of a strange bird. It's a carrier exclusive for AT&T and Cricket Wireless that is optimized for that network, and it is a 5G phone, but it will never work on AT&T's ultra-fast mmWave network because it only has a sub-6GHz modem. That said, AT&T has played down the importance of its mmWave network, to the point of never releasing a map of the areas it covers.

Overall connectivity is poor, but that's due more to AT&T's network and software requirements than to the K92 5G's hardware. We tested the phone on AT&T's 5G network in Memphis and recorded average speeds of 28.4Mbps down and 3.81Mbps up. On a less congested network in Arkansas, average speeds increased to 45.2Mbps down and 4.67Mbps up. I suspect LTE network speeds would be much better, but AT&T disables the option to turn off 5G connectivity on its phones, so there's no way for us to verify it or for a user to take advantage of it.

We found call quality to be adequate during our test calls. Maximum earpiece volume clocks in at 88dB, which is loud enough to use in just about any scenario. We noticed some static at higher volumes during half of our test calls. Noise cancellation, however, worked perfectly on every call.

Audio quality is disappointing. Though the K92 5G boasts stereo speakers, the top and bottom speakers are unbalanced; in our tests, the bottom speaker maxed out at 101dB compared with just 81dB for the top speaker. In general, audio is forward and harsh, creating significant congestion. Fortunately, there's a headphone jack on board for wired audio.

The K92 5G supports dual-band Wi-Fi, as well as Bluetooth 5.1. NFC is also onboard for mobile payments and boarding passes.

Sluggish Performer

With the exception of the recently released OnePlus Nord N10 5G, the LG K92 is the only 5G smartphone in the US that uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 690 processor. It's a step down from the 700-series processors that have become common on midrange 5G phones such as the Google Pixel 4a, the Revvl 5G UW, and the TCL 10 5G UW. There's 6GB of RAM as well as 128GB of storage, of which just 95GB is available when you open the box. You can add storage with a microSD card.

In theory, the K92's Snapdragon 690 chipset should be powerful enough to hold its own for the average user, but we found it limped along in our tests. Apps took a little longer than expected to open, screen transitions lagged, and, on more than one occasion, the phone briefly froze up when we opened apps.

Gaming is a miss as well. We tested the K92 5G with Alto's Odyssey and Asphalt 8: Airborne for nearly two hours and noticed long load times and intermittent skipped frames. The phone froze entirely at one point while playing Asphalt 8, forcing us to reboot it.

Benchmark tests yielded interesting results. On Geekbench 5, a suite of tests that measures raw computing power, the K92 5G earned 602 single-core (SC) and 1,734 multi-core (MC) scores. That's on par with the OnePlus Nord N10 (578 SC/1,846MC) and even the more powerful TCL 10 5G UW (618 SC/1,911MC).

Of course, Geekbench results only tells part of the story. On PCMark 2.0 and Basemark Web, benchmark suites that use real-world applications, the K92 5G lagged behind on tasks like video editing and web browsing. Add in a GFXBench Car Chase Offscreen score of 14fps versus the average score of 21fps we've seen on Snapdragon 765 chipsets, it starts to look like the phone's underwhelming GPU may be at least partially to blame for some of the lag we experienced.

A 4,000mAh battery powers the K92 5G. Despite the phone's energy-efficient processor, its battery is anemic for a phone with a 6.7-inch display. In our battery drain test, which streams HD video over Wi-Fi at full brightness, the K92 5G eked out just 8 hours and 7 minutes before shutting down. What's more, we found that the battery depleted quickly even when it wasn't being used; during our week of testing, the battery drained an average of 17 percent overnight.

If you do find yourself veering into the red by the end of the day, the K92 5G supports fast charging with Quick Charge 4.0. That means you can easily gain a few hours of battery life in about five minutes, or add 80% charge to your depleted battery in about an hour. Wireless charging, however, is not an option.

Cameras That (Mostly) Shine in Good Light

On the back of the K92 5G, you'll find a quad camera stack with a 64MP primary lens with an f/1.8 aperture, a 5MP ultra-wide sense with an f/2.2 aperture, and 2MP depth and macro sensors. A 16MP selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture sits on the front of the phone.

Let's start with the 64MP primary lens. In good light, it does a surprisingly solid job. Our test shots were crisp with excellent background detail and depth of field. In low light, there was some loss of fine detail, and we noticed overly aggressive noise cancellation in a few test shots, but overall, the K92 5G does well for a midrange phone.

The 5MP ultra-wide lens did a pretty decent job in good light. There was no complex distortion like we often see on midrange wide-angle lenses. However, there was a noticeable loss of fine detail in most of our shots. Low-light photos, on the other hand, featured noticeable edge noise. There were some unexplained halos in a few shots that may have been caused by natural phenomena.

The K92 5G's macro lens, like most we've tested, fails to stand out. Nearly all our test shots appeared flat and had significant detail loss in the foreground.

The 16MP front-facing camera does an excellent job in good light. All of our test photos were crisp with excellent depth of field. In low light, however, the selfie cam struggles. Our test shots looked flat and noise started to creep in around the edges.

LG offers several different Portrait mode options on the K92 5G. Thanks to the 5MP depth sensor, all work well on the rear camera. For our test shots, we used the Blur setting. All of our test shots had a natural-looking bokeh with accurate subject mapping.

Portraits with the selfie cam are a bit more hit or miss. We found issues with subject mapping around shoulders and hats in nearly every shot. In photos where the subject and background were the same color, we noticed areas where the bokeh effect simply didn't work.

Android 10 With Dozens of Unwelcome Extras

The K92 5G ships features Android 10 with LG's custom UI. Over the past few years, LG's skin has become more user-friendly, but it's still a pretty heavy-handed take on Android. Icons have a unique look, the Settings menu is organized a little differently, and even the Search bar is not the same as you'll find on stock Android. It's not a bad thing, necessarily, but if you're not used to LG devices, it takes a while to get your bearings.

Unfortunately, the K92 is filled with nearly two dozen bloatware applications, including shopping apps, games, and AT&T and LG's branded apps. It's excessive and completely inexcusable for an unsubsidized phone to ship with nearly 15GB of apps you didn't request.

It's not clear whether the K92 5G will get an upgrade to Android 11. If it does, expect to see it in the distant future, since it will need to be pushed through the carrier. We've reached out to LG inquire about future software upgrades but have yet to hear back.

Simply Not a Contender

The LG K92 5G sounds like a solid smartphone on paper, but we found it to be a weak competitor when compared to the Google Pixel 4a and TCL 10 5G UW. Given the quality concerns, poor battery life, and underwhelming performance—not to mention its mediocre display—it's hard for us to find any outstanding features that makes the K92 5G worth consideration. AT&T customers looking for a 5G phone will find the Pixel 4a 5G a far superior option.

The XBR-X900H is the best-performing midpriced Sony TV I’ve tested in years, with excellent contrast and brightness, accurate color and plenty of punch with HDR. Add to that a solid smart TV system, sleek styling and cutting-edge features and you’ve got a great television for anyone who values Sony’s brand but doesn’t want to pony up for one of its OLED TVs.

The key to this TV’s image quality, as with all LCD-based sets that perform well in my side-by-side tests, is well implemented full-array local dimming. It improves black levels and contrast by illuminating different areas of the screen separately as needed. In some crucial ways, such as reducing stray illumination with HDR, the X900H beat the similarly equipped TCL 6-Series in those tests, but in other ways the TCL won out, with superior brightness and contrast overall. The Sony also costs more than the TCL, so it’s not my top recommendation for people who want the best image quality for the money. 

There are lots of good reasons to choose the Sony X900H instead, however. The first is superior connectivity: Unlike the TCL, it will be compatible with the highest-quality 4K/120Hz video from the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, and unlike any TV at this price it also has a built-in Next Gen TV tuner for upcoming ATSC 3.0 broadcasts. The Sony is also available in a massive 85-inch size, something not offered by TCL or Hisense. And maybe Sony’s brand cachet is important to you — but you don’t want to throw down even more for a FALD-equipped Samsung, the cheapest of which (the Q80T) costs hundreds more than the X900H. 

Even better, Sony recently dropped the price of the 65-inch size to $1,000, just $100 more than the TCL. If that size, or any of the other reasons above appeal to you, the X900H should be on your short list.

A couple of subtle touches separate the X900H from other big-screen, thin-frame TVs available today. There’s a line of silver metallic finishing around the extreme edge on all four sides, matching the silver-colored stand legs. Those legs are thinner than usual but feel plenty solid, and I appreciated that they’re metal and not plastic.

A look around the sides finds holes for Sony’s unusual speaker array, and the bottom has bass ports. Both are invisible from the standard seating position but contribute to improved sound, according to Sony. I don’t test audio quality for CNET TV reviews, but don’t expect miracles here — any decent soundbar will likely outperform the X900H’s built-in audio by a mile.

The remote is old-school Sony: way too many buttons, most of which you’ll never use. I prefer the sleeker, simpler clickers of Samsung and Roku, as well as the motion-infused wands of LG.

Android TV: No Google TV yet, but still solid

Google recently debuted a new smart TV system called Google TV, but currently it’s only available in the new Chromecast and Google hasn’t said when (or if) other Google-powered devices like the X900H will get the upgrade. Meanwhile the current version, called Android TV, still performs well. Apps launched quickly, I zipped around thumbnails and navigation screens with ease, and response times in general were on par with Roku, Samsung and LG TVs.

Only Roku has as many apps as Android TV, and it lacks the voice power of Google Assistant. Roku’s search is better, however. LG has Assistant, as well as Alexa, but its app selection falls short. The X900H’s array of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos apps is solid too: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, Vudu and Fandango Now support both, Google Play Movies supports Vision (but not Atmos) and Tidal supports Atmos.

Android TV’s menus are perfectly usable, if not quite as evolved as Google TV. The home page is clean and simple, with favorite apps grouped at the top for easy access in a customizable bar and clear routes to get more apps, search and more. New for 2020, you can customize the input menu, and the TV settings menus have clear explanations of the effects of different adjustments, complete with illustrations.

I did experience some problems. There’s quite a few annoying pop-ups and notifications on the home page. You can’t customize the top section or what appears in each row, so a screen mostly full of clutter you don’t care about is inevitable. Wi-Fi was also unstable on my review sample. A couple of times I was greeted with a pop-up alert saying Wi-Fi was disconnected. The only way I could turn it back on was to unplug the TV and plug it back in. I asked Sony about the issue and a spokesperson told me it plans to issue a software update to deal with the issue — no word yet on timing.

Assistant on TVs works well. Commands are transcribed on-screen, along with suggestions for follow-up commands. The X900H lacks the far-field mic found on last year’s version, which is a bummer, but talking into the remote worked fine. I was able to launch apps, perform searches, mute and change volume, tell it to “play cat videos on YouTube,” get the weather, set timers and so on. 

It wasn’t without typical Google Assistant wonkiness however. Once I asked, “What’s the latest news?” and an account login page appeared, and when I clicked through a YouTube channel failed to load, complete with a “Something went wrong” popup, a blank screen and a spinning progress indicator.

You can link the Sony TV with Google Nest Home or Amazon Alexa speakers for hands-free action. The X900H lets you use your phone to cast apps via its built-in Google Cast functionality, which works just like a Chromecast, and also supports Apple’s AirPlay 2 and HomeKit compatibility. AirPlay 2 lets the TV function as a display for TV shows, movies, music, photos and web pages with an iPhone, iPad or Mac as the controller. Unlike many other TVs, however, this Sony lacks the full Apple TV app.

The best picture-enhancing extra on the X900H is full-array local dimming. Unlike Vizio, Hisense or TCL, Sony doesn’t disclose the number of dimming zones on its TVs, and while more zones generally equate to better performance, that’s not always the case.

Other picture-centric extras include a native 120Hz refresh rate, a notable improvement on paper over the fake 120Hz refresh rates (they’re actually 60Hz native) found on some TVs. The X-Motion Clarity mode that debuted in 2018 is also on board. It boosts motion resolution by applying black frame insertion only where it’s needed on the screen, which is said to eliminate the flicker and dimness evinced by similar modes in past sets. Unlike Samsung, TCL and Vizio, Sony doesn’t use quantum dots, so its HDR color gamut isn’t as wide. In addition to standard HDR10, the X900H supports the Dolby Vision HDR format, unlike Samsung.

The X900H has some of the most capable inputs of any 4K TV. It supports numerous HDMI 2.1 features, namely enhanced audio return channel (aka eARC), automatic low latency mode (ALLM, or auto game mode) and variable refresh rate. A firmware update will allow its HDMI inputs to accept 4K resolution at 120 frames per second, but Sony couldn’t tell me exactly when it would arrive. That feature sets it apart from many 2020 TVs like the TCL 6-Series, especially for gamers who want to take advantage of high frame rates from an Xbox Series X or Sony PlayStation 5.

It’s also the only non-8K TV to feature a built-in ATSC 3.0 over-the-air tuner, which allows the X900H to receive NextGen TV broadcasts. Those are still only available in a tiny number of markets so I didn’t get the chance to check out this feature, but it’s nice to know that once the broadcasts become more widespread, Sony X900H owners won’t have to connect an external tuner box to watch.

Unlike many of Samsung’s sets, the Sony actually has an analog video input, albeit composite-only, and I also appreciate having a headphone jack.

Picture quality comparisons

The Sony X900H is an excellent performer overall, with a pleasing, balanced image that still manages to deliver plenty of pop and contrast. It can’t quite match the black levels and light output of some LCDs I’ve tested — most recently from TCL and Hisense — but still comes pretty close. Meanwhile other areas of image quality, namely color accuracy and shadow detail, were superior to those TVs.

Dim lighting: Dark movie scenes played in a dark room are the most challenging kind of content for LCD-based TVs and while the Sony looked excellent in my side-by-side tests, it wasn’t quite as good as the TCL 6-Series or the Hisense at maintaining that crucial darkness. Letterbox bars in mid-dark scenes, such as the general’s speech in the bunker at the beginning of 1917, provided one example. The other two TVs were both able to preserve a blacker color of “black” in the bars and other dark areas, like the soldiers’ silhouettes, which made them look a bit more realistic than the X900H. The difference was minor overall, however, and even less noticeable in other scenes with brighter lighting.

On the other hand, the Sony preserved details in shadows most consistently among the three TVs, for example in the super dark scene with the soldier waking up (1:06:38), and also controlled blooming and stray illumination very well. Again, the differences with SDR were relatively minor and all three TVs looked excellent.

Bright lighting: The X900H can get exceedingly bright, although it didn’t measure quite as bright as some other sets I’ve tested recently.

The “accurate” numbers above were measured with the Sony’s Xtended Dynamic Range setting in the High setting in the Custom picture mode, which is a great choice for bright rooms where you still want an accurate image. As usual, the brightest setting, Vivid, is incredibly inaccurate. 

Compared to the others, the Sony’s screen finish was visibly superior at preserving contrast and black levels in a bright room, but it did a somewhat worse job of dimming bright reflections. Overall I preferred the Sony’s bright-room image to that of the others in most scenes.

Color accuracy: Despite its lack of quantum dots I’ve come to expect excellent color from Sony and the X900H is no exception. Its Custom and Cinema modes were very similar prior to calibration although both skewed slightly blue; afterward they were nearly perfect. Watching program material bright scenes, like the fields, woods and uniforms in Chapter 8 of 1917, looked the most pleasing and natural of the three TVs, outdoing the apparent saturation of the TCL in my comparison.

Video processing: The X900H had no issues delivering proper 1080p/24 cadence with its Motionflow controls in the Off position, which is probably the best for film purists. Meanwhile the Auto setting introduced the buttery smoothness of the soap opera effect. Then there’s the Custom setting, which has adjustable Smoothness and Clearness.

A Smoothness setting above 1 introduces significant SOE, while 0 turns it off. I actually didn’t mind the slight smoothing that the 1 setting introduces (some purists might), but its effect on motion resolution was really slight, so I’d probably stick with 0. The Clearness setting ramps up black frame insertion to improve motion resolution, but it doesn’t have any effect (aside from dimming the image) unless you’ve got Smoothness at 2 or higher. In other words there’s no way to get the best of both worlds — high motion resolution and no SOE — with one setting.

The X900H measured the best (lowest) input lag of any Sony TV yet, at around 15 milliseconds in Game mode for both 1080p and 4K HDR — an improvement of 4ms compared to last year’s X950G. In the Custom mode, meanwhile, I measured 91ms with both resolutions.

Uniformity: The X900H sample I tested was very good in this category, with few visible variations across the screen in static or moving test patterns or program material, such as a hockey match. Compared to the TCL and the Hisense, the Sony lost black level fidelity and contrast from off-angle more severely as I moved away from the sweet spot in the center of the screen. On the other hand, it preserved color better than the other two.

HDR and 4K video: The X900H is a suburb HDR performer overall. I started my comparison with my reference video, the montage from the Spears and Munsil UHD HDR Benchmark, and the Sony held its own nicely compared to the TCL and the Hisense, although it couldn’t quite match either one for contrast. Its biggest challenge, as expected, came during the difficult bright-on-black sections, for example the honey dripper at 2:50. Both of the others delivered deeper black levels that gave the image more pop and contrast, as well as showing less blooming and stray illumination.

In brighter, more natural shots like the snowy mountains and the hot springs, the Sony narrowed the gap, although brightness in highlights and in larger bright areas like clouds and snow lagged the TCL slightly and the Hisense even more. Color accuracy was excellent, a bit better than the TCL and significantly better than the Hisense, with a balanced yet vibrant look to the flowers and insects. The Sony also preserved detail in very bright areas better than the Hisense. 

Turning back to 1917 in 4K HDR, the Sony again competed well and in some scenes looked the most balanced and pleasing of the three. The general’s bunker scene (6:55) was one example: the TCL 635 showed darker black levels but worse blooming and stray illumination, and while the Hisense was brighter in highlights its color looked the least realistic and it also showed blooming. Again the Sony preserved shadow detail the best among the three as well.

In brighter scenes the Sony again trailed the other two at delivering that trademark HDR blast of light, for example in the skies above the soldiers as they walk quickly through the trenches. The TCL and the Sony were relatively close, however, and tough to differentiate without measuring their bright areas directly, while the Hisense was visibly brighter than both. On the other hand, as I saw with the 4K Benchmark, colors on both the TCL and Sony looked more accurate and natural than on the Hisense.

4K HDR gaming: For this test I played The Last of Us Part 2 on a PS4 Pro in the TVs’ various Game modes: Game mode on the Sony and Gaming HDR (aka THX-certified Game Mode) for the 635 (I didn’t include the Hisense in this test).

When you’re crawling around a dark building hunting zombies, shadow detail is more important than black level and contrast, because it allows you to peer into dark recesses to spot enemies. By that measure the Sony was better than the 635, delivering every ounce of detail in the darkest shadows while the 635 was a bit more shrouded. That said, the TCL won for black levels, contrast and punch in the same (default) game settings. With many games, including The Last of Us Part 2, you can adjust gamma and shadow detail to taste (and you should).

Moving out into the day-lit Seattle streets, the 635 again looked best overall thanks to superior contrast, which as usual helped colors pop. The Sony still looked great, however, and differences would be tough to discern outside of a side-by-side comparison.

BlackBerry’s brand switches hands again, set to return as a 5G Android handset

A good brand is hard to kill. Over the past several years, the smartphone space has seen a resurgence of once-mighty mobile brands making a comeback with various degrees of success. HMD’s Nokia phones are probably the best and most successful example, but even Palm had a brief moment in the sun.

And then there’s the case of BlackBerry. TCL surprised the mobile world by bringing the brand raring back with an Android handset that re-embraced the QWERTY keyboard. That, in and of itself, wasn’t enough, of course. But TCL has the chops to deliver quality hardware, and certainly did so with the KeyOne. I know I was surprised the first time I saw one in person behind the scenes at CES a few years back.

Early this year, TCL announced the end of the partnership, noting, “We�� regret to share… that as of August 31, 2020, TCL Communication will no longer be selling BlackBerry-branded mobile devices.” From its phrasing, it seemed like a less than amicable end for the deal. But TCL has already moved on to producing devices under its own brand name after years of subsidiaries and branded deals.

All of which brings us to this week’s announcement that a company you’ve never heard of, called OnwardMobility, is bringing the BlackBerry name to hardware for North America and Europe (other branding deals have existed in other markets). It’s a strange deal for starters, due to the fact that OnwardMobility is hardly a household name. It’s based in Austin, Texas, has fewer than 50 employees and was founded in March of last year, perhaps with such a partnership in mind.

After all, while a branding deal is far from a guaranteed recipe for success, it is, at least, a way of getting that first foot through the door. I’m not really sure I would be writing anything about OnwardMobility for TechCrunch dot com at the moment, were it not for the promise of reviving the BlackBerry name yet again. So that’s something. The company’s staff also notably involves some former TCL folk, as well as people involved with the BlackBerry software side of things. Another name that pops up a lot is Sonim Technologies, another Austin-based company that is a subsidiary of a Shenzhen-based brand of the same name. They largely specialize in rugged devices for first responders.

CEO Peter Franklin has both Microsoft and Zynga on his resume, and produced this fairly low-fi YouTube video to explain the company’s mission:

OnwardMobility says it’s a standalone startup. No word yet on investments or investors, though it will certainly be interesting to find out who’s backing this latest push to make the BlackBerry name relevant again. Notably, the company’s not sharing renders yet, either, but says it’s bringing a 5G device to market in 2021, with a physical keyboard and the focus on security that’s long been a key differentiator for the BlackBerry brand.

BlackBerry (the software company) certainly seems to be on board with its new partner here. CEO John Chen had this to say about the deal:

BlackBerry is thrilled OnwardMobility will deliver a BlackBerry 5G smartphone device with physical keyboard leveraging our high standards of trust and security synonymous with our brand. We are excited that customers will experience the enterprise and government level security and mobile productivity the new BlackBerry 5G smartphone will offer.

More or less what you’d anticipate on that front. For now, the news is basically OnwardMobility’s entry onto the scene and announcement of its BlackBerry licensing deal. I’m honestly not sure how much clout the BlackBerry name holds in 2020 — nor do I necessarily believe there’s a critical mass of consumers clamoring to return to the physical keyboard. So OnwardMobility has a lot to prove in an extremely crowded mobile market. I guess we’ll see what it has to offer next year. Stay tuned.

TCL 10 Pro review

Premium looks

The TCL 10 Pro is slim, modern and attractive, and could even compete with higher-end devices. Indeed, it combines a glass screen and back with an aluminium frame, where plastic is the norm for similarly priced devices.

This premium feel is accentuated by its green gradient back, which evokes memories of adventurous colourways Huawei’s P30 series came in.
